- 0:47Speaker 1: Welcome to today's edition of Reflection on the Word with
- 0:50Speaker 1: Richard K. I'm Chuck Christie, and today we are asking
- 0:54Speaker 1: you to spend a few moments of your time with
- 0:56Speaker 1: us each day as Richard shares from God's work with notes, quotes,
- 0:59Speaker 1: and story along with some of his own personal experiences,
- 1:02Speaker 1: to confirm for you God's great love for us, that
- 1:05Speaker 1: his compassion for us never fails, and that He has
- 1:08Speaker 1: a great faithfulness toward us in every regard. Now, if
- 1:11Speaker 1: you miss a portion of today's broadcast or would like
- 1:13Speaker 1: to recommend it to a friend, you can hear this
- 1:16Speaker 1: program anytime online at Talknetwork Radio dot com. Well, now
- 1:21Speaker 1: here's Richard with today's reflection.
- 1:24Speaker 2: When I came to you brothers, announcing the testimony of
- 1:28Speaker 2: God to you, I did not come with brilliance of
- 1:31Speaker 2: speech or wisdom, for I determined to know nothing among
- 1:35Speaker 2: you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was
- 1:40Speaker 2: with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling.
- 1:44Speaker 2: My speech and my proclamation were not with persuasive words
- 1:49Speaker 2: of wisdom, but with the demonstration of the spirit and power,
- 1:55Speaker 2: so that your faith might not be based on men's wisdom.
- 2:00Speaker 2: On God's power First Corinthians, Chapter two and verses one
- 2:07Speaker 2: through five. I want to begin this portion of the
- 2:14Speaker 2: explanation of the demonstration of the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 2:22Speaker 2: We have discussed the manifestations of the Holy Spirit, and
- 2:27Speaker 2: we have seen many examples throughout the scripture in the
- 2:33Speaker 2: Book of Acts, where we see the manifestations as they
- 2:39Speaker 2: take place, and the result being not only the salvation
- 2:45Speaker 2: of many of those who have heard the Gospel message,
- 2:49Speaker 2: but many were delivered and many were healed. The power
- 2:54Speaker 2: of God was manifested and demonstrated that changed their life. Now,
- 3:03Speaker 2: I want you to understand two things. Preaching is necessary.
- 3:10Speaker 2: We must hear the word of God to be able
- 3:14Speaker 2: to comprehend our need for salvation for savior. We must
- 3:21Speaker 2: understand that we're sinners, and we must understand that because
- 3:25Speaker 2: of this sin, God cannot allow us to enjoy an
- 3:30Speaker 2: eternal relationship with Him, and so we can't work our
- 3:35Speaker 2: way into a goodness with God. God provides his own
- 3:40Speaker 2: son in order that we have a payment for our
- 3:46Speaker 2: own sins, and not for just our sins, but for
- 3:50Speaker 2: the sins of all mankind. You see, men, women, children
- 3:57Speaker 2: are born into this world as sinners. It's hard to admit,
- 4:03Speaker 2: but it is a fact. And so, since we are
- 4:08Speaker 2: all sinners, we must have a means of becoming righteous,
- 4:15Speaker 2: and we can't become righteous in our own good works.
- 4:20Speaker 2: We become righteous because of the righteousness of God in
- 4:27Speaker 2: Jesus Christ, imparted to us through his payment for the
- 4:34Speaker 2: sin of mankind. If we believe that in our heart
- 4:39Speaker 2: and confess it with our mouth, the scripture says, we
- 4:44Speaker 2: will be saved. The immediate result of this event in
- 4:52Speaker 2: our life is that our desires begin to change, our
- 4:58Speaker 2: focus change. We become more and more like Jesus and
- 5:06Speaker 2: less and less like the old person we were before
- 5:12Speaker 2: we accepted him as savior and hopefully as Lord. And
- 5:19Speaker 2: so we come to this passage that we read moments
- 5:25Speaker 2: ago from the first chapter or second chapter of First
- 5:32Speaker 2: Corinthians Paul's letter to the church at Karnth, where he
- 5:37Speaker 2: explains that when he came to them, he announced only
- 5:43Speaker 2: the testimony of God to them. He proclaimed the work
- 5:49Speaker 2: of Jesus Christ and what his crucifixion meant. That's when
- 5:53Speaker 2: he said, I came to you knowing nothing among you
- 5:58Speaker 2: except the message of the gospel that Jesus Christ was
- 6:02Speaker 2: a messiah, and that because of his sacrifice, him being crucified,
- 6:10Speaker 2: your payment for sin has been made, and by doing
- 6:15Speaker 2: that they could receive the Gospel. But it is important
- 6:21Speaker 2: to understand that Paul makes a very strong illustration where
- 6:28Speaker 2: he says in the fourth verse, my speech and proclamation
- 6:33Speaker 2: were not with persuasive words of wisdom, but with a
- 6:39Speaker 2: demonstration of the spirit and power, so that your faith
- 6:46Speaker 2: might not be based on men's wisdom but on God's power.
- 6:52Speaker 2: You see, today there is much preaching, and there is
- 6:59Speaker 2: much teaching about the Bible, much teaching about the Gospel,
- 7:07Speaker 2: and much teaching about the life that we should live
- 7:13Speaker 2: as Christians. And yet we hear in the Gospel accounts
- 7:21Speaker 2: a crying message of changing us. How does it happen? Well?
- 7:30Speaker 2: In the first example, we have all heard, and it
- 7:36Speaker 2: has been actually described as the Lord's prayer. In effect,
- 7:43Speaker 2: it is the model prayer, if you will. It's the
- 7:47Speaker 2: outline of the way that we should pray. Because his
- 7:53Speaker 2: disciples came to him, they had watched him. They saw
- 7:59Speaker 2: the miracles that he performed, They saw the wondrous ways
- 8:05Speaker 2: that he approached sinners and how he received them. They
- 8:11Speaker 2: saw him show compassion to those who are not even
- 8:16Speaker 2: of the Jewish persuasion. We are all witnesses of this.
- 8:24Speaker 2: And yet what they asked him, as we find in
- 8:28Speaker 2: Luke the eleventh chapter, beginning with the very first verse,
- 8:33Speaker 2: he said that he, this is Jesus, was praying in
- 8:38Speaker 2: a certain place, and when he finished, one of his
- 8:42Speaker 2: disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray just
- 8:49Speaker 2: as John also taught his disciples. And he said to them,
- 8:54Speaker 2: whenever you pray, say, And then he used the model
- 9:00Speaker 2: or the outline of the prayer. He prayed, Father, your
- 9:05Speaker 2: name be honored as holy your kingdom. Come give us
- 9:09Speaker 2: each day are daily bread, and forgive us of our sins,
- 9:14Speaker 2: for we ourselves also forgive everyone in debt to us,
- 9:19Speaker 2: and do not bring us into temptation. Now Jesus stopped
- 9:26Speaker 2: at this portion, which actually showed this was a model
- 9:33Speaker 2: rather than the way that he was praying. You see,
- 9:39Speaker 2: they didn't ask him to teach them great words of prayer.
- 9:46Speaker 2: They asked him to teach them how to pray in
- 9:51Speaker 2: the Father's will. That was what he was demonstrating. And
- 9:58Speaker 2: so as the scripture continues in the book of Luke
- 10:02Speaker 2: the eleventh chapter, beginning in the fifth verse, he says
- 10:07Speaker 2: to them. He also said to them, suppose one of
- 10:12Speaker 2: you has a friend and goes to him at midnight
- 10:17Speaker 2: and says to him, friend, lend me three loaves of bread.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Because a friend of mine on a journey has come
- 10:24Speaker 2: to me and I don't have anything to offer him.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Then he will answer from inside and say, don't bother me.
- 10:32Speaker 2: The door is already locked, and my children and I
- 10:35Speaker 2: have gone to bed. I can't get up to give
- 10:38Speaker 2: you anything. I tell you, even though he won't get
- 10:43Speaker 2: up and give him anything because he is his friend.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Yet because of his friend's persistence, he will get up
- 10:52Speaker 2: and give him as much as he needs. So I
- 10:57Speaker 2: say to you, keep asking and it will be given
- 11:01Speaker 2: to you. Keep searching and you will find. Keep knocking,
- 11:06Speaker 2: and the door will be open to you. For everyone
- 11:10Speaker 2: who asks receives, and the one who searches finds, and
- 11:16Speaker 2: to the one who knocks, the door will be open.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Listen to this illustration. What father among you, if his
- 11:27Speaker 2: son asks for a fish, will give him a snake
- 11:31Speaker 2: instead of a fish, Or if he asks for an egg,
- 11:35Speaker 2: will give him a scorpion. If you, then, who are evil,
- 11:42Speaker 2: know how to give good gifts to your children. How
- 11:47Speaker 2: much more will the Heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit
- 11:54Speaker 2: to those who ask him?
- 11:58Speaker 1: Richard will be right back in a moment wrap up.
- 12:00Speaker 1: But if you've just joined us, you've been listening to
- 12:02Speaker 1: Reflections on the Word with Richard k. You can hear

- 12:38Speaker 1: and printed by Discovery House Publishers. Again, here is Richard
- 12:42Speaker 1: to wrap up today's message.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Asking for the Holy Spirit is part of the model
- 12:52Speaker 2: of Jesus teaching the disciples how to persist in prayer. See,
- 13:01Speaker 2: we may try in many ways to do great things
- 13:07Speaker 2: because of our teaching, but without the power of the
- 13:12Speaker 2: Holy Spirit, two things will result. One, we will not
- 13:19Speaker 2: be successful in most cases in being able to bring
- 13:24Speaker 2: someone to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus. And two,
- 13:31Speaker 2: there will be many of those who remain possessed of
- 13:35Speaker 2: the devil and afflicted or sick because we tried to
- 13:43Speaker 2: teach them, rather than allow the Holy Spirit to demonstrate
- 13:49Speaker 2: and manifest his power through us. Jesus said, keep asking,
- 13:57Speaker 2: keep searching, keep knocking. In other words, he is saying,
- 14:02Speaker 2: be persistent in your seeking of the fullness of God
- 14:10Speaker 2: in your life. Don't just give up because you've asked
- 14:17Speaker 2: and you think, well, I took care of that. Now
- 14:21Speaker 2: I can go on and live my life. No believer,
- 14:26Speaker 2: you must be empowered by the Holy Spirit. If a
- 14:33Speaker 2: father among you will ask his son, or ask his
- 14:40Speaker 2: son will actually ask for a fish, who will give
- 14:46Speaker 2: him the fish? Or will he give him a snake
- 14:51Speaker 2: instead of the fish? Of course not. And if the
- 14:55Speaker 2: son were to ask for an egg, But yet the
- 14:59Speaker 2: father does dikui's the egg as a scorpion that would
- 15:04Speaker 2: harm him? How much would that father love his son?
- 15:10Speaker 2: So then it says, if you then, who are evil,
- 15:15Speaker 2: Now Jesus is saying this in answer to their request,
- 15:20Speaker 2: teach us how to pray. If you who are evil
- 15:27Speaker 2: can understand that you would give good gifts to your children.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Now you notice what he said, good gifts to your children.
- 15:37Speaker 2: How much more will the Heavenly Father give the Holy
- 15:42Speaker 2: Spirit to those who ask him? You see, we must ask.
- 15:49Speaker 2: But as we ask and believe, the Holy Spirit will
- 15:55Speaker 2: be given. Are you asking? Are you waiting? Are you're receiving?
- 16:01Speaker 2: And that is today's reflection on the Word.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Thank you, Richard. Join us again tomorrow when we continue
- 16:09Speaker 1: with the next edition of Reflections on the Word with
- 16:12Speaker 1: Richard k or Richard Hire Team. This is Chuck Christie
- 16:16Speaker 1: saying thanks for listening to this edition of Reflections on
- 16:19Speaker 1: the Word.
