- 0:01Speaker 1: Murder sobbing icon by day, mom who Embarrasses her kids
- 0:07Speaker 1: by night, Brookshields is on Inside the Mom's Clubs. Welcome
- 0:14Speaker 1: to Inside the Mom's Club. I'm your host Monica Samuel's
- 0:17Speaker 1: and I'm here with my co host, Julie Orkiddelo. Julie, Hey,
- 0:22Speaker 1: we are empty nesters, but you're kinda not because your
- 0:25Speaker 1: daughter is about to finish her She.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Finished her freshman year and I think she's coming home.
- 0:33Speaker 2: You know, she's yet to be seen yet, but she's
- 0:35Speaker 2: out traveling doing her thing.
- 0:38Speaker 3: So I am she's gonna come barreling through the door.
- 0:41Speaker 2: And quite honestly, I kind of got used to doing
- 0:44Speaker 2: my own thing, but I'll I'll be happy.
- 0:48Speaker 3: To see her and then she has to go.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the beauty of this part of life. I
- 0:54Speaker 1: guess the college because you know, it's the summer and
- 0:57Speaker 1: it's not like they're just going back to school. They're
- 0:59Speaker 1: they're going back somewhere usually.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Right, And so I think that the hard part is
- 1:05Speaker 2: is that you you kind of mourn it.
- 1:08Speaker 3: You don't know what you're gonna do.
- 1:09Speaker 2: If you've been doing the mom thing for a while
- 1:12Speaker 2: and you're like, how am I going to transition, what
- 1:15Speaker 2: am I going to do? And then next thing you know, poof,
- 1:18Speaker 2: they're like back home. So it's like this motion that
- 1:22Speaker 2: a range of emotions. You're sad, You're happy, I don't
- 1:25Speaker 2: know what I'm gonna do with myself, and yeah, it
- 1:27Speaker 2: can just really get to you. And I have to
- 1:29Speaker 2: say I follow Brookshields and I remember seeing an Instagram
- 1:36Speaker 2: post quite some time ago about her child leaving, and
- 1:40Speaker 2: it was just a bunch of grief and what am
- 1:42Speaker 2: I going to Where am I? What am I going
- 1:44Speaker 2: to do with it? Where am I going to place it?
- 1:46Speaker 2: And I also was unable to take my daughter to
- 1:50Speaker 2: the airport a few weeks ago. I got my dad
- 1:53Speaker 2: to do it because I knew I was going to
- 1:55Speaker 2: lose it. So I think it comes and goes in
- 1:58Speaker 2: waves and then get used.
- 2:00Speaker 1: To the new you. But that's what happens, and then
- 2:03Speaker 1: you go through all that.
- 2:04Speaker 3: But I think that's amazing.
- 2:05Speaker 2: I think that we have this role of motherhood, but
- 2:08Speaker 2: you and I talk about this a lot. It's an
- 2:10Speaker 2: important role, the most important role, but there's other roles
- 2:15Speaker 2: in life. And I think it's important for kids to
- 2:17Speaker 2: see that that you know, I'm doing this and this
- 2:20Speaker 2: and this so I can be more available or a
- 2:24Speaker 2: better mom.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Or you know what I mean, listening to you when
- 2:28Speaker 3: you need it well.
- 2:29Speaker 1: And that's the exciting thing for women our age is
- 2:32Speaker 1: that this is our next chapter in life and maybe
- 2:35Speaker 1: this is when we do the biggest and biggest things
- 2:38Speaker 1: as far as professionally and all those things. We might
- 2:42Speaker 1: have stopped for a little while, but now we're going.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Great guns Brookshields, who were talking to today, She definitely
- 2:49Speaker 1: is an example to us of that she's Oh, I
- 2:51Speaker 1: think she's right to talk about things.
- 2:54Speaker 3: I mean, I think it's been a huge deal for her.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Here on the Mom's Club, we have a word that
- 2:59Speaker 1: we use or amazing, but it's better than amazing. It's amazing, amazing, amazing.
- 3:06Speaker 1: And today we are thrilled to have with this the beautiful,
- 3:10Speaker 1: the iconic Brooke Shields. Brooke, welcome to the Mom's Club.
- 3:14Speaker 4: Hey, I've been in the Mom's Club, let's see twenty
- 3:17Speaker 4: three years.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Yes, definitely qualify.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I'm thrilled that you're he and I know and I
- 3:22Speaker 1: know you're in the Mom's Club because you have actually
- 3:25Speaker 1: met my co host here, Julie. Your daughter and her
- 3:29Speaker 1: daughter were in a play together at wake Forest. I
- 3:33Speaker 1: understand that.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Play girl that was I felt.
- 3:38Speaker 2: I mean, it was like, Georgia, a little heads up
- 3:40Speaker 2: next time that you know, you play the role of
- 3:44Speaker 2: a crazy mom, so I can say that it was
- 3:46Speaker 2: nothing like how you were raised or what's going on
- 3:49Speaker 2: in this ouse?
- 3:50Speaker 1: Are you sure? Georgia told me she did base that
- 3:52Speaker 1: off of Oh, that's not true.
- 3:55Speaker 3: I'm kidding on Joe.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Yeah, And then there was a whole other sexual piece
- 4:00Speaker 4: of it, which I was like, Okay, what we're doing
- 4:04Speaker 4: that was no joke, Like the amount of time that
- 4:10Speaker 4: they had to prepare that and then do it being written,
- 4:13Speaker 4: produced directed, like the memorization and like it was. I
- 4:19Speaker 4: was so impressed by their talent and their hard work,
- 4:23Speaker 4: Like and I'm.
- 4:25Speaker 2: This very tough play to do, and I think you
- 4:28Speaker 2: and I were both eman from ear to ear.
- 4:31Speaker 4: And I'm so nervous. I was sick to my stomach.
- 4:36Speaker 4: And then I tried not to cry, and then she
- 4:37Speaker 4: was like, just don't cry, don't cry.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I think they were both pit sweating Brooke for sure,
- 4:44Speaker 2: I was flop sweat flop. So yes, it was definitely
- 4:49Speaker 2: a moment, but I was really proud of them it
- 4:51Speaker 2: was a difficult play.
- 4:52Speaker 3: To do, and yeah it was. I don't know what
- 4:56Speaker 3: to say except well, it's good.
- 4:58Speaker 1: And now your daughters have graduated, and now we are
- 5:00Speaker 1: all empty nesters.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Here now mine came back.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Oh okay, well all right, I say, lucky you. I
- 5:07Speaker 1: guess I don't wish well, I'm friend of.
- 5:11Speaker 4: I just got used to it. Like at first I
- 5:13Speaker 4: was gutted, and then I was like, oh no, this
- 5:16Speaker 4: is okay. Now I can I can actually live my
- 5:20Speaker 4: life a little bit without being completely preoccupied and dictated.
- 5:25Speaker 4: And then lo and.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Behold here they come.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Well, so now you're happy.
- 5:29Speaker 4: And then you're like, okay, it's rend free, but can
- 5:31Speaker 4: you at least put fishes in the sink plea do something?
- 5:37Speaker 1: So you you were moving on with other parts of
- 5:39Speaker 1: your life, and boy, howdy have you really been busy?
- 5:42Speaker 1: You are now producing and storing in a new show
- 5:46Speaker 1: which I love the name of it because it fits
- 5:49Speaker 1: all moms, because it's a phrase we can all remember
- 5:51Speaker 1: because we've all said it a million times. You're killing me,
- 5:54Speaker 1: So I just love the name of it. It's an
- 5:56Speaker 1: Acorn TV. Can you tell us a little bit about
- 5:59Speaker 1: the show.
- 6:00Speaker 4: Yes, it's it is a mystery O murder. Mystery takes
- 6:04Speaker 4: place in a very small town. My character, Alison Chandler,
- 6:09Speaker 4: is a very prolific mystery writer who's kind of coming
- 6:13Speaker 4: to the end of her tenure, you know her, they're
- 6:17Speaker 4: starting to she's starting to age out. Luckily, there's a
- 6:22Speaker 4: murder because that solves everything, and she gets paired with
- 6:29Speaker 4: a young, very different generation podcaster and it's these two
- 6:35Speaker 4: women that come together and end up solving this murder.
- 6:41Speaker 4: And the generational divide is a huge, huge piece of
- 6:46Speaker 4: it because it's basically what I experience with my daughters
- 6:50Speaker 4: all the time, that making fun of my lack of technology,
- 6:55Speaker 4: prowess and everything else. And there are these two women
- 7:00Speaker 4: really come together, and there's a maternal moment a bit
- 7:03Speaker 4: of it. There's a they learn from each other, they
- 7:06Speaker 4: grow with each other, but they're stronger together. Her character's
- 7:10Speaker 4: really good with forensics and facts and putting them all together.
- 7:15Speaker 4: My character is much better at motive and story and
- 7:20Speaker 4: character and why people would act a certain way, and
- 7:23Speaker 4: it leads us together and we end up solving mysteries
- 7:27Speaker 4: even faster than the detectives do. There's a lot of humor,
- 7:32Speaker 4: there's a lot of the sort of these two women
- 7:36Speaker 4: in different generations. She makes fun of me all the time,
- 7:40Speaker 4: but then my wisdom she appreciates and learns from, so
- 7:44Speaker 4: we end up learning from each other. She helps me
- 7:46Speaker 4: be sort of freer in my sexuality and in my
- 7:51Speaker 4: life and how I approach things, and I help her
- 7:55Speaker 4: become more focused and hone in on what's going to
- 7:58Speaker 4: give her a career. And it's a sweet relationship and
- 8:02Speaker 4: it's very funny.
- 8:04Speaker 1: So that sounds like it's a great show. You can
- 8:05Speaker 1: watch with your.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Old yeah, then you can watch with younger kids, like, yes,
- 8:10Speaker 4: there's a body that dies every week in this sweet,
- 8:13Speaker 4: little small main town. It's amazing how many murders there are.
- 8:16Speaker 4: But there's no like blood or gore. It's like it's
- 8:21Speaker 4: very Agatha Christie esque. You know, the body falls out
- 8:24Speaker 4: of the closet with a knife in it, but you
- 8:25Speaker 4: don't see anything. You know, it's it has that knives
- 8:30Speaker 4: out magist kind of tongue to it.
- 8:36Speaker 1: And that's fun. Have you have you always been drawn
- 8:38Speaker 1: to those kind of uh, that genre that are you
- 8:41Speaker 1: into mysteries and that's what drew you to this project.
- 8:43Speaker 4: Or what well, I've always loved that. Ag at that
- 8:46Speaker 4: Christie or Nancy Drew or I've loved that, and I
- 8:49Speaker 4: love these. You know, when you see, especially with Nancy Drew,
- 8:52Speaker 4: when you see a woman, you know, young gorilla at
- 8:56Speaker 4: the time, but like a female solving the mystery, you know,
- 9:00Speaker 4: that's a very powerful thing as a young woman to
- 9:03Speaker 4: read and and sort of latch onto the genre itself
- 9:08Speaker 4: with only murders in the building and murder, she wrote,
- 9:12Speaker 4: And this sort of historical affinity for this type of mystery,
- 9:20Speaker 4: especially in the world that we're in now, where there's
- 9:23Speaker 4: so much really dark drama and really gory drama. This
- 9:27Speaker 4: type of entertainment it kind of falls into family but
- 9:32Speaker 4: pushes the envelope a little bit, like we're a little inappropriate.
- 9:36Speaker 4: We you know, we show certain things that you you
- 9:40Speaker 4: know that would not be gate and g rated, but
- 9:45Speaker 4: but you're still but you're still okay and safe. Like
- 9:48Speaker 4: there's it strikes a really good chord. And so Robin
- 9:52Speaker 4: Bernheim and I, who I've worked with on multiple projects,
- 9:57Speaker 4: I said, let's try to create characters and a world,
- 10:02Speaker 4: and mystery is a very popular one right now, and
- 10:08Speaker 4: maybe we can pitch something. And the two eight the
- 10:12Speaker 4: age difference was I thought was a really good and
- 10:16Speaker 4: the kind of hacks way of starting in that world together.
- 10:21Speaker 3: I mean, I totally agree.
- 10:23Speaker 2: I love the trailer and it made me giggle for
- 10:25Speaker 2: sure because I have two daughters and I was like,
- 10:27Speaker 2: oh lord, I was like, this happens in our household
- 10:30Speaker 2: all the time. Do you have a particular memory about
- 10:34Speaker 2: making this and doing this that you think about?
- 10:39Speaker 4: So I sort of bizarrely obsessively watched the different trailers
- 10:44Speaker 4: because I have to see everything and we have to
- 10:46Speaker 4: kind of craft them for different shows. Yeah, we need
- 10:50Speaker 4: a trailer. I just love when my character Ali is
- 10:56Speaker 4: really flawed when there's a bit of physical comedy. But
- 10:59Speaker 4: even in What's what has been airing Now, where she
- 11:02Speaker 4: says I've never been handcuffed before and then she kind
- 11:05Speaker 4: of goes, well, what's not entirely it's sort of like
- 11:08Speaker 4: what did that one? So you're kind of like it
- 11:12Speaker 4: makes you like, that's not the stuff you hear on
- 11:15Speaker 4: TV often, right, and that you know antsy Acorn. They
- 11:21Speaker 4: let me be a bit inappropriate, push it and balance
- 11:26Speaker 4: it with these really beautiful, sensitive, sweet scenes between these
- 11:30Speaker 4: two women who are one is trying to find her
- 11:33Speaker 4: mother one is my age. She only has a son,
- 11:37Speaker 4: doesn't have a daughter, and is really trying to figure out,
- 11:40Speaker 4: oh my god, is this it in her life? You know,
- 11:43Speaker 4: as she has she aged out, and how do you
- 11:46Speaker 4: stay relevant and how do you you know, still teach
- 11:50Speaker 4: and how do you still grow and learn? So it
- 11:53Speaker 4: touched upon all of that, and the physical comedy was
- 11:57Speaker 4: just a joy and people are loving it like they
- 12:02Speaker 4: love it.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Well, we need some of that right now, Like you said,
- 12:05Speaker 2: like that's you know, definitely something that you know, lightens
- 12:09Speaker 2: everything up a little bit.
- 12:10Speaker 1: So I love having the humor aspect of it that
- 12:13Speaker 1: I would thoroughly enjoy. So you're you're producing it and
- 12:17Speaker 1: you're starring in it. What's that like?
- 12:19Speaker 3: Is that a lot?
- 12:19Speaker 1: Is that make it tougher?
- 12:20Speaker 2: Or is that?
- 12:21Speaker 3: What was that?
- 12:22Speaker 4: So I've been an executive producer before, but I've never
- 12:26Speaker 4: had this much input. Often you get the title of
- 12:32Speaker 4: an executive producer just so that you can at least
- 12:35Speaker 4: hear the network notes or the studio notes or streaming
- 12:39Speaker 4: notes whatever you call it anymore. And so the times
- 12:41Speaker 4: that I have been an epedia's just been really by title.
- 12:47Speaker 4: But to be able to have access to what everybody
- 12:50Speaker 4: is talking about behind the scenes. So it just gives
- 12:53Speaker 4: you a little bit more knowledge of what's happening with
- 12:56Speaker 4: your show. With this show, I have ever been given
- 13:01Speaker 4: this much access to every element, and I was in
- 13:08Speaker 4: every decision, every location of casting, all the wardrobe, all
- 13:12Speaker 4: the hair, all the all the trailers, all the edits,
- 13:17Speaker 4: all the So I was so much more ensconced in
- 13:21Speaker 4: the crafting of it, and I was able to fight
- 13:25Speaker 4: for things that I knew where I would be very
- 13:31Speaker 4: appealing to people, but you know, you don't know, And
- 13:34Speaker 4: then you're sitting in the premiere with total strangers and
- 13:37Speaker 4: you're just praying that they're reacting to the things that
- 13:41Speaker 4: you fought for, and see you said okay, and Acorn
- 13:46Speaker 4: was on board, and so it was all like, all
- 13:48Speaker 4: of a sudden, it was on me. So this was
- 13:51Speaker 4: just creatively a really important experience for me to be
- 13:56Speaker 4: able to be cast in something first just as an actress,
- 14:01Speaker 4: and then to sort of earn the EP position and credit.
- 14:07Speaker 1: So were you more nervous sitting there watching people watch
- 14:11Speaker 1: it with you something you created, or watching your daughter,
- 14:14Speaker 1: as you described earlier, appear on a plane in wake
- 14:18Speaker 1: forest what as a Mom, what did did which one
- 14:20Speaker 1: hit you out yourself in their position? Or watching your
- 14:24Speaker 1: daughter do that?
- 14:25Speaker 4: Oh, I wanted to throw up watching my daughter. Oh.
- 14:29Speaker 4: I literally was like, I don't know if I can hear,
- 14:32Speaker 4: I don't think. If I don't, I just don't think,
- 14:34Speaker 4: because you know, I'm used to scrutiny, like I'm used
- 14:37Speaker 4: to did people being tough on me and whatever, And
- 14:41Speaker 4: you just kind of going like, all right, look, I
- 14:43Speaker 4: did my best, I'm really happy with what I did,
- 14:45Speaker 4: I'm proud, whatever. But you're watching your daughter put herself
- 14:51Speaker 4: out there and on a limb, and you know it
- 14:53Speaker 4: matters to her and you cannot do anything about it.
- 14:56Speaker 4: You can't save it, make it better.
- 14:59Speaker 3: You just just got a buckle up. You got to
- 15:01Speaker 3: buckle up and just go for it.
- 15:03Speaker 2: So on, inside the mom's club, we can totally relate
- 15:06Speaker 2: to you going back and forth.
- 15:07Speaker 3: He is there one thing that your daughters.
- 15:10Speaker 2: I can name a few myself that go and say, Mom,
- 15:14Speaker 2: you've got to be kidding me, or I can't believe
- 15:16Speaker 2: you don't know how to do that, or anything that
- 15:19Speaker 2: they give you a hard time, like I'm not supposed
- 15:21Speaker 2: to put emojis on everything like that drives them nuts.
- 15:24Speaker 2: So between generations, I mean, I could go on and on,
- 15:27Speaker 2: but what's one that you hear often from your children?
- 15:31Speaker 4: Oh, it's all technology. It's it's it's what we put
- 15:36Speaker 4: in the show. When I was trying to apple pay something.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Oh my god, oh we're gonna say that, and it
- 15:43Speaker 2: was like apple pay, I bet yeah, And I'm like,
- 15:45Speaker 2: I'm doing.
- 15:45Speaker 4: This like a like a mime, like a mime dancer.
- 15:49Speaker 4: And she's going, oh my god, Mom, take yourself put
- 15:52Speaker 4: it there. And now it's done putting and you're in.
- 15:54Speaker 4: She's like, I just don't understand how you can be
- 15:56Speaker 4: so smart in some things and just so dumb. I'm
- 16:00Speaker 4: the technologically.
- 16:03Speaker 3: So now we're amazing, Well amazing.
- 16:06Speaker 1: This show has a second season. I've got another one
- 16:09Speaker 1: for you. I once couldn't make my font big enough
- 16:13Speaker 1: on the screen for what I was watching, so I
- 16:15Speaker 1: got a magnifying glass out. I literally put it up
- 16:18Speaker 1: to the computer and my son walked in. And I'm
- 16:19Speaker 1: an attorney, I mean, like, I think I'm a smart person,
- 16:22Speaker 1: and he walking said, what are you doing. I said,
- 16:24Speaker 1: I'm trying to see this. He said, there's a zoom button,
- 16:27Speaker 1: So yes, I totally. I totally can relate. Well, we're
- 16:31Speaker 1: so excited to see you are killing me and moms.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Like I said, you will not forget that title. Just
- 16:36Speaker 1: remember things you've always told your kids.
- 16:38Speaker 4: There's a murder every week. It's eightcorn TV, it's streaming now,
- 16:42Speaker 4: and it's also, yes, you're killing me, somebody dies every week.
- 16:45Speaker 4: But then you're also like, you know what you're doing.
- 16:47Speaker 4: You're killing me right now, and so it has a
- 16:51Speaker 4: devil on TNDRA and that's why I wanted to change
- 16:54Speaker 4: the title to that.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Yes, well, we love it, we can't wait to see it,
- 16:58Speaker 1: and thank you so much for being with us.
- 17:00Speaker 4: Well, thank you for having me on Inky brook all
- 17:03Speaker 4: in the Mom's club and with your wonderful grown children.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Check out Brooks new show on Acorn TV and check
- 17:12Speaker 1: us out on YouTube
