- 0:46Here's six stories that we're following today.
- 0:49First, Providence Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach, which
- 0:53happens to be a beautiful place,
- 0:55is starting a multiyear planning process to phase
- 0:58out acute care and emergency services.
- 1:01They attributed their decision to the fact that
- 1:03their census has been really low.
- 1:0680% of the hospital's inpatient beds are unused
- 1:08each day, and that the cost to renovate
- 1:11the facility,
- 1:12particularly given the California seismic requirements and more,
- 1:16are are huge,
- 1:18and hospitals built in 1959.
- 1:21This note on the
- 1:23refurbishing renovating the hospital,
- 1:25something that resonates with a lot of hospital
- 1:27leaders, not just in California
- 1:29because so much physical plant was produced sixty,
- 1:32seventy, eighty years ago and needs updating, and
- 1:36updating is very, very expensive.
- 1:39The second story we're we're we're talking about
- 1:41today
- 1:42is the Ascension CEO,
- 1:45Eduardo Conrado, who's who's a brilliant leader,
- 1:48is says that Ascension is taking a closer
- 1:51look at Medicare Advantage plans.
- 1:55Ascension is among the organizations
- 1:57rethinking how and whether
- 1:59to continue to participating
- 2:00in Medicare Advantage
- 2:02plans.
- 2:03Delays in care, high denial rates, and growing
- 2:07administrative
- 2:08burdens are prompting tougher contract
- 2:10discussions
- 2:11and increasingly systems going out of network and
- 2:14not joining Medicare Advantage Plans.
- 2:17Eduardo
- 2:18says that Medicare Advantage Plans,
- 2:21the program has strayed from its original purpose,
- 2:24and it's become a source of friction for
- 2:26health systems and a point of confusion and
- 2:28stress for patients versus what it was originally
- 2:31intended to do. That's another discussion
- 2:34of major health systems having challenges with Medicare
- 2:37Advantage Plans and the payers.
- 2:40Third is a story at Munson Healthcare, Munson
- 2:43Medical Center.
- 2:44President who's been there for a couple years
- 2:46is no longer with the organization.
- 2:49He's leaving effective February 2.
- 2:51The cheer of of the COO of Munson
- 2:54Healthcare said they extend their gratitude to the
- 2:56CEO,
- 2:58but the president is is leaving Munson Medical
- 3:01Center. Munson Healthcare is a great Traverse City
- 3:03institution. For those not familiar, Traverse City, Michigan,
- 3:07beautiful, beautiful place.
- 3:09Fourth,
- 3:10Colorado Hospital CEO resigns. The interim CEO taking
- 3:14over,
- 3:15Liz Sellers resigned to take another job. This
- 3:18was at Pioneers Medical Center in Meeker, Colorado.
- 3:21Fifth,
- 3:23HCA acquires 13 more urgent care centers, six
- 3:26freestanding
- 3:27emergency departments.
- 3:29This is largely in Texas.
- 3:31They already did,
- 3:32acquire a number of them in Florida,
- 3:35and so they continue to increase their footprint
- 3:37in both Florida and in Texas in terms
- 3:40of EDs and urgent cares.
- 3:42Over Christmas break this year, I was treated
- 3:44in the HCA Florida urgent care, that HCA
- 3:46that was an HCA.
- 3:48It was branded as, I think, as m
- 3:50HCA MD now. Actually got great treatment, so
- 3:53very positive, etcetera, result, you know, in terms
- 3:56of my own personal experience.
- 3:58Sixth story we're we're we're talking about today
- 4:01is
- 4:02an interview with an orthopedic
- 4:04surgeon,
- 4:05says the business of medicine tsunami is overwhelming
- 4:07orthopedics.
- 4:09He talks about the increased reach of private
- 4:11equity consolidation.
- 4:12Insurance companies
- 4:14has fundamentally changed the way that orthopedic care
- 4:16is delivered
- 4:17and that and health care in general and
- 4:19how it's being delivered. This is an interview
- 4:21with doctor Lewis Levitt.
- 4:23The authors of these stories today that that
- 4:25I'm talking about from Becker's health care,
