- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up for Beauty School drop Out? This is part
- 0:03Speaker 1: of I'm Beatus. This is Coly and that's Colton.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Thank you, congrats on the new album. Guys, Where did
- 0:15Speaker 2: all the Butterflies Go? On?
- 0:17Speaker 3: Your lips?
- 0:17Speaker 2: And favor feel like a sonic a bold sonic step.
- 0:20Speaker 2: What do these singles signal about the new era of BSD?
- 0:26Speaker 1: It's the best music we've ever made, and I think
- 0:29Speaker 1: it's the music that we're the most proud of ever
- 0:31Speaker 1: making too. I think it's an album that really defines
- 0:34Speaker 1: who we are as a band.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Yeah, we could do you guys all, How does it
- 0:39Speaker 3: work in the studio?
- 0:39Speaker 2: Do you guys all do your pieces first and then
- 0:42Speaker 2: put it all together?
- 0:45Speaker 4: Really it changes every day, Like I don't think you're
- 0:48Speaker 4: talking about in terms of writing. Yeah, yeah, it's it's
- 0:53Speaker 4: ever changing, Like we all write and produce and so
- 0:56Speaker 4: I think it really just depends on who has the
- 0:58Speaker 4: best idea first day.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:01Speaker 5: It also all play We all play.
- 1:03Speaker 4: Bass, So it's kind of like there's never like a Okay,
- 1:05Speaker 4: you're the guy to do it. I think it we
- 1:07Speaker 4: just make noise until somebody says yes to something.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Yeah that's wicked And your upcoming album dropped September five.
- 1:16Speaker 3: What's the story behind the title.
- 1:20Speaker 4: Ah, it's a story about love falling in and out
- 1:24Speaker 4: of it, And uh, there was a point in time
- 1:27Speaker 4: where I was I was in a relationship where I
- 1:31Speaker 4: don't know it kind of it kind of had warned
- 1:34Speaker 4: me down so dull that I just didn't feel anything anymore,
- 1:38Speaker 4: which is dramatic as it sounds.
- 1:39Speaker 6: It kind of just hit me one day. It was
- 1:40Speaker 6: like the question. Literally, I was like, where did all
- 1:43Speaker 6: the butterflies go?
- 1:43Speaker 4: Because I had so many to begin with, and then
- 1:46Speaker 4: after being dragged through the mud, I kind of got
- 1:48Speaker 4: to a point where I was like, I don't know
- 1:49Speaker 4: if I feel good anymore. But then that kind of
- 1:53Speaker 4: led to the concept of the album, which I think
- 1:55Speaker 4: is in some sort supposed to be like a sonic
- 1:59Speaker 4: represent what that roller coaster ride feels like.
- 2:04Speaker 6: Yeah, whether it could be like pulling out of love
- 2:06Speaker 6: with a lot of things, you know, Like that's where
- 2:09Speaker 6: the concept long out of love with something you know
- 2:15Speaker 6: you used to be really too just doesn't have to
- 2:17Speaker 6: be a relationship wise, even just where we are socially
- 2:20Speaker 6: falling in love with where things are at, you know,
- 2:23Speaker 6: And that's kind of at least for me where I've pulled.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I love that metaphor. I didn't think of
- 2:29Speaker 3: it like that.
- 2:30Speaker 2: I really thought you would have had a I really
- 2:33Speaker 2: thought maybe the title was pulled from nowhere or something
- 2:36Speaker 2: you had heard before. But that's that's really cool. That's
- 2:39Speaker 2: and beautiful and sad at the same time.
- 2:43Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 2:43Speaker 6: That's that's describe this album. It's beautiful and sad.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Awesome.
- 2:51Speaker 2: And what was it like working with Neil Avron on
- 2:53Speaker 2: the new album. Did his track record with bands like
- 2:56Speaker 2: Forall That Boy and Lincoln Park influence your direction?
- 3:00Speaker 5: For sure?
- 3:02Speaker 1: I think every day we would find out a new
- 3:05Speaker 1: band that he worked with too, and we were just like, of.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Course we were tracking parts on on Peat Wentz's old
- 3:11Speaker 4: base that.
- 3:11Speaker 5: He had gifted to Neil. Yeah, no way, literally, Yeah.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Oh that's awesome.
- 3:17Speaker 2: So obviously, Okay, I'm a huge fall lap Boy fan
- 3:20Speaker 2: as well. Obviously you guys have met him, of course, Yeah.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Yeah. Is he just as cool in person?
- 3:28Speaker 1: Honestly, the whole band is just as cool as you
- 3:31Speaker 1: would expect, every single one of them.
- 3:33Speaker 5: They're They're one of the sweetest bands we've ever met.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Oh, that's so nice to hear.
- 3:39Speaker 2: And would you say the new album is a natural
- 3:42Speaker 2: evolution from we made Plans and God laughed and Ready
- 3:45Speaker 2: to Eat or a reinvention.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I think a It was the first time we
- 3:51Speaker 1: really sunk our teeth into an album.
- 3:55Speaker 5: Fully, they're distracting.
- 3:57Speaker 3: I'm so sorry.
- 4:01Speaker 1: We took a year and a half to work right
- 4:02Speaker 1: on this album and that's the first time we've ever
- 4:04Speaker 1: done something like that and being able to spend that
- 4:08Speaker 1: much time on art.
- 4:10Speaker 5: Yeah, there's a love hate.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Relationship that comes in and leaves probably a million times,
- 4:17Speaker 1: and we broke down about this album. I don't even
- 4:21Speaker 1: know how many times we've destroyed every single song on
- 4:23Speaker 1: the album ten plus times.
- 4:25Speaker 5: And then we finally get to hear.
- 4:27Speaker 1: I think that's what makes this album also what it
- 4:30Speaker 1: is is, plus having Neil Avron work on it with
- 4:33Speaker 1: us too, just like the culmination of this process was
- 4:38Speaker 1: super defining for us.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Yeah, and so all the material for this album.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Was there anything left over from your previous albums that
- 4:47Speaker 2: you or is everything totally new?
- 4:51Speaker 5: I think it's totally new on this one. Yeah.
- 4:55Speaker 6: Yeah, it was a quite the process to decide what
- 4:57Speaker 6: was going to make the album or not. We had
- 4:59Speaker 6: to right, you know, massive amount of songs and then
- 5:02Speaker 6: just whittle it down to our top fourteen.
- 5:05Speaker 5: But yeah, yeah, also like deleting your children.
- 5:11Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean yeah, you love each and one of
- 5:14Speaker 6: it and every single thing you have. There's songs that
- 5:17Speaker 6: we had made that we were like, damn, I really
- 5:19Speaker 6: want this to see the light of day. But like
- 5:20Speaker 6: you just gotta think about the bigger picture and what
- 5:24Speaker 6: does it really serve the project?
- 5:26Speaker 5: You know?
- 5:26Speaker 2: Yep, that's it, And I imagine it'd be hard, like
- 5:29Speaker 2: you've all got to agree on something, and some of
- 5:32Speaker 2: you may not love that certain songs or parts are
- 5:35Speaker 2: edited and deleted, but obviously you guys all get along
- 5:39Speaker 2: really well.
- 5:40Speaker 6: Yeah, we get We get into wrestling matches around it.
- 5:43Speaker 6: That's usually how we decide. We just give the backyard
- 5:47Speaker 6: and fight it out.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Yeah you gotta and on your lips leans into a
- 5:53Speaker 2: more electronic, techno inspired sound to me, anyway, was that
- 5:57Speaker 2: a deliberate shift for this new era or something that
- 6:00Speaker 2: happened naturally in the studio totally?
- 6:02Speaker 5: I mean, I think we've always loved DM stuff.
- 6:05Speaker 6: That's like pretty much my background, and like I think
- 6:10Speaker 6: I'm always trying to sneakily slide some medium stuff into
- 6:14Speaker 6: our shit as much as possible. Yeah, but that we're
- 6:17Speaker 6: really inspired with what's been happening in kind of like
- 6:20Speaker 6: the underground, like indie pop sleeves, you know, whole thing.
- 6:23Speaker 6: And so we decided to throw some Jersey club drums
- 6:28Speaker 6: in that one, and yeah, it's cool. I think it's
- 6:31Speaker 6: a different approach to what's happening in rock right now.
- 6:34Speaker 6: We're really inspired by like bringing party rock kind of back.
- 6:38Speaker 5: That's kind of what.
- 6:38Speaker 6: Was one of the I guess buzzwords that we were
- 6:42Speaker 6: using in this production process.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely, and listening to it, it was hard to
- 6:48Speaker 2: like define in a single genre. It was like, see,
- 6:52Speaker 2: I know you guys from being like sort of pop
- 6:54Speaker 2: punk alternative, but this one, this album is like different
- 6:57Speaker 2: And I love the sort of adm feel that's Scott
- 7:00Speaker 2: as well. That's slightly in there. It's not full on,
- 7:03Speaker 2: it's wicked. And if I could get each of you
- 7:08Speaker 2: to tell me maybe one of your musical influences and
- 7:11Speaker 2: then maybe a band that you're really loving today.
- 7:16Speaker 6: Yeah, music influence for me, I mean scrill Ax is
- 7:21Speaker 6: my favorite producer of all time.
- 7:24Speaker 5: Yeah, ban I'm loving today.
- 7:30Speaker 6: Really been into Honestly, dude, I've been going deep cut
- 7:34Speaker 6: like Cat measures the Ball and Again Weird.
- 7:38Speaker 5: I just love that band and I've been jumping up
- 7:40Speaker 5: every day.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Of them, Turnstile and Nirvana I've been like, and Killers
- 7:50Speaker 1: have been bigger influence for me.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Yeah, also.
- 7:55Speaker 5: Love and to Holliss.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Oh nice.
- 8:00Speaker 7: Yeah, I'm really into like indie rock, like sad indie stuff.
- 8:04Speaker 7: So like I grew up in high school like really
- 8:06Speaker 7: loving bands like The National and like now recently, like
- 8:09Speaker 7: I've been really really into Montes DC for sure.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Yes, yes, how good are they? They're killing it awesome.
- 8:16Speaker 2: And you guys have hit some massive stages recently, from
- 8:19Speaker 2: Warp Tour and Lollapalooza to Blink one eight two's Arena tour.
- 8:23Speaker 3: What's been the most surreal moment on stage so far?
- 8:29Speaker 5: Massive Square Garden was pretty nuts. Yeah, that's yeah.
- 8:37Speaker 1: It was just kind of a kick yourself moment. Yeah,
- 8:40Speaker 1: just walking on the stages, like you can't see anything
- 8:44Speaker 1: because it's so dark, but you know that there's like
- 8:47Speaker 1: twenty five thousand seats in front of you, and also
- 8:51Speaker 1: a lot of Palooza set felt really like pivotal for us.
- 8:55Speaker 1: It was just like a pretty magical show already frozen.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Oh it's all right indeed.
- 9:01Speaker 6: But Download in the UK we were one of the
- 9:07Speaker 6: first bands of the day.
- 9:09Speaker 5: We had very full tent and it was really cool
- 9:13Speaker 5: to see.
- 9:14Speaker 6: We've always we've always laughed and called ourselves like the
- 9:17Speaker 6: softest band at the Rock Festival and the heaviest band
- 9:20Speaker 6: at the Pomp Festival.
- 9:21Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that's exactly what happened with Downloads.
- 9:24Speaker 6: We're definitely like we're going out up against some pretty
- 9:26Speaker 6: heavy hitters and it was just really cool to see
- 9:29Speaker 6: how hard people were going for are definitely like pop
- 9:31Speaker 6: leaning music, which is just dope, so because we like
- 9:35Speaker 6: to make those feel as punk as possible and like
- 9:38Speaker 6: bring the energy lives so that's ours our vision.
- 9:41Speaker 2: That's awesome and for going on like as first of
- 9:44Speaker 2: the day as well, especially at somewhere like Downloads, like
- 9:46Speaker 2: you're saying, and to still have a massive crowd that's
- 9:49Speaker 2: what you want.
- 9:50Speaker 3: That's amazing.
- 9:51Speaker 6: Also, we just love like everybody.
- 9:56Speaker 5: Anywhere that I think we see that are like enjoying
- 10:02Speaker 5: what we're doing.
- 10:03Speaker 6: It's almost like it means it's like wow, like our
- 10:08Speaker 6: music literally surpassing.
- 10:12Speaker 5: It's really cool.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Yeah, And do you guys have any weird or funny
- 10:16Speaker 2: fan encounters that you've had whilst on the road that
- 10:19Speaker 2: stand out.
- 10:23Speaker 5: I also had.
- 10:24Speaker 7: A fan give me a decapitated La Boo Boo a
- 10:27Speaker 7: few days ago.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Hang on, I'm so sorry I missed the first whoever
- 10:33Speaker 2: spoke first about their encounter.
- 10:35Speaker 3: I it froze.
- 10:39Speaker 5: There you go.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Sorry.
- 10:41Speaker 4: One time I had a fan try and get me.
- 10:42Speaker 4: They gave me a lead with their blood on it,
- 10:45Speaker 4: and they were trying to get me to consume it.
- 10:47Speaker 6: Oh yeah, yeah, I don't really.
- 10:54Speaker 5: Say about that.
- 10:55Speaker 4: I think you're probably just as surprised as I was
- 10:57Speaker 4: in that moment.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Oh no, what did you do with it?
- 11:03Speaker 5: Yeah? That's never really the move, I think. No.
- 11:08Speaker 3: Gee and the decapitain in La Boo Boo. That's interesting, Yeah,
- 11:14Speaker 3: oh dear.
- 11:16Speaker 2: And you guys have collaborated with some massive names like
- 11:18Speaker 2: Mark Hoppers and Mod's Son. What's something we've learned from
- 11:21Speaker 2: those sessions that stuck with you?
- 11:25Speaker 1: I think with Mark, it's been the most insightful to
- 11:30Speaker 1: just talk to someone in a way of a friend
- 11:33Speaker 1: that gives you insight to like what it's like to
- 11:36Speaker 1: actually be successful in the space and He believes that
- 11:39Speaker 1: art is number one and that's our ethos too, and
- 11:44Speaker 1: so being validated by him makes us feel like we're
- 11:49Speaker 1: doing the right thing.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Mark is very much so an agent of authenticity as
- 11:54Speaker 4: well as Jason from Let Live, and he executive produces
- 11:57Speaker 4: a lot of stuff with us.
- 11:59Speaker 5: They both just so.
- 12:02Speaker 4: So good at reminding us to be ourselves but also
- 12:09Speaker 4: not to ever make jaded decisions.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, and it.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Must be crazy if you guys pinch yourself. That's such huge.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Artists recognize you and like your stuff.
- 12:23Speaker 5: It's still crazy.
- 12:25Speaker 1: It's validating and like the inner child goes nuts like
- 12:31Speaker 1: why all the time, but also like, hell, yeah, we
- 12:35Speaker 1: worked hard to get here.
- 12:36Speaker 3: That's it. That's it. That's so awesome.
- 12:39Speaker 2: And with over sixty million streams and sold out shows
- 12:42Speaker 2: around the world, has the success sunking?
- 12:44Speaker 5: Yet?
- 12:44Speaker 3: What do you still feel like the underdogs?
- 12:50Speaker 5: Young adults? Don't?
- 12:51Speaker 4: I don't think that's I think we're very grateful for
- 12:53Speaker 4: where we're at, but I think we're also very ambitious
- 12:55Speaker 4: for where we're headed.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, good answer. And where do you guys want
- 13:01Speaker 2: BSD to be in five years? Musically, creatively and as
- 13:04Speaker 2: a band?
- 13:08Speaker 5: I think to have.
- 13:10Speaker 4: This fan base grows as big as possible, and to
- 13:13Speaker 4: be able to sell out as big as shows as possible,
- 13:16Speaker 4: and to be able to just.
- 13:18Speaker 5: Like live with stability and have fun doing this. You know.
- 13:22Speaker 6: It's like, I think the biggest goal is that five
- 13:24Speaker 6: years from now we're having just as much fun doing
- 13:26Speaker 6: this as we are now.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:27Speaker 5: Really, Yeah, we get to play bigger.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Yeah, and you're known for your high energy live shows.
- 13:35Speaker 2: What do you do to keep that momentum up night
- 13:38Speaker 2: after night? Do you guys party or are you conscious
- 13:42Speaker 2: of you know, putting on a show the next day
- 13:44Speaker 2: and having to conserve your energy and everything like that.
- 13:48Speaker 4: I think a big misconception about us is when the
- 13:52Speaker 4: word party gets thrown around. Like, for us, party as
- 13:55Speaker 4: a mindset, you know, like it's the dropout mindset. We
- 13:59Speaker 4: just like to make things electric and get everybody jump
- 14:02Speaker 4: in and have a good time. Like it doesn't necessarily
- 14:04Speaker 4: always have to mean killing yourself with substance or consuming
- 14:09Speaker 4: this that or the other. Like really, for us, it's
- 14:11Speaker 4: just about having a good time and bringing people together
- 14:14Speaker 4: through that.
- 14:15Speaker 5: We drink a lot of coffee, yeah, lots of too. Yeah.
- 14:22Speaker 5: Barto is actually a professional double dutcher. I am yeah,
- 14:25Speaker 5: I compete.
- 14:27Speaker 4: No way.
- 14:29Speaker 3: Oh that's crazy. When you said double Dutch, I'm like,
- 14:32Speaker 3: I don't know what that means. But then you said
- 14:34Speaker 3: jump rope, I'm like, yeah, it's like.
- 14:38Speaker 5: It's like people challenge me.
- 14:39Speaker 6: It's like you like the game of skate Yeah, like
- 14:42Speaker 6: it's I do that, but like it's like the game
- 14:44Speaker 6: of jump juine.
- 14:46Speaker 5: You know, it's like we did different tricks and stuff.
- 14:48Speaker 3: That's really good.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Speaking of hobbies, what do you guys do aside from
- 14:53Speaker 2: the band all the time?
- 14:55Speaker 3: Do you have any cool hobbies?
- 14:57Speaker 5: Cry tattoo artists. Oh, no way, I like to tattoo
- 15:04Speaker 5: you a lot. It's fun. Areative direction and skateboarding and boxing.
- 15:09Speaker 5: I worked in the space for a long time. Where
- 15:12Speaker 5: was that out of music production?
- 15:17Speaker 3: Oh we could. That's so cool. If you guys are
- 15:20Speaker 3: in a band for hours from the next show, what's
- 15:22Speaker 3: the go to playlist that all podcasts that you guys
- 15:25Speaker 3: put on.
- 15:26Speaker 5: Oh go to? Well probably each have a very different answer. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 15:32Speaker 5: I know.
- 15:33Speaker 6: Something we can unify on is there's a show called
- 15:35Speaker 6: The Studio that we've been into. It's the New Seth
- 15:38Speaker 6: Rogan Show. It's awesome.
- 15:41Speaker 5: That's good. Yeah, that's good. That's a good one. It's
- 15:45Speaker 5: it's funny.
- 15:46Speaker 6: I feel like we actually, oddly enough, don't listen to
- 15:48Speaker 6: a lot of music on the road. I think like,
- 15:51Speaker 6: as we're around music all the time, it's almost like
- 15:53Speaker 6: a reprieve yep. And we're oftentimes using like the drive
- 15:57Speaker 6: days to like catch up on emails or like work stuff.
- 16:01Speaker 5: Yeah, random things we need to do.
- 16:04Speaker 6: And then when you're parked, you're going, all right, you
- 16:06Speaker 6: gotta go to errands and go get groceries.
- 16:08Speaker 5: Or things you need to do. So yeah, I hate
- 16:11Speaker 5: we get to watch some TV and that's fine.
- 16:14Speaker 3: Yeah, no, that's a common answer.
- 16:16Speaker 2: I ask it quite a bit to artists and musicians
- 16:19Speaker 2: and they say that, you know, listening to other music
- 16:22Speaker 2: sometimes can get too much to distracting. So a lot
- 16:25Speaker 2: of people will either listen to something totally unexpected, like
- 16:28Speaker 2: classical music, or they'll put on a TV show or
- 16:31Speaker 2: have white noise on and I'm like.
- 16:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I can relate.
- 16:35Speaker 6: I'd be bumping their classical yeah, yeah, until everybody gets
- 16:40Speaker 6: pissed to me.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Yeah, shut up.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Awesome, And have you guys been thinking about Australia yet?
- 16:47Speaker 2: Do you have any plans or host to tour here soon.
- 16:50Speaker 5: We think about Australia every day.
- 16:51Speaker 1: We do think about Australia every day. I want to
- 16:53Speaker 1: go over there so bad. Twenty twenty six, we'll be there.
- 16:56Speaker 1: I'm investing it and also telling our agents that we're going.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Yes. And also please, I'd like a tattoo off you.
- 17:03Speaker 2: That would be amazing. Please good, I've booked you in awesome. Oh,
- 17:12Speaker 2: thank you guys so much. It's been absolutely amazing.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Speaking with your congratulations on the new album. Thank you
- 17:19Speaker 3: so much. Guys. We have to see you here soon
