- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Dirty Rush, The Truth about sorority Life with
- 0:04Speaker 1: your hosts me Gia, Judice.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Daisy Kent, and Jennifer Fessler. Hi, guys, I am Jen Bessler,
- 0:14Speaker 2: joined by Daisy Kent and Joan Vasso's and we are
- 0:18Speaker 2: Dirty Rush today. We are here to talk all things
- 0:23Speaker 2: dorm rooms. So how do we get from tapestries and
- 0:27Speaker 2: beer bottles to tiny mansions? It is over the top.
- 0:32Speaker 2: We need to know how this happened. We need to
- 0:35Speaker 2: know why this happened. We need to know the dirty,
- 0:38Speaker 2: dirty details. So Daisy, Joan, what do you think about
- 0:43Speaker 2: what is going on? I don't know, Daisy, You're closer
- 0:45Speaker 2: to this than maybe than Jonah and I are. Was
- 0:48Speaker 2: this going on when you were back in a dorm?
- 0:51Speaker 3: I feel like it definitely was. I don't know if
- 0:53Speaker 3: there were like interior designers doing it, but like some
- 0:56Speaker 3: girls on my floor, they're like everything was like totally
- 1:00Speaker 3: decked out, like their pillows had like their initials on it.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Like and I remember I just got to college and
- 1:06Speaker 3: we had like a bedspread and they brought all my
- 1:08Speaker 3: clothes and then we went after we saw my dorm room,
- 1:11Speaker 3: then me and my parents went and like looked around
- 1:13Speaker 3: and me and my roommate like color, like coated it.
- 1:17Speaker 2: But we didn't go like super all out like I think.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Our dorm room was still really cute, but it wasn't
- 1:21Speaker 3: like anything like super crazy.
- 1:24Speaker 2: I mean that was definitely j What was your experience
- 1:27Speaker 2: that was not mine?
- 1:28Speaker 4: Not at all?
- 1:28Speaker 5: I want to do over. First of all, because I
- 1:30Speaker 5: showed up with my comforter and all my clothes. I
- 1:33Speaker 5: didn't know my roommate like you. We may have had
- 1:36Speaker 5: like one chat on the phone. It's not like now
- 1:38Speaker 5: where you just link up on social media and it's
- 1:40Speaker 5: so easy to get to know each other and each
- 1:42Speaker 5: actually each other's style really because you can see from
- 1:44Speaker 5: their instagram like what kind of person they are or
- 1:47Speaker 5: what if they're going to match your style, Like I remember,
- 1:49Speaker 5: I just showed up with like bare minimum. But I'm
- 1:52Speaker 5: also thinking about my daughters. I moved two daughters and
- 1:54Speaker 5: two sons into dorms, and I mean, you know, they're
- 1:57Speaker 5: in their thirties, so that wasn't that that long ago,
- 2:00Speaker 5: and it wasn't this big of a deal. It was bigger,
- 2:03Speaker 5: but not this big.
- 2:04Speaker 2: When I moved in. My first school was Bosson University.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Then I transferred to UT I don't think my parents
- 2:09Speaker 2: even slowed down when they threw me out of that.
- 2:11Speaker 2: I don't remember that setting up. I don't remember, like
- 2:16Speaker 2: so I when I'm I did it for Rachel. I
- 2:18Speaker 2: don't know that we hired Harry designer. It was right
- 2:21Speaker 2: after COVID, so she was able to get her own room.
- 2:22Speaker 2: But I remember doing They had that wall they just
- 2:25Speaker 2: gotten that wallpaper that peel and stick, and I'm like, so, wait,
- 2:30Speaker 2: you want me to put wallpapers wallpaper up on these bricks.
- 2:34Speaker 2: And I was okay, whatever, Yeah, I did the best
- 2:37Speaker 2: I could. I don't Her room was adorable. It did
- 2:40Speaker 2: not look like what we are seeing now.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Though, Oh my gosh, I never of that putting wallpaper
- 2:46Speaker 3: over the bricks.
- 2:46Speaker 2: That's all thet It's a great idea, I know, I know,
- 2:50Speaker 2: was big. Well, we have our first guest here, you guys,
- 2:54Speaker 2: and I'm very excited to talk to her. So let
- 2:57Speaker 2: us please bring in Amy Joyce.
- 3:00Speaker 3: I can already tell you're just so stylish.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Yeah, seeking that too, Dasy.
- 3:05Speaker 4: We are literally in the middle of Mexico, so getting
- 3:07Speaker 4: Wi FI is just it's a whole you know.
- 3:10Speaker 6: So, yeah, how are you.
- 3:12Speaker 2: We're well, thank you so much for joining us.
- 3:14Speaker 5: Yeah, you must be on vacation. Thank you for being here.
- 3:19Speaker 6: Well, I come here to source for the business.
- 3:22Speaker 4: Oh there are some incredible like artists and artisans and just.
- 3:27Speaker 6: All sorts of things.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Amy, I'm sorry, I'm gonna interrupt. You come to you
- 3:31Speaker 2: go to Mexico to source for dorm rooms?
- 3:34Speaker 4: No, so I am my Amy Choice Designs is a
- 3:37Speaker 4: full service interior design firm. So that is like we
- 3:40Speaker 4: specialize in luxury remodels, new construction, you know. Yes, so
- 3:48Speaker 4: I source for all sorts of you know projects obviously
- 3:51Speaker 4: that we have going on, and this particular dorm room
- 3:55Speaker 4: obviously was.
- 3:56Speaker 6: It was. It was a whole thing. It was amazing.
- 4:01Speaker 4: It was one of the It was kind of honestly
- 4:03Speaker 4: like a one off project. The client that asked me
- 4:07Speaker 4: to do it, their daughter was going off to school.
- 4:09Speaker 4: It's their first child to lead the house. She actually
- 4:13Speaker 4: has impeccable taste them on and she pretty much just
- 4:16Speaker 4: called me and she was like I can't handle this,
- 4:18Speaker 4: Like I need you to come up with the design, implement,
- 4:23Speaker 4: bring your team to install, do all the things. So
- 4:27Speaker 4: it was a start to finish and it was somewhat
- 4:29Speaker 4: fast and furious. We started on this about five and
- 4:33Speaker 4: a half weeks before we actually installed, which is kind
- 4:35Speaker 4: of everything in that room was completely custom.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Was this was the first time that you did this.
- 4:43Speaker 6: That was the first time I had done it.
- 4:44Speaker 4: I had been pushing the dorm design for a few months.
- 4:48Speaker 6: I knew also that.
- 4:49Speaker 4: I was going to be very intentional with the projects
- 4:51Speaker 4: that I took on. Truthfully, a lot of people just
- 4:54Speaker 4: don't know what this, you know, cost. I want to
- 4:59Speaker 4: make sure it's on brain. And for me, this was
- 5:03Speaker 4: just a lot of fun because they clearly love color
- 5:06Speaker 4: and patterns, and their daughter was just I mean, she had,
- 5:11Speaker 4: you know, some influence. So to me, my gift is
- 5:15Speaker 4: being able to spend time with the client and really
- 5:18Speaker 4: being able to kind of pull some things right, like
- 5:20Speaker 4: just as a designer, when I'm meeting someone in their
- 5:22Speaker 4: home and asking the questions and I can see how
- 5:26Speaker 4: their space operates, you know, do they have children, pets,
- 5:30Speaker 4: you know, all the things. And with this it was
- 5:31Speaker 4: a little bit different because I didn't have any of that,
- 5:34Speaker 4: so everything was pretty much virtual.
- 5:35Speaker 6: I mean I didn't even actually meet this lady until
- 5:37Speaker 6: we installed the day she right.
- 5:42Speaker 4: Now we have mutual friends, and she knows some of
- 5:45Speaker 4: my other clients you know, that.
- 5:47Speaker 6: We've worked with.
- 5:48Speaker 4: But she just's so much about trusts and just you know,
- 5:52Speaker 4: for me, like the design and the execution of the design,
- 5:57Speaker 4: but also getting people to understand just visually. You know,
- 6:00Speaker 4: we create like design boards where we're very specific, this
- 6:04Speaker 4: is what's going here. We do AutoCAD renderings.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Oh my god, Amy, did any of this seem I'm
- 6:11Speaker 2: sorry to interrupt you, but does any of this seem
- 6:13Speaker 2: for a dorm room? For you as a design er?
- 6:16Speaker 2: Does it feel a little over the top. I don't
- 6:18Speaker 2: know if you have, if you went you were ever
- 6:21Speaker 2: in a dorm, if you went to the school where
- 6:23Speaker 2: you did any of this, clearly you have the taste
- 6:25Speaker 2: for it. But does any of this feel to you?
- 6:26Speaker 2: And someone calls you and says, listen, design it, do
- 6:30Speaker 2: cad whatever it's called you just said, and all of
- 6:33Speaker 2: it custom it? Like, are you like, what are you
- 6:37Speaker 2: talking about?
- 6:38Speaker 4: Probably not, because I'm very much a maximalus anyways, So
- 6:41Speaker 4: and truthfully, you know, I've been in this industry for
- 6:45Speaker 4: thirteen years. So the projects that have come my way,
- 6:49Speaker 4: it's sometimes it's like, well, you know, my girls were
- 6:53Speaker 4: with me. I have two daughters, and they both were like,
- 6:55Speaker 4: is this what our dorm is gonna look like?
- 6:57Speaker 2: When lucky girls that?
- 6:59Speaker 5: Yeah, I looked. I did a little research on this,
- 7:03Speaker 5: and I found out that it's a fourteen billion dollars
- 7:08Speaker 5: a year industry, so you know, people are spending money
- 7:12Speaker 5: on this, but normally it's door.
- 7:13Speaker 2: I would think more of it as dormified than hiring
- 7:16Speaker 2: an actual decorator. Total custom. I mean, I it seems
- 7:21Speaker 2: extravagant to me, and I honestly it's you did an
- 7:25Speaker 2: unbelievable job, but I don't know how popular it's becoming
- 7:28Speaker 2: to do that. And did it seem at first crazy
- 7:30Speaker 2: to you at all? Just to get get the dorm room?
- 7:33Speaker 2: I don't mean decorating, no, No.
- 7:35Speaker 4: I think the part that was a little bit overwhelming
- 7:38Speaker 4: was that I was never able to get into that
- 7:40Speaker 4: space before. It's all so I'm relying on college kids
- 7:45Speaker 4: that are running this off canthus dorm situation to get
- 7:48Speaker 4: me measurements. My client never even solved the space before
- 7:53Speaker 4: we insolved, so there was a lot of I mean,
- 7:56Speaker 4: we had to do some kind of deep diving. We
- 7:58Speaker 4: found some parents that have had the exact layout, and
- 8:02Speaker 4: I was able to reach out to people and say,
- 8:03Speaker 4: can you send me some pictures like you know, I mean,
- 8:06Speaker 4: I've been doing this long enough that I know, you know,
- 8:09Speaker 4: standard sizes for doors and windows, and so we're able
- 8:12Speaker 4: to come up you know, like a lot of the measurements.
- 8:13Speaker 4: But it was that that part was probably the most frustrating.
- 8:18Speaker 4: And then the day of the install because she was
- 8:22Speaker 4: on the seventeenth floor, so it was the penthouse of
- 8:26Speaker 4: the dorm, and we were only to go up the elevator.
- 8:30Speaker 4: They would not allow us to go back down. So
- 8:32Speaker 4: I'm not only because I live in Dallas and this
- 8:36Speaker 4: project was an awesome I not only had my wallpaper
- 8:39Speaker 4: installers there, my moving company that had come to pick
- 8:42Speaker 4: everything up, you know, because we had when you look
- 8:45Speaker 4: at that space, the headboard was custom, the hutch, the
- 8:50Speaker 4: all of it, right.
- 8:51Speaker 6: So it's coming to me.
- 8:52Speaker 4: I had to have people come pick it up, bring it,
- 8:54Speaker 4: you know, to the university. I had my installer who
- 8:57Speaker 4: hangs things, and I mean that part was very chaotic.
- 9:01Speaker 2: I mean, I'm sure for you it was really fun.
- 9:03Speaker 2: I'm trying to picture saying to my daughter, Okay, we're
- 9:05Speaker 2: going to hire a decorator. I mean, I just that
- 9:07Speaker 2: part for you. And obviously you're you were you were
- 9:11Speaker 2: a master at it, but it was it was it
- 9:13Speaker 2: U t this school. Yes, so I graduated from Texas.
- 9:17Speaker 2: I promise you, my friend. This is the nicest storm
- 9:20Speaker 2: room anyone at the University of Texas has ever had.
- 9:38Speaker 5: I'm really like so shocked by that you actually wallpapered
- 9:42Speaker 5: the walls, because that's such a like I mean, that's
- 9:45Speaker 5: first of all, there's cinderblock. I'm assuming because at least
- 9:47Speaker 5: that's what they used to be when I was in college.
- 9:49Speaker 5: And I'm wondering, like that is a huge job. And
- 9:52Speaker 5: I look at like some of the stuff you did,
- 9:54Speaker 5: and she can take this to her next place that
- 9:56Speaker 5: she lives, so she can take that headboard in the
- 9:59Speaker 5: chair that match like the curtains, but she can't take
- 10:02Speaker 5: stor she can't take that hutch. You're not gonna have
- 10:04Speaker 5: the same size desk, You're not taking the wallpaper. So
- 10:06Speaker 5: this is like a huge expense of only certain things
- 10:11Speaker 5: that can be reused. I mean that just sounds like
- 10:14Speaker 5: so excessive to me. I can't imagine. I would have
- 10:17Speaker 5: loved to have done that for my daughter, but I'm
- 10:19Speaker 5: not sure if I would have.
- 10:21Speaker 4: I think too one thing, just what I've seen the feedback,
- 10:25Speaker 4: you know, from even just the posting of this project, right,
- 10:30Speaker 4: and you know, there are some people you know that
- 10:32Speaker 4: feel that way, but there are also a lot of
- 10:33Speaker 4: people that you know, and this family is incredible. There
- 10:37Speaker 4: was one moment in the day when we were installing
- 10:39Speaker 4: and they the dad was there and he was like, hey,
- 10:42Speaker 4: let's have let's have a family hug, like because both
- 10:45Speaker 4: siblings were there for her, and I just kind of
- 10:48Speaker 4: stood there and I was like, you know, they have
- 10:50Speaker 4: the means and this family it is important to them
- 10:52Speaker 4: that their daughter feels and literally is an extension of
- 10:55Speaker 4: their home. Because if you saw their home and it's
- 10:57Speaker 4: so similar to you know, what we were able to
- 11:01Speaker 4: do in the space, you know it.
- 11:03Speaker 6: Might not be for everyone.
- 11:04Speaker 4: But at the same time, like I know, for me
- 11:07Speaker 4: as a designer, my spaces are not for everyone, these
- 11:11Speaker 4: services are not, you know, for everyone.
- 11:14Speaker 6: I think there's.
- 11:14Speaker 4: Ways, you know, to kind of give people, you know,
- 11:17Speaker 4: tricks and trades.
- 11:18Speaker 6: Even with the wallpaper it was peeling stick.
- 11:21Speaker 2: I told them about that. I did that for my daughters.
- 11:23Speaker 2: It did not look like that. It was one little
- 11:26Speaker 2: wall and then I told her to leave me alone.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I was leaving. I'll see you at Thanksgiving. Listen, I beg,
- 11:33Speaker 2: you got a lot of business from this my friend. Yeah,
- 11:35Speaker 2: that's what I'm wondering too, left and right.
- 11:38Speaker 4: Yeah, and you know, I mean again, I think for me,
- 11:40Speaker 4: it's like really kind of getting into you know, who
- 11:43Speaker 4: the client is what, and I mean this girl is.
- 11:45Speaker 6: She's so sweet.
- 11:46Speaker 4: And it's a three bedroom, so she had you know,
- 11:48Speaker 4: two other roommates that were and they were.
- 11:51Speaker 6: You know, excited for her.
- 11:52Speaker 4: We even got to do some extension, like in the
- 11:54Speaker 4: living room and you know, we hung art. We had
- 11:56Speaker 4: all sorts of fun accessories. I love to customize anything,
- 11:59Speaker 4: so I paint. I brought all sorts of customized you
- 12:02Speaker 4: know things just specific you know, for her, you know,
- 12:06Speaker 4: like knowing who she is, what she likes, you know,
- 12:09Speaker 4: all the things. So yeah, it was definitely I just
- 12:13Speaker 4: keep thinking, like fast and furious.
- 12:15Speaker 2: This is a freshman year.
- 12:17Speaker 6: Yeah, it's our freshman year. Yes, yeah, have a.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Roommate And was her roommate's like side like decorated too, so.
- 12:24Speaker 4: She doesn't have a roommate in her actual room there's
- 12:26Speaker 4: three other like there's three bedrooms total.
- 12:29Speaker 6: It's kind of cool.
- 12:30Speaker 4: I actually left there, and it's so great for me
- 12:33Speaker 4: having my kids there watching this too, because one we're
- 12:35Speaker 4: doing problem solving and you know.
- 12:36Speaker 6: They love being around these college girls.
- 12:39Speaker 4: But the rooms were like so happy for her and
- 12:42Speaker 4: just like excited, like this is.
- 12:44Speaker 6: Such a cool you know space.
- 12:45Speaker 4: I mean, there's spaces were great, you know, but obviously
- 12:50Speaker 4: we went over the top.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Yeah, it's good for her.
- 12:53Speaker 5: I have a question, though, do do you ever see
- 12:57Speaker 5: the boys rooms getting decorated really nice? Like I had
- 13:00Speaker 5: two sons who went to college, I had two daughters.
- 13:02Speaker 5: The daughter's rooms were always really pretty, you know, but
- 13:04Speaker 5: we I feel like the guys are being left out here.
- 13:08Speaker 2: No way my son would be like get was like
- 13:11Speaker 2: thanks mom and see ya.
- 13:13Speaker 5: Oh yeah. I feel like they like would run a
- 13:15Speaker 5: sofa or you know, some something comfort, some comfort from
- 13:18Speaker 5: homes that have reached out because we've had so much response.
- 13:23Speaker 6: So I basically, you know, I did like a.
- 13:25Speaker 4: Comment dorm and you'll get on my dorm list or whatever,
- 13:28Speaker 4: and a lot of them are moms of sons and
- 13:32Speaker 4: you know they did. But I mean, yeah, I get
- 13:34Speaker 4: it when we may not, you know, do as much
- 13:37Speaker 4: or you know, but no, I mean I I I
- 13:41Speaker 4: we do male, you know, more masculine space all the time.
- 13:45Speaker 4: I don't know if a which age you know, freshman
- 13:48Speaker 4: is going to want you know, a girl coming in,
- 13:50Speaker 4: you know, to do his space. But I'm totally you know.
- 13:55Speaker 4: I mean, that's the thing with this business for me,
- 13:57Speaker 4: and I knew when we were doing this project, I
- 13:59Speaker 4: was like, I want this to different than any other
- 14:01Speaker 4: dorm room that I've seen. It was truthfully, it was
- 14:04Speaker 4: sometime it was intimidating me just because I'm ever, you know,
- 14:10Speaker 4: I knew I could do it. I knew my team
- 14:12Speaker 4: would execute all those things. But the troll side of
- 14:16Speaker 4: me of like, how what I went into that project
- 14:19Speaker 4: on that Saturday because we did all this in one day.
- 14:21Speaker 4: We got there at eight am and we looked at
- 14:22Speaker 4: nine thirty, and I had three options for everything because
- 14:28Speaker 4: I was like, what if this doesn't fit whatever.
- 14:32Speaker 6: Truthfully, she was supposed to have a whole.
- 14:34Speaker 4: Different layout, and the very last minute she got switched
- 14:37Speaker 4: to the ADA room, which cuts off almost half of
- 14:40Speaker 4: the space. So I was adjusting everything. I'm like, these
- 14:43Speaker 4: people just paid me to have all these things made custom.
- 14:46Speaker 4: We got to figure out a way to make it happen.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Wow. I mean you definitely did your job. And then
- 14:53Speaker 2: it's a lot.
- 14:54Speaker 4: But I mean just seeing like her excitement and trufully
- 14:58Speaker 4: just seeing the you know, excitement from the engagement you
- 15:01Speaker 4: know on social and I mean, I know it's not
- 15:04Speaker 4: for everybody, but I love it. And I walked away,
- 15:06Speaker 4: which it's so proud.
- 15:07Speaker 5: I was like, that is I bet you did?
- 15:10Speaker 2: Like I would live in the would I would too,
- 15:13Speaker 2: so I would live there. Yeah.
- 15:14Speaker 5: I think it's nicer than my house.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Yeah you too, Amy. Thank you for joining us. We
- 15:18Speaker 2: really appreciate you. Please enjoy Mexico.
- 15:20Speaker 6: We don't have a great day.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Ok, Okay, So we're going to bring in Riley and
- 15:40Speaker 3: she is in her college girl era and we're going
- 15:43Speaker 3: to talk to her all about her dorm room. So
- 15:46Speaker 3: let's bring Riley in.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Hi. Thank you for joining us.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Yes, thank you guys so much for having me.
- 15:53Speaker 3: Of course, So you lived in the sorority house last year, right, Yes,
- 15:57Speaker 3: my sophomore year.
- 15:58Speaker 1: So I lived in the house and it was just
- 16:01Speaker 1: it was perfect.
- 16:02Speaker 2: But yes, it looks perfect. We have some pictures here, Riley.
- 16:05Speaker 2: I mean, seriously, I don't know that I ever had
- 16:09Speaker 2: a room that looks that look that good. And I'm
- 16:11Speaker 2: fifty eight and we amding my I'm just in a
- 16:14Speaker 2: new house. Nope, I don't think I'm gonna get this effect.
- 16:18Speaker 1: That's funny you say that. My dad said the same thing.
- 16:20Speaker 1: He's like, why does my room not look this nice?
- 16:23Speaker 1: You're living in a dorm and your room is like
- 16:25Speaker 1: nicer than mine. Like he was just like we had
- 16:28Speaker 1: we put him to work, Riley.
- 16:30Speaker 2: I mean, you have a scance lighting up a picture above.
- 16:34Speaker 2: You have a light like reflected so you could really
- 16:37Speaker 2: see this monet ish. I don't know what's going on
- 16:40Speaker 2: with this small print you have by your bed and
- 16:44Speaker 2: you have sconces light up sconces, sconce it. Yes.
- 16:49Speaker 1: No, I was definitely very into designing my dorm room.
- 16:53Speaker 1: And luckily I have like an angel roommate who she
- 16:57Speaker 1: was like, yeah, do whatever you want, like and I
- 17:00Speaker 1: was like I told her. I was like, okay, I
- 17:01Speaker 1: ordered us some sconces. She's like, what's a sconce And I.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Was like, literally would not know.
- 17:08Speaker 3: No one was telling me about it before.
- 17:10Speaker 2: And then I was like, oh that is.
- 17:12Speaker 5: Like yeah, I know that they're they're big now and
- 17:16Speaker 5: they add like such a like sophisticated air to a
- 17:20Speaker 5: dorm room. I mean, we didn't have sconces. We didn't
- 17:22Speaker 5: have so far. It's like our dorm rooms were about studying.
- 17:27Speaker 5: I feel like that's not true anymore.
- 17:29Speaker 2: But this is your sorority house. This is right, So
- 17:32Speaker 2: this is okay. And you mentioned that your roommate was
- 17:37Speaker 2: an angel, and let you in my mind in this scenario,
- 17:41Speaker 2: you are definitely the angel. Like if I'm that mom,
- 17:46Speaker 2: I'm like, we score. Oh my god, so sweet. Yeah.
- 17:51Speaker 2: I just I love that stuff.
- 17:53Speaker 1: I love designing things like I just feel like I
- 17:56Speaker 1: love when it all comes together. Like that's like my
- 17:58Speaker 1: favorite part about moving into any new room because I've
- 18:02Speaker 1: had to move every year. Freshman year, we were in
- 18:05Speaker 1: like the standard dorms. In the sore year, we were
- 18:08Speaker 1: in the house, and then this year I'm off campus.
- 18:10Speaker 1: So it's a little bit different at TCU because our
- 18:14Speaker 1: dorms are actually on campus, so we have something called
- 18:18Speaker 1: Greek Village. So all of our sorority houses, they're all
- 18:21Speaker 1: on campus, right next to the sophomore dorms.
- 18:24Speaker 2: So you're required to live on campus. Two years.
- 18:26Speaker 1: So it's really fun because you're by all of the
- 18:28Speaker 1: sophomores regardless of if you.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Live in the house or not.
- 18:32Speaker 3: So that was really fun. Did you do this all
- 18:34Speaker 3: by yourself? Like, did you style the room all by yourself?
- 18:37Speaker 5: Yes?
- 18:38Speaker 1: I just like kept finding things and then put it
- 18:41Speaker 1: all together and it worked.
- 18:43Speaker 2: You're on a terior design major, so.
- 18:45Speaker 5: I was just going to ask, are you have you
- 18:47Speaker 5: thought about like being an interior design major. You obviously
- 18:50Speaker 5: have a talent for it and you love it.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Yes, I definitely love it. I'm not I wish I was,
- 18:54Speaker 1: because our program at our school is just amazing. I'm
- 18:58Speaker 1: actually finance and Fashion merchandising major, so yeah, you get.
- 19:03Speaker 5: A job on your ount. I'm a chair designer, so
- 19:06Speaker 5: it's a super fun career. But I mean you're gorying
- 19:09Speaker 5: to make a lot more money probably being a finance major.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Speaking in money, how much did all this cost you?
- 19:15Speaker 1: Yeah, honestly, I was able to do it pretty affordable.
- 19:19Speaker 1: I had a lot of like Great Home Goods and
- 19:21Speaker 1: Amazon fines, so it wasn't like crazy, and I found
- 19:27Speaker 1: like the sofa at Target on sale, so it wasn't
- 19:32Speaker 1: like absurd. I feel like recently, there's been so much
- 19:35Speaker 1: about like the hiring into your designer's for doorms and
- 19:39Speaker 1: it being just like absurdly expensive, and so I feel
- 19:43Speaker 1: like being able to see that you can do it
- 19:46Speaker 1: kind of on a budget and not spend like tens
- 19:49Speaker 1: of thousands of dollars. But it's just looking a lot
- 19:54Speaker 1: and like really trying to find those deals because that's
- 19:58Speaker 1: kind of the hard part because I'll see something and
- 20:00Speaker 1: it's so expensive and then it's like, okay, wait, I
- 20:03Speaker 1: could find something maybe a little bit more affordable and
- 20:06Speaker 1: get the same vibe across Joan.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Do you find because you're a head designer, like now
- 20:10Speaker 2: everything is about restoration hardware dupes and you could find
- 20:13Speaker 2: them on Amazon som room right, like you could. Just
- 20:18Speaker 2: it's fun almost. I would go up on AI and say,
- 20:20Speaker 2: I want my dorm to look like it cost fifty
- 20:24Speaker 2: thousand dollars to decorate all dupes of whatever.
- 20:28Speaker 5: Same thing, and they have and really dupes that are
- 20:30Speaker 5: so good, and I feel like that's like a really
- 20:32Speaker 5: popular esthetic. Now I have a question for you, though,
- 20:35Speaker 5: So I know you do this because you want to
- 20:37Speaker 5: like your dormom to feel homeye, And I love that
- 20:39Speaker 5: and I wish I had like that was like a
- 20:41Speaker 5: thing when my kids were going to school because I
- 20:43Speaker 5: felt like I left them and you know, they have
- 20:44Speaker 5: no they didn't really have the comforts of home. They
- 20:46Speaker 5: had like a bedspread they picked out and their clothes,
- 20:48Speaker 5: and I, you know, I love that you do this,
- 20:51Speaker 5: But I wonder is some of this about Instagram and
- 20:53Speaker 5: about the social media and the competition that I kind
- 20:56Speaker 5: of feel like everybody's now. I love seeing them pop
- 20:59Speaker 5: up on my phone and I love looking at them,
- 21:01Speaker 5: but I feel like, boy, that's a lot of pressure.
- 21:04Speaker 2: For sure.
- 21:05Speaker 1: I feel like it's kind of created this like unnecessary
- 21:08Speaker 1: pressure when it's like if you're doing it for the
- 21:11Speaker 1: wrong reasons, it can totally feel like that. And I
- 21:13Speaker 1: mean I love to make like TikTok Day in the
- 21:16Speaker 1: Life videos and stuff so like, and.
- 21:19Speaker 2: I also love hosting people.
- 21:20Speaker 1: So I feel like for me, it was like, I
- 21:24Speaker 1: my environment impacts me a lot. So I if my
- 21:27Speaker 1: space looks like exactly how I want it to, like,
- 21:30Speaker 1: I just feel very calm and like just I just
- 21:33Speaker 1: feel a lot more settled. So that's kind of how
- 21:36Speaker 1: I thought about it. But I do think especially with
- 21:40Speaker 1: like actually hiring an interior designer like that has just
- 21:44Speaker 1: changed the game. And I feel like it has created
- 21:46Speaker 1: an added pressure just for girls coming into school, especially
- 21:50Speaker 1: freshman year, like you want to like fit in and
- 21:53Speaker 1: make it work and stuff. But I do think it
- 21:56Speaker 1: really can create unnecessary pressure.
- 21:59Speaker 2: I agree, And I think Joe, I don't know if
- 22:00Speaker 2: you felt like this, I did for as a as
- 22:03Speaker 2: a mom, because all the moms also post the door
- 22:07Speaker 2: after your your kid moves in, and it's you know,
- 22:12Speaker 2: you have to show your work. It's basically to you know,
- 22:16Speaker 2: to your social media following. And so I am not creative.
- 22:21Speaker 2: I am not at all. I don't know, I'm not
- 22:23Speaker 2: good with interior design. And I remember feeling that pressure.
- 22:26Speaker 2: So I was peeling off wallpaper and putting it onto bricks.
- 22:29Speaker 2: But you know it's crazy.
- 22:32Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, no, I definitely felt it too. But you know,
- 22:36Speaker 5: like I said, it wasn't really to disagree at all
- 22:39Speaker 5: when either one of my daughters were going to school.
- 22:40Speaker 5: They're in their thirties now, and it was kind of
- 22:43Speaker 5: just starting up, I feel like at that time, and
- 22:45Speaker 5: so if you did anything extra, you kind of got
- 22:48Speaker 5: like a little applause. Now now it's like way beyond,
- 22:51Speaker 5: and I feel like a lot of people are spending
- 22:52Speaker 5: a lot of money. I know you, like a lot
- 22:54Speaker 5: of people are doing it on a budget, but I
- 22:56Speaker 5: think the people that don't have budgets, it's putting a
- 22:59Speaker 5: lot of pressure on everybody else. I almost feel bad
- 23:02Speaker 5: for the other girls who are you moving into the dorm,
- 23:05Speaker 5: especially as freshmen. I like, I love everything I brought,
- 23:07Speaker 5: and then they see the one next door with the
- 23:09Speaker 5: wallpaper and the curtains and vanities, and I feel a
- 23:12Speaker 5: little bad for them.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Yeah, me too. Well, okay, so Riley, we are so impressed.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Your room is just gorgeous. You are just gorgeous, and
- 23:21Speaker 2: thank you so much for joining us. Yes, thank you
- 23:24Speaker 2: guys so much.
