- 0:15Hi everyone. We're so happy you're here.
- 0:19We love Tuesday nights with all of you, just so you know.
- 0:22It's our favorite. And there's so many exciting
- 0:24things happening right here that or right now, which is so fun.
- 0:27We've been, we just talk about them every time we get together.
- 0:29We're talking about all the exciting things that are
- 0:32happening. And we've got the new FSY guide
- 0:35that all of you are reading with us.
- 0:38We have the new Sunday schedule coming out.
- 0:40We're so excited about the curriculum that's coming.
- 0:43You're going to love the curriculum.
- 0:45We've loved watching your comments on the post that came
- 0:49out earlier this week about the fourth Sunday, the last Sunday
- 0:54where we will be studying a woman in Scripture.
- 0:57And we loved how many of you were like, wait, what about
- 1:00these women in Scripture? And we want to know more about
- 1:03this. And this is one of our favorite
- 1:05parts of what is coming. Our those last Sunday lessons
- 1:09are going to talk about our purpose as women in God's plan
- 1:14and we are going to learn from women in scriptures.
- 1:16And this is the question everyone asks, where do we find
- 1:20out about the women? And the answer is going to be
- 1:23really familiar to all three. 123 the magazine that you.
- 1:30Subscribe. Are you subscribed that?
- 1:33Is where you are going to find these women.
- 1:36Every month a new woman is going to come and there are 12 women
- 1:42and they'll just each month you'll get to meet a new woman
- 1:45from scripture and you are going to love what we're going to
- 1:49learn and study together. We are so excited about this
- 1:53part OK, so how many of you are doing the read a thon with us is
- 1:59what we want to know who's been doing the raise your hand and
- 2:03I'm loving having an entire week to study 1 chapter because it's
- 2:08giving me time to like ponder yes.
- 2:11Read Old Marketer, Yes. Choose your favorite scriptures
- 2:15from the end and just think. And we're going to be so
- 2:18prepared by the time September comes.
- 2:21We're on Chapter 2 this week. That's what we're studying God
- 2:25and wants to communicate with you.
- 2:27And this is one of my most favorite of all 12.
- 2:31But you know, I'm going to say that every month.
- 2:34I really like this one. And one of the reasons why I do
- 2:38is because the question that we get asked the most often when we
- 2:43travel anywhere in the whole entire world is how do I know if
- 2:50it's the spirit? How do I know if the Lord is
- 2:53working in my life? Like how do I know where the
- 2:57prompting is coming from, if it's my own thought or how do I
- 3:02know? And this is what I love about
- 3:05chapter 2 is there. It just helps us to be like, oh,
- 3:10OK, those are things I can be watching for.
- 3:13So we want to talk tonight about what are we learning in our
- 3:17studies so far. OK, so I would like to start
- 3:20with the first paragraph in this introduction.
- 3:24The guy talks about Joseph Smith when he went to pray to the
- 3:28Grove and I, I was thinking about this.
- 3:32He went to the Grove and he started kneeling down and start
- 3:37to open his mouth to say a pray. And I love to read from Joseph
- 3:42Smith 1/15 his account. He said this.
- 3:48I had scarcely done so, when immediately I was seized upon by
- 3:55some power which entirely overcame me, and had such an
- 4:00astonishing influence over me as to bind my tongue so that I
- 4:06could not speak. So he was ready to say a praise,
- 4:11start talking and of course that prayer had a lot of magnificent
- 4:17influence, right? It will turn around the whole
- 4:21thing that we that we that they know at that time.
- 4:24So Satan was trying not for him not to talk, not to say the
- 4:29prey. And also I love this and I want
- 4:35to just think about that for a minute because how many times in
- 4:38our life do we have that moment? It makes you think of the him.
- 4:43Did you think to pray? Like if Satan can just bind our
- 4:48tongue, if he can just cause us to not want to connect with our
- 4:55heavenly Father and to have that moment of prayer, imagine what
- 5:00stops when we stop praying. We we stop being able to pour
- 5:04out our heart. We stop being able to receive
- 5:08that inspiration and to hear. And, and all of a sudden that
- 5:11becomes a really important part of Joseph's story, that line,
- 5:14Direct Line that we have with heavenly Father, with my father,
- 5:18right. OK, so in Second Nephi 3289, it
- 5:21says that the evil spirit teaches not a man to pray, but
- 5:27teaches him that he must not not pray.
- 5:30So we have that influence of the enemy.
- 5:33OK, you don't need to pray. Why are you going or you're not?
- 5:36Worthy to. Pray or you're not worthy.
- 5:38But then he said, I say unto you, that ye must pray always,
- 5:43and not faint, that ye must not perform anything unto the Lord,
- 5:48save in the 1st place ye shall pray unto the Father.
- 5:52So I love that, right? Yes, each one of us has this
- 5:57moment of oh, I'm too tired to pray, or I don't want to do or I
- 6:01don't feel like praying that well, at that moment we need to
- 6:06pray. We need to kneel and just wait
- 6:09till we open our mouth and start praying to our Father.
- 6:12Some of my favorite stories Sister Spanos has ever told me
- 6:15have been times where she says she runs up to her room and
- 6:19throws herself on her bed, and then she just pours out her
- 6:24heart to the Lord. And I love that that's your
- 6:27first inclination. And I want to think just for a
- 6:30minute, I think it'd be so fun. What does pray always look like
- 6:34for you? Like we know about saying your
- 6:36prayers in the morning and saying your prayers at night and
- 6:39saying your prayers before you eat, but what does pray always
- 6:44look like for you? For me, it's just a thought in
- 6:48any moment of my day that I need something.
- 6:51Just it's not not that I'm going to close my arms and no, it's
- 6:55just I don't know. I'm driving, I'm doing things,
- 6:58but I is this heavenly Father help me this or look at this,
- 7:02whatever, it's just a conversation a few seconds.
- 7:06So I love that with the father. How about for?
- 7:08You. Yeah, and mine is very similar.
- 7:10It's it usually starts with the him, the phrase from him.
- 7:13I need the every hour. And when that comes into my
- 7:16mind, I'm like, oh, I know what I need to do.
- 7:18And then, you know, wherever I am, whether I'm driving in my
- 7:21car, then I start that conversation.
- 7:24And it's. Kind of an ongoing conversation,
- 7:26like after I get up off my knees in the morning, revelation
- 7:29continues to happen on the move. Like I'm it's still, it's still
- 7:33there that that connection. That's so good and I love that
- 7:37you mentioned it could be in your car.
- 7:39I love to pray when I'm mowing the bond.
- 7:43It's my favorite time. Do you pray out loud?
- 7:46Because. The loud, yes, but those moments
- 7:50when you just can connect for a longer time and invite him into
- 7:54your life and your story as you're pondering and and
- 7:57listening and you were having some thoughts about that.
- 8:00Just what does the listening look like?
- 8:02Well, it's it's a really interesting experience because
- 8:05like you said, this is the question we get asked the most
- 8:07because sometimes people will say, you know, I had this
- 8:10miraculous download or revelation.
- 8:13For. Me, I've only.
- 8:14Had. Just a handful of experiences.
- 8:16Where I actually felt I didn't. Really hear, but I felt a voice
- 8:21in my head. But those were few and far
- 8:23between. But more than that.
- 8:25It's usually when I'm praying and I pause my prayer because of
- 8:29this and I'm going to read it out loud.
- 8:31So seek your Heavenly Father through prayer.
- 8:33Share with him your joys, worries and questions.
- 8:36Be still and listen for his answers, which may come as
- 8:39feelings of peace, thoughts in your mind and impressions to do
- 8:42something. So when I was growing up, maybe
- 8:44you were like me, I was taught, you know, should pray, stay on
- 8:47your knees. And then when you finish your
- 8:48prayer, just stay a little longer and and listen, which is
- 8:52wonderful, I mean. That's that's what we would do.
- 8:54If we were having a conversation with someone, we would listen
- 8:57for their answer. But rather than that, now my
- 9:01prayers. Are more like.
- 9:02A back and forth, more like a conversation.
- 9:04And if I have that impression about a certain person or
- 9:07somebody that I love or to to do something, I'll pause and I'll
- 9:11write it down on a notepad next to my bed or on my phone so that
- 9:17I can see it during the day. And then I will act on those
- 9:20impressions. And I think that's one of the
- 9:21most important pieces here, is that right here it says in the
- 9:25next phrase. If you have a.
- 9:27Thought or impression to do something kind that will bless
- 9:29someone do it. And this is my invitation to
- 9:32you, for all of us, maybe this next week is to act on those
- 9:36promptings because I have learned when I have an
- 9:38impression to do something to lift or bless somebody else if I
- 9:41I don't. Act on it.
- 9:43It almost always comes back to haunt me.
- 9:46In a way. I remember 1 specific experience
- 9:49where there was a sister. She was from another country and
- 9:52her family had moved into our work for just a short time.
- 9:55But she bore a very tender testimony in a sacrum meeting
- 9:59where she. She just shared her heart.
- 10:01I remember thinking, I want to send her a note, a handwritten
- 10:05note, just to let her know that I was so proud of her.
- 10:08And I kept having that prompting.
- 10:10You should write that note. You should do that.
- 10:12And a week or two went by and then I think we went on vacation
- 10:15and we came back and somebody shared with me that they had
- 10:17moved out of our ward. And they said, do you know where
- 10:20they went? And they said, no, they moved
- 10:21back to their country. And I remember thinking, I never
- 10:24had that chance to, to connect with her to say that.
- 10:27And who knows what happened after that because she was in
- 10:31kind of a difficult situation. Never ignore prompting to lift
- 10:35or bless another act on it. Oh.
- 10:37I love that so much and it kind of talks about that on page 13
- 10:41at the bottom of the question and answers.
- 10:44With time and practice, you will learn to recognize the spirit in
- 10:48a variety of ways. And I I think that's so good to
- 10:52realize it's going to be different for each of us and and
- 10:56we are practicing. That's what we're practicing.
- 10:58I love as you look at the invitation part of the first the
- 11:01strength of youth guide, it says seek, hear and act.
- 11:07And we're just kind of practicing what that looks like
- 11:11in our life. And I think we're going to have
- 11:13moments where we actually, we follow that prompting.
- 11:17We do it and then we and we have that confirmation that, yeah,
- 11:21that was the right thing to do. And sometimes we're going to do
- 11:24good. And we may never have the
- 11:27confirmation of was that the spirit or was that not the
- 11:31spirit? And I love what you're teaching
- 11:33us, but sometimes we'll have the prompting after that was like,
- 11:37that actually was a prompting. And and we'll want a do over,
- 11:41you know, we'll want to be like, oh, I wish I would have done
- 11:43that. I attended a class of our
- 11:48builders of faith, just that youngest group of girls.
- 11:53And in that class, the teacher was teaching the lesson.
- 11:56And at the very end, she said, maybe you've wondered how do I
- 11:59know if it's the spirit? And so she said, I'm going to
- 12:03give you a bold invitation. And she said, I promise you, if
- 12:09you act on this bold invitation, you will learn.
- 12:13You'll, you'll be able to learn. Was it the spirit or wasn't it?
- 12:16And then this was the bold invitation and I can remember
- 12:21she was getting ready to give it that.
- 12:22I was like, I love practicing, learning to listen to the
- 12:25spirit. I've been practicing so hard for
- 12:29two decades. 20 years ago, I made a decision.
- 12:32I was going to practice listening to the spirit and work
- 12:35on doing that. And but I thought to myself, I'm
- 12:39taking the bold invitation. I don't know what it is, but I
- 12:42love learning more about the spirit and the bold invitation.
- 12:46Was this for one week? No matter what, if a thought
- 12:51comes into your mind or into your heart and it's good, it's
- 12:55it is a good thought. You're not going to question
- 12:59where it's coming from. Or if you're, you're not going
- 13:01to have that moment of like, is this me?
- 13:03Is it the spirit? You're not going to have that.
- 13:05You're just going to do it every time, no matter what.
- 13:07Every impression. That's your goal.
- 13:09That's the bold invitation. Every invitation that comes,
- 13:13every prompting, every whatever, you are going to act on it.
- 13:17And then she said, you want to do it.
- 13:19I promise you want to do it. Because she said at the end,
- 13:23you'll look back and you will be able to clearly see, oh, that
- 13:29actually was the spirit. That actually was a prompting.
- 13:32So I was like, I am doing it. I'm going to do it.
- 13:35And I set my goal right after church that Sunday.
- 13:38And then I went through the whole week and here's what I
- 13:42learned. Some of the things that
- 13:45happened, the, the thoughts that came in my mind that happened, I
- 13:49had really sweet experiences with that.
- 13:51I was like when it when I was done, I was like that.
- 13:55That was the spirit. That really was the spirit.
- 13:58And then there were somewhere I afterward, I just, I wasn't
- 14:03sure. I was like, I don't know, I
- 14:05mean, maybe, but there was 1 moment in the week.
- 14:08And remember, I had said I was doing it.
- 14:10I was going to do it the whole week.
- 14:11It didn't matter what the thought was.
- 14:13I was doing it no matter what. And on this particular day, what
- 14:16had happened is I was driving up to the church and I had this
- 14:20prompting come clear your afternoon schedule.
- 14:24Just clear the schedule. And we don't really do that.
- 14:28You couldn't. You couldn't.
- 14:30Even. If you wanted.
- 14:31To but I was like, Oh no, do I do do I do my bold invitation or
- 14:36not? I don't know because that is
- 14:37kind of bold. And so I called the Kristen who
- 14:42helps with my schedule and I was like, could you just like check
- 14:45all my afternoon things and just see if we, if we had to cancel,
- 14:50could we And just maybe just like be prepared in case.
- 14:55And so the day went on and you guys all remember we were here
- 14:58at lunch and I got this text at lunch.
- 15:01And it was from a Bishop of a young woman who was up in
- 15:06Primary Children's Hospital. And the family had asked if
- 15:10there was any chance I could come up that afternoon right
- 15:14then for a visit. And I just knew immediately it
- 15:18was a moment where I was like, oh, that really was a prompting
- 15:22and I was prepared so I could leave.
- 15:23And I say to these two, I feel like I should take something
- 15:26with me when I go up there. I feel like I should take
- 15:28something and and do you have anything?
- 15:31Do you have anything? No one had anything.
- 15:33And I kind of was looking through my office because I was
- 15:36like, there must be something. And I got in my closet And at
- 15:39the bottom of my closet, there were these three birds.
- 15:43I don't even know why they're in my closet.
- 15:45And their job actually is to hold like table number.
- 15:48They have a little spot in their back to hold these numbers.
- 15:51And I got I. Said to both.
- 15:55Of these two, do you think it would be weird if I took these
- 15:59and both of them just looked at me like, you know, And then in
- 16:04my mind, I was like, no, that would be weird.
- 16:07And so I just put him back in the closet.
- 16:09You guys, I did not do the bold invitation.
- 16:13And I drove up and I sat with this darling family and I talked
- 16:17to the mom and the dad and the sisters that were there.
- 16:21And we had the sweetest conversation.
- 16:24And at the end of the conversation, the dad said, can
- 16:28I ask you a question? And as he started talking to me,
- 16:32he he started telling me about this, the symbolism of birds and
- 16:38that it would kind of have been a symbol of their family and
- 16:41even with this daughter. And he just, he wanted to know
- 16:46my thoughts on that. And right when he said it, I
- 16:49thought to myself, I left these in the closet and I could have
- 16:54put one of these in the hand of every one of those family
- 16:58members who a bird is so symbolic for their family.
- 17:02And here's the thing, Heavenly Father knew.
- 17:06He knew about that. And the sweet thing for me is I
- 17:10actually got to go back and sit with that family again.
- 17:15And you know what I took when I went back, one of these for
- 17:19everyone in the family to have with them.
- 17:22And, and that's also true when we practice is sometimes we
- 17:26really will get a chance where that prompting or that
- 17:30understanding will distil upon us and, and we'll have that
- 17:34opportunity to say, OK, try again.
- 17:38And I love that you have this birds here.
- 17:40So we can take a look at the birds and remember that
- 17:43experience. Yes, we will never forget it
- 17:45will. We never will.
- 17:47And at the end of that week, I was with that woman who had
- 17:51taught that lesson and she asked if I had done the bold
- 17:54imitation. And I just started crying.
- 17:56And I said to her, you were actually right.
- 18:00It, it changed my life. It changed how I respond.
- 18:05And I think as we think about that, as we go through, we're
- 18:09going to realize that each of these chapters is going to teach
- 18:12us a spiritual lesson, a principle that is going to
- 18:17change us. It's going to make us better.
- 18:19It's going to make our lives better.
- 18:21And at the end of the day, the most important lesson that we're
- 18:24going to learn is where we can turn for strength.
- 18:29And I just want to say this at the very beginning of this read
- 18:32a thon, I don't think I've even told you guys this yet, but this
- 18:35is such a fun thing. So when we were at the very end
- 18:38of editing this book, there was a day when I sat down with the
- 18:43head editor at the church and we were just going over just the
- 18:47final, like, did we get it all right?
- 18:50And he said to me, there is one thing it says in the book in
- 18:55four different chapters, Jesus Christ is your strength.
- 19:01So which chapter do you want that in?
- 19:05And I sat there for a minute and then I said to him, all of them,
- 19:09if I had my wish, I would put it in all of them.
- 19:13And then we never really talked about it again.
- 19:15And a month ago a man came up to me and he had read this whole
- 19:19book in one week. He was so excited about it and
- 19:22he said to me, I'm sure you know this and I'm sure you probably
- 19:27put some thought into this, but did you know that it says in
- 19:30every chapter, Jesus Christ is your strength?
- 19:34And I didn't know that the editor had really done it, but I
- 19:39was so happy. And so I'm going to give you a
- 19:42clue in this chapter where it is.
- 19:45But as you're doing the read a thon, you might want to be
- 19:48watching for that in every single chapter.
- 19:51As we go in this this chapter, it says this at the bottom of
- 19:53Page 1. He is your strength.
- 19:58That's what it says in this chapter.
- 20:00He is your strength. But as you're reading, if you'll
- 20:03just look through every chapter, you're going to find something
- 20:06really similar to Jesus Christ is your strength.
- 20:10And don't you think it's going to be so fun to watch for that
- 20:13the whole. Summer, it's like your talk of.
- 20:15Course, yes, it's my favorite part of this book.
- 20:19And, and as you look at these pictures of Jesus on the cover,
- 20:22just a reminder that this is one of the places we can turn for
- 20:27strength to, to hear words from prophets and apostles and to
- 20:32help us understand better the principles, the eternal truths,
- 20:36and the invitations and the promised blessings that come
- 20:39from the Lord through his Scripture.
- 20:41And we're so grateful for that. Yes, Amen.
- 20:44I will add that I cannot imagine my life without this line of
- 20:48communication with Heavenly Father.
- 20:50Can you? No.
- 20:52Yes, so. Even on those nights when you
- 20:54think, can I really pray, I don't feel like praying or you
- 20:58feel like this is the same thing I was repenting of last night or
- 21:01the week before. He wants to hear from you.
- 21:05Turn to your Father in heaven. Oh, that's so good.
- 21:07We love you. I hope you know that we love you
- 21:10so much. And we'll be back again next
- 21:13month and we'll be talking about all of our reading between now
- 21:16and then. Yes.
- 21:17Bye bye, bye bye. Love you.
