- 0:56Y'all make it live and make it live for my good friend miss tarika
- 0:59lachey or aka miss me my
- 1:02jankins in the building hey how y'all
- 1:05doing we finally i'm finally here yeah buddy i'm finally here i'm excited to
- 1:11be here with you today no no thank you thank you thank you i'm glad to have
- 1:14you on have you on the podcast so let's just let's just dive into it because
- 1:18right now like when people like they may not used to be seeing you like this,
- 1:25like on the comedy stage and stuff all like that.
- 1:29Whenever like we see you usually like a character and stuff like this,
- 1:33a Miss Meemaw character let me show people first that way if anybody's confused
- 1:37this is usually what she looks like when you might see her on stage and stuff all like that that's me,
- 1:44that's my alter ego right there so this Miss Meemaw character how did you come
- 1:49up with like come up with her?
- 1:52So I just have to go back. Well, ever since I was a little girl,
- 1:57I've always been infatuated with older women.
- 2:01You know, at church, I used to love the older women that dress up and the hats,
- 2:07you know, that'd be the sharpest ones.
- 2:09And I used to be like, I can't wait to get old.
- 2:11So I've always had an infatuation with them.
- 2:14But as far as the Meemaw character, you know,
- 2:19During the pandemic, I was at home and you know how they kept on saying,
- 2:25wash your hands, wash your hands.
- 2:28And I was, I was getting irritated. Like, why do people have to be reminded to wash their hands?
- 2:35And so my great grandmother, God rest her soul, Dora Holmes,
- 2:39you know, she would just speak her mind.
- 2:43Like sometimes it's like, grandma, you can't say that in front of people, but she didn't care.
- 2:48And then I seen a wig from a production that I was in.
- 2:52It was called Damaged and it was like a gray wig. So I was like,
- 2:57let me just put the gray wig on.
- 2:59Now I put the gray wig on and I just started talking.
- 3:04I know about five people probably was watching at that time because I didn't
- 3:08really have a social media presence.
- 3:10So I was like, I'm just going to do it.
- 3:14And so, and at that time I was going through a depression, you know,
- 3:19being inside the house, not going anywhere. I have been really sad.
- 3:23So I'm like, well, I want to make somebody laugh because I need laughter.
- 3:29Somebody else might need this laugh. So I did a whole thing about washing the
- 3:34hands and I'm tired of hearing it.
- 3:36And I forgot everything that I said, but I posted, I just said, I just posted it.
- 3:40I'm like, everybody else posted stuff. Let me just try to post something.
- 3:44And so I posted it and then people were like, that was funny.
- 3:49And I'm like, Oh, it's people watching.
- 3:51And I would get, and so then another person was like.
- 3:57What me and I think about this? It inboxed me. And I'm like,
- 4:01okay, let me do a video on that.
- 4:03And so one of my friends, Stephanie Nelson, shout out to her. She has steps.
- 4:10She has a dance studio.
- 4:12And so she was like, come to the dance studio.
- 4:16We're going to have a block party. And she was like, and dress up like your character.
- 4:20She was like, people need to see who she is and the world need to know who you are.
- 4:27And I'm like, girl, nobody ain't checking for me like that. She was like,
- 4:30no, you have something. So come.
- 4:32So I went to her block party.
- 4:36It was in Brentwood and I performed, you know, cause I love to dance.
- 4:41And so she was like, sis, she was like, these women want to know who you are.
- 4:46They asked, are you my grandmother?
- 4:48How do I know you? You such a cool old lady
- 4:51can i tell him i was like well just wait
- 4:54till i leave don't do it just wait till i leave so then
- 4:58she ended up saying that and then
- 5:01my other friend called me to host her
- 5:03party and i and she was like but i
- 5:06don't know if i want you as your regular self or i
- 5:09want that character that you do and i'm
- 5:12like for real you serious she was like
- 5:15and her production team said we want the old lady
- 5:18character and so she was like what name do
- 5:21i put and i was like i don't
- 5:24know i haven't thought that far because i didn't think people would
- 5:27really be digging it and so she was
- 5:31like well what i was like well i don't know i said put me ma on there and she
- 5:36was like okay and then jenkins i used to love a living color right you remember
- 5:42the lady be like what you say about miss jenkins are you So that's why it's me, my Jenkins.
- 5:49So that's where the Jenkins part come in. And then.
- 5:53From then on, Jerry reached out to me because I had let him know that I thought
- 6:00about doing comedy, but more of comedy online, not standing in front of people.
- 6:06Because I did not think that I could stand in front of people.
- 6:11He was like, no. I said, no.
- 6:12I said, I'm just naturally funny. I like to tell jokes, but I'm like standing
- 6:16in front of people and telling jokes.
- 6:19It's going to hurt my feelings if they don't laugh. So I'm like, I can't do it.
- 6:22And so I went to one of his shows and
- 6:25he was like do you think you can do it he was like because if you
- 6:28want to he said I'll put you on for
- 6:31next month and he was like I'll pay you as your first
- 6:35paid comedian I was terrified but I said okay and here we are it's going on
- 6:42my fifth year so you say Jerry talk about Jerry Law yeah Jerry Law where'd you
- 6:48say the spot was at I was at And San Leandro at the 40 and up club, I think.
- 6:54No, I was thinking you were at Tom Matisse University. It was Tom Matisse,
- 6:57yeah, yeah. Yeah, so I started, and then I did that. He gave me my seven minutes.
- 7:00That was the longest seven minutes of my life. And then after that,
- 7:05he called me and then asked me if I wanted to do it.
- 7:09He wanted to help develop me as a comedian. So I would do it every fourth Saturday of the month.
- 7:16Yeah. When you did your first seven minutes, did you have your jokes written down?
- 7:22Or were you like, I'm going to just go up there and just talk my shit?
- 7:25No, I actually wrote some stuff down.
- 7:29And even to this day, I write stuff. And I'm like, okay, I'm going to say it
- 7:33like this. I'm going to say it like this. And I'm going to say it like this.
- 7:37It'll never go that way. It'll never go that way. Never.
- 7:40Never. Never.
- 7:43But what they did, they played... music right and i love music love the dance
- 7:50so and i just came out dancing the crowd was like,
- 7:55and i'm like okay so that's why i
- 7:58can because i i love dance i used to be in back in
- 8:01my day back in the day i used to be on the dance team
- 8:04but i love dancing but seeing the crowd reaction to
- 8:07dance so now that's why i know they be like
- 8:10here she go with all that dancing sure is because
- 8:13that helps me you know yeah because like the second you get off stage because
- 8:16i said the first time i did see you was at um it was at tommy t yeah who what
- 8:20show was that was it it was a big sassy big sassy show yeah i think it was all
- 8:24women like it was something like that yeah and like they was like even like
- 8:29pointing out like watch watch her and stuff was that yeah it was
- 8:32and then and then like see like you doing the gigging and all that stuff it definitely like,
- 8:36brings a high level of energy to where like,
- 8:41it's like the sex you like get on stage and
- 8:44start dancing like the audience forgets about everything that
- 8:47like just happened before yeah yeah and they get and that and that's how the
- 8:52and and i always make sure like the hyphen movement i do other but definitely
- 8:57the the hyphen movement and one of the ones that i always come out to keep to
- 9:01speak you know yeah that's what they do you always pay
- 9:05homage to the soil to the soil.
- 9:10And I feel like he underrated like he prepared the way for a lot of stuff and you know I love Keek so.
- 9:18Everywhere I go I take Keek with me that's how
- 9:21I get prepared you know I got some gospel music to
- 9:24prepare for a show but I'm always playing Keek cause you
- 9:27do both you do both you do no you do
- 9:29mostly clean though well all my stuff is clean
- 9:32yeah but you know i sometimes i step on the line
- 9:35but it's all clean you know and that
- 9:38and i chose to do that because one as a
- 9:41christian woman but i work with children every day and just in case they get
- 9:47a hold of it you know but that has definitely opened up doors for me yeah by
- 9:52being clean yeah so i can i can do clean or i can be with the whoever but my
- 9:58stuff stays clean yeah the whole time.
- 10:00The dope thing about like what you say like being clean and like working with
- 10:04kids and stuff like that is like,
- 10:06i feel like it gives like your career like just
- 10:10that more extra years and stuff all like that because like
- 10:13they're like you like they're gonna remember that you do comedy
- 10:16and stuff i like that and like they kids now but one day
- 10:18they're gonna be 18 21 years old and stuff like that and they're
- 10:21gonna go to the club and they go hey that's the lady that yeah stuff
- 10:24like that so now you got all you're building a whole generation of fans right now
- 10:27that you won't even don't even realize that you're you're
- 10:30you're building i have i have some people but you do have you
- 10:33already have a yeah i'm having a
- 10:36follower but when you say little i have some friends
- 10:39that called and said like their little grandkids love
- 10:42me ma i did an open mic night and i.
- 10:46Was performing and i the little girl had to be
- 10:49about eight or nine years old but she was cracking up
- 10:53and i'm like wow you know like the
- 10:56just seeing a nine-year-old being able
- 10:59to entertain her and i mean she was talking back to
- 11:02me in the audience and everything and so i mean
- 11:05like she gave me a hug and every time she sees me she gives.
- 11:08Me a hug and her daddy like she loves you and
- 11:12so that like you said just open
- 11:15up a whole nother so now i'm thinking about doing a children's
- 11:18book a cartoon or something yeah
- 11:21yeah yeah yeah yeah
- 11:26so that
- 11:31definitely made me think like yeah i
- 11:35just did a a women's it was
- 11:38the whole women it was a a conference at church
- 11:41i just did that so it opens up more doors
- 11:44yeah yeah yeah and then
- 11:47you also like say you had background in
- 11:50dance you also did like acting too for this was
- 11:53a theater or i did theater theater i went
- 11:57to freemont high school in oakland and i
- 12:00was part of the theater group there and i
- 12:04used to travel with a group called opera
- 12:07piccola there's a small it means small works but they were a company a theater
- 12:12company they used to go all over the bay area and perform so i did that when
- 12:17i was 16 so i used to travel with
- 12:19them all the time and do stuff but what happened is i wanted to be grown.
- 12:25And at the tender age of 19, I got married.
- 12:29And so I did the wifely thing and I stopped doing acting in theater.
- 12:37And then when we ended, so I was married for 10 years. And when that ended,
- 12:43I met a friend. He was like my neighbor.
