- 1:14Dollar The Shepherd Man are parts three and four from Hollywood. It's time now
- 1:19for Johnny Dollar. This is Missus Streeter at doctor Shepherd's office. Yes,
- 1:26doctor Shepherd gave me your hotel number. He said you were to come in
- 1:30for a head X ray. Let me talk to the doctor about that.
- 1:33Well, he's out on the house calls right now, mister Dollar. He'll
- 1:36be back late this afternoon, he seemed very concerned me. You ought to
- 1:38be a friend that has banged me on the head with a gun this morning.
- 1:41That's why the X ray. Well, could you possibly come in and
- 1:44have it made? Doctor was most insistent. All right, missus Treeter,
- 1:47I'll be right over. Good night and every weekday Night Bob Bailey and the
- 1:57transcribed Adventures the Man with the Action packed Expense account America's fabulous freelance insurance investigator,
- 2:04Yours truly, Johnny Dollar. Expense accounts submitted by special Investigator Johnny Dollar
- 2:23to Richard Porter for Ady Webster Boulevard, Providence, Rhode Island. The following
- 2:28is an accounting of expenditures during my investigation of the Shepherd matter. Expense account
- 2:36Item four one dollar cab fare from my hotel to Richard Porter's office. Porter
- 2:39was sympathetic. You know, I feel very responsible for this, mister Dollar.
- 2:43I hired you to look into all the ill I don't go away.
- 2:46I haven't hit on the head before. Do you have anything to drink in
- 2:49here? Oh? Sure? Sure? You never can tell when a snake
- 2:53will come up and bite you. Yeah, here, thanks. I suppose
- 3:00you came in to give me your expense sheet. Now that it's all settled.
- 3:04Not exactly, mister Porter. It doesn't settle for me certainly. You
- 3:07know, I'll assume many medical expenses involved here that I'm not talking about.
- 3:09That, mister Porter said out. Now, Look, there's something going on
- 3:15here and we might as well have it out. You hired me to investigate
- 3:17a client who wanted to buy eighty thousand dollars worth of straight life insurance,
- 3:21right eh. Now, that client explained why he called for that insurance,
- 3:24not to my satisfaction, but he explained it. He said a man named
- 3:28Paul Forbes had threatened his life, threatened it because doctor Shepherd had advised Forbes's
- 3:32wife to get a divorce. I know you didn't believe this, but the
- 3:35facts now seemed to bear it. I went over to see Forbes this morning
- 3:38to talk to him about his threats. I managed to get my name out,
- 3:40and Forbes attack me. So I got this. Then Forbes ran out
- 3:44Missus Forbes and a servant in the house gave me first date. All the
- 3:47time they were doing it, they were apologizing for Forbes and his violence.
- 3:51Finally, doctor Shepard came in, called the police and told them to pick
- 3:53up Forbes and the police will pick him up if they haven't already, and
- 3:57doctor Shepherd will prefer charge. And that won't be that, mister port not
- 4:00as far as I'm concerned. Doctor Shepherd's story is still leaky. I'm sorry,
- 4:03but I think it has more credence than ever in view of what's happened.
- 4:06You told me yourself. His wife and the servant admitted Forbes had threatened
- 4:10doctor Shepherd's life. Oh, I believe that part. But Shepherd lies so
- 4:14much you can get to believing him. What lies? For heaven? Say?
- 4:16Oh, for one thing is reason for not calling the police right away?
- 4:19I mean about how delicate missus Forbes's condition was. She looked pretty healthy
- 4:24to me this morning. Another thing. He described Forbes as a man with
- 4:28homicidal tendencies. Now, doctor Shepherd supposed to be an expert on behavior,
- 4:31and he thought that if I talked to Forbes I might settle the matter peaceably.
- 4:35But Forbes attacked me as soon as I told him my name. I
- 4:38didn't get a chance to talk. Doctor Shepherd has no control. He felt
- 4:42pretty sure I could talk to Forbes. You don't like that, let me
- 4:45go on. What reason did Forbes have to hit me? He didn't know
- 4:48me from a load of coal. Somebody put him up to it. Oooh,
- 4:51what do you think Shepherd? For some reason, Shepard was the only
- 4:55one who knew I was going right over there. But why, I don't
- 4:58know. What would he gain my business for an X ray? Eh,
- 5:01you're joking. I suppose I am, but I got a headache, I
- 5:03feel off. Oh here, how about missus Forbes? Oh here NICs.
- 5:11Oh. She seemed like a genuine enough person, not sick the way I
- 5:14expected her to be. Someone slugged her recently. There was a bruise under
- 5:17one eye. Shepherd said her husband was an erratic, ruthless, violent man.
- 5:20Well look, I'm stubborn, mister Porter. I still think Shepherd's been
- 5:24lying to me, if for no other reason than I think I know the
- 5:26breed. What's all this got to do with the insurance application? Well that's
- 5:30another thing I don't know. Expense account item five three dollars cab fare to
- 5:35doctor Shepherd's one story building to have my head x ray. Shephard was still
- 5:40out, but Miss Streeter did the honors almost in silence. Outside of sit
- 5:44still and hold it, nothing much was said. The picture's okay, mister
- 5:49dolla. I looked at it. I didn't see anything wrong. Of course,
- 5:51the doctor will call you when he's had a chance to see it.
- 5:54Swall, you must have got quite a blow. That's a nasty bruise you
- 5:58have. Well, it's pretty good, all right. He swung his gun
- 6:00hard. Oh, doctor will be back about mid afternoon. You can call
- 6:04you at your hotel. Yes, thank you for coming in. I want
- 6:09to ask you a question, Mistereter. Yes, are you in love with
- 6:14him? What are you in love with doctor Sheppard? Well, that's rather
- 6:18my own business, isn't it, unless, of course, in your investigation
- 6:23of whatever you're investigating. For some reason, I'm under your scrutiny. I
- 6:27suppose it is, And I suppose I can take that to say, yes,
- 6:30I'd become rather angry with you, mister Dollar. But frankly you seem
- 6:32rather ridiculous. I suppose so he's a liar, isn't he? I mean,
- 6:38Shepherd? One more question. I told you on the phone a friend
- 6:44of doctor Shepherd's did this to my head. Now did you ever ask me
- 6:47who that friend was? I think you'd be curious about a thing like that,
- 6:53Miss Treeter. I think I have a great deal of work to do,
- 6:57mister dollar expense account Item six another three bucks. Some more care fair
- 7:08this time back to my hotel where I picked up my rented car, filled
- 7:11it with gasoline Item seven, five dollars and thirty cents, and drove out
- 7:14to Pawtucket. At the home of missus Clara Shephard, I explained my name
- 7:17and business to an elderly man who answered the door. He asked me to
- 7:20wait a moment, then returned and said Missus Shepherd would see me. She
- 7:25was a bright looking, gray haired woman in her mid sixties, elegantly groomed
- 7:29and obviously well cared for. We went through the politenesses, then got down
- 7:32to business. My son applied for eighty thousand dollars worth of life insurance and
- 7:40named me beneficiary. That's about it. I wonder what he's up to.
- 7:46So do we? You mean so do I? You don't trust anyone,
- 7:48do you, mister Dalla. He said his life had been threatened. He
- 7:53told me he wanted to make certain you were well taken care of in case
- 7:56anything happened to him. He was lying, wasn't I haven't seen him talk
- 8:03to him, even had a Christmas card from him in three years. Maybe
- 8:09he does worry about his poor old mother now, and then I'm flattered.
- 8:13What you're saying about him isn't very flattering. Oh, I don't think Charles
- 8:16ever thought much of me as a mother. Still doesn't, I'm sorry to
- 8:20admit. But then I don't think too much of him as a son.
- 8:24So there we are. Is it too early for a cocktail? Mister Dalla?
- 8:30How do you explain him already having a twenty thousand dollar policy on himself
- 8:33and wanting to kick it up to one hundred You the beneficiary. No explanation.
- 8:37That's why I suggested a cocktail to my friends here. Charles is a
- 8:43successful doctor in Providence who calls me faithfully every day, sends me gifts.
- 8:50He is always assured that I am well and happy and occupied in my old
- 8:54age. I guess I like you, mister Dollah, perhaps because with all
- 9:01your gruffness, you might be nice to your mother. No, Charles and
- 9:07I aren't close, never have been. I can tell you this. I
- 9:13don't need this closeness, at least not in a financial way. If Charles
- 9:22were to die and I received a hundred thousand dollars, it would mean a
- 9:24rather difficult tax problem. If he were to die out of me would die
- 9:33too. I'd like you to have just one martini with me, and then
- 9:41you may go, mister Daller. I had the one martini with a tall,
- 9:46stately woman who was struggled against tears. It was an old struggle with
- 9:50her increasingly difficult, I guessed as the years kept on. We talked no
- 9:54more of a son or the insurance of the threat on his life. I
- 9:58left there about four o'clock in the afternoon. I drove back over to Providence
- 10:01and got to doctor Shepherd's office about a quarter to six. A broad shouldered
- 10:05man and a tweet suit was in the reception room. He got to his
- 10:07feet when I walked in, Doctor Shepherd. No, don't I know you?
- 10:13Yeah? I was thinking the same. Wait a minute, Yeah,
- 10:16your name is a dollar, your insurance investigator. You're Phil Crosby. I
- 10:22met you in new Hartman once. I didn't know you were down here.
- 10:26Hey, you must be the one. Is Doctor Shepherd called downtown about a
- 10:31threaten in his life and sett an insurance investigator been slugged trying to help him
- 10:33out of it. Yeah, that's right. Where is he I don't know.
- 10:37I rang that buzzer. There's no one around at all. What's this
- 10:41all about? A man named Paul Forbes threatened the doctor's life. He slugged
- 10:45me. You got to pick up out on him. Yere, No,
- 10:48not yet. I've been the doctor down all day long, been out on
- 10:50house calls, emergencies, everything else. But you have to get his signature
- 10:54on a complaint. I thought that was all taken care of her. Now.
- 10:56Well, Hello, I'm a streeter. This is Phil Crosby from the
- 11:03police department. I like to see doctor Shepherd. Is anything the matter?
- 11:07I just want to see him cooldness. He was here ten minutes ago.
- 11:11He sent me over to the pharmacy to pick up these things. Oh,
- 11:16we had an emergency twelve thirteen Putnam Street. I had a note from him.
- 11:22Yes, messy please no name on this, miss Streeter. You recognize
- 11:28the address at all? No, I don't. Doctor wouldn't take a random
- 11:33emergency and this it was very unusual. This might be unusual, Phil,
- 11:35this is done by the water. How about off? Do you think Forbes
- 11:39man had a gun? Plenty rough? I rode down on the police car
- 11:43with Phil Crosby. I had a feeling about the acuteness of that emergency.
- 11:48As a matter of fact, I had a feeling about the acuteness of everything
- 11:50that had happened that day, from the time I half praised man had slugged
- 11:52me with a gun. The feeling was heavier than ever when we hit the
- 11:56neighborhood. Come on, all right, wait, twelve thirteen Putnam Street.
- 12:07That it had to be that vacant lot over there. This is twelve forty
- 12:11here. The rest belongs to the warehouse. Yeah, Phil, uh the
- 12:16car MD on the plates, Yeah, Yeah, that's doctor Shepherd's car.
- 12:24Mod is still warm. Must be around here somewhere looking for the address.
- 12:28That's a dead end there. I better call in for some help. FOG's
- 12:33coming in if he's wandering around here. Yeah, Phil. Crosby went off
- 12:37to find a telephone and request help. I stood by doctor Shepherd's car,
- 12:41waiting and listening and smoking. Nothing happened, No one cried out, no
- 12:46guns went off. Then Crosby drove up in the police car. Come on,
- 12:52reports in the report was in. All right. We drove two blocks
- 13:01down the street, where a small curious crowd of people had already gathered in
- 13:03the cheerless fart. A uniform man from the Harbor Division was standing over what
- 13:11appeared to be a bundle of clothes lying in a heap. We bent over
- 13:15it, and Phil looked up at me with a question mark. That Shepherd
- 13:16Johnny, Yeah, that's him. Yeah, I'd say he's been dead less
- 13:22than half an hour from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Dollar, Bill
- 13:46Crosby Dollar, were you in bed? Oh God, put on your coat
- 13:48and come on down town. Can't I wait all morning? Nope? I
- 13:50want me to send somebody out to pick you up. Are you talking about
- 13:54an arrest? I might be Dollar. Whatever I have to do to keep
- 13:58you around, I might get out of my own Steve Palm fifteen minutes from
- 14:01two or threes into all? Okay, I may take sixteen minutes if I
- 14:05feel like, and maybe you'll need longer. I want a real good story
- 14:09about Paul Forbes, a better one than you've told so far. Expense accounts
- 14:20submitted by a special investigator Johnny Dollar two, Richard Porter for Ady, Webster
- 14:24Boulevard, Providence, Rhode Island. The following is an accounting of expenditures during
- 14:28my investigation of the Shepherd matter. Swindle sheet item seven ten cents one newspaper.
- 14:35It carried the story of doctor Shepherd's murder and told how his life had
- 14:39been threatened by Paul Forbes earlier in the week. Obviously, doctor Charles Sheppard
- 14:43had been lured to his death by Forbes, who had telephoned him, pretended
- 14:46to need a physician, waited until the victim appeared, and then shut him
- 14:50down. The police had an apb out for Paul Forbes. All parties concerned
- 14:54were notified. The deceased was survived by his mother, Missus Clara Sheppard.
- 14:58At Pawtuckett's Amen coming right in. Now, let's sit down. There were
- 15:13about six people in Crosby's office, among them Richard Porter, who had hired
- 15:16me to investigate Shepherd because of a suspicious insurance application, a uniform officer from
- 15:22the Harbor Patrol who had discovered Shepherd's body, and two other men from Crosby's
- 15:26staff. I told him how I had been hired, that I didn't believe
- 15:30all a Shepherd's story about the threat on his life. I told him about
- 15:33Forbes slugging me for no apparent reason. I also mentioned the insurance matter had
- 15:37never been satisfactorily explained. Well, it's never going to be explained as far
- 15:39as I can see, doll. Oh, I'll find an explanation. Phil.
- 15:43You solve your murder and I'll do what I have. We've got it
- 15:45solved. All you have to do is pick up Forbes. You know that
- 15:48I don't know anything. You get hoppy with me on the phone and you
- 15:50start talking about arrest, and I don't know anything. You said that when
- 15:52you went to see Shepherd yesterday morning, he waved a gun at you at
- 15:56thirty two. That's right. It wasn't on his body. He knew Forbes
- 15:58hadn't been picked. His life wasn't as much dangerous. Ever, Why didn't
- 16:02he carry the gun? You know, that's a pretty good question, Phil.
- 16:04What else he allegedly went out on an emergency call tonight? No little
- 16:08black bag in his car, no little black bag by his body. What
- 16:11doctor goes out on any call without his bag? Oh? I wouldn't let
- 16:15that worry me so much. I'd find out if it was an emergency or
- 16:19he knew who was going to meet him when he went out. I thought
- 16:22you might have some ideas if you talk to missus Forbes of course, I've
- 16:25talked to her. He hasn't any idea where her husband might be hiding.
- 16:29She's sure he killed doctor Shepherd. That servant in the house is sure.
- 16:33He told me about Shepherd being threatened by Forbes. Shepherd told you about being
- 16:37threatened Forbes slugged you, slugged missus Forbes and running around tod like I'm mad
- 16:41man all day. But everything you say and every way you say it,
- 16:45it comes out Shepherd was lying. I did it on purpose. I wanted
- 16:48to worry you to death. And every officer in this town has Forbes description
- 16:51and the license of his car. We ought to get him before the night's
- 16:52out. He's the boy who luck film. He's a good policeman with a
- 17:00lot of doubts, and he was mad about them. And that's what it
- 17:03generally takes to get mad as straightened out. I found Kareem Streeter at the
- 17:08Morgue, standing beside the marble slab on which a late employer had been laid.
- 17:12She looked pale and wan in a stiff white uniform and blue nurses cape.
- 17:17Her eyes were red with tears. No sound escaped her. Then she
- 17:19looked up at me one side and started out of the place, waits no,
- 17:27well, i'd I'd like to help you. I can you help him?
- 17:34No, no, you can't, No one can. I tried.
- 17:41Who did it? Well? The police say Paul Forbes shot him. It
- 17:45looks that way from all they can gathers forb Yes, they're looking for him.
- 17:52I suppose. Yes, there's something of a policeman. Mister Dollar.
- 17:59Why aren't you out to help in them as something? Please, Miss Streeter,
- 18:00I know we've had work question. You asked me earlier today. Well,
- 18:06you asked me if I loved doctor Shepard. Yes, mister Dollar,
- 18:10I loved him. I loved him more than my whole life. When she
- 18:17said that, and for some reason I don't know, I had a feeling
- 18:21that I was hearing the first bit of unembroidered truth i'd heard in two days.
- 18:25It didn't make me feel any better, but it did clear up something
- 18:26that had been in the back of my mind working its way to the front.
- 18:33Expense account. Ida made six dollars and seventy cents a steak, three
- 18:36martinis, and an order of sliced tomatoes. I finished eating at two thirty
- 18:40in the morning. I really didn't want it, but I did want to
- 18:42sit down and do some thinking. After that, I climbed into my rented
- 18:47car and drove out to doctor Shepherd's office. Building expense account out of nine
- 18:49five dollars even bribe a watch. I shouldn't be doing this, you know,
- 18:56m'd lose my job over it. What's insure from the insurance company?
- 19:00I guess you're all right. I sure appreciate it, too. Bad about
- 19:03doctor Shepherd. Nice fella, yeah, very nice. What is it you
- 19:07think you'll find? Police been here almost an hour ago poking around. Do
- 19:11you know if they found anything? Oh? Sure, doctor's emergency kit.
- 19:15Heard him say he didn't take it with him when he went out in that
- 19:17last emergency. Uh huh, Well, I won't be long. Oh I'm
- 19:21going to come right in and watch you. Shephard had been a thorough man,
- 19:25and from all evidence, he and mis Streeter kept and operated an efficient
- 19:27file system in the office. However, he had kept no medical history of
- 19:32his prime patient, Pauline Forbes. As a matter of fact, in checking
- 19:36over both the patient's files and the card files, there was no evidence to
- 19:38indicate that missus Forbes had ever been a patient of Shepherd's, which seemed strange
- 19:42in view of the fact that he told me he treated her for fourteen months
- 19:45or better and ended the treatment by advising her to divorce her husband. What's
- 19:51more, he had never mentioned that Paul Forbes had been one of his patients,
- 19:53but on entry dated some two years before, disclose the fact that doctor
- 19:56Shepherd had examined, treated, and discharged Paul for Orbs as a patient.
- 20:00These two developments supplied me with all of the curiosity i'd need for a while.
- 20:06Nurse Coran Streeter's home address was duly noted on doctor Shepherd's phone book Oakdale
- 20:10How surprisingly enough, on Oakdale Street Special rates for nurses, Room two oh
- 20:12five. Yes, oh, mister dollar. How do you feel? Not
- 20:25too good, mister dollar. How We got home about fifteen minutes ago.
- 20:27They kept me down there pretty long. Then doctor Shepherd's mother came, do
- 20:33you want to come in? Yeah? Thanks. There isn't much of a
- 20:40place as it. I mean, I haven't street things things like tonight aren't
- 20:47easy, I know, but look in the Streeter. I wish you'd help
- 20:51me and tell me who doctor Shepherd was intending to marry. I was in
- 20:56the office a half an hour ago. He'd already made arrangements for a honeymoon
- 21:00reservations on the Eele de France for next June. Any ideas, please go?
- 21:04I can't look, I'm not here to hurt you. I'm here to
- 21:07help. I mean, was it Missus Forbes? What look, miss Streeter?
- 21:11Things are all wrong about your doctor's death, about what happened before it.
- 21:15It'll all come out sooner or later, I suppose it will. It's
- 21:21awful to say this, mister Dollar. But missus Forbes was the only person
- 21:26doctors saw socially this last year, and she, of course is married.
- 21:30How'd they meet when her husband was doctor Shepherd's patient? Yes, that's right,
- 21:34it became quite friendly. Missus Forbes was never a patient, but mister
- 21:37Fores was. Now what can you tell me about mister Forbes? Oh,
- 21:41you came to see doctor Shepherd a year or two ago and stop coming in.
- 21:45I believe he requested a copy of his medical history to be sent to
- 21:48another doctor in Baltemore. I think it was, but doctor Shepherd kept right
- 21:53on seeing Missus Forbes. Yes, all right. Do you have any idea
- 21:59why I was called in by the insurance broker? At first I didn't,
- 22:03but I don't understand what you're trying to do. The police want, mister
- 22:07Forbes, what does it all mean? It'll sicken you, asterdium. Tell
- 22:12me if you know, tell me please. It means the wrong man was
- 22:18killed tonight. I was pretty sure of what I meant when I said that,
- 22:26and I was also pretty sure that Phil Crosby and the police department had
- 22:29recognized the setup. It so happened. I had a head start in the
- 22:32way of information, and it was six o'clock in the morning by that time.
- 22:34I decided to use it. Mister doll Oh, missus Forbes, I'd
- 22:40like to come in. I should have tumbled to it right away, But
- 22:41your husband fit the part too well. Look here, I've been through quite
- 22:45enough to day with the police and all out looking for Paul and doctor Shepherd
- 22:48being killed. Not looking pained and tired. I'm the guy that's tired.
- 22:51I'm the one who was going to be the star witness when the state tried
- 22:53Shepherd for killing your husband. Why not get a star witness for free?
- 22:56Why not make a suspicious insurance move someone investigated, be called in an investigator
- 23:00who back up a self defense pleae for your doctor, and get him off
- 23:03on justifiable homicide. Get out of here, and you and the doctor sail
- 23:07to France and June and live happily. Ever after, what's the matter would
- 23:11your husband give you a divorce? Do you say it's that way, mister
- 23:15Dollar? And you know everything that it must have been that way, only
- 23:18you got fouled up. Your husband did shoot your boyfriend after all, just
- 23:21as he threatened to. You can't prove any of it, not one but
- 23:26oh you're right about that, missus Forbes. I can't prove anything, not
- 23:27a thing. Shepherd's dead and they want your husband for it, he threatened
- 23:32Shepherd, and they'll get him for it. And that's that. But you
- 23:36have something to live with for the rest of your life. Your doctor is
- 23:38gone, he'll never come back. Or maybe you can just have a cup
- 23:42of coffee and forget all about it. Get out, leave me alone,
- 23:48leave me alone. What Yeah, that's it, Phil, That's what was
- 23:56supposed to happen. Shepherd had it, play it all over town. How
- 24:00Forbes had threatened his life. He had witnesses, he had me even all
- 24:03he had to do was go out and shoot Forbes any place, anytime.
- 24:07But Forbes got him first. Can people get by with this kind of thing
- 24:11in our courts of law? If and when you get your hands on Paul
- 24:15Forbes, will he have any kind of defense? Oh, he'll get him
- 24:17dollar the other I can't answer. But you just told me can't be proven.
- 24:21I don't see how a lawyer can do much for a guy who threatens
- 24:23another man's life and then finally guns him down. You but it was Forbes
- 24:26who was the mark man all this time. He was supposed to die.
- 24:30If it could be proved that Forbes was a patsy, that the doctor intended
- 24:33to gun him down. The judge and jury, Johnny, when we get
- 24:36Forbes, he'll be arranded and died if a first degree murdered. Don't worry
- 24:38about that part. The rest is up to the court, out of our
- 24:41hands. After all, we're pretty sure Forbes shot and killed doctor Shepherd.
- 24:47Hang you're still on the wire, Johnny, Hang it up, your head
- 24:49off. Paul Forbes looked the part of a fugitive. His coat was ripped
- 24:57in several places. The knuckles on his left hand were torn and raw.
- 25:00There was mud on his shoes and pantlegs. His eyes told the rest of
- 25:03the story. He was blazing mad. He had a gun, and he
- 25:07wasn't afraid to use it. Now here's our star to tell you about tomorrow's
- 25:26intriguing episode of this week's story. Tomorrow, I find out how hard it
- 25:30is to kill a lie. Sometimes you have to kill it twice. Join

- 27:56of a who done it? John has his own ideas in terms of the
- 28:04in terms of the wife of the fugitive, but Johnny has been known to
- 28:08be wrong before. We also could suspect the nurse, and I'll even throw
- 28:15this in the insurance guy if the angle was indeed in citing an insurance investigation.
