- 0:01Speaker 1: What is going on.
- 0:02Speaker 2: This is Jakehoefer and welcome back to another week of Roughfresh.
- 0:05Speaker 2: As we all could guess with this most recent cold
- 0:08Speaker 2: front in October, we have three different big Buck stories
- 0:12Speaker 2: here on how they got it done and how they
- 0:14Speaker 2: were able to capitalize on this most recent cold front.
- 0:17Speaker 2: We have folks from Missouri, Kentucky, Iowa, and a update
- 0:21Speaker 2: in Illinois. This is some good intel for the next
- 0:25Speaker 2: cold front on how they were able to make a
- 0:27Speaker 2: process that came together. Looks like temperatures are going to
- 0:30Speaker 2: be a little bit more stagnant here for quite some time,
- 0:33Speaker 2: or at least a period of time, so time.
- 0:35Speaker 1: To get prepared.
- 0:36Speaker 2: We're going to kick this off with Hunter Hogan with
- 0:39Speaker 2: a Missouri public lan buck that attacked here recently. And
- 0:43Speaker 2: as you know, Roughfresh is brought to you by land
- 0:44Speaker 2: dot Com, the leading online real estate marketplace to find
- 0:47Speaker 2: your perfect rural, recreational, agricultural, or hunting properties here in
- 0:51Speaker 2: the US.
- 0:53Speaker 1: To kick things off here, Hunter Hogan in Missouri, here
- 0:56Speaker 1: we go, all right.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Next up on the line, we have Hunter Hogan who
- 1:06Speaker 2: connected with the Missouri Public land Buck. I told you
- 1:10Speaker 2: I was going to put you on the spot, so
- 1:11Speaker 2: here it is how many public land acres are in
- 1:16Speaker 2: the state of Missouri.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Oh, good lord, this is just going to be a guess,
- 1:22Speaker 3: but I'm gonna guess four hundred thousand.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Your way off. You're way off.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Three point five million public land acres in the state
- 1:31Speaker 2: of Missouri, which has got to be one of the
- 1:33Speaker 2: most in the Midwest. And so in twenty twenty four
- 1:37Speaker 2: there was two hundred and seventy five deer shot, but
- 1:40Speaker 2: only fifty six thousand were shot with the bow. You
- 1:44Speaker 2: were for the twenty twenty five stats. You're going to
- 1:46Speaker 2: be a public land buck with archery equipment. So congratulations
- 1:50Speaker 2: on your recent success.
- 1:51Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 1:53Speaker 2: So let's let's kind of dive right into it. How
- 1:56Speaker 2: does some of this come together? I saw on your
- 1:59Speaker 2: most one of your most recent posts. You know you'd
- 2:00Speaker 2: hunted a lot of days here. I know you already
- 2:03Speaker 2: had success in another state earlier in the season, but
- 2:06Speaker 2: your home state of Missouri. What was your game plan
- 2:09Speaker 2: to try to connect with the buck? You know, earlier
- 2:11Speaker 2: in the year, when most people were banking on November,
- 2:14Speaker 2: you'd already made a plan come together.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Yeah, early season seems to be kind of my thing
- 2:21Speaker 3: so far in the last four or five years since
- 2:23Speaker 3: I started like filming and you know, hunting more than usual.
- 2:30Speaker 3: So like, I really key in on early season, mainly
- 2:36Speaker 3: because I'm hunting public land in all the states. All
- 2:38Speaker 3: all of my kills have been public land so far,
- 2:41Speaker 3: so it's just like, yes, November is a magical time,
- 2:44Speaker 3: but a lot of times there's a lot of people
- 2:47Speaker 3: on public land at that time and the.
- 2:49Speaker 5: Deer get pushed off the properties.
- 2:51Speaker 3: So even though it's way more challenging and difficult to
- 2:56Speaker 3: hunt early season, my like percentage chance of getting on
- 3:04Speaker 3: a big mature buck on public land is way higher
- 3:08Speaker 3: during that time. So yeah, I worked really hard over
- 3:14Speaker 3: the summer just scouting a lot of different properties a
- 3:18Speaker 3: lot of different parts of the state this year and
- 3:22Speaker 3: just tried to make a hit list of bucks to
- 3:28Speaker 3: where I had multiple mature, big bucks that I was
- 3:32Speaker 3: willing to go after found. And so that's kind of
- 3:38Speaker 3: what I keyedd on. And it was a tough start
- 3:41Speaker 3: to the season because it was like a new moon
- 3:45Speaker 3: right at the beginning of season. I think we had
- 3:47Speaker 3: like one or two days of underfoot red moon and
- 3:50Speaker 3: then it went straight into a new moon, and that
- 3:53Speaker 3: just made it a tough start. I feel like it
- 3:56Speaker 3: took that October roll and just moved it forward.
- 4:01Speaker 5: So we we went a long.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Time before, or I went a long time before seeing
- 4:07Speaker 3: like a mature buck. And I had two or three
- 4:09Speaker 3: buddies that we have like a group chat and stay
- 4:14Speaker 3: really connected with each other, and we all hunt and
- 4:16Speaker 3: hunt a lot and hunt really hard, and nobody was
- 4:20Speaker 3: seeing mature bucks.
- 4:21Speaker 5: So it was it was pretty tough for the first
- 4:24Speaker 5: two weeks.
- 4:25Speaker 3: And I ended up hunting twenty days total, and I
- 4:28Speaker 3: ended up connecting with with a good mature buck. He
- 4:32Speaker 3: wasn't even one that was necessarily on the hit list
- 4:34Speaker 3: or one of the giants that I had found, but
- 4:38Speaker 3: hunt for twenty days and he kind of you kind
- 4:41Speaker 3: of you get you want to fill the tag, you know.
- 4:44Speaker 3: So I had a friend come up for the day
- 4:47Speaker 3: and and he was his name's Dean, and he had
- 4:50Speaker 3: already tagged out, so he he came up and filmed
- 4:53Speaker 3: for me for a day and a half and he
- 4:55Speaker 3: was in the tree with me, and we set our
- 4:58Speaker 3: stand sixty five yards from he was betted, and that
- 5:01Speaker 3: buck stand up and I was like, yeah, yeah, it's
- 5:04Speaker 3: time to fill this tag.
- 5:05Speaker 5: So it was pretty fun.
- 5:08Speaker 2: So when you set up, did you know he was
- 5:09Speaker 2: bet at sixty five yards awake or did you set
- 5:12Speaker 2: up and you found him once you got set up.
- 5:16Speaker 5: I knew.
- 5:17Speaker 3: I was pretty confident that a mature buck was using
- 5:20Speaker 3: that betting area, and I didn't know how far away
- 5:24Speaker 3: he might be because I've had deer I've got in
- 5:27Speaker 3: that area before, and I've had deer like twenty yards
- 5:29Speaker 3: under marine, and I've had deer like one hundred yards
- 5:32Speaker 3: from me. So that specific spot was really good for
- 5:38Speaker 3: like the first week of October, because as these bucks
- 5:42Speaker 3: started to like you know, they get hard worn, they
- 5:46Speaker 3: start like tinkering with each other. I videoed a lot
- 5:48Speaker 3: of bucks fighting. I think I saw probably thirty different
- 5:51Speaker 3: bucks throughout the twenty days of hunting, and they started like,
- 5:55Speaker 3: you know, playing around, but still buddy buddy. Well once that,
- 6:00Speaker 3: you know, first week of October hits the mature bucks, they're.
- 6:03Speaker 5: Not so buddy buddy anymore.
- 6:05Speaker 3: And so I watched a couple five year olds a
- 6:07Speaker 3: few days before, like they're still around the little bucks,
- 6:11Speaker 3: but they're like, hey, get out of my way, like hey,
- 6:13Speaker 3: I don't want to I don't want to play anymore.
- 6:16Speaker 3: And So that betting area that I went into, I
- 6:21Speaker 3: knew that there's a lot of mature bucks like northeast,
- 6:24Speaker 3: south and west of there, and I hadn't seen any
- 6:27Speaker 3: like in that betting area specifically over the summer. But
- 6:30Speaker 3: as those bachelor groups were splitting up and the big
- 6:33Speaker 3: bucks were getting territorial and starting to make some big
- 6:35Speaker 3: scrapes and stuff, I knew that that was a betting
- 6:39Speaker 3: area that one of the mature bucks was going to
- 6:41Speaker 3: take over and become dominant on.
- 6:44Speaker 5: So that was kind of my game plan going into
- 6:46Speaker 5: that spot.
- 6:48Speaker 1: And I read that you were like thirty feet high.
- 6:50Speaker 2: That is much higher than what most people set their
- 6:53Speaker 2: stands at or you know, I feel like honey lower
- 6:57Speaker 2: has become more popular. A lot of people still are
- 6:59Speaker 2: that eighteen to twenty two feet, because that's kind of
- 7:01Speaker 2: what we've all been conditioned and trained to think the
- 7:04Speaker 2: appropriate hike to be thirty feet. You might need to
- 7:09Speaker 2: get air traffic control. It's to be that high out there, man,
- 7:13Speaker 2: that's way up there. Why why do you set up
- 7:14Speaker 2: that high?
- 7:17Speaker 4: Man?
- 7:17Speaker 5: I I'll try not to go too deep.
- 7:21Speaker 3: On this, but like, I think that the only way
- 7:25Speaker 3: that a buck is going to reach maturity on public
- 7:30Speaker 3: land is if he goes against the grain or against
- 7:33Speaker 3: the trends.
- 7:34Speaker 4: So like.
- 7:36Speaker 3: I have done it before, but I haven't found much
- 7:39Speaker 3: success of going in really deep and hanging a low
- 7:43Speaker 3: set in a thick area of trees, you know. And
- 7:46Speaker 3: it's like both the deer I've killed this year, one
- 7:50Speaker 3: was at you know, thirty one foot high, and the
- 7:52Speaker 3: other one was right at forty foot high, And the
- 7:55Speaker 3: reason for that was I needed to be that high
- 7:58Speaker 3: to shoot down into the bending area. And we just
- 8:01Speaker 3: I just posted a YouTube video and you can see,
- 8:04Speaker 3: like the deer's at twenty five yards and you can
- 8:07Speaker 3: you have to like pick out spots to even see
- 8:10Speaker 3: his body through the weeds. And that was from forty
- 8:13Speaker 3: foot high, you know, So like I need to be
- 8:15Speaker 3: that high in order to one see into it and
- 8:18Speaker 3: to make an ethical shot into it. And then both
- 8:21Speaker 3: of those were less than one hundred and fifty yards
- 8:24Speaker 3: from a parking lot, like to my tree to my
- 8:28Speaker 3: truck was like less than one hundred and fifty yards.
- 8:30Speaker 3: So I just think that like a lot of times
- 8:34Speaker 3: we put these white tail in a box and we
- 8:37Speaker 3: say they're supposed to do this, but they're supposed to
- 8:39Speaker 3: do that, and I think the only way that they
- 8:42Speaker 3: can avoid pressure and get smart on public land is
- 8:47Speaker 3: they either die doing what they're supposed to do, or
- 8:49Speaker 3: they do what they're not supposed to do and they
- 8:51Speaker 3: get around the people. So I see that a lot
- 8:54Speaker 3: with with multiple different states and public lands and high
- 8:57Speaker 3: pressure situations on doing something a little bit different. So
- 9:01Speaker 3: you just got to adapt to what they're doing. And
- 9:05Speaker 3: that's why I kind of rely on my summer scouting
- 9:08Speaker 3: to tell me what that buck likes to do, because
- 9:10Speaker 3: they're way more visible in the summer and they're way
- 9:12Speaker 3: more easy to find before stuff grows up seven eight,
- 9:16Speaker 3: twelve foot tall, you know.
- 9:18Speaker 5: And so that's.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Why I go scout over the summer so much and
- 9:22Speaker 3: learn that buck and figure out how he's getting hold
- 9:24Speaker 3: on the public land.
- 9:26Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean I think that obviously it's it's
- 9:29Speaker 2: working for you, and so I think for anyone that's listening,
- 9:31Speaker 2: they have to maybe think outside of the box here
- 9:36Speaker 2: looking deeper into the season, and how much does that
- 9:39Speaker 2: strategy change when we get a hard frost. You know,
- 9:42Speaker 2: those really tall seven or eight foot tall weeds start
- 9:44Speaker 2: to lay over a little bit, you know, they go
- 9:46Speaker 2: from seven or eight foot tall to maybe five foot tall,
- 9:50Speaker 2: you know, depending on where you're out of the country
- 9:51Speaker 2: and everything else. But does that strategy and betting area,
- 9:54Speaker 2: how much does that potentially change just for someone that
- 9:57Speaker 2: listens to this now and wants to try to implement,
- 10:00Speaker 2: you know, a similar game plan.
- 10:02Speaker 3: Yeah, my strategy changes a lot when it comes to
- 10:05Speaker 3: like later in the season and hard frosts. And I
- 10:09Speaker 3: don't know, I feel like I feel like ninety percent
- 10:13Speaker 3: of my strategy revolves around people and pressure more than
- 10:17Speaker 3: it does just like your activity and stuff.
- 10:19Speaker 5: So you know, last week of.
- 10:22Speaker 3: October, first week in November, that's what everybody's hunting, Like,
- 10:26Speaker 3: everybody's hunting the Midwest at that time. So like in
- 10:31Speaker 3: years past, I would actually take a break from whitetail
- 10:34Speaker 3: and go mulder hunting, and there's very few people meal
- 10:39Speaker 3: deer hunting at that time. Most people go mulder hunting
- 10:41Speaker 3: in like September or something, you know. So I don't know,
- 10:46Speaker 3: I think there's I think there's ways around it. I
- 10:50Speaker 3: think that once that hard frost hits during these next
- 10:53Speaker 3: few weeks, grapes are going to be really key. And
- 10:59Speaker 3: I know that's kind of like a hill country deal,
- 11:01Speaker 3: but I hunt a lot of flat country, and even
- 11:03Speaker 3: in flat country, like straps are super key, like they
- 11:06Speaker 3: are somewhere, and they might be they might not be
- 11:09Speaker 3: in like the most obvious places, or they might be
- 11:13Speaker 3: in some weird places. But like, all the bucks are
- 11:16Speaker 3: making scrapes, all the bucks are using lifting branches, and
- 11:21Speaker 3: just keying in on those is going to be key
- 11:24Speaker 3: to like finding a mature buck. And you might not
- 11:29Speaker 3: see thirty deer like I did in the last twenty days.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Looking into the future here, you know this this going
- 11:36Speaker 2: live October fifteenth, So someone's listening on October fifteenth or sixteenth,
- 11:40Speaker 2: or you know, seventeenth. Even the temperatures look to be
- 11:43Speaker 2: pretty stagnant. We's here in Illinois, not a ton you know,
- 11:47Speaker 2: not that mid October cold front that we all hope for.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Knowing that, is there anything going on with the moon.
- 11:53Speaker 2: It seems like you're very in tune with the moon.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Is there anything from the October fifteenth to the twenty
- 11:57Speaker 2: second that has you excited minus the weather not cooperating
- 12:02Speaker 2: and you're like, oh man, this we're in this phase
- 12:04Speaker 2: of the moon.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Or I'm not a moon guy, so I'm.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Just curious what your perspective is over the next seven
- 12:08Speaker 2: days in regard to the moon.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Yeah, i'd have to check my calendar. I use the
- 12:14Speaker 3: app Moon Guide by Adam Hayes. I'm not affiliated with them.
- 12:19Speaker 3: It's just what I use, what I love, and what
- 12:22Speaker 3: I found the most success with. The number one best
- 12:27Speaker 3: moon phase is an overhead red moon, which in context
- 12:31Speaker 3: means that the moon position is straight overhead within two
- 12:36Speaker 3: hours of the evening, like of dark in the evening,
- 12:41Speaker 3: So I think in the early I think, like I
- 12:46Speaker 3: want to say, the twenty second or third or something
- 12:50Speaker 3: like that is the start of an overhead red moon.
- 12:54Speaker 3: That's going to be your best like mature buck movement
- 12:57Speaker 3: time in daylight. So that's that's my number one favorite
- 13:01Speaker 3: moon phase. My second favorite is a full moon on
- 13:04Speaker 3: the horizon, so like there's a three day perier and
- 13:07Speaker 3: I've killed on this one the most actually, and I
- 13:11Speaker 3: just killed both of my bucks this year on this
- 13:13Speaker 3: moon phase is that full moon on the horizon when
- 13:16Speaker 3: it like the first three days of a full moon,
- 13:18Speaker 3: it'll break over the horizon before dark. And for some reason,
- 13:23Speaker 3: like when that full moon breaks over the horizon, the
- 13:25Speaker 3: deer get on their feet, and then after those three days,
- 13:29Speaker 3: it keeps rising later and later and later, and the
- 13:33Speaker 3: deer movement seems to be later and after dark. But
- 13:36Speaker 3: those first three days, I don't know what it does.
- 13:39Speaker 3: I don't know why it does it. I just know
- 13:41Speaker 3: I've seen it in multiple different states and a lot
- 13:45Speaker 3: of different years now for four or five years, and
- 13:48Speaker 3: that full moon will get them on their feet. And
- 13:51Speaker 3: there's a lot of controversy over the moon, but I've
- 13:56Speaker 3: sat over bedding areas a lot, and it's like I
- 13:59Speaker 3: literally watch them, you know, go from laying down to
- 14:03Speaker 3: standing up on their feet, and they might mosy around
- 14:06Speaker 3: in the betting area, which if they're betting them like
- 14:10Speaker 3: a seedar thicket, you might not see this, so it
- 14:12Speaker 3: might not the moon might not have as big an
- 14:14Speaker 3: effect for you. But like I'm hunting over their beds
- 14:17Speaker 3: like where they're betting, and when I see them stand
- 14:20Speaker 3: up and get on their feet on certain moons and
- 14:22Speaker 3: not get up at all on other moons, I'm like, Okay,
- 14:25Speaker 3: it's one hundred percent. And I think if you're sitting
- 14:28Speaker 3: on a field edge or a transition zone, you're gonna
- 14:30Speaker 3: be like the whole moon stuff is bs but if
- 14:33Speaker 3: you're sitting over their bed and watching them stand up,
- 14:37Speaker 3: it's one hundred percent, Like has a huge effect on things.
- 14:41Speaker 3: So I think that overhead red moon in in like
- 14:45Speaker 3: the October twenties. It's somewhere in there. You'd have to
- 14:49Speaker 3: look it up on that app but I think that's
- 14:52Speaker 3: going to be your prime time for movement in October.
- 14:56Speaker 4: I like it.
- 14:57Speaker 2: So looking here over the next seven days on a
- 15:00Speaker 2: scale one to ten, where do you put it? Knowing
- 15:02Speaker 2: that that phase of the moon should fall within this
- 15:06Speaker 2: time period, I'll skip ten being the best best week
- 15:09Speaker 2: of the year, one being one of the worst.
- 15:11Speaker 1: Weeks of the year.
- 15:16Speaker 5: October can be tough, man.
- 15:18Speaker 3: I think if we had an overhead red moon and
- 15:22Speaker 3: a cold front, or even like a little bit of
- 15:25Speaker 3: a temperature drop, I think that would help a lot.
- 15:30Speaker 3: Or if you compare it with like a barometric pressure
- 15:33Speaker 3: over thirty, it's.
- 15:35Speaker 5: Going to be fire.
- 15:36Speaker 3: I'd have to have a cold front to rank it
- 15:39Speaker 3: number one best week of the year, but it might
- 15:43Speaker 3: be I don't know. The end of October can be
- 15:45Speaker 3: pretty magical, so it might be second best right in
- 15:48Speaker 3: there somewhere, it's going to be in the top three
- 15:51Speaker 3: for sure.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Okay, I like it.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Well, congratulations once again, Hunter, and good luck the rest
- 15:57Speaker 2: of the season. If people want to catch one of
- 15:58Speaker 2: your hunts here one of your recent huts, and I'm
- 16:00Speaker 2: sure this one will be coming up here too pretty soon.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Where do they go watch these?
- 16:05Speaker 3: My YouTube is Hunter Hogan Productions, and then I post
- 16:10Speaker 3: a lot on my Instagram on stories and just posts
- 16:12Speaker 3: and reels and stuff like that to kind.
- 16:14Speaker 5: Of keep up through the season.
- 16:15Speaker 3: Not not as like highly produced and it's bow life
- 16:19Speaker 3: Hogan right on.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Congratulations once again, and thanks for hopping on.
- 16:23Speaker 5: Thanks man.
- 16:24Speaker 4: All right.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Next up on the line, we have Rob sand who
- 16:27Speaker 2: recently tagged a ginormous deer in the state of Iowa
- 16:31Speaker 2: on a des Moines.
- 16:34Speaker 1: What would be the exact phrase of that hunt opportunity.
- 16:37Speaker 6: I'd call it an urban hunt. They've got a they've
- 16:40Speaker 6: got an urban hunting program to reduce population. So if
- 16:45Speaker 6: you get three antlerless deer in the first year, you
- 16:48Speaker 6: can you can get into the lottery to get an
- 16:51Speaker 6: incentive buck tag for the following year.
- 16:54Speaker 1: That's really cool.
- 16:55Speaker 2: So I've been kicking these off with the tribute question
- 16:58Speaker 2: in regard to the state for the guest So your
- 17:01Speaker 2: question this this week, right now, what county in year
- 17:07Speaker 2: for bonus points was the non typical buck shot in
- 17:11Speaker 2: the state of Iowa. So the county in the year,
- 17:13Speaker 2: and then I'll tell you the score.
- 17:14Speaker 6: And so so I'm I'm from Decora, Northeast Iowa, and
- 17:19Speaker 6: we have some huge bucks and winn Is chic and
- 17:21Speaker 6: al McKee and Clayton. But but I'm gonna bet southern
- 17:25Speaker 6: central Iowa.
- 17:26Speaker 7: So I'm gonna I'm gonna go with Appanows.
- 17:29Speaker 2: You're close, You're close. It was in Monroe County in
- 17:32Speaker 2: two thousand and three. Yeah, and it was shot in
- 17:35Speaker 2: two thousand and three and it scored three hundred and
- 17:37Speaker 2: seven and five eights inches. That's bonkers, well known as
- 17:41Speaker 2: the Albia buck. So okay, that's the that's the trivia
- 17:45Speaker 2: question for you. So let's let's dive into your most
- 17:49Speaker 2: recent hunt.
- 17:49Speaker 4: Here.
- 17:49Speaker 2: We had a really good cold front. When did you
- 17:53Speaker 2: find of this, dear this year is a really really
- 17:55Speaker 2: big deer and you have it here with us if
- 17:57Speaker 2: you want to show us real quick and we'll dive
- 17:58Speaker 2: into the story.
- 17:59Speaker 7: Sure, sure, sure, yeah.
- 18:01Speaker 6: So I have been in the Urban bow Hunting program
- 18:06Speaker 6: for about thirteen years. Here's here's the rack we're talking about.
- 18:10Speaker 6: He just got scored yesterday green score because this was
- 18:15Speaker 6: a week ago today. But two O nine gross, two
- 18:19Speaker 6: o two net. I mean, just ridiculous. I'm not even
- 18:22Speaker 6: holding it out in front of me. Man, So this
- 18:28Speaker 6: dear a buddy sent a picture of it to me. Uh,
- 18:33Speaker 6: I shouldn't and and uh, I just kinda I've never
- 18:40Speaker 6: seen anything that big, whether statewide or in town in
- 18:45Speaker 6: the city here. Then you know, my my I grew up,
- 18:48Speaker 6: my dad taught me to bowhunt, So I've been behunting
- 18:51Speaker 6: most of my life, just absolutely bonkers. And so I
- 18:55Speaker 6: just started. I went from where he lived, and I
- 18:58Speaker 6: started knocking on doors and made phone calls, and I
- 19:02Speaker 6: cold calling people I never met before, knocking on doors
- 19:05Speaker 6: for people I never met before, just saying, hey, you know,
- 19:08Speaker 6: there's a deer population problem in Des Moines here. And
- 19:11Speaker 6: so they have this program and I'm trying to have
- 19:15Speaker 6: been in it for a long time, and it's very safe.
- 19:17Speaker 6: You have to shoot from an elevation, you have to
- 19:19Speaker 6: pass a marksmanship test every year, just trying to make
- 19:22Speaker 6: people comfortable to.
- 19:24Speaker 7: Understand that it's, you know, nothing scary. And I had some.
- 19:30Speaker 6: Success and a lot of people who said no, Probably
- 19:32Speaker 6: a dozen people roughly that said no, probably eight people
- 19:36Speaker 6: that said yes. It was kind of interesting because you'd
- 19:39Speaker 6: have sometimes both both a husband and wife would come
- 19:43Speaker 6: to the door, and one would be okay with it
- 19:45Speaker 6: and one wouldn't. But sometimes it was the husband that
- 19:47Speaker 6: was okay with it, and other times it was a
- 19:49Speaker 6: wife that was okay with it and the husband wasn't.
- 19:51Speaker 7: So just a real mix.
- 19:54Speaker 6: But I just I went from where he lived, where
- 19:57Speaker 6: he took that one picture that he sent me an
- 19:59Speaker 6: in velvet, absolutely bonkers.
- 20:01Speaker 7: And I just I got on on X.
- 20:04Speaker 6: I looked at topography maps, I looked at natural funnels.
- 20:09Speaker 6: I would take bike rides to this neighborhood and pay
- 20:12Speaker 6: attention to which yards were fenced in, you know, that
- 20:15Speaker 6: kind of thing to really try to figure out, like,
- 20:17Speaker 6: you know, where are.
- 20:18Speaker 7: They going to be moving?
- 20:19Speaker 6: And over the course of August and September, like slowly
- 20:24Speaker 6: sort of you know, zero da in on what I
- 20:26Speaker 6: thought would be his home turf. And by the time
- 20:30Speaker 6: the season opened for the urban season, it's a little
- 20:33Speaker 6: earlier than the statewide September twentieth, I had a few
- 20:36Speaker 6: spots where I had pictures of him in the daytime
- 20:39Speaker 6: a couple places, multiple times, and so I was like,
- 20:42Speaker 6: all right, I feel pretty good about this. I got
- 20:44Speaker 6: a couple stands set up, and I actually had two
- 20:47Speaker 6: encounters with him before I tagged him really once once
- 20:51Speaker 6: it was like the second day of the season, and
- 20:53Speaker 6: it's like, I'm in my stand, it's two minutes into
- 20:57Speaker 6: hunting light and it's just not bright enough. I mean,
- 21:00Speaker 6: maybe it would have been if I'm forty three. Maybe
- 21:02Speaker 6: if I was twenty three, I would have been like,
- 21:04Speaker 6: there he is, boom. But it didn't work that way,
- 21:09Speaker 6: you know, I was. I was not certain it was him.
- 21:12Speaker 6: There's actually another one around that doesn't have the two
- 21:18Speaker 6: it doesn't have the two drops over here.
- 21:20Speaker 7: It's just got one. And so I wasn't sure which
- 21:24Speaker 7: one it was.
- 21:25Speaker 6: The other guy's substantially smaller, and so I didn't I
- 21:29Speaker 6: didn't want to spend my I didn't want to punch
- 21:31Speaker 6: my ticket if it was the wrong buck.
- 21:33Speaker 7: Yeah, and so I was I was careful.
- 21:35Speaker 6: I was like, all right, you know, I know he's around.
- 21:38Speaker 6: I'm not going to do this unless I'm sure it's him.
- 21:39Speaker 6: And I wasn't sure, so I didn't. I didn't fling
- 21:43Speaker 6: an arrow at him. And then another time I was
- 21:55Speaker 6: climbing into my stand and turned around and there he was,
- 21:58Speaker 6: so I froze. There was no fixing anything or even
- 22:04Speaker 6: getting a chance to get a shot there, and he
- 22:06Speaker 6: kind of wandered off. And then I probably had ten
- 22:10Speaker 6: days where I didn't see him or get a picture
- 22:13Speaker 6: of him during the day. And then yeah, this a
- 22:17Speaker 6: week ago, Monday, finally the heat finally broke. Yeah, it
- 22:21Speaker 6: was like less of a cold front and more of
- 22:23Speaker 6: like a comfortable front finally.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Yeah, it's actually more like towards seasonal averages, but it
- 22:31Speaker 2: felt like a cold front because of where it was prior.
- 22:34Speaker 2: So where all three of these encounters were. They all
- 22:37Speaker 2: from the same tree, the same area or where you
- 22:40Speaker 2: bounce around.
- 22:41Speaker 7: The same area.
- 22:43Speaker 6: One was in the same property where I same private
- 22:48Speaker 6: property where I actually ended up shooting him, and the
- 22:50Speaker 6: other one was in.
- 22:51Speaker 7: A different one.
- 22:52Speaker 6: But it was the two spots where he was on
- 22:54Speaker 6: camera the most during the day, and one was better
- 22:58Speaker 6: for a south wind and one was better for a
- 23:00Speaker 6: north wind. And with all the heat, we've been having
- 23:04Speaker 6: a lot of south winds, or we had been, and
- 23:07Speaker 6: then finally when this front came in, I knew that
- 23:11Speaker 6: that first day of it was going to have to
- 23:13Speaker 6: be my day because the other two days there's I
- 23:15Speaker 6: was going to have to be out of town. So
- 23:16Speaker 6: I went out in the morning, didn't see a thing.
- 23:20Speaker 6: It was rainy, went out again for the evening hunt.
- 23:25Speaker 6: I actually ended up getting down out of my stand
- 23:28Speaker 6: walking the very short, you know, thirty yards back to
- 23:32Speaker 6: my truck parked in the driveway of the people's who's property.
- 23:35Speaker 6: I was hunting in and sitting in there for a
- 23:37Speaker 6: while because it was raining so heavy that I was like,
- 23:39Speaker 6: there's no way he's going to be moving. It got
- 23:41Speaker 6: real heavy for a while, so I just sat in
- 23:42Speaker 6: there and warmed up and try to avoid getting totally
- 23:47Speaker 6: drenched yet. And then it lightened up again five thirty
- 23:53Speaker 6: five forty five, so I went back out, got back
- 23:56Speaker 6: up into my tree, and forty five minutes later I
- 24:02Speaker 6: see a buck behind a tree and pull out my bikox,
- 24:07Speaker 6: tell it's him, get my bow off a hangar, and
- 24:12Speaker 6: at that point is maybe forty yards away, and he
- 24:18Speaker 6: starts coming towards me.
- 24:21Speaker 7: And I actually I had to move at one point,
- 24:28Speaker 7: and it had.
- 24:28Speaker 6: Been so wet that I slipped off of my climbing stick.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Jeez.
- 24:33Speaker 7: And I started saddle hunting probably three years ago.
- 24:37Speaker 6: I should see two. Like I said, I've been hunting
- 24:39Speaker 6: for a long time. I actually the last time I
- 24:42Speaker 6: took a buck it was November of twenty twenty two,
- 24:46Speaker 6: and I've passed on decent ones in twenty three and
- 24:49Speaker 6: twenty four because I decided to get serious about my
- 24:51Speaker 6: goal of shooting a booner. I've shot like, I think
- 24:54Speaker 6: eight pop and young bucks, but never anything over one seventy. Actually,
- 24:58Speaker 6: i've shot four between like one fifty, so they're all
- 25:01Speaker 6: packed right in there. Yeah, And I was like, okay,
- 25:03Speaker 6: I gotta quit doing that. And so I slipped off
- 25:09Speaker 6: my climbing stick and my saddle catches me. It was
- 25:12Speaker 6: real tight, but I kind of swung around the tree.
- 25:17Speaker 6: Didn't make any noise or much the rain covered or
- 25:21Speaker 6: whatever noise there was, and I was able to get
- 25:24Speaker 6: back onto it steady myself. And then he stepped up
- 25:28Speaker 6: from behind that tree h twenty five yards and that
- 25:32Speaker 6: was it, quartering away, so just perfect.
- 25:35Speaker 2: Do you think that the slip was buck fever induced
- 25:39Speaker 2: in conjunction of.
- 25:42Speaker 1: I love the wetness.
- 25:43Speaker 6: I will tell you this, I typically don't feel it
- 25:47Speaker 6: at all. The first that that two minutes into hunting
- 25:51Speaker 6: light time when I saw him, and the time that
- 25:53Speaker 6: I saw him getting out of my stand, heart's beating
- 25:57Speaker 6: out of my chest. I mean, I typically am just
- 26:00Speaker 6: was a cucumber. This guy I kind of freaked out.
- 26:02Speaker 6: So it absolutely could have been. The other thing was
- 26:06Speaker 6: I had I kind of soaked through my regular warmer
- 26:11Speaker 6: weather hunting boots in the morning, and so it was
- 26:13Speaker 6: the first time this season wearing my like bigger, thicker
- 26:16Speaker 6: winter boots, and so maybe it was a combination of
- 26:19Speaker 6: wet buck fever and then a boot I hadn't been
- 26:22Speaker 6: hunting in.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure.
- 26:24Speaker 2: What what what do you think had that beer hanging
- 26:28Speaker 2: out there? Was there a you know, a bunch of
- 26:30Speaker 2: acorns dropping in that little area or what was he
- 26:34Speaker 2: was in there?
- 26:35Speaker 6: Okay, tons of olks in there, And then it was
- 26:38Speaker 6: just it was an area that had, for being in
- 26:41Speaker 6: the middle of town, a really big chunk of timber
- 26:45Speaker 6: that didn't really have a road running through it. That's
- 26:49Speaker 6: I mean, there's there's I know there was other folks
- 26:51Speaker 6: who had been hunting in the area, whether In fact,
- 26:56Speaker 6: I know there were two on private property because on
- 26:59Speaker 6: my list of people to call or a couple of homeowners,
- 27:02Speaker 6: and I'd call him up and say, Hey, can I
- 27:04Speaker 6: hunt in your property? And they'd say yes, and I'd
- 27:05Speaker 6: say great, I'll come set up a stand and they'd
- 27:07Speaker 6: say you don't need to. There's already one there because
- 27:10Speaker 6: there's other people that hunt there. So I'd back off.
- 27:14Speaker 6: That to me is like, you know, if somebody else
- 27:17Speaker 6: already called, like that's their spot, I'm not going to
- 27:19Speaker 6: make them trade off and on with me for who
- 27:21Speaker 6: wants to sit on a Saturday morning or something like that. Yeah,
- 27:25Speaker 6: but so people knew know he's around. I was just
- 27:29Speaker 6: in an area where a lot of oak trees, but
- 27:31Speaker 6: there's a ton of oaks in that neighborhood. I would
- 27:33Speaker 6: probably credit that for him how he got so big anyways,
- 27:38Speaker 6: And then it's just kind of like a little sanctuary
- 27:40Speaker 6: area that was probably from his perspective, big enough to
- 27:43Speaker 6: be a real tight home turf without having to travel
- 27:47Speaker 6: much or do much. But truth is, I mean, I
- 27:49Speaker 6: know he had a decent range because I had some
- 27:52Speaker 6: pictures of him spread out around a big area before
- 27:54Speaker 6: I finally narrowed in on a place where I knew
- 27:56Speaker 6: he was going.
- 27:57Speaker 7: Regularly, and I can't tell you it was his home turf.
- 28:00Speaker 6: I can just tell you that he was there often
- 28:02Speaker 6: enough that I felt pretty good and didn't think I
- 28:04Speaker 6: had any other options because the park. I know, there's
- 28:08Speaker 6: a big park nearby, and I didn't have access or
- 28:12Speaker 6: permission to be hunting there, and I think some other
- 28:14Speaker 6: guys were hunting there. And then there was a third
- 28:16Speaker 6: guy who said he had people on his property too.
- 28:19Speaker 5: So.
- 28:20Speaker 7: It was just a question who had him with a
- 28:23Speaker 7: good opportunity.
- 28:23Speaker 2: First, when you had gone around and asked, you know,
- 28:27Speaker 2: twenty some people for permission, did any of them say like, oh,
- 28:30Speaker 2: do you know of that giant deer we've been seeing
- 28:32Speaker 2: in the backyard or was that a common occurrence?
- 28:35Speaker 7: Yes, people knew this, dear A few of them.
- 28:38Speaker 6: A few of them would share pictures and even if
- 28:42Speaker 6: they didn't give me permission to hunt it, they'd say, oh, yeah,
- 28:45Speaker 6: here he is.
- 28:45Speaker 7: He's out there. You can't hunt here, but you know,
- 28:48Speaker 7: good luck.
- 28:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:49Speaker 2: Well, I mean another data point as you're going through
- 28:51Speaker 2: and you know, you know of the payment to get
- 28:54Speaker 2: an opportunity.
- 28:56Speaker 4: Then there was.
- 28:56Speaker 6: Another time where I went up to this property that
- 28:58Speaker 6: I really had to is sort of like, oh, I
- 29:01Speaker 6: think this is going to be great. And as I'm
- 29:03Speaker 6: going down the driveway, I look to my left and
- 29:06Speaker 6: into the timber and there's his little brother.
- 29:10Speaker 7: There's the bachelor group.
- 29:11Speaker 6: The one with the one the one drop time coming off,
- 29:14Speaker 6: and then and then one younger one and they're bedded
- 29:16Speaker 6: down in there. And so I'm like, bingo score. But
- 29:19Speaker 6: the homeowner was out of town. I had to try
- 29:21Speaker 6: to come back a week later. I ended up getting
- 29:24Speaker 6: permission from her, but it wasn't I hunted at her
- 29:26Speaker 6: property and had a few pictures of him there, but.
- 29:29Speaker 7: That wasn't the spot. But yeah, it was. I mean,
- 29:31Speaker 7: it was interesting.
- 29:32Speaker 6: It's just a lot of it's it's and I should
- 29:35Speaker 6: say too for people who haven't done the urban hunt,
- 29:38Speaker 6: deer are exactly the same urban as they are country.
- 29:42Speaker 6: If they're accustomed to a person in a particular place.
- 29:45Speaker 7: It doesn't bother them.
- 29:46Speaker 6: And so you'll have deer that you know, they know
- 29:49Speaker 6: they're going to see you in your driveway walking to
- 29:52Speaker 6: and from your car.
- 29:53Speaker 7: But if they if they figure.
- 29:55Speaker 6: Out that you're up in a tree, they're going to
- 29:56Speaker 6: freak out, just the same as they would out in
- 29:59Speaker 6: the woods. It's all about what's familiar and what they've
- 30:02Speaker 6: come to accept as being sort of like safe and reliable.
- 30:07Speaker 6: And in the urban program, you have to hunt from
- 30:09Speaker 6: an elevated pitch and a tree because the city wants
- 30:13Speaker 6: if you're if you miss, they want your arrow going
- 30:15Speaker 6: into the ground.
- 30:18Speaker 7: And so it's not that different.
- 30:19Speaker 6: You still got to be you still got to play
- 30:20Speaker 6: the wind, you still got to be careful with your
- 30:22Speaker 6: scent because you're you're up there and hoping that they're
- 30:27Speaker 6: going to just not notice you. If they do notice you,
- 30:29Speaker 6: you're busted, just the same as you would be anywhere else.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think that's I've never urban hunted,
- 30:36Speaker 2: but there's always a lot of common threads on different
- 30:39Speaker 2: people's perspectives, and I think a lot of times people
- 30:41Speaker 2: that hadn't actually hunted in an urban setting, but still
- 30:45Speaker 2: a really exciting game of cat and mouse on very small,
- 30:51Speaker 2: very very small parcels, which is a huge challenge.
- 30:54Speaker 6: Yeah, And the best thing to do especially is with
- 30:58Speaker 6: this is was really for me trying to find if
- 31:01Speaker 6: you can two contiguous properties where you can get permission
- 31:04Speaker 6: from both because because of the regulations on you got
- 31:10Speaker 6: to be so far away from buildings and stuff like
- 31:12Speaker 6: that sometimes you'd have to One of the spots that
- 31:15Speaker 6: I had was one where I felt really good about
- 31:18Speaker 6: it because I'd had them on camera. But it was
- 31:20Speaker 6: two folks next to each other, both of whom had
- 31:22Speaker 6: given me permission, And that just gives you a bigger range,
- 31:27Speaker 6: a bigger circle.
- 31:28Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure.
- 31:29Speaker 2: So looking here in the next week, So let's say
- 31:32Speaker 2: October fifteenth to the twenty second, for anyone that's out
- 31:37Speaker 2: there hunting or planning to scout, is there any parting
- 31:39Speaker 2: words of advice now that you already.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Have one down, and.
- 31:43Speaker 2: You know, what would you tell someone that's sitting with
- 31:45Speaker 2: the tag in their pocket to focus on for the
- 31:47Speaker 2: next week?
- 31:48Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, I guess I. Here's here.
- 31:51Speaker 6: This is what was really interesting about this to me.
- 31:53Speaker 6: I typically have not been big into scouting. I kind
- 31:56Speaker 6: of hit the rut and I sit a lot and
- 32:00Speaker 6: sort of see who shows up, and I might set
- 32:02Speaker 6: up a few cameras to sort of see who's out there.
- 32:06Speaker 6: You know, this is the first time I really went
- 32:08Speaker 6: early season, and normally I don't want to do early
- 32:12Speaker 6: season because I don't want the bugs, and I hate
- 32:14Speaker 6: the heat, and I just I got a couple of
- 32:17Speaker 6: thin pieces of insect treated camo and that was great.
- 32:23Speaker 6: And you know what else is great about it. You
- 32:25Speaker 6: don't have a ton of leaves down but are spoiling
- 32:27Speaker 6: every single step with crunching as you walk around, and
- 32:31Speaker 6: you don't have to you don't have to bundle up.
- 32:33Speaker 6: So I mean, I guess i'd say, if you're if
- 32:36Speaker 6: you haven't tried early season before, give it a shot,
- 32:39Speaker 6: because this is the first time I did it, and
- 32:40Speaker 6: you can really have a chance to pattern a big
- 32:42Speaker 6: buck before they start going crazy with the rut. I
- 32:45Speaker 6: guess i'd say over the next week. I mean, it
- 32:47Speaker 6: looks to me like temperatures are going to be pretty consistent.
- 32:50Speaker 6: I'd just say, you know, you can't shoot them from
- 32:52Speaker 6: the couch. I don't think there's any particular day that's
- 32:54Speaker 6: looking better than any other. But as long as you're
- 32:56Speaker 6: out there, you're going to have a chance.
- 32:58Speaker 1: I like it.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Well, thank you so much, Rob. Congratulations once again, you've
- 33:03Speaker 2: achieved your goal and then some and got into two
- 33:06Speaker 2: hundred inch club. So I mean, you went from straight
- 33:08Speaker 2: over one seventy to straight home from two hundred so congratulations.
- 33:12Speaker 7: Yeah, and it warred me out.
- 33:13Speaker 6: I mean, this, this cold I've got here is I
- 33:16Speaker 6: was exercising less and sleeping less for two weeks going
- 33:19Speaker 6: after this guy. But I would say I'll recover from
- 33:21Speaker 6: this and this will last for sure.
- 33:24Speaker 1: We'll congratulations once again.
- 33:26Speaker 7: Yeah, thank you.
- 33:27Speaker 4: All right.
- 33:27Speaker 2: We have Josh Prophet down in Kentucky. Good morning, Josh.
- 33:31Speaker 2: How does it feel to you have a buck tag
- 33:33Speaker 2: field already?
- 33:37Speaker 4: I never killed one this earlier. Honestly, I'm not sure
- 33:39Speaker 4: that I'll like it.
- 33:43Speaker 1: I get it.
- 33:44Speaker 2: Yeah, the season feels early, but but you ended up
- 33:47Speaker 2: connecting with the buck Let's let's hear all about it.
- 33:50Speaker 2: What made it happen this early? And compared to years previously?
- 33:54Speaker 4: So I'm I don't know the exact day. I'd have
- 33:58Speaker 4: to really sit down, but I'm like two decades twenty
- 34:02Speaker 4: years in on like public land hunting. And when I
- 34:06Speaker 4: opened the shop last year, I mean it just opened
- 34:10Speaker 4: doors for me. And between now and then, man, I've
- 34:17Speaker 4: landed somewhere around two thousand acres of private ground. One
- 34:23Speaker 4: of them is a is A is a good sized
- 34:25Speaker 4: farm for me. It's it's a thousand acres continuous at
- 34:29Speaker 4: least my first farm ever this year, and between all that,
- 34:33Speaker 4: I told myself, I just wasn't hun public this year
- 34:36Speaker 4: is gonna be private only?
- 34:38Speaker 1: Yeah? So was that? Was that an awkward transition?
- 34:42Speaker 2: Like when like your DNA has been hunting public for
- 34:44Speaker 2: so long and then you know, you get the opportunity
- 34:46Speaker 2: to hunt some some private and you know, do some
- 34:48Speaker 2: things that you can't do on public.
- 34:50Speaker 1: Quite ultimately, the.
- 34:54Speaker 4: I put out some mineral that wasn't no big deal,
- 34:56Speaker 4: but the weirdest thing for me, and I'm I'm not
- 34:59Speaker 4: saying I'm I did it, but I'm not really for it.
- 35:02Speaker 4: I did put out some corn just because it was
- 35:04Speaker 4: legal here after August first. It's it's so different, man.
- 35:13Speaker 4: You know, I've drove my struck everywhere I could drive it.
- 35:18Speaker 4: You know, there were times in my life where I
- 35:20Speaker 4: was walking like a thousand miles from like year to year,
- 35:25Speaker 4: and I don't even it's sad, I don't. I don't
- 35:29Speaker 4: know how far I'll be walking, but it won't be
- 35:31Speaker 4: near as much.
- 35:34Speaker 2: So you end up getting some private And then so
- 35:38Speaker 2: tell us a little bit about the plan, because I
- 35:40Speaker 2: feel like anytime someone typically connects this early in the season,
- 35:44Speaker 2: they had put a good offseason plan together or at
- 35:47Speaker 2: least had recent intel to make a play.
- 35:50Speaker 1: I feel like a lot of and I feel like.
- 35:51Speaker 2: That's a disconnect with a lot of people this time
- 35:53Speaker 2: of year, where someone sees success from someone else where,
- 35:55Speaker 2: it's like, well, you didn't see what they did in
- 35:57Speaker 2: the summer to potentially have the success. You know, this
- 35:59Speaker 2: early in the season, So dial it back to the
- 36:02Speaker 2: summer kind of when did you find this deer? And
- 36:04Speaker 2: then what was the strategy to for it all to
- 36:07Speaker 2: come excuse me, for all of it to come together.
- 36:09Speaker 4: So it's a we'll go back about We'll go back
- 36:14Speaker 4: a year or at least until last last winner. So
- 36:18Speaker 4: this farm that I have, an outfitter has had this
- 36:22Speaker 4: farm leased for roughly twenty years. During the twenty years
- 36:28Speaker 4: they have switched hands and I'd say the last ten
- 36:32Speaker 4: or twelve years there they're primarily a wing shooting outfitter.
- 36:37Speaker 4: Pezant's quel Doners do from what I'm told, they do
- 36:42Speaker 4: deer hunt, but they live in Florida. They got a
- 36:46Speaker 4: ranch in Colorado. So I'm just trying to paint the
- 36:49Speaker 4: picture for you here that basically that whole roughly twenty
- 36:54Speaker 4: five hundred to three thousand acres there. In my eyes,
- 36:57Speaker 4: it's almost like a deer sanctuary. There's people all over it.
- 37:03Speaker 4: They have eighteen hundreds a day, guides, a lot of shooting,
- 37:07Speaker 4: just you know, just a good camaraderie sport. But I think,
- 37:10Speaker 4: you know, over the years, the deer they just they
- 37:14Speaker 4: figured it out. You know, they don't really get messed with.
- 37:16Speaker 4: They just got to deal with the people. And between
- 37:23Speaker 4: last August in last January in these fields, and I
- 37:29Speaker 4: got to have one of them. Least, I've seen four
- 37:31Speaker 4: bone and crockett deer. And yeah, just from the road
- 37:39Speaker 4: in like January, Man, there would be so many deer
- 37:41Speaker 4: out there, I would I'd lose camp like over one
- 37:44Speaker 4: hundred you know, probably ten bucks that I would shoot.
- 37:47Speaker 4: Maybe not somebody else. But and I got the guy
- 37:51Speaker 4: in the chair in the barber chair, and he's an
- 37:55Speaker 4: older gentleman, lives in Kansas, and I just asked him
- 37:59Speaker 4: about and he told me that they had the property least,
- 38:02Speaker 4: but he said the downfall is my my cousin farms it,
- 38:06Speaker 4: and man, they just destroy the crops, you know. And
- 38:08Speaker 4: he's like, they're snot shooting, No, deer and they just
- 38:10Speaker 4: keep people off. And I was like, I'll shoot the deer.
- 38:17Speaker 4: And a year or fast forward to this spring, he
- 38:21Speaker 4: come in town and was like, hey, you know it's yours.
- 38:27Speaker 4: I'm gonna let you have it. He said, just under
- 38:30Speaker 4: one uh, you know, under one term, like you've got
- 38:33Speaker 4: to promise me number one you'll shoot some dose and
- 38:36Speaker 4: number two you'll give me some deer Meat's the old
- 38:40Speaker 4: school stuff you don't ever hear about.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I was.
- 38:47Speaker 4: I was all for it. Man. There's a I got
- 38:49Speaker 4: one other guy on there that's a client. He technically
- 38:53Speaker 4: lives on the property. He rantled on the property. And
- 38:56Speaker 4: that was another stipulation that the owner said, you know,
- 38:59Speaker 4: you can do what you want with it, but it
- 39:01Speaker 4: would make me happy and everybody happy if if Michael
- 39:05Speaker 4: could get in on the leash just because he lives there.
- 39:09Speaker 4: And I let him in and that secured the least
- 39:12Speaker 4: for five years for me. So and it was just
- 39:17Speaker 4: a no brainer.
- 39:18Speaker 1: Yeah, man, that's cool.
- 39:19Speaker 4: And so.
- 39:22Speaker 2: You know, this sounded like a golden opportunity. And now
- 39:25Speaker 2: it's like completely switching gears to have a farm locked
- 39:28Speaker 2: up for that long. But you know, this cold, this
- 39:32Speaker 2: most recent cold fronts when you connected with him, and
- 39:34Speaker 2: did you use a stick bow?
- 39:36Speaker 4: Yeah, I killed him with a long bow.
- 39:37Speaker 2: Okay, so you're stick bow hunting with a long you know,
- 39:41Speaker 2: traditional archery. Cold front early October. What was your game
- 39:46Speaker 2: plan going into the hunt?
- 39:48Speaker 4: You know it was. It was really weird because I
- 39:51Speaker 4: couldn't get on the lease until October first, because their
- 39:56Speaker 4: contract with the outfitter didn't run out to the last
- 39:58Speaker 4: day of September. But I called this piece of property
- 40:03Speaker 4: the homestead, like if you ever look at it, and
- 40:06Speaker 4: it's it's actually the house that my least partner lives in,
- 40:09Speaker 4: and it's tuck back in off the road. And he
- 40:12Speaker 4: was like, man, you should just put some cameras in
- 40:14Speaker 4: my yard, he said, because I see these deer and
- 40:17Speaker 4: they found like one hundred and sixty five inch side
- 40:19Speaker 4: sheds in his yard last year. And so I did,
- 40:24Speaker 4: and I've had my two biggest deer all season in
- 40:27Speaker 4: his yard. The lease is in corn and so October first,
- 40:34Speaker 4: which was I think two wednesdays ago, I took off
- 40:37Speaker 4: and took a handful of cameras out. I already you know,
- 40:41Speaker 4: had some pins dropped and I'm used to you know,
- 40:45Speaker 4: five ten thousand acres and this was two hundred and
- 40:48Speaker 4: fifty acres. Like I, I picked it. I picked the
- 40:50Speaker 4: areas I want. I picked over pretty good, and it
- 40:56Speaker 4: it didn't take long. I mean, the first night I
- 40:58Speaker 4: put my cameras out, I had the deer I would kill.
- 41:03Speaker 4: And everybody knows my standards have never been too awful.
- 41:07Speaker 1: High, not wrong with that.
- 41:10Speaker 4: So I had, you know, probably six deer that I
- 41:15Speaker 4: would shoot, and two of them are really good deer,
- 41:18Speaker 4: one of them being fully mature, you know, five plus
- 41:21Speaker 4: probably one hundred and sixty inch deer. But farm lace horrible.
- 41:26Speaker 4: You know, it's primarily an evening spot. I mainly I
- 41:31Speaker 4: got two hundred and fifty acres, but I only got
- 41:33Speaker 4: seventy acres of woods that type of scenario. But man,
- 41:38Speaker 4: I just I was getting pictures of bucks. It was
- 41:41Speaker 4: very it was just very obvious to me what they
- 41:43Speaker 4: were doing. I knew about where they were betting. You know,
- 41:46Speaker 4: I'm I'm real huge on pinpointing exact betting down. I
- 41:53Speaker 4: think it's a lot harder to do than what people say.
- 41:56Speaker 4: But I know a general idea where they were betting,
- 41:59Speaker 4: and I definitely knew they were you know, they were
- 42:01Speaker 4: going to head down to that corn and then they
- 42:05Speaker 4: just shelled the corn about four days started shelling it
- 42:09Speaker 4: about four days before the code front. Mm hm yes.
- 42:14Speaker 4: And I had a little field. It was previously planted
- 42:19Speaker 4: in a food plot and they just they bushedogged it
- 42:21Speaker 4: last year and' pray two or three acres and just
- 42:27Speaker 4: let you know, just littered with scrapes, tattooed with scrapes,
- 42:31Speaker 4: you know, just all kinds of bucks on on it
- 42:34Speaker 4: and lots of white oaks. And I literally just put
- 42:39Speaker 4: a camera on a scrape and I could tell, you know,
- 42:43Speaker 4: just by looking at my phone, you know, the deer
- 42:45Speaker 4: were going to come down the ridge and walk down
- 42:49Speaker 4: the edge of the field and hit this drainage and
- 42:51Speaker 4: go out to the agfield. And then when I put
- 42:54Speaker 4: that camera there, it's just it lit up NonStop from
- 42:59Speaker 4: morning talk all night. And I just needed a code front, man,
- 43:06Speaker 4: just needed a north.
- 43:07Speaker 2: Wind, north wind in a cold front. So you get
- 43:10Speaker 2: the north wind in the cold front. Did you already
- 43:11Speaker 2: have that set already hung or was it you know
- 43:14Speaker 2: you had to already pinned a tree? What was that
- 43:16Speaker 2: process like going into to make the move?
- 43:20Speaker 4: Man? I drove my truck back there, and you know,
- 43:24Speaker 4: it's something that I've never really done, but it's common
- 43:28Speaker 4: sense that if you can drive somewhere, it's I would
- 43:32Speaker 4: rather drive past the deer than walk past the deer. Yeah,
- 43:35Speaker 4: I just drove back to the field man and kind
- 43:38Speaker 4: of walked it, and I picked out a couple of
- 43:40Speaker 4: different trees. You could you can only hunt it on
- 43:43Speaker 4: a north wind, just the way it laid. And I
- 43:47Speaker 4: picked out a perfect black walnut tree right on the
- 43:50Speaker 4: edge of the field man, and it was literally right
- 43:54Speaker 4: there where I knew that they would funnel down through
- 43:56Speaker 4: and the colde front end. I accessed it from about
- 43:59Speaker 4: nine hundred yards and come in the backside and did
- 44:02Speaker 4: a hanging hunt, and man, they just they piled in
- 44:07Speaker 4: there on me. I don't know if you've seen the story,
- 44:09Speaker 4: but it was I did look crazy. I think I
- 44:12Speaker 4: seen six poping youngs from one thirty to probably one sixty.
- 44:21Speaker 4: I've seen the biggest year I had on camera, and everybody,
- 44:24Speaker 4: you know, I'm sure everybody's like, man, I can't believe
- 44:26Speaker 4: you didn't wait wait for that. But when you got
- 44:29Speaker 4: a one hundred and thirty five hundred and forty inch
- 44:31Speaker 4: deer in front of you with it with a stick bow,
- 44:34Speaker 4: it's kind of hard to you know, let him walk.
- 44:46Speaker 1: So how far was the shot?
- 44:49Speaker 4: I ended up killing him at thirty? They come out
- 44:54Speaker 4: so early, man, that dear come out like an hour
- 44:57Speaker 4: and a half before dark. And you know, they slowly
- 45:02Speaker 4: started making their way and I'd say it was around
- 45:04Speaker 4: six o'clock. He made it almost right to the base
- 45:08Speaker 4: of the tree. He was in yards from me, and
- 45:10Speaker 4: I had a dough. She wasn't blown at me, she
- 45:13Speaker 4: was blowing something a couple hundred yards down towards the field,
- 45:16Speaker 4: you know, and just had all the deer on hyler.
- 45:20Speaker 4: And all I needed him to do was turn broadside.
- 45:24Speaker 4: And he he turned and kind of went to take
- 45:26Speaker 4: a couple of steps, not to leave, just to kind
- 45:28Speaker 4: of meal around. And he was so close to me
- 45:31Speaker 4: that he he could hear he heard me draw my
- 45:33Speaker 4: bow back mm hm, and so he like kind of,
- 45:38Speaker 4: you know, kind of tucked his rear end and trotted
- 45:40Speaker 4: off twenty yards and stopped and looked, looked around and
- 45:43Speaker 4: start feeding.
- 45:44Speaker 1: You were what were they feeding?
- 45:46Speaker 4: It? Just grass, just like a grass field with clover
- 45:50Speaker 4: and weeds in it.
- 45:51Speaker 2: Okay, so you know, and they were there were so
- 45:55Speaker 2: just so people can get a picture in their mind,
- 45:56Speaker 2: they came out of the betting I were assuming they
- 45:59Speaker 2: were betted in the tim based off kind of what okay,
- 46:01Speaker 2: so better than the timber transitioned into you know, like
- 46:04Speaker 2: a general millionairea where there's some clover, some different weezer
- 46:07Speaker 2: munching on. And then your anticipation was that we're going
- 46:10Speaker 2: to head to the big ag field after that or
- 46:13Speaker 2: is that not not quite accurate?
- 46:15Speaker 4: No, that's exactly accurate. And the way that the ridge
- 46:19Speaker 4: laid with the field on top and the drainage, I
- 46:23Speaker 4: typically always have good luck with deer kind of following
- 46:28Speaker 4: that drainage, you know, And I just just guess, you know,
- 46:32Speaker 4: I just figured that's the direction they would go other
- 46:35Speaker 4: than other ways around the ridge. It just worked perfect.
- 46:40Speaker 4: That's the every deer that was in the field was
- 46:44Speaker 4: coming by me, like in the fifteen yards, and it's
- 46:49Speaker 4: it's a pretty it was a pretty good sized field,
- 46:53Speaker 4: you know, two or three acres. But when that deer spooked,
- 46:57Speaker 4: he didn't, I mean it didn't really spook him. I
- 46:59Speaker 4: guess it's artolding. And then eventually more and more deer
- 47:05Speaker 4: kept feeding past, and it's like he knew, you know,
- 47:09Speaker 4: not to come right to the base of the tree,
- 47:11Speaker 4: so he he kind of come by right. I guess
- 47:14Speaker 4: that's just right around thirty yards, not in any hurry,
- 47:17Speaker 4: and I just smoked him, man, hitting back the lungs,
- 47:22Speaker 4: and he'd done some car wheels in the field and
- 47:25Speaker 4: died right from.
- 47:26Speaker 2: Man, that's cool, man, congratulations. I think real quick too.
- 47:32Speaker 2: You mentioned you could only hunt on a north wind.
- 47:34Speaker 2: Quickly paint that picture for people who might want to
- 47:37Speaker 2: understand what that looks like. So when they're trying to
- 47:40Speaker 2: identify a similar spot, you know, for this next cold
- 47:43Speaker 2: front to where your scent.
- 47:45Speaker 1: Was blown, where he had low odds of getting busted.
- 47:48Speaker 4: So my only access is through the ackfield. And you know,
- 47:54Speaker 4: deer there opposite than us. There there are our afternoons
- 47:59Speaker 4: or there mornings, and our mornings are there afternoons. And
- 48:04Speaker 4: it was very obvious, you know, the deer are not
- 48:06Speaker 4: going to bed in the field. There may be a
- 48:09Speaker 4: couple of ditches that they could probably hide in, but
- 48:12Speaker 4: they were just going to be back up in the timber.
- 48:14Speaker 4: And there it's big timber, probably three to four thousand
- 48:19Speaker 4: acres there, but I only got like a seventy acre
- 48:22Speaker 4: parcel of it, and there's a probably a twenty acre
- 48:27Speaker 4: lake on the northeast side. And so the side that
- 48:31Speaker 4: I was setting on on the ridge, I had the
- 48:35Speaker 4: lake to my right that which created a natural funnel,
- 48:38Speaker 4: but a big funnel. I'm talking from me to the
- 48:40Speaker 4: lake was four hundred yards, but it was still a funnel. Yeah,
- 48:43Speaker 4: But in between me and the lake was a drainage.
- 48:47Speaker 4: So all the deer, you know, it was obvious. They
- 48:49Speaker 4: all come down to tea in the evening and they're
- 48:51Speaker 4: there all night, and then they head back up into
- 48:54Speaker 4: the hills to bed. And I didn't I didn't want
- 48:58Speaker 4: to be real far back up in the heels. I
- 49:02Speaker 4: just don't want to speak, no, dear. I had a couple
- 49:04Speaker 4: of general ideas where I thought they would be bedding,
- 49:06Speaker 4: and I feel like I'm pretty close. I'm not saying
- 49:10Speaker 4: they were bedding right there under that tree, but you know,
- 49:13Speaker 4: back there on that twenty acres or so, some of
- 49:15Speaker 4: the bucks would be bedded, and I just set up
- 49:18Speaker 4: accordingly off of it.
- 49:20Speaker 2: So looking into the future here pretending you didn't shoot
- 49:24Speaker 2: this buck, So like looking in the future here. October
- 49:30Speaker 2: fifteenth to call out October twenty second, it looks like
- 49:34Speaker 2: temperatures are going to be pretty stable, at least here
- 49:37Speaker 2: in Illinois where I'm looking for someone that is going
- 49:40Speaker 2: to potentially get some time to go hunt. The following
- 49:43Speaker 2: weekend here looks like it's going to be not the
- 49:46Speaker 2: best hunting conditions. What would you tell someone to key
- 49:49Speaker 2: in on and pay attention to if they have the
- 49:51Speaker 2: weekend they want to go hunting, What either food source
- 49:55Speaker 2: or train future should they key in on.
- 49:57Speaker 4: In your opinion, I've always, always and still I would
- 50:06Speaker 4: rather go down and swinging on it ear than than
- 50:09Speaker 4: you know, than to just sat there to strike out.
- 50:12Speaker 4: But I really feel like, no matter where you're hunting
- 50:16Speaker 4: on private or public land, man, it's all about the
- 50:19Speaker 4: weather fronts, especially this time of year. You know. I
- 50:24Speaker 4: see guys out there. I don't know if they're trying
- 50:26Speaker 4: to prove a point or nothing against them, but they're
- 50:29Speaker 4: just pound in it like right now. But if I
- 50:35Speaker 4: was somebody, I would definitely be waiting for like a
- 50:39Speaker 4: fifteen to twenty degrees cooler temperatures, some kind of front,
- 50:46Speaker 4: and if you're hunting in the morning, I would be
- 50:49Speaker 4: somewhere close to that you think they're bedding, and in
- 50:53Speaker 4: the evening, I would probably be in the same general
- 50:55Speaker 4: area because I don't really think they're going to get
- 50:57Speaker 4: up and you know, will before were you know, dark
- 51:02Speaker 4: and bling around.
- 51:04Speaker 2: If someone said, okay, yep, I don't I don't want
- 51:07Speaker 2: to necessarily burn some hunts on this, but I'm going
- 51:09Speaker 2: to have some free time.
- 51:11Speaker 1: I want a speed scalt.
- 51:12Speaker 2: What what would you say for the fifteenth or the
- 51:14Speaker 2: twenty second, what do they need to specifically be looking
- 51:17Speaker 2: for to prepare for the next cold front.
- 51:21Speaker 4: I would I'll always start at the food sources, just
- 51:23Speaker 4: because it's the easiest thing to find, you, you know,
- 51:26Speaker 4: and a deer, I think there's over six hundred things
- 51:29Speaker 4: in their digest. They can really eat anything. But if
- 51:32Speaker 4: there's a shield cornfield down there, more than likely that's
- 51:36Speaker 4: going to be their destination, or rather it's a food
- 51:40Speaker 4: plot or a bait pile. I would think that, you know,
- 51:45Speaker 4: that's going to be what you won't want to focus
- 51:46Speaker 4: in on. And I'm not saying I wouldn't hunt the morning,
- 51:50Speaker 4: but right now it really is more of an evening game,
- 51:54Speaker 4: and you know, the closer that we get to the rut.
- 51:59Speaker 4: The way that I've always you know, could tell when
- 52:03Speaker 4: things were starting to shift is like all my my
- 52:06Speaker 4: bigger buck pictures, my more mature deer, like three years
- 52:10Speaker 4: old and up. Most of them, if they're in the daylight,
- 52:13Speaker 4: they're in the evening right now. And I feel like
- 52:17Speaker 4: that's probably how most people are. I'm not saying that
- 52:20Speaker 4: they don't get morning pictures, but when you kind of
- 52:22Speaker 4: see that kind of level out or change, you know,
- 52:26Speaker 4: where you start getting just as many morning pictures as
- 52:30Speaker 4: you do evening, or you start to get a little
- 52:32Speaker 4: bit more. It's probably definitely getting to be a little
- 52:37Speaker 4: better time to start hunting. But I would definitely get
- 52:39Speaker 4: out there and scout, start at the food sources. I
- 52:45Speaker 4: probably wouldn't penetrate too deep, depend on where I was
- 52:48Speaker 4: at versus private or public. But I mean, we got
- 52:52Speaker 4: such a we got pretty much the whole month of
- 52:55Speaker 4: October November, which is you know, the apex of deer hunting, December,
- 53:00Speaker 4: and a little bit of January.
- 53:03Speaker 1: It's a marathon. It's a marathon.
- 53:05Speaker 7: I mean, it really never ends.
- 53:07Speaker 4: But I was just trying to hang out around the
- 53:09Speaker 4: food and you know, and if you're if you were
- 53:12Speaker 4: really good. If you had a lot of confidence, you know,
- 53:16Speaker 4: you might want to try I poke around some betting.
- 53:18Speaker 4: I just the older I get, and you know, like
- 53:21Speaker 4: on this on this private man, I just I don't
- 53:25Speaker 4: want to on the public if I bump the deer,
- 53:27Speaker 4: I could move on to the next one, or I
- 53:29Speaker 4: could fall, or I could follow him around. I've always
- 53:32Speaker 4: done that, but now you know, like my back portal
- 53:34Speaker 4: where one hundred percent of my deer betting is seventy acres,
- 53:40Speaker 4: I don't want to put I don't want to push
- 53:41Speaker 4: them off where they spend half of you know, all
- 53:44Speaker 4: their daytime activity.
- 53:45Speaker 2: Yeah, well no that I think that's great advice for
- 53:48Speaker 2: anyone here that's trying to develop a game plan. Congratulations
- 53:51Speaker 2: once again. Are you running a big buck fade at
- 53:55Speaker 2: the barber shop or if people need a big buck
- 53:58Speaker 2: fade where they get a haircut, they shoot a where
- 54:00Speaker 2: do they go?
- 54:02Speaker 4: Yeah, come in here, We'll put BBD in the cyr.
- 54:06Speaker 4: I'll try do that for free.
- 54:08Speaker 2: First person to get a big buck down fade gets
- 54:12Speaker 2: a free haircut where what is your barbershop's name? So
- 54:14Speaker 2: is case someone's there and they want to get a
- 54:16Speaker 2: big buck haircut.
- 54:17Speaker 4: It's a Seabury barber shop. It's a Western Kentucky It's
- 54:21Speaker 4: actually in Seabury, Kentucky. And I will have part of
- 54:25Speaker 4: this barber shop by next season. I will have it
- 54:29Speaker 4: ready for like an Airbnb slash hunting camp style. I
- 54:35Speaker 4: got a totally separate room on the other side that
- 54:38Speaker 4: has its own entrance, and I do have a shower
- 54:42Speaker 4: and a toilet in here, so it'll be fully ready
- 54:47Speaker 4: for all the deer hunters. Love it.
- 54:50Speaker 1: Congratulations again, Josh, Thank you sir.
- 54:53Speaker 2: All right, Next up on the line, we have Chris
- 54:55Speaker 2: Jones from Illinois, and I told you I was gonna
- 54:59Speaker 2: put you on the spot. What year do you think
- 55:03Speaker 2: the most amount of bucks or excuse me, the most
- 55:05Speaker 2: amount of deer were tagged in the state of Illinois.
- 55:08Speaker 1: What year? And I can give you a hand if
- 55:10Speaker 1: you need one.
- 55:12Speaker 2: Oh gosh, it's got to be in the two thousands.
- 55:16Speaker 1: You're you're head in the right direction.
- 55:18Speaker 2: Yes, uh, two thousand, I'm going out on a limb here.
- 55:23Speaker 2: Two thousand and three, that's a good guess. It was
- 55:26Speaker 2: actually two thousand and seven. There was one hundred and
- 55:28Speaker 2: ninety nine thousand, seven hundred and five deer shot in
- 55:31Speaker 2: the state of Illinois that year, and then twenty twenty
- 55:33Speaker 2: four it was one hundred and fifty five thousand for reference,
- 55:35Speaker 2: So f fun little fact for everyone out there. How's
- 55:40Speaker 2: the deer wood's been here in the last week. We're
- 55:42Speaker 2: kind of on the back end of that first cold front.
- 55:44Speaker 2: Everyone was, you know, greatly excited about how has the
- 55:47Speaker 2: movement been for you? Yeah, it's definitely picked up the
- 55:49Speaker 2: last two days there. They hit greens yesterday and how
- 55:55Speaker 2: did one of the shooters come in at like ten thirty,
- 55:58Speaker 2: which was kind of you know that deer doesn't normally
- 56:02Speaker 2: daylight until late season or the rut, but we're guessing
- 56:07Speaker 2: he's like eight and he hasn't. He showed up twice
- 56:11Speaker 2: the night before moved in, and then yesterday I'm like, man,
- 56:15Speaker 2: I think that he's just bedded too close and I
- 56:18Speaker 2: didn't feel like risking it, so I didn't go in there.
- 56:20Speaker 2: I went to another farm just to make an observation set.
- 56:22Speaker 2: But deer definitely starting to move there. On acorns, we're
- 56:26Speaker 2: starting to get a lot more scrape activity. I think
- 56:28Speaker 2: we've got like ten or twelve cell cameras we're gonna
- 56:30Speaker 2: put out this weekend. Now that the crops are coming out,
- 56:33Speaker 2: we can get the e bikes and canm around to
- 56:36Speaker 2: find some more scrapes. But definitely better than it had been,
- 56:40Speaker 2: but not great. It's still early October. Had we not
- 56:45Speaker 2: got that cold front, it'd be the same old October lowl.
- 56:48Speaker 2: You know, we're not seeing nothing, you know, But yeah,
- 56:51Speaker 2: that's I feel like it's always a balance of having
- 56:56Speaker 2: realistic expectations when we get an early cold front.
- 56:58Speaker 1: Like if you're if you're in the fringe of the game, it.
- 57:01Speaker 2: Could be really good, but if you still kind of
- 57:02Speaker 2: feel you're waiting on deer to shift around, it might
- 57:05Speaker 2: not feel as amazing as is maybe what it should
- 57:08Speaker 2: feel like.
- 57:09Speaker 1: Or if you go on Instagram and see people killing deer,
- 57:10Speaker 1: you're like, oh.
- 57:11Speaker 2: Man, it didn't happen for me on this front. What
- 57:15Speaker 2: have you been seeing? As far as you're you're in
- 57:17Speaker 2: farm country in Illinois, are what percentage if you had
- 57:22Speaker 2: a guess of corn and beans that are out? I mean,
- 57:25Speaker 2: I know everyone's working really hard to get beans out.
- 57:28Speaker 2: What would you say as terms of the amount of
- 57:31Speaker 2: crops out right now, I'd say we're probably forty percent
- 57:34Speaker 2: of our corn crop out and eighty percent beans. That's
- 57:38Speaker 2: actually seem As we get off of this, I'm gonna
- 57:40Speaker 2: jump back in the combine. Think we've got about fourteen
- 57:42Speaker 2: hundred acres of beans left, so we should finish up
- 57:45Speaker 2: next three or four days, fingers crossed. A lot of
- 57:50Speaker 2: crop is coming out. You know, we when right before
- 57:52Speaker 2: this cold front we got a little shot of.
- 57:53Speaker 1: Rain and.
- 57:57Speaker 2: I don't know half inch of it. Maybe that afternoon
- 57:59Speaker 2: we were back to cutting beans. You know, that's how
- 58:02Speaker 2: dry it is. So a lot of it's coming out
- 58:06Speaker 2: super fast right now. With it being so dry, crops
- 58:12Speaker 2: getting out. You mentioned the hit green last night still acorns.
- 58:16Speaker 2: Has anything shifted from what your plan would have been
- 58:20Speaker 2: if we would have had normal rainfalls throughout August and
- 58:22Speaker 2: September to where it is today because of maybe food
- 58:26Speaker 2: plots are struggling. You know a lot of variables have
- 58:29Speaker 2: maybe changed from what the inititional plan would have been
- 58:32Speaker 2: for a lot of folks. What's your opinion on that.
- 58:35Speaker 2: I would have still focused on the food plots on
- 58:38Speaker 2: a cold front like this. On the greens, some are struggling.
- 58:41Speaker 2: I know, you know me and you talk quite often.
- 58:43Speaker 2: I've got some food plots that are just phenomenal. Right now,
- 58:47Speaker 2: they've caught a couple of rains and then the stuff
- 58:48Speaker 2: that we spray on them. But there's the acorn crop
- 58:52Speaker 2: this year is insane. I mean they are everywhere, just
- 58:56Speaker 2: from all the spring rain that we got. But I
- 58:59Speaker 2: don't know, I don't think that I would have done
- 59:00Speaker 2: anything differently. I'm a field edge hunter, you know. I
- 59:04Speaker 2: like being on the edge, and I like being on
- 59:06Speaker 2: a food plot. You know, we're the tractors running constantly
- 59:08Speaker 2: all year planning food plots and spraying, and I don't know,
- 59:11Speaker 2: I just like looking at them, you know, so maybethetically beautiful.
- 59:16Speaker 2: Look at freaking food plots. Well, they are fun to
- 59:21Speaker 2: look at, they're fun to hunt. You get to see
- 59:23Speaker 2: deer and and it's really special when they do what
- 59:25Speaker 2: they're supposed to. So with your plan coming up here,
- 59:29Speaker 2: so you know, pretending it's October fifteenth right now, then
- 59:33Speaker 2: maybe someone was busy that the weekend we're going into.
- 59:36Speaker 1: But it would have been the weekend as before.
- 59:38Speaker 2: As this goes live, For someone that is still struggling
- 59:41Speaker 2: or trying to find some deer or waiting for deer
- 59:43Speaker 2: to shift, what would you say for them if they
- 59:45Speaker 2: have five cameras, ten cameras, three cameras one camera to
- 59:49Speaker 2: go out and scout, like what are you keen in
- 59:52Speaker 2: on here this weekend to get set up for potentially
- 59:54Speaker 2: the next cold front or better days ahead of us.
- 59:57Speaker 2: Every property that I have permission to be on, I'm
- 59:59Speaker 2: checking all those right now to see if the farmer
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: has gotten the crop out. If so, I'm going in.
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: I'm juicing up a scrape that's already been started and
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: hanging a camera on it, and I'm gonna let her
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: rip till the end of the month, and then after that,
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: I'm jumping in a fence row whenever we start seeing
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: some rut activity, I'm jumping in fence row and I'm camping.
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: As far as what you've seen over the years from
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: running cameras, you know, knowing from the fifteenth to the
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: twenty second, are you anticipating a deer to show back up?
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: One to pop up out of nowhere? You know, like
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: you know, grow out of the ground. I mean, it
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: can be an exciting time of year to be hanging
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: cameras and check out absolutely like you know this time
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: of the year, after they shed their velvet, we'll have
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: seven eight target bucks that were what we're king in on.
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: Typically we get those, we typically harvest those.
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: There's usually probably that many, if not more, that are
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: giving bucks bonus bucks that we never even knew existed.
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: Last year, we shot at one to eighty that we
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: never even knew that where the deer was. And we
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: got to look and we're like, where is this deer
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: even living at. He was in the middle of a
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: five hundred acre cornfield that had a pond in it
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: with a tree line that he could come easy in
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: and easy out. Nobody detected him. A lot of people
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: don't look at those farms. You know, this is fence
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: rowing crick system country. That's where we're hunting. And everybody
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: overlooks these fence rows during the rut and it's like,
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: you know, we had one guy a couple of years
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: ago from Maine, not in the big woods, and I
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: put him in this little five acre fence row and
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: he's like, you're seriously putting me here. I paid money
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: to hunt this, and I'm like, just.
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: Just give me.
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: Today ends up killing a one sixty biggest deer that
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: he's ever seen in his life, and saw like twenty
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: five deer that day, so that's what I'm looking for
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: right now. But if I was a guy that didn't
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: have a target buck on camera right now, I would
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: be finding scrapes and getting.
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: It on there.
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's that's exactly what my plans are
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: this weekend, as well as to go out and look
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: for sign hang cameras on scrapes. I've poked around here
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: a little bit this week from getting back from my
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: trip and dude finding finding some of those first scrapes
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: that got worked up. That it just it puts me
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: in the mood because it's like, oh man, they're deer
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: doing what.
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: They're supposed to. It's getting exciting.
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: Those those scrapes and cameras are such a huge part
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: of seeing what's going on, especially in farm country and
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: probably really anywhere across the country. I mean, it's just
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: a great intel hub to develop a plan. One one
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: thing that I feel like a lot of people have
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: an opinion on this and I want to get yours
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: really quickly, is you get a big buck on a
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: scrape in the middle of the night.
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: Are you encouraged or discouraged.
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: I'm encouraged because in the next two or three days
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: he's going to daylight. So if the if the wind's right,
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: I'll set on it for three days, you know, whil
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: I've done it four days and we've and we've killed
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: the deer, you know, but he's closed. If he's there
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: in the middle night, he's close. And especially if there's
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: a cold front coming in, you know, you definitely better
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: be on that and you're probably going to kill him.
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: On that's great.
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: Yeah, what about So we're looking here in the extended forecast,
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: it looks like it's going to be not anything special
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: here for the next seven days. What is your outlook
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: regarding that? On a scale one to ten, ten being
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: it's going to be the best week of the year,
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: one being absolutely terrible. So where where does the fall
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: between one and ten? Knowing conditions aren't going to be
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: anything exceptional, but it is an exciting time. I'm going
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: to say one, I'm not too I'm not too excited
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: about it.
- 1:03:39Speaker 5: And I don't know if that's because I'm.
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: Still good beans to cut, you know. I was jacked up,
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: you know.
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: My wife last night she's like, Hey, we need to
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: go do this, and I'm like no, I'm like, it's
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: the coldest evening of the year. So far I'm hunting.
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: I was like, call my mom, have her give you
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: a riodte or something, grab the kids, and I was like,
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: I got to get back in the combine for the
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: next you know, five six days or whatever. So I'm
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: not really too jacked up this week. I just I
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: want to find some more scrape just get cameras on them.
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: Next weekend looks like we're gonna dip back down in
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: the low seventies, and then here on out from then,
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: it looks like we're gonna stay cool, So main focus,
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: get the beans out. Then we'll focus the rest of
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: the time on the deer. And uh, I think that
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: we're going to be surprised what deer show up on
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: cameras this year, you know, the deer that we didn't
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: know just for the simple fact of this spring was
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: so wet and all the way up. You know, most
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: of the summer antler growth was really great. Like you know,
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: I've sent you a lot of pictures. We've found a
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: lot of big deer this year. Each d We've not
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: been hit too hard with that. I'm sure we've found
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: some dead deer in the fields, but other than that,
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: I've not found any others and and some other farmers
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: i've spoke to have found a few, but I think
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: that we're going to be really surprised what's gonna show
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: up on some of these scrapes. You know what it's
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: like trying to find deer with the cornst Mu's impossible.
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: The good Yeah, there's there's a great shift.
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: So your strategy is more scouting over the next seven
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: days to get prepared for the next front. Be really
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: keyed in on what bucks are showing up and what's
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: sticking around. And uh yeah, I think I was not
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: expecting to one. So I really appreciate the cancer. I'm
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: telling us what you think here, I mean this week,
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: other than getting the cameras on on new scrapes, other
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: than I could care less what the deer are doing
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: right now, you know, like as many food plots as
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: we plant.
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: Dude, I'm a late season hunter.
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: I want I just want to camp out in a
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: redneck or whatever and just watch them. I mean, that's
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: the funnest time of the year for me, especially in
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: that time you're getting Arctic blasts essentially, and they're just
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: hammering him and it's awesome to sit in a food
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: put watch forty deer and wait for a shooter to
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: come in and then get upset because you can't get
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: a shot off on him because there's so many does looking,
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: you know, around, so many eyes but I don't know,
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: scrape buttons a lot of fun too. It can just
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: it's super frustrating. Yeah, well to find the scrapes, hang
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: some cameras, maybe throw us it.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: Good luck the rest of the season.
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: Hopefully the rest of Harvest goes really smooth for you guys,
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: and I really appreciate it, and good luck.
- 1:06:15Speaker 5: Appreciate it.
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: Dude, there, you guys have I hope you guys enjoyed
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: this week's episode of Rough Fresh. I want to say
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: thanks to Hunter, Rob and Josh and Chris forgiving their updates, and.
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: I hope you guys have a great week.
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: Hopefully you get an opportunity, opportunity to scout or keep
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: tabs on what's going on and prepare for this next
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: cold front, or if you have some time, go out
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: and hunt based off some of the intel that you
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: guys received here today. Until next time, We'll see you
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: next week on Rough Fresh. See you
