- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Genesis 26.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Isaac lies to Abimelech.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Now there was a famine.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: This was like the famine that happened during Abraham's life.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: So Isaac went to the town of Gerar to King Abimelech of the Philistines.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: The Lord spoke to Isaac and said, Don't go down to Egypt.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Live in the land that I commanded you to live in.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Stay in this land, and I will be with you.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: I will bless you.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: I will give you and your family all of these lands.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: I will do what I promised to Abraham your father.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: I will make your family as many as the stars of heaven, and I will give all these lands to your family.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Through your descendants, every nation on earth will be blessed.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: I will do this because your father Abraham obeyed my words and did what I said.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: He obeyed my commands and my laws and my rules.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: So Isaac settled in Gerar.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: His wife Rebekah was very beautiful.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: The men of that place asked Isaac about Rebekah.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: He said, She is my sister.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: He was afraid to tell them that Rebekah was his wife.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: He was afraid that the men would kill him so that they could have her.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: After Isaac had lived there a long time, Abimelech looked out of his window and saw Isaac and his wife enjoying one another.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Abimelech called for Isaac and said, This woman is your wife.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Why did you tell us that she was your sister?
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Isaac said to him, I was afraid that you would kill me so that you could have her.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Abimelech said, You have done a bad thing to us.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: One of our men might have sex with your wife, then he would be guilty of a great sin.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: So Abimelech gave a warning to all the people.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: He said, No one must hurt this man or this woman.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: If anyone hurts them, they will be killed.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Isaac becomes rich.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Isaac planted fields in that place, and that year he gathered a great harvest.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: The Lord blessed him very much.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Isaac became rich.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: He gathered more and more wealth until he became a very rich man.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: He had many flocks and herds of animals.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: He also had many slaves.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: All the Philistines were jealous of him, so they destroyed all of the wells that Isaac's father Abraham and his servants had dug many years before.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: They filled them with sand.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Abimelech said to Isaac, Leave our country.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: You have become much more powerful than we are.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: So Isaac left that place and camped near the little river of Garar.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: He stayed there and lived.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Long before this time, Abraham had dug many wells.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: After he died, the Philistines filled the wells with sand.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: So Isaac went back and dug those wells again.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: He gave them the same names his father had given them.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: Isaac's servants also dug a well near the little river and found fresh water.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: But the men who herded sheep in the valley of Gar argued with Isaac's servants.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: They said this water is ours.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: So Isaac named that well Esak.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: He gave it that name because it was the place where they had argued with him.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: Then Isaac's servants dug another well, but there was an argument over this well too.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: So Isaac named that well Sitna.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Isaac moved from there and dug another well.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: No one came to argue about this well, so Isaac named it Rehob.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: He said, Now the Lord has found a place for us.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: We will grow and be successful in this place.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: From there Isaac went to Beersheba.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: The Lord spoke to him that night and said, I am the God of your father Abraham, don't be afraid.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: I am with you and I will bless you.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: I will make your family great.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: I will do this because of my servant Abraham.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: So Isaac built an altar and worshipped the Lord in that place.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: He set up camp there and his servants dug a well.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Abimelech came from Garar to see Isaac.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: He brought with him Ahusath, his advisor, and Fekal, the commander of his army.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Isaac asked, Why have you come to see me?
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: You were not friendly to me before.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: You even forced me to leave your country.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: They answered, Now we know that the Lord is with you.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: We think that we should make an agreement.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: We want you to make a promise to us.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: We did not hurt you.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Now you should promise not to hurt us.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: We sent you away, but we sent you away in peace.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: Now it is clear that the Lord has blessed you.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: So Isaac gave a party for them.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: They all ate and drank.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Early the next morning each man made a promise and a vow.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Then the men left in peace.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: On that day Isaac's servants came about and told him about the well they had dug.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: The servants said We found water in that well.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: So Isaac named it Sheba.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: And that city is still called Beersheba.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Esau's wives.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: When Esau was forty years old, he married two Hittite women.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: One was Judith, the daughter of Beril, and the other was Bassimuth, the daughter of Elon.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: These marriages made Isaac and Rebecca very unhappy.
