- 0:00Speaker 1: Are our climate targets getting in the way of our productivity?
- 0:02Speaker 1: Both act in New Zealand first have pledged to pull
- 0:04Speaker 1: out of the Paris Accords on their serious changes are made.
- 0:07Speaker 1: They say this is to stop putting pressure on farmers.
- 0:09Speaker 1: So how do farmers feel about this move? Wayne Langford
- 0:14Speaker 1: is Fed Farmers National President and joins me, Now go
- 0:16Speaker 1: on into your Wayne morning Andrek, what do you reckon?
- 0:20Speaker 2: I mean, it's the start of an encouraging conversation, but
- 0:24Speaker 2: I mean it's a bit of political postom. I think
- 0:27Speaker 2: really what we'd like is some action being taken to
- 0:30Speaker 2: to actually make those changes, rather than just talking about it.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Yes, we all know that the Paris Climate Accords for
- 0:35Speaker 1: the globe and not working. The emission trading scheme is
- 0:38Speaker 1: not working. It needs to be changed. But wood pulling
- 0:41Speaker 1: out of the accords actually put us in the naughty
- 0:44Speaker 1: corner and hurt farmers more.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Well, that's you know, that's certainly one view on it.
- 0:50Speaker 2: That the challenge for us is why the government just
- 0:54Speaker 2: getting on and making the changes that are needed so
- 0:56Speaker 2: that not only the rulesick that can prosper, but also
- 0:59Speaker 2: the New Zealand compostor because as you mentioned, it is
- 1:02Speaker 2: holding back some of the New Zealand's prosperity. And that's
- 1:06Speaker 2: what the two parties are talking about. They're saying, Hey,
- 1:08Speaker 2: how do we adjustice to make this a fit better
- 1:11Speaker 2: of what New Zealand is? Well, the last time I checked,
- 1:13Speaker 2: how you guys are in government? Why don't you change it?
- 1:15Speaker 2: Get on and do it.
- 1:17Speaker 1: So let me get this right. Are you saying, yes,
- 1:20Speaker 1: stay in the Paris Climate Accords, but for God's sake,
- 1:22Speaker 1: try and make some changes to the whole things. Meanwhile
- 1:24Speaker 1: in our domestic economy, make things more rational.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Yeah, what we're saying is the climate rules were set
- 1:30Speaker 2: for ourselves, a New Zealand hero. What causing the problem
- 1:33Speaker 2: not necessarily the Paris Agreement in itself. So we've got
- 1:36Speaker 2: overly ambitious methane targets. We're planning, we're doing full farm
- 1:40Speaker 2: from conversions into forestry conversions. We were still talking about planning,
- 1:47Speaker 2: pricing and egg commissions. Why don't we just scrapple that.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Why don't we get that sorted so that farmers know
- 1:52Speaker 2: where we're sitting and we know what we're doing in
- 1:55Speaker 2: the country.
- 1:55Speaker 1: I'm getting a few techs from farmers right now. Who's saying, look,
- 1:58Speaker 1: I'm carbon neutral already. You know, we're actually doing a
- 2:00Speaker 1: very good job of producing very efficient meat with as
- 2:03Speaker 1: low a mission as you can possibly have. So are
- 2:06Speaker 1: farmers feeling more appreciated with this new government than before?
- 2:11Speaker 2: Definitely, definitely they are, and we're certainly seeing that and
- 2:14Speaker 2: the results that we're getting through in our surveying as well.
- 2:17Speaker 2: And while there is a lot of sentiment out there
- 2:20Speaker 2: around pulling out of Paris, I think when you dig
- 2:23Speaker 2: deeper and they're looking to what's actually holding Paris back,
- 2:25Speaker 2: it is actually what we're setting on ourselves as the government.
- 2:28Speaker 2: And that's what that's what we're saying about this announcement. Hey,
- 2:30Speaker 2: we appreciate the conversation. We like what you're talking about here.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Both acton news on first. But by the way you
- 2:37Speaker 2: guys are in government, you guys can make these changes. Now,
- 2:40Speaker 2: just get on and make these changes that farmers have
- 2:42Speaker 2: got a clear road ahead.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Wayne. I thank you so much, Wayne Langford from Federated Farmers.
