- 0:08All right, 1 Corinthians 3. But I, brothers,
- 0:14could not address you as spiritual people, but
- 0:17as people of the flesh. I forgot to do the children's
- 0:21thing. It's okay. Just totally popped in my brain.
- 0:24Like right now, but it's too late. I'm sorry,
- 0:26kids. I will get it right one week. I'm telling
- 0:29you. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for
- 0:33you were not ready for it. Even now you are not
- 0:37yet ready, for you are still of the flesh. For
- 0:42while there is jealousy and strife among you,
- 0:45are you not of the flesh and behaving only in
- 0:48a human way? For when one says, I follow Paul,
- 0:52and another, I follow Apollos, are you not being
- 0:55merely human? What is Apollos? What is Paul?
- 1:00Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord
- 1:03assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered,
- 1:07but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants
- 1:10nor he who waters is anything, but only God who
- 1:13gives the growth. He who plants and he who waters
- 1:16are one, and each will receive his wages according
- 1:20to his labor. For we are God's fellow workers.
- 1:24You are God's field, God's building. According
- 1:28to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled
- 1:31master builder, I have laid a foundation and
- 1:34someone else is building upon it. Let each one
- 1:37take care how he builds upon it. For no one can
- 1:40lay a foundation other than that which is laid,
- 1:43which is Jesus Christ. Now, if anyone builds
- 1:46on a foundation with gold, silver, and precious
- 1:49stones, wood, hay, and straw, each one's work
- 1:52will be become manifest for the day will disclose
- 1:56it because it will be revealed by fire and the
- 2:00fire will test what sort of work each one has
- 2:03done. If the work that anyone has built on the
- 2:08foundation survives, he will receive a reward.
- 2:11If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer
- 2:14loss, though he himself will be saved, but only
- 2:18as through fire. Do you not know that you are
- 2:21God's temple and that God's spirit dwells in
- 2:24you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will
- 2:28destroy him. For God's temple is holy and you
- 2:32are that temple. Let no one deceive himself.
- 2:35If anyone among you thinks he is wise of this
- 2:38age, let him become a fool that he may become
- 2:41wise. For the wisdom of the world is folly with
- 2:44God. For it is written, he catches the wise in
- 2:47their craftiness. And again, the Lord knows the
- 2:50thoughts of the wise that they are futile. So
- 2:54let no one boast in men. For all things are yours,
- 2:57whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world
- 3:02or life or death or the present or the future,
- 3:07all are yours. You are Christ and Christ is God's.
- 3:11Now. A couple things you need to be reminded
- 3:15as we're going through this. There is this stirring
- 3:18up, this quarreling happening among the people.
- 3:20They're literally debating over who follows who
- 3:23and arguments and just acting completely childish.
- 3:27And what Paul is doing here is he's rebuking
- 3:29them for that and the reality of what their responsibility
- 3:33is and who they are. It's very important. In
- 3:37other words, Paul is clarifying the identity
- 3:39of the people here. They are the church of Jesus
- 3:42Christ, the temple of God, the people of God.
- 3:46And he's saying, so act like it. That's really
- 3:48what he's saying here. Now, there are going to
- 3:50be four principles as usual. And then we're going
- 3:53to go through the verses, okay? True spiritual
- 3:56maturity is seen in how we live amongst one another.
- 4:01So you want to see how mature a people are? Watch
- 4:04how they live with each other. Okay. In John
- 4:0713, 34 through 35, it says it this way. A new
- 4:11commandment I give you that you love one another
- 4:14just as I have loved you. You also are to love
- 4:17one another by this. All people will know that
- 4:20you are my disciples if you have love for one
- 4:23another. Pretty simple, isn't it? Paul clarifies
- 4:26some things here in 1 Corinthians 3, verse 1
- 4:29through 3. But I, brothers, could not address
- 4:32you as spiritual. In other words, the word spiritual
- 4:36means to be controlled or governed by the Spirit,
- 4:39by the Holy Spirit. He could not address them
- 4:43as people who are governed and controlled by
- 4:46the Holy Spirit, but only as people of the flesh,
- 4:51people who are worldly and sinful. So how should
- 4:55God's people be described in how we live and
- 5:00how we... communicate with each other how we
- 5:03deal with conflict how do we deal how do we as
- 5:06God's people should live with each other especially
- 5:10around the community in which we reside are we
- 5:14governed controlled by the spirit no Paul says
- 5:18he actually calls them as infants but as people
- 5:22of the flesh as infants in Christ as childish
- 5:26untaught and unskilled is the word infants here
- 5:31He calls them childish. You're unskilled in the
- 5:35simple things of God. You can't even do the basic
- 5:38little things. And that's exactly what he says
- 5:41in verse 2. I fed you with milk. This word fed
- 5:47means to offer water. The simplest thing that
- 5:51I could give you as an infant is water. That's
- 5:56the idea. It's a simple gesture. It means to
- 6:00teach teachings easy to understand. I gave you
- 6:05easy to understand truths about Christ. How do
- 6:10we know that? Because the word milk literally
- 6:13means simple truths. So this is what he says.
- 6:17I gave you a drink of simple truths. I gave you
- 6:25a drink of simple truths, the simple things that
- 6:28are easy to understand, but you didn't even understand
- 6:32those things. And look what he says and continued
- 6:36in verse two, not solid food. I didn't give you
- 6:40solid food. I gave you simple truths, easy to
- 6:44understand truths. What is solid food? Solid
- 6:48food is that which delights and truly satisfies
- 6:51the mind. That's the deep things of God. Are
- 6:55we going to be just satisfied with the simple
- 6:58things that Jesus died on the cross, was buried
- 7:00and rose again on the third day, which is simple,
- 7:02but still difficult. We read that in chapter
- 7:05two of first Corinthians, did we not? But the
- 7:07reality is the simple things of God. Are we going
- 7:11to settle there or do we want to know our God
- 7:14as fully as we possibly can know him now? We
- 7:18should want to know him more. As the scripture
- 7:21says. So this solid food, Paul could not give
- 7:25them because they couldn't even deal with the
- 7:27simple things. And so he says, that which delights
- 7:31and truly satisfies the mind. We read that in
- 7:35Psalm 119, did we not? In Psalm 119, it says
- 7:38that the word of God is a lamp unto my feet.
- 7:42Not Psalm 119. The word of God says, how can
- 7:46a young man keep his way pure? By living according
- 7:48to your word. I have hidden your word in my heart
- 7:51that I might not sin against you. So the whole
- 7:54point is that everything concerning the psalmist
- 7:56in Psalm 119 is the word of God matters to him.
- 8:00It is his delight and it truly satisfies as honey,
- 8:04as sweet as honey. But, Paul says, for you were
- 8:08not ready for it. What were they not ready for?
- 8:12They weren't ready for the delights that truly
- 8:14satisfy the mind. They weren't ready to eat the
- 8:18solid food, the meat. People want meat, but you
- 8:21can't eat meat. Because you're not ready to eat
- 8:23it. And that's why when we're preaching and teaching,
- 8:27and we're teaching deep things of God, it's kind
- 8:29of like we got to do a little bit here and a
- 8:30little bit there. Sometimes I got to give you
- 8:33broccoli, and you don't want broccoli. You want
- 8:36the steak, right? Rare to medium rare. Salty.
- 8:45Mushrooms with some fried onions. Yeah, you want
- 8:49that, but you got to be able to drink the milk
- 8:51first. And so, Paul goes on, and even now you
- 8:56are not ready. For you are still of the flesh.
- 9:01You are still worldly and simple. Why? Look what
- 9:05it says in the rest of verse 3. For while there
- 9:08is jealousy and strife among you, are you not
- 9:11of the flesh and behaving only in a human way?
- 9:15Now, second principle. Well, let me say it this
- 9:19way. That proves the reality. Of mature believers.
- 9:22Is they don't get into jealousy and strife. For
- 9:25foolish reasons. You shouldn't be in jealousy
- 9:29and strife at all. As a matter of fact. Principle
- 9:32number two. All of God's people are one in Christ.
- 9:36No one is more valued than the other. Very important.
- 9:41Galatians 3 .28, there is neither Jew nor Greek.
- 9:44There is neither slave nor free. There is no
- 9:48male and female, for you are all one in Christ
- 9:52Jesus. Why do I share that? Because in verses
- 9:564 through 9 of 1 Corinthians 3, Paul gets into
- 9:59this understanding that Apollos and I are of
- 10:03the same fabric. Look what he says here. For
- 10:08one says, I follow Paul. And another, I follow
- 10:12Apollos. Are you not being merely human? Yes,
- 10:16you're being merely human. When you're not talking
- 10:20about the reality of following Christ and Christ
- 10:22alone, and he is the final and only one that
- 10:26matters, and you continue to look at others as
- 10:29a source of hope and not look to him as a source
- 10:32of hope, you are being merely human. This should
- 10:35speak volumes today. What then is Apollos? What
- 10:40is Paul? Slaves through whom you believed. Servants
- 10:44through whom you believed as the Lord assigned
- 10:48to each. God has assigned Apollos to do something.
- 10:53And God has assigned me, Paul, to be the apostle
- 10:57to the Gentiles. My responsibility is different
- 11:01than Apollos' responsibility. But there is one
- 11:03mission that we're both on. And guess what that
- 11:06is? The gospel. If Apollos waters and I plant,
- 11:10that's all that matters. Because planting the
- 11:13gospel and watering with the gospel is the gospel.
- 11:16That's his argument here. I planted. Apollos
- 11:19watered. But who gets the growth? Who makes the
- 11:23church grow? Who builds the family? God gave
- 11:26the growth. So what's a planter? Nothing. Who's
- 11:31a waterer? Nothing. What's it matter if I plant
- 11:36and it doesn't get water? Or if I water and it
- 11:38dries up, does it matter? Because in reality,
- 11:42there's something has to happen for that to grow.
- 11:45It's just a seed and it's just a water. God makes
- 11:48it grow. So neither he who plants nor he who
- 11:53waters is anything. Because without God growing
- 11:56it, it's not going to grow. But only God who
- 11:58gives the growth. God takes a dead seed and makes
- 12:03it alive. Lanny would probably know this more
- 12:05than most. He plants a lot of seeds, and I can
- 12:09probably guarantee that about 20 or 30 percent
- 12:12of the seeds that he plants never grow. Why?
- 12:16Doesn't matter how much he waters it. Doesn't
- 12:19matter how deep he plants it. If God doesn't
- 12:22grow it, it's not going to grow. That's the point.
- 12:26Look what it says here in verse 8. So he who
- 12:29plants and he who waters are one. This word one
- 12:32means one and the same. Same importance and esteem.
- 12:36We are the same thing. I'm the gospel planter.
- 12:40He's the gospel waterer. What's the same? Gospel.
- 12:42It's the same thing. One and the same. What's
- 12:45the same? The mission. I want you to hear that.
- 12:48That's the mission. You want to know what the
- 12:50church's responsibility is? It's to preach the
- 12:53gospel. The church's responsibility is to not
- 12:55take the seven mountains of influence. It's to
- 12:58preach the gospel. The church's responsibility
- 13:01isn't to go and take the government. It's to
- 13:03preach the gospel. That's the church's responsibility.
- 13:06It's the one mission that God gave for us to
- 13:09do. And we can't even get that right. We want
- 13:11governments. We want seven mountain mandates
- 13:13and dominion and Christian nationalism. But we
- 13:17can't even get the gospel right. And if you can't
- 13:19be faithful with the little, how in the world
- 13:21could you be faithful with the much? How about
- 13:23if we get people saved? How about if we preach
- 13:26the gospel and watch God save people as he grows
- 13:29it? And as a result of converted, real, true
- 13:32believers, then we start having a godly government
- 13:35and a godly schools and a godly. But no, we want
- 13:39to go and try to take over. To do what? Not preach
- 13:44the gospel. You can't even preach the gospel
- 13:46to your neighbor, right? What's most important?
- 13:51The heartbeat of the church. The gospel. Nothing
- 13:55matters more. For we are God's fellow workers.
- 14:02Verse 9. We are co -laborers. We are associates.
- 14:07We are helpers. As I said in first service, if
- 14:10you guys know Ted Sales, he's an amazing electrician.
- 14:14But every electrician, as a matter of fact, Andrew
- 14:17knows about this. Before you became like your
- 14:20own business owner, An electrician, you were
- 14:23what? A helper. He was an apprentice. Well, guess
- 14:28who the chief architect of his church is? God.
- 14:32Guess who's building his church? God is. Guess
- 14:35what you are? You're a grunt, a gopher. You're
- 14:39an assistant. You're a co -laborer. You're a
- 14:42helper. That's what we do. Why can't we be happy
- 14:45with helping? No, we got to build our own kingdoms.
- 14:49We can't even build a kingdom that he's given
- 14:51us. How about if we remember that, that we are
- 14:54his workers, fellow workers. You are his field.
- 14:59The word field here means cultivated field. It
- 15:02means a land already prepared and being fruitful.
- 15:08That's what that means. Not that God is making
- 15:12a field. God has already made the field. It is
- 15:16a completed field and it's producing fruit. You
- 15:19are that farmland. You. Isn't that amazing? We
- 15:27are God's building, meaning his structure and
- 15:30his temple. I want you to hear that. You're not
- 15:34making a field. God made the field. You're not
- 15:37making a building. God already made the building.
- 15:40How about just play the part you're supposed
- 15:41to play? And that's exactly what he says concerning
- 15:44the body. One wants to be an ear. One wants to
- 15:47be an eye. Can the eye say, I don't need you?
- 15:49Third principle. God will not only judge our
- 15:53lives lived in service, but especially on how
- 15:57we work, care, and guard his church, meaning
- 16:01his people. We're not going to be judged just
- 16:03on our lives and how we lived. We're going to
- 16:06be judged in how we steward. Galatians 6 .10.
- 16:10So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good
- 16:15to everyone, especially those who are of the
- 16:18household of faith. 1 Corinthians 3 .10. According
- 16:22to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled
- 16:26master builder, I laid a foundation. So what's
- 16:30this mean? That Paul, trained by God to be a
- 16:36builder of the church, he laid a foundation that
- 16:41was already laid. What is the foundation? Jesus
- 16:44Christ, the chief cornerstone, the gospel of
- 16:47Christ, and the doctrine of Christ. All of it
- 16:51is Christ. There is no other foundation besides
- 16:54Jesus. You want an excellent education system?
- 17:00Build it on Jesus. You want an excellent government?
- 17:04Build it on Jesus. You want an excellent medical?
- 17:08Build it on Jesus. But the problem is those foundations
- 17:11and those things aren't built on Jesus. Wrong
- 17:14foundation. Think about it. The only thing that's
- 17:19built on the foundation of Christ is this church.
- 17:23Now, look what it says here. And someone else
- 17:27is building upon it. So here's what Paul means.
- 17:30I, the Apostle Paul, went to you, Corinthian
- 17:34church, and I preached Christ and him crucified.
- 17:37And I have taught you the simple truths of doctrines
- 17:41concerning the foundational things of faith.
- 17:46And I have given you the gospel, Christ, the
- 17:49gospel, the foundational things of Christ. And
- 17:53now you, as a pastor, elder of the church, you're
- 17:59building upon something that I had already laid
- 18:01for you to build upon. And guess what? Someone
- 18:04laid a foundation here in 1884. You know what
- 18:09that foundation was? Go over to the old church,
- 18:12bottom left corner, Lutheran Reformed Church,
- 18:17built on biblical reform theology. That's what
- 18:21this church was built on. And it's been here
- 18:24for 142 years. Why is this important? Because
- 18:27it's about sound truth. It's about doctrine.
- 18:32It's about Jesus Christ. It's not about what
- 18:34I want, what I feel, what I think. It's what
- 18:37does the word of God say concerning himself?
- 18:41That's really what the church has been built
- 18:44on. And it's still thriving for each one. Take
- 18:50care how he builds upon it. I'm just building
- 18:53upon what was already laid 142 years ago. I didn't
- 18:57get the privilege to plant. I get the privilege
- 19:00to build upon what was already built. For no
- 19:03one can lay a foundation other than that which
- 19:05is laid, which is Jesus Christ. There's your
- 19:09answer. What is the foundation? Jesus. Now, if
- 19:14anyone builds on a foundation with gold, silver,
- 19:16precious stones, hay, wood, and straw, each one's
- 19:19work will become manifest for the day we'll disclose
- 19:23it. Now, I know I've heard, I mean, I used to
- 19:26teach this wrongly until I started growing up
- 19:30spiritually. Because we've all been told, like,
- 19:33it's all about what I do for Jesus. It's about
- 19:36my ministry. What I do, am I going to do it with
- 19:40gold, silver, and precious stones? The church
- 19:43here, he's talking about a foundation that's
- 19:45already been laid in Corinth called the foundation
- 19:48of Jesus Christ. And the church of Corinth is
- 19:53being built upon this. And there's someone who's
- 19:55coming and building upon what was already laid.
- 19:58Now, if that man comes and builds with gold,
- 20:01silver, and precious stones, and you participate
- 20:03as a worker, as a collaborator in helping to
- 20:07lay the stonework of the building, is it gold,
- 20:10silver, and precious stones? Or is it wood, hay,
- 20:14and straw? Is it really worthless service and
- 20:18worthless work? That's what he's talking about
- 20:21here. This is really about building the church,
- 20:24not building my little ministry. Are we partnering
- 20:28with God, doing what he's commanded us to do,
- 20:31building what he's commanded us to build, and
- 20:35one day he will come and establish his kingdom
- 20:39forever, for the day will disclose it. That day
- 20:42we will know who did the work because it will
- 20:47be revealed by fire. That word fire there means
- 20:50judgment, wrath. It's cleansing, purification.
- 20:55The fire will test, there it is, what sort of
- 20:58work one has done. If the work that anyone has
- 21:03built on the foundation survives. Do you hear
- 21:07that? Work. is building, built on the foundation
- 21:11that already exists, survives. He will receive
- 21:14a reward. If anyone's work is burned up, he will
- 21:18suffer loss, though he himself will be saved,
- 21:21but only as through the fire. What is the foundation?
- 21:24The foundation is Jesus Christ. Concerning what?
- 21:27The temple of God, the church. So what's our
- 21:30responsibility? Build the church. Do you not
- 21:33know that you are God's temple? That God's spirit
- 21:38dwells in you, not only in you individually,
- 21:42but he dwells in you as a people. Isn't that
- 21:46important? God will destroy. If he destroys God's
- 21:49temple, God will destroy him for God's temple
- 21:52is holy. And you are that temple. Since all things
- 21:56concern God's people, we must. Become fools so
- 22:01that we may become wise. Wisdom is to be skilled
- 22:04in the ways of God. That's what true, real, biblical
- 22:07wisdom is. To be skilled in the ways of God.
- 22:11Ephesians 5, 15 through 17 say it this way. Look
- 22:14carefully then how you walk. Not as unwise, but
- 22:19as wise. Making the best use of the time because
- 22:22the days are evil. Therefore, do not be foolish,
- 22:26but understand what the will of the Lord is.
- 22:28What is God's will? His word is his will. His
- 22:31word. This is the will of God right here. If
- 22:35you want to know God's mind, it's in his word.
- 22:38If you want to know God's ways, it's his word.
- 22:41If you want to know what God thinks, it's his
- 22:43word. If you want to know what God commands,
- 22:46it's his word. So let no one deceive, verse 18
- 22:49through 23, let no one deceive himself. If anyone
- 22:53among you thinks that he is wise in this age,
- 22:56let him become a fool that he may become wise.
- 23:00If you think you're wise, if you think you know
- 23:04what it is to live in this world, please become
- 23:07foolish so that you can become wise and skilled
- 23:11in the ways of God. For the wisdom of this world
- 23:14is folly. Do you hear that? Let no one boast
- 23:30in men. Are we boasting in Christ? Are we boasting
- 23:33in men? That's a good question. Where's our hope?
- 23:38In Christ or in men? Who do we want to become
- 23:42like? Like Christ? Or like a man, I am a Christian.
- 23:47I am a believer. We are Christians. We are believers.
- 23:52We are not Charlie Kirk. We boast in Christ and
- 23:57Christ alone, not in men. For all things are
- 24:00yours. This word, this term literally means all
- 24:04things concern you. I want you to hear this.
- 24:08All things concern us. Why? Because all things
- 24:11concern the gospel. All things concern you, whether
- 24:15Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life
- 24:19or death or the present or the future. All things
- 24:23concern you. All are yours, it says here. This
- 24:26is not a dominion statement. This is a proclamation
- 24:29statement. All things concern you in whether
- 24:35it's Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or
- 24:37life or death or present or the future. All of
- 24:40it is concerning you, priest of gospel. Priest
- 24:44of gospel is what he's saying here. You are in
- 24:47Christ. You are Christ. You belong to Christ
- 24:49and he belongs to you. You are his temple. You
- 24:52are his people and he is our God. That's what
- 24:55this means. All things concern us because it
- 24:59concerns the gospel. And we are in Christ. What's
- 25:03interesting is I think they could have translated
- 25:05this a little bit better at the end where it
- 25:06says, Christ is God's, meaning God owns him.
- 25:09No, what I think really is said here, especially
- 25:13when you look at the original language, it says,
- 25:16if we are in Christ, Christ is God. All things
- 25:20concern you and you are in Christ and Christ
- 25:23is God, the ruler of all things. That's what
- 25:27this means. How do we know? Because it fits the
- 25:31context of everything that's been said here.
- 25:33So that's my challenge to you. So in closing,
- 25:37we must be truly spiritually mature in how we
- 25:42live among each other. That we must, as God's
- 25:46people, know that we are one in Christ and that
- 25:51all of God's people are valued in him. We must
- 25:54also... Understand the importance and the responsibility
- 25:57of how we are to work and care and guard for
- 26:00his church. That's what matters. And lastly,
- 26:04concerning all things, it is about the gospel
- 26:07because we are in Christ and he is our God. That's
- 26:12what all this means. It's like, why are you fighting
- 26:14over dumb and foolish things, Corinthians? You
- 26:18belong to Christ and he is God. That's how he
- 26:20ends it there in chapter three. Father, I want
- 26:23to thank you so much for your goodness and faithfulness.
- 26:25Thank you, Lord, for your word. Thank you that
- 26:28your word is true, that you are the God of all
- 26:30creation, and that you have called us as your
- 26:32people to do the work, to be fellow workers,
- 26:35helpers with you in accomplishing your purpose
- 26:39and plan and in building your church and that
- 26:42the gates of hell will not ever prevail over
- 26:46her. We praise you and thank you for your faithfulness.
- 26:49In Jesus' name, amen.
