- 0:00So many of our favors to watch. Oh look, now they're being
- 0:05bashed. I guess that's what we should
- 0:09expect on the Bullied Nostalgia Podcast.
- 0:15Hello to all of you out there. You're joining the Bullied
- 0:19Nostalgia Podcast at the most approachable time of the year.
- 0:25Wow. That's right.
- 0:26If you're a long term listener, I learned from last year and
- 0:30this is going to be the most newbie friendly season premiere
- 0:34ever. If you're new.
- 0:36Bullied Nostalgia is a place where we rewatch movies and TV
- 0:40shows from our formative years as adults and discuss if they
- 0:45hold up. Our cast is made-up of two
- 0:48different generations, so there's often some time spent
- 0:51poking holes in the quality of each other's childhoods.
- 0:55We're just kicking off our fifth season, so if you enjoy today's
- 1:00episode, check out the rest of our stuff.
- 1:03We have episodes of all kinds for all different walks of life.
- 1:08Including bad ones. For bad.
- 1:11Walks of life, mostly. Bad ones, yeah.
- 1:13For bad Boys, two tickets to Elmo, please.
- 1:19With that out of the way, let's introduce the Bullied Pod crew.
- 1:23I'm Tim and I'm joined by my brother John.
- 1:27Hello, to make this an easy listener experience if it's your
- 1:31first time. I'm 6 foot 2 1/2 inches, I have
- 1:35a beard, I'm a brunette and I weigh about 197 lbs.
- 1:39Wow. Are you bad?
- 1:41John, that's a healthy weight. Good job.
- 1:44Well, yeah, healthy for me, but BMI says otherwise.
- 1:48Really. BMI says I'm obese.
- 1:50Well this is very off topic, but BMI is not perfect by any means.
- 1:55No, I know, I know. Generally, any way of
- 1:58categorizing and ranking people was made to be racist.
- 2:03There is some. Truth.
- 2:04Ever say something in the podcast and wonder if it's going
- 2:07to get cut? Oh no, this is getting cut for
- 2:08sure. But I just, I thought it was
- 2:09interesting to talk. Who's wondering?
- 2:11Wait, what if we fit? Said I was.
- 2:15Then that's correct. Sorry, I hate to break it to
- 2:18you. We fit to lie.
- 2:20OK, well now it has to stay because.
- 2:23It depends on how much we talk about.
- 2:25We just have to keep talking about this and eventually it
- 2:28must stay in the regard. If we keep coming back to this
- 2:33joke, that has to keep it all in or else the jokes don't make
- 2:37sense. Yeah.
- 2:37And my 2 adult kids chance. Hi, to make this easy on you I'm
- 2:42not going to say anything about me and stop right here.
- 2:45And. Kylie, I'm making this difficult
- 2:47on you. John is 198 lbs. 9797.
- 2:54He's. Gaining weight Are you trying to
- 2:56making me morbidly. Before we get into today's
- 3:01episode, it's customary that we do some housekeeping stuff at
- 3:05this point. We are now on every type of
- 3:09social, so you can get a hold of us pretty much anywhere.
- 3:12But if you have some feedback or ideas on ways we can improve our
- 3:17show, we would love to hear from you.
- 3:19None of us are professional podcasters, so we're always
- 3:23looking for ways to make the show better.
- 3:25Honestly, not professionals who told you that.
- 3:28You hit us up at bulliedpod@gmail.com for your
- 3:31feedback. If you love what we're doing
- 3:34here, we appreciate every like, follow and share you send our
- 3:38way and we also have plenty of merch.
- 3:41It's available at redbubble.com by searching Bulliedpod.
- 3:46What makes someone a professional podcaster?
- 3:48If they make a living off of it. I think it's when you sell your
- 3:53first supplement to become a professional.
- 3:55Yeah, yeah. They have to be able to be sell
- 3:57outs. You have to have that option
- 4:01available. Yeah, you don't have to live off
- 4:04of your podcast, but you have to have the opportunity to.
- 4:07Sell out. Yeah, exactly.
- 4:09Is anybody really chomping in the bit to sell our merch?
- 4:12Have we gotten any new emails that say hey we want to sponsor?
- 4:18No, in the last couple months here I've added our Reels and
- 4:23shorts to YouTube and Instagram and stuff like that, and so
- 4:29we're getting 10s of thousands of views on those things every
- 4:33month. It's surprising how close we are
- 4:35monetizing some of these, so. Yeah, deeply.
- 4:37Unsettling. Short form content rarely has
- 4:40people that come back again and again.
- 4:43Some people are finding our podcast from these things and
- 4:46those are getting traction, but those are are really just like
- 4:49the hits. Anyways, Lastly, we're excited
- 4:53to announce that we have an upcoming episode that will be
- 4:56decided by your votes. It's between Lego, Clutch
- 5:01Powers, Mom and Dad, Save the World, and Speed Racer.
- 5:06Please hit up the poll and vote. I'll try and have links in the
- 5:10comments or attached to this episode in some way.
- 5:13If people wanted us to watch Spy Hard a second time, is that an
- 5:17option? No, because that's such a
- 5:22terrible idea that it would somehow win.
- 5:26Yeah. We know how it would win John,
- 5:29and it's called Boss. All right, and with that, let's
- 5:33get into today's episode. Today we are tackling 1991's
- 5:39Bucky O'Hare Chance. Who is Bucky O'Hare and what is
- 5:44this cartoon about? Bucky, Captain Bucky O'Hare.
- 5:48Oh yeah, Bucky O'Hare. He's an alien rabbit from the
- 5:52planet Warren who drives a spaceship called the Righteous
- 5:58Indignation. I'm going to say a lot of
- 6:00slander about this show, but The Righteous Indignation is an
- 6:03awesome spaceship name. I'm just going to get that out
- 6:05before things really tank from here.
- 6:07I mean, he lives in an alternate reality from ours called the
- 6:11Anniverse where he and his crew fight the toads, which I think
- 6:17are Cap. But honestly, you would assume
- 6:20that there's some commentary on the natural world as we know it
- 6:25in the modern era, where everything is run by an AI and
- 6:28all we are is consumers, doomed to live as it wills and with the
- 6:33help of Willie the Wit, a charming young boy from our
- 6:36dimension who I. Think is the smartest person in
- 6:39the universe? They're able to defeat the
- 6:42toads. Willie was taken from our Earth
- 6:45and now is helping them. He's coming back and forth
- 6:49between the two worlds, helping and also dealing with school
- 6:53life. Yeah, it's kind.
- 6:55Of like having a secret identity, how Peter Parker has
- 6:58to deal with his teenage life on the side.
- 7:02It's the same thing for Willie DeWitt, except instead of
- 7:04putting on a spider costume, he's teaming up with ducks and
- 7:09baboons and cats. And he puts on like the skin of
- 7:13an old baboon. Yeah.
- 7:16Supposed to be a battle. I think it is armor, but it is.
- 7:20Imagine if our astronauts wore space suits that had a perfect
- 7:25imprint of their face. John it's not the dead baboon,
- 7:29because the dead baboon is sucked into a wormhole, into
- 7:32another dimension, and then we never.
- 7:33Said he didn't suck his skin. Off that guy got his full blast
- 7:37first episode. He vanishes through a wormhole,
- 7:40the same wormhole that allows Willie to join the rest of the
- 7:43crew. The whole gimmick is that later
- 7:45they're supposed to find him, but they didn't have enough show
- 7:49for that. Oh, so that was intentional.
- 7:51They just couldn't get around to it.
- 7:53I think there is an episode where he's supposed to.
- 7:55Yeah, so there is an episode where they managed to team up
- 7:59with him, communicate with him across the universe, but they
- 8:03never rescue him because the show got cancelled before they
- 8:06ever got to that story arc. And maybe it's helpful to
- 8:09explain who the characters are. Yeah.
- 8:12I was going to give a little bit more context, so think of Bucky
- 8:15O'Hare, kind of like Star Wars with animals and.
- 8:20And Brooks money almost kind of like Starfall.
- 8:25Starfox is actually a very good analogy.
- 8:27Chances is targeted to you. This show is 321 Penguins.
- 8:31No, it is not 321 Penguins is an intentional Star Trek spoof.
- 8:36I have a toddler. I've been watching a lot of
- 8:39three doing Penguins recently. OK, let's lean into the Star
- 8:42Wars Starfox vibe. This show is about an oppressive
- 8:48empire, a planet of toads who get controlled by AI and forced
- 8:55to try and conquer the rest of the Galaxy.
- 8:58And so the rest of the animals, mostly mammals, they try and
- 9:03fight back, but there's only one ship of the whole military of
- 9:09the rest of the Galaxy, and it's captained by Bucky O'Hare, who's
- 9:14as we a rabbit. He has a first mate named Jenny,
- 9:18who's a cat, but also like a space witch, kind of like a
- 9:22Jedi. And then you have Blinky, who is
- 9:26their Android and science officer.
- 9:29You've got Bruiser, the Beetlejuician baboon, who's a
- 9:33big monkey who is their commando.
- 9:37And then Deadeye Duck their daffy duck is their daffy duck.
- 9:42Is there pirate weapons? Computer.
- 9:46Joke. The joke about calling him Daffy
- 9:48Duck is that he is Daffy Duck with four arms and an eye patch.
- 9:53I think Daffy Duck comes with a sense of like, oh, he's kind of
- 9:56silly. Jedi is just a murderer.
- 9:58You guys, Yeah. He seems really prevalent to
- 10:01committing heinous crimes. Like Ducky's on the good side,
- 10:05but definitely one of those like.
- 10:07Hey, we got this. Bad guy to work for us kind of
- 10:09vibe. Yeah, he used to be a pirate and
- 10:13he joined Bucky's 'cause there are episodes with the pirate
- 10:17fleet that we didn't watch. But I mean, give you guys a
- 10:21little bit more back story to what Bucky O'Hare is.
- 10:24This came out in 1991 and it is not a Ninja Turtles RIP off, but
- 10:32wow, you would think so. Like at this time everything was
- 10:37a Ninja Turtles RIP off. What animal could mutate?
- 10:39OK, let's get Battle Toads front and center.
- 10:42Let's get St. Sharks out there.
- 10:44Anything that was an animal turned into a human was what we
- 10:49went crazy for. But this show was actually
- 10:53created by Larry Hama as early as 1974.
- 10:59Wow, nobody wanted it, He. Designed these characters way
- 11:06before any of us were alive, and he sat on them forever.
- 11:12DC Comics had created a program where they would publish
- 11:16creators comics and let them keep the rights, but they
- 11:20couldn't come to an agreement. And so Bucky O'Hare didn't end
- 11:24up in a comic book until 1984, which is actually the same year
- 11:31that Eastman and Laird put Ninja Turtles in a comic book for the
- 11:35first time. So Bucky O'Hare and his team
- 11:38are, it's hard to prove, but probably older than the Ninja
- 11:42Turtles. And he had a vision for this
- 11:45stuff from the start. If you look at the comic books
- 11:49as far back as 1984, the characters all had peg holes in
- 11:54their feet. He had planned to make a toy
- 11:56line. Wow, all the way back.
- 11:59I don't feel like that's something that you need to
- 12:00justify in the lore, but OK. And one of the cool things, I
- 12:05don't know if you remember this, John, about our toys, all of the
- 12:09guns had holes in them and they all had pegs on them so you
- 12:15could clip the guns to them. So their outfits were designed
- 12:19under this idea that they were always intended to be toys.
- 12:24Regardless, Larry Hama is very famous in the comic book
- 12:28community. He's famous for a lot of things,
- 12:31but the biggest thing that you will ever hear is that all of
- 12:37the GI Joe comics were Larry Hama.
- 12:40He essentially designed these characters, then instead of
- 12:45doing anything with them, he went and worked on GI Joe for
- 12:49decades and here he is finally getting to make the characters
- 12:54that he designed. Hasbro needed something to
- 12:57compete with Playmates because Playmates had Ninja Turtle toys
- 13:01on every aisle, so they went all in on his Bucky O'Hare idea.
- 13:05So they made the toys the same size as Ninja Turtles so you can
- 13:09mix and match them. What do you guys think?
- 13:12Does it feel like this could coexist with Ninja Turtles so
- 13:15that it could beat Ninja Turtles or this is just feels like a RIP
- 13:19off? When I first was like really
- 13:22looking at the characters in the show, they look like they are
- 13:27art of characters. I would see in a blog post from
- 13:3113 years ago saying this is my own OC from this other show.
- 13:37They feel like they are somebody's copy.
- 13:39They feel like Sonic cartoon OC is for.
- 13:42Exactly. Especially Jenny.
- 13:44Yeah, You had mentioned before we watched this show that you
- 13:48thought it was like the Sonic cartoon.
- 13:52Do you still feel that? I don't remember what the
- 13:55freedom fighters were like, but I would assume.
- 13:58I think anthropomorphic animals, the 80s, it kind of exploded in
- 14:04a way that it had never been present before.
- 14:07And so I think there's just a lot of properties in the 80s and
- 14:10then even in the early 90s where it's all about, hey, we could do
- 14:14the show with humans, but why not put animals in their place?
- 14:18Dad, you said. Would we have thought that this
- 14:21show could compete? And I would say the big thing is
- 14:24no. And now don't get me along.
- 14:27There are a lot of stuff about this show I really like.
- 14:30Theme song is so much fun. I mentioned before Righteous
- 14:33Indignation. He's a killer name for a
- 14:35spaceship. It's so fun.
- 14:37Yeah, I found really having a hard time liking any of the main
- 14:43cast, especially Bucky. The show is named after him, but
- 14:48man, he's just so nothing. And since he's the front lines,
- 14:54he's almost in every scene. You really need him to be a
- 14:57strong, likable character. Original Ninja Turtles are
- 15:00probably not the best Ninja Turtle cartoon that's ever come
- 15:02out, but people still like Leonardo.
- 15:05They liked Rafael, Donatello, Michelangelo, each in their own
- 15:07way. This show just struggles to have
- 15:10any likable characters. Ninja Turtles has had the luxury
- 15:13of being interpreted 20 times, and so if we compare just the
- 15:17original Bucky O'Hare cartoon with the original Ninja Turtles
- 15:21cartoon, it's hard to compare them when we've just gotten to
- 15:24see so many more iterations of Ninja Turtles.
- 15:27I would agree that I think Bucky O'Hare isn't that interesting to
- 15:32watch. He's cool, can do everything.
- 15:36I'm much more interested in watching his crew.
- 15:39Yeah. Kind of mentioned that Deadeye
- 15:41is just Daffy Duck again, but I like it more than most of the
- 15:45other characters. Like there's a scene in one of
- 15:47the episodes where Deadeye has a moment of like, why should I
- 15:52really do this? Because he finds a bunch of cash
- 15:55in Willie's bag and he pockets it.
- 15:57He's like, I'm a pirate. I guess it's mine now.
- 16:00It's a fun moment. If this character actually cares
- 16:03about things and has internal conflict, it feels impossible
- 16:06for Bucky to have any of that. Yeah, there's this one scene
- 16:10where there is a bounty hunter that's trying to trick them and
- 16:14then I he's like, oh, I don't think we should trust this guy.
- 16:18You're getting a lot of vibes from him that he's suspicious.
- 16:21But then the entire crew agrees with him, except for Bucky, and
- 16:26Bucky's like, no, you're going to listen to me because what I.
- 16:30Say is he's not racist. I'm not.
- 16:33So it's like a really weird scene because I don't know who I
- 16:35should agree with. Should I agree with Bucky
- 16:37because he's not racist? Everybody distrust this guy
- 16:40because he is a dinosaur. Because they're racist.
- 16:44He's not furry, he's a sleazosaur.
- 16:47Yeah, he's a sleazosaur, so his species is known for being
- 16:50sleazy. Nobody trust him and you're
- 16:53like, OK, so this is like a racism thing.
- 16:56And then Bucky is proven to be wrong.
- 16:58So it's like, what did we learn? That racism is good?
- 17:02Everybody's mad about racism until it turns out to be right.
- 17:07Maybe. Sleazy means something else in
- 17:09their Galaxy. Maybe that's a good point to
- 17:13just talk about the bad guy. Characters.
- 17:15So that's where I want to disagree with you.
- 17:18Chance I can see how none of the heroic characters of that
- 17:22likable, but I have to say that I think the villains in this
- 17:27show are great. Toad Borg.
- 17:30Toad Borg. What a.
- 17:31Fun idea is awesome. When we were watching the first
- 17:35episode, I was like, oh, I do not like the villain.
- 17:38I felt like the show was listening to me and they were
- 17:41like, oh shoot, this villain sucks.
- 17:43Time to introduce a new cooler villain.
- 17:46And then Toad Borg smashed through the room so.
- 17:49For our listeners, Toad Borg is a toad.
- 17:54He's been turned into a giant robot, and what's neat about
- 17:57this is he has all of the flaws, fears and imperfections of a
- 18:04toad, but an impenetrable superhuman body.
- 18:10Except for the fact that he doesn't seem to be afraid of
- 18:12baboons. No, he doesn't.
- 18:14He does. He has a moment in one of the
- 18:16episodes where he goes a baboon and he's like, wait a minute,
- 18:19no, I'm a super being, I can do this.
- 18:21And he goes toe to toe with them.
- 18:23So what they're both referring to here for our listeners is in
- 18:28the show. Biologically.
- 18:31Yeah, the toads are essentially genetically red with this deep
- 18:37rooted fear of baboons and. They were like natural
- 18:41predators, and then they both evolved to civilized beings.
- 18:45Do these creatures have environmental factors from other
- 18:49planets? Because there's no way that the
- 18:52toads and the baboons are from the same planet.
- 18:54They're. Not the baboon on their team is
- 18:58a commando. He doesn't actually have to
- 19:00fight anybody. Like as soon as the frogs see
- 19:04them they go into fight or flight and spoiler alert it's
- 19:08always flight. They will throw themselves out
- 19:11an airlock to not have to fight the baboon.
- 19:15And those types of things make the show interesting.
- 19:19That's what I appreciate about this show is the weird stuff
- 19:22that I wouldn't have come up with on my own.
- 19:25Yeah, I do think it is a very odd show.
- 19:29I'm genuinely wondering, like, what does it mean to be
- 19:32brainwashed by the AI? Because the toads don't seem to
- 19:36be particularly. Driven.
- 19:38The villain is complex. It's an AI and in the comic book
- 19:43it lobotomizes all of the frogs so they become this mindless
- 19:49working army. Too scary for TV?
- 19:52But when they brought it over to the cartoon, they decided
- 19:56instead that the frogs are all stupid and lazy and he controls
- 20:02them through watching TV. Yeah, capitalism.
- 20:06Yeah. And.
- 20:06As much as that is less scary for TV, I guess it's also a much
- 20:13better prediction of humanity. Like I said, no.
- 20:18A deeply scary imprint on what our reality has become.
- 20:22Yeah, In the past couple years specifically.
- 20:24Especially considering the fact that they work for complex
- 20:28because they feel like they have to.
- 20:30Like that's all the conditioning has done to them.
- 20:33It's kind of interesting. There's two toad sidekicks
- 20:36called Fricks and Fracks. Every episode you get to watch
- 20:40them watch TV and it's some kind of toad propaganda in a
- 20:46commercial. It's kind of a fun addition.
- 20:49It's not TV. It's advertisements.
- 20:52All. Yeah, it's all advertising.
- 20:54Exactly. Yeah, it's kind of scary how
- 20:57much of our modern media consumption it is anyways.
- 21:02I need to talk about the elephant in the room.
- 21:05Do we get to guess what the elephant is?
- 21:07Oh, sure. There's one thing that growing
- 21:11up, it always stuck out to me. Go ahead, John.
- 21:14What's your? Guess Jenny the space witch cat
- 21:17has the hots for Willie the young boy.
- 21:19Yes, that is very uncomfortable. It's going to be something
- 21:23around the really smart kid and like the dynamics between him
- 21:28and the other people. My guess, I think it's going to
- 21:32be voice actor related. It is about Willie DeWitt.
- 21:36Willie DeWitt is such an uncommon name.
- 21:42I only know of one Willie DeWitt, and if you Google Willie
- 21:47DeWitt, there's only one that comes up.
- 21:50So either Larry Hama picked this name in a vacuum, or he is named
- 21:57after a famous athlete from Grand Prairie, Alberta.
- 22:01Oh, huh. Really.
- 22:03Yes. So for context, Willie De Witt
- 22:08was a boxer that came from Grand Prairie.
- 22:12He competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics.
- 22:16He got silver in the heavyweight class.
- 22:19Now he's a lawyer who lives in Calgary.
- 22:22There is a street named after him in Grand Prairie.
- 22:25It's where the old leisure center was.
- 22:28Yeah, over in the Avondale area. How?
- 22:30Did I think about it? The name is familiar.
- 22:32Willie De Witt Drive, I believe, is what it's called, Yeah.
- 22:35Huh. That has bugged me my whole
- 22:38life. Could he have made-up a name at
- 22:41random? I thought it was always a pun.
- 22:44I thought the idea was that he was Willie the wit, as in the
- 22:48smart guy. That's what I always thought he
- 22:50got. DeWitt.
- 22:52The idea he got DeWitt such a weird thing to.
- 22:57Really. I thought that's what it was.
- 22:59Did you find out if there was any connection?
- 23:01Did you ask our friendly AI complex?
- 23:04No, we are not inviting complex onto this podcast.
- 23:11Our next guest complex. It's going to brainwash that.
- 23:15Complex is the big bad boss. Who's the AI in this story?
- 23:20I'm sure someone's made an AI model called Complex.
- 23:23At this point I would switch to that AI if someone made it.
- 23:27Knowing full well that it's out to brainwash you.
- 23:30Yeah, they could program the AI to slightly try and make
- 23:34everything about toads, yeah. Well, they don't even need to
- 23:37try that for ChatGPT. What do you like of my new
- 23:41outfit? I totally love it.
- 23:45Not enough warts if you ask them.
- 23:48They need to throw a toad pad in every reply.
- 23:50Have you heard about Chachi BT's goblin issue?
- 23:54In Chachi BT's list of demands it says unless it is strictly
- 23:58related to the conversation, please do not bring up goblins,
- 24:01gremlins, trolls, ogres, or raccoons.
- 24:04Chachi BT will just constantly talk about goblins as much as
- 24:09possible because it's mentioned in the code by name, which is
- 24:14such a funny thing. Because it was told specifically
- 24:18not to mention that it's like one of those you're not allowed
- 24:22to open the cookie jar. It's like, well now I want.
- 24:25I don't think about pink elephants.
- 24:27Yeah, well. Now I got to talk about goblins.
- 24:30Don't think about pink elephants.
- 24:32Well now I got to talk about goblins.
- 24:36Felt cute. Might get brainwashed later.
- 24:39According to the Open AI website, it's because their
- 24:42nerdy personality for the AI was like doing a feedback loop where
- 24:46it was rewarding itself for bringing up weird and niche
- 24:50topics, and those weird and niche topics always lended
- 24:54towards being goblins. Yeah, it's very weird.
- 24:58Goblin feedback loop is so funny to me.
- 25:02Chance you brought up voice actors?
- 25:04Well, this has a fairly large cast of recognizables.
- 25:10There's one voice that sticks out to me more than the rest,
- 25:14and that's Dead Eyed Duck because that's played by Scott
- 25:18McNeil and his voice is very similar in most things that he
- 25:25does. You could imagine Dead Eyed Duck
- 25:28and hear Piccolo from Dragon Ball Z talking and you'd be like
- 25:34oh that's the same guy. Or we watched Beast Wars for
- 25:40this show. That's clearly rat trap and
- 25:43Dinobot. Exactly.
- 25:44So he has a very iconic voice. So the way that really got into
- 25:51the anniverse is because he made a particle accelerator in his
- 25:56bedroom. Drive or something like that.
- 25:59But sound like. He also wrote a goodbye to his
- 26:02parents like. He knew he was going to die.
- 26:07So I might. Make a black hole in my bedroom
- 26:10tonight if you never see me again, that's why.
- 26:15Well, it sounds like his parents are pretty proud of him.
- 26:17Even the bullies are proud of him.
- 26:20I didn't really get the sense that Willie was well thought
- 26:24out. He is, like someone mentioned
- 26:27earlier, the smartest human being ever.
- 26:29He can fix any problem that's scientific based or
- 26:32technological, and he gets taken into this universe of animals
- 26:38and is not shocked at all. He's like, Oh my.
- 26:42He's like, Oh yeah, like just another average day.
- 26:44Sometimes he's like, well, that's cool, but like, that's as
- 26:47far as it gets. He's like, I can hear you
- 26:50through this rock. Isn't that crazy?
- 26:52OK Anyways. Does anybody else know you can
- 26:55speak through people? Through rocks?
- 26:56No. OK.
- 26:59Yeah, so he doesn't really make a lot of sense.
- 27:01And then as a kid, you're supposed to relate to Willie
- 27:04because he'll be going through some kind of experience at
- 27:07school, like a girl's flirting with them so she can cheat from
- 27:10his homework or. And the.
- 27:12Answer is to be the smartest person in the.
- 27:14Room reality's reality. Reality is reality.
- 27:19Oh my. God.
- 27:20OK, so for context, this girl is asking him out and doing it
- 27:25because she wants his test answers according to the other
- 27:28people in the room in the show. And she's like, if you give me
- 27:32those test answers, I'll go on a date with you.
- 27:35And he's like, I'm not interested.
- 27:37Reality is reality. No, he doesn't even say I'm not
- 27:40interested. He opens with reality, is
- 27:43reality, and then that's it. I think it's important to give a
- 27:46bit of context. This is an episode where we see
- 27:50early on that he's being taken advantage of this girl in our
- 27:53world, but then he goes to the Anniverse where he learns that
- 27:57the toads are wearing these goggles that prevent them from
- 28:00being scared of the baboons. And so to win the fight, they
- 28:03have to get the goggles off the toads.
- 28:05They beat the toads by making them face rally.
- 28:08That is the loose thread by which Willie then goes back to
- 28:12the whole world and decides that now he's taking the goggles off
- 28:17metaphorically, and he can see what's happening for what it
- 28:21really is. It was a really poorly done
- 28:24moral message. I think you mean an amazingly.
- 28:28Done. This is like if he came back and
- 28:31he was like, I'm sorry, I'm taking the red pill.
- 28:35I know what's real. I'm taking the goggles off.
- 28:42Taking. The goggles off.
- 28:45Reality is Reality is like my favorite quote from the show,
- 28:49but I just don't know how a person could put it into any
- 28:53sentence I've heard. Well, it can be a callback.
- 28:56For what episode? For future episodes, you can say
- 29:01it at the end. That's true.
- 29:03He has a point. Just.
- 29:04For us, yeah, but you can see how it's hard to relate to this
- 29:10kid because. All the girls want him.
- 29:15That's also true. You've got a space witch cat who
- 29:18likes him. You've got the girl who's
- 29:21cheating off his test. And every female character we
- 29:25meet except for the fox. We don't know if Bruiser Baboons
- 29:28mom is. So there is this fun episode,
- 29:34the one with the goggles, where we get to go to the baboon
- 29:37homeworld Beetlejuicia. And it's funny because you get
- 29:41the impression that the voice actor who voices our main baboon
- 29:46character has now been given the task to voice.
- 29:49Everybody. Mom baboon, the random baboon.
- 29:52The farmer baboon. So and Willie sometimes, yes,
- 29:55that's what I was going to say. Farmer baboon there's. 1.
- 29:59Scene The guys say that they're war crap.
- 30:01Yeah, your cry is. And then he's like, I'm pretty
- 30:07sure Willie could do this. Isn't that right?
- 30:09Really. Really.
- 30:10He's like, oh Gee, sure, I can try.
- 30:16Same audio clip, there's no difference.
- 30:18It's so funny. So when choosing episodes for
- 30:21this I chose the first arc of the show, 4 episodes, and Chance
- 30:25said the episode that he had the most memory of was this baboon
- 30:30episode so I threw that in too. Honestly, it was a pretty great
- 30:34addition Chance. Yeah, it might have been the
- 30:36best episode. Thank you, thank you.
- 30:38I don't want the audience to know this is my memory of Bucky.
- 30:41O'Hare was the Iyuga berserker Babu.
- 30:45The reality is reality, episode reality is reality.
- 30:50What was it like going back to that chance?
- 30:53I think. I had a similar experience to
- 30:56what I did with. Silverhawks where I think the.
- 30:59Theme song for this show kills. It's so fun.
- 31:01But then watching that episode like a show is so bad.
- 31:05You guys, it's terrible. There are very few redeeming
- 31:08qualities. What are you talking about the
- 31:11episode with Mimi where they're building parts for the Super and
- 31:16or RIP that off like 20 years later?
- 31:21And sometimes the lesson is that racism is good, I don't think.
- 31:24Sonic the Hedgehog would teach you that.
- 31:28Suck it, Sonic. So like, we teach the real
- 31:31lesson. People haven't watched Bucky
- 31:33O'Hare and they're gonna go and watch it after listening to
- 31:37this. The episodes that we
- 31:38specifically watched were episode 1, episode 2, episode 3,
- 31:44episode 4, and episode 12. So we watched 5 episodes.
- 31:49I want to talk a little bit about the toys because it's
- 31:54actually wild how many of the toys we owned growing up.
- 31:59We pretty much had them all. So I've got a little something
- 32:04for everyone in the Discord chat.
- 32:09Listeners, sorry you don't get to see any of this so.
- 32:16How many Bucky O'Hare toys you can spot?
- 32:18OK, that's deadeye, duck and Bucky.
- 32:21OK. There's one more.
- 32:23Oh yeah, yeah, that's Willy there in the bottom center.
- 32:25Yeah, Oh, it is Willy. We had Toad, Borg, we had
- 32:30Blinky, we had the frog ships, and it had an ability that it
- 32:37croaked whenever you moved the ship.
- 32:40It's kind of like those little toys where it's like when you
- 32:44whip it around. Instead of it.
- 32:47Weird sticks get. Croaked.
- 32:49Yeah, super cool toys. We didn't have the good guy ship
- 32:54though. Whatever was called the the Toad
- 32:56Stomper or the Toads. I think it's the toad croaker.
- 33:00Toad Croaker. That's right.
- 33:01Yeah. We didn't have that, though.
- 33:02They never made a righteous indignation.
- 33:05There are toy designs out in the wild.
- 33:09They made a different ship first.
- 33:11The little ship that comes out. OK.
- 33:14Chance and Kyle, and I'm gonna need you to describe what shows
- 33:18up on Discord next. OK.
- 33:20Oh. Boy, oh, I can't describe this.
- 33:26I did not remember that, John. It's so garbage.
- 33:34No, no, no, I just mean like it is junkyard, like the ski
- 33:38goggles. So what John just added to the
- 33:44chat is me in a Bucky O'Hare Halloween costume, and it caught
- 33:50me off guard there. For me, I've got those like
- 33:54dishwashing gloves off. There's like a yellow ribbon
- 33:59around your neck. Are those two pieces of
- 34:02cardboard? He's not teeth.
- 34:05Wow, what are the what? A great image.
- 34:08So if we're wondering if the costume was complete.
- 34:15You guys are just jealous. Of what?
- 34:19So he's got a little Bunny tail on the back.
- 34:22This. Has to be on the cover of his
- 34:25episode, yeah. Just look at the cover if you're
- 34:29curious, it's somewhere on here. It's incredible.
- 34:33Why thank? You.
- 34:34I guess Tim, this brings us back to your childhood.
- 34:38Help us understand what Bucky O'hair meant to you as a kid and
- 34:42also what it was like re watching.
- 34:44What he looked like in your mind.
- 34:46To make. You make those costumes.
- 34:48I got to remind everyone the threshold for good Halloween
- 34:52costumes when I was younger was much lower.
- 34:57If you could scrap together some cardboard, that was a prime
- 35:00costume. But you have hit on something,
- 35:03John. I've thought a lot about Bucky
- 35:06O'Hare. I have talked about it on the
- 35:08podcast. I'm not a toy collector, but I
- 35:11do own some toys as an adult. They are strictly contained to
- 35:17the Silver Hawks cartoon that I watched in my formative years.
- 35:22Those are the only toys I have because I have that weird tie to
- 35:26something that brainwashed me when I was like 3 or 4 years
- 35:29old. That said, I did fall down a
- 35:32rabbit hole half a year ago or so and I almost bought some
- 35:38Bucky O'Hare toys. I don't know if it's because
- 35:41it's more niche than Ninja Turtles.
- 35:44You know, Transformers, GI Joe, He Man, Ninja Turtles.
- 35:47These things impacted everyone and if I had to name 1 property
- 35:53that affected my childhood the most, it's probably Ninja
- 35:56Turtles. But that's kind of true for
- 35:58everyone, so that might be why I gravitate more towards these
- 36:03things that are less popular. I honestly don't know.
- 36:06These things that suck. In other words, hipster.
- 36:11Yes, I'm a green hipster Bunny. That explains it.
- 36:16I love comparing it to the clown outfit too, because it's so much
- 36:20higher quality. Why?
- 36:22Thank you. Yeah.
- 36:23OK, that's what I meant. Sure.
- 36:26For our listeners, John is currently dressed as a clown in
- 36:28this picture. Currently.
- 36:31You can imagine. Whatever clown you like, it's
- 36:32worse. Yes, so as a reminder, John is 6
- 36:36foot two and a half, 197 lbs, has a beard.
- 36:41Wearing a clown. Outfit.
- 36:43How many pounds A. 197 OK, lost that weight during this call.
- 36:48Yeah. And I'm proud of you for it,
- 36:50John. Tim, what was it like re
- 36:54watching a show? Was it as you remembered it?
- 36:57Like I said, chance is right. Most of the heroic characters
- 37:01are not very likable in this show.
- 37:03So when I was watching it, I was watching it more from this
- 37:08adults perspective, trying to solve these puzzles that had
- 37:12bothered me for the last 40 years.
- 37:14Like who is Willie DeWitt? Is he named after a person from
- 37:18our hometown? What are the chances of that?
- 37:22It's not possible, right? But I still don't have answers.
- 37:25So until the day where I meet Larry Hama, I don't know if I
- 37:30ever will. Maybe that's a new life goal.
- 37:33Maybe I need to meet Larry Hama to ask him.
- 37:36I just feel like that's probably easy, like with the Internet you
- 37:39could probably just tweet or X him or whatever.
- 37:41Oh well, the guy who showed up without any AI plans.
- 37:46It's telling me how easy it is to get a hold of.
- 37:49He was too busy looking at pictures from 1991.
- 37:54It was a magical year for Halloween costume.
- 37:57All right. Should we kick it over to
- 37:58closing? Yeah, I mean, first, before we
- 38:01do, I have one more quote from the movie.
- 38:03The toads are changing the weather on these planets to make
- 38:06them more toad habitable, and there's this line that they've
- 38:09turned Warren into a sticky, icky grangy mangy swamp.
- 38:15I think that speaks a rinse off. Can we talk about how unkind
- 38:18they are in their words towards toads?
- 38:21They'll call them things like tadpoles or fly sucking, slimy
- 38:26croaking piece of toad. Wow, that last one is bad.
- 38:30Hurtful. Even.
- 38:31Yeah. I mean, I think it's a little
- 38:34bit justified when they're trying to take over the entire
- 38:37universe. No one's ever called you a
- 38:39chicken eating pasty piece of human.
- 38:44Wow. Wow, I feel like chicken is kind
- 38:48of an insult actually. Vega Chicken Eater.
- 38:52Yeah. Chicken nugget.
- 38:54All right? I mean, chances talk pretty
- 38:57openly that he loves this show. It's true.
- 39:00I do. Talk about that in closing, or
- 39:03tell us what your rating would be.
- 39:06This is probably going to be a two.
- 39:09There are worse things you could spend your time watching.
- 39:12Aren't that many worst things, you know?
- 39:15It's pretty egregious. That being said, there are parts
- 39:18that I had fun with and that's good enough for A2I.
- 39:21Promised that this was the most approachable episode for
- 39:24newcomers. So chance of scale is a scale of
- 39:29-5 to +5, and low numbers like 1 or -1 are actually the worst
- 39:38scores you can get a 0. Is closer to middle the worse it
- 39:42is. Yeah, A -, 5 is terrible movie,
- 39:46but in the best ways. A + 5 is just an amazing movie.
- 39:50So if you were to watch a -5 movie, it would be bad, but you
- 39:56would have a great time. So a 2 is a passable experience.
- 40:02It's not a good experience, but. It could be worse.
- 40:05Yeah, it could be worse. Anything else you want to say
- 40:08there chance? If there is anyone thing like
- 40:11this, seems like fun, maybe I should watch this show.
- 40:13I would invite you to watch the theme song and nothing else.
- 40:16You will leave happy. Wow, trying to keep people away
- 40:20from my father's nostalgia. That's right, I'm hoarding it.
- 40:25If everyone gets into Bucky O'Hare, then Tim isn't
- 40:27interesting. That's right.
- 40:29Oh, what? A2 TV show?
- 40:32All right, John, what do you want to say about this show?
- 40:35Yeah, it's interesting that you make the comparison to
- 40:38Silverhawks. Both shows for me, because they
- 40:41were so important to you. I was just kind of born into
- 40:46really being into them. We didn't have channels on our
- 40:49TV that let us watch these kind of things, so we relied on
- 40:53owning one VHS. You'd rent the other VHS's
- 40:57because each VHS has like 2 episodes on it or whatever, so
- 41:00you'd eventually get to watch all the episodes and just
- 41:03because we had all the toys. It was a big part of my
- 41:06childhood so I am completely blind with nostalgia.
- 41:10Oh wow. Yeah, I'd be OK to watch the
- 41:13rest of the episodes. I'm sure that if I watch a show
- 41:18from the early 90s that was this quality, but not Bucky O'Hare,
- 41:22and I hadn't seen it before, I probably wouldn't want to watch
- 41:25more than an episode. But because it's Bucky O'Hare,
- 41:28I'm like, give it to me. Well, I think.
- 41:30That it's got some interesting adult undertones as well, like
- 41:35racism. Like Racism Center.
- 41:40Yeah, no, I. Was over tone.
- 41:42Like there's bureaucracy too. Bucky O'Hare wants to fight back
- 41:47against the toads, but all of the leadership of the Free
- 41:52Peoples are like that. Money needs to go to other
- 41:56things. We can't afford to build
- 41:59warships. Prove to us that the toads are a
- 42:01threat. So it's Bucky O'Hare.
- 42:03Versus the forces of low income military, we're not willing to
- 42:08build more of what you need. I just find it interesting.
- 42:12I don't think I know of any other kids cartoon that tried to
- 42:16rile us up against politicians. Like give Bucky more weapons,
- 42:21Captain. Planet.
- 42:23No, the opposite Captain Planet. They don't like war.
- 42:26Bucky's like, I want to go to war and as kids were like.
- 42:29Yeah, you need to draft the people of Warren.
- 42:36All right, Jon, did you want to add anything other than Blinded
- 42:39by Nostalgia? I do think that for a concept
- 42:43that was made in the 70s, it is pretty impressive.
- 42:48Regardless of however the show executed it, the concept of the
- 42:51characters, how they look, and the world that was created is a
- 42:55really cool one. I'm a huge fan and Toad Borg is
- 42:58just the flippin coolest bad guy ever.
- 43:01Like when he shows up and just beats them all up I'm like yes
- 43:04because I feel like in 90s shows the villains are never really
- 43:08that strong. Yeah, we love a good bad guy
- 43:10win. Yeah, And so when you actually
- 43:13fear the bad guy and you're like, how on earth could the
- 43:16good guys ever beat him? That was a cool memory I had of
- 43:19Toad Borg as a kid. That's why we had to break our
- 43:22toad Borg's thumb off. Yeah, so that they'd.
- 43:25Have too powerful. My turn.
- 43:26Sure, go for it. When we were first watching this
- 43:29show, I thought that the version that we were watching had some
- 43:32like really weird commercial breaks.
- 43:35But the longer I watched the show, the more I realized the
- 43:38pacing is real bad. They go from one thing to
- 43:42another in no time at all. I have a scene here that I wrote
- 43:45down because of how bad it felt. They land down on Warren and
- 43:49it's a swamp now and they're like, it's almost like they've
- 43:52used some kind of climate changing technology.
- 43:55Hey look, it's an audio. Recording.
- 43:57We just set up the climate changing technology and we are
- 44:00leaving now. OK, why was that something that
- 44:04needed to be? There.
- 44:05Yes, this movie moves at a breakneck pace.
- 44:09All in all, not great. I would fix the pacing and fix
- 44:14the characters. Just make them interesting.
- 44:17I think that those two are mandatory.
- 44:18It's a new season, would you like to go back?
- 44:22Up with a new. Go back to cook.
- 44:25So my cookie is cookie trap. Wallpaper return of the cookie.
- 44:29My cookie is cookie trap wallpaper, just so you know.
- 44:32I don't know what that means. I had thought this up before you
- 44:36asked me by oh, there is an advertisement where they are
- 44:40selling flytrap wallpaper so that the flies get stuck to your
- 44:44wall and you can snack on them. So when the cookie monster, when
- 44:48the cookies are flying around your house, they'll get stuck on
- 44:51the walls and then you can eat the cookies off the walls.
- 44:54Oh, you're chopping the cookies on the wall?
- 44:56Yeah. I thought you were baiting
- 44:58people with the cookies. OK.
- 45:02I've not understood a single thing with three set.
- 45:05Well, I love that we brought cookies back.
- 45:07I'm here. For it.
- 45:08You're welcome. This is the most approachable
- 45:10episode and nobody knows what I just said.
- 45:14Including, can you explain the metaphor of the cookies sticking
- 45:18to the? Fact that when I said it was a
- 45:20DVD, it's not edible, therefore it's a DVD.
- 45:23Yeah. So it's a trap.
- 45:27The show is a trap. It pulls you in like an angler
- 45:30fish and then it eats you. So in the same way that a cookie
- 45:33gets stuck to the wall and then it gets eaten, we are the cookie
- 45:37in this case. For me I agree with what John
- 45:40said, this whole concept was really far ahead of its time and
- 45:46the show gets weird. They team up with an octopus spy
- 45:51you guys didn't see but dog stars Gunner like Deadeye is a
- 45:55bumblebee that has a gun for a Stinger.
- 45:58And it was. Really impractical.
- 46:01How would you use that? You can't face the people that
- 46:04you're shooting. And I just think like, what's
- 46:07the rules for animal this world? I What's the?
- 46:10Deal. Man, it's all super weird you.
- 46:14Born with a gun in your. Finger but like I said, I'm here
- 46:18for the I got it medically removed.
- 46:20Why I think that those are the things that interest me most
- 46:25about cartoons as an adult, people who took weird chances.
- 46:29I thank you, Larry Hama, if you ever listen to this podcast.
- 46:33Which we know that you. Are.
- 46:35Yeah, yeah. What if our regular listeners
- 46:38Larry Hama. We know he's tuned into Grand
- 46:40Prairie in the surrounding area, so.
- 46:42That's right. That's what I was gonna say is
- 46:44when you get a chance, please e-mail us at bullypod@gmail.com
- 46:48and let us know how big of a fan you are of the Grand Prairie
- 46:52boxer Willie DeWitt. This show does tackle weird
- 46:57politics. I cannot honestly recommend it
- 47:01to anyone, but I still can you. Recommend it to your future
- 47:05self. Future self would watch this
- 47:08over another lamb before time, any day of the week.
- 47:13Well, that wasn't part of the question.
- 47:14Well, that's who John is. Gaslit future self into watching
- 47:19SO. You're both to the same day.
- 47:23Watch Lamb before time. No, no, no, please watch Bucky
- 47:26O'Hare. Speaking of future episodes, our
- 47:30next episode that we're coming back with for people who want to
- 47:34watch and TuneIn alongside us is D2, The Mighty Ducks sequel.
- 47:42Yep. Does anybody have any spoilers
- 47:45that they want to talk about before we rewatch that movie?
- 47:49Spoiler I'm not excited. Have you ever watched?
- 47:52You have forced me to watch something Mighty Ducks related.
- 47:55OK, I remember one day I made Chance watch the Mighty Ducks
- 48:00movies and he actually really enjoyed them and so we ended up
- 48:05watching all of them. What do you remember Chance?
- 48:08Almost. Nothing, if I'm being honest.
- 48:10If I remember correctly, it's like, oh, it's a sports team,
- 48:13but these are like the worst sports team people.
- 48:16It's an underdog, an underdog. That's like the thing that you
- 48:23do on a Swing set when you run underneath.
- 48:26It that is what that is called. That is actually what that is
- 48:28called. Wow.
- 48:29Yes, and if everyone noticed, it is another sequel movie.
- 48:33We grew up with Mighty Ducks 2, not Mighty Ducks one.
- 48:37Yes, and we'll get more into it on our next episode.
- 48:41I watched all of those movies many times, but as John
- 48:45mentioned, our parents only ever bought the second movie which.
- 48:50If her number is better, obviously, why would you buy the
- 48:54movie? With all movies only go up in
- 48:55quality. Yeah, I'll tell you, buy.
- 48:57The movie without a #1 when you could buy one with the number on
- 49:00it, it's just a bonus. You can find it on Disney Plus.
- 49:03Oh yes, they tried to do a TV show on Disney Plus.
- 49:07As a reminder to everyone before we close as well, please look
- 49:11for the poll either in the description in the comments or
- 49:16attached to this episode wherever you tune in.
- 49:19And I have a dark confession to make everyone I've been.
- 49:26Did we get to guess what it is? OK, fine.
- 49:30Guess what it is. There's zero percent chance you
- 49:33guess what it is. It has something to do with one
- 49:36of our callbacks. Is it a reveal that you lied
- 49:39about a callback being in a movie?
- 49:41So after all this time I was looking through some old footage
- 49:47to put in a TikTok and I was watching the first episode of
- 49:52the Odyssey. Oh no, it's not even lookout for
- 49:56weirdos, is it? It's not.
- 49:58What is it? It's a watch, weirdos.
- 50:02It's. What?
- 50:03Watch out for weirdos. So that's so funny, honestly.
- 50:08Our callback that started it all.
- 50:11All of our callbacks are built on the lookout for weirdos.
- 50:15And this is how we end every episode of the show.
- 50:18And it's incorrect. That's so funny, the.
- 50:21Fact we have ever said is wrong. So I think we just lean into it
- 50:27and we keep saying lookout for Weirdos.
- 50:29It rolls out a lot. Yes, you have been living a lot,
- 50:34so sorry to burst people's bubbles.
- 50:37But, you know, if it makes it any better, we made-up lookout
- 50:40for Weirdos we just didn't realize at the time.
- 50:44Tim, sometimes you just have to accept that reality is reality.
- 50:48Reality is reality. You're taking those nicotine
- 50:50colored goggles off. All right, Anything anybody
- 50:54wants to say in closing, don't. Forget to breathe.
- 50:58Braised Beethoven out. Grandma.
- 51:01Something something the sun is shining, but the ice is
- 51:05slippery. Hey, you got it.
- 51:09I think that might be the first time I've ever said that fully.
- 51:12We're going to make reality is reality.
- 51:14A reoccurring thing I. Don't think we plan it.
- 51:16I think it's organic. Yeah, I think reality is reality
- 51:19is going to come back guaranteed, but we don't know if
- 51:23it's going to be a call back. This doesn't sound like podcast
- 51:26talk anymore. This sounds like shock talk.
- 51:28This sounds like, you know, it does sound like podcast talk,
- 51:31Logan. All right, Are we ending this
- 51:38thing? This is the most approachable.
- 51:40This is psychotic. I just want to point out the
- 51:42fact that we have every episode ends with about two minutes of
- 51:46just referencing previous episodes.
- 51:48Is so approachable. Yeah, the fact that we devolve
- 51:52as. Soon, as we say.
- 51:53Before this is gonna end. And we all love referential
- 51:59humor, as we all know. We all know we love that stuff.
- 52:04Yeah, so it makes sense. Oh, you want to vote for us to
- 52:08watch Spy Hard again? Too bad I'm already re watching
- 52:12it every night before bed. Joke's on you.
- 52:18All right. I guess that's it.
- 52:20Thanks for listening. Thanks for listening.
