- 0:00Speaker 1: Well guys, as you can see, I am still coming
- 0:02Speaker 1: to you from the car, but I wanted to make
- 0:05Speaker 1: sure that we had plenty of time to talk about
- 0:09Speaker 1: the game that's happening this week, Florida Auburn. I am
- 0:12Speaker 1: so excited for this one. I feel like I've been
- 0:14Speaker 1: waiting for it for a really long time. This video
- 0:17Speaker 1: is brought to you by PrizePix. Don't forget, new users
- 0:19Speaker 1: can download the app, use our code, it's HMA, and
- 0:23Speaker 1: play a $ 5 lineup. If you win, you'll win $ 150
- 0:25Speaker 1: in lineups instantly. All right, so we've talked about this
- 0:31Speaker 1: game all summer long. And I understand that Florida has
- 0:35Speaker 1: bigger games on the schedule than this. There are going
- 0:38Speaker 1: to be games with probably more national attention and games
- 0:42Speaker 1: that probably mean more in the playoff race. And I'm
- 0:45Speaker 1: meaning that like that we could play spoiler for somebody else.
- 0:48Speaker 1: I am not sitting here predicting Florida is making the
- 0:50Speaker 1: playoffs after two games. But I am not sure that
- 0:54Speaker 1: there is a game on Florida's schedule that is going
- 0:56Speaker 1: to tell us more about where this program is right
- 0:59Speaker 1: now than Auburn. Because Florida and Auburn are in almost
- 1:03Speaker 1: exactly the same place. Two proud SEC programs, two fan
- 1:07Speaker 1: bases that expect to compete for championships, two programs trying
- 1:12Speaker 1: to get back to where they believe they belong, two
- 1:15Speaker 1: first-year head coaches trying two teams that are 2-0, and
- 1:19Speaker 1: now in week three, we get the first real measuring
- 1:22Speaker 1: stick for both of them. And this isn't necessarily a
- 1:26Speaker 1: statement game, but I do think it's a bellwether game.
- 1:30Speaker 1: It's a game that can tell us where these programs
- 1:32Speaker 1: are headed. Florida is 2-0 after beating FAU 66-21 and
- 1:35Speaker 1: Campbell 52-3. Auburn is 2-0 after surviving Baylor 17-16 and
- 1:37Speaker 1: then beating Southern Miss 43-8. Both teams have done what
- 1:47Speaker 1: they needed to do. Both have shown some encouraging things.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Both teams haven't really answered their biggest questions yet. I
- 1:56Speaker 1: need to know how does this team look against an
- 2:00Speaker 1: SEC team with SEC athletes in a game where the
- 2:03Speaker 1: talent is pretty close to even. For Florida, add another layer.
- 2:09Speaker 1: This is John Summerall's first SEC game as Florida's head coach.
- 2:13Speaker 1: It's his first road game. It's his first at-night in
- 2:18Speaker 1: Jordan-Hare Stadium. And Florida hasn't played at Auburn since 2011.
- 2:23Speaker 1: In fact, this is an old SEC rivalry that's been
- 2:26Speaker 1: played 84 times, with Auburn holding just a slight edge
- 2:31Speaker 1: in the all-time series. So if you want to know
- 2:34Speaker 1: whether the things we've seen over the first two weeks
- 2:36Speaker 1: are real, I think this is where we start finding out.
- 2:40Speaker 1: What makes this matchup so interesting to me is how
- 2:43Speaker 1: similar these two programs are right now. Florida finished four
- 2:47Speaker 1: and eight last season. They fired Billy Napier during the year.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Auburn finished five and seven and fired Hugh Freeze during
- 2:53Speaker 1: the year. Then on the exact same day last November,
- 2:56Speaker 1: Florida hired John Summerall and Auburn hired Alex Golish. Neither
- 3:01Speaker 1: of these guys were brought in to slowly build back
- 3:05Speaker 1: to being a respectable program. That's not the expectation of Florida.
- 3:09Speaker 1: And that's also not the expectation at Auburn. Both programs
- 3:12Speaker 1: expect to matter in the SEC. Both coaches also walked
- 3:16Speaker 1: into major roster turnover. Florida added 50 newcomers. Auburn brought
- 3:22Speaker 1: in 39 players through the transfer portal alone. So these
- 3:25Speaker 1: really are year one teams. And I think that's where
- 3:29Speaker 1: the similarities end. Because the way Summerall and the way
- 3:32Speaker 1: Golish are trying to get there is very different. Summerall,
- 3:37Speaker 1: to me, is a program builder first. So, yes, he
- 3:40Speaker 1: comes from the defensive side. Yes, he wants a tough
- 3:43Speaker 1: and physical football team. But his identity isn't really tied
- 3:46Speaker 1: to one system. It's tied to toughness and discipline, accountability
- 3:52Speaker 1: and adaptability. And that's really been Summerall's calling card throughout
- 3:56Speaker 1: his head coaching career. Before Florida, he went to four
- 3:59Speaker 1: straight conference championship games at Troy and Tulane, won three
- 4:02Speaker 1: conference titles, and took Tulane to the college football playoff.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Look at what Florida has done offensively. Summerall didn't come
- 4:10Speaker 1: in and force some system on his offensive coordinator because, hey,
- 4:14Speaker 1: this is my offense. He hired Buster Faulkner, whose whole
- 4:18Speaker 1: offensive philosophy is built around versatility. Faulkner called it a
- 4:22Speaker 1: pro-style hybrid offense. And the idea is pretty simple. What
- 4:26Speaker 1: do our players do well? And how do we put
- 4:29Speaker 1: them in the best position to win? Through two weeks,
- 4:32Speaker 1: it has been really, really efficient. Aaron Filo hasn't needed
- 4:35Speaker 1: to be Superman. Florida has run the football. They've created
- 4:39Speaker 1: explosive plays. They've finished drives, and they've gotten the ball
- 4:41Speaker 1: into the hands of guys who can actually do something
- 4:43Speaker 1: with it. Jaden Baugh had 160 yards and three touchdowns
- 4:47Speaker 1: against FAU. And against Campbell, Vernell Brown gave Florida one
- 4:51Speaker 1: of the most electric special teams performances we have seen
- 4:54Speaker 1: around here in a long time with two punt returns
- 4:58Speaker 1: for touchdowns. And y'all know that made my special teams
- 5:00Speaker 1: hearts happy. And that special teams piece is really important
- 5:04Speaker 1: because it fits exactly with what Summerall has been preaching.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Florida wants to win the whole game again, not just offense,
- 5:11Speaker 1: not just defense, field position, returns, hidden yardage, situational football.
- 5:16Speaker 1: That builds very Summerall. Now, Golis is different. Alex Golis
- 5:21Speaker 1: is absolutely a program builder too. but he's also an
- 5:24Speaker 1: offensive systems coach. He has a very defined philosophy, and
- 5:29Speaker 1: Auburn knew exactly who it was hiring and what it
- 5:32Speaker 1: was getting. Play fast, create space. Force defenses to communicate quickly,
- 5:38Speaker 1: line up quickly, and defend the entire field. But I
- 5:41Speaker 1: think people hear tempo and assume that means that Golish
- 5:44Speaker 1: wants to throw the football all over the place. It's
- 5:47Speaker 1: not really it. Golish has said over and over again
- 5:49Speaker 1: that everything starts with the ability to run the football.
- 5:52Speaker 1: The tempo is the stressor. The formations are the stressor.
- 5:56Speaker 1: The quarterback run game is a stressor. The spacing is
- 5:59Speaker 1: a stressor. But the run game is the foundation. And
- 6:04Speaker 1: Auburn has one huge advantage when Golish took the job.
- 6:07Speaker 1: He brought Byron Brown with him from USF. Brown already
- 6:11Speaker 1: knows the offense. He already knows the tempo. He already
- 6:13Speaker 1: knows what Golish wants. And he wasn't the only one.
- 6:16Speaker 1: 13 players followed Golish from USF to Auburn. That is
- 6:21Speaker 1: an interesting piece to the puzzle in year one. Florida
- 6:25Speaker 1: is installing a new system. Auburn's installing a new one too,
- 6:28Speaker 1: but offensively, a big part of the operation already speaks
- 6:31Speaker 1: the language. And we've already seen both sides of it.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Against Baylor, Brown threw three interceptions. Auburn never really got
- 6:38Speaker 1: comfortable offensively, but they did find a way to win 17-16.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Then against Southern Miss, it looked a lot more like
- 6:45Speaker 1: what Golish wants this thing to look like. Brown accounted
- 6:49Speaker 1: for 319 yards and three touchdowns, didn't turn the football over,
- 6:52Speaker 1: and Auburn won 43-8. So now Florida is going to
- 6:56Speaker 1: get an Auburn team that is starting to settle in.
- 6:58Speaker 1: And this is exactly why I think this mashup is
- 7:01Speaker 1: such a good test for Florida's defense. After the FAU game,
- 7:05Speaker 1: Summerall was very direct about what he didn't like. It
- 7:08Speaker 1: wasn't effort. It wasn't want to. It was awareness and
- 7:12Speaker 1: communication and situational football, getting lined up correctly, understanding down
- 7:17Speaker 1: and distance. Florida was too passive at times. Now, there
- 7:21Speaker 1: were moments when guys were... playing too far off in
- 7:24Speaker 1: short yardage situations. There were moments when they just weren't
- 7:28Speaker 1: processing what FAU was doing quickly enough. They were better
- 7:32Speaker 1: against Campbell, but Campbell can't test you in the way
- 7:35Speaker 1: that Auburn's going to. And this is what makes this
- 7:37Speaker 1: matchup so fascinating to me. Golish's offense is basically designed
- 7:42Speaker 1: to expose the exact things that Florida has said it
- 7:46Speaker 1: needs to clean up. Can you get the call? Can
- 7:49Speaker 1: you get lined up? Can you communicate? Can you handle
- 7:52Speaker 1: a quarterback who is a legitimate runner? And can you
- 7:55Speaker 1: defend the run without over-committing and giving up explosives behind you?
- 8:00Speaker 1: And can you do all of that when Auburn is
- 8:02Speaker 1: trying to snap the football before you ever even get comfortable?
- 8:06Speaker 1: We're going to take a quick break from the video
- 8:08Speaker 1: to let you know another way that you can support
- 8:10Speaker 1: the channel. First of all, make sure you're subscribed. If
- 8:12Speaker 1: you're not, do it right now. Second of all, you
- 8:14Speaker 1: can head over to patreon.com forward slash Alley Peak And
- 8:18Speaker 1: join our family over there. I drop little tidbits that
- 8:20Speaker 1: I hear about recruiting or things that are going on
- 8:24Speaker 1: within the program. If I'm going to do a video
- 8:26Speaker 1: on it, you're going to hear about it first on Patreon.
- 8:28Speaker 1: So go check us out over there. It's patreon.com forward
- 8:31Speaker 1: slash Allie Peek. Now, on the other side of the ball,
- 8:36Speaker 1: Auburn's defense is the first real test for Florida's offense.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Florida has scored 118 points through two games. That's great.
- 8:44Speaker 1: But FAU and Campbell are not Auburn. This is Aaron
- 8:48Speaker 1: Fiala's first real start in an SEC environment. Now, what
- 8:52Speaker 1: we find out about the efficiency when the windows get
- 8:56Speaker 1: tighter is going to tell us a lot about how
- 8:58Speaker 1: this season is going to play out. What does third
- 9:00Speaker 1: and seven look like when Jordan Hare is actually loud?
- 9:03Speaker 1: What does protection look like when Auburn can actually win
- 9:06Speaker 1: some of the one-on-one matchups up front? Can Florida run
- 9:10Speaker 1: the football when the defense knows Florida needs to run
- 9:13Speaker 1: the football? Can Filos stay patient if Auburn takes away
- 9:16Speaker 1: the easy throws? And maybe most importantly, What happens when
- 9:21Speaker 1: something goes wrong? Because something is going to go wrong.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Florida has spent two weeks playing from the position of
- 9:27Speaker 1: being in control. There are going to be momentum springs.
- 9:31Speaker 1: There are going to be mistakes. There are going to
- 9:33Speaker 1: be a point where somebody gets punched in the mouth
- 9:38Speaker 1: and then they have to respond. That is when you
- 9:40Speaker 1: learn about a football team. And Auburn needs this test
- 9:44Speaker 1: just as much as Florida does. If you are an
- 9:46Speaker 1: Auburn fan, You want to know whether the goalish offense
- 9:49Speaker 1: works the same when the speed on the other side
- 9:53Speaker 1: looks like SEC speed. You want to know whether Byron
- 9:56Speaker 1: Brown can protect the football against a defense with athletes
- 9:59Speaker 1: at every level. level. You want to know whether an
- 10:02Speaker 1: offensive line that was rebuilt heavily through the transfer portal
- 10:05Speaker 1: can hold up against Florida's front. And you want to
- 10:09Speaker 1: know whether beating Baylor was a sign that this team
- 10:11Speaker 1: knows how to win close football games, or if it
- 10:14Speaker 1: was just a game they escaped. That's why I keep
- 10:18Speaker 1: coming back to the word bellwether. This game doesn't decide
- 10:22Speaker 1: the season. If Florida loses at Auburn, the Summerall era
- 10:25Speaker 1: is not a failure. If Auburn loses to Florida, Alex
- 10:28Speaker 1: Golish is not suddenly the wrong hire. It's week three.
- 10:32Speaker 1: But I do think the winner walks away with something
- 10:35Speaker 1: really valuable. Proof. Proof that the culture is translating. Proof
- 10:40Speaker 1: that the system works against comparable talent. I do think
- 10:43Speaker 1: this is particularly important for Auburn. They have two different
- 10:46Speaker 1: paths here. John Summerall did not take many people with
- 10:50Speaker 1: him from Tulane. The only players he took were specialists,
- 10:53Speaker 1: which I think is the easiest thing to translate from
- 10:55Speaker 1: the group of five into power four. That's not what
- 10:59Speaker 1: Golish did. Golish essentially picked up his offense and moved
- 11:03Speaker 1: it north. Which one of those things was the more
- 11:06Speaker 1: successful path to winning quickly? We're going to find out.
- 11:12Speaker 1: I really think that this is just going to provide
- 11:14Speaker 1: us some proof that the things that these coaches have
- 11:17Speaker 1: spent nine months preaching are actually showing up when the
- 11:20Speaker 1: games get uncomfortable. And for the loser, you're probably going
- 11:24Speaker 1: to learn exactly what still needs fixing. Florida and Auburn
- 11:27Speaker 1: are both trying to climb back into the upper tier
- 11:29Speaker 1: of this conference. Neither fan base wants another three-year rebuild speech.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Neither coach was hired to simply make these programs competitive. Eventually,
- 11:38Speaker 1: Florida has to beat teams like Auburn consistently if it
- 11:41Speaker 1: wants to be what Florida believes it should be. And
- 11:44Speaker 1: Auburn has to beat teams like Florida consistently if Goalish
- 11:47Speaker 1: is going to get Auburn back to where that program
- 11:49Speaker 1: feels like it belongs. That is why this feels bigger
- 11:53Speaker 1: than just one conference game. It's Florida's first road test.
- 11:56Speaker 1: It's the first SEC test, the first opponent with enough
- 11:59Speaker 1: talent to punch Florida in the mouth and punish the
- 12:03Speaker 1: mistakes the Gators could get away with in weeks one
- 12:06Speaker 1: and two. It's the first time we really get to
- 12:09Speaker 1: see whether Florida's improved special teams, efficient offense, and still
- 12:13Speaker 1: developing defense can all work together when the margin gets
- 12:17Speaker 1: a lot smaller. And it's the first time we get
- 12:19Speaker 1: to compare John Summerall's Florida directly against another first-year SEC rebuild.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Two programs, two new coaches, two completely different philosophies, and
- 12:30Speaker 1: two 2-0 teams. And one game that might tell us
- 12:34Speaker 1: more about where both of these programs are than anything
- 12:38Speaker 1: we've seen so far this season, Florida Auburn may not
- 12:41Speaker 1: be the biggest game on the schedule. But right now,
- 12:44Speaker 1: it might be the most important measuring stick. Because Saturday
- 12:48Speaker 1: night in Jordan-Hare, we stop asking what Florida could be,
- 12:52Speaker 1: and we start finding out what Florida actually is. All right, guys,
- 12:56Speaker 1: it's early in the game week, but I still want
- 12:59Speaker 1: to know, who do you like? Did you see the
- 13:01Speaker 1: line opened at Florida by two and a half? Do
- 13:04Speaker 1: you feel like that's right? Do you feel like it's
- 13:05Speaker 1: going to move later in the week? Let me know
- 13:07Speaker 1: down in the comments. A big thank you to our
- 13:09Speaker 1: partners over at PrizePix. Don't forget, all new users can
- 13:12Speaker 1: download the app, play a $ 5 lineup using our code.
- 13:15Speaker 1: It's HMA. And if you win, you'll get $ 150 in
- 13:18Speaker 1: lineups instantly. We appreciate PrizePix for all your support. And
- 13:22Speaker 1: I appreciate you guys for sticking around with me through
- 13:25Speaker 1: the video in the car. I will see you a
- 13:27Speaker 1: lot more this week. Go Gators!
