- speaker-0: Hey, welcome in Average Home Theater. I am Nelson. speaker-1: What's happening everybody is producer Nick. speaker-0: Producer Nick needs no introduction. ⁓ so we are going to talk today about Ready or Not Two. ⁓ wait, no, no, I'm sorry. ⁓ it's the ripoff of Ready or Not Two ⁓ called They Will Kill You. speaker-1: So you got you got ⁓ rip off vibes from it also, huh? speaker-0: I did. ⁓ as I was watching it, I'm like, you know, this is almost like who did it better material, but the problem is I would know who did it better. It it it speaker-1: Yeah, not really compared to close enough. So ⁓ before we go too much further, ⁓ just so the folks out there know, per usual, we both watched this and have not discussed it ahead of time. So I don't know, I don't know how you feel about it. You don't know how how I feel about it. ⁓ that's yes. ⁓ I I I got ready or not vibes very much and with a little bit of mix of ⁓ kill bill. speaker-0: Correct. speaker-1: For some reason I got I got some kill bill in there. Maybe the graphic violence and blood spewing everywhere and ninja sword speaker-0: And direct rip off of of ⁓ Quentin Tarantino style. speaker-1: Yes, it was a revenge story, wasn't it? speaker-0: Here's the thing, okay. Every director, every writer has uses inspiration from someone else, right? Yes. So I don't want to dog this person who is Krill Sokolov. I don't want to dog Krill for speaker-1: Especially nowadays everyone borrows a little bit. speaker-0: Right. ⁓ so i he he was very inspired by Quentin Tarantino's style. Yes. But also Ready or Not's basically their plot is very similar. ⁓ so similar that this was the trailer in Ready or Not two. Am I am I right? Okay. speaker-1: I mean, I remember seeing it. ⁓ it's one of the few movies that I've seen where every single trailer, I wanna see that. I wanna see that. I wanna see it. And this was one of ⁓ It looked very interesting. ⁓ speaker-0: And I suggested you watch it because I did enjoy it. Okay. I am not saying that this is a bad movie. That's that's not what I'm saying. ⁓ I really did enjoy it and I told you, I said, Hey, they will kill you is on HBO Max. You need to watch it. Right? Basically is what I said, something to that effect. speaker-1: Yeah. And I had seen it a couple of days before I had seen it and remember thinking, ⁓ that's that movie with Zazzy beats that we saw the preview and it looked really interesting, which ⁓ she was she was fantastic. ⁓ I thought she was really good. She she obviously ⁓ she was into it. She obviously cared about the role, she put in the work physically, ⁓ she was very very animated and I I really and she was the best part of the movie to me. ⁓ I really enjoyed her and I like her the little bit that I've seen her in, I like her in general already. Mm-hmm. speaker-0: Yeah, she's a good actress. She ⁓ she did well. The rest of the cast, I mean, Patricia Arquette was really good. Like it was hard to even tell that was her. speaker-1: as we're watching it, is is that Patricia Orquette? ⁓ I said it out loud 'cause I didn't realize it was her until a couple of minutes in. speaker-0: Heather Graham. ⁓ I did not realize that James Remar was the pig's head. speaker-1: James Re Moore did the voice, yeah. speaker-0: ⁓ so yeah, there there was there's quite a few people in here. ⁓ what's his name? ⁓ Tom Felton. Yeah, I've seen him and other stuff. So all the acting was good really. speaker-1: It was a good Yeah, I agree. I agree. And it was it was fun. I like the style. I I liked I liked the first half more than the second half. Mm-hmm. the the scenes where they were underneath the floor, I don't know if it was Vince or not, but that was ⁓ the way it was shot. The hotel, first of all, the hotel looked awesome. Yep. it it it was kinda like a character all its own. It was kinda surreal and all that. But when they were underneath ⁓ the way it was shot, like the the actors following the camera And ⁓ and those kind of things and like they put speaker-0: And it was shot ⁓ in like a cross section. Yeah. So speaker-1: Yeah, when they'd pull out and show the wide shots you could see it it reminded me of ⁓ Steve Zu Life Aquatic when they pulled out and showed the cross section of the the the ship, the boat they were on. ⁓ so yeah, there were there were definitely parts of it that I really enjoyed. The the action for the most part was really good. They lost me a little bit at the end with the when she started doing the Matrix style slow motion ninja flips. ⁓ I kinda I which is ridiculous or something like that to pull me out of a movie like this, but speaker-0: The basic premise, I guess, we should we should talk about is she and her sister at the very beginning of the we're it's spoiler free, so I just want to give the basic synopsis. Yeah. Zazi beats his character's name is Asia Reeves, and her sister is Maria. And they are trying to escape the opening scene, they're trying to escape an abusive father. Correct. And something happens. Zaz Zazi beats or Asia ends up going to prison and it says ten years later, yeah, she's she arrives at the hotel and you don't really know exactly what she's doing there, but basically she's trying to find her sister. speaker-1: Yeah. Not too not super deep, not too hard to figure out what's going on. ⁓ that that aspect of it. But that aspect as you right as you get a little bit further on and when the when the ⁓ the old blood starts flowing, then you 'cause I so there was when she first starts ⁓ when the action first begins, I wasn't expecting certain things to happen. without giving it too much away. Like I wasn't expecting certain people to do some of the things that they did. speaker-0: Right. ⁓ I didn't know it was a horror movie. I thought it was just more like a kill bill. I thought it was just a crazy action movie, but it actually is a horror comedy. Correct. So take take of that what you will without us giving anything away. speaker-1: But it was it was it was pretty funny. speaker-0: Yeah, I laughed out loud a couple of times. Look. speaker-1: The funniest part in the movie for me, I will never not laugh at an adult human being punching a child in the face. I will never ever not laugh at that in that context. I'm not I'm not I'm not a proponent of child abuse. However, in a movie in a movie where a kid is doing something annoying or that shouldn't be done and the grown adult punches the character, the child character in the face and he flies across the room. That's that's just that will never not be fine. speaker-0: That's pretty damn funny. Yeah. So you're not like ⁓ you're not like Bernie Mack when he said, When a kid turns one years old, I believe he could be hit in the throat or the stomach. speaker-1: Throat to stomach, yep. I ⁓ I I'm o I'm okay with that. I mean, I guess it depends on the kid and what they did. No, that's it's never okay to hit a child. speaker-0: No. We're just joking. We're just being as Robert De Niro said, I'm just being humorous. speaker-1: being humorous. so having said that that was that was pretty funny. and then ⁓ yeah it was it was it was kind of funny all around. It was all in cheek. speaker-0: Heather Graham was good. She w she reminded me speaker-1: I didn't recognize her either at first. I I I she's ⁓ I wanna say she's age, she is aged, but it wasn't that. It just she looked different. I maybe it I'd never seen her her hair that way before, like all straight and kinda long. speaker-0: Probably because you haven't watched anything with her in it lately. I watched that movie ⁓ with her and Barbara Crampton ⁓ from a couple of years ago and she looked kinda like that, so I it's ⁓ I'm looking it up right now. speaker-1: And she looked she looked healthier than I've never never even heard. speaker-0: Suitable flesh. Yeah, it it came out a couple of years ago. ⁓ and she looked kinda like, you know, then. speaker-1: She looked a little healthier, like she had a little bit more ⁓ a little bit more meat on her bones. She didn't look as ⁓ as thin, which is I mean it it's great. She looked awesome. It just I I didn't realize it was her at first. ⁓ yeah, she was she was really good. The the her whole her character did some some funny things. speaker-0: Yes, and parts of her did some funny things. Yeah. Yeah. I I I rather enjoyed that that little segment. At first I was kinda like, What are they doing? But as it went on I I I kinda enjoyed it. I thought it was it it was neat. I had never seen anything like that. So I thought that was pretty cool. You know. speaker-1: Yeah, it was I I enjoyed it. The so it was gross but it was it was pretty funny. let's see, what else what else good great good about this movie? ⁓ speaker-0: I mean the story okay, like I said, we can't there is a reveal and I don't wanna I don't wanna give that away for people who wanna see it and haven't seen it yet. Yeah, it's kinda tricky to to talk about it. ⁓ but the story speaker-1: And it's fairly long. speaker-0: It was kind of original, but then like I said, you have your whole ready or not aspect that gets really close. And yeah, I think that's kind of what bothered me more than anything. It's like y'all could have come up with another reason. Like that could have been something you didn't have to go this route, the route that they went. They could have gone a different direction and the movie may have been a little more effective, you know. speaker-1: Yeah. And especially so close to the release of the second Ready or Not movie, it was ⁓ it was it was glaringly obvious that it was I don't know, you don't want to say copycat, maybe. But I mean the first Ready or Not came out a a bunch of years ago, so I don't know. it was it was f it was quite similar. Yeah. Quite similar to the Ready or Not movies, but still still enjoyable. ⁓ as you had said after you watched it, good Not great, not gonna buy it. But it was it was fun. ⁓ probably, probably won't watch it again. But ⁓ speaker-0: I don't know. I I I'm not saying there's a ⁓ I would never watch it again. I don't know what situation would call me to watch it again, but I would never like refuse. I ain't watch it. No, I would never be like speaker-1: ⁓ no no no, nothing like that. Like if it would be on or whatever I wouldn't turn it off but speaker-0: Or if somebody else wants to watch it and I'm with ⁓ yeah, turn it on, it's pretty good. speaker-1: ⁓ but I mean given a choice, if I'm sitting down and hey, I wanna watch this style of movie, I'm gonna watch Ready or Not Two, which which just came out on ⁓ on physical media. speaker-0: Ready or not. Literally it just came in the mail today. That's why I have this right here. speaker-1: Yeah, I got mine in yesterday. I'm gonna watch ⁓ I think I'm this weekend I'm gonna watch ⁓ back to back. speaker-0: And getting back to the Quentin Tarantino aspect, it's not just the gratuitous violence and the the blood spraying all over the place like Kill Bill. They also he also did it in chapters like like Quentin Tarantino does. It'll like somebody'll make a point or ask a question, and then boom, it'll be like a little bit of a flashback, and it'll have like that person's name, and it's like their little backstory leading up to that point. speaker-1: Mm-hmm. Yeah he did. Very speaker-0: weapons you know weapons did that yeah so that's why i don't want to i don't want to break this guy's balls too much because other people borrow from from quentin but they did that in here so it you know it's it's fine it's just whenever you watch it quentin is so unique and distinct in the way he does it this this like You know, weapons did it, but it it it didn't feel like a direct Quentin Tarantino ripoff. This kinda is what it's feel speaker-1: Well when Weapons did it, Weapons like told a whole story from a character's perspective and then moved on to the next car it wasn't flashbacks, it was almost like different episodes kinda. You know, it they telling the same story from just different perspectives. So it was a little bit different in that aspect, but this was yeah, this was little quick five, ten minute flashbacks. ⁓ definitely it it was a it was a tribute. It was a tribute to ⁓ Yeah. speaker-0: Yeah, we'll go I'll stop saying rip off. It it was a it was an ode. It w it was a tribute. So speaker-1: So one thing that I've I've seen it a lot in these kind of movies lately and I don't know what it is. ⁓ the action, some of the action seems like it's almost like it's spliced together. Do you know what I'm talking about? Where it's almost like it's almost CGI, but it's not. I I I noticed it in in the nobody movies, the first nobody movie and the second nobody movie, which I did not like the second one at all. But it's almost like there's like Really, really quick, like minuscule cuts. But it's not a cut. It almost looks like it's looks like it's CGI. And I don't know how to explain it better than that. ⁓ but it it just it just kind of looks weird. It almost looks animated. speaker-0: Are you talking about when it gets kinda slow and it like rotates around type thing? 'Cause they just use multiple cameras to get that effect. speaker-1: It's it's like that, but it's the same angle. I know exactly what you're talking about. It it's cut it's got kinda like that effect, but it it's it's the same angle. It's almost looks I don't know if it's like wire work and it just looks weird and they erasing the wire. I don't I don't know what it is. ⁓ I'm probably making a damn fool out of myself because I don't know how to explain what I'm talking about. But ⁓ speaker-0: Yeah, I didn't I didn't notice anything. speaker-1: I noticed it in the in the first fight scene. I don't know, it just it's something that I noticed in the movies and it's distracting. speaker-0: I know sometimes depending on what they're trying to do, I know sometimes they shoot at different frame rates. They'll shoot at more frame rates or less frame fewer frame rates to get it. speaker-1: Maybe that's maybe that's what it is. speaker-0: What did you think about the overall picture quality? Did you think it looked good? I thought it looked great on my projector. speaker-1: Yes. It looked good to me. I did the colors, ⁓ I said earlier the hotel, the the the reds and golds and everything, ⁓ everything kinda stood out. ⁓ and then yeah, the the blood spraying everywhere and all. speaker-0: Well, I like whenever a movie has dark scenes and it's not so dark you can't see what's going on and stuff. So I don't know. I think I just the cinematography was just really, really good in it. ⁓ I thought it looked great. Yeah. speaker-1: ⁓ and that goes back to the when they're in the rolling around under the floor, ⁓ the way that all that stuff was shot. That was that was really good. There were some parts where ⁓ like you couldn't even tell if they were shooting it from above, like the way they were in the tunnels and all that stuff, and the way they were moving and going from one corner to the other, like you couldn't even really tell ⁓ if they were shooting from above or if it's behind or whatever. I th there was it was neat. The way they that whole that whole sequence was really neat the way they ⁓ the way they did that. speaker-0: And the audio act surprisingly on HBO Max, it was in Dolby Atmos. The way HBO Max had changed their tiers, you didn't get four K and Dolby Atmos un unless you get the really expensive tier. Yeah. Well, I don't have that. I have the second to highest one, which used to be the expensive tier, but then they changed it and I didn't upgrade. Right. Well, so you don't get four K and you don't get you usually don't get Dolby Atmos, but for some reason this movie I was getting Adolby Atmos audio. Okay. ⁓ and I thought it sounded pretty damn good. You know, I had it I had it rocking in here 'cause I was by myself. ⁓ Jamie and Mia weren't here and I was I was rocking it out. It it sounded good for a digital screen. speaker-1: Yeah, I didn't I didn't have any complaints about the audio. I mean yeah in the air it sounded it sounded fine. speaker-0: Well, I guess we'll go ahead it there's not much more to say without giving away what you call it, ⁓ spoilers. But we'll go ahead and we'll Yeah, go ahead and check it out. I'm gonna give it a rating of I'll give it a seven. I think it was worthy enough of a seven. ⁓ because you know, my rule if I'm gonna suggest somebody watch it's gotta be at least a seven. And I suggested that you watch it because I enjoyed it. So it's a it's a seven. speaker-1: I'm gonna say I'm gonna give the first half a seven. Mm-hmm. And I I might have to watch it again and pinpoint exactly why it fell off for me, but I'm gonna give the second half a six. So overall six and a half. speaker-0: I can totally understand that. speaker-1: Absolutely. And I I'd I would recommend it, definitely. ⁓ recommended watching. speaker-0: Yeah, it's it's it's a And it's on a if you have HBO Max, it doesn't cost you anything. It's not a waste of time. However, enjoy it. Yeah, if you like Radio Not Two, you like Quentin Tarantino, you'll enjoy it. speaker-1: Four and a half it's a fun time, yeah. Yeah. And again, can't overstate how much ⁓ Zazzy beats ⁓ was she was great. Like she really was good. Every every aspect of it she was really good. Yeah. speaker-0: Well, we'll go ahead and wrap this up. It's been 20 minutes. I think that's enough. So like, subscribe, tell your friends, and we'll catch y'all in the next one. See y'all.
