- 0:20Favorite happy places her chicken coop, along with all her
- 0:23chickens. Hey everybody, good morning.
- 0:30Learning from the chicken coop. So today I have story to tell
- 0:34you and it doesn't start off very happy.
- 0:37We lost one of our girls yesterday, our little one of our
- 0:40little leghorns to what we believe was either a towel, or a
- 0:46raccoon, and there's always a risk of this when you free
- 0:50range, your chickens. And we understand that and we go
- 0:54into it with the attitude of, you know we want them to have
- 0:58their best chicken lives that they can have.
- 1:00And sometimes that comes with a higher level of risk, especially
- 1:04when you live in the country and you know, that there are other
- 1:08things that can take them out, we have our whole entire Farm
- 1:14fenced in so that there's no risk of, we minimize the risk of
- 1:20certain bigger Predators getting in, but anything is possible and
- 1:25airstrikes are always possible, and raccoons are just devils.
- 1:30It's because of how equipped they are to climb and do
- 1:34whatever. So this happened at dusk
- 1:38yesterday and that is definitely one of the danger zones.
- 1:42And I have to say, I wasn't sure I was going to talk about this
- 1:47because I've been in tears about it since yesterday and absolute
- 1:52wreck. I chose not to be outside at
- 1:57that time which I typically try to do.
- 2:00I can round everybody up from the corners of the property.
- 2:06Sometimes the rooster misses them and didn't get everybody.
- 2:10And she was off on the edge of the flower garden and she just
- 2:14got picked off. And I chose to stay inside and
- 2:18watch a movie because I was exhausted from not sleeping the
- 2:21night before. So, obviously, my brain went to
- 2:24the place of having massive sadness, and massive guilt, and
- 2:29all of this because I Felt like if I had just been up, I would
- 2:32have seen it. I would have, you know, changed
- 2:35it and all that's possible and at the same time that's not what
- 2:39happened. So when I was trying to decide
- 2:42if I want to talk about it or not I said you know this is
- 2:45actually something which is a great lesson for me to bring up
- 2:47and talk to everybody about because I could be sitting here.
- 2:51And while some people may think that this is silly, it's a
- 2:54chicken. Why is she having this visceral
- 2:56reaction to it? It's because these are like my
- 2:59family. Is she was one of my originals I
- 3:03raised her from the time. She was two days old and it's
- 3:08just they're my they're my family.
- 3:11So regardless of your opinion of chickens, there's a lesson in
- 3:15this. And the biggest one for me is I
- 3:18could sit here and I could keep going on and on about what I
- 3:22could have done, or how sad it is that I chose to do something
- 3:27and I missed it. I could have saved her.
- 3:30I Shoulda Coulda Woulda, but I tried to teach you guys all the
- 3:34time, the reality of living in the moment and recognizing that
- 3:40we are where we are. And it doesn't matter how we got
- 3:42some where it matters that we're there, and it matters that we
- 3:47are in this position of reframing it.
- 3:50So, in my reframe of this, I made the decision to say, you
- 3:54know, again I have worked really hard to give them the best
- 3:59chicken life, they Possibly can have letting them be chickens
- 4:04that run around free and having the best time that they can have
- 4:08digging in the dirt digging in gardens looking for bugs, doing
- 4:12all the things that they do. Oh so well and not allowing
- 4:17myself to get into this headspace of having to put them
- 4:20in a box so that I can control how long I have them.
- 4:25But their quality of life goes down.
- 4:28And I have to keep remembering that I Have to keep remembering
- 4:32that there is a part of me that while I did an outstanding job
- 4:40and I still feel like I did an outstanding job with keeping
- 4:44them as safe as I could. There's always a risk and
- 4:47there's always a part of me that wonders how I can minimize the
- 4:49risk. How can I do better?
- 4:51Because that's part of being human, but I can't let that
- 4:54become the reality that I focus on, so that I'm staying in a
- 4:57state of sadness. I also have to remember, That
- 5:01you know, mother nature always rules and there's nothing I can
- 5:04do about that. I can't change the nature of a
- 5:07raccoon or I can't change the nature of an owl.
- 5:11Just like we can't change the nature of people that were
- 5:14surrounded by, unless they want to change.
- 5:17We can't change the nature of other situations and problems
- 5:21unless they want to change. But Mother Nature, man, she just
- 5:24she does her own thing and we just have to learn to live with
- 5:27it and just like death in general.
- 5:30We're never going to get out of it and the point of this is that
- 5:35it just makes me want to do an even better job today.
- 5:39When I wake up and say okay how can I let them have even a
- 5:43better quality? How can I give them even more
- 5:46fun to have? What else can I do?
- 5:48So in the event that they do have to have one of those
- 5:53incidents happen to them that I know for sure that I've really
- 5:57done and given them the best opportunity.
- 6:00Ready to be the best chickens that they can be really like,
- 6:03think about it. The best chickens that they can
- 6:05be but then the lesson comes back to us being the best us
- 6:08that we can be being showing up and being living our life to the
- 6:13fullest showing up and not playing small showing up and
- 6:16doing the things that make us uncomfortable.
- 6:18So that we just can grow from it.
- 6:21Exponentially doing the things that make us feel alive and
- 6:26vibrant and, and not living in the mundane.
- 6:29Because living in that mundane, Gets old quickly and that's why
- 6:32we get stuck. That's why we stay the place.
- 6:35We stay because we can't get out of the mundane.
- 6:38We go through the motions of the everyday.
- 6:41So a lot to think about and a lot to wake up and be grateful
- 6:46for I still have 40 chickens, I still have one rooster and 39
- 6:53girls that are absolutely healthy and happy this morning
- 6:56and having their breakfast and enjoying Yourselves and being
- 7:01bossy to each other and eating and having a great time, and I
- 7:06still have a beautiful farm and I still have a beautiful family.
- 7:10And even though I'm sad for the loss and I will be sad for the
- 7:13loss for a while. It's not going to stop me from
- 7:18making sure that they have the absolute best situation that
- 7:22they can have. And I'm going to continue to
- 7:24spoil them rotten. And I'm going to continue to
- 7:27remember that. Life is precious whether it's
- 7:30the life. If of a chicken or if it's the
- 7:32life of a human or if it's the life of something else, life of
- 7:36all kinds is precious. So I'm going to go out there and
- 7:40I'm going to enjoy the hell out of it while I have the ability
- 7:43to do that. So I hope you find your joy
- 7:47today. I hope, you know, how much I
- 7:49enjoy doing this all for you, and I hope you guys have a very
- 7:52blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 7:54Bye.
