- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Hi, I'm Dr.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Patty Ferris, and I'm coming to you with this episode of Skincare Confidential live from the Science of Skin Summit.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: We've had a great meeting, and I'm really excited today to be interviewing somebody who I've long known and admired, Zubine Meskinpoosh.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: I think I got that right, who is the president and CEO of Sentei.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: So welcome.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: So let's this is you know, I love the brand Sente, you know I'm a huge fan.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Let's start with just talking about the hero technology, which is the heparin sulfate analog and the patents that you all hold around that.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: Uh well, first, congrats on a fantastic meeting.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: A lot of fun last night, and congrats on five years.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: Uh, and the success.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, it continues to grow.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: So uh honored to be here.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: But um, yeah, so our our technology was developed by a couple of PhD scientists who ended up being our founders and you know, centered on this heparan sulfate molecule that's something that our bodies produce, uh, bathes all the cells in our uh in our body, and in the skin, it really serves some a critical function.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: And uh what it does essentially is it signs as a sense serves as a binding site for messenger proteins, messenger molecules that are in the ECM, um and ends up facilitating things like hydration uh down in the dermal and epidermal layers of the tissue, um, regulates inflammation, works with the growth factors that signal the cell towards repair and producing collagen and elastin.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: It all happens on this binding site, heparant sulfate.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: Uh, but it's a large molecule.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: And uh and as we age, we make less and less.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: So you have fewer of these binding sites.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: And you know, I the way I think of it is that the the cell with fewer binding sites can't necessarily function as peak performance anymore, along with all those good bits of messenger molecules that are floating in the ECM.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: And that's where Sente steps in.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: Um, our founders found a way to take this large molecule and change the size, shape, and polarity of it, but retaining the that crucial activity that it does, um, allowing it to penetrate topically.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: Um, and being very science-driven, uh, they did a lot of studies to prove the penetration in our topical formulas, um, and maintaining that same biological activity that's crucial for the skin cell to maintain good homeostasis.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: Um, so that's that's the scente story, and we have the worldwide patents on that.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: So um, the really cool thing about scente is you're only gonna find heparin sulfate analog in Sente.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: It it's it's so unique, it's one of the few really novel ingredients in topical skincare.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: So, sort of recapping it for our listeners, heparin sulfate is one of the glycosaminoglycans, so it's one of the gags everybody thinks of hyaluronic acid.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Of course.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Probably the most famous gag, but this is like its first cousin, a sulfated uh glycosaminoglycan.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: And as you mentioned, it's hydrates much like HA does, but it has so many more benefits.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: And I think for aging skin, probably the most important thing is down-regulating inflammation, so tamping down on that inflamm aging pathway.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: And then also being a shepherd, taking those growth factors that we know we need to use, like transforming growth factor beta, fibroblastic growth factor, and shepherding them into the fibroblast to make them turn on and make extracellular matrix proteins.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: So you took a foray this year into a very cool new arena, which is sort of an antioxidant defense serum, which you call defense C.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: So, first of all, why did y'all decide to do that?
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Such a diversion from your usual.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: Um, I mean, great question.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: And, you know, when we think about um uh this kind of staples in skincare, right?
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: And what do we need to do?
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: One is, you know, a good antioxidant to help prevent oxidative stress caused by you know UV exposure or different environmental triggers.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: And with that, you get the release of the you know advanced glycation end products, um, AGEs that can damage the skin cell, and so much more that's going on.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: And so vitamin C type products, antioxidant products are uh one of the staple products in a portfolio and in a regimen.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: Um, and that was missing in ours.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: Um, but we wanted to do it a little bit different.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: Um, so we uh take our HSA molecule, uh pair that with uh 20% THDA, the tetrahexaldesol of scorbate.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: Um twister.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, I know it is.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: I practiced that for a while.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: Uh and then um a proprietary antioxidant blend as well that works synergistically with the THDA.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: Uh so what you really get is, I mean, a really nice formula that's that's a powerhouse antioxidant, and and uh we've got some really nice both ex vivo and uh in vivo clinical studies to show the benefits of this, uh but very gentle because it's because of some of those properties that you mentioned with the the heparin sulfate analog that's in Sente helps to you know defend against some of the irritation that you can get with a vitamin C even a DHDA.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, any of them can be irritating.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: So talk a little bit.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: The uh ex vivo work was really interesting, and that I think really proves how protective and and what a great antioxidant defense serum it really is.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean it it was fascinating, and it was it was the first time I was directly involved in a study like this, and it was really cool um to see just with one application.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: So you take a you know a strip from one patient donor site um of tissue, and you take basically three punches um for each test you want to do.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: One is the the control, uh, then one you're gonna hit with UV light to stress the skin, if you will, and the cells, and then the last apply our product and then stress it with UV light and see what happens.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: And the goal is to measure certain um markers that are uh basically indicative or show that there's stress to the skin and some bad things, and so we did re repeated that three different times looking for three different markers.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: Um for HNE uh, which is uh oxidative stress, uh, we also looked at the the gamma H2AX, which is indicative of DNA uh damage.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: Uh and then we also looked at the the upregulation of the AGEs.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: And across the board, what we saw was the from baseline, if you looked at the tissue that did not receive one application of the product, there was a statistically significant difference from baseline from the baseline tissue as far as the expression of these different markers for after UV exposure.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: They they jumped up quite a bit.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: But looking at the tissue that got one application of our defense C product, there was no appreciable change uh from the baseline tissue in any of those markers, meaning, you know, at the end of the day, what does that mean?
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: Um we are able to defend against that and prevent some of these stressors that then all ultimately, you know, for for the listeners and the people at home that say, Well, what's this mean for my skin?
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: It helps to prevent that damage that we sh shows up as redness or uneven skin tone, textural changes in the skin.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: Um, that that's the benefit here.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Yep, so interesting.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: It really did mitigate oxidative stress on the skin and the advanced glycation and product accumulation.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: So really good protective effects.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: And then you did a nice little clinical, yep.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: And that was a multi-center study.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: It was, yeah.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: Two different sites.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: Um, so we could get a nice uh array of different types of patients and skin type.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: And really just looking at uh, and we used uh you know some a couple of very well-known dermatologists that run clinical studies.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: Um, we like to do though that as opposed to in-house or just a CRO because I mean you all practice.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: It's real neural experience and they're the ones that's you all see the patients every day, so you know what to look for and how to measure these changes.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: And and what we really saw was even as soon as four weeks on some of the parameters, a statistically significant change in brightness and luminology, uh luminosity, uh, fine lines and wrinkles, of course, and texture, the things that we would want to see.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: Um, and it's just bringing that cell back to you know the optimal homeostasis environment um and preventing some of this stress is on our skin every day.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: No, and the before and after pictures are so impressive.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: They were great.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: Really nice down regulation of redness as well.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: So you saw that erythema coming down with the heparin sulfate analog, and it's really brought anti-inflammatory effects.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: Well, congratulations on a successful launch.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: I I agree with you when you said, you know, I when I heard you say why you did it, it was really a missing part of the portfolio.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: It was now you don't have to, you can use Sente, Sente, and more Sente, right?
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: So thanks for joining me today.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Thanks for being at the summit.
