- 0:01Well, welcome in to another exciting episode of The Scene.
- 0:04I am your host, Bubba Starts, and with me today is singer, songwriter and mobile barber, Lucas
- 0:08Minor.
- 0:09Lucas, welcome to the show, brother.
- 0:10What's up, brother?
- 0:11How's it going?
- 0:12It's going great, man.
- 0:13It's going great.
- 0:14Pleasure to connect with you here and, kinda hear a little bit of your story off camera, and
- 0:19and we did get to speak a little bit last week.
- 0:21But, glad to have you here on the show.
- 0:23I I'd like to give you a chance to just kinda tell everybody who you are and a little bit
- 0:27about what you do, and then we're gonna talk about that new song and album you got coming
- 0:30out.
- 0:31Yes, sir.
- 0:32I'm Lucas Minor, mobile barber, songwriter, singer, all the things, producer.
- 0:39I got my own independent record label I'm working on getting going.
- 0:44I got a five song EP that just released yesterday called Shape of a Rose.
- 0:48It's, it's really awesome.
- 0:49I got a bunch more songs, but, I just wanted to get something out from my fans, and I connect
- 0:54with you, Bubba.
- 0:55I don't know.
- 0:56Probably a year or so ago, I've been kinda following you and watching, and, I was eager to
- 1:01to reach out, man.
- 1:02You got you got a lot of cool stuff going on.
- 1:05Super grateful.
- 1:05We got the mobile barbershop, though.
- 1:07It's really cool.
- 1:08People can go on to clip caddy.net, and there'll be pictures on there.
- 1:11It's really cool.
- 1:12It's in a ProMaster van, and we got a barbershop on wheels, man.
- 1:17We're the, the Uber Eats of barbering, bro.
- 1:20Oh, that's awesome.
- 1:21And you're serving around the Nashville area.
- 1:23Correct?
- 1:24Yeah.
- 1:24Yeah.
- 1:25We're servicing, Columbia, Tennessee and Spring Hill, Tennessee Wednesday through Saturday.
- 1:31But on Tuesday, we're trying to grow right now.
- 1:33So we're servicing Franklin and Brentwood on Tuesdays, and we're just closed on Sunday,
- 1:37Monday like normal barbershops.
- 1:39That's awesome.
- 1:41I I love that you have such a unique, you know, kinda day job, I guess you would call it.
- 1:46A lot more than that.
- 1:48Like, how invested are you when you speak of it, you say very ours, but are you a, are you a
- 1:53barber that's working for a company, or do you kinda have a stake in the ownership of the
- 1:56vehicle and everything too?
- 1:59So I, I'm not an owner.
- 2:03I'm just owner of the skills, but I am the the glue that holds it together.
- 2:08Like, without me, there wouldn't be a clip caddy.
- 2:10So I'm not, I'm not, like, downing like I just work with a concrete company, and they really
- 2:15believe in me, and they kinda just set me up to do what I wanted to, man.
- 2:19They really, it's crazy.
- 2:20They say that they say that, a stranger will make you rich.
- 2:26I don't know.
- 2:27That makes sense.
- 2:28It makes sense.
- 2:29Well and it's nice to have people out there that believe in you.
- 2:33Were the people who own the concrete company, are they also fans of your music?
- 2:37Yeah.
- 2:37Absolutely.
- 2:38They're fans of whatever I got going.
- 2:40They love me, man.
- 2:40That's, it's pretty cool.
- 2:42They're fans of my music.
- 2:44They're super supportive, and they've really helped me in this journey, man, of, like,
- 2:48trying to change my life, you know, being a being a a nine time loser, being in the pen,
- 2:53addicted to drugs, homelessness, like, like, traumatized little brokenhearted Midwestern
- 2:59boy.
- 3:00You know?
- 3:00And coming down here to the South in Tennessee, it's kinda helped me grow to become a better
- 3:05version of myself.
- 3:06And, on this journey, I've encountered some really cool people that really, really wanna
- 3:10help.
- 3:12Yeah.
- 3:12Incredible parallels between our two lives.
- 3:15And even now, where we're both kind of on this, you know, on a straighter, narrower path than
- 3:22we ever have been and seeing the successes of all of those things.
- 3:26I'm I'm a songwriter myself, Lucas, and, you know, now my my day job, I guess, is is doing
- 3:33this.
- 3:34Right?
- 3:34Is running this podcast network and continuing to find other avenues inside of the media space
- 3:41not just help artists, but you know, and not just make a name for myself, but to help
- 3:46artists like you that are out there grinding.
- 3:49And it's just such a tough gig if you don't have other people believing in you.
- 3:54You know?
- 3:54So shout out to your to your backers and to these, people that have been supporting you,
- 4:00and you can feel free to shout them out too.
- 4:02You never know who's listening.
- 4:03I need some concrete work done in Tennessee.
- 4:05Yeah.
- 4:05H and J Concrete, man.
- 4:06They're the best in the business.
- 4:08H H and J Concrete.
- 4:10Yep.
- 4:11Really great people.
- 4:13Awesome, Lucas.
- 4:14Well, you said you just released this EP, The Shape of a Rose.
- 4:18Tell us about the what kind of music that you're writing and what this EP kinda sounds
- 4:22like.
- 4:24So it's pretty cool.
- 4:26So I kinda have, like, the, like, the blues deep in my soul, like, you know, soul music,
- 4:32and I love country music.
- 4:34So it's kind of it's country, vibe, but, you know, I like the I like the you're gonna hear a
- 4:40lot of you're gonna hear some hip hop influence in there.
- 4:42You're gonna hear a little bit of, everything in my music.
- 4:47So my favorite song on there is actually the song the name of the the EP, Shape of a Rose.
- 4:52But there's a wide variety of stuff, and there's one song in there about drinking beer
- 4:56and kicking ass, bro.
- 4:57You know?
- 4:58And, there's a little bit of everything on there.
- 5:00So just the five songs, I got another song called Excellent Choice.
- 5:03It's about how, like, you know, you could be on your journey and and, like, can't find anybody
- 5:09who, like, believes in you or nor supports you, but there's that one person, man, and he
- 5:14believes in everything you do.
- 5:16And, he tells you everything's an excellent choice.
- 5:19You know?
- 5:19Sometimes he's just a drunk guy.
- 5:21You know what I mean?
- 5:22Yeah.
- 5:23Yeah.
- 5:24So I wrote about this dude, and, yes, sometimes they have a brown bag in their hand.
- 5:29You know?
- 5:31Yeah.
- 5:32Alright.
- 5:32The the saints come in all shapes and forms, along this path that we've walked.
- 5:37And, no doubt, just because someone in the throes of addiction doesn't mean they're gonna
- 5:43tell you something that doesn't change your life.
- 5:45Yeah.
- 5:46Yeah.
- 5:46You're right.
- 5:47You're right.
- 5:48And it's just so easy just to discredit what they're saying.
- 5:51But truth be told, like, I found that a lot of times, those people will be the most honest.
- 5:56They got nothing to hide.
- 5:58They got nothing to hide.
- 6:00Man, Lucas, that reminds me of a story.
- 6:03So along my journey, I ended up as a very young man, 21, 22 years old down on Venice Beach in
- 6:09California right there on the California Coast and, busking every day.
- 6:15And, occasionally, you know, I I'd have a beer when I when I was playing or whatever.
- 6:19Somebody I kinda played in front of the little restaurant there.
- 6:21Shout out to the Venice Bistro.
- 6:23I don't know if it's still called that or if it's even there.
- 6:26But there was a older older gentleman named Abraham, or at least that's what everybody
- 6:33called him.
- 6:34And Abraham come up to me one day totally out of the, like, just out of the blue, And we'd
- 6:39had conversations and things, but just came up to me and was like, god told me he doesn't want
- 6:44you to drink when you sing.
- 6:45And it was just like, okay.
- 6:48You know what I mean?
- 6:48Like, alright, Abraham.
- 6:50See, you know what I mean?
- 6:51Yeah.
- 6:52It it led me to, you know, twenty years later finally kinda waking up to that and being like,
- 6:56you know, I'm not the same person when I'm drinking alcohol.
- 7:01I'm definitely not the same performer as I am.
- 7:04And for whether whether God told him or not, I have to believe that he did because he was
- 7:10right.
- 7:11You know?
- 7:12It's incredible, man.
- 7:13I I love these stories that come from, come from the streets, man.
- 7:18And
- 7:18that's definitely where where you came from.
- 7:20I know you kinda glossed over a little bit of your past.
- 7:25But kinda take us back.
- 7:26How do you feel like your your past and those hard times, how do you feel like that shaped
- 7:31you as a man that you're sitting here with me today?
- 7:35Oh, that's a good that's a that's a good question.
- 7:40So you've been to prison before, and you know how, like, you can't move wrong in there.
- 7:48Like, there's people that will hold you accountable, and a lot of times, they don't
- 7:51have keys in the badge.
- 7:53You know?
- 7:55So, I'll say that in this journey, some of the best people I met were locked up.
- 8:01And, there's some really the really big helpers in my journey.
- 8:04I got one mentor I kinda use now, and he, he had committed murder.
- 8:08And, he's not sorry.
- 8:10He would do it again, but he's a changed man.
- 8:13Like, he it was a justifiable murder, I believe.
- 8:17And I kinda use him as my mentor now.
- 8:19And, he's out and he's done his time.
- 8:22He's he, he wouldn't take anything back neither.
- 8:26He would he would he's he told me, he's like, I I would do it again, you know, the same thing
- 8:29in the same situation.
- 8:30I would do it again.
- 8:31And, you know, I'm not gonna go too deep on the story, but I I believe he's justifiable.
- 8:35And I'm not I'm not a judge or a juror, but, I do know the difference between right and wrong.
- 8:41But he, and he has a different spiritual beliefs that I do, but similar, which is
- 8:50awesome because a lot of those things, they, they kinda come together.
- 8:54And, like, a a lot of times, instead of, you know, just I would let me slow down.
- 8:59I would process things a lot differently if I never went through those things.
- 9:03I would just rush through everything, and I would I wouldn't take the time to actually feel
- 9:08or listen to other people.
- 9:10I never had the opportunity to, find out who I was until I was in a situation where all I had
- 9:16was myself and God.
- 9:19And, it has a way of, you know, the and I'm not saying everybody's journey needs to have
- 9:25prison, but I never had any idea on, like, who I was or how talented I was or creative until
- 9:33all I had was that.
- 9:36And, I'm gonna say it's not easier, to to should go through those changes.
- 9:42It is better, but it is definitely a lot harder, and you could probably relate to that.
- 9:48It's not easy to man, I used to be, like, the worst liar, bro.
- 9:52I would be like, I won't lie about anything, dude.
- 9:55And now I have this hunger for just, like, truth and honesty that I can almost feel when
- 10:02someone's lying to me.
- 10:03You know what I mean?
- 10:04It's tough.
- 10:06It's tough, to not speak out in those moments too because then I might just be called crazy.
- 10:10You know?
- 10:11But, I've never had any type of
- 10:21Yeah.
- 10:21Lucas, you you shared about your time, and I think it's important for people to know that,
- 10:26you know, it ain't just the chains in a penitentiary that keep us shackled.
- 10:30Right?
- 10:31I mean, it can be any kind of addiction that doesn't send you to prison, especially now a
- 10:36lot of our young men addicted to pornography, you know, addicted to substances.
- 10:41A lot of people never make it to prison, but, you know, especially alcoholism is just so
- 10:45rampant in our society.
- 10:47I feel like there's definitely been a shift probably since, you know, 2020, 2021, right,
- 10:51where people are starting to get healthier and and willing to take an honest look at
- 10:56themselves inside of all of those things.
- 10:59But it's it's important to know that, you know, lot of people are are still in chains whether
- 11:05they're in a penitentiary or, you know, locked in a bad relationship.
- 11:09I know we can you you mentioned some some relationship issues of your own, which who
- 11:14hasn't had those.
- 11:17Lucas, what, so how as a songwriter, you know, are your songs I feel like you you really speak
- 11:23from the heart when you talk.
- 11:24Is your songwriting process the same way?
- 11:27Are are you trying to come at the songwriting the same way you come at Life Now with a brutal
- 11:32honesty?
- 11:33Yes.
- 11:34Yes.
- 11:34And I'm glad you brought that up.
- 11:36Absolutely, man.
- 11:37And, this song my favorite song on the EP is called Excellent Choice.
- 11:41Wait.
- 11:42I mean, second favorite.
- 11:43Whatever.
- 11:45But, this song is vulnerable, man.
- 11:48It's it is vulnerable, and it's the most it might be the most vulnerable I've ever been
- 11:52publicly.
- 11:54And I did it in a song form.
- 11:55But, yeah, it's how I write, man.
- 11:56I like to take those raw emotions and put them on paper, bro.
- 12:02I got I got some good songwriting content now with this breakup I'm going through, man.
- 12:07Man.
- 12:09And I think that's where the best music comes from is those raw emotions.
- 12:12I mean, I'm I don't write much of the I'm not much of the, like, party songwriter.
- 12:17I mean, I got one song about kicking ass and drinking beer, but, I'm not I don't I don't
- 12:23really party, so I don't really catch myself writing too much about that.
- 12:26You know?
- 12:27My songs are more like healing journey ish songs, man.
- 12:35And you'll hear a little bit about Jesus in my music too, but I I'm not religious, if that
- 12:40makes sense.
- 12:41It makes perfect sense to a guy like me.
- 12:44Yeah.
- 12:44So you got a five song EP, Shape of a Rose.
- 12:48You say your favorite is the title track off the EP.
- 12:52I'm so excited for you, man.
- 12:54This is the first music you've released in a while or at all?
- 12:58This is my first release at all.
- 13:00I'm gonna do some a bigger release later on, but this was just to to suffice my fans because
- 13:06a lot of people are gonna like, bro, when you gonna drop some songs, Doug?
- 13:09Because, especially being out here in Nashville, There is such a deep talent pool,
- 13:16man.
- 13:16It's so it's so beautiful seeing all these talented people, man.
- 13:19And, like, there's some singers, some guitar picking peep dude.
- 13:24Like, I'm like, golly.
- 13:25And I'm supposed to go after him?
- 13:29It's awesome, man.
- 13:30It really challenges me to be better.
- 13:34I think that my songs would be, you could hear it in my voice, man.
- 13:40It's all my soul.
- 13:41I'm pouring it out in this music.
- 13:43Yeah.
- 13:43You'll you you listeners, listen to them.
- 13:46You'll you'll hear what I'm saying.
- 13:48I can't wait to do just that, Lucas.
- 13:51I I appreciate your time with me today.
- 13:53I appreciate you coming on here, sharing a little bit about your personal story.
- 13:57I already know we're gonna have to have you back on our sister show, the Get Better
- 14:00Together project, and let you share a little bit deeper, you know, in-depth on your story
- 14:06and your journey.
- 14:08But, thank you for coming on the show, and and thank you for being part of the scene.
- 14:12It's it's an honor, man.
- 14:13Thank you.
