- 0:41Hello and welcome to Cancer Conversations On Talking FACS.
- 0:45This is your host,
- 0:46Doctor Jennifer Hunter,
- 0:47assistant Director for Family Consumer Sciences Extension at the University of Kentucky.
- 0:52Today,
- 0:53I'm pleased to welcome Charles mccann,
- 0:55a patient financial counselor in patient financial services at the University of Kentucky Marquee Cancer Center.
- 1:02Welcome Charles.
- 1:03Hey,
- 1:04how you doing?
- 1:05Good,
- 1:05good.
- 1:06So today we're gonna talk about financial counseling,
- 1:10financial service services that may be available to an individual or family that is coping with a new cancer diagnosis.
- 1:18And one of the things that I've learned through this podcast series and working with Marquis is about all the wrap around services that Markem makes available to,
- 1:28to their patients.
- 1:29And then I've also learned if someone um is not a patient of Marquis,
- 1:33but has been treating at an other cancer center,
- 1:35that there's very similar services at cancer centers across the state.
- 1:38And I assume a across the country.
- 1:40But today,
- 1:41we're specifically going to talk about financial counseling and I wanted to get started with the question of,
- 1:48you know,
- 1:49obviously when someone receives a cancer diagnosis,
- 1:51there's no doubt that they're feeling overwhelmed and that,
- 1:54that they have lots of questions.
- 1:56And probably one of the big questions is how are they going to manage their medical expenses associated with their,
- 2:04with their treatment?
- 2:05Yes,
- 2:06we do have a program is called the Financial Assistance program.
- 2:11It's a UK internal charity program.
- 2:14Um,
- 2:14it's not government funded and it's,
- 2:16it's,
- 2:16it's a very good program actually.
- 2:18Um,
- 2:18you can actually have insurance and still be eligible.
- 2:22It's based on household income and number of people in the household,
- 2:26such as husband,
- 2:28wife and minor Children.
- 2:30You can have other family members such as aunts,
- 2:32uncles,
- 2:33cousins,
- 2:34but they wouldn't be counted as household members.
- 2:36It would just be husband,
- 2:37wife and minor Children,
- 2:38biological or legal.
- 2:40You may have legal custody or guardianship of them.
- 2:43They have to be 17 years of age and younger to be counted as a household member.
- 2:48And if they're over 17,
- 2:49they'll have to be at least still be in high school.
- 2:52And what I've learned about this,
- 2:53you know,
- 2:54being over here in the marquee location because we have different locations throughout the University of Kentucky Hospital.
- 2:59Um and also um we have a location in um UK Samaritan,
- 3:04UK Kentucky Clinic.
- 3:05You can stop by any location.
- 3:07You don't have to be limited to,
- 3:09to marquee just to see me if you just happen to have an appointment in the hospital,
- 3:14you can stop in Pavilion A.
- 3:16We share the desk with registration there.
- 3:18Um We have a location in Pavilion H so we have a different location that service our patients.
- 3:25And what I've learned with this is that a lot of patients they will sit at home and won't,
- 3:31won't allow themselves to be treated for fear of their expenses.
- 3:35So I try to encourage them.
- 3:37That's the one thing that I do is encourage them to just and at least attempt to apply for the for the financial assistance program.
- 3:44It can cover up to 100%.
- 3:46Oh,
- 3:46wow.
- 3:47Well,
- 3:47yes,
- 3:47of your,
- 3:48of your medical expenses,
- 3:49of what your,
- 3:50what your insurance doesn't cover if you've been getting treated and you were not aware of the financial assistance program.
- 3:56We can actually backdate to any active balance that you have.
- 4:00If you are approved.
- 4:01If you qualify,
- 4:02it doesn't matter.
- 4:03It can be 2021 it can be 2020.
- 4:06It can be 2019 as long as it's not in collection,
- 4:10we can backdate that,
- 4:12that approved assistance to any active balance.
- 4:16I said if the financial assistance is primary,
- 4:19say you don't have a,
- 4:20a payer,
- 4:21an insurance payer and your self pay.
- 4:23If the financial assistance is,
- 4:25is primary,
- 4:26it can cover 100% or 80% and you can apply every six months.
- 4:30There's no limitations.
- 4:32So a patient doesn't have to worry about.
- 4:34Well,
- 4:34what am I gonna do a year from now?
- 4:36Or they're telling me that I have to come in for,
- 4:39you know,
- 4:40a week for the next,
- 4:41you know,
- 4:41six months or so forth and so on seven months or eight months,
- 4:44it doesn't matter.
- 4:45You can apply every six months patients to,
- 4:49to go ahead and apply.
- 4:51Yeah,
- 4:51it's amazing to know that programs um out there like that exist because you,
- 4:57you mentioned that oftentimes patients will,
- 4:59will stay at home and they'll be somewhat in fear uh about the cost.
- 5:03And as your role as a patient financial counselor,
- 5:07when you meet with an individual,
- 5:08what are some of the questions that they commonly ask you?
- 5:11How much does this program cost?
- 5:13Do I have to,
- 5:14do I have to pay anything to enroll?
- 5:17And I have to tell them no,
- 5:18it's,
- 5:19it's,
- 5:19uh,
- 5:19like I said,
- 5:20it's UK charity funded.
- 5:22We take down your information and the application is very simple.
- 5:25It's a very simple application.
- 5:26I just basically tell them that,
- 5:28that no,
- 5:28it's,
- 5:29it's of no cost to you.
- 5:30We get the application submitted.
- 5:32I do encourage the patients to call me back because I am not a part of the review process.
- 5:36So I don't know the outcome of the application unless you call me back in maybe two or three weeks.
- 5:42Three or four weeks takes about that long.
- 5:44I haven't called me back and if this hasn't been reviewed,
- 5:47I can email the review team and have them um,
- 5:50review it and get back with me.
- 5:52But that's one of the questions,
- 5:53um,
- 5:54what is the cost?
- 5:55And the other question is how much will I be covered?
- 6:00And so I always like to,
- 6:01you know,
- 6:02explain to the patient,
- 6:03get that out of the way because I've been doing this for actually December will be six years that I've been been in this,
- 6:10this department.
- 6:11And so a lot of times I can get those out before they even ask,
- 6:15but those are,
- 6:16those are a couple of questions to ask.
- 6:17How much does it cost to,
- 6:19to apply?
- 6:20Um,
- 6:20what are,
- 6:21um,
- 6:21how much will I be covered?
- 6:24How long will it,
- 6:26you know,
- 6:26will it cover me?
- 6:27Those are basically the three basic questions that they ask and,
- 6:31and one more,
- 6:32can I still be approved even if I have insurance?
- 6:36Am I still eligible?
- 6:38Right.
- 6:38Right.
- 6:39Kind of thinking about other expenses beyond medical bills that an individual may have,
- 6:45especially if they're having to travel for treatment such as gas or lodging food.
- 6:52Um,
- 6:52those type things if an individual is,
- 6:55is struggling just covering the expenses of being able to get to and from treatment.
- 7:00Are,
- 7:00are there services or programs available to help with those costs?
- 7:05Uh Yes,
- 7:05there are.
- 7:06And I also get,
- 7:07I get those questions a lot too.
- 7:08Is there anything that you can do to assist me with,
- 7:12with,
- 7:12with gas?
- 7:13Because I travel a long ways back and forth and how often,
- 7:16you know,
- 7:16they have to be treated for their um cancer.
- 7:18And so I always encourage them,
- 7:21I ask them,
- 7:21do you know,
- 7:22or have been um assigned to social work?
- 7:25Sometimes they say yes and they say no and then I have to explain to them.
- 7:28Well,
- 7:29you know,
- 7:29you will be assigned a social worker and I'm actually up here on the floor with the social workers and so I can reach out to the social workers and,
- 7:36and,
- 7:37and um ask about a specific patient and it,
- 7:39and they can go meet them at their appointment.
- 7:42And so if they say yes,
- 7:44um I do have a social worker,
- 7:46I ask them,
- 7:47do they know their name?
- 7:48And sometimes they do and sometimes they don't.
- 7:50So I,
- 7:51so the one thing I would like to put out there is get to know your social worker personally.
- 7:57Um She is the person or he is the person that you would want to speak with about these type of resources,
- 8:03whether it be lodging,
- 8:04whether it be gas cars and there are other resources that I'm not familiar with that they do offer,
- 8:10but get to know your social worker.
- 8:12And when you do meet with them,
- 8:14keep their number handy because they're always available.
- 8:17And even if they're out,
- 8:19you know,
- 8:20maybe it's vacation or they are,
- 8:21they can reassign you with another social worker until the social worker you've met with comes back.
- 8:27So they're always available.
- 8:29We've had the opportunity to interview several of the marquee social workers as guests on the podcast.
- 8:35And like I said,
- 8:36at the beginning,
- 8:36I've been so impressed with all of the services that,
- 8:40that marquee is able to offer to their patients and families that that are going through,
- 8:46going through treatment.
- 8:47Charles as we wrap up today,
- 8:49kind of 15 question that came into my mind when I'm thinking about just managing the the financial costs associated with the diagnosis is that obviously a person is going to be off work.
- 9:02Um So they might be missing paychecks or maybe they don't have enough leave or whatever it may be.
- 9:08Um What type of information or recommendations do you make for folks about their employer and short term disability or long term disability?
- 9:17And that's a good question.
- 9:18I actually had to deal with this yesterday.
- 9:20Sometimes the patients will ask uh uh where,
- 9:23where do I go to attempt to apply for short term or long term disability.
- 9:27And that's actually through your employer,
- 9:30if you're not familiar with,
- 9:31with,
- 9:31with that program,
- 9:33check with your HR department,
- 9:35you may be enrolled with so a short term disability and may not know it.
- 9:40And if you're not,
- 9:41it's something that they offer.
- 9:42So you always want to check with your,
- 9:44with your HR department and see what benefits they have to offer and what,
- 9:48you know,
- 9:48the enrollment period,
- 9:49if they do have it,
- 9:50when,
- 9:51when are you eligible to apply for the short term slash long term uh disability?
- 9:56So that's where you wanna go.
- 9:58And I think that's a great reminder for all of our listeners is to be checking in with your hr department.
- 10:04Be aware of the benefits they offer,
- 10:05know what open enrollment is so that you're also preplan for the future summing in case something does happen and you might need those resources available programs,
- 10:15cancer policies there.
- 10:17Uh Sometimes your employer may offer policies for,
- 10:21you know,
- 10:22for the future,
- 10:22you know,
- 10:23you,
- 10:23you just,
- 10:23you just never know and they offer that they offer,
- 10:26you know,
- 10:26cancer policies where you can be reimbursed for,
- 10:29you know,
- 10:30uh expenses related to cancer treatment.
- 10:33So the Financial Assistance program,
- 10:35it,
- 10:35it does have some exclusions.
- 10:37It doesn't cover prescriptions,
- 10:40oral prescriptions.
- 10:41Let's say that uh pills from the pharmacy,
- 10:44right?
- 10:44It doesn't cover that and it doesn't cover dental,
- 10:47it doesn't cover dental.
- 10:49So and those,
- 10:49those are a couple of questions that the patients also asked us about the financial.
- 10:53So I want to put that out there as well,
- 10:55but it does not cover prescriptions.
- 10:57Excellent,
- 10:58good information to keep in mind,
- 11:00Charles.
- 11:00So thank you so much for joining us today and uh sharing with our listeners.
- 11:05Thank you for having me.
- 11:06Appreciate it.
