- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter four, Krishna, this teatless yoga, this deep union, I
- 0:07Speaker 1: taught Viswata, the Lord of light, Veiswata to Manu, gave
- 0:12Speaker 1: it he to Ishwaku, so passed it down the line
- 0:18Speaker 1: of all my royal Rishis. Then with years the truth
- 0:22Speaker 1: grew dim and perished. Noble Prince, now once again to thee.
- 0:26Speaker 1: It is declared this ancient lore, this mystery supreme. Seeing
- 0:32Speaker 1: I find thee votary and friend thy birth, Dear Lord,
- 0:37Speaker 1: was in these later days and bright Wiswata's preceded time.
- 0:42Speaker 1: How shall I comprehend this thing? Thou sayst from the
- 0:46Speaker 1: beginning it was I who taught many fold The renewals
- 0:50Speaker 1: of my birth have been urgent, and of thy birds too.
- 0:54Speaker 1: But mine I know, and thine thou knowest not, O
- 0:59Speaker 1: slayer of thy al Bet. I be unborn, undying, indestructible,
- 1:05Speaker 1: the Lord of all things, living not the less. By Maya.
- 1:09Speaker 1: By my magic, which I stamp on floating nature forms
- 1:14Speaker 1: the primal vast, I come and go, and come when
- 1:18Speaker 1: righteousness declines, obareth when wickedness is strong. I rise from
- 1:24Speaker 1: age to age, and take visible shape and move man
- 1:30Speaker 1: with men, succoring the good, thrusting the evil back and
- 1:34Speaker 1: setting virtue on her seat again. Who knows the truth
- 1:38Speaker 1: touching my birds on earth and my divine work. When
- 1:42Speaker 1: he quits, the flesh puts on its loat, no more falls,
- 1:47Speaker 1: no more down to earthly birth to me he comes,
- 1:51Speaker 1: Dear Prince. Many there be who come from fear, set
- 1:56Speaker 1: free from anger, from desire, keep their hearts fixed upon me,
- 2:02Speaker 1: my faithful, purified by sacred flame of knowledge, Such as
- 2:07Speaker 1: these mix with my being. Whoso worship me them I exalt.
- 2:13Speaker 1: But all men everywhere shall fall into my path abed.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Those souls which seek reward for works, make sacrifice now
- 2:22Speaker 1: to the lower gods, I say to thee, here have
- 2:27Speaker 1: they their reward? But I am He made the forecasts
- 2:33Speaker 1: and portioned them a place after their qualities and gifts. Hee,
- 2:38Speaker 1: I created the reportsful, I that live immortally, made all
- 2:43Speaker 1: those mortal birds for works soil, not my essence, being
- 2:48Speaker 1: works wrought uninvolved, who knows me? Acting thus unchained by action,
- 2:55Speaker 1: action binds not him, and so perceiving. All those saints
- 2:59Speaker 1: of old worked seeking for deliverance, worked thou as in
- 3:04Speaker 1: the days gone by thy father's did thou sayest perplexed.
- 3:10Speaker 1: It had been asked before by singers and by sages,
- 3:14Speaker 1: what is act and what is in action? I will
- 3:18Speaker 1: teach thee this, and now, knowing thou shalt learn, which
- 3:23Speaker 1: work doth save needs? Must one rightly meditate those three doing,
- 3:30Speaker 1: not doing, and undoing. Here thorny and dark. The path
- 3:36Speaker 1: is he who sees how action may be rest rest action.
- 3:41Speaker 1: He is wisest mid his kind. He had the truth.
- 3:45Speaker 1: He doth well, acting or resting, freed in all his
- 3:50Speaker 1: works from prickings of desire, burned clean in act by
- 3:54Speaker 1: the white fire of truth. The wise call that why
- 3:58Speaker 1: that man wise, and such a one, renouncing fruit of deeds,
- 4:04Speaker 1: always content, always self satisfying, if he works that nothing
- 4:09Speaker 1: that shall stain his separate soul, which quit a fear
- 4:13Speaker 1: in hope, subduing self, rejecting outward, impulse, yielding up to body.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Bodies need nothing save body dwells sinless, amid all sin,
- 4:25Speaker 1: with equal calm, taking what may befall by grief, unmoved,
- 4:31Speaker 1: unmoved by joy, unenvyingly the same in good and evil fortunes,
- 4:37Speaker 1: no wise bound by bond of deeds, Nay, but of
- 4:42Speaker 1: such a one whose crave is gone, whose soul is liberate,
- 4:47Speaker 1: whose heart is set on truth. And of such a
- 4:50Speaker 1: one whose work he does is work of sacrifice, which
- 4:55Speaker 1: pass it purely into ash and smoke, consumed upon altar.
- 5:00Speaker 1: All's then God. The sacrifice is brumma. The ghee and
- 5:04Speaker 1: grain are brama. The fire is brumma, and the flesh
- 5:09Speaker 1: it eats is Brumma. And on to Brumma attain he
- 5:13Speaker 1: who in such office meditates on Brumma. Some votaries there
- 5:18Speaker 1: be who serve the gods with flesh and altar smoke.
- 5:22Speaker 1: But other some who, lighting subtler fires, make purer rite
- 5:27Speaker 1: with will of worship of the which be. They who,
- 5:30Speaker 1: in white flame of countenance consume joys of the sense,
- 5:35Speaker 1: delights of ear and eye, foregoing tender speech and sound
- 5:39Speaker 1: of song. And they who, kindling fires with torch of truth,
- 5:44Speaker 1: burn on a hidden altar stone the bliss of youth
- 5:48Speaker 1: and love, renouncing happiness. And they who lay for offering
- 5:52Speaker 1: their their wealth, their penance, meditation, piety, their steadfast reading
- 5:58Speaker 1: of the scrolls, their lower painfully gained with long austerities.
- 6:04Speaker 1: And they who, making silent sacrifice, draw in their breath
- 6:08Speaker 1: to feed the flame of thought, and breathe it forth
- 6:11Speaker 1: to waft the heart on high, governing the vintage of
- 6:16Speaker 1: each entering air, lest one sigh pass which hath helped
- 6:21Speaker 1: not the soul. And they who, day by day, denying needs,
- 6:26Speaker 1: lay life itself upon the altar flame burning the body
- 6:30Speaker 1: van lo. All these keep the right of offering, as
- 6:35Speaker 1: if they slew victims, and all thereby efface mut sin Ye,
- 6:40Speaker 1: and who feed on the immortal fool left of such
- 6:44Speaker 1: sacrifice to Brumma, pass to the unending. But for him
- 6:49Speaker 1: that makes no sacrifice, he hath nor part nor lot,
- 6:53Speaker 1: even in the present world. How should he share another, O, Thou,
- 6:58Speaker 1: glory of thy line in sight of Brahma. All these
- 7:02Speaker 1: offerings are spread and are accepted, comprehend that all proceed
- 7:07Speaker 1: by act. For knowing this, thou shalt be quit of doubt.
- 7:12Speaker 1: The sacrifice which knowledge pays is better than great sacrifice
- 7:18Speaker 1: or great gifts offered by wealth. Since gifts worth, O,
- 7:22Speaker 1: my Prince, lies in the mind which gives the will
- 7:26Speaker 1: that serves. And these are gained by reverence, by strong search,
- 7:30Speaker 1: by humble heed of those who see the truth and
- 7:33Speaker 1: teach it. Knowing truth, thy heart no more will ache
- 7:38Speaker 1: with error, for the truth shall show all things subdued
- 7:42Speaker 1: to THEE, and thou to me moreover, son of Pandu
- 7:47Speaker 1: wert thou worst of all wrong doers. This fairship of
- 7:51Speaker 1: truth should bear thee safe and dry across the sea
- 7:54Speaker 1: of thy transgressions. As the kindled flame of feeds on
- 7:58Speaker 1: the fuel till it sinks to ash so on to
- 8:03Speaker 1: ash urjda on to nought, the flame of knowledge wastes works,
- 8:09Speaker 1: draws away. There is no purer like there too in
- 8:14Speaker 1: all this world. And he who seeks it shall find it,
- 8:17Speaker 1: being grown perfect in himself, believing he receives it when
- 8:21Speaker 1: the soul masters itself and cleaves to truth, and comes
- 8:26Speaker 1: possessing knowledge to the higher peace the utmost reports. But
- 8:32Speaker 1: those untaught, and those without full faith, and those who
- 8:36Speaker 1: fear are shent. No peace is here or otherwhere, no
- 8:41Speaker 1: hope nor happiness. For whoso doubts he that, being self contained,
- 8:47Speaker 1: hath vanquished doubt, disparting self from service, soul from works,
- 8:53Speaker 1: enlightened and emancipate my prince, works fetter him no more.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Cut a twin with sword of wisdom, son of Bareth.
- 9:04Speaker 1: This doubt that binds thy heart beats, cleave the bond
- 9:08Speaker 1: born of thy ignorance. Be bold and wise give thyself
- 9:13Speaker 1: to the field, with me arise. End of chapter four
