- 0:01[SPEAKER_00]: You are about to partake, men at that park, park cast.
- 0:06[SPEAKER_00]: But remember that this park cast is not for everyone.
- 0:10[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 0:12[SPEAKER_00]: It's not for the week of autumn, mind.
- 0:15[SPEAKER_00]: But if you're prepared to proceed.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I'll ask you one thing.
- 0:20[SPEAKER_00]: You sit down.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_00]: You shut the fuck up.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_00]: You smoke on me if you got them.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_00]: And enjoy.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_00]: Columbia, Missouri, 1950.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_00]: A town of about 32,000 people, home to the University of Missouri.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_00]: The Mizutagas.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_00]: Post World War II veterans coming home.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_00]: They can't be picking up.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_00]: No family is starting out.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: Now they were living in a free world.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_00]: It still felt like small town America.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_00]: In many ways, those often left open, maybus looked out at each other, friendly smiles.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_00]: Kids played outside, without any worrying.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_00]: Baby's sitting with something that teenage girls did all the time, trusted work, to make some pocket money, to buy that latest, fat, or accessory.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_00]: And best of all, it was safe, because everyone knew everyone.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_00]: But I guess at the end of the day, no one knows nobody, that one.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_00]: But there were cracks, stunned the show.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_00]: Sure there was slowly, but still there was stunned the show.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_00]: As string of prowlers, peeping thums, a couple attempted rapes, reports of a man and a woman's dress, margin kids through the windows, joking off, nothing substantiated though.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_00]: In 1946, not far away, another young woman had been strangled with a cord and a similar vicious attack.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_00]: People whispered, but life went on.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_00]: Columbia had that mix of college energy, hardworking families, and the quiet assumption that bad things didn't happen here.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_00]: The Chrisman family fit right into Columbia.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_00]: Charles and Lulu make Chrisman owned and ran on his cafe in Stakehouse.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_00]: The best steak and cup of coffee in town.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe the whole state and if you disagree and don't need to pay, throw in a piece of their apple pie and then you got yourself a deal.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_00]: They lived upstairs above the restaurant with their three daughters.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_00]: Solid, respected people making an honest living.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_00]: Their oldest daughter was Jeanette, born March 21st, 1936.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_00]: In March 1950, she was 13 years old, turned 14 in just three days.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_00]: She was an eighth grader at Jefferson, Jr. High School, pretty, intelligent, independent.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_00]: She loved pets, although she couldn't have any because I lived above a restaurant.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_00]: With a strong walk ethic just like a parents, and they drilled it into her, telling how important it was.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_00]: She helped out at the family business when she could, but she was independent,
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: The kind of girl parents called on without hesitation.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_00]: And because this is the important reason why she actually watched the kids that she were babysitting.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_00]: No nonsense, no drama.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_00]: And Janette, while she was mature beyond her age,
- 4:24[SPEAKER_00]: physically developed in a way that made her appear older than the 13 years, about 135 pounds, curse, and all the right places.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_00]: And when she was short, some addresses, some of the older men, well, they noticed.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_00]: She brushed it off and in some ways, she enjoyed that power, that attention.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_00]: But speaking of dresses, there was a pink chiffon dress that Chinat wanted badly.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_00]: Something nice for Easter, more maybe to wear on her birthday.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_00]: And she was making the last payments on it.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: Normal teenage dreams.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_00]: in a normal small town life.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_00]: People around the town remember the pretty brunette with her poodle scuts, her anaponatelle, her red lipstick, squinted into the sun and the photos.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_00]: I guess you will like a 1950s tale of Swift.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_00]: A church going girl who carried herself with a quiet responsibility.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_00]: The kind of oldest daughter who stepped up looked out for a young asciplains.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_00]: Saturday, March 18, 1915, a cold, ugly, spring night, because the storm was building, a gust and wind, and a heavy rain, the turn, and the sleet.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_00]: Temperatures dropping into the mid-20s, which was strange for the time.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: Not the kind of weather that made you want to be out.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_00]: Jeanette's friends tried to talk her in the go-in.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_00]: Was she at that final payment on that pink dress in mind?
- 6:22[SPEAKER_00]: When the call came from the Romac family, asking if she could sit for their three-year-old son Gregory.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_00]: She took it.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_00]: Regular clients, she knew the house, and it was good money.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_00]: They'd probably give the Laurie Bell down the road, and she didn't want that.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_00]: She arrived at the small one-story home, wants to a road around 730pm.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_00]: Still roads at just between what were the western limits of Columbia, purged on the slight hill, quiet, secluded enough.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's still well lit, and safe.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_00]: Once she arrived, Ed Romic, showed her the loaded shotgun he kept by the front door, and he told her how to use it in case trouble came.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_00]: He told her to turn the bright porch light on before open in the door to anyone, standard precaution for a young girl alone with a child, especially on a night like this.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_00]: Little Gregory was already asleep when she arrived, and the radio was playing softly.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_00]: just the way he liked it.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_00]: Adonand Romack left around 750 for a car game with the friends, the Murdox.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_00]: Among those friends also there, were a man named Robert Mueller, local married man with his own kids.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_00]: Someone who used Genet as a babysitter before as well.
- 8:01[SPEAKER_00]: Someone who knew the family, someone who knew she would be damn that night.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_00]: Most likely in one of those shorts got so dresses.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_00]: With a parent's left, Jeanette settled in, the storm outside grew worse, when rattle in the windows, rain and sleet hammer in the roof when the size of the house, men's sign, I was quiet, except for the south radio from the boys' room, in the occasional creek of an old house in bad weather.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_00]: She was alone, with a sleep in shahat, and a shahat gone by the door.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_00]: What happened next is pieced together from the evidence, and that one desperate phone call.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_00]: Sometime later someone came to the house, maybe they knocked, maybe they didn't, maybe she opened the door, trusting,
- 9:06[SPEAKER_00]: because it was someone familiar.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_00]: Or maybe they forced their way in through the side window.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_00]: The house layouts to chest the kill and knew their way around.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_00]: And inside job, one deputy would lay to say he figured so.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_00]: The struggle started or intensified near the kitchen wall phone.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_00]: Jeanette, she most certainly got to it, and she dialed around 10.35pm.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_00]: The boon-cowdy share's office picked it up.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_00]: Deputy Roy, McCow and her to girls' voice, hysterical, terrified, screaming, come quick.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_00]: Raw, please, for help.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_00]: Almost got her all.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_00]: Then the line went that,
- 9:56[SPEAKER_00]: Storm interference, or the attacker, ripping the phone away.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_00]: We're ripping it out of the wall.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_00]: They tried to trace it, but the switchboard was unstaffed, although weather made it impossible right away.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_00]: No immediate response.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_00]: And side that house, the horror unfolded.
- 10:22[SPEAKER_00]: Navadan showed a clear path of violence from the kitchen foam through the hallway and a liver room by the family piano.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_00]: Janet fought hard.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_00]: She was a strong girl, but she was overpowered.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_00]: I saw more and much stronger.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_00]: Been savagely.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_00]: her face scratched, probably by fingernails in the frenzy of the attack.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_00]: The witch officers described as pure rage.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_00]: Her body also showed multiple small puncture wounds that lined up with a metal point of a mechanical pencil from that era.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_00]: Not some fancy art tool, just an ordinary, everyday pencil.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_00]: The killer apparently used as a...
- 11:18[SPEAKER_00]: makeshift weapon during his attack, and it appeared that the child had been taken and every hole would God have given up.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_00]: And I feel I'm sure she didn't know she had.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_00]: The grading, Merlin might have been, she still fought for her life.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_00]: And then came the final horror, the cord from an electric iron in the house, ripped the
- 11:47[SPEAKER_00]: Possibly cut with scissors that won't be a bite, wrapped tightly around a neck, and strangled while the animal fucked the life out of her, but she stopped breathing.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_00]: Aphyxiation, the cause of death, when every day household item turned into a weapon that ended up.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_00]: When the romax came home, a little after one thirty a.m.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_00]: They found the porch lights still on.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_00]: The Venetian blinds open and a way that seemed wrong.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_00]: Both front back doors unlocked, aside when they're broken.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_00]: When in the living room, Janet sprawled naked on the shag carpet,
- 12:50[SPEAKER_00]: with a legs or a test-cleased bread.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_00]: One slip of barely hanging off a foot.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_00]: The foam receiver dangling off the hook nearby.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_00]: The shotgun untouched by the door.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_00]: A little Gregory still asleep in his bed.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_00]: The radio playing the way they left it.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_00]: The sun completely unharmed.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_00]: The killer left the child alone, but destroyed the girl, who was there to protect them.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_00]: The blood had soaked a deep into the carpet.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_00]: The signs of her desperate struggle were everywhere.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_00]: But 13-year-old girl, who had just wanted to earn money for a nice dress for Easter, with those to this.
- 13:41[SPEAKER_00]: The romance called the police.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_00]: words spread fast.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_00]: The next day, March 20th.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_00]: The Columbia Daily Tribune ran Janet's photo on his front page.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_00]: The one of our inner Poodle Scott, leaning up against a car, a box and beauty, looking more in a 20s than our early teens, was squinted eyes and red lipstick.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_00]: The town that died at was safe, woke up to pure terror.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_00]: The hardware stores sold out at that boat and latches in ammunition overnight.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_00]: Women wouldn't open the door for the mailman.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_00]: Baby citizen disappeared from Saturday nights and fear took hold in a way that changed the town.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_00]: The end of innocence.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_00]: As the priest called it, men is summoned.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_00]: And then when no council in back then,
- 14:47[SPEAKER_00]: The town just had the carry on.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_00]: The investigations started immediately.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_00]: And I guess it's said to say that if the warna mess, but it do until one got there.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_00]: These were help billed cops, after all.
- 15:01[SPEAKER_00]: Bone County Sheriff Glenn Powell's department had primary jurisdiction, but Columbia Police Chief EM pawns officers pushed in an odd.
- 15:11[SPEAKER_00]: What followed was a classic small-town jurist-dictional war.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_00]: There it goes, Clashon.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_00]: Information, not shit.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_00]: And petty jellacies getting on the way.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_00]: After all, this were a big case.
- 15:25[SPEAKER_00]: The biggest case at any of them had ever seen, since Jim Guffrey had blown off his own head.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_00]: And I have to catch in his wife given head to the mailman just after lunch.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_00]: And that had happened before the war.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_00]: Pray tell most people that didn't even remember it and more even more bomb back then.
- 15:42[SPEAKER_00]: And there I say the rumors on this case spread like a retard's tongue over his sleeping grandmother's legs.
- 15:50[SPEAKER_00]: Blood hounds have been brought in from the local prison when they trapped a scent from the house through the wet underbrushed to a street corner.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_00]: But lasted in the rain.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_00]: Fingerprints were taken, bloody ones noted, but this was 1950 and forensics had its limits, and although one officer noted, that calm would ripen at every hole that the young girl had.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_00]: My windowed DNA, basic blood type, and all I could do was scoop it up with a spoon and put it in a jam jar until it dried up.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_00]: The heavy rain had washed away out door evidence, public appeals went out.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_00]: Anyone knocked in strange, missing work.
- 16:33[SPEAKER_00]: Sean Scratches were reported.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_00]: Officers worked long shifts.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_00]: One new patrolman sat in the Roma House night after night after night for weeks, waiting.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_00]: She's waiting for a call, waiting for anything.
- 16:50[SPEAKER_00]: dozens and maybe hundreds of people were interviewed and cleared.
- 16:54[SPEAKER_00]: One student even gave a false confession.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_00]: The town was on edge, and the room was kept flying, but the focus narrowed in on one man.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_00]: Robert Mueller married with children out of that card game circle of friends that included the romance, the regular they got together, including on the night of the murder.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_00]: The 27-year-old W.W.2 Marine Corps veteran worked as a tailor and most certainly couldn't use the mechanical pencil.
- 17:30[SPEAKER_00]: He had used Janet as a babysitter for his own kids before.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_00]: He knew she would have been at the roll mark house.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_00]: I'd regularly made comments about how well developed figure, and at one barbecue, once she'd come out and a short skirt.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_00]: Well, he almost choked on his hamburger helper, a child with a figure that could have been twice her age.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_00]: Which will clear enough for all the sea in the picture on the newspaper.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_00]: And boxing beauty with the brains still of a child, and no good we're ever going to come out of that.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_00]: And Mrs. Rolmark had felt uneasy around them as well.
- 18:11[SPEAKER_00]: He'd got handsy touchy feely if you were more than once, and on the night of the murder.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_00]: He'd left the card game early, even though he wasn't.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_00]: Claiming more of his children was sick.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_00]: And it was gone for the hours, certainly long enough.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_00]: The poor damn in the realm of being a suspect.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_00]: And as the kicker, he also carried a mechanical pencil with a metal punch at the end that lined up perfectly with the bunch of marks on Janet's body.
- 18:42[SPEAKER_00]: during the intense questioning all night at the deputy's farmhouse and his alibi, the Nolda, and we're gone too long on the game my lie detected test.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_00]: We turned out to be inconclusive.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_00]: He allegedly said something chilling like, I might have done it, and then forgotten it.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_00]: Sheriff Powell and the others were convinced the evidence fit.
- 19:05[SPEAKER_00]: Opportunity, knowledge of the victim and the house, I was of their opinion that this corn dog eaten Motherfucker did it, but they just couldn't prove it.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_00]: The corn is report which I will read now for you word for word, seemed precise yet vague if that's possible.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_00]: Corners report, Boone County, Missouri, date of examination, March 19th, 1950.

- 21:27[SPEAKER_00]: Several small round punch wounds are noted on the upper torso, arms, and right breast.
- 21:35[SPEAKER_00]: Appearing to have been inflicted by a sharp, cylindrical instrument approximately 1-8 inch
- 21:44[SPEAKER_00]: The neck shows a deep ligature, fear, and circling the throat, with marked bruising and hemorrhage beneath the skin.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_00]: The ligature is consistent with the length of electrical cord removed from a household iron found at the scene.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_00]: signs of violent sexual assault are evident, including bruising and tearing on the anal in genital area, with semen found in the mouth, the genitals, and the anus.

- 23:06[SPEAKER_00]: The examination of the stomach was not cut short, due to limited facilities.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_00]: This examination was conducted under the constraints of available equipment in a small town facilities, photographs and measurements were taken of the official
- 23:23[SPEAKER_00]: The body has been released to the family for burial, following completion of this report.
- 23:29[SPEAKER_00]: Signed, Dr. Elias P. Whitaker, corner of Boone County, Missouri, March 19th, 1950.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_00]: The case fell through and was botched for various reasons.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_00]: There were no proper war and this shoot.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_00]: The prosecuting attorney had been left out of the loop.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_00]: Technicalities got in the way.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_00]: The grand jury didn't indict and Mueller joined the Air Force and left town soon afterwards.
- 24:06[SPEAKER_00]: A couple of years later, he would sue the sheriff and his deputies over the questioning and the way that he'd been treated.
- 24:14[SPEAKER_00]: But he lost.
- 24:16[SPEAKER_00]: Mula lived until 2006.
- 24:18[SPEAKER_00]: Share power remained convinced of his guilt.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_00]: Till his own death, believing connections or influence, helped Mula slip away.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_00]: Other leads existed.
- 24:33[SPEAKER_00]: The earliest string of sex crimes in the area similar to the 1946 Strangling.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_00]: The possibility of a serial predator got sick of staring in the windows that these girls and juck an off and finally put a plan and the action.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_00]: But nothing stuck solid, evidence washed away, come, dried up, and the police were camped by the infighten.
- 25:01[SPEAKER_00]: In the case when colder than a retards tongue, looking melted ice cream off a his own belt buckle.
- 25:08[SPEAKER_00]: Janet was buried on her 14th birthday, March 21st, 1950.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_00]: Where in that pretty pink, short dress, the sheep had been saving up for?
- 25:21[SPEAKER_00]: A mother, Lula May, had to go to the school later, and gather her daughter's books and gym clothes from a locker.
- 25:29[SPEAKER_00]: The kind of quiet, devastating task.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_00]: The no-parent should ever do, or have the face.
- 25:39[SPEAKER_00]: Down tried to move on, but the scars stayed.
- 25:43[SPEAKER_00]: Classmates spoke years later about sleepless nights, the constant fear.
- 25:50[SPEAKER_00]: One friend said it was that they, her little world, fell apart.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_00]: And she cried, and she cried, couldn't sleep.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_00]: The unlocked door air was over, and people remembered
- 26:08[SPEAKER_00]: This murder helped inspire the chilling urban legends, the babysitter, getting strange phone calls.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_00]: The voice on the line, asking if she's checked the children.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_00]: The horrifying realizations that the calls were coming from inside the house.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_00]: Well, he's like one of Stranger calls, true from that fear.
- 26:31[SPEAKER_00]: But the real story didn't need Hollywood exaggeration.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_00]: A girl tried to do the right thing on an honest money, on a stormy night, and a beaten, raped, and strangled with a household cord, while a toddler sleeps nearby.
- 26:52[SPEAKER_00]: The phone call was real, one desperate screen cut short.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_00]: The killer was likely already there, or led him by trust.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_00]: To this day, Janet Chrisman's murder remains unsolved.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_00]: No one has ever been held accountable, whether it was Robert Mueller, or someone else who walked free.
- 27:18[SPEAKER_00]: The system failed him.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_00]: Police he goes.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_00]: Procedure mistakes.
- 27:24[SPEAKER_00]: Rain, wash away evidence.
- 27:27[SPEAKER_00]: Come, Captain Jaws, and it just dried up.
- 27:30[SPEAKER_00]: limited 1950s forensics, all of it combined to rob a 13-year-old girl of not only a life, but just this.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_00]: I think about that, a responsible kid doing what she was supposed to do, saving for something nice, trusting the world around them, and she gets this, being over the head, scratched, punctured, violently sexually assaulted, strangled slowly with an iron cord, while the perpetrator lies on top of her for his own self-pleasure, then left in a pool of blood
- 28:15[SPEAKER_00]: This is the kind of case that reminds you, evil doesn't care about small towns.
- 28:21[SPEAKER_00]: Go go, so Porsche lights and shotguns.
