- 0:16SPEAKER_01: All right, everybody.
- 0:17SPEAKER_01: Welcome back for another episode of B and R at the Movies Podcast.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: I'm Barry.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: And I'm Robin.
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: So this week it was your choice of film, so I'll let you go and take us away with this one.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: So I just wanted to watch something easy.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: This is an easy film to watch.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: It's not gonna bend your mind.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: It's called Flipped.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: Flipped.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Um I do like it because Rob Reiner is the director.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: We love his style of directing.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Just that smoothness.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Sorry, Brad.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Brad Cooper.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: You got a different style.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: Different style.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Rob Reiner, I like his style.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: And it's just easy.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: It's just easy.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: I like this movie because it really is a wonderful cast, and you will probably recognize names and faces.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Maybe not the young people, but the other people.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: But they're usually like they're they're just like solid actors.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: And it's like, wow.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Um I and I just today I didn't want anything heavy.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: I wanted something light.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: So I I will let you know that.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Um so Rob Rainer directed it.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: He helped write it with two other people.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: So he's involved.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Um, and Rob does not put himself in the movie.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: Ah.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: You know, he doesn't do that.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: Well, he has done it.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: Has what movie?
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Shock and awe, the one that we watched.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay, fine.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Okay, fine.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: He he directed that?
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay, fine.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Okay, I take my song.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: He doesn't usually put it in.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: He's not in this movie.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: He doesn't always do it.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: He doesn't always.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: There we go.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: We could say that.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: And so the actors, um, the two young actors you'll see, they're very good, but they're um Madeline Carroll and Callan McAffleck.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Affleck.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: I'd have no idea.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Sorry, Callan.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: It's Mick McAffleck, so it's like like Ben Affleck, kind of?
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: No, it's a little different than Ben Affleck.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: Ohff Affleck.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: Affleff.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: Oh, interesting.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: I think he's Australian.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: I remember watching something that's amazing.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: But he has American action.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Um Rebecca De Moore D Wernardi Marney.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: That name sounds familiar.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: If you've ever seen Risky Business.
- 2:30unknown: Ah, okay.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: She you might not recognize her because she plays the mother.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: I oh really?
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Oh well, I was gonna say I was trying to think of that was a million years ago, risky business.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Oh gosh.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, yeah, before you were born.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: Well probably not too much before I was born, but anyway.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Um Anthony Edwards.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: John Mahoney, which you know John Mahoney.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: I know the name I'm trying to put a face through.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Frasier plays the dad.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: Oh, oh yeah, yes, yes.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: And then Aiden Aidan Quinn, who you may not know the name, but the face, it's like, yeah.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: So these are like really solid working actors.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: And even the young people, I was looking them up a little bit, and they're just still solid working actors.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: They're just, you know, that's what they're doing.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Um but the story is is easy.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: It's uh it's about the young people.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Um, and you know, Rob does a good job with young people, you know, like stand by me.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: He knows how to work 'em.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: He knows how to bring out the best, and I think he does.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Um but the the uh the supporting cast, everybody else, is very good, and the story is very interesting.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: And I kind of I identified with a couple of the the the characters.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: So very cool.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Anyway, so yeah, it's it's an it's a really easy story.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: It's a little bit of a little bit of coming of age, but not super there.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: So but yeah, that is.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: Well, and I feel like if if you have if you have younger actors and the you you have they're the they're the main characters, it almost naturally becomes a coming of age story.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: It is where it's like, you know, it's part of like, oh, kids, what do kids do?
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: Well, kids grow up, and well now it's a coming of age.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: And so and it's the the reason it's called flipped is that it's it's one person's perspective and then it's the other person's perspective.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: That's the flipped.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: Oh now.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Can I ask, like, is it filmed like one person's perspective, like all the way through, like a big chunk, and then we go back and then we do another another?
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: No, it's in small chunks.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: But it does it, but it does it that way where it's a and it's there's a lot of voiceover, so you're kind of imagining what the kids were thinking, you know, what they were thinking at the time.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: Why one was thinking one way and one was thinking completely different.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: This is like film school stuff.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I I think Rob does a great job.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: I think it's really fun, and I think the cast is really good.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: And it was very specific cast.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: He really wanted these people in his movie.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: That's really cool.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that sounds interesting.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: So I and I like that.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: I I of course you know me, I'm a sucker for like, you know, cinematography and editing and like, you know, different ways of showing stuff.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: You'll have a lot to look at, whether you like it all or not.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: Whatever.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: And and again, this movie is quite old.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: It was 2010.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: So okay.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Well, it's getting quite a long time ago.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: It's not a long time ago.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh, it was yesterday.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: Oh, no, wait, well, I'm old.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, 16 years ago.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Oh, this has happened in 16 years.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: I've seen the pictures of these two young actors in this, and it's like, because I makes them in the like their third like late 30s.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: I so I looked him up and then uh the the young the girl, uh Madeline, Carol.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: I looked her up and and she uh she was on the pit the pit.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: And I thought, oh maybe she's like a main character and didn't even notice her.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Oh no.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: No, no, no.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: She did one episode of and I liked it though, um, when someone was watching and because her character name in this is Julie Baker, and they go, Julie Baker's on the pit.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: So you gotta be a weirdo to know that reference.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: All right, well, that'd be fun.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and like you said, like I mean, you know me.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm a sucker for, you know, like I said, like good editing and you know, and you know Rob does good job.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Right, and I know Rob's but yeah, but yeah, whether this will be your taste, that I'm sure this is gonna be a one and done for you.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: But I think I think it'll be something good to talk about.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm gonna go to limb now, and I'm gonna say I cannot think of a Rob Reiner directed film that I don't like.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah, yeah, that's why it's pretty cool.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: So that's why we're on that.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: So that's what I'm thinking.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I it's like like you said, you put Rob Reiner behind it.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: I'm pretty much on board.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: And it's like, you know, you think you know, and once you get once you know what it is, you get the vibe.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: It's like, oh, I'm in the mood for that.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, let's do it.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there you go.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: So, all right, it'll be interesting.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: All right, sounds good.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: All right, got it.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: Are we all good?
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: We're good.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: All right, well, we are gonna go and dive in and watch Flipped, and then we will come back a little bit to talk about it.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: Okay, all right, we will be back in a little while.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: All right, everybody, welcome back.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: We just got done watching Flipped.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: And since this was my first time watching it, I'll take us away.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: Now I must say, yeah, that be honest, I don't believe I've seen the whole thing.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: No.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: And I I thought I had you watch like part of it, a bit of it.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: It was the b it's definitely the beginning.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: The beginning.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: So I was gonna say, so I can't say I've never seen the seen seen the whole thing, but seeing the whole thing all the way through, I definitely haven't.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: No.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: Um because there were definitely scenes in there that I definitely didn't remember.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: Okay and I didn't remember the ending.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: So okay, good.
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: So right, so I could definitely say that.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: Um, but I really I I didn't remember seeing it and then seeing the part of that that I had seen.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: And um, I really like the concept of it.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: I really think that's really cool, especially from teenagers uh, you know, point of view stuff.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: Because, you know, they you don't you don't know a lot what a teenager is thinking at the time, you know, if you're not going through it, and it's like, yeah, you're doing they're dealing with you know crazy emotions and crazy, you know, stuff going on, and it's like they don't know how to process things and stuff.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: So it's so that concept of it is very is really pretty interesting.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: I I do like that a lot.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: Um I I like that concept.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: I wish it was kind of you could you can make that like on like a big grand scale and something, but this is kind of like a little small little It is just a small little story, yeah.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: Um, and I oh I really like the shots that are are reshot or shot from different perspectives, so that way it's that way you get the feeling of more more uh from the other perspective.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: Um I didn't remember hating Anthony Daniels so much.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Um, didn't you want to just punch him in the face?
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: Knock him out, just knock him out.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: Oh, and just just it's just like shut up, shut up, shut up.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: But that was his character, and he did it really well.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: He did it really well, absolutely.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: It was almost too good.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: Right, right.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: And I was thinking, I'm like, yep, this is you know, Dr.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: Green that I want to punch out, you know, goose, goose himself is up there that I wanna I wanna put to the wall.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's you know but he's a solid actor.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: He is, yeah, he can do that, and he stayed in character time.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: Definitely did.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: It's like people sometimes people don't change that fast.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: And I I kind of I liked it that like from both, you know, the kids pers each one of the kids' perspective about him were a little different.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: And I thought that was I thought that's kind of that was kind of interesting.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: Um and then the dad, the guy who plays uh Fraser's dad.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: Um, I just his name just escapes me.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: John Mahoney.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: Mahoney, yes.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: I think he's he is fantastic.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: Isn't he?
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: He I think again another solid actor.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: Anything I've ever seen him in.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: Um him and like John Spencer, uh, you know, from West Wing in the play Leo, I think like those two guys are like just like yes, I I see the solid yeah, kind of almost like that generation, yeah.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: But yeah, yeah, very solid actors.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: And I mean you can see the quality of all of the characters and the actors that played each one.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: They're really good.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: And I think yeah, they're definitely well defined in this world.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: And um even though some of them are kind of like on the cliche kind of side a little bit.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, but not completely.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: No, I mean there there's a little bit.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: I mean, there's the you know, the boys that are gonna be, you know, go, you know, starting a band, and you know, there's the the high school, you know, the the teenage girl that's you know going out with the you know, going out with the guys and stuff in the middle of the night, you know, dad's yelling be back when I love it, you know, and stuff like that.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: But I like it when they were asked about, well, I guess you're not going to college.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: Well, no.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: And it's like, no, they've been accepted.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: So it's not like you know, they're and and how he was saying, well, they're hoodlums and all that kind of stuff.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: And it's like And I can't I can't I can't stand people that that just prejudge people all the time like that.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: And it just flies out of their mouths, and you know there's so many people that do that.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: Well, and it was like the same thing like with his buddy at school that was doing the same thing too.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: And it was yeah, it it's I I almost forgave him because he was supposed to he's a younger person.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: Right, yeah, stupid.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: He was young and stupid, yeah.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but the father, no, no, no, no.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: No, no, excuse me.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: He knew better, right?
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: Definitely knew better.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: Um, I always I find this quite interesting, interesting um cinematically, where it's especially period pieces that are supposed to take place in the 50s and 60s, I see this a lot, of like softer focus where it's like almost like the lens is a little dirty when they're filming it, and it's just kind of like a casey and kind of halo-y kind of look, kind of going through everything.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: Like it's not sharp color and neon.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I yeah, and I think that's kind of like supposed to like give like the nostalgia kind of fine kind of vibes.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: And I think like because like when you're watching TV at that time, you're not watching high definition TV.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: You know, everything was kind of like not as crisp and sharp and everything, and I think that that's the kind of to kind of put you back into that in with you know doing cinematically.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: Um, I it was kind of in I did like it kind of interesting um that it there was this contrast, a visual contrast between the two homes, um, where they even seemed to be lit a little differently.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: Like the the boys' home, it um always seemed to be a little bit brighter, a little bit more warmer colors, and then her house, it was always little cooler tones, and then kind of and just more of like little heavier shadows that were kind of kind of in there, just to kind of give you a different different vibe and a different different feel between the homes.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: Which kind of was a contrast between the two families and was kind of like that push and pull bet between the two.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: Um, so yeah, so I thought that was I thought visually that it was it was done really well like that.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: Uh I like that.
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: Um the story is it's it's okay.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: I mean, there's it's it's a simple story.
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: It's a very simple story.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: There's not a whole there's not a whole lot of wild and crazy, I guess I could say.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: For it was a YA novel, young adult.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: It's a young adult.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: So it's yeah.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: Um did they have basket boy auctions when you were in school?
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: Not specifically that name, but yeah, there was stuff like that going on.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: That's so weird.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: But you know, I mean, this was early 60s.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: You know, I was like, Yeah, this was supposed to be 63.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: It's supposed to be 63, I think.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: But in the 60s, yeah.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: I know it's and really it was just the cute boys got the well and then why were boys in the audience having to watch it?
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: But it was mandatory.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: But then well, and I kept thinking, I'm like, so after the boys go, did the girls come out and then they have like the girl, you know, the girls get optioned off?
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: No.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: It's like no, it was just it was just the boy.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's very odd.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: It's very but no, that that that that is not perfect.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: No, but I don't know.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: That's no, but yeah, that was kind of kind of creepy, kind of creepy.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but you know, it's all in a controlled environment.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: You're in the school, and I love how when she says go to the multi-purpose room.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Nobody says that anymore.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: Okay, I remember that, but nobody says that anymore.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: But that's what then the room was called, the multi-purpose room.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, so I that I was just like, uh, I mean, I like it's I didn't think it was extremely far-fetched, but I was just like, it was a little weird.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: Still a little weird.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: No, but that's just yeah, it's just the way it was.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: It's the way it was.
- 15:32unknown: Yeah.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, but I uh young at the young actors, I thought they did a fantastic job.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: I mean, they had to kind of yeah, the whole thing.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: And for two young actors, I thought they did very well.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: I was very impressed with that.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: So right, absolutely.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: And you know, I yeah, I like the the contrast of being like, okay, I think this is what is happening in this moment, and then the other person's like, I think this is what's happening, and then it's like, you know, then they very rarely ever lined up to be and thinking the same thing.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: So, but I thought but no, I thought it was it was really good.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: I mean, they had to be um they had to have funny moments, emotional moments, um, you know, and you know, so they had it they had to really carry it.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: Um and then the guy who plays um the brother, um, the one that the one that's in the institution.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: Um the only other thing I know him from is the show Alias.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: Oh, really?
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: Uh, because he plays Marshall in Alia on Alias, where he's the tech guy.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: And so it's like that's the only other only other thing I know him from.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: Um, but it I thought, you know, he that was that's a tough, that's a tough uh role to do.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's it's definitely not easy.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: And that's I thought he did a good job.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: Right, right.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: But I think they gave it some heart.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: I think I think that's the whole thing with all the characters.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: They gave them some heart.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: So you you can't be cliche if you're giving your character heart.
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: And I I think it helps to try to show them as full, well-rounded people, and no no person is one, you know, completely one-sided.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: Yes, and nobody is all good or all bad.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: You know, and in, you know, and I I really liked it when it was the her parents that got in the big fight.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I've I was just thinking that too.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: How they handled it.
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: And I'm going, oh wow, that is a good family.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: Because you you do get angry and you do kind of lose it a little bit.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: But then you know how to handle it afterwards.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: You know how to speak to someone and and you know, discuss it calmly with them and let you know.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: Like core has prevailed.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and don't just let it sit there.
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: And yeah, because it it it legitimately felt like it was a like a real situation, it's a real fight.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: And it's like, so and that's what I liked about the the you know, the the concepts and stuff, and it it's all it's all real life stuff.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: It's nothing, nothing is extremely far-fetched of like what's going on and w what they're trying to do, and you're like, oh, nobody would ever do that.
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: And it's like, no, this it's all all based in in reality.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: It's definitely possible.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: So yeah, so I like I like that.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: That was that was good.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: Um I don't know.
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: I mean, like I said, it's a it's a simple, it's you know, kind of kind of easy.
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: It's an easy ride.
- 18:23SPEAKER_01: It's an easy ride, you know.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: It is, and it's not too mind-boggling, right?
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: But it but it's a pleasant ride, and I think it's because Rob Rainer can make it pleasant.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's he's he's driving it this thing, so right.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: And I I just think he he just made it.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: He took a simple story and made it interesting.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: He put really good actors in there.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: Um and and I just think it worked.
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: I find something very interesting about this film.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: Oh, what's that?
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: Is that nobody wears t-shirts.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: No, there's only one shot of like just a plain white t-shirt when he wears and his mom looks at him and tells him to go get changed.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: Or give go get go get ready.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: We're talking the early 60s, you didn't wear t-shirts.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: And it's like I didn't wear t-shirts.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: It's all button-up shirts.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: It's all there's no polo.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: And all the girls are wearing dresses.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: All the girls are wearing.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: Oh, I mean, uh, but I was thinking, I'm like, okay, you know, don't you have like some lounging around where don't you have like I'm just hanging at home kind of kind of stuff to wear?
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: No.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: And it's like No, T-shirts were for under there were they were called under shirts.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: Because they were under their shirt.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: But I so they didn't wear them as a shirt.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: But like that didn't happen.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: You're just like that didn't happen.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: It's like on your off time.
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: It's like you get like a graphic, you know, a graphic tee or something.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: They did not have graphic tees in early 60s.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: What are you what planet are you from?
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: Well, I wasn't around in the 60s.
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: And it's like I'm just I don't know.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: It's yeah, I gotta tell you, I it wasn't until 1970 that I was allowed to wear pants to school.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: And this was supposed to be 63.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: So yeah, we weren't real progressive with the clothes.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: Well and and and early 60s.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: Late 60s, everything changed.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: Early 60s, you're still early 60s, you're still in the 50s.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: And they they kept it there, and that's where it belonged.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: If it was 63, no, that's exactly what it would look like.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: And no, no t-shirts.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: Because they weren't called t-shirts, they were called under shirts.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: Even girls had them.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: We had under shirts, we put them under our shirts.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: No, I get no, I understand.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: I understand under shirt.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: I own plenty of them.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: But I'm also thinking, like, come on, no, you don't have like just the the t-shirt.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: Just a t-shirt.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: It's like I don't know.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: It's just weird.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: I always I find it I find it a little odd.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: But like I said, you didn't live in the early 60s.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: It's in a lot.
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: Well, I wouldn't have thought it weird at that time then.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: It would have been like that's the norm.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't know.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: It's just it's just something that it's just kind of like, okay, I guess you know, you're you're sitting around at home and I'm wearing a I'm still wearing a button-up shirt.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: And again, you gotta think this is like suburbs, right?
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: Very white.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: Um, so it's not like inner city.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: Very true.
- 21:17SPEAKER_00: It's not like inner city.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: It's very white.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: Good, good point.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: Very completely white movie.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: I'm yeah, that might have a lot to do with it, too.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: That might have a lot to do with it.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: It was really just showing how that demographic.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: Also trying to geographically place this place.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: Now he has a pennant that's above his above his bedroom Detroit Tigers.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: So I was thinking like, okay, could be, you know.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: Could be.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: Could be, but there's no well, I guess I I wasn't looking at license plates.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: Normally I would I normally I would have kind of done something like that.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: I don't know if they could shots.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: If I was on a rewatch of it, I'd probably.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: Right, exactly.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: But no, and yeah, so no, I and it was supposed to be nondescript, I think.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: But the the Detroit Trike Tigers could I mean he could just be a fan, I guess.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: Well, and that yeah Well, and where did they move from to there?
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: Did they move from Detroit to wherever they are?
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: Because I don't think they ever said where they had lived at before.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: Because they were moving in.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's the first shot.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it wasn't like, oh, we're moving from the city, you know, to the suburbs or something like that.
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: You know, it wasn't it wasn't identified like that.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, this was very very conservative.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: Did they say what the the boy's dad did his work for work?
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: No.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: I didn't think they ever did.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: And it's like okay.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: Because they were saying that the that her that the girl's father was like a bricklayer.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he said a bricklayer.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: And then and then he did paintings on the side.
- 22:53SPEAKER_00: And I I could tell the way he said bricklayer, that he probably was more of a like an office guy.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: And that's why I was thinking, like, he's like an accountant or he's like insurance or something like that.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he takes he wears a tie.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: He wears a tie.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: There we go.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: I guess it's the difference.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: It's like whether or not you wear a tie.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: Because everybody's wearing a bucket shirt.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: So it's we do wear a tie.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: Well, and he seemed to look down on everybody.
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: He did.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: And it was uh that it's just so disgusting.
- 23:28SPEAKER_01: And it's just I and like we said, we understand it's because he's a great he's a great actor that we can believe it, but it's just like boy, ooh.
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: It just gets under my skin, and I just want to knock him through the wall.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: And you want someone to really put him in this place, and nobody really does.
- 23:46SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: I mean, the daughter tries to she calls him a name and he slaps her.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: Um the grandfather, you know, that one little line, and I heard the laugh.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: Something about dying because uh he goes, so he goes, shoot me now, careful what you wish for.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: That's a good one.
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: Oh, you're feeling him, aren't you?
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you're feeling him.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: He's he was my he's my favorite.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: He was my favorite, my favorite character, and he's my favorite on Fraser, too.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: So um but yeah, uh yeah, overall, I mean, overall, it's a I think it's definitely a very nice film.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: And nice is the word for it.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: It's not spectacular, it's nice.
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: And is it PG?
- 24:31SPEAKER_00: It's gotta be.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: I was gonna say, I don't see a 13 looming anywhere in this film.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: I don't I can't imagine.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: But yeah.
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: I don't even but you know, I mean Is there even a cuss word that's even said like throughout the whole film?
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: I don't I'm not even sure.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: Maybe.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: Anyway.
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: Anyway, yeah.
- 24:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:50SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah.
- 24:51SPEAKER_00: Um I just I just like it because you know, Rob Reiner did a lot of a lot of movies, a lot of different feel I I feel a lot in his films.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: You know, I get the feeling of them.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: And um well he's an actor's director, so he he knows to get how to get the best out of his people because he's been on the other end of the those directions.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: But I I just really like it that this is just one of one of his his softer movies.
- 25:18SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: And it's a nice movie.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: It's just really it is very nice.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: I th I'm sure it's very um true to the material, to the novel.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: Um, and it's it's I just think it's a really nice project that he did.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: I thought he did a really good job.
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: And that that's the one thing I I like about Rob Reiner's uh filmography over over the span of his life, where it's like he did some that that got a lot of notoriety, got a lot of you know, it made a lot of lot of money.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: And then he just does some that is just like this cute little project and stuff, but it's like a help write it, I'm gonna produce it.
- 25:58SPEAKER_00: He obviously believed in it.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: Well, I knew he I I knew he produced it.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: It's Castle Rock film, so it's like right there.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: It's like he put his name right on it.
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: So as we have a uh the police.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: I was gonna say we live in the city if you can't tell.
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we do.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: Um as we get more road nose right there.
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: Um but anyway, uh but yeah, um, so uh yeah, so Rob Reiner's career of like of stuff, I I like how how varied it is.
- 26:30SPEAKER_01: I like I like that he he doesn't stick to like one style, one genre or anything.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: It always seems like whatever he thought was interesting, he would just go and he would just go and do it.
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: And I believe too, yeah.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he believed in everything that he did.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: You know, well it's like it it's like like you said, like not only is he directing, producing, and co-writing the screenplay, so he's he's backing it.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: He's definitely putting he's definitely putting into it.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: It's like no, he's like, I definitely believe in this project.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and and like you said, doesn't mean he has to be in front of the camera.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: Or be you know, he's totally fine being being behind it.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 27:13SPEAKER_01: He can do all that, right?
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, doesn't need to be.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: I and I like I always respected him for that.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: He could be in front of the camera, but he Oh, easily, you know, but he could have played the grandfather, a hundred percent.
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: He could have been like, yeah, it's a great role.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: I can I'll I'll take it.
- 27:29SPEAKER_01: You know, but he didn't need he didn't need to.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: No, and I I like and and really I like the choices for the cast very, very much.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: It's just and and really, I mean, if you look this up and all these actors, and it's like yeah, you've probably seen him in some things, but they were like never major, you know.
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: Maybe John Mahoney, who is probably the most major.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: Well, and Anthony Daniels, definitely, you know, he's he did some big stuff.
- 27:53SPEAKER_01: Anthony Edwards.
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: Oh, sorry, Edwards, sorry, yeah.
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry, Anthony Edwards.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, because he had he didn't.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: They're just hardworking people.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: They're doing all kinds of stuff, you know.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: They're working actors.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: They're just keep on working.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: You know, yeah, and gotta respect them.
- 28:14SPEAKER_01: Right, exactly.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: Totally.
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: So yeah.
- 28:17SPEAKER_01: So uh yeah, so I think it I mean it's definitely a definitely a a nice, fun, fun little film.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: Um it's a family film.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, definitely.
- 28:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's that's what I was trying to think.
- 28:27SPEAKER_01: I'm like, yeah, I don't I don't foresee you know, that that's what I was thinking.
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: PG would definitely be, you know, be appropriate.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: I mean the there's like the scene with the the brother in the in the ice cream parlor that might get a little a little much for like somebody really little, but as far as like you know, ten and above and so.
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, it would be just fine.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: They'd probably be very interested in it.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: Oh, all right.
- 28:55SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, you you definitely made a good one.
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: So it was easy.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: I needed something easy too.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 29:02SPEAKER_01: I like that.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 29:04SPEAKER_01: Well, should we wrap up?
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: Well, thank you everybody for listening.
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: Uh, make sure you guys go check out Flipped.
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: And until next time, I'm Barry.
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: And I'm Robin.
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: And we will talk to you guys later.
