- 1:17Speaker 1: everyday capability and long haul readiness without losing your grip
- 1:21Speaker 1: on reality, which I think is something that you do
- 1:23Speaker 1: just so well. You're not a prepper, but you have
- 1:26Speaker 1: that mindset of being prepared, and I think that's a
- 1:28Speaker 1: really fine line and really respect that about you.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I appreciate it.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Your last line of defense online. That's kind of your handle,
- 1:36Speaker 1: your YouTube, your social It's a great follow by the way,
- 1:39Speaker 1: So you've built subscribed gets as good, but you built
- 1:42Speaker 1: a community I guess around gear that you actually test
- 1:46Speaker 1: informed decisions, honest reviews. You have a kind of also
- 1:49Speaker 1: a big passion for overlanding. I'm really excited for this one.
- 1:53Speaker 1: This is going to be a really great podcast.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it'll be good. A little different than
- 1:57Speaker 2: the norm in that I'm probably the least traveled guest
- 2:00Speaker 2: on the podcast, but we're going to make it work.
- 2:03Speaker 1: So who are you?
- 2:05Speaker 2: Hey? Yeah, Hey, I like here. Yeah, So I'm like,
- 2:09Speaker 2: I guess brief brief, full life background. Maybe I'm a
- 2:13Speaker 2: dude currently living in Colorado. I was born to mom
- 2:18Speaker 2: and dad. My dad was in the army, so I
- 2:19Speaker 2: was an army brat for my entire life from birth
- 2:22Speaker 2: to when I left the nest.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I moved around a bunch.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Moved around a bunch, and my parents traveled quite a bit.
- 2:29Speaker 1: The least traveled personal.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Yeah, like by vehicle. Like, I've been to a lot
- 2:33Speaker 2: of places because my parents liked to travel. So I've
- 2:37Speaker 2: lived overseas for a little bit, traveled overseas a little bit,
- 2:39Speaker 2: and lived in every coast in North and South and Texas.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Born in Minnesota and.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Everywhere cool, cool, Midwestern.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Yeah. Graduated high school from Hawaii. That's fun. And then
- 2:50Speaker 2: lived in California for I had to be so.
- 2:52Speaker 1: I graduated from high school in the suburbs of Chicago.
- 2:55Speaker 2: He went some. Yeah, I had a great high school.
- 2:59Speaker 2: It was a great time. That's actually when I got
- 3:00Speaker 2: my first jeep Wrangler. That was my first vehicle as
- 3:03Speaker 2: a jeep wrangler, top down, two door criuising around to
- 3:06Speaker 2: the beach.
- 3:07Speaker 1: First time I was in a jeep wrangler spring break
- 3:09Speaker 1: nineteen ninety eight. Yeah, Matt's family vacation. I was eight, Okay,
- 3:13Speaker 1: I remember crawling in the back of a green jeep Wrangler.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Sahar Sahara.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Yeah, Saharas were cool.
- 3:20Speaker 1: I think they should do a throwback on those.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Yeah, they were rad. I don't even think they had
- 3:24Speaker 2: rubicons back then.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Now those are like three.
- 3:26Speaker 2: And I didn't have the set. I just had the regular,
- 3:28Speaker 2: but I wanted the Sahara at the time. But it
- 3:31Speaker 2: was a good time. So we drove out on the
- 3:32Speaker 2: beach and did a little bit of this, and that's
- 3:34Speaker 2: what maybe sparked my interest in off roading in general.
- 3:38Speaker 2: I was into off roading, wheeling, building out rigs long
- 3:42Speaker 2: before I was into even camping in them. Parents loved
- 3:45Speaker 2: to travel, We camped a bit as a kid, all
- 3:48Speaker 2: that stuff. Then in my adulthood got into kind of
- 3:53Speaker 2: firearms and just generally being prepared and that kind of stuff,
- 3:56Speaker 2: and did some backpacking and fly fishing, like to hike
- 4:00Speaker 2: up to alpine lakes and do that whole deal, and
- 4:03Speaker 2: separately love to off road.
- 4:05Speaker 1: But all of these things are related, right, But it's like,
- 4:07Speaker 1: you're going to the alpine lake. You don't want to
- 4:09Speaker 1: go to the one that everybody's going to that as
- 4:11Speaker 1: a parking lot next to it.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Yeah, you want the fish to be dumb.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Yeah, Like so then you start thinking of, oh, maybe
- 4:16Speaker 1: I need some tires because it's a Shaeley Road or
- 4:18Speaker 1: maybe I'm gonna get stuck, Okay, then I need to
- 4:20Speaker 1: bumper with a winch. Like it's all I think. The
- 4:22Speaker 1: cool thing about this podcast is it's all so interlinked.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, and I agree, and it's there. So vehicles
- 4:31Speaker 2: turned in. They went from I would off road to
- 4:34Speaker 2: off road. That was the activity, that was the event.
- 4:36Speaker 2: We're gonna break some stuff and we're gonna conquer some obstacles.
- 4:40Speaker 2: And then the next weekend I would go back back
- 4:42Speaker 2: and do a separate set of hobbies. And then I
- 4:47Speaker 2: was like, oh, why don't I combine them together? And
- 4:49Speaker 2: the first time I actually kind of got into it
- 4:51Speaker 2: at a disco, a land Rover Discovery, a ninety seven Discovery.
- 4:55Speaker 1: I had a ninety seven Discovery and jeezh School because
- 5:00Speaker 1: I coudn't afford a jeep and they were cheaper.
- 5:02Speaker 2: They were, I mean, you got them from dirt cheap.
- 5:04Speaker 1: I mean they they're actually pretty underrated. I think, Yeah,
- 5:08Speaker 1: they got.
- 5:08Speaker 2: The V eight's aluminum block, the underpowered but solid axle,
- 5:12Speaker 2: cool interiors.
- 5:13Speaker 1: It flex pretty well.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Yeah, they do. They do well off roads. So I
- 5:16Speaker 2: had some skinnies on that and the Safari Rack and
- 5:19Speaker 2: I was like, I'm going to take Yeah it was white.
- 5:23Speaker 2: I like you taped off from the painted the hood
- 5:25Speaker 2: like a section of the hood black, like it was
- 5:27Speaker 2: the whole. It was a vibe at the time. But
- 5:29Speaker 2: that was the first vehicle where I was like, you
- 5:30Speaker 2: know what, I could just throw a sleeping bag in
- 5:32Speaker 2: the back of this in camp and so that was
- 5:35Speaker 2: probably what got me into Okay, now I'm going to
- 5:37Speaker 2: use my vehicle as a tool to pursue other hobbies.
- 5:40Speaker 2: And that through years of evolution, eventually I got a Tacoma.
- 5:44Speaker 1: I think we met in your Tacoma day.
- 5:46Speaker 2: The Tacoma was where established a presence in the overland space.
- 5:51Speaker 2: People weren't really putting rooftop tents over their beds and
- 5:55Speaker 2: stuff like that, and I was just dicking. I've always
- 5:57Speaker 2: been a tinker. Just I wonder how I can make
- 6:00Speaker 2: this work for me, So mess with some stuff through
- 6:03Speaker 2: a rooftop tent on the Tacoma. And that's what got
- 6:06Speaker 2: me in.
- 6:06Speaker 1: That was the multiicam wrapped one.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, recently it's quicksand and then eventually I multiicam
- 6:11Speaker 2: wrapped it.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Yeah that was actually quite cool back then.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Yeah, it was. It was a like I talked to
- 6:18Speaker 2: people in the industry and that was a really defining
- 6:21Speaker 2: truck or the weekend adventure space. I have a small truck,
- 6:26Speaker 2: I have a bed. How can I put a tent
- 6:29Speaker 2: on it? That truck and through the videos probably caused
- 6:34Speaker 2: a major market shift that truck probably now than that
- 6:37Speaker 2: style that is, but it wasn't. That wasn't the first
- 6:40Speaker 2: one to do it. I'm not trying to claim something,
- 6:42Speaker 2: but i've certainly.
- 6:43Speaker 1: But it was early in the whole kind of creator days.
- 6:46Speaker 1: It was early in the overlying space. It would have
- 6:49Speaker 1: been twy seventeen.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a sixteen truck and probably about twenty
- 6:54Speaker 2: seventeen was when I started doing that stuff. So yeah,
- 6:57Speaker 2: whether that was a good or bad thing for the industry,
- 7:00Speaker 2: I don't know, but it's.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Great, man. I think anything that gets people out, that's
- 7:04Speaker 1: more of the attitude I think I need to take.
- 7:06Speaker 1: It's definitely times where I get a little, oh, overlanding
- 7:08Speaker 1: is only international, and yeah, maybe I need to soften
- 7:12Speaker 1: up on that. I think as long as you're getting out,
- 7:14Speaker 1: I think as long as there's absensive adventure, yeah, I
- 7:17Speaker 1: think that is really I think that's what defines Overlanding
- 7:21Speaker 1: is like a little bit of dust, a little bit
- 7:23Speaker 1: of a rough road, and there has to be a
- 7:25Speaker 1: sense of adventure, right.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Yeah, And this is where shift a difference between more
- 7:30Speaker 2: of the we're digging into cultures and we're doing international
- 7:34Speaker 2: travel and we're crossing borders. Your world and then my world,
- 7:38Speaker 2: which is I got a nine to five job, I
- 7:40Speaker 2: got a lot of crap going on. But I want
- 7:42Speaker 2: to do a little weekend reset. I want to go
- 7:45Speaker 2: just disconnect. I want to go somewhere with no service.
- 7:48Speaker 2: I can't take three months to do a big trip,
- 7:51Speaker 2: but I can. And this is what I talk about
- 7:53Speaker 2: a lot. I can take an eighteen hour adventure after
- 7:56Speaker 2: work on a Friday, dig out, cook a hot dog
- 7:59Speaker 2: on a fire, come back at noon the next day.
- 8:03Speaker 2: But that was enough to just that was nice. I
- 8:07Speaker 2: stared at the stars. I disconnected. So I made this
- 8:11Speaker 2: term up where it was like I never liked calling
- 8:15Speaker 2: myself like an overlander, because I was like, I'm not, really,
- 8:17Speaker 2: it's not what I do is not overlanding. So I
- 8:20Speaker 2: actually made this whole series on YouTube called weekend or Lander,
- 8:23Speaker 2: which was an homage and making fun of poking a
- 8:26Speaker 2: joke at I think you're an overland I was, like,
- 8:29Speaker 2: I do it on the weekend.
- 8:30Speaker 1: It's just not taking yourself super seriously. It's definitely like
- 8:32Speaker 1: people that love to wear this badge of I'm an overlander.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Whenever I say, like I overland, I always whether you're
- 8:39Speaker 2: watching this or not, I always quotation, yeah, I'm into overlanding,
- 8:43Speaker 2: but not would I love to do some international travel
- 8:47Speaker 2: and just like ship my truck to Iceland and whatever
- 8:50Speaker 2: that would be. Yes, but I haven't built my life
- 8:55Speaker 2: around that ability. So instead I'll go out for a weekend.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Maybe I'll go for a few days out to Moab
- 9:02Speaker 2: or like, I'll do short trips. But I have a
- 9:04Speaker 2: ton of fun with it, and I'm able to again
- 9:06Speaker 2: combine hobbies and hang out with friends, and I just
- 9:09Speaker 2: it's way different getting together with some friends around a
- 9:12Speaker 2: campfire at twelve thousand feet than it is going to
- 9:16Speaker 2: somebody's backyard barbecue. And I love that aspect of it,
- 9:19Speaker 2: and it only takes eighteen hours to do. So I've
- 9:23Speaker 2: embraced that reality where it's yeah, I didn't I didn't
- 9:28Speaker 2: travel down to get out for five weekends and eat
- 9:32Speaker 2: some hot talks or whatever. And I love that aspect of.
- 9:35Speaker 1: We're good, yeah from Chicago, and I don't want to
- 9:37Speaker 1: fight you.
- 9:39Speaker 2: It'd be fun. But yeah, I guess that's the journey
- 9:42Speaker 2: of my life as it pertains to more this probably
- 9:45Speaker 2: the listeners of this podcast. The separate aspect of kind
- 9:48Speaker 2: of my life and the channel, I guess is what
- 9:50Speaker 2: you alluded to earlier, which is a general sense of preparedness.
- 9:55Speaker 2: I don't ever want to be in a situation where
- 10:00Speaker 2: as small as I need to cut a tag off
- 10:03Speaker 2: a label, I got a knife for that. Two I
- 10:06Speaker 2: got a flat tire, I gotta tire repair kit for
- 10:08Speaker 2: that too. I don't know how much you can talk about.
- 10:11Speaker 1: It, Okay, it's all I think, this preparedness thing. There's
- 10:14Speaker 1: prepping and there's preparedness, and maybe I don't know is
- 10:17Speaker 1: that Is there like an actual distinction between those two terms.
- 10:20Speaker 2: No, there are different because there's the crazy doomsday prepper.
- 10:24Speaker 1: There's a doomsday preper thing.
- 10:26Speaker 2: I'm a bit of that, but not not really, Like
- 10:28Speaker 2: I'm not walking around with my tin hat and my
- 10:31Speaker 2: emp bag being like the world's ending tomorrow kind of deal.
- 10:34Speaker 2: But if the world did end tomorrow, I'd be pretty
- 10:36Speaker 2: set up for it. Which is not totally what I preach,
- 10:41Speaker 2: but there are certain aspects of it. Hey, if your
- 10:43Speaker 2: power goes out for a while, dude, totally have some
- 10:46Speaker 2: things in mind where you can power your fridge or whatever.
- 10:49Speaker 1: We're our house is effectively off grid.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Test the power walls.
- 10:53Speaker 1: And you love them so much, but you think about it, like,
- 10:55Speaker 1: especially with what we just went through with COVID, like
- 10:58Speaker 1: that got weird.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Did you not have a little extra toilet paper?
- 11:01Speaker 1: Did I have one hundred and twenty eight rolls? Maybe
- 11:04Speaker 1: because it's this panic thing, But there's these things that
- 11:07Speaker 1: you can take into your daily life, like those Tesla
- 11:09Speaker 1: power walls are like the perfect example. We're both Tesla fanboys.
- 11:12Speaker 1: By the way, I have an oil well on my roof.
- 11:15Speaker 1: I don't have to go to the gas station. I
- 11:16Speaker 1: charge my car off grid, I power my house. I
- 11:20Speaker 1: power everything from solar panels on my roof. Yeah, but
- 11:24Speaker 1: we also do solar on overland trucks. Literally right now,
- 11:27Speaker 1: the ac was just running in the Earth Roamer. We've
- 11:30Speaker 1: twelve hundred wats of solar on this.
- 11:31Speaker 2: You can get sol charging it.
- 11:33Speaker 1: On your tacoma. We live in a world that is
- 11:35Speaker 1: just like energy intensive now so.
- 11:37Speaker 2: There's something cool to the whole thing, like over overland travels.
- 11:40Speaker 2: What are self sufficient, self reliant? Whatever the definite you
- 11:44Speaker 2: guys know the definition of it. But taking that aspect
- 11:47Speaker 2: and just applying it to kind of every everything. So
- 11:51Speaker 2: like I I EEDC I every day carry a multi
- 11:53Speaker 2: tool for example. And if something's loose, if Mike, I
- 11:57Speaker 2: use this example, like a handle on my cabinet is
- 12:01Speaker 2: loose where I'm like, maybe I'm in a hurry, and
- 12:03Speaker 2: I'd be like, oh, yeah, I'll go get a screwdriver
- 12:05Speaker 2: and I'll fix that later. And then months go by
- 12:08Speaker 2: and I still got the loose I'll get that later.
- 12:10Speaker 2: When you have something on you, you're just like, oh,
- 12:12Speaker 2: I got a screwdriver in my pocket.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Done.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Yeah maybe, but yeah, So that kind of aspect I
- 12:20Speaker 2: apply it to my vehicle, like have everything in the vehicle.
- 12:23Speaker 2: If I live in Colorado, if a road.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Closes, like you're remote. You used to be used to
- 12:30Speaker 1: be a.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Little more remote. I'm twenty minutes from movie theaters in
- 12:34Speaker 2: Walmarts and conco and everything.
- 12:35Speaker 1: That is the dream and the flex though, is to
- 12:37Speaker 1: have a property that's a little far away.
- 12:39Speaker 2: But yeah, like I'm on fifteen acres, you can't like.
- 12:42Speaker 1: It's even more land.
- 12:43Speaker 2: I worked towards that, like it was a ten year
- 12:46Speaker 2: goal to get there, and now I'm pretty set up.
- 12:49Speaker 2: So if I was like doomsday prep red bick, I
- 12:51Speaker 2: need to get four hours away from Denver or whatever,
- 12:54Speaker 2: but I'm like, I got a pretty good setup.
- 12:56Speaker 1: We're in Prescott, and my prepper notion is everybody from
- 13:00Speaker 1: Phoenix is going to come to press it. You've got
- 13:04Speaker 1: to go. I think just being prepared with your vehicle
- 13:08Speaker 1: is so important. Your analogy of having the multi tool
- 13:11Speaker 1: to fix something around the house that's just there and
- 13:13Speaker 1: it gets done. Having a prepared vehicle can also benefit
- 13:19Speaker 1: you in daily life. I bought a grenadier and did
- 13:23Speaker 1: the little goose gier things. I have the dometic drawer,
- 13:26Speaker 1: fridge and the lithium battery and vehicles self sufficient. The
- 13:29Speaker 1: way I say it is that I'm ready to go
- 13:31Speaker 1: camping at any time. But also like, in some ways,
- 13:35Speaker 1: I guess that's a bug out.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, like.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Two different people could look at it from two different
- 13:40Speaker 1: perspectives and say.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Yeah, and so it's not. Again, I live my life
- 13:45Speaker 2: in a couple different worlds. Maybe the preparedness world in
- 13:48Speaker 2: the overland world or whatever, and they mesh and they
- 13:50Speaker 2: collide a lot in a good way. But even the
- 13:52Speaker 2: daily life. You got a fridge, and I have kids now,
- 13:55Speaker 2: and maybe I got a fridge in my car all
- 13:57Speaker 2: the time we're going to go to the park. But
- 13:59Speaker 2: once some pops after yeah, boom. But then I'll take
- 14:02Speaker 2: it on my trip to my lab for a few
- 14:04Speaker 2: days and keep some bacon cold or whatever. I try
- 14:07Speaker 2: to take things that someone that didn't have those hobbies
- 14:12Speaker 2: but was into preparedness would idealize or want to do.
- 14:17Speaker 2: And I say, why don't you make that a hobby?
- 14:19Speaker 2: Then you want to build a bug out truck and
- 14:21Speaker 2: it's just going to park in your drive and want
- 14:23Speaker 2: you get into overlanding while you take that out? Why
- 14:26Speaker 2: you actually see what airing down your tires does and
- 14:29Speaker 2: have ability to patch it if you need to.
- 14:31Speaker 1: The training aspect is I think so important. You can
- 14:34Speaker 1: have all of the gear but none of the knowledge. Yeah,
- 14:36Speaker 1: if you don't know how to put a plug in
- 14:38Speaker 1: a tire, probably not going to figure it out. It's
- 14:42Speaker 1: not that hard. Once somebody says, hey, yea, you turn
- 14:44Speaker 1: it through here and you do this and you do that.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Yeah, but if you've done it a time or two,
- 14:48Speaker 2: it's way easier than if you're doing it the first time.
- 14:51Speaker 1: That's just assuming that triple A is coming.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Yeah. Where you're out, Yeah a lot of time. Like
- 14:55Speaker 2: I've done the little tuttu rules and tires and it's
- 14:58Speaker 2: easier than changing a spare even Yeah, just like I'll
- 15:01Speaker 2: pop it in.
- 15:01Speaker 1: A gets high off and then you're out for dinner
- 15:05Speaker 1: and then every nice item of clothing that you've worn
- 15:08Speaker 1: is covered and breakdown.
- 15:09Speaker 2: You're climbing under your chain stuck, things aren't working the
- 15:12Speaker 2: way there's it always goes wrong, especially if you haven't
- 15:16Speaker 2: done that kind of stuff. So even changing a tire,
- 15:18Speaker 2: it's maybe you should do where your jacket is in
- 15:20Speaker 2: your car up. This crowd probably does, but not everyone does.
- 15:23Speaker 2: So all that stuff is good and a lot of it,
- 15:26Speaker 2: like you're saying, is the skill is In my world
- 15:29Speaker 2: we call it like getting reps in basically, so practicing
- 15:32Speaker 2: it until you don't have to think about it, or
- 15:34Speaker 2: if you're under stressed, then you don't have to think
- 15:38Speaker 2: through the process. It's more second nature. You can have
- 15:41Speaker 2: all the knowledge in the world and sometimes people emphasize
- 15:45Speaker 2: the skills and the knowledge too much. You can't plug
- 15:47Speaker 2: a tire with all the knowledge in the world. If
- 15:49Speaker 2: you don't have a tire prepare kit. It's like you
- 15:52Speaker 2: need the gear. The knowledge is super important. But sometimes
- 15:56Speaker 2: people overemphasize gear and they don't know how to use it.
- 15:59Speaker 2: And sometimes they're like, my two wheel drive camera could
- 16:01Speaker 2: go everywhere and inexperienced guy in a Tacoma could go. Yeah,
- 16:05Speaker 2: part of that's true, but why don't you just try
- 16:08Speaker 2: to get to both.
- 16:09Speaker 1: There's been some places I've been to around the world
- 16:12Speaker 1: and I'm like, man, I feel like a real explorer.
- 16:14Speaker 1: I'm in like Northwest Namibia on the end goal and border,
- 16:19Speaker 1: and I'm in a seventy series land Cruiser with a
- 16:22Speaker 1: one HC diesel engine and manual transmission. There's no computers
- 16:25Speaker 1: in the truck. I'm like, yeah, I'm prepared, and then
- 16:27Speaker 1: like a Toyta Corolla rolls up like h But that
- 16:33Speaker 1: guy drives that road every day, as you're saying, he
- 16:35Speaker 1: has his reps in. He doesn't have to blast over
- 16:38Speaker 1: the or I'm just driving over the proverbial pothole in
- 16:42Speaker 1: the corrugation. He knows the road he's figured it out.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Cara momentum through this section.
- 16:47Speaker 1: So yeah, there's a healthy combination of both. Knowledge is
- 16:50Speaker 1: always great, but to a degree, like you have to
- 16:52Speaker 1: have the goods.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Yeah, some of them at least. Yeah, absolutely, what I do,
- 16:58Speaker 2: who I am, what I'm into, it's just a combination
- 17:02Speaker 2: of all those things. And I just try to have
- 17:03Speaker 2: a good time. And my motto, I guess is gear
- 17:06Speaker 2: in good times. Because I'm a gearhead. I like testing
- 17:09Speaker 2: out stuff, like trying things out of like solving problems.
- 17:12Speaker 1: It's like, what's the coolest gadget you've recently encountered.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Completely unrelated to anything. It's this little it's from Exceed Design,
- 17:23Speaker 2: not a plug, not sponsor not getting paid. It's this little.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Oh because it has a replaceable.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Blade, replaceable blade you can spin it around.
- 17:31Speaker 1: That's actually smart.
- 17:32Speaker 2: I can just destroy this thing. Whereas if I have
- 17:34Speaker 2: a really nice knife with whatever.
- 17:37Speaker 1: So if you're not watching this on YouTube, essentially this
- 17:41Speaker 1: is a really cool premium folding knife, but it has
- 17:44Speaker 1: like a box cutter and utility. It's super nice.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Nice. It's like one hundred dollars. You could get a
- 17:52Speaker 2: Milwaukee Fastback or whatever that.
- 17:54Speaker 1: Essentially does kind of I would carry that because I
- 17:56Speaker 1: always joke like I have these ludicrously expensive pocket knives
- 18:00Speaker 1: and I just use them to open Amazon packages. Yeah,
- 18:03Speaker 1: and that's actually better at what I do.
- 18:05Speaker 2: So it's what are you using your knife for most
- 18:07Speaker 2: of the times? Like opening boxes? Honestly, But I'm like,
- 18:10Speaker 2: I have some property. I'm creating a homestead, so I'm
- 18:13Speaker 2: just like getting lumber packs delivered, hacking through building a
- 18:18Speaker 2: chicken coop and this thing I'm just like.
- 18:21Speaker 1: In your mid thirties early forties where you have this
- 18:25Speaker 1: desire to have chickens.
- 18:27Speaker 2: I don't know you have chickens now, do Yeah, we
- 18:29Speaker 2: have a ton of them.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Button quail Okay, have you seen button quail?
- 18:34Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 18:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I want to have a button quail ranch because
- 18:37Speaker 1: I could have if they have a little button quail
- 18:41Speaker 1: enclosures and you just have them in like your laundry room,
- 18:43Speaker 1: your quail legs.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Yeah. I was talking to someone just recently. If I
- 18:47Speaker 2: was like sailing across the Pacific, I'd throw a couple
- 18:51Speaker 2: of chickens in there. Man. Some button or quail would
- 18:55Speaker 2: be even better.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Honestly, this woman on Instagram that has like this button
- 19:01Speaker 1: quail account and she creates these little dillic enclosures for them.
- 19:06Speaker 1: When they have a high end button quail, it's like
- 19:09Speaker 1: bespoke button quail. I see, I didn't what kind of
- 19:14Speaker 1: chickens do you have.
- 19:15Speaker 2: A bunch of different breeds? Really, my wife is building up.
- 19:21Speaker 2: We have fifty chickens right now.
- 19:22Speaker 1: I have to worry about price of eggs, eggs.
- 19:26Speaker 2: If you live in the Morsnarian, we want to buy
- 19:28Speaker 2: a farm pressh eggs. Hit me up. Now. We're actually
- 19:30Speaker 2: selling eggs to just some neighbors and stuff now, and
- 19:33Speaker 2: so my wife is more into we want every color
- 19:36Speaker 2: of egg, the deep olive greens and the dark browns
- 19:40Speaker 2: and the blues. So our breeds are specialty for egg aesthetic.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Okay, on the homestead concept, so you have eggs hunting
- 19:49Speaker 1: for protein.
- 19:50Speaker 2: I do have animals on the property. I could hunt,
- 19:53Speaker 2: but it's more again, it's more self reliance, like solar
- 19:56Speaker 2: and battery on the roof. I want to store up
- 19:59Speaker 2: some feed for my chickens. And when there's a chicken
- 20:02Speaker 2: egg shortage, does just megan jokes and then yeah, so
- 20:06Speaker 2: we do some gardening as well. I want to build
- 20:08Speaker 2: an orchard, plant grow an orchard. So I planted a
- 20:11Speaker 2: bunch of fruit trees on the property and a bunch
- 20:13Speaker 2: of like berry bushes and stuff like that. So it's
- 20:16Speaker 2: checking the prepper box, but it's also hobby the whole
- 20:19Speaker 2: self sufficiency.
- 20:20Speaker 1: I'm realizing we have so much in comment on this
- 20:22Speaker 1: homestead front. Like we have some peach trees, we have
- 20:24Speaker 1: an apple tree. We're in Arizona. We have some water
- 20:27Speaker 1: issues right now, so we're not super watering. We're looking
- 20:29Speaker 1: at our next property and we just there's also like
- 20:32Speaker 1: a health component to like, and there's.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Also something like a lot of that too.
- 20:36Speaker 1: I don't want to sit or something spiritual out growing
- 20:38Speaker 1: your own food, but there's something special and satisfying about it.
- 20:44Speaker 2: You're running a n acy, not plugged into anything, not
- 20:46Speaker 2: running the generator, just off of the sun on the roof,
- 20:49Speaker 2: like similar to that.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm thankful that I bought my solar thing when
- 20:53Speaker 1: I did, because it has gotten like considerably more expensive.
- 20:57Speaker 1: It's like as soon as the like subs cities went in,
- 21:00Speaker 1: all they did was just like add the subsidy on
- 21:04Speaker 1: top of the price. Even long term I think about it,
- 21:07Speaker 1: I'm just like man like it allows me this stuff
- 21:09Speaker 1: is going to allow me to travel more. Like I
- 21:12Speaker 1: don't have a four hundred dollars electric bill like most
- 21:14Speaker 1: people do in the summer in Arizona. I don't spend
- 21:16Speaker 1: a couple hundred dollars a month on gasoline because we
- 21:19Speaker 1: just Yeah, we have the Grenadier and we have this
- 21:22Speaker 1: earth stomper five thousand that gets ten miles to the gallon.
- 21:25Speaker 2: But ten's pretty good.
- 21:26Speaker 1: And point eight miles to the gallon for something that
- 21:28Speaker 1: has a friggin' wine rack is astonishing, because I bet
- 21:32Speaker 1: your Tacoma didn't get much better.
- 21:34Speaker 2: No, that's why I'm saying that is impressive. You got
- 21:37Speaker 2: ten mile per gallon. In the podcast Studios.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Oh man, this is the episode where Matt becomes a prepper.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Ninety gallons of diesel meant twenty gallons of water.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Yeah, nearly one thousand miles of range.
- 21:48Speaker 1: I was just like cruising if I had to, I'm
- 21:50Speaker 1: sure I could get a thousand. I think I think
- 21:53Speaker 1: it's ninety gallons of stated capacity, but I think.
- 21:56Speaker 2: I can usable you get a little more.
- 21:59Speaker 1: I think I actually get a little more. Fill in
- 22:00Speaker 1: the top auxiliary tanks they have to have a certain
- 22:03Speaker 1: amount of error. Whatever I've put fifty five gallons in
- 22:07Speaker 1: that tank before there. You go, yes, or I scre
- 22:11Speaker 1: on that gas pump. But yeah, but honestly, we live
- 22:14Speaker 1: in an area that's very susceptible to wildfires. You do
- 22:18Speaker 1: as well. It's not always these like cataclysmic events that
- 22:22Speaker 1: you're preparing for. But I know that, Okay, Like if
- 22:26Speaker 1: I had to go, I literally just pull the earthrum
- 22:30Speaker 1: er out, hope and pray that the rest of the
- 22:32Speaker 1: stuff doesn't go up and smoke.
- 22:34Speaker 2: But yeah, less affected by it.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't need to live in a hotel. I
- 22:38Speaker 1: have this thing.
- 22:39Speaker 2: So your prepper dude, Yeah, we're.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Realizing that Matt's actually a bit of a prepper. He's
- 22:44Speaker 1: gone off grid. He has the ultimate prepper truck.
- 22:48Speaker 2: You're even more dial.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Ks. I don't actually shoot them, you would.
- 22:53Speaker 2: Be a HK guy. I could see a little class
- 22:56Speaker 2: year I got.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Into the sp thing. I just got like my first
- 23:00Speaker 1: suppressor because I have like fifteen years of motorsport, has
- 23:03Speaker 1: my hearing all hecked up.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Pressors are great.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Oh it's so good. It's like a sewing machine if
- 23:09Speaker 1: this roller lock thing, it's really good. Okay, So Matt
- 23:12Speaker 1: is officially a prepper. All of the people that listen
- 23:16Speaker 1: to me pontificate about international overlanding.
- 23:19Speaker 2: No, it's good, it's good. Everyone should be a prepper.
- 23:21Speaker 2: Some everyone should be a little prepared.
- 23:22Speaker 1: I think so.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Not paranoid prepared.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Even if you're in a city though, too, right, But
- 23:28Speaker 1: that would That's the thing that terrified me. Like, imagine
- 23:30Speaker 1: being in New York and something was crazy was going on.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Imagine a horrible day, but at a nine to eleven
- 23:34Speaker 1: trying to get out of there.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Yeah, that's why I like on my channel. Everyone's in
- 23:39Speaker 2: different has different constraints in different life stages or scenarios
- 23:43Speaker 2: and budgetary limitations and job obligations or whatever. But man,
- 23:48Speaker 2: if you could get out of a city, do it,
- 23:51Speaker 2: I think it's like such a better I don't know.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Some people love the city. They just want their little
- 23:56Speaker 2: studio and they want to walk to ten different restaurants
- 23:59Speaker 2: or whatever, And I kind of get the appeal to that.
- 24:01Speaker 2: But man, there is nothing I like more than just
- 24:04Speaker 2: like walking outside and having quiet, like seeing trees and landscape,
- 24:11Speaker 2: and like being.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Able to water your plants in your underwear as a
- 24:14Speaker 1: luxury that most people don't understand.
- 24:16Speaker 2: My son almost exclusively, he's running around naked.
- 24:20Speaker 1: What a wonderful like childhood upbringing, I think being I'm
- 24:25Speaker 1: not gonna say being in the middle of nowhere, but
- 24:27Speaker 1: this homesteading concept usually comes with being a little more remote.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Yeah, but I.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Think that the quality of life is better.
- 24:35Speaker 2: I think so. And again it's tough. I get that
- 24:37Speaker 2: not everyone can do it, but it's yeah, and the
- 24:41Speaker 2: whole thing, like my son going out and grabbing some
- 24:44Speaker 2: eggs out of the coop or grabbing an apple off
- 24:47Speaker 2: the tree and eating it seems amazing to me.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Yeah, you have it. Obviously takes saving and it takes,
- 24:54Speaker 1: like you said, this was a ten year work towards it. Yeah.
- 24:56Speaker 1: None of these goals, whether they're a via all of
- 25:00Speaker 1: your dreams, the home of your dreams, or whatever, none
- 25:03Speaker 1: of this happens overnight. That's the one thing talking to
- 25:06Speaker 1: so many people being here, like the guy that has
- 25:09Speaker 1: a nice truck, It's all a journey, you know. I
- 25:12Speaker 1: think one of the really cool things about where we
- 25:14Speaker 1: live in our country is if you work your ass off,
- 25:17Speaker 1: you can probably do it.
- 25:18Speaker 2: America's great for that comes under fire for some things,
- 25:21Speaker 2: which I get, But if you are somewhat clever and
- 25:25Speaker 2: have somewhat of a work ethic. You can create any
- 25:29Speaker 2: life that you want.
- 25:30Speaker 1: I totally agree. Like, we've been watching house Hunters International,
- 25:34Speaker 1: Okay it's on Hulu, and what's these people that are
- 25:37Speaker 1: moving abroad and they find real estate or whatever. So
- 25:40Speaker 1: we've been like, oh, man, it'd be cool. We used
- 25:41Speaker 1: to live in Australia. I lived in Panama for a
- 25:43Speaker 1: little bit. You've been all over and I had this
- 25:46Speaker 1: realization that what am I actually trying to get. I'm
- 25:50Speaker 1: trying to get lifestyle. But you have the freedom to
- 25:53Speaker 1: do that lifestyle here. If you just want to work,
- 25:55Speaker 1: You're like, oh, I love in France they work five
- 25:58Speaker 1: hours a week in smokes cigarettes at breakfast. You can
- 26:01Speaker 1: actually do that here. People just don't.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Could do it. But it is that your suppressor in
- 26:06Speaker 2: that area.
- 26:07Speaker 1: Yeah, that rural life. I just man, like with Amazon
- 26:12Speaker 1: Prime and like, you can have anything you want delivered
- 26:16Speaker 1: to you. Some people get it, some people don't.
- 26:19Speaker 2: Yeah, and I get it's not for everyone, but man,
- 26:21Speaker 2: it should be. I love it.
- 26:23Speaker 1: So what's in your garage right now?
- 26:26Speaker 2: I have too many vehicles? Actually right now I feel you. Yeah,
- 26:30Speaker 2: I've just I've been I'm actually trying to downsize a bit.
- 26:33Speaker 2: I had a GTR for a bit. I actually just
- 26:35Speaker 2: sold that.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Could you like it?
- 26:37Speaker 2: I love the GTR, Yeah, it was my dream car,
- 26:40Speaker 2: Like I've always wanted R thirty five.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Well, it was like the Skyline had always been the
- 26:45Speaker 1: unobtainable car and if you were of that, like Grand
- 26:48Speaker 1: Turismo generation or Fast and Furious whatever, and then they
- 26:52Speaker 1: finally brought the R thirty five here.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Yeah, and I remember it was like R thirty four
- 26:56Speaker 2: is rad. R thirty two to thirty three is sweet,
- 26:59Speaker 2: But I really always one a R thirty five and
- 27:01Speaker 2: I was delivering pizza. Best one of them, it definitely is.
- 27:04Speaker 2: It doesn't have the character whatever. The older one's a
- 27:07Speaker 2: better car in everyone.
- 27:08Speaker 1: I know that everybody loses their mind over the R
- 27:11Speaker 1: thirty four GTR. Yeah, but I've been seeing I saw
- 27:14Speaker 1: one in person. Finally. They have a great front head
- 27:18Speaker 1: on profile, but the side profile is a little awkward.
- 27:21Speaker 2: There's just a regular car.
- 27:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:22Speaker 2: The interiors suck like the exterior. Yeah, if you romanticize
- 27:27Speaker 2: it and you're into it, they're awesome, but if a
- 27:30Speaker 2: normal we actually I saw one with my wife out
- 27:32Speaker 2: on the road and I was like, what R thirty four?
- 27:35Speaker 2: Which what are you looking at? There's nothing cool, There's
- 27:39Speaker 2: nothing cool in this direction. The GTR was great, is
- 27:42Speaker 2: my dream car. When they came out, I knew about
- 27:44Speaker 2: him and everything, but I delivered pizza to a guy
- 27:46Speaker 2: that had one in his driveway. First one I saw
- 27:50Speaker 2: in real life and I was walking up and I
- 27:52Speaker 2: was just I was like, holy, this is a GTR.
- 27:54Speaker 2: I've never seen one in person. And he saw me
- 27:56Speaker 2: through the window like looking at it, and he came out.
- 27:58Speaker 2: I was like, oh, yeah, just got you want. He's like,
- 28:01Speaker 2: let me sit and he wants to show it off obvious.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Yeah that's nice.
- 28:04Speaker 2: And at that moment, I was just like, one day, Yeah,
- 28:07Speaker 2: I finally achieved that goal. It was great. Had two kids,
- 28:12Speaker 2: I've got different and I wasn't driving it much and
- 28:15Speaker 2: it's just sitting.
- 28:15Speaker 1: And I've been through the phase of sports cars. I'm
- 28:17Speaker 1: still recovering. But the cool thing about the GTR that
- 28:20Speaker 1: you've had is you don't see that many of them,
- 28:23Speaker 1: Like I've become a Porsche guy. I do not own
- 28:28Speaker 1: a dental practice, but they're so common these days. Yeah. Great,
- 28:33Speaker 1: they're expensive and when you see a GTR, you're like, oh, man,
- 28:36Speaker 1: that's special.
- 28:37Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's you usually get someone who's a bit
- 28:40Speaker 2: of an enthusiast, like you're driving and it's like a douchebag.
- 28:43Speaker 2: Is you're just rich or.
- 28:45Speaker 1: What is it something he thought he should buy? But
- 28:47Speaker 1: he buy a GTR for the reason.
- 28:49Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's exotic and not like everyone. You go
- 28:52Speaker 2: to any car show and the kids GTR. God's I
- 28:56Speaker 2: get a picture any gas station I pulled up to,
- 28:58Speaker 2: people were stoked. And I've been at places where it's
- 29:01Speaker 2: like what's parked next to like a Lambo and a
- 29:03Speaker 2: Ferrari and people come and take pictures of the GTR
- 29:06Speaker 2: because it's something something. Anyway, I don't own that that
- 29:09Speaker 2: was special. I have this f five to fifty bus
- 29:12Speaker 2: that I'm basically going to turn into a poor man's
- 29:14Speaker 2: earth room or oh sweet cry, super single it and
- 29:17Speaker 2: I gutted it. It's a twenty eleven.
- 29:19Speaker 1: Oh this is a two thousand and eleve.
- 29:21Speaker 2: Oh is it okay?
- 29:22Speaker 1: So first, yeah, I have all of the motor and
- 29:24Speaker 1: driveline information.
- 29:26Speaker 2: I was shopping for these things and two rare things
- 29:30Speaker 2: that the shuttle buses don't usually have. So it has
- 29:32Speaker 2: the power stroke which most of them are gasers, and
- 29:35Speaker 2: has factory four will drive, which almost none of them have.
- 29:39Speaker 2: So I bought that and it's just been sitting. But
- 29:40Speaker 2: I'm going to be working on that this summer. I
- 29:43Speaker 2: recently This is coming out in a couple of weeks,
- 29:45Speaker 2: so people will know by then. But I've I just
- 29:48Speaker 2: bought a F four fifty that twenty nineteen that I'm
- 29:52Speaker 2: going to super single and just.
- 29:53Speaker 1: Those are really dual when you run them in like
- 29:56Speaker 1: a square setup.
- 29:57Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what I'm going to do.
- 29:58Speaker 1: And then you can do the over flair fenders in
- 30:01Speaker 1: the front.
- 30:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:02Speaker 1: They have so much presence.
- 30:03Speaker 2: Yeah. And then it's the tires or swaps. Is it
- 30:06Speaker 2: a pickup?
- 30:07Speaker 1: Pick up?
- 30:07Speaker 2: Cool? Yeah, So it's not derated or anything.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Problem with the five fifties yeah, which.
- 30:13Speaker 2: I did a lot of research cab chassis versus truck chassis.
- 30:15Speaker 2: Some like pretty educated in that world. Now I have
- 30:18Speaker 2: a twenty twenty four Tacoma.
- 30:20Speaker 1: Tacoma's are actually good. I talked mad about the third
- 30:23Speaker 1: gen because they were just Toyota was always like under
- 30:26Speaker 1: attack by everybody, and for once they didn't have the
- 30:29Speaker 1: best product. But the new one, it looks good. The
- 30:32Speaker 1: build quality seems really good.
- 30:33Speaker 2: I have no complaint. Light Year is better driving experience
- 30:37Speaker 2: than the third gen that a third gen thirty fives
- 30:40Speaker 2: geared did everything to it that I could. My twenty
- 30:44Speaker 2: twenty four is the hybrid on thirty sevens and not geared.
- 30:48Speaker 2: Drive is incredible, he said, Yeah, it's a little that's all.
- 30:52Speaker 1: It's a good sized truck. Now you'll figure it out
- 30:55Speaker 1: when you start really driving this four to fifty more.
- 30:57Speaker 1: The cool thing with the four fifties it has that
- 30:59Speaker 1: wide track, apple sharp like. Honestly, the Roamer is pretty maneuverable. Yeah,
- 31:05Speaker 1: you need two parking spaces. Why it's big. There's parking
- 31:08Speaker 1: spaces you just can't fit into. Yeah, Tacoma is such
- 31:10Speaker 1: a perfect size.
- 31:11Speaker 2: It's good. So I yeah, the Tacoma have a twenty
- 31:14Speaker 2: four Tundra as well. Speaking turning radius, my crew Max
- 31:18Speaker 2: short bed Tundra has a wider turning radius than my
- 31:22Speaker 2: eight foot bed duly f four fifty. Yeah, my four
- 31:26Speaker 2: to fifty turns tighter than the Tundra. So much bigger truck.
- 31:29Speaker 1: I think they're the axles underneath it. Yeah, are a
- 31:34Speaker 1: delivery truck.
- 31:35Speaker 2: Axle breaks super suspension. Yeah, payload out to Wazoo toes
- 31:41Speaker 2: three times as much as the Tundra turns sharper gets
- 31:44Speaker 2: better fuel mile.
- 31:46Speaker 1: I don't know. Does the nineteen have the ten speed
- 31:48Speaker 1: or the six six speeds? Still?
- 31:50Speaker 2: Yeah, there's pros and cons.
- 31:52Speaker 1: Yeah, people are saying the early ten speeds weren't really sorted.
- 31:56Speaker 2: The six speeds are supposed to be pretty bomb proof.
- 31:59Speaker 2: The ten speeds are small, their shift better in the
- 32:01Speaker 2: power ban lit.
- 32:02Speaker 1: I can be in like one hundred and twenty degrees
- 32:04Speaker 1: in the earth room. The six speed that's in the
- 32:07Speaker 1: fort so yeah, one hundred and ninety two degrees all
- 32:10Speaker 1: day long. It doesn't matter, it doesn't overheat, it's smooth.
- 32:14Speaker 2: Yeah. The six seven paired with the six speed does
- 32:16Speaker 2: it pretty sordid? I have a sixty series land Cruiser.
- 32:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember the eighty. It's the brown one.
- 32:20Speaker 2: That one's pretty cool. They've been sitting in.
- 32:22Speaker 1: Your for me with cars probably Yeah.
- 32:26Speaker 2: Yeah. I got Alex five seventy. That's pretty nice. I
- 32:31Speaker 2: got a golf r ooh, the golfer is cool. It
- 32:34Speaker 2: replaced it.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Though, which amount of why do you do the performance?
- 32:38Speaker 1: Got a long See, I did the performance and I
- 32:40Speaker 1: think that I would do the long range next.
- 32:42Speaker 2: I'm going to do the acceleration boost with the long range,
- 32:45Speaker 2: so it'll.
- 32:45Speaker 1: Be like, oh, the suspension, the performance beats you up,
- 32:51Speaker 1: and that twenty a little more comfortable. The twenty one,
- 32:54Speaker 1: I think they're twenty one. The big it's the performance
- 32:57Speaker 1: gets the big wheel so much more complixing. I mean
- 32:59Speaker 1: it's twenty.
- 33:00Speaker 2: I think you can get both twenty ones.
- 33:01Speaker 1: Or yeah, we have the big wheels. Its way rougher.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Yeah, mine's pretty comfortable, like more sidewall, little absorbed books,
- 33:10Speaker 2: a little better, your suspensions a little more too. If
- 33:12Speaker 2: you're tracking your car, yours would crush it. But daily
- 33:15Speaker 2: driving the long range.
- 33:17Speaker 1: It's my Greyhound transport code. Do you use the dog mode?
- 33:20Speaker 2: It for the kids. It for the kids more like
- 33:24Speaker 2: they fall asleep in the car when we get home.
- 33:26Speaker 2: The nice thing is like no emissions. We come home,
- 33:28Speaker 2: we park in the driveway, kids are asleep. Set the temp,
- 33:31Speaker 2: crack the door, listen for them. Yeah, just let them
- 33:34Speaker 2: sleep for a while. We're not pumping exhaust into the garage.
- 33:37Speaker 1: And there's no like hot engine. There's no exhaust heat
- 33:41Speaker 1: soaked the underneath of the car.
- 33:43Speaker 2: They can't crawl under touch something whatever.
- 33:45Speaker 1: Living in Arizona, I don't know how I did it
- 33:48Speaker 1: without an EV and Arizona seems to like everybody here
- 33:51Speaker 1: hates evs. I'm like, dude, it's the Model wise, the
- 33:54Speaker 1: most American made car money can buy. It's one of
- 33:57Speaker 1: the few international Inner prizes outside of technology where we're
- 34:02Speaker 1: seriously competitive. Root for the home team, man.
- 34:04Speaker 2: Yeah, that's how I feel too. Us jobs and the
- 34:10Speaker 2: it's hard to beat. Also, the tech, like the full
- 34:11Speaker 2: self driving is so I don't really use it much,
- 34:13Speaker 2: but I just tried it to try.
- 34:15Speaker 1: It so good because they were doing that like subscription.
- 34:18Speaker 2: Yeah I got a free when I bought it for
- 34:20Speaker 2: a bit, but I didn't pay the eight thousand for
- 34:22Speaker 2: it all the time. The app is so good, like
- 34:24Speaker 2: century Mode so good, being able to like just remotely
- 34:28Speaker 2: view the camera the UI. It's like an iPad.
- 34:30Speaker 1: Just it's always every like couple of weeks ago out
- 34:33Speaker 1: and your car has new features, like they.
- 34:34Speaker 2: Changed their updates. Your car gets better. Yeah they're not.
- 34:38Speaker 2: They don't lock it down to make you buy the
- 34:40Speaker 2: new model. Let's just push it out to everyone. I
- 34:42Speaker 2: got the Model Y, and then I have a second
- 34:46Speaker 2: gen Sequoia.
- 34:47Speaker 1: Okay, Kakoia is underrated. I just don't know much about them.
- 34:51Speaker 2: Yes, so I had a first gen Sequoia. I liked it,
- 34:54Speaker 2: and then X five seventy similar the second gen. If
- 34:57Speaker 2: so we had another kid. So we have three kids total,
- 35:00Speaker 2: two dogs. Like decent sized family, and I want an excursion,
- 35:04Speaker 2: but it was too big for my wife.
- 35:06Speaker 1: I have no idea why four. It doesn't bring that back.
- 35:08Speaker 1: I grew up in an excursion. That's why I like
- 35:11Speaker 1: that eleven to sixteen super Duty because it still has
- 35:14Speaker 1: the old body. That thing would sell like hotcakes, hot
- 35:17Speaker 1: and forums. Gas prices went out, people started to become
- 35:20Speaker 1: more environmentally conscious. Yeah, it's a short bed, single cab frame, like,
- 35:25Speaker 1: it's not actually that big.
- 35:27Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a two fifty, but it's smaller than the Tundra.
- 35:30Speaker 2: It's moller than a crew cab Tundra.
- 35:32Speaker 1: The dudes that are running around in f two fifty
- 35:34Speaker 1: three fifty Platinum Lariat, King Ranch whatever, Super Duties, if
- 35:38Speaker 1: you gave them an option for the excursion.
- 35:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it toes well, solid action the front
- 35:45Speaker 2: and rear that both the Triton and the seven to
- 35:48Speaker 2: three that came in and go forever. Yeah, they're just
- 35:50Speaker 2: a but my wife did it. I was like, babe,
- 35:53Speaker 2: it's literally smaller parks, better turns, sharper than the Tundra.
- 35:58Speaker 2: It's not that, but she didn't want it. So the
- 36:02Speaker 2: second gen Sequoya is Toyota's best people move outside of
- 36:06Speaker 2: the minivan. Toyota's best people move by far. It's like
- 36:10Speaker 2: cavernous interior. You can travel around like in it easy,
- 36:15Speaker 2: it drives nice, it's not as wheelable, independent front rear
- 36:19Speaker 2: suspension on it. It's a good people outside of a minivan.
- 36:22Speaker 1: Hell's gate every day.
- 36:23Speaker 2: Oh you're not just driving it around and sometimes going
- 36:26Speaker 2: on some fire roads with it or whatever. But it's
- 36:29Speaker 2: so much better than.
- 36:30Speaker 1: That's probably a super where you're going.
- 36:34Speaker 2: But that one's pretty nice and it's got the five
- 36:37Speaker 2: to seven. So I have a couple of vehicles with
- 36:38Speaker 2: the five step Toyota's five to seven, which I like. I'
- 36:41Speaker 2: the one that's in the GFC booth, my regular cab
- 36:44Speaker 2: short bed two thousand and seven Tundra.
- 36:46Speaker 1: Okay, sweet, yeah, I want to downside which one's your favorite?
- 36:52Speaker 2: I think the four to fifty will be my favorite.
- 36:54Speaker 1: I think that the thing with the four fifties. It
- 36:56Speaker 1: feels special.
- 36:57Speaker 2: Yeah, And the reason I got it, like I go
- 37:00Speaker 2: to rent a mini excavator or something in the tundra
- 37:02Speaker 2: and they'd be like, can't do it. Yeah, like that
- 37:05Speaker 2: you need it at least a three quarter ton to
- 37:07Speaker 2: get And I was like, you know what, I don't
- 37:10Speaker 2: want to be turned down for anything ever again. I
- 37:14Speaker 2: want to be the guy saying, cute truck to the
- 37:17Speaker 2: other guys.
- 37:17Speaker 1: I can still park next to you. Yeah.
- 37:20Speaker 2: So there was some of that, but I think I'll
- 37:23Speaker 2: like that truck a lot. And it's again trying to
- 37:24Speaker 2: parallel park it in the city or anything like.
- 37:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 37:27Speaker 1: I am currently pickupless really for the first time and
- 37:31Speaker 1: some time I couldn't imagine, but I'm thinking about getting
- 37:34Speaker 1: a K car like a K truck.
- 37:36Speaker 2: They just became legal to drive on the road in Colorado.
- 37:39Speaker 2: Like I know they have been in Arizona. There's thirty
- 37:41Speaker 2: states you can get them, but just this last week
- 37:44Speaker 2: they became legal in Colorado. I want to do this
- 37:47Speaker 2: thing that's for fun on the four fifty with the
- 37:50Speaker 2: eight foot bed. I want to put a diamondback cover
- 37:52Speaker 2: on it, put it on forties and then just for
- 37:56Speaker 2: a show for fun, get a k truck, park it
- 37:59Speaker 2: on top the tent on it. It's a cool display
- 38:04Speaker 2: of what you could.
- 38:05Speaker 1: Because they're probably like seven or eight feet long.
- 38:07Speaker 2: They're not yeah, they're like ten or eleven feet long,
- 38:10Speaker 2: but your wheelbase would just fit on the eight foot bed.
- 38:13Speaker 2: I'm pretty sure. I know they fit in an eight
- 38:15Speaker 2: foot bed, and they're they're like thousand pounds and I
- 38:18Speaker 2: just take it.
- 38:19Speaker 1: I had one of those I back things on my
- 38:21Speaker 1: Prospector and it was like, very usable. Do I want
- 38:25Speaker 1: a bed cover like a camper shell like a GFC
- 38:29Speaker 1: or something like that, And I'm like, eah, but I'm
- 38:31Speaker 1: never really going to camp in it, So then do
- 38:33Speaker 1: I do a topper? I don't really want to spend
- 38:36Speaker 1: like that much money in a topper, but this was
- 38:38Speaker 1: cool because I had the bike crack on top with
- 38:40Speaker 1: a little crossbars. I put one one up racks on
- 38:43Speaker 1: top of the crossbars so I can put my bikes
- 38:45Speaker 1: and stuff on top, and I still had all my storage.
- 38:47Speaker 2: Yeah, they're surprisingly usable. Yeah, you can like because you
- 38:50Speaker 2: can do a costco run or whatever and it's if
- 38:53Speaker 2: it's raining or whatnot, it's protected. Or throw some guns
- 38:56Speaker 2: in the back and nobody really sees them. You could
- 38:59Speaker 2: take it off if you to go get some dirt,
- 39:01Speaker 2: You could put racks on it, throw stuff off. They
- 39:03Speaker 2: have a kind of a toolbox feature where you can
- 39:05Speaker 2: open the front cab and have a toolbox up there.
- 39:08Speaker 2: So they're pretty functional for kind of like a daily
- 39:10Speaker 2: driver that's going to see mixed use. But yeah, I
- 39:13Speaker 2: think probably four point fifty, Like I drive the testa
- 39:16Speaker 2: the most, but I think the fourth about.
- 39:18Speaker 1: The Calderman setup, that's pretty good.
- 39:21Speaker 2: I need to figure out what it's like.
- 39:23Speaker 1: You're going like full you got you're like committing if
- 39:27Speaker 1: you didn't like these wheels and tires, Yeah, I actually
- 39:31Speaker 1: have like sixty eight mile an hour speed, right.
- 39:33Speaker 2: I bought a set of on marketplace actually tease, Okay, yeah,
- 39:38Speaker 2: it was such a good deal because they came with
- 39:40Speaker 2: the super single wheels. I think they're the ebl designed
- 39:43Speaker 2: wheels with the continentals unused. For five grand, it's like
- 39:48Speaker 2: half half off of what.
- 39:49Speaker 1: You would Yeah, that sounds like a lot of money,
- 39:52Speaker 1: but the tires can be.
- 39:55Speaker 2: Yeah, so you like you get the setup, it's like
- 39:57Speaker 2: a thousand dollars wheel, thousand dollars tire pay for mounting
- 39:59Speaker 2: and balancing, pay for shipping it. You're looking at over
- 40:02Speaker 2: ten thousand dollars to buy those and these were essentially
- 40:05Speaker 2: new local down the street from me. So and I'm
- 40:10Speaker 2: going to do I'm going to use them either on
- 40:13Speaker 2: the bus or the F four fifty.
- 40:17Speaker 1: What are the what are I'm going to I'm gonna
- 40:19Speaker 1: do some rapid fire things people. Three things that every
- 40:24Speaker 1: Overlanders should keep in their.
- 40:25Speaker 2: Car medkit, probably just for daily.
- 40:30Speaker 1: Use, not using exft you it can be for somebody else.
- 40:33Speaker 2: Yeah, you're driving in a car. People getting car accidents
- 40:35Speaker 2: all the time.
- 40:35Speaker 1: What's your favorite medkit right now?
- 40:37Speaker 2: I have Dark Angel Medical I fact, so it's more
- 40:41Speaker 2: of a trauma centric as tourniquits and some you know,
- 40:45Speaker 2: knowledged and used that a little bit. You can watch
- 40:47Speaker 2: the YouTube videos. I've taken some training courses and whatnot.
- 40:50Speaker 2: So I think medical kit's good. I think a jumpstarter.
- 40:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I use like the ones carry with me. I'm
- 40:56Speaker 1: sure there's other.
- 40:57Speaker 2: A bunch of them out there. He's like a fantic on.
- 41:00Speaker 2: I have a Coo one as well, but I use
- 41:02Speaker 2: them more often than not for other people's vehic.
- 41:05Speaker 1: When Scott and I were driving up to over the
- 41:07Speaker 1: next bow. We had to jump a lady that battery
- 41:10Speaker 1: had died.
- 41:10Speaker 2: And then the third thing. I don't know, there's probably
- 41:16Speaker 2: just all generalized recovery gear. I guess, like even if
- 41:22Speaker 2: you have a car, have a have the knowledge to
- 41:24Speaker 2: know where your little screw thing is and maybe have
- 41:26Speaker 2: a soft shackle so.
- 41:28Speaker 1: There'll be like a little cap on your bumper and
- 41:30Speaker 1: you have to thread this islet in.
- 41:32Speaker 2: Yeah, and it'll be by your jack or under your seat.
- 41:35Speaker 2: It's really the only recovery point on a car. I
- 41:37Speaker 2: only mention it because a truck usually has recovery points.
- 41:40Speaker 1: You never attach a recovery strap to a toe hitch ball,
- 41:45Speaker 1: like the ball not meant to take a load. That
- 41:47Speaker 1: way kills people in Australia because if they use a
- 41:50Speaker 1: lot of kinetic recovery, there.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Big ball launching right back at you. So soft shackles
- 41:54Speaker 2: are easy and good.
- 41:56Speaker 1: I lately have been trying to pare down, particularly the Grenadier,
- 42:01Speaker 1: to like the minimum amount for the maximum impact, and
- 42:05Speaker 1: I have gone down to just a winch extension strap
- 42:09Speaker 1: and three soft shackles because I carry that with me everywhere,
- 42:14Speaker 1: and I'm like, okay, if I'm doing something that requires
- 42:16Speaker 1: like a kinetic strap, rope, rigging, snatch block whatever. I
- 42:22Speaker 1: know that I'm getting into that. Where with this, I
- 42:24Speaker 1: can pull somebody out of a ditch slowly like I
- 42:28Speaker 1: can tow a car. And then I always say three
- 42:32Speaker 1: soft shackles, so if one breaks, you.
- 42:34Speaker 2: Just have some or you sometime had to rig some
- 42:37Speaker 2: weird stuff around someone's axle or something to get them
- 42:40Speaker 2: shut out. So yeah, i'd say that handles most of
- 42:42Speaker 2: the kind of like relatively minor recoveries.
- 42:46Speaker 1: So I just can't thank you enough for coming on.
- 42:49Speaker 1: Where can people follow you learn more about what you're doing.
- 42:53Speaker 2: Yeah, so you could just google Last Line of Defense
- 42:56Speaker 2: and it's probably all me, but yeah, Last Line of
- 42:59Speaker 2: Defense on YouTube. For Last Line of Defense on Instagram
- 43:02Speaker 2: one word, or have a website l lood dot us
- 43:06Speaker 2: some stuff on there, a small Holster company.
- 43:08Speaker 1: Okay, thank you so much. I hope you enjoyed this
- 43:11Speaker 1: episode of the Overlin Journal podcast with Mike Pfeiffer from
- 43:15Speaker 1: Last Line of Defense. Thanks for listening.
- 43:17Speaker 2: We'll see you next time, all right, take care,
