- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30So today we're talking about design and white space.
- 0:36You might be saying what the heck does this have to do with
- 0:39motivation and feeling good or different ideas and perspective?
- 0:43Well, in design there is a concept of having white space
- 0:49where your eye can rest, where you can see nothing so to speak,
- 0:55where there's just space because it allows something else to jump
- 0:58out. And when you're working with
- 1:00typography and photos and trying to catch people's attention,
- 1:06simplicity is often really, really useful.
- 1:10And years ago, many years ago when I went to design school,
- 1:14this was 1 concept that I had a really hard time learning
- 1:18because I was so into the vibrant colors.
- 1:21I was so into filling everything that I could in A-frame of a
- 1:25picture or a painting with all this wildness.
- 1:29And I'll be honest, it was one of the harder classes that I've
- 1:32ever had to deal with in composition when they were
- 1:36talking about use the use of white space and it really
- 1:40tripped me up. So Fast forward.
- 1:44I had to learn it over and over and over and over.
- 1:47Like many lessons in life, we have to learn them over and over
- 1:50and over and over. And this use of white space
- 1:53really became something in my world that I struggled with
- 1:56because I kept going back to what I knew and what I knew was
- 2:00fine. But it wasn't on trend for where
- 2:03we were headed. It wasn't when we were doing
- 2:05design work in a studio that I used to own, and it was.
- 2:09You had to really pay attention to this piece, so I had to keep
- 2:14changing my perspective over and over and over, and it was
- 2:17annoying, but eventually I got the gist of it.
- 2:21Eventually I started taking simpler pictures.
- 2:25Eventually I started designing in simpler ways with text and
- 2:30with just using white space, and it really became something that
- 2:33I enjoy. And now I think I've probably
- 2:36gone to the other end of the spectrum based around the fact
- 2:40that I studied mindfulness. And mindfulness is all about
- 2:43simplicity and all about, you know, taking that, stripping
- 2:48away the chaos, stripping away everything that doesn't work in
- 2:53the in the equation so that you can get back to a state of
- 2:56simplicity. Part of what I enjoy most of all
- 3:00about what I get to do with you guys is keeping the concept
- 3:03simple, short to the point so that you guys can make them
- 3:07work. And you know, the chickens
- 3:08always make me. They consistently remind me of
- 3:13how things. I just need to be simple.
- 3:15They're simple creatures and they are super smart, contrary
- 3:19to what people think, but they are very simple and when things
- 3:22are done the right way and then done the simple way, they
- 3:25respond and they love it. Right now they are all engaged
- 3:29in digging about pumpkins because this morning they're
- 3:31having a feast of all the pumpkins that were out for
- 3:34decorations and now they're all chunked up and they are just
- 3:37pigging out on them. So that's why it's kind of quiet
- 3:39out here this morning because they've all got pumpkin face.
- 3:42I should take some pictures and put it up so everybody can see
- 3:45it. But anyway, back to this theory
- 3:49of simplicity. So as we are working on this
- 3:52place of simplicity in our in our minds and we are trying to
- 3:56create this white space, if you will, for ourselves in
- 4:00mindfulness, this comes into looking at where those points
- 4:05on. And we've talked about purging
- 4:06before, but we've never purging our stuff.
- 4:09But really I want to talk today about creating simplicity in
- 4:13your mind. What's the simplest way to go
- 4:16from point A to point B? How do you make things so simple
- 4:20for yourself that it doesn't have to create those
- 4:22aggravation? So it's a different perspective
- 4:25of looking at something. Because remember, the more
- 4:28perspectives that you can create, the more likely you are
- 4:31to get a better outcome because you've got different
- 4:33perspectives of doing it. So start to look at how you can
- 4:38create more white space, that simplicity, that clean space,
- 4:44not just in your surroundings but in your head.
- 4:46So for me that will come into simplifying lists, simplifying
- 4:54things that I have to get done instead of having just a bunch
- 4:58of things with like today, a perfect example, I had to do a
- 5:00bunch of errands. So I sat down and I actually
- 5:03mapped out how I wanted to drive the route to keep it as simple
- 5:06as possible. So I didn't feel like I was
- 5:08running around everywhere even though I had to go to multiple
- 5:10stores. That helps, it creates
- 5:13simplicity. One, don't complicate things
- 5:16that you don't need to complicate.
- 5:18Most of the time, we make things way more complicated than they
- 5:22need to be, especially when it comes to dealing with the
- 5:24holidays. So look at How can you make this
- 5:27holiday season simpler for yourself?
- 5:29How can you make it so that you don't feel overwhelmed by it,
- 5:33and keep it clean and tight and easy so you don't feel
- 5:38overwhelmed by it? If that means doing a little bit
- 5:41more shopping online, don't feel bad about it.
- 5:45If it's going to keep you sane, if it means giving fewer gifts,
- 5:48don't feel bad about it. Simply say this is not a time
- 5:52where I think it's going to be good for me to exchange.
- 5:54Be honest with people. If you feel that way and you're
- 5:56lamenting giving gifts, talk about it.
- 6:00Or keep it simple and just do something that people love.
- 6:03Maybe just keep the gifts really, really simple and really
- 6:07inexpensive. Cook for somebody.
- 6:09Do something that means something to them as opposed to
- 6:12spending money on it and putting yourself into debt over it.
- 6:17But in any event, this is all about simplicity and creating
- 6:20white space in your head. So work on that, see where those
- 6:23hang ups are and try to figure out how to get rid of all that
- 6:26clutter. I hope you guys have a very
- 6:28blessed day and I will see you all tomorrow.
- 6:31Bye.
