Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Manhattan, It's Been Real
Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily a body here bringing you another installment
- 0:23Speaker 1: of five Minute Friday, the first for season six. I
- 0:29Speaker 1: feel like I've been having to do that a lot lately.
- 0:31Speaker 1: I feel like I've been having to take a lot
- 0:32Speaker 1: of deep breaths because I have been living in like
- 0:36Speaker 1: a state of overwhelm, which is to be expected because
- 0:41Speaker 1: I in under a week am moving from the Upper
- 0:45Speaker 1: east Side to Brooklyn. I'm changing Burrows. It's something I
- 0:49Speaker 1: never expected in my life that I would be living
- 0:54Speaker 1: in Brooklyn. And work is also super hectic. With last
- 0:58Speaker 1: week's special series, there was a lot going on, and
- 1:01Speaker 1: it just has life new challenges for me each and
- 1:06Speaker 1: every day. So it's interesting because for the most part,
- 1:10Speaker 1: I would say in the weeks leading up to now,
- 1:12Speaker 1: in the week's leading up to my move, I've been
- 1:15Speaker 1: really excited. I felt really purposeful with this. I felt
- 1:20Speaker 1: very sure of my decision. Last week, I went to
- 1:23Speaker 1: go measure the apartment and it was the first time
- 1:26Speaker 1: that I went there that the apartment was completely empty.
- 1:29Speaker 1: When I initially saw the space, there was a couple
- 1:32Speaker 1: still living there, and so I stood in the middle
- 1:34Speaker 1: of the apartment and I'm just like looking around me
- 1:37Speaker 1: kind of an awe of the fact that this is
- 1:40Speaker 1: going to be my space, and it's going to be
- 1:42Speaker 1: my home, and it's something that I always dreamed for
- 1:45Speaker 1: myself but just never really thought was going to happen.
- 1:51Speaker 1: I left the apartment and I went for a walk
- 1:53Speaker 1: around the neighborhood, and I stopped and did some work
- 1:55Speaker 1: at a cafe for a while, and just sitting there
- 1:58Speaker 1: and looking around me and seeing the people that were
- 2:01Speaker 1: walking by, the kinds of people that were walking by,
- 2:03Speaker 1: I felt truly at home. I felt like there was
- 2:06Speaker 1: so much promise about me being in this place and
- 2:11Speaker 1: spending time in this place in the weeks going forward.
- 2:14Speaker 1: But I digress, because Thursday morning, I went on a
- 2:17Speaker 1: run and I decided that I wanted to run down
- 2:23Speaker 1: Library Way in Central Park, which is kind of in
- 2:25Speaker 1: the middle of Central Park near the Big Fountain. A
- 2:28Speaker 1: lot of movies are filmed there. And I literally get
- 2:33Speaker 1: to the top of Library Way and I'm starting to
- 2:35Speaker 1: run down it, and emotion just completely overtook me. Like
- 2:40Speaker 1: I expected to feel some kind of way, maybe because
- 2:42Speaker 1: I don't run there often and it's quintessential New York,
- 2:46Speaker 1: But all of a sudden, I just was crying, and
- 2:51Speaker 1: it felt literally like uncontrollable, and it just hit me
- 2:55Speaker 1: all at once that I have spent ten years in
- 2:59Speaker 1: the neighborhood, ten years, and I get it. Moving to
- 3:03Speaker 1: Brooklyn isn't like me moving to Los Angeles, but it's
- 3:07Speaker 1: still a really big change for me, and it's a
- 3:09Speaker 1: really big change that I'm undertaking on my own. You know,
- 3:12Speaker 1: when I moved to the Upper east Side, a big
- 3:15Speaker 1: part of it was because of the cost, but it
- 3:17Speaker 1: was also because I had a lot of friends in
- 3:19Speaker 1: the area, and me moving to Brooklyn has nothing to
- 3:23Speaker 1: do with who's in Brooklyn necessarily, but more so, what
- 3:26Speaker 1: was an opportunity for me in that space, What I
- 3:29Speaker 1: could afford in that space, what I could make my
- 3:32Speaker 1: own in that space. And so super emotional on my run,
- 3:38Speaker 1: stopped to literally cry for a minute. And I also
- 3:43Speaker 1: couldn't help but think about all the memories that I've
- 3:47Speaker 1: made uptown. I've been uptown for so long. All of
- 3:50Speaker 1: my New York memories are rooted here. I fell in
- 3:53Speaker 1: love three times at least while living here. I built
- 3:57Speaker 1: my business here, I launched this podcast. I commuted so
- 4:01Speaker 1: many days from here, and so it's just it's a lot,
- 4:07Speaker 1: but I know this to be true, that that emotion
- 4:10Speaker 1: really instilled in me that I am nowhere and you're
- 4:13Speaker 1: ready to leave the New York area anytime soon, although
- 4:16Speaker 1: I certainly wondered that at times briefly during the pandemic,
- 4:20Speaker 1: and it also reaffirmed to me the idea that you
- 4:22Speaker 1: can be both scared and excited at the same time.
- 4:25Speaker 1: And a good friend reminded me yesterday that I'm in
- 4:28Speaker 1: the driver's seat right and Brooklyn is the next chapter
- 4:32Speaker 1: in my story, and I get to decide what success
- 4:35Speaker 1: there looks like and even how long I stay if
- 4:38Speaker 1: I don't love it. Not that I'm not expecting not
- 4:40Speaker 1: to love it, but if I don't love it, I
- 4:42Speaker 1: can grow from that experience and I'll be ready to
- 4:45Speaker 1: move on to whatever the next chapter is after that.
- 4:50Speaker 1: This is a big opportunity, and again, it can be
- 4:52Speaker 1: both scary and exciting, but it's one that I know
- 4:56Speaker 1: in my soul is the right one for me. Prompt
- 5:00Speaker 1: for you this week, what was the last thing that
- 5:03Speaker 1: both made you equally excited and absolutely terrified? Again, what
- 5:08Speaker 1: was the last thing that made you equal parts excited
- 5:11Speaker 1: and absolutely terrified. Highlights of the week this week are
- 5:16Speaker 1: actually all going to be podcast listens. I figure, since
- 5:19Speaker 1: you're listening to this one that you stick with me
- 5:21Speaker 1: week after week that you won't mind that much links
- 5:25Speaker 1: to all this stuff in the show notes. First up,
- 5:28Speaker 1: two goodies on Armchair Expert. In the last week and
- 5:31Speaker 1: a half, we've got Alexi pop Us and then Thursday
- 5:34Speaker 1: morning they released Prince Harry, which I swear I thought
- 5:38Speaker 1: that it was going to be a joke or something,
- 5:39Speaker 1: but it's really Prince Harry on Armchair Expert. You've heard
- 5:44Speaker 1: it from Alexi Papas on the show before, so I
- 5:46Speaker 1: won't explain too much, but I really appreciated the way
- 5:49Speaker 1: that her and Dak Shepherd bounced off one another and
- 5:53Speaker 1: his ability to pull things out of Alexi that I
- 5:55Speaker 1: haven't heard yet, So I really loved that. As for
- 5:58Speaker 1: Prince Harry, I mean he compares his life as a
- 6:02Speaker 1: royal like being on The Truman Show. There are so
- 6:05Speaker 1: many interesting tidbits in this interview. Definitely definitely give it
- 6:09Speaker 1: a listen. Also of Highlight, Glennon Doyle released a podcast
- 6:12Speaker 1: this week. It's called We Can Do Hard Things. I'm
- 6:15Speaker 1: really interested to see how she is as she falls
- 6:19Speaker 1: into this new role of podcasting. She brings in her
- 6:22Speaker 1: sister Amanda to chat on the show, and I really
- 6:25Speaker 1: just love the organic chemistry between them, and I think
- 6:27Speaker 1: this is going to be a really fun and exciting
- 6:29Speaker 1: new chapter for Glennon. And again that podcast is called
- 6:32Speaker 1: We Can Do Hard Things. Another good listen is Chandler
- 6:37Speaker 1: Smith on Trained Whether or not you're in a CrossFit.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Chandler Smith he is the top performing black male crossfitter
- 6:45Speaker 1: and he's got some really great perspective on how we
- 6:48Speaker 1: can realize our big potential, so to speak, both in
- 6:50Speaker 1: sport and in life. He's an Army soldier and he
- 6:54Speaker 1: talks with past hurdler Ryan Flaherty about everything from his
- 6:58Speaker 1: favorite junk food to his secret it's to keeping cool
- 7:01Speaker 1: under pressure. And now a listener question.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Hi, Emily, So you always have the most impressive closet
- 7:09Speaker 2: purges and as you prep for a move and I'm
- 7:12Speaker 2: assuming another closet purge, I'm wondering if you have any
- 7:16Speaker 2: solid mass follow tips for the rest of us. Congrats
- 7:20Speaker 2: and good luck with your moves. Thanks.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Ooh, this is literally what's on deck for me this weekend.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Great question. So, I think the classic Marie condo takeaway.
- 7:31Speaker 1: If you pick something up and it doesn't bring you joy,
- 7:34Speaker 1: get rid of it. I don't know every piece of item,
- 7:37Speaker 1: every piece of clothing that I'm going to pick up,
- 7:39Speaker 1: is going to bring me a lot of joy, so
- 7:40Speaker 1: that tactic doesn't work for everything. But if there is
- 7:43Speaker 1: something I have not worn in a full calendar year,
- 7:46Speaker 1: and trust me, I have plenty of that stuff, that
- 7:49Speaker 1: is kind of my barometer. I don't know if that's
- 7:52Speaker 1: the right word in this instance, but that is what
- 7:54Speaker 1: I'm be saying. What's coming with me to Brooklyn and
- 7:57Speaker 1: what's not coming with me to Brooklyn. I realize that
- 7:59Speaker 1: I haven't worn a full length running tank top. I've
- 8:01Speaker 1: been wearing more cropped length running tank tops with high
- 8:04Speaker 1: waisted shorts and tights. I have worn a full length
- 8:08Speaker 1: running tank top in maybe a year, which is insane.
- 8:12Speaker 1: So that means that I don't need to bring twenty
- 8:14Speaker 1: of them with me in my move. I'm also just
- 8:18Speaker 1: tossing stuff that I have better versions or new versions of.
- 8:21Speaker 1: So I literally went through a basket of twelve umbrellas
- 8:25Speaker 1: the other day. I used two of them. I tossed
- 8:28Speaker 1: ten dishes that I've had for eight to ten years
- 8:31Speaker 1: that are completely scratched up, that have come with me
- 8:33Speaker 1: to not just one, not two, not three, but four apartments.
- 8:37Speaker 1: M it's time to get some new ones. And when
- 8:39Speaker 1: it comes to organization, what I've come to learn is
- 8:42Speaker 1: I have a lot of sneakers, and some of them
- 8:45Speaker 1: I had been storing in a lower shelf on the
- 8:47Speaker 1: bottom of my closet behind some backpacks, well keeping them there.
- 8:52Speaker 1: I realized I don't use them, and if I'm not
- 8:54Speaker 1: using them, they, even though they might be cute, fall
- 8:57Speaker 1: into the you've got to get rid of these. Get
- 9:00Speaker 1: rid of these in that instance, I mean donate them.
- 9:03Speaker 1: So I would just really trust your gut and be
- 9:06Speaker 1: mindful of what you can donate, what you can give
- 9:09Speaker 1: to someone who may want it or need it, what
- 9:11Speaker 1: you might even be able to sell and make a
- 9:13Speaker 1: few bucks. There's a lot of options. Cleaning out your space,
- 9:16Speaker 1: whether or not you're moving, can be super therapeutic and
- 9:20Speaker 1: I personally am really, really really looking forward to a
- 9:24Speaker 1: fresh start. That's it for this week. Make sure you're
- 9:27Speaker 1: following Hurdle Over at Hurdle podcast. I'm over at Emily
- 9:30Speaker 1: a Body and I would love it if you're still listening,
- 9:33Speaker 1: consider leaving me a voice message, ask me a question
- 9:36Speaker 1: to be featured in an upcoming episode of the show.
- 9:39Speaker 1: A link to do that is in the show notes.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Yeah,
