- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happen to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken poop.
- 0:31Every morning when I come out here, it's always the same
- 0:35process. I have to most of the time I
- 0:38work to beat the girls to the gate, but they actually beat me
- 0:42to the gate some days. And I don't want to say it's
- 0:45often, but they do beat me to the gate.
- 0:47And that just means that their little door opened up and they
- 0:50get to come out of there, their coop.
- 0:54And then they are waiting at the main gate from the run so they
- 0:57can get out and go do their chicken things in the morning.
- 1:00Which is lovely for them because morning is like the time that
- 1:03they just enjoy being out. It's quiet, it's peaceful.
- 1:06And they tend to go out and, you know, dig all day long and then
- 1:10come back. They've got food here all day
- 1:11and whatnot. But neither here nor there.
- 1:15One of the things when they leave the coop that I do is
- 1:17reorganize the coop, put out fresh food, dry food.
- 1:22They have crumbles, they have other things, they have water,
- 1:25they have calcium, they have all different types of rocks that
- 1:29they can because they have to ingest rocks in order to digest
- 1:31their food. And so I, I put that fresh out
- 1:34every morning. But a big task that I do every
- 1:37morning is deal with chicken poop.
- 1:40So this this becomes such a metaphor for me in my head that
- 1:46I wanted to share this because I love my chickens now.
- 1:50They are some of them are the kind of chickens you can pick up
- 1:53and hug and they let you. Some of them are not.
- 1:56Some of them have. I like Hootie, who has been with
- 1:59me since day one. First batch of chickens.
- 2:04She looks like a little owl. I don't think she's ever laid an
- 2:07egg. I've never seen her lay an egg
- 2:09ever. And she's got her.
- 2:11She's definitely a loner. She does not want to be with the
- 2:14other chickens. She does not want to be.
- 2:17She's here with them now while they're eating breakfast, but
- 2:19most of the day she's off on her own, doing her own thing,
- 2:23fiercely independent. And you know, I don't think
- 2:26she's ever laid an egg. But in in any event, that's not
- 2:28what this is about. It's the chicken poop.
- 2:31So I come in and I have to deal with it because if you don't
- 2:33deal with the chicken poop, it deals with you, you end up with
- 2:38flies, you end up with stench, you end up with sick chickens.
- 2:42You get, they get, they can get fly strike, which is a terrible
- 2:45thing to have happen. And chickens already have enough
- 2:49ways to kill themselves. Believe me.
- 2:50They seek them out and find them.
- 2:52And it always makes me laugh because I'm just like, well, if
- 2:54there's a way to get into trouble, a chicken will find it.
- 2:57And it's very similar to humans. Sometimes we just seem to, you
- 3:01know, find ways to get ourselves in trouble even though we know
- 3:04we shouldn't. But the chicken poop is real.
- 3:06And it's something that every day when I go in, I flip the hay
- 3:10over, I sprinkle some of the first lime on it to make sure.
- 3:15And again, this is not an endorsement for first lime.
- 3:17It's just what I use on it. And I scrape their ladders going
- 3:21up so there's no piles of poop sitting there.
- 3:23And I get it out now, some people who have chickens and
- 3:27listening to this are going to say that's excessive.
- 3:29Why do you do that? You don't have to do it.
- 3:31No, I don't have to. But I choose to because what's
- 3:34important to me is a clean environment and that I see
- 3:38things while they are small so I can deal with it.
- 3:41And it is a massive reminder that I, I have to accept the
- 3:48fact that there's poop in the coop every single day.
- 3:53Like I go out there and I'm and I know if I haven't chicken, I
- 3:56have poop. It's just like if you have a
- 3:58dog, you have poop. Well, it's kind of like in life,
- 4:04you have this issue with your own world, right?
- 4:06Like you have to accept that if you're alive, things are going
- 4:09to happen. Things are definitely going to
- 4:11happen and you're definitely going to have to clean them up.
- 4:14And by just saying, OK, I accept the responsibility of the poop
- 4:19of the chickens, I'm going to clean it up.
- 4:21I'm going to make sure that this is part of my, my daily, you
- 4:27know, chores. So I accept it.
- 4:30I don't expect to be overrun. I don't expect it to be more
- 4:34than normal. I just OK.
- 4:36Yeah. I don't catastrophize poop.
- 4:38I don't sit there and in my head go over and over and over about
- 4:41how much chicken poop there is and why I'm using this as an
- 4:44example. So you remember it because we do
- 4:46that in life. We accept that things go wrong
- 4:49in our lives. Like that's just part of being
- 4:51human. I've got, you know, all this
- 4:54beautiful garden as I overlook it from the chicken coop and my
- 4:58zucchinis are a disaster. They started off so amazing.
- 5:02I got maybe 10 zucchinis out of it.
- 5:04And then of course, the little bores got in and I'm like going
- 5:10to start all over again. I just accept the fact I didn't
- 5:13expect it to happen. I didn't catastrophize it, but I
- 5:17accepted it. Just like with the tomatoes, I
- 5:19accepted that they can get something, but I'm not expecting
- 5:23it. But I'm prepared.
- 5:25I like know it's possible so I can deal with it and I can make
- 5:30sure that I'm going to end up with what I wanted.
- 5:32So handling the the vision in your head up front helps a lot
- 5:38and just making it part of your knowledge, like, hey, listen,
- 5:41we're going to have things that show up.
- 5:43There is no question about it. Just like chicken poop, it just
- 5:46shows up. So use the metaphor, recognize
- 5:50it and don't catastrophize it. Just accept it and clean it up.
- 5:54Because then you have, you know, a beautiful day ahead of you.
- 5:58All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I'll
- 6:00see you tomorrow. Bye.
