Latest / DEWA Podcasts / HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer highlights AI as a key enabler of energy sector transformation at the World Governments Summit 2026
Transcript
- 0:00You know, with this whole global push for a greener
- 0:02planet, we're facing this fascinating paradox.
- 0:06The very technology we're relying on for solutions,
- 0:10I mean, artificial intelligence, is creating
- 0:12this unprecedented demand for energy itself.
- 0:16Yeah, it's a huge challenge. Right? But it's
- 0:19one being tackled head on in Dubai. They're framing
- 0:22AI not as the problem, but as like the fundamental
- 0:26pillar for a sustainable, intelligent energy
- 0:29future. Ah, precisely. And that was the central
- 0:32theme in this really powerful speech at the World
- 0:35Government Summit by His Excellency Saeed Mohammed
- 0:38Al -Tayr. OK. He's the MD and CEO of the Dubai
- 0:42Electricity and Water Authority, or DIWA. So
- 0:45in his speech, it was titled AI -Driven Energy
- 0:48Transformation, and he really set the stage for
- 0:51this new era. Yeah, what was it? He said, the
- 0:54energy transition is not an end in itself, but
- 0:57a key driver of sustainable economic growth.
- 1:01Interesting. He made it so clear that this is
- 1:04about building a prosperous future, not just,
- 1:06you know, switching our power sources. And he
- 1:08directly linked that growth to technology, didn't
- 1:11he? He was stating that a comprehensive transition
- 1:14of the energy sector cannot be achieved without
- 1:17harnessing fourth industrial revolution technologies,
- 1:20especially AI, which is experiencing unprecedented
- 1:24global growth. And that growth is just explosive.
- 1:27His speech highlighted the numbers. Oh, yeah.
- 1:30What were they? The global data center electricity
- 1:33use is expected to be nearly five times higher
- 1:36in 2035 than it is today. Wow, that's a massive
- 1:41energy footprint. So, okay, how do you possibly
- 1:44power that AI revolution sustainably then? Well,
- 1:47His Excellency attributed the whole strategy
- 1:50to a unified national vision. He noted, Guided
- 1:54by the vision and directives of the wise leadership
- 1:56of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al
- 1:59-Nayan, president of the UAE, and His Highness
- 2:02Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al -Maktoum, vice
- 2:05president and prime minister of the UAE and ruler
- 2:08of Dubai, the UAE continues to consolidate its
- 2:11position as a global hub for sustainability and
- 2:14artificial intelligence. And this isn't just
- 2:17theory. I mean, at Diwa, AI is already part of
- 2:21their corporate DNA. Really? Yeah, their AI virtual
- 2:24employee, Ramas, has handled over 12 million
- 2:27customer inquiries without any human intervention.
- 2:31That's a practical, real -world application.
- 2:34That's a fantastic example. And then on an industrial
- 2:37scale, you have the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum
- 2:40Solar Park. The speech explained how AI is improving
- 2:44efficiency and productivity by optimizing photovoltaic
- 2:48panel cleaning cycles, forecasting power generation,
- 2:51and enhancing the integration of energy storage
- 2:53systems with the grid. So it's about making clean
- 2:56energy smarter. But what's truly futuristic is
- 3:00this virtual engineer they're developing. A virtual
- 3:03engineer? Yes, it was described as an advanced
- 3:07intelligent system that continuously learns from
- 3:10operational data and functions like a seasoned
- 3:13expert, providing predictive failure alerts,
- 3:16root cause analysis, autonomous efficiency calculation,
- 3:19plant optimization recommendations, and real
- 3:22-time scenario simulation. So you go from a virtual
- 3:26employee answering calls to a virtual engineer
- 3:30that autonomously optimizes an entire power plant.
- 3:33That's a complete reimagining of what a utility
- 3:36can even be. Exactly. And the end of the speech
- 3:39just summed it all up perfectly. His Excellency
- 3:42concluded, the future of utilities is intelligent.
- 3:46Diwa remains firmly committed to leading this
- 3:48future, reinforcing Dubai's global leadership
- 3:51and advancing a model in which innovation drives
- 3:54sustainability, ensuring that the UAE continues
- 3:58to inspire the world. What a powerful vision.
- 4:01That more intelligence doesn't have to mean an
- 4:04unsustainable energy cost. So here's a question
- 4:07for everyone listening. As AI becomes more and
- 4:10more integrated into our critical infrastructure,
- 4:13like power and water, How do we make sure these
- 4:16complex, autonomous systems stay secure, transparent,
- 4:20and aligned with our human values?
