- 0:00Cara, actually have a fun fact for you.
- 0:01Did you know that the average adult makes around 35,000
- 0:06conscious decisions every day? Wow, Oh my goodness.
- 0:10Welcome to Unspoken Career Truths.
- 0:12I'm Lauren Levac Gilbert. And I'm Cara Wood.
- 0:16And we're here to be the coworkers you can trust.
- 0:19In just 10 minutes, we'll cover the strategies you need, the
- 0:22mistakes to avoid, and the insider secrets no one tells you
- 0:26so you can show up with confidence at work.
- 0:29What's the type of decision that you stress over most?
- 0:34I'd have to say one that seems to be permanent, like something
- 0:38like a move or like buying a house, something that you just
- 0:42can't like take back after you do it and kind of have to sit in
- 0:46for a bit. Those are the ones that really
- 0:47stress me out the most. And we're trying to buy a house,
- 0:49so, you know, here we are. Oh, yeah.
- 0:51And it's wise, actually. That is something that I feel
- 0:54like we want to talk about today is like, what is the scale of
- 0:57decision? And I'm also sort of jealous
- 0:58because the thing that I freeze up over the most sometimes is
- 1:02literally what to have for lunch or dinner where I'm like, oh, I
- 1:06need to just, like, think about this.
- 1:07And then I have to remind myself that it's not permanent.
- 1:10There's lunch tomorrow as well. Is this one of those things
- 1:13where I can make your lunch decisions and you can make my
- 1:15big decisions, Carlos? There we go.
- 1:18Yes, yes, and. We're on the solution.
- 1:22We're going to talk about all the kinds of decisions today.
- 1:24Decision making is one of those things that we like, do every
- 1:27day, and we do it at large scales and the small scales.
- 1:30So I feel like 2 questions you just need to ask yourself when
- 1:32you're stuck on a decision is like 1.
- 1:35How many other people do you need buy in?
- 1:37So like you need buy in from your husband, you guys both have
- 1:40to like the house you might want.
- 1:41To my dog. Come on now, Cara.
- 1:44Your dog has needs. Everyone needs to buy in, you
- 1:47know, Or is it just your when? It's just your choice to make.
- 1:50And then how long of an impact? So exactly what you were
- 1:53thinking of, like, does this thing feel undoable?
- 1:57Or is this like a permanent kind of thing?
- 1:59And the amount of time that your decision effects you should
- 2:02actually just correlate directly with how much time you spend on
- 2:04it. So you're right to worry about
- 2:06the big decisions. Best advice I ever got, and I
- 2:09got this when I was younger, Don't make big decisions at
- 2:11highs or lows. So like if you're like super
- 2:14happy and you're having like the best time and the best day, not
- 2:17a day to make a decision. If you're like super low and
- 2:20super sad and just not in a good place, also not a great day to
- 2:23make a decision, right? Because your emotions can kind
- 2:26of like swing you in either way. So it's great to kind of give
- 2:29yourself space around those emotions.
- 2:32So you're making a decision that truly is for you and not
- 2:35reflective of that kind of higher low moment.
- 2:38Yeah. And what's your advice for
- 2:39someone that, like is going through that?
- 2:41Is it that depending on the decision, just either let it
- 2:45hold if it's like a big decision or outsource it and have Lauren
- 2:48tell you what to eat for lunch, I mean.
- 2:51Totally an option, but I would say just like recognize, like
- 2:56and know, hey, I'm making this big decision, but I don't think
- 2:59I'm in the right mindset and try to identify like what can get
- 3:02you in the right mindset. So like for me, if I'm trying to
- 3:05make a decision, but I'm like just really stuck in either like
- 3:09the excitement of it and I can't get to the actual like area.
- 3:12I do something that gets me out of my head.
- 3:14So like I'll go take a dance class or I'll go take a walk and
- 3:17I'll do something like physical that's getting me out of my
- 3:20head. That's what I do.
- 3:22That is really helpful, but you just have to find your thing.
- 3:24Well, and This is why we're having this conversation is
- 3:26because there's so many different kinds of frameworks
- 3:29or, like, tools you can use. And you taught me one that was
- 3:33never on my radar. And I'd love for you to, like,
- 3:36share it on this podcast. Yeah.
- 3:38So I'm a big gut instinct person.
- 3:41So I'm someone who like, if it feels right, like that's more
- 3:45important to me than maybe a logical decision.
- 3:48So I always trust my gut. And I think it takes time to
- 3:51really kind of hone in on your gut and like get in tune with
- 3:54it. But but there's also this like
- 3:56really cool thing that your body knows before your mind does.
- 4:00I actually learned this from Gabrielle Bernstein.
- 4:03She has written a bunch of books.
- 4:05One of my favorites is The Universe Has Your Back.
- 4:07And there's this trick. We actually take your, I think.
- 4:11Is it your pinky on your thumb or your?
- 4:13It's your index. Finger your index finger on your
- 4:16thumb and you like basically interlock them like a chain and
- 4:21you ask yourself a question. You try to pull them apart and
- 4:25your muscles will actually know the true answer to the question
- 4:28versus like what you think in your head.
- 4:30I know it sounds really crazy but try it like.
- 4:33I thought it was crazy until I tried it.
- 4:35So now we're telling everyone to try it.
- 4:38My kind of go to framework, especially when it is something
- 4:42that, yeah, I'm stressed out about it, but it might not be
- 4:44like the decision that really deserves a ton of my time or I'm
- 4:48like, I have to cap kind of how long I think about this.
- 4:50The best way, the quickest way that I can get to a decision I'm
- 4:53comfortable with is to just forecast and think about both
- 4:56outcomes or all the outcomes. So like, if I buy this house, do
- 5:00I not buy this house if I take this job?
- 5:01If I not take this job and I all I do is just imagine the future
- 5:05in both cases. And I can feel similar to you,
- 5:07like, OK, let my body like tell me which one I regret.
- 5:11Because you can kind of play it out in your mind.
- 5:13And I think that's sometimes why decisions are so tough is
- 5:15because you can sort of play it out in your mind and then you're
- 5:17like, well, which thing? And you think about the worst
- 5:20outcome of I was. Just going to say.
- 5:22Yeah. So think of the worst outcome of
- 5:24both paths that you take, and then which one fills you with
- 5:28the deepest regret. I'm also a really big fan of the
- 5:30pro con list, but you know, I'm like, I'm a huge list gal.
- 5:34So just like really trying to list out the pros and cons.
- 5:37And for me, I like to talk to a lot of people.
- 5:41But what's really important about that, especially when
- 5:44making a pro con list is you need to understand where people
- 5:46are coming from. So you got to just take it with
- 5:49a grain of salt, right? Like their opinions are coming
- 5:53from a place of their understanding and their needs
- 5:55and their wants. So just take them as inputs, not
- 5:58necessarily as gospel. That's where it's so important
- 6:01to know who else you're the making the decision with because
- 6:04when you're at work and you're making a decision like it's
- 6:06going to have impact for your whole team.
- 6:08But there are times when, for example, if you're picking
- 6:11seating, you might not ask your whole team where they want to
- 6:13sit, but you might factor in like people's opinions or you
- 6:18might, you know, for projects, same thing.
- 6:20It's like, I want to get the opinion of the other people in
- 6:23the room that have the expertise and it's affecting everyone.
- 6:26And then there are times when you can't avoid like we all
- 6:28know, we actually have to come to an agreement together.
- 6:31And so we have to gather everybody's data.
- 6:34And then to your point, like people are going to be coming
- 6:36from a different place. I actually, I take a different,
- 6:39I take a similar approach, pro and calmness, but I love math.
- 6:42So I write out like almost an algorithm of like weighted
- 6:46issues. So I'll say like I'll either
- 6:48weight them on a scale of 1 to 10 or I'll just say like what
- 6:52things in this decision matter most?
- 6:54So it might be I'm trying to again, I'll take we keep talking
- 6:58about the house. So like when I it's a good one
- 7:00goes where my house was like what mattered to me was like
- 7:03climate, the kitchen space commute.
- 7:07And when I say climate, I mean like I wanted it to be safe for
- 7:11climate change and like anticipate ahead of that.
- 7:15And I also wanted to be in a neighborhood that was growing in
- 7:18value. And so I had I when I first went
- 7:21to the land, my realtor, she was like, I listed so many different
- 7:25neighborhoods, but then there were places I would refuse to
- 7:27see in those neighborhoods because they didn't still fit my
- 7:30criteria of nice kitchen or, you know, high enough above ground
- 7:34or like a good, good land. So anyway, but those things,
- 7:39those factors mattered more than square footage, for example,
- 7:43which for someone else would be like huge important thing.
- 7:46I, you know, it's funny, I got married a couple years ago and I
- 7:49think that was another big thing.
- 7:51Like when we were making decisions, it was like, well,
- 7:53what are the things that are like non negotiables and
- 7:55everything else really doesn't matter because decision fatigue
- 7:58is real, right? And so you need to be very
- 8:01conscious about like, what's really important and what really
- 8:04doesn't matter. Totally, totally.
- 8:07And I'll just say one more, another decision making
- 8:10framework that I really love is one that I think comes from
- 8:14Pixar, where essentially you take an idea and then you look
- 8:18at it from a few different lenses.
- 8:20So again, it's like attach the pessimist view, attach the
- 8:22optimist view. What if everything was possible?
- 8:25What if nothing was possible? And it works really well in a
- 8:27group setting because you can, you can state those rules and
- 8:31lenses that you're going to look at a problem through and then
- 8:33take the group through them one at a time so that you're like,
- 8:36all right, for now, we're only going to talk about if
- 8:38everything worked out perfectly, why would this be a good or bad
- 8:42decision? And walk everyone through that.
- 8:44Everyone's optimistic in the room, it's supportive.
- 8:46And then it's like, OK, we've done that exercise now let's
- 8:48pick it apart, you know? And so like, it's a really great
- 8:51way, especially if you need to like work a group through a lot
- 8:53of decisions and you hear the issues that are coming up and
- 8:56being repeated. And it gives people like the
- 8:58freedom to kind of bring it up because sometimes in a group
- 9:01setting, the power dynamic is also going to impact who's going
- 9:04to say what and be comfortable with saying, wait, this is non
- 9:07negotiable for me, even if no one else agrees that it is.
- 9:10Like gives me some inside out vibes of that movie where you're
- 9:13like putting your different hats on for different emotions and
- 9:15stuff. I really like that.
- 9:16I haven't heard of that one. Yeah, it's really, I, I heard
- 9:20about it and it's, it's used a lot in like creative spaces
- 9:23where you just want to like, again, every creative idea
- 9:27sometimes just needs time and like support.
- 9:29And then also, but you can't make every movie.
- 9:32And so I think that's another way reason that it's used often.
- 9:36Yeah. So just to kind of recap, I
- 9:38mean, when you're making big decisions or any decision, use
- 9:41your time wisely and in proportion with actually how
- 9:44long the decision's gonna impact your life and recognize whether
- 9:48or not you're taking others along in the journey.
- 9:51Or if you, you know, need to scope this problem and really
- 9:55look at the options and bring everyone on board.
- 9:58And then, you know, pick the pick the method A that works and
- 10:02resonates with what you value, but also that matches that
- 10:05moment. And sometimes it's also kind of
- 10:07fun to like, especially when you kind of think, I think I know
- 10:10this answer, but I'm still a little nervous.
- 10:12Like try a few frameworks and if you keep getting the same
- 10:14result, I think that's telling you something as well.
- 10:17And that's a wrap. Thanks for joining us on
