Sam: Hey there, welcome back to 7 Minute Books. I'm Sam, and today we're talking about a book that absolutely blew my mind: 'Prequel' by Rachel Maddow. Sophie, have you ever heard of the time a bunch of American businessmen tried to overthrow the government?
• 0:18
Sophie: Sam, that sounds like a movie plot. But yes, I've read 'Prequel,' and it's all true. Rachel Maddow digs up this almost unbelievable chapter of American history where a group of powerful people plotted a fascist coup. It's a wild ride.
• 0:35
Sam: Okay, so I need to start with the most shocking part. There was this plan in 1934 to march on Washington with a private army of half a million veterans. And they wanted to install a fascist dictator. I couldn't believe it.
• 0:50
Sophie: Right, that's the Business Plot. They approached a retired Marine general named Smedley Butler. He was a war hero, super popular. They offered him a ton of money to lead this coup against FDR.
• 1:03
Sam: And instead of taking the money, Butler goes straight to Congress and exposes the whole thing. That takes guts. I honestly don't know if I'd have that kind of integrity.
• 1:14
Sophie: He was a true patriot. But here's the thing, the plot was real, but it got buried. The press, owned by many of the same businessmen, downplayed it. Nobody was charged. It became a footnote.
• 1:28
Sam: So they just got away with it? That's insane. And Maddow argues that this emboldened them. They didn't stop. They just changed tactics.
• 1:37
Sophie: Exactly. They moved from a military coup to a cultural one. They poured money into a massive propaganda machine. They bought radio stations, newspapers, magazines. They created this whole parallel media ecosystem.
• 1:52
Sam: And the goal was to convince Americans that the real threat wasn't Hitler, but FDR and this so-called 'Jewish conspiracy.' It's sickening how familiar that sounds today.
• 2:02
Sophie: That's the core of the book. Maddow shows how the same playbook is used now. Exploit fear, attack the media, frame the fight as 'real people' versus a corrupt elite.
• 2:14
Sam: Let's talk about the characters, because they're straight out of a noir film. There's Gerald Nye, this former senator who was a master of rhetoric. He made anti-Semitism sound patriotic.
• 2:26
Sophie: He was a populist who blamed Eastern elites for dragging America into World War One. Then he pivoted into defending Nazi Germany. It's a slippery slope.
• 2:36
Sam: Then there's William Dudley Pelley, the Hollywood screenwriter who claimed he died and went to heaven. He came back with a divine mission to save America from Jews. He started the Silver Shirts, a paramilitary group.
• 2:50
Sophie: He was the most overtly violent and anti-Semitic. But the most intellectual fascist was Lawrence Dennis, a former diplomat who wrote books arguing democracy was a failed experiment. He wanted a corporate state run by businessmen.
• 3:06
Sam: And they were all connected by guys like George Deatherage, who tried to unite all these hate groups into one movement. It's terrifying how organized they were.
• 3:16
Sophie: But the book also has a hero. A young U.S. Attorney named William Power Maloney. He followed the money and used the Foreign Agents Registration Act to force them to register as foreign agents.
• 3:29
Sam: He subpoenaed bank records, tracked meetings, built a case piece by piece. And he eventually brought them to trial in the early 1940s. It was a spectacle.
• 3:39
Sophie: The trials exposed the conspiracy, and public opinion shifted. But many of the big financiers escaped prosecution. They used their wealth to bury the evidence and discredit Maloney.
• 3:51
Sam: So it was a partial victory. But Maddow's point is that it was still a victory. The plot failed because of a few courageous people, and that shows democracy can work.
• 4:02
Sophie: But it requires vigilance. The fight is never over. That's the warning of the book.
• 4:08
Sam: For me, the takeaway is that the biggest threat to American freedom has often come from within. It's not always foreign enemies. And the rhetoric from the 1930s sounds like it could be from today's headlines.
• 4:21

Sophie: In the end, 'Prequel' reminds us that the past is never really past. It's a warning, but also a testament to the courage of those who stood up. We'll see you in the next one.
