- 0:00What's happening over here says in the last chapter in chapter
- 0:0319, besides shame is telling us about this concept of Hasidut.
- 0:07Hasidut essence means that you're taking something, you do
- 0:11it all the way, whether it be Abad Hashem, abadisa, loving
- 0:15another Jew, shamayim, any area, you're a hasee, which means
- 0:21you're taking it very far. But then he goes on to this
- 0:24chapter, chapter 20, implementing, actually applying
- 0:28this idea of Hasidut. And it comes to a topic that to
- 0:31me is one of the most fundamental topics you can have
- 0:35and hardest to come by. And that is a topic of how do
- 0:40you apply a constitute balance. So what's balance?
- 0:45First, it talks about decision making a three from 4:15 and
- 0:49we'll go through it. How do you decide when to apply
- 0:56this? To give you multiple examples, a
- 0:59person that's very strong about this.
- 1:01I love another Jew, so I want to do whatever I can for another
- 1:04Jew. There's got to be limits.
- 1:07Has to be sometime I say I got to stop and do things for my own
- 1:09family, stop and take care of myself or I want to go very far
- 1:13for Kitty Shasham. It has to be some degree of
- 1:16limits. When do you and how do you
- 1:18decide that balance is a very delicate and powerful tool for
- 1:24when Yan E Kari nod nod. It's a fundamental point.
- 1:28Vetteda MH zela malaka kasha chebek hasidut.
- 1:33It's the most difficult task about being a dedicated person
- 1:38is to know the balance. More difficult than being
- 1:41inspired to be, you know, a very dedicated area of Abadi's self,
- 1:45for example. More difficult than that is to
- 1:48know when to apply and when not to apply.
- 1:50Kidakuto Rav. It's delicate level is exact.
- 1:56The issue is about the wiser. Can he sound good line here so I
- 1:59can trick you like crazy. I can't even say it's a kinda
- 2:02talk to Ma and that's a person who's in danger.
- 2:05There are many good things out there.
- 2:09You have a yes that I can tell you don't do that.
- 2:14It's a bad thing. There are many bad things and
- 2:19there are many bad things with the It's that I can tell you
- 2:23that's the right thing to do. The Karev, kill him.
- 2:25Mitzvot get a lot, hear his words.
- 2:28There are many bad things out there with the itzer.
- 2:30I can tell you, you must do that.
- 2:32It's a great mitzvah. And the truth is no person can
- 2:40succeed in this balance. He has to apply each and every
- 2:44time he's debating something. Thank you.
- 2:46He has to apply three steps, which we'll see what they are in
- 2:50a minute. But again, let's understand this
- 2:52point. He's telling you a clue.
- 2:55You can have many, many instances in life.
- 2:57I'll give you a classic one. How many times does a person
- 3:00debate if they should go learn? This morning people debated they
- 3:04should go to Mignon. All right, so I'm not saying
- 3:08every person had to go, but I am saying that the Itza Hara could
- 3:12have told you it's the wrong thing to go.
- 3:16Dangerous. It's not proper.
- 3:18Your wife's going to be nervous. Your family's not going to be.
- 3:20You don't have to be home for the family.
- 3:22You have to be safe. Whatever may be the answer.
- 3:24Doctor told you something's down, all right?
- 3:27And he's telling you that you decided the right thing or wrong
- 3:30thing, but he's telling you that right there is a balance that a
- 3:34person has to know what's the right thing.
- 3:36I gave you my example the whole last week, which is my question
- 3:39was whether or not to go to Israel.
- 3:40I wasn't sure. Do go, don't go.
- 3:43He debated it back and forth. Should I leave my Khalil?
- 3:47Should I leave Khalil? Should I get up and go?
- 3:50Don't leave. Go up and go.
- 3:52This is a balance and it's very hard to decide the right from
- 3:56wrong in these areas. We're not talking about things
- 3:58that seem clear. We're talking about all the
- 4:00areas where real people struggle.
- 4:03Real people don't struggle. You can right or wrong.
- 4:08Because I say. You.
- 4:10You. You're.
- 4:10Deciding right and if you made that decision to to go and does
- 4:15that mean does that mean an it could be an instance where the
- 4:17inside I pulled you in that direction?
- 4:18Yes, yes, it could very well be. And the person has to apply when
- 4:22they're struggling in this challenge.
- 4:23He has to apply the three steps that I'll give you to decide how
- 4:27to make the right move. And we have faced this so many
- 4:29times in our life. You want us?
- 4:31Should you work more in the office?
- 4:33Or maybe I'm overdoing it? That's a very good question.
- 4:36Is that the answer? I the answer at all?
- 4:38You want us. Should you get involved in
- 4:39another offensive case? Or maybe it's not good for me.
- 4:43Should you give more charity? Maybe it's not good for me.
- 4:46Should you go to shul? Maybe not proper.
- 4:48Should you go to learn, even have the right thing with us?
- 4:51Maybe. Should you get upset, your
- 4:53children maybe have the right thing.
- 4:55There's so many different balances that good people
- 4:57struggle with, and these are the balances of the Mischala has a
- 5:02duty calls it weighing the balance of being a Hasidic.
- 5:06Your dedication is to be a good person, but you don't know where
- 5:10it's coming from. Is it coming from the Yitzhak to
- 5:13which would make sense, my inclination to do good?
- 5:16Or is it coming from the Yitzhak at all?
- 5:19My inclination to do bad. What are you talking about?
- 5:20I'm doing a good thing. No, no, no, you don't realize
- 5:24where its source is from. And I'm saying this and he says
- 5:27it's the the most difficult task in the world of Hasidut.
- 5:32And I'll tell you from learning further and from you've seen
- 5:35this in your own life, in our own experiences.
- 5:37This is where good people struggle.
- 5:40We don't struggle between the itzhak, the Itzhak Tov.
- 5:42Simply we know to avoid evil and we know to be dedicated to good.
- 5:48But our challenge is knowing which is good and which is evil.
- 5:51What do you mean? Of course I know.
- 5:53No. It turns out that if it was
- 5:55simple life, then it would be too easy.
- 5:58Hashem throws into our midst. He throws to us this challenge.
- 6:02And every one of us has faced this challenge, has slipped and
- 6:06fallen this challenge, right? Every one of us, one way or
- 6:09another. And this is called the Meshkala
- 6:10constitute. How do you know where something
- 6:14is coming near Zahra or it's coming from here?
- 6:17So. And it seems so simple and turns
- 6:20out to be so complicated. Let's see these words together.
- 6:28The main challenge in life, good and bad, is.
- 6:31Yeah, Israel is a good example because yeah, you're not doing
- 6:34so-called anything bad, you're going away and you but you think
- 6:37by leaving your alcohol you'd be.
- 6:39Doing something I had so many struggles during that week
- 6:41before you all witnessed it. That's whether or not to go and
- 6:45the break, right. Well, I'll give you the this the
- 6:47scale very simple. Do you go?
- 6:50So I was going to go to two bar mitzvahs.
- 6:52I said two plants that street. Do you leave your kahal?
- 6:56But it's a light week. It's on the weekdays.
- 6:59Do you leave your Khalil stopping to learn you leave your
- 7:01family? Come on, right.
- 7:04On the other hand, these two omits I was supposed to go to
- 7:08right. I could use a vacation once in a
- 7:10while, right, Even though it wasn't like, you know, that type
- 7:12of vacation. Maybe it refreshes you.
- 7:14So I was back and forth and to get it and we debated it and I
- 7:19and eventually we applied these three tasks.
- 7:21And I think after the fact that Shem proved I don't care.
- 7:24Shem was the right decision, but I could easily live in the wrong
- 7:26one, right? So you could see.
- 7:29And you're saying, what do you mean it's a great thing, No
- 7:32stopping. You're learning, you're leaving
- 7:34your family and you're leaving your shoe.
- 7:36What do you mean it's the right decision?
- 7:38But this is Mishka. I say, dude, this is something
- 7:40that a person has to weigh and it's so difficult.
- 7:43I'll give you a better example. This is.
- 7:44Conversely, like. Conversely, if you stayed.
- 7:47Yeah. Would that be where you said
- 7:49that you did you? You went against the.
- 7:51I don't think if I had a state it would have been the wrong
- 7:53thing. It.
- 7:53Would have been the right thing no matter what I'm trying to
- 7:55say. Could it have been the right
- 7:56thing? No matter.
- 7:57What culture state? No, sorry, I I'm hopefully.
- 7:59Because you're being pulled to to go.
- 8:01Should I go? So staying would have said,
- 8:03yeah, obviously I have the reasons to stay you.
- 8:06See what I'm trying to say? You have to 1st apply the steps
- 8:08of of a decision making. Before you get to.
- 8:10You have to apply number one. You have to decide what's for
- 8:13Hashem and #2 you have to decide.
- 8:16The second thing is to try to, this is the most important one,
- 8:20so I couldn't really define what's for Hashem.
- 8:22A lot of times we try to convince ourselves for Hashem
- 8:26and really it's for us, right? That's a hard one to use.
- 8:29The second tool is the most important, which is weighing the
- 8:32odds, weighing the two sides. That's the second one.
- 8:35That's the one that you really applied.
- 8:37And I weighed it back and forth and back and forth and
- 8:39eventually just took the plunge. And then you rely on the third
- 8:43step, which we'll see, which is hoping that Hashem will make it
- 8:46work. So first you try to decide
- 8:49what's fashem. Very hard to know what's fashem.
- 8:52I'll give you another example. You have a hesit case, someone
- 8:56calls you up and say you know your brother-in-law, he needs
- 9:00your help, got to get involved. Anything itself, I got to get
- 9:04involved. It's my brother-in-law, how can
- 9:05I leave it? All right, my nephew, he needs
- 9:08my help. I got to get involved.
- 9:10I'm going to call him, I'm going to talk to him.
- 9:11I spend time, I'm going to go visit him.
- 9:13I'm going to get involved. Great.
- 9:15On the other hand, it's a sticky situation. 01, number one.
- 9:21Number two, it's family. You're taking away from your own
- 9:24family. When you get involved over
- 9:25there, you don't know if it's going to lead to anything.
- 9:27You don't know what's pulling you.
- 9:29That couldn't be. You think in your mind, what's
- 9:32pulling me is I want to do the right thing.
- 9:34Or it could be there's always a certain degree of enjoyment.
- 9:37I want to be a hero. I want to be a hero when I have
- 9:40a family case and I know that no other sibling is getting
- 9:43involved. I'm the only one who knows the
- 9:45tools how to figure this out or his own.
- 9:48The kids own siblings and I can I'm the one that's going to
- 9:50figure I'm going to be the the Superman, right?
- 9:53Or. You could be neglecting what
- 9:55you're really supposed to be taking as well.
- 9:56How do you know? This is very hard?
- 9:58So you have to weigh, as we'll see, weigh what's the outcome,
- 10:03weigh what's the right thing. And you have to see will it
- 10:06succeed? Will it succeed?
- 10:08Will it harm your family has Shalom, will it not right.
- 10:11You have to go back and forth and back and forth.
- 10:14And the truth is, even with trying to apply a motive for
- 10:20Hashem, you don't know which transfer Hashem or not.
- 10:23That's very real. Nobody knows if they're like
- 10:25smart fully Part 1 trying to figure out the right decision.
- 10:29Also, you don't know if you have a good or bad.
- 10:31The truth is you know what ends up really working experience.
- 10:35What ends up working is experience.
- 10:37For example, for me, my big tool was the fact trying to figure
- 10:42out if good for my wife or not. That was a big item, right?
- 10:46And back and forth, back and forth and eventually I, I, you
- 10:49know, we discussed and debated and debated.
- 10:52I took the plunge. I didn't know if the show was a
- 10:54right decision at all. I think the plunge, a big
- 10:56component at this high point is the idea of the going to Villa.
- 11:00Going to Villa says very interesting thing.
- 11:03He says if a poor man comes, I've mentioned this before, a
- 11:07poor man comes and you reach into your pocket and outcomes
- 11:12money very fast. Think twice.
- 11:16If it's going too easy, your decision is too clear.
- 11:20It's very possible. It's kind of from the inside
- 11:22out. If you have a struggle, actually
- 11:26it's more likely it's kind of from the inside of you.
- 11:28Hear that you stick your hand into your pocket, 100 bucks
- 11:31comes out, $100 comes out. Don't be the inside out sounds
- 11:35backward. No, no.
- 11:36If it goes too easy in the initial stages, it's the inside
- 11:41out pulling you. So for me, if the decision was
- 11:44so simple, it might have been the wrong one.
- 11:46The fact that I had a struggle and the fact that I had to
- 11:49convince my wife and the fact that I had to set it up and all
- 11:52these different things made me feel a little better about the
- 11:54decision eventually. Because the more difficult the
- 11:57decision is, the better the outcome.
- 12:00It's very possibly the more you are actually doing the right
- 12:05thing. It's a shocking idea.
- 12:06It's against logic, but not really because you have to
- 12:09figure out what's pulling you is the natural pull.
- 12:14So if it goes naturally that direction, it's the ETA.
- 12:18But the ETA Atov is the fighter. So if it's a fight, it's very
- 12:22possible the ETA Atov. This is how it works.
- 12:24And it seems against all logic, but you've seen it in your own
- 12:28life. I can't, I don't tell you.
- 12:30You've seen in your life if you were very quick to something
- 12:33turns out maybe not the right thing.
- 12:35If you debated and debated and debated and then making a
- 12:39decision, very possibly that was the right thing, you know,
- 12:42inside which school to send you chosen.
- 12:44If it was like this, not sure if it worked out the rest.
- 12:48But if it was back and forth and back and forth and you had
- 12:51sleepless nights and you made a move which said to yourself,
- 12:55there are certain, you know that there's certain.
- 12:59You know, what's the word backlash I'm going to have from
- 13:02this? Or maybe I'm not sure if it's
- 13:04right exact or percussion, I'm not sure it's right.
- 13:06That usually is the one that's right.
- 13:08It's a very funny mindset to go down, but that's the truth.
- 13:13How do you know? How do you know?
- 13:14You eventually have to rely on that shit like you need
- 13:16experience, either your own experience or the people that
- 13:19came before you, their experience.
- 13:21But overall, the theme is he got away and he had to go back and
- 13:25forth and don't just rely on the fact that I want to do good.
- 13:29I've said this many times, I'll say it again, one of my favorite
- 13:33opinions. There's been so many issues from
- 13:38people who meant to do good. Many do gooders out there have
- 13:43caused a lot of harm and many real people know this to be the
- 13:47case all right if they. Many do gooders who open up
- 13:50unnecessary institutions. Many do gooders have made wrong
- 13:53decisions with their family. Many do gooders have got
- 13:56involved in fights and pushed a fight a little further.
- 13:59All this is coming from the Etsera and a person needs to
- 14:02know this and apply their experience to decide what is
- 14:06good and what is bad. It's called let's review those
- 14:10three steps you're going to review, but OK, so the first
- 14:13point ultimately we. Don't know once you could think
- 14:23of going to Israel, going to the oh, that's of course, it's the
- 14:26given. How could it be wrong?
- 14:28How could it be wrong? So it's OK, so fine the second
- 14:31one. Right, that's a challenge.
- 14:33Fine, Power, fine. Yeah, so.
- 14:35So instead that's that. But really the point is
- 14:38approaching the second point. We don't know what the we don't
- 14:41know what our outcome is going to be.
- 14:43So, so that's all on the outside, but on the inside,
- 14:46like, OK, so so we don't know that that really on the inside
- 14:50we want to be the hero. But but what if, what if we can
- 14:54identify that, oh, we really are trying to be the hero here, but
- 14:59I still want to do it. But I know and think about it
- 15:02and you can say, you know what? I see that I want to be the
- 15:06hero, but I'm going to now decide that I'm going to do this
- 15:09not because. I want to be good.
- 15:11So the most important thing, it's very important.
- 15:13Anyone who claims they don't care about either being the hero
- 15:18or feeling great about themselves or something, what if
- 15:21they're they're they're fooling themselves.
- 15:23Every person so I know who's involved in one way or another
- 15:27is something that's a good thing.
- 15:29Oh, it's a challenging point. It's a good thing because
- 15:32you're. On to do.
- 15:33Good, good. This is the year exactly to to
- 15:35both points. You should identify the fact
- 15:38that there's a little bit of other motives that are somewhat
- 15:41even a little bit selfish, but there's also an element that's
- 15:46good. Be honest with yourself.
- 15:48There's a classic example where somebody today who's one of the,
- 15:52I can say his name, one of the biggest fundraisers in the
- 15:54Jewish world today. He has a million institutions in
- 15:57Israel and he went to one of the Ghidolin and the, the Gadol told
- 16:04them, you know, what percent do you think is le schma?
- 16:09What percent did you think of your motive is for Hashem?
- 16:13And he said, I don't know, maybe 5%.
- 16:16That's 5 out of 100%, pretty weak.
- 16:19And you have I said even that that's pretty good.
- 16:21That's what I say. That's great.
- 16:23So in other words, be very real. Everyone's got a lot of motives.
- 16:26Everyone has a lot of different things which could be power,
- 16:30could be controlled. Those are bad.
- 16:31It couldn't be. I want to feel good about
- 16:32myself. That's pretty good.
- 16:34I want to, you know, be the hero.
- 16:35I want to maybe for my kids. There's all other kinds of
- 16:39motives, right? Set my kids up.
- 16:41These are things and these go through people's minds.
- 16:44Let's be very honest. Now you have to identify it.
- 16:48I don't see it yourself, but I'm doing it anyhow, either despite
- 16:52or even with that or anyhow, which means you're clear with
- 16:55yourself and you still feel there's still some good to come
- 16:58out of it once you know the motives.
- 17:01The advantage of knowing that motives is that you'll realize
- 17:07when that's keeping you in it, when the original purpose is
- 17:10keeping you in it. Classic example is, and certain
- 17:13institutions are not willing to close.
- 17:16They had a hassle mission, right?
- 17:19And that mission is over. Whatever it may be, it's over.
- 17:23Thank God they got the job done. Mission accomplished.
- 17:28Why do they need to morph into another institution?
- 17:31Why can't they just stop? Sometimes they do more good.
- 17:35Other times because they have that structure in place where so
- 17:39many people are involved and they can't really handle the
- 17:42fact that they're done. It bothers them that right there
- 17:45is a debate and now you have funding and fundraising and only
- 17:50to many things for a shell and no longer really does this job.
- 17:54How'd that happen? It happened because good people
- 17:56got involved, but the need was gone.
- 17:59They can't let go. That's a classic example.
- 18:02Now. Now is a bad thing, but it's a
- 18:04classic example of this struggle.
- 18:06What's going on over here? Why are we doing this right?
- 18:10I'll be very real. You know, the people always get
- 18:12involved in family politics and then think how that politics
- 18:16goes away. They move the direction to
- 18:18another one. They always find their way.
- 18:20They don't really stop at the family politics.
- 18:23They find a way to apply to a different area.
- 18:25Why 'cause it became their way of life.
- 18:28How'd that happen? They wanted to create peace,
- 18:30they did, but they're not really sure how to stop.
- 18:34This is where the motives get involved, and this is where the
- 18:36pulls get involved. And this is where a person has
- 18:38to tell themselves. Let me be an honest person with
- 18:41myself. I'm trying to figure out why am
- 18:43I getting involved? Let's weigh the three odds and
- 18:45then we'll stop #1 three factors.
- 18:48I'm doing it for Hashem. Hard to be honest with that one.
- 18:51Number two, I'm looking at two sides.
- 18:55I'm trying to make the right decision.
- 18:56What will be the better outcome? And #3I throw myself out to
- 19:00Hashem. And I hope that God brings out
- 19:02the right outcome. These are the three things to
- 19:05weigh every time you're doing a good deed, right?
- 19:09And it's a very fundamental point.
- 19:11And this is really the the blueprint for good people to
- 19:16remain good people, not talking about bad people, not thinking
- 19:20about, you know, something came out there that knows the right
- 19:22from wrong. We're talking about us, which
- 19:25also said they came. But the average person, the
- 19:27average mindset where you're trying to create the path of
- 19:31life, you have to apply these two points.
