- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast.
- 0:17It's also an online course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:27Our current series is Meaningful Work, Calling, Formation,
- 0:31Service, and Love.
- 0:33About a year ago, a little bit over
- 0:36a year ago, I was at a New
- 0:37Year's Eve party with some old college friends,
- 0:40and I bumped into an old college classmate,
- 0:42Justin, there, who I hadn't seen in a
- 0:44while.
- 0:44And we got to talking, and I mentioned
- 0:46that I was interested in learning strength training.
- 0:48And Justin said, oh, what gym do you
- 0:49go to?
- 0:50Turns out we had a membership at the
- 0:51same gym.
- 0:52For the next six months or so, Justin
- 0:54trained me in strength training.
- 0:55It was like having a free personal trainer.
- 0:57It was great.
- 0:57It was phenomenal.
- 0:59But because I was inexperienced, Justin had to
- 1:02kind of gauge how much weight he was
- 1:04going to put on the bar for any
- 1:05given, you know, if we were doing squats
- 1:07or if we were doing the bench press,
- 1:08like how many weights would he put on?
- 1:10And he and science, we would have another
- 1:11buddy there.
- 1:12He and the other guy would put on
- 1:14a lot of weights, you know, these circular
- 1:15weights you put on either side of the
- 1:16bar and do like 10 reps.
- 1:18And then it would be my turn, and
- 1:19they'd be like, let's take some of those
- 1:20weights off.
- 1:21You know, Chris, you're not ready for this
- 1:22yet.
- 1:22And it was humbling.
- 1:24But I was also really, really grateful for
- 1:26it because I couldn't have lifted that bigger
- 1:29set that they were capable of.
- 1:31And as time went on, Justin would put
- 1:33more weights on like like it would be
- 1:34my turn and he'd be like, oh, let's
- 1:35let's have another weight, Chris.
- 1:36And inside, I would always be like, no,
- 1:38it's going to be harder.
- 1:39But like, I knew that Justin was giving
- 1:41me what I was ready for.
- 1:42So I was really grateful for the training.
- 1:43And Justin was a great kind of coach
- 1:45trainer, willing to pace the weight like I
- 1:48needed it.
- 1:49Well, as we think about our workplace, we
- 1:51think about formation within our workplace.
- 1:54I think it's healthy to think about our
- 1:55workplace as a spiritual training ground.
- 1:58Jesus is there with us at work.
- 2:00And he's not just there with us to
- 2:02get the work done.
- 2:03Although that matters, too.
- 2:04We spent a lot of time in this
- 2:05podcast talking about how our everyday work matters
- 2:07to the Lord.
- 2:08But he's also there to work on us.
- 2:11He's there doing his spiritual work in us
- 2:14to shape our character.
- 2:15And sometimes it's even the difficult things in
- 2:18our workplaces that give us the opportunities for
- 2:22God to work on our character.
- 2:23On our last episode, we talked about how
- 2:25God can use that spiritual sandpaper to sand
- 2:27down the rough edges of our character through
- 2:29those abrasive experiences we may have at work.
- 2:33So in this episode, I want to think
- 2:34about how might Jesus be using your work
- 2:37as a training ground to develop your character?
- 2:39What kind of weight might he be adding
- 2:41to the bar, so to speak, that you're
- 2:43ready to lift, even if it requires that
- 2:46effort and that strain?
- 2:47And that's like, oh, why do you put
- 2:48that weight on?
- 2:49Could it be that Jesus is giving you
- 2:51an opportunity here?
- 2:52Now, I want to be careful in the
- 2:53way that I speak because God is not
- 2:55the author of evil.
- 2:56God does not cause evil in our lives.
- 2:59And yet in the middle of sin and
- 3:02brokenness and evil, God is always working for
- 3:04good.
- 3:05So God can take something that's evil or
- 3:07wrong or not the way it should be.
- 3:09That's unjust.
- 3:10And he can make it a spiritual opportunity
- 3:12for growth for us.
- 3:14I think that's the way that he can
- 3:15use different forms of suffering that we face
- 3:17to bring about his purposes in our life,
- 3:20his growth of Christlike character in us.
- 3:23So in this episode, I want to focus
- 3:25on the idea of growing into the Christlike
- 3:28character of forgiveness.
- 3:30How do we forgive other people?
- 3:34Well, again, I think this idea of weight
- 3:36can be helpful.
- 3:37If somebody does something that's just like moderately
- 3:39annoying and your response is to stew over
- 3:43it, to just perseverate on how annoying it
- 3:46is and how frustrated you are with that
- 3:48person.
- 3:48Like maybe it's a co-worker who is
- 3:52always one minute late to team meetings, right?
- 3:55And maybe you're not his manager and it's
- 3:57not your place to confront him about it,
- 3:59but he's just always like scooting in the
- 4:01door one minute late and you're like, dang
- 4:02it, he's wasting our time.
- 4:03And you just stew on that and you
- 4:05feel bitter about it.
- 4:07You wish your teammate was more responsible.
- 4:09He's wasting your time.
- 4:09Okay, if you have that response to this
- 4:12mild annoyance of someone running one minute late
- 4:14to team meetings, what if something more serious
- 4:17happens in your life?
- 4:18What if somebody actually hurts you in some
- 4:21way?
- 4:22Will you have the character to be able
- 4:24to forgive that person of a serious wrong,
- 4:27to be gracious toward them?
- 4:29What if this mild annoyance is like that
- 4:31little weight on the bar, you know, maybe
- 4:34it's just a warm-up weight where it's
- 4:35like, hey, can you practice being gracious with
- 4:37this kind of offense?
- 4:40Practice lifting the bar with this much weight
- 4:42on it.
- 4:42Maybe Jesus is inviting you into that.
- 4:44Okay, practice lifting the bar with this much
- 4:47weight on it.
- 4:47Can you be gracious toward that person?
- 4:50Because we see in scripture this call to
- 4:53be gracious toward even much, much worse offenses.
- 4:56Jesus calls us to love our enemies.
- 4:58We think of Jesus himself on the cross
- 5:00saying, forgive them for they know not what
- 5:02they do.
- 5:02This kind of heroic forgiveness, even of people
- 5:05who hate us and wrong us, but we're
- 5:07never going to get there.
- 5:08We're never going to get to that kind
- 5:10of interior freedom and capacity to show grace
- 5:12if we can't do it with the little
- 5:14everyday cuts and bruises of just getting along
- 5:16with other sinful human beings in the workplace
- 5:18environment.
- 5:20So again, see it as an opportunity, the
- 5:24difficulty, the annoyance.
- 5:25It's not just something to white knuckle and
- 5:27get through and then just sort of stoically
- 5:29move on to the next task.
- 5:30It's an opportunity for you to do a
- 5:34few reps, do a few reps of low
- 5:35weight, building grace, building strength as God gives
- 5:39you energy.
- 5:40And this idea of kind of like the
- 5:42relative weight of different kinds of forgiveness actually
- 5:45comes into the teaching of Jesus.
- 5:47So I want to go to one of
- 5:48Jesus's parables about this to kind of help
- 5:51us out.
- 5:51But as we go along the way, I
- 5:53also want to talk about how do we
- 5:55practically respond to the kind of cuts and
- 5:59bruises that we may face in our workplace
- 6:01relationships.
- 6:02So we're going to be drawing from a
- 6:03parable that Jesus shares in Matthew 18.
- 6:06But a little bit before the parable, he
- 6:08also shares about how to deal with somebody,
- 6:11especially within the community of faith, if they
- 6:13wrong you in some way, if they hurt
- 6:14you in some way.
- 6:16This is Matthew 18, starting in verse 15.
- 6:18If your brother or sister sins, go and
- 6:20point out their fault just between the two
- 6:22of you.
- 6:23If they listen to you, you have won
- 6:24them over.
- 6:25But if they will not listen, take one
- 6:27or two others along so that every matter
- 6:29may be established by the testimony of two
- 6:31or three witnesses.
- 6:32If they still refuse to listen, tell it
- 6:34to the church.
- 6:35And if they refuse to listen, even to
- 6:37the church, treat them as you would a
- 6:38pagan or a tax collector.
- 6:41Okay, this is Jesus's classic teaching on confrontation
- 6:44and reconciliation.
- 6:46I love that phrase.
- 6:48If they listen to you, you have won
- 6:50them over.
- 6:51Jesus kind of has this bias toward reconciliation,
- 6:54right?
- 6:54If you can get to full reconciliation with
- 6:57someone else, that's the best outcome.
- 6:59Now, Jesus is a realist.
- 7:01However, Jesus acknowledges you don't have control over
- 7:03the other person.
- 7:04They may not listen to you.
- 7:05And so he kind of has this process
- 7:06of like, hey, handle it just one-on
- 7:08-one at first if you can.
- 7:09If that doesn't work, bring a couple other
- 7:11people.
- 7:11If that doesn't work, go to the authority
- 7:12structure, right?
- 7:13The church, the community.
- 7:14And even though he's talking about this within
- 7:17the fellowship of the church, I think that
- 7:19in general, these are just kind of good
- 7:20principles for confrontation and reconciliation, even outside of
- 7:24the church context.
- 7:25So in a workplace context, if somebody does
- 7:27something that you don't like, should you immediately
- 7:29go to HR?
- 7:30Well, depending on the nature and the seriousness
- 7:32of the offense, sure.
- 7:32But again, if it's one of those minor
- 7:34things, often the best thing is to just
- 7:36go to the person directly and confront them.
- 7:38Maybe you could confront your friend who's always
- 7:40late to a meeting.
- 7:41Maybe you're the person who leads that meeting.
- 7:42And so you're bothered that they're late.
- 7:44Could you go to that person just one
- 7:46-on-one, not in front of others, not
- 7:47to embarrass them and say like, hey, I
- 7:48would really appreciate it if you could show
- 7:49up to meetings on time.
- 7:50That would really help us, you know, hit
- 7:52the ground running and be efficient, etc.
- 7:55And again, maybe that person, all they need
- 7:57is somebody to let them know that punctuality
- 7:59matters.
- 8:00This has sometimes been the case in my
- 8:01life.
- 8:02You'll be surprised.
- 8:02You ask for change and then people change.
- 8:04It's like, oh, they just needed someone to
- 8:06ask.
- 8:07But if they don't listen to you, right,
- 8:09then involve other people, then maybe involve the
- 8:11authority structure in that case.
- 8:13So I think Jesus has some real wisdom
- 8:15and some guidance for us here that's relevant
- 8:17in the church, but can also be relevant
- 8:19in the workplace.
- 8:21OK, what's the alternative, though?
- 8:23What's the alternative to confronting someone about something?
- 8:26Well, in an earlier episode, I talked about
- 8:27Archbishop Eliud Wabakala of Kenya and how he
- 8:31gave a teaching on this verse in First
- 8:34Peter, chapter four, verse eight, which says above
- 8:37all, keep loving one another earnestly since love
- 8:41covers a multitude of sins.
- 8:43And Archbishop Wabakala's teaching on this was that
- 8:46this is not an excuse for you, like,
- 8:48oh, love is going to cover the multitude
- 8:49of my sins.
- 8:50This is a way for you to extend
- 8:53love to others, that your love will cover
- 8:55the multitude of other people's sins.
- 8:57If we tried to confront every single time
- 9:00anybody sins against us in any small way,
- 9:03we would only constantly be confronting people.
- 9:05Instead, when we love people, we can just
- 9:07be gracious about a whole host of people's
- 9:10imperfections and inadequacies and weaknesses.
- 9:12Not everything rises to a level of a
- 9:15Matthew 18 confrontation.
- 9:17We want to develop a character of grace
- 9:19and forgiveness where we're willing to overlook faults.
- 9:22We're willing sometimes even to make excuses for
- 9:24people like Jesus when he's on the cross
- 9:26and he says, forgive them for they know
- 9:28not what they do.
- 9:29He's basically making excuses.
- 9:31Now, again, we don't want to twist this
- 9:32and saying that we never stand up for
- 9:34ourselves or we never confront wrongdoing.
- 9:36The courage to confront a wrong is clearly
- 9:38there in the teaching as well.
- 9:40But again, we're human beings.
- 9:42We're sinners.
- 9:43There is a multitude of sins in any
- 9:45workplace relationship just because we're flawed.
- 9:48And again, we're going to rub each other
- 9:50the wrong way in different ways.
- 9:51Can you love someone enough to overlook those
- 9:54things?
- 9:54So there are kind of two pathways for
- 9:56us.
- 9:57One is this courageous confrontation, often best to
- 9:59do one on one.
- 10:00The other is just let it go.
- 10:03Love covers a multitude of sins.
- 10:04You don't need to confront every little thing.
- 10:06Just have a gracious attitude towards the other
- 10:08person.
- 10:09So those are kind of our two options
- 10:10given to us in scripture of how we
- 10:12can navigate the reality of other people's sin
- 10:15in the workplace.
- 10:16But I do want to go back to
- 10:17that parable from Jesus because I think that
- 10:19gets to an even deeper reality of how
- 10:22we can develop that kind of gracious character.
- 10:25How do we get to the point where
- 10:26we're actually ready to forgive someone else when
- 10:29they do hurt us?
- 10:30Maybe even in a more serious way that
- 10:32needs to be confronted.
- 10:34Okay, so this starts with the conversation between
- 10:36Simon Peter and Jesus.
- 10:37So Matthew 18 verse 21.
- 10:40Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, Lord,
- 10:42how many times shall I forgive my brother
- 10:44or sister who sins against me?
- 10:45Up to seven times.
- 10:47Jesus answered, I tell you, not seven times,
- 10:50but 77 times.
- 10:53Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a
- 10:54king who wanted to settle accounts with his
- 10:56servants.
- 10:57As he began the settlement, a man who
- 10:58owed him 10,000 bags of gold was
- 11:00brought to him.
- 11:01Since he was not able to pay, the
- 11:03master ordered that he and his wife and
- 11:04his children and all that he had be
- 11:06sold to repay the debt.
- 11:08At this, the servant fell on his knees
- 11:10before him.
- 11:10Be patient with me, he begged, and I
- 11:12will pay back everything.
- 11:14The servant's master took pity on him.
- 11:17Canceled the debt and let him go.
- 11:20But when that servant went out, he found
- 11:22one of his fellow servants who owed him
- 11:23100 silver coins.
- 11:25He grabbed him and began to choke him.
- 11:27Pay back what you owe me, he demanded.
- 11:29His fellow servant fell to his knees and
- 11:31begged him, be patient with me and I
- 11:32will pay it back.
- 11:34But he refused.
- 11:35Instead, he went off and had the man
- 11:37thrown into prison until he could pay the
- 11:38debt.
- 11:39When the other servants saw what had happened,
- 11:41they were outraged and went and told their
- 11:42master everything that had happened.
- 11:43Then the master called the servant in.
- 11:45You wicked servant, he said.
- 11:47I canceled all that debt of yours because
- 11:49you begged me to.
- 11:50Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow
- 11:52servant just as I had on you?
- 11:54In anger, his master handed him over to
- 11:56the jailers to be tortured until he should
- 11:58pay back all he owed.
- 12:01This is how my heavenly father will treat
- 12:02each of you unless you forgive your brother
- 12:04or sister from your heart.
- 12:09Jesus is giving a very sober teaching about
- 12:11forgiveness here.
- 12:12And what he does is so masterful because
- 12:15he starts with a character who needs forgiveness
- 12:18and then moves to the question of can
- 12:20that person extend forgiveness.
- 12:22And what Jesus is doing here is he's
- 12:24saying all of us need forgiveness.
- 12:27It's so easy for us to get angry
- 12:29when we're sinned against, when we're offended.
- 12:31It's so easy for us to get annoyed
- 12:32with others.
- 12:33We often forget we ourselves are often in
- 12:36the wrong.
- 12:37We ourselves need forgiveness.
- 12:38We need forgiveness first from God and from
- 12:41other people whenever we hurt them or offend
- 12:43against them.
- 12:44And so Jesus is saying God's forgiveness for
- 12:47each of us is like this huge debt
- 12:49that we don't have to repay.
- 12:51The debt of sin is totally beyond us
- 12:53to pay.
- 12:5410,000 bags of gold is what the
- 12:56servant owes his master.
- 12:58And in the light of the rest of
- 13:00the Jesus story, we know how Jesus paid
- 13:03that price as he gave his own life.
- 13:05When he was on the crossing, forgive them
- 13:07for they know not what they do.
- 13:09He was paying the price to cancel that
- 13:12debt of sin for each of us who
- 13:14are willing to receive his gift.
- 13:16So this huge, huge debt that we owed
- 13:19is canceled for each of us.
- 13:22So the starting place for each of us
- 13:23is not our need to forgive others, but
- 13:25our need to receive forgiveness from God and
- 13:27the offer of his forgiveness through Jesus's death
- 13:29and resurrection.
- 13:31Then we move to later in the story
- 13:32where the servant now has a smaller debt
- 13:35to forgive another servant.
- 13:36And what does the servant do?
- 13:37He refuses.
- 13:39And the sober warning of Jesus is if
- 13:42we refuse to forgive others, we haven't really
- 13:45reckoned with how we've been forgiven, right?
- 13:48That's what the master does at the end
- 13:49of the story.
- 13:49He says, look, I canceled that debt of
- 13:51yours.
- 13:52Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow
- 13:53servant?
- 13:54The point is that forgiveness recreates itself.
- 13:57Forgiveness multiplies because we're forgiven by God.
- 14:00We are able to forgive others.
- 14:02And so if we're unwilling to forgive others,
- 14:04we haven't really reckoned with how we've been
- 14:06forgiven.
- 14:08And so then Jesus has this very stern
- 14:09warning at the end that like, look, if
- 14:11you're really going to hold a grudge, you're
- 14:14going to be condemned.
- 14:15The only place you can ultimately really keep
- 14:17a grudge is under the judgment of God.
- 14:20It's like, whoa, whoa.
- 14:21Now, again, it's not that we earn God's
- 14:23forgiveness by forgiving others, but rather when we
- 14:26open our hearts to God's forgiveness for us,
- 14:29it will give us the power we need
- 14:32to forgive others when they offend against us.
- 14:35The key to being forgiven and the key
- 14:37to forgiving unlock the same lock.
- 14:40They open the same door in our hearts.
- 14:43Okay, so what does that mean in the
- 14:46workplace?
- 14:47It means in the workplace is that when
- 14:48we're suffering those little abrasive cuts and bruises,
- 14:50or even if it's a more serious thing,
- 14:52if someone's genuinely hurt us, maybe someone's spreading
- 14:54gossip about us or lying about us, maybe
- 14:56a boss is refusing to honor our boundaries
- 14:58and pushing us toward burnout.
- 15:00Maybe these more serious offenses are there.
- 15:03How can we push up that weight of
- 15:06forgiveness as God gives us grace?
- 15:08What does that actually look like?
- 15:09It looks like starting with our sense of
- 15:13gratitude for how God has forgiven us through
- 15:16Jesus Christ.
- 15:17When we return to the cross, when we
- 15:20kneel down before the cross and we humble
- 15:22ourselves and we thank God for forgiving us
- 15:24for our sins, that's what frees us to
- 15:27forgive others.
- 15:28So if you're struggling with something like this
- 15:30at work, if you're struggling with anger or
- 15:31annoyance, whether major or minor, with a coworker
- 15:34or a boss, go to the cross, kneel
- 15:38down, meet Jesus again in his forgiveness for
- 15:42you, and then turn and forgive your neighbor.
- 15:49Lord Jesus, thank you that you meet us,
- 15:52that you give us a way forward, even
- 15:53when we are hurt, even when we run
- 15:56up against other people's sin.
- 15:58Show us how to practice your kind of
- 16:00forgiveness.
- 16:02Deepen our sense of gratitude for your forgiveness
- 16:04for us.
- 16:06Do your work in us as we do
- 16:08our work with you.
- 16:14Thanks for listening.
