- 0:05Speaker 1: day before Thanksgiving. We're going to be reading through Second
- 0:08Speaker 1: Chronicles ten today and discussing King Solomon's son who takes
- 0:13Speaker 1: over the throne and immediately causes civil war, but then,
- 0:19Speaker 1: like I don't know, three days after he takes the throne,
- 0:21Speaker 1: so it's not really good stuff. We will get into
- 0:23Speaker 1: that topic in just a moment, all right, just a
- 0:32Speaker 1: little bit of past keeping for you guys before we
- 0:35Speaker 1: begin today's episode. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving and I will not
- 0:39Speaker 1: be doing an episode, but Friday there will be an
- 0:42Speaker 1: episode as normal for all of you Faithful members. So
- 0:46Speaker 1: I hope tomorrow that you have a very happy Thanksgiving
- 0:48Speaker 1: and contact me and tell me what you are doing
- 0:52Speaker 1: for Thanksgiving. I'd love to hear about that. But also
- 0:55Speaker 1: next week, I'm going to be taking a short sabbatical,
- 0:59Speaker 1: so I'll be taking off December fourth, which is a Thursday,
- 1:02Speaker 1: all the way to the following Wednesday from the podcast.
- 1:07Speaker 1: There also won't be a Friday episode next week for
- 1:10Speaker 1: you members, and the reason being is because I haven't
- 1:13Speaker 1: taken time off in quite a while unless I was
- 1:16Speaker 1: like sick. So I'm going to be taking a few
- 1:19Speaker 1: days off next week from the podcast, just to let
- 1:23Speaker 1: all of you guys know about that. So thank you
- 1:26Speaker 1: for being an awesome audience and for giving me some
- 1:29Speaker 1: time off. I greatly do appreciate it. Before today, let's
- 1:33Speaker 1: go ahead and read it Second Chronicles ten one through nineteen.
- 1:37Speaker 1: This is the entire chapter we're going to talk about
- 1:39Speaker 1: the rain of Raya Boam and also the well the
- 1:43Speaker 1: starting rain of Jeroboam as well. Now, you guys are
- 1:46Speaker 1: gonna have to get used to those two names, okay.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Rao Baham and Jeroboum. I know they're very similar, but
- 1:51Speaker 1: it is important to differentiate them. Raya Boam is Solomon's
- 1:55Speaker 1: sun and Jeroboam is the He's the future king of
- 2:01Speaker 1: the northern tribes of Israel. Okay, So that is what
- 2:04Speaker 1: we're going to have to remember going forward into Second Chronicles.
- 2:08Speaker 1: So let's read Second Chronicles ten the entire thing. I'll
- 2:11Speaker 1: be reading as usual from the web, Rao Baum went
- 2:16Speaker 1: to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to
- 2:18Speaker 1: make him the king. When Jereboam, the son of Abat,
- 2:21Speaker 1: heard of it, for he was in Egypt, where he
- 2:24Speaker 1: had fled from the presence of King Solomon. Jeroboam returned
- 2:27Speaker 1: out of Egypt, they sent and called him, and Jeroboam
- 2:30Speaker 1: and all Israel came, and they spoke to Raaboam, saying,
- 2:33Speaker 1: your father made our yoke grievous. Now therefore make the
- 2:37Speaker 1: grievous service of your father and his heavy yoke which
- 2:40Speaker 1: he put upon us later, and we will serve you.
- 2:43Speaker 1: He said to them, come again to me after three days,
- 2:46Speaker 1: so the people departed. King Raaboam took council with the
- 2:50Speaker 1: old men who had stood before Solomon, his father while
- 2:52Speaker 1: he yet lived, saying, what council do you give me
- 2:55Speaker 1: about how to answer these people? They spoke to him, saying,
- 2:58Speaker 1: if you are kind to these people, if you please
- 3:00Speaker 1: them and speak good words to them, then they will
- 3:03Speaker 1: be your servants forever. But he abandoned the council of
- 3:06Speaker 1: the old men which they had given him, and took
- 3:08Speaker 1: counsel with the young men who had grown up with him,
- 3:10Speaker 1: who stood before him. He said to them, what council
- 3:13Speaker 1: do you give that we may give an answer to
- 3:15Speaker 1: these people who have spoken to me, saying, make the
- 3:17Speaker 1: yoke that your father put on us lighter. The young
- 3:20Speaker 1: men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying,
- 3:23Speaker 1: thus you shall tell the people who spoke to you, saying,
- 3:25Speaker 1: your father made our yoke heavy, but make it lighter
- 3:28Speaker 1: on us. Thus you shall say to them, my little
- 3:30Speaker 1: finger is thicker than my father's waist. Now, whereas my
- 3:34Speaker 1: father burdened you with a heavy yoke, I will add
- 3:36Speaker 1: to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but
- 3:40Speaker 1: I will chastise you with scorpions. So Jeroboam and all
- 3:43Speaker 1: the people came to Raaboam the third day, as the
- 3:45Speaker 1: king had asked, saying, come to me again the third day.
- 3:48Speaker 1: And the king answered them roughly. And King Raabouam abandoned
- 3:51Speaker 1: the council of the old men and spoke to them
- 3:54Speaker 1: after the council of the young men, saying, my father
- 3:57Speaker 1: made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
- 4:03Speaker 1: So the king didn't listen to the people. For it
- 4:06Speaker 1: was brought about by God that Yahweh might establish his word,
- 4:09Speaker 1: which he spoke by a Hijah the Shylnite to Jerebohm
- 4:12Speaker 1: the Sun and Abat. When all Israel saw that the
- 4:15Speaker 1: king didn't listen to him, the people answered the king, saying,
- 4:18Speaker 1: what portion do we have in David. We don't have
- 4:20Speaker 1: an inheritance in the son of Jesse. Every man, to
- 4:23Speaker 1: your tense, Israel, Now see to your own house, David.
- 4:26Speaker 1: So all Israel departed to their tents. But as for
- 4:29Speaker 1: the children of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah,
- 4:31Speaker 1: Raaboam reigned over them. Then King Raaboam sent Hatteram, who
- 4:35Speaker 1: was over the men subject to forced labor, and the
- 4:38Speaker 1: children of Israel stoned him to death with stones. King
- 4:41Speaker 1: Raaboam hurried to get himself up to his chariot to
- 4:44Speaker 1: fleet Jerusalem. So Israel rebelled against David's house to this day.
- 4:50Speaker 1: You'll remember in the last chapter that King Solomon died.
- 4:54Speaker 1: He died after a very long and very successful reign.
- 4:57Speaker 1: He made Israel extremely wealthy. But there are some problems
- 5:01Speaker 1: beginning to form in Israel, and that is laid out
- 5:05Speaker 1: in this chapter we read today. So after Solomon died,
- 5:09Speaker 1: his son Raa Boam took the throne. And what's really
- 5:11Speaker 1: funny about Rae Boham is the fact that he's the
- 5:14Speaker 1: only son mentioned that Solomon had. Even though Solomon had
- 5:19Speaker 1: like a thousand wives and concubines and probably had hundreds
- 5:24Speaker 1: of children, Raaboam is the only son mentioned. I have
- 5:27Speaker 1: no clue how ree Boham was chosen out of all
- 5:31Speaker 1: of Solomon's probably hundreds of children to become the next king.
- 5:35Speaker 1: But ree Boham was the guy for the task. So
- 5:38Speaker 1: Rae Boam, he says in verse one, goes to Shechem,
- 5:42Speaker 1: for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him
- 5:44Speaker 1: the king. Now it's really bizarre about that, is Shechem
- 5:47Speaker 1: was actually on the northern part of Israel, and most
- 5:50Speaker 1: of the times the kings would get anointed in the
- 5:52Speaker 1: capital city of Jerusalem. So it's pretty clear that Israel
- 5:57Speaker 1: was already falling into some problems for Raa Boam to
- 6:01Speaker 1: have to leave Jerusalem to go up north in order
- 6:05Speaker 1: to establish his kingdom there, and that shows that the
- 6:09Speaker 1: northern parts of Israel were getting increasingly frustrated with Solomon's line,
- 6:15Speaker 1: with David's line. Rather, so Rea Boham goes up to
- 6:18Speaker 1: Shechem because all Israel had come to Shecham to make
- 6:21Speaker 1: him the king. And then it mentions here in verse two,
- 6:24Speaker 1: this guy named Jeroboam. Now you might remember Jeroboam. We
- 6:28Speaker 1: talked about him in a lot of depth actually when
- 6:31Speaker 1: we went through the Kings, because Jeroboam was the guy
- 6:35Speaker 1: who was going to eventually become the king of the
- 6:38Speaker 1: northern parts of Israel, and so Jereboam caused Solomon actually
- 6:44Speaker 1: a lot of problems, as you find out in First
- 6:47Speaker 1: Kings eleven. So let's read about that, because in First
- 6:50Speaker 1: Kings eleven, this entire chapter goes into Solomon's problems. Let's
- 6:56Speaker 1: say his idol worship, the amount of women he had
- 7:00Speaker 1: in his life that caused him to go astray, and
- 7:05Speaker 1: you know, worship all of these other false idols, including Molik,
- 7:08Speaker 1: who was one of the child's sacrifice idols. And Solomon
- 7:13Speaker 1: did it. He worshiped these disgusting idols. And God got
- 7:16Speaker 1: very angry about this because he had told Solomon, like
- 7:18Speaker 1: appeared to Solomon two times and gave him a warning.
- 7:23Speaker 1: So three separate occasions, God told Solomon, don't worship other gods.
- 7:29Speaker 1: If you just follow after me your entire life, everything's
- 7:31Speaker 1: going to go so well for you. Your children will
- 7:35Speaker 1: maintain the throne of Israel forever if you just do
- 7:38Speaker 1: what I tell you to do if you just worship
- 7:40Speaker 1: me like David your father did. And yet Solomon, in
- 7:44Speaker 1: spite of God's three warnings to him, did not do this.
- 7:48Speaker 1: In the end of his life, he straightway from God.
- 7:52Speaker 1: And of course God knew that this was going to happen,
- 7:54Speaker 1: hence why he tried to warn Solomon of this earlier on,
- 7:58Speaker 1: but Solomon did not listen. So God raises up this
- 8:01Speaker 1: man named Jereboam to be an adversary to Solomon, and
- 8:08Speaker 1: this was part of Solomon's punishment. Of course, so let's
- 8:10Speaker 1: read it first Kings eleven, starting in verse twenty six,
- 8:13Speaker 1: and read about the rise of Jeroboam. It says Jereboam,
- 8:17Speaker 1: the son of Nebat and Ephriamite of Zareda, a servant
- 8:21Speaker 1: of Solomon whose mother's name was Zeruiah, a widow, also
- 8:25Speaker 1: lifted up his hand against the king. This was the
- 8:28Speaker 1: reason why he lifted up his hand against King Solomon.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Solomon built Milo and repaired the breach of his father
- 8:34Speaker 1: David's city. The man Jereboam was a mighty man of valor,
- 8:38Speaker 1: and Solomon saw the young man that he was industrious,
- 8:41Speaker 1: and he put him in charge of all the labor
- 8:43Speaker 1: of the House of Joseph. At that time, when Jereboam
- 8:45Speaker 1: went out of Jerusalem, the prophet of Hijah the Shylannite
- 8:48Speaker 1: found him on the way. Now, Ahijah had clad himself
- 8:52Speaker 1: with a new garment, and the two of them were
- 8:54Speaker 1: alone in the field. Ahijah took the new garment that
- 8:57Speaker 1: was on him and tore it into twelve pieces. He
- 9:00Speaker 1: said to Jereboam, take ten pieces, for Yahweh, the God
- 9:03Speaker 1: of Israel, says, behold, I will tear the kingdom out
- 9:06Speaker 1: of the hand of Solomon and will give you ten tribes.
- 9:09Speaker 1: But he shall have one tribe for my servant, David's sake,
- 9:12Speaker 1: and for Jerusalem's sake, the city which I have chosen
- 9:14Speaker 1: out of all of the tribes of Israel. Because they
- 9:16Speaker 1: have forsaken me and have worshiped Ashtarith, the goddess of
- 9:19Speaker 1: the Sidonians, Chemish, the God of Moab, and Milcom, the
- 9:23Speaker 1: God of the children of Ammon. They have not walked
- 9:25Speaker 1: in my ways to do that which is right in
- 9:27Speaker 1: my eyes, and to keep my statutes and my ordinances,
- 9:30Speaker 1: as David his father did. However, I will not take
- 9:33Speaker 1: the whole kingdom out of his hand. But I will
- 9:35Speaker 1: make him prince all the days of his life for David,
- 9:38Speaker 1: my servant's sake, whom I chose, who kept my commandments
- 9:41Speaker 1: and my statutes. But I will take the kingdom out
- 9:44Speaker 1: of his son's hand and give it to you, even
- 9:46Speaker 1: ten tribes. I will give one tribe to his son,
- 9:50Speaker 1: that David my servant may have a lump always before
- 9:52Speaker 1: me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen for
- 9:55Speaker 1: myself to put my name there. I will take you,
- 9:58Speaker 1: and you shall reign according to all the your soul desires,
- 10:01Speaker 1: and shall be king over Israel. It shall be if
- 10:03Speaker 1: you will listen to all that I command you, and
- 10:05Speaker 1: will walk in my ways and do that which is
- 10:07Speaker 1: right in my eyes, to keep my statutes and my commandments,
- 10:10Speaker 1: as David my servant did that. I will be with you,
- 10:13Speaker 1: and will build you a sure house as I built
- 10:15Speaker 1: for David, and will give Israel to you. I will
- 10:18Speaker 1: afflict the offspring of David for this, but not forever. Therefore,
- 10:22Speaker 1: Solomon sought to kill Jeroboam, but Jeroboam arose and fled
- 10:26Speaker 1: into Egypt to Shishak, the King of Egypt, and was
- 10:30Speaker 1: in Egypt until the death of Solomon. So that is
- 10:33Speaker 1: clear that this guy Jeroboam started becoming very popular with
- 10:37Speaker 1: the people. In fact, Solomon saw that Jereboam was an
- 10:40Speaker 1: industrious young man, is what it says. So he was
- 10:42Speaker 1: a hard worker, he was strong. It says, he was valiant,
- 10:46Speaker 1: which means very courageous. And so Solomon actually set him
- 10:50Speaker 1: over the workforce of the entire tribe of Joseph, which
- 10:53Speaker 1: would have been the half tribes of Manassa and also Ephrium.
- 10:58Speaker 1: So those were the two tribes of ji Jo, and
- 11:00Speaker 1: Jereboam was over all of them. And then this prophet
- 11:05Speaker 1: named a Hijah goes to Jerobom and is like, hey,
- 11:09Speaker 1: God is going to give you ten tribes of Israel
- 11:13Speaker 1: and leave one tribe to Solomon's line because of the
- 11:17Speaker 1: sake of my servant David. Which is interesting because you know,
- 11:21Speaker 1: David had died already. So this absolutely shows that there
- 11:24Speaker 1: is life after death because God is still considering David
- 11:27Speaker 1: even though David had already died, Like there would be
- 11:31Speaker 1: no reason for God to consider David if there was
- 11:33Speaker 1: no life after death, because David's life had ended, it
- 11:36Speaker 1: didn't matter anymore. If God had continued on his promise
- 11:42Speaker 1: with David or not. So this shows that there is
- 11:44Speaker 1: life after death, which is interesting. But regardless, God says
- 11:47Speaker 1: he's going to give ten of the tribes to Jerobom
- 11:51Speaker 1: and rip them out of the line of David, but
- 11:54Speaker 1: he will give one tribe to David's line. Now you
- 11:59Speaker 1: might be like, well, wait a second, there's twelve tribes
- 12:01Speaker 1: in Israel, where'd the other tribe go. Well, technically, the
- 12:05Speaker 1: tribe of Simeon and Judah kind of merged into one tribe,
- 12:10Speaker 1: and Benjamin sorta did later on as well. So God
- 12:13Speaker 1: gave that giant tribe of Judah, Simeon, and part of
- 12:18Speaker 1: Benjamin to raye Boam, to Solomon's son, and then Jereboam
- 12:25Speaker 1: got the northern tribes of Israel, which would have been
- 12:28Speaker 1: the other ten tribes. So that would have been the
- 12:30Speaker 1: tribe of Joseph, which was Eprium, and Manassa, the tribe
- 12:34Speaker 1: of Dan Neftali, Zebulen, all of those up north. And
- 12:38Speaker 1: God specifically did this to Judge Solomon. But right after
- 12:42Speaker 1: Jeroboam hears of this prophecy that he's going to become
- 12:46Speaker 1: the next king. Historians actually say that Jeroboam rose up
- 12:51Speaker 1: against Solomon and tried to make Solomon look really bad
- 12:56Speaker 1: and tried to gain power for himself, and that was
- 12:58Speaker 1: why Solomon ended up trying to kill Jeroboam. So Jeroboam
- 13:03Speaker 1: fled to Egypt until Solomon had died. And so now
- 13:06Speaker 1: that Solomon is dead, Jeroboam returns home. And you can
- 13:10Speaker 1: see how popular he is, because if you go back
- 13:12Speaker 1: to our passage for today, in second Chronicles ten, it
- 13:16Speaker 1: says in verse two, when Jerebom, the son of Nebat,
- 13:19Speaker 1: heard of it, for he was in Egypt, where he
- 13:21Speaker 1: had fled from the presence of King Solomon. Jeroboam returned
- 13:24Speaker 1: out of Egypt, and they sent and called him. That
- 13:27Speaker 1: would be the northern tribes of Israel sent and called
- 13:31Speaker 1: for Jeroboam. That means Jerobom had gained a lot of
- 13:35Speaker 1: power before Solomon had died. That the people, like all
- 13:39Speaker 1: the people, liked Jeroboam and called for him when they
- 13:44Speaker 1: found out he was back in Israel. And so Jeroboam
- 13:47Speaker 1: and Israel goes up to Shechem where rare Baoham was
- 13:50Speaker 1: about to be anointed king, and they say this to
- 13:53Speaker 1: him in verse four, your father made our yoke grievous.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Now therefore make the grievous serve of your father and
- 14:01Speaker 1: his heavy yoke which he put on us lighter and
- 14:03Speaker 1: we will serve you. So we've talked about this in
- 14:05Speaker 1: some depth before on the podcast. You know, Solomon was
- 14:09Speaker 1: a go getter. He was a workaholic for sure, and
- 14:12Speaker 1: he probably placed a lot of burdens on his people.
- 14:16Speaker 1: We do know that he had slave labor, though it
- 14:18Speaker 1: does say in scripture that he did not make Israelite
- 14:22Speaker 1: people his slaves, but they were still his servants. They
- 14:26Speaker 1: were still forced in a way to serve him, but
- 14:30Speaker 1: they would just get paid for it, if that makes sense.
- 14:34Speaker 1: And you know, Solomon, being such a go getter, probably
- 14:38Speaker 1: did not give his people a very good work life
- 14:42Speaker 1: balance and put these big burdens on their backs. And
- 14:47Speaker 1: the people were just getting so frustrated with this. And
- 14:49Speaker 1: don't forget who Jereboam is, and this is why he's
- 14:52Speaker 1: so popular, because he was the leader of the workforce
- 14:55Speaker 1: of the tribe of Joseph, and Jereboam probably used that
- 15:01Speaker 1: position to tell the people, you know, Solomon is so
- 15:05Speaker 1: terrible to you guys, like I'm sorry, your workforce is
- 15:08Speaker 1: so hard. I'm going to make it easier on you guys,
- 15:10Speaker 1: I'm going to do my best. So Jeroboam gained a
- 15:13Speaker 1: lot of respect with the tribe of Joseph specifically, which
- 15:17Speaker 1: was a very big tribe by the way. So Jeroboam
- 15:20Speaker 1: probably used his position to make Solomon look even worse,
- 15:26Speaker 1: which is why the people call Jerobom when they find
- 15:29Speaker 1: out he's back from Egypt. They call him to go
- 15:33Speaker 1: to Rayeboam, Solomon's son, and tell him, please make our
- 15:37Speaker 1: load lighter, and we will in fact serve you. So
- 15:41Speaker 1: Rae Boham listens to the speech that Jeroboam gives and
- 15:44Speaker 1: all the people of Israel, and he says to them
- 15:46Speaker 1: in verse five, come back to me after three days.
- 15:49Speaker 1: So in other words, let me think about this for
- 15:51Speaker 1: a few days, and I will give you my answer.
- 15:54Speaker 1: So the people listen and they depart. So King raya
- 15:56Speaker 1: Bom takes all the counselors, all the old men that
- 15:59Speaker 1: had served under Solomon, and he asks them for advice.
- 16:03Speaker 1: It says he asked them, what council do you give
- 16:06Speaker 1: me about how to answer these people. So they spoke
- 16:09Speaker 1: to him saying, if you are kind to these people,
- 16:12Speaker 1: if you please them and speak good words to them,
- 16:14Speaker 1: then they will be your servants forever. And this was
- 16:17Speaker 1: very sound advice. Obviously. You know, these people were very
- 16:20Speaker 1: frustrated over Solomon and over the lack of work life
- 16:26Speaker 1: balance that they had. That they were on the verge
- 16:31Speaker 1: of a civil war. And the old men understood this.
- 16:34Speaker 1: They saw what was happening throughout their lives. They had
- 16:37Speaker 1: good advice to give. Not to mention that we've already
- 16:42Speaker 1: seen some cracks forming in Israel even back in David's time.
- 16:47Speaker 1: You'll remember that even David at one point practically had
- 16:50Speaker 1: a civil war on his hands because the people couldn't
- 16:54Speaker 1: stand the fact that somebody from the tribe of Judah
- 16:59Speaker 1: was the king. They felt that the tribe of Judah
- 17:02Speaker 1: got all of the benefits, whereas all of the other
- 17:04Speaker 1: eleven tribes of Israel weren't getting those same benefits. So
- 17:08Speaker 1: even David was struggling with unity in Israel during his lifetime.
- 17:13Speaker 1: Now Solomon maybe a little bit less, but once again
- 17:17Speaker 1: those problems are beginning to come back, and Israel is
- 17:20Speaker 1: starting to fracture. The old men. The advisors see this
- 17:25Speaker 1: and they tell ree Bohm, you have to give them
- 17:28Speaker 1: what they want. They will serve you forever. Just be
- 17:32Speaker 1: kind to them and ease their burdens. But it says
- 17:36Speaker 1: in verse eight that Raa Bohm did not take their advice.
- 17:39Speaker 1: He did not like the advice from the old people.
- 17:42Speaker 1: He wanted advice from the hip, younger people. So he
- 17:45Speaker 1: asks his friends who had grown up with him, what
- 17:48Speaker 1: would you guys do in this situation? And so his
- 17:50Speaker 1: friends tell him, They're like, you tell them, I'm going
- 17:53Speaker 1: to be a dictator that if you think Solomon was
- 17:56Speaker 1: a hard king, i am going to make your burdens
- 17:58Speaker 1: so much harder. You are going to fear me. You
- 18:02Speaker 1: are going to listen to what I say. And Rea
- 18:05Speaker 1: Bohama was like, oh, yeah, that's a really really good idea.
- 18:07Speaker 1: That's what I'm gonna do. And so that is what
- 18:10Speaker 1: Raya Boam does. He says in verse twelve, Jeroboam and
- 18:15Speaker 1: all the people returned to Rae Boham on the third day,
- 18:19Speaker 1: as the king had asked, saying, come to me again
- 18:21Speaker 1: on the third day, And so the king answered them roughly.
- 18:25Speaker 1: The king abandoned the council of the old men and
- 18:29Speaker 1: spoke to them after the council of the young men, saying,
- 18:32Speaker 1: my father made your yokeevy, but I will add to it.
- 18:35Speaker 1: My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise
- 18:38Speaker 1: you with scorpions. And obviously the people were not very
- 18:43Speaker 1: happy about that. They did not like what Raya Boham said,
- 18:47Speaker 1: and so they're like, why are we even dealing with this?
- 18:50Speaker 1: Why are we dealing with a king from the tribe
- 18:53Speaker 1: of Judah. That's what they say. They said, Israel saw
- 18:58Speaker 1: that the king didn't listen to them in the peace,
- 19:00Speaker 1: answered the king, what portion do we have in David?
- 19:03Speaker 1: In other words, what portion do we have in the
- 19:05Speaker 1: tribe of Judah. We don't have an inheritance in the
- 19:08Speaker 1: son of Jesse. Every man to your tents, Israel. Now
- 19:11Speaker 1: see to your own house David. So all Israel departed
- 19:15Speaker 1: to their tents. So now civil war is on Rae
- 19:19Speaker 1: Boham's hands because he did not answer the people correctly.
- 19:23Speaker 1: He did not give the tribes what they needed. And
- 19:27Speaker 1: so they go back home and they say, we are
- 19:30Speaker 1: done with the line of David. We're going to get
- 19:33Speaker 1: our own king. And Raa Boham doesn't even realize how
- 19:38Speaker 1: much of a problem he has caused yet until this
- 19:42Speaker 1: is so ridiculous verse eighteen. Then King Raa Boam sent Hatteram,
- 19:46Speaker 1: who's over the men subject to forced labor, and the
- 19:50Speaker 1: children of Israel stoned him to death with stones. So
- 19:54Speaker 1: first Kings divulges that this guy Hatteram was the man
- 20:01Speaker 1: who oversaw all the forced labor, so he was in
- 20:04Speaker 1: charge of the slave labor under Solomon, and Raa Baouam
- 20:09Speaker 1: feels like it's a good idea to be like this
- 20:12Speaker 1: dictator who is going to make people fear him, so
- 20:17Speaker 1: he sends Hatteram out to collect taxes from all of
- 20:21Speaker 1: the people. And the Israelites were furious over this, absolutely
- 20:26Speaker 1: furious because they're like, this guy who's in charge of
- 20:29Speaker 1: the slave labor is now coming and demanding taxes from
- 20:34Speaker 1: us when we have this huge burden already placed on
- 20:38Speaker 1: our backs due to Solomon. And they stone Hatterum, and
- 20:43Speaker 1: you know, this was not the right response from Israel.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Israel rarely has the right response. They're always doing the
- 20:50Speaker 1: wrong thing. This wasn't Hatteram's fault. He just had a
- 20:53Speaker 1: job to do. And the people stone Hatterum and now
- 20:59Speaker 1: Raya Boham realize the trouble he has caused, and so
- 21:02Speaker 1: it says that king Raya Boam hurried to get himself
- 21:06Speaker 1: up to his chariot to flee back to Jerusalem. So
- 21:09Speaker 1: Israel rebelled against David's house to this day, is what
- 21:14Speaker 1: it says. So that is the start of the civil
- 21:16Speaker 1: war that occurs between the House of David, or the
- 21:21Speaker 1: tribe of Judah and the northern tribes of Israel. And
- 21:25Speaker 1: now two nations are born. The two nations are Israel
- 21:30Speaker 1: and Judah is what they are going to be called
- 21:32Speaker 1: in the future. Now, one thing I should mention is
- 21:35Speaker 1: that Chronicles is a little different from the Kings. The
- 21:39Speaker 1: books of the Kings focus a lot more on Israel,
- 21:43Speaker 1: and the Chronicles focus a lot more on the Kings
- 21:46Speaker 1: of Judah. So we're going to read almost nothing practically
- 21:50Speaker 1: about the northern tribes of Israel from this moment forward.
- 21:54Speaker 1: We'll read a little bit here and there, but generally
- 21:58Speaker 1: the Chronicles are going to focus on the Kings of
- 22:00Speaker 1: the South, the Judaean kings from here on out. And
- 22:04Speaker 1: that's cool because we didn't learn as much about them
- 22:06Speaker 1: in First and Second Kings, because, like I said, the
- 22:09Speaker 1: Kings focused on the Kings of Israel. So we're gonna
- 22:13Speaker 1: learn a lot more about the Judean kings and how
- 22:18Speaker 1: they fell into sin time and time again. Even though
- 22:22Speaker 1: Judah in general had a very solid start, they are
- 22:28Speaker 1: going to fall into sin even worse than Israel did
- 22:32Speaker 1: by the time Second Chronicles is finished. So faith listeners
- 22:38Speaker 1: don't forget that there will not be an episode tomorrow
- 22:41Speaker 1: on Thanksgiving, and that next week I will be taking
- 22:44Speaker 1: that short break from the podcast just to rest and relax.
- 22:49Speaker 1: I will be gone from next Thursday, the fourth until
- 22:52Speaker 1: the following Wednesday, and that includes for you members as well.
- 22:57Speaker 1: But for you members, of course, there will be an
- 22:59Speaker 1: episode this Friday over on the Bible Explained on Fridays,
- 23:02Speaker 1: So I hope to see all of you members over
- 23:03Speaker 1: there for a discussion from the Psalms. But for all
- 23:06Speaker 1: the rest of you Faithful listeners, have a fantastic and
- 23:09Speaker 1: wonderful and happy Thanksgiving. I'll see you guys Monday. Until then,
- 23:14Speaker 1: happy listening, happy Thanksgiving, and God bless you all.
