- 0:00We're back with Dan Hurley on the UKON Men's Basketball Coaches Show, Mike Crispino
- 0:03here Steph Castle. Eleven time Freshmen of the Week in the Big East,
- 0:08breaking Carmelo Anthony's record, which is pretty impressive in and of itself. Danny
- 0:13went six for twelve against Providence, nine of twelve against the Hall. He
- 0:19had a few games before that we wasn't scoring a lot. But he does
- 0:22so many things for a young guy. How much has he grown do you
- 0:27think in these last couple of months. Obviously had the injury early, kind
- 0:31of feeling his way in college basketball, but he looks like a more and
- 0:35more mature player almost game to game now. Yeah, And he's so young,
- 0:40and it's tough, man. It's tough tough on young players, tough
- 0:46on freshman college basketball with the portal and COVID, and it's not easy.
- 0:53So what he's doing is, you know, it's incredible. And I think
- 0:57it's like he's being asked to to play all around winning basketball. Like when
- 1:03we need you to shoot, score, when we need you to, you
- 1:07know, get in the lane and create for others. We need you on
- 1:10the backboard, he's guarding a nightly basis, the other team's best player on
- 1:14the perimeter and being asked to shut that individual down or at least make them
- 1:19incredibly inefficient. So uh and and and we're asking to do that while you're
- 1:25like a critical member of a team that's going for you know, nothing but
- 1:29championships. So you know, he and he and he's done it. And
- 1:34he's done it through injury and missing time in the non conference. So you
- 1:38know, it all starts at home, Mike. You know, he's got
- 1:42he's got two great parents and uh, they keep him grounded, and they
- 1:46let us coach him and they support us fully. And he was you know,
- 1:52him and him and Camre we're missing pieces. Yeah, obviously you felt
- 1:56like you could handle the load of all these things as a young guy.
- 2:00So that's that speaks to his maturity and his intelligence and his competitiveness. He's
- 2:05getting better on the postgame shows, by the way. He's very conversational.
- 2:08He's got a great smile. I mean, I know it's only radio,
- 2:12but I'm pretty impressed with him just overall being able to open up and kind
- 2:16of communicate what just happened in a game. I Mean, not every guy
- 2:20can do that. Not every player can come off the you know, the
- 2:23court and start talking to us and say, well, here's what just happened.
- 2:27That's not easy. He's a nice guy. You know, he's a
- 2:30he's a sweet kid. You know, he's not a you know, entitled,
- 2:37you know, ego maniac because he's got a lot of adults you know,
- 2:42just kiss but you know, so he you know, he he's got
- 2:46a huge, uh you know name in basketball, but he's humble and you
- 2:52know, he's he's a good kid. He's a he's a fun kid to
- 2:54be around. He's one of the guys. All his teammates love him.
- 3:00Everyone that meets him, whether it's a flight attendant or or trainer or whatever
- 3:07it is. It's like, you know, everyone loves the guy. Yeah,
- 3:10you know what, I know. It's great about people like him and
- 3:14guys like you. It's just a genuineness about it, you know what I
- 3:16mean. There's not a pretense. There's not a hey, look at us,
- 3:20look what we're doing. I mean, it's I think that's the beauty
- 3:23of this team and this coaching staff. I mean, you could be walking
- 3:28around bragging about this and that. I mean a lot of things have been
- 3:30accomplished, but there's some humbleness to this group, which I think that is
- 3:36fabulous. Yeah, that the uh, you know, you hope to uh
- 3:40just attract that with your with with the staff and then with the way that
- 3:45you recruit people. I think the messaging with the you know, when we
- 3:51do recruit players is uh, yeah, we're gonna help you you maximize your
- 3:55value as a player and your development as a young man. But you know,
- 4:00we're also going to get you into an environment where people are going to
- 4:04be competitive and push each other to be better, but we're also going to
- 4:10support each other and be totally about team and about winning and yeah, I
- 4:16mean, we're going to give you your best chance to get to the NBA,
- 4:21but we're not going to do that at the behest of us being able
- 4:24to win games as a program here at Yukon. Yeah, it's such a
- 4:29valuable quality to have I think in the in the you know, the conversations
- 4:33between coaches and players and recruits and all that so important. Donovan Clinging,
- 4:39Yeah, nineteen and eleven against the Hall. He just plays so well.
- 4:43He's a backbone. In fact, Castle mentioned him in the post games.
- 4:46I asked him about it. What's it like having clinging back there to back
- 4:49you up when something goes wrong, like your guy gets by you and goes
- 4:53down the lane. And he said, Wow, it means everything. I
- 4:56mean, a guy like him can clean up a lot of mistakes and he's
- 5:00certainly been doing that. Well. Mean, Donovan is uh, you know,
- 5:05is the m v P. I mean he's like or am I the
- 5:10most impactful player in college basketball? Or one of a couple of guys that
- 5:17just impact the game in a way that no other players can. You know,
- 5:23the shots he creates on offense with his presence, defense that that he
- 5:29the defense that he creates for us at that end of the court, the
- 5:32extra possessions because of the rebounding, his just size and his agility, and
- 5:40and what he does for his team in terms of elevating everyone's play, you
- 5:44know, honorable mention. Obviously who's hurt. So it's it's hard to gauge
- 5:49what the coach has voted on, and you know how they have decided to
- 5:55put players in terms of the votes where they petty you know with a was
- 6:00there a level of envy? Uh? You know, who knows. But
- 6:05the league must be filled with big time NBA players. If Donovan ended up
- 6:13honorable mention, Yeah, I was aso mind, I was going to follow
- 6:15it up what you're saying with if he hadn't been injured, if he had
- 6:20been you know, playing thirty minutes a game, which I think you thought
- 6:24he might do this year. He's playing less than that, but he's very
- 6:27impactful. As you say, if he had done those things, would he
- 6:30be certainly a first teamer in this league? Yeah, I mean, listen,
- 6:33we the regular season, which is which is over the course of months
- 6:40and in and it's not an unbalanced schedule. Year we play, we played.
- 6:45We played twenty games versus ten teams. Uh. You know, we
- 6:48ran through the league this year and won by a historic margin. We we
- 6:53should have gotten every everyone should have gotten the awards they deserved, you know,
- 6:59whether Players of the Year, you know, the All Conference teams.
- 7:03You know this this team when you win the game, when you win the
- 7:06league by as many games as we did. Uh, are our big four
- 7:12guys and and and staph Obviously they deserve all the awards. Yeah. I
- 7:16agreed one hundred percent. All right, back with Dan Hurley to wrap up
- 7:19another segment with the coach, we got to talk DR we got to talk
- 7:23caravan, we got to talk Big East New York MSG, all that and
