- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Jacob's Funeral When Israel died, Joseph was very sad.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: He hugged his father and cried over him and kissed him.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Joseph commanded his servants to prepare his father's body.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: These servants were doctors.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: The doctors prepared Jacob's body to be buried.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: They prepared the body in the special way of the Egyptians.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: When the Egyptians prepared the body in the special way, they waited forty days before they buried the body.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Then the Egyptians had a special time of sadness for Jacob.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: This time was seventy days.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: After the time of sadness was finished, Joseph spoke to Pharaoh's officers and said, Please tell this to Pharaoh.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: When my father was near death, I made a promise to him.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: I promised that I would bury him in a cave in the land of Canaan.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: This is the cave that he prepared for himself, so please let me go and bury my father, then I will come back here to you.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Pharaoh answered, Keep your promise, go and bury your father.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: So Joseph went to bury his father.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: All of Pharaoh's officials, personal advisers, and all of the older leaders of Egypt went with Joseph.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: All of the people in Joseph's family, his brothers, and all of the people in his father's family went with him.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Only the children and the animals stayed in the land of Goshen, so there was a large crowd of people with him.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: There was even a group of soldiers riding in chariots and some on horses.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: They went to Gorn Etad, east of the Jordan River.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: There they had a long funeral service for Israel, which continued for seven days.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: When the people who lived in Canaan saw the funeral service at Gorn Etad, they said this is a time of great sorrow for those Egyptians, so now that place across the Jordan River is named Abel Mizram.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: So Jacob's sons did what their father told them.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: They carried his body to Canaan and buried it in the cave at Makpala.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: This was the cave near Mamre, in the field that Abraham bought from Ephron the Hittite.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Abraham bought that cave to use as a burial place.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: After Joseph buried his father, he and everyone in the group went back to Egypt.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: The brothers are still afraid of Joseph.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: After Jacob died, Joseph's brothers were worried.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: They were afraid that Joseph would still be mad at them for what they had done years before.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: They said maybe Joseph still hates us for what we did.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: So the brothers sent this message to Joseph.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Before your father died, he told us to give you a message.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: He said, Tell Joseph that I beg him to please forgive his brothers for the bad things they did to him.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: So now Joseph, we beg you, please forgive us for the bad things we did to you.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: We are the servants of the God of your father.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: That made Joseph very sad and he cried.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: His brothers went to him and bowed down in front of him.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: They said, We will be your servants.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Then Joseph said to them, Don't be afraid, I am not God, I have no right to punish you.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: It is true that you planned to do something bad to me, but really God was planning good things.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: God's plan was to use me to save the lives of many people, and that is what happened.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: So don't be afraid.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: I will take care of you and your children.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: And so Joseph said kind things to his brothers, and this made them feel better.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Joseph continued to live in Egypt with his father's family.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: He died when he was one hundred and ten years old.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: During Joseph's life, Ephraim had children and grandchildren, and his son Manasseh had a son named Makir.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: Joseph lived to see Makir's children.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: The death of Joseph When Joseph was near death, he said to his brothers, My time to die is almost here, but I know that God will take care of you and lead you out of this country.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: God will leave you to the land he promised to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Then Joseph asked his people to make a promise.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Joseph said, Promise me that you will carry my bones with you when God leads you out of Egypt.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Joseph died in Egypt when he was one hundred and ten years old.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Doctors prepared his body for burial and put the body in a coffin in Egypt.
