- 0:05Welcome back to the Remodel Report. I'm Chris
- 0:08and today we're talking about luxury kitchen
- 0:10cabinets. And more specifically, what actually
- 0:13makes them worth the money. Because let's be
- 0:15honest, a lot of cabinets look expensive in photos
- 0:18and then feel very different once you open them.
- 0:22Joining me as always is Jessica. Jessica, where
- 0:25do you even start with a question like that?
- 0:27Hi Chris, I start with this. Luxury kitchen cabinets
- 0:31are defined less by the price tag than by how
- 0:33they're built and how they work every day. We're
- 0:36talking about a box that holds its shape, solid
- 0:39wood dovetail drawers on full extension glides,
- 0:43soft close hinges you can still adjust years
- 0:45from now, and a finish that still looks right
- 0:47after a decade of cooking. The look matters too,
- 0:50of course. But honestly, the look is the easiest
- 0:54part to fake. The easiest part to fake? I like
- 0:58that. So let's go piece by piece. What should
- 1:01people look at first? The box. That's the sides,
- 1:05the bottom, the back, and the shelves. And most
- 1:08of a cabinet's life depends on it. In American
- 1:11-framed cabinetry, furniture -grade plywood is
- 1:14the usual choice. It holds screws well. It stays
- 1:17stiff under heavy countertops. And it copes with
- 1:20the occasional leak under a sink better than
- 1:23standard particle board. Now, High -end European
- 1:27frameless cabinets often use a dense engineered
- 1:29board with thick edge banding instead. And when
- 1:32that's done well, it's durable too. So the real
- 1:36difference between budget and luxury is the grade
- 1:38of the material and how the edges and the back
- 1:40are finished. My tip is simple. Ask what the
- 1:44sides, back, and shelves are made of, and how
- 1:47thick they are. Okay, and then the drawers, because
- 1:49that's the part you touch every single day. Exactly.
- 1:53Pull a drawer all the way out. In a luxury cabinet,
- 1:57the drawer box is solid wood with dovetail joints
- 1:59at the corners, or it's a premium metal drawer
- 2:02system. And it rides on full extension undermount
- 2:05glides, so you can reach the very back without
- 2:07bending down and digging around. If you see stapled
- 2:11particle board drawer boxes or side -mounted
- 2:13roller glides, that's the clearest sign the cabinet
- 2:16was built to a price. And hinges? I feel like
- 2:19nobody thinks about hinges until a door starts
- 2:21sagging. Right. Look for concealed hinges with
- 2:25soft clothes built -in and with multi -way adjustment,
- 2:29so the doors can be realigned as the house settles.
- 2:32Name -brand European hardware, like Blum, is
- 2:35common in better cabinetry. And it's worth asking
- 2:38which hinge and glide models are used, because
- 2:40replacement parts matter years from now. What
- 2:44about the doors themselves and the finish? Five
- 2:46-piece doors should have solid wood frames, ideally
- 2:49joined with mortise and tenon construction, around
- 2:52a stable center panel. Slab doors on modern cabinets
- 2:56are usually MDF, which takes a smooth lacquer
- 2:59and gloss or matte better than solid wood does.
- 3:02And here's a trick. Check the finish on the door
- 3:05edges and on the back, not just the front. A
- 3:09luxury finish looks and feels consistent from
- 3:11every angle. Then open the doors and look inside.
- 3:15Better cabinets have a finished interior, edge
- 3:18banded adjustable shelves, and a full back panel.
- 3:21Here's a question I hear a lot. Framed or frameless?
- 3:25Is one of them more luxurious? Not by default.
- 3:28Framed cabinets have a solid wood face frame
- 3:30around the opening. They suit shaker, traditional,
- 3:34and transitional kitchens, and they add rigidity.
- 3:37Frameless, or European -style, cabinets drop
- 3:40the face frame, so the doors cover the box edge
- 3:42-to -edge, and you get wider drawers and more
- 3:45usable space inside. The right choice really
- 3:48follows the style of your kitchen. Okay, so let's
- 3:51say I'm standing in a showroom. Give me the quick
- 3:53version. How do I check quality without a spec
- 3:55sheet? Five minutes, six checks. One, open a
- 3:59drawer to the stop. It should extend fully. Carry
- 4:03a heavy pot without sagging and close itself
- 4:05softly after a gentle push. Two, look at the
- 4:09drawer corners. Interlocking dovetails means
- 4:12solid joinery. Staples or glue -only joints do
- 4:16not. Three, check an exposed side or a shelf
- 4:19edge. You want layered plywood or dense board
- 4:22with clean edge banding. Crumbly edges are a
- 4:25warning. Four, find the hinge adjustment screws.
- 4:31Five, run your hand along a door edge and look
- 4:33at the back of the door. The finish should feel
- 4:35just as smooth there as on the front. And six,
- 4:38ask for the warranty and writing and find out
- 4:40who stands behind it, the store or the manufacturer.
- 4:44I love that. Now the big worry with luxury cabinets
- 4:47is the weight. Custom cabinets can take forever.
- 4:50Is there a middle ground? There is. Custom cabinets
- 4:53are built to order from scratch, which is why
- 4:56lead times can run several months. Semi -custom
- 4:59manufacturers start from a set of standard box
- 5:01sizes, door styles, and finishes, and then let
- 5:04you choose and modify from there. The better
- 5:07semi -custom lines use the same construction
- 5:09methods you'd look for in custom work, so you
- 5:12get a luxury -grade build on a much shorter timeline.
- 5:15A good example is Fabuwood. which USA Cabinet
- 5:18Express carries as an authorized dealer. Walk
- 5:21us through the Fabuwood lines. Sure. Allure is
- 5:25Fabuwood's framed line, with door styles like
- 5:28Galaxy, Luna, Fusion, and Nexus. According to
- 5:32Fabuwood's current specs, Allure uses full overlay
- 5:35doors, with solid wood mortise and tenon frames
- 5:38on the wood frame styles. There's a half -inch
- 5:42veneered plywood box with the side panels dovetailed
- 5:45into a solid wood face frame. 3 quarter inch
- 5:48plywood shelves, and 5 eighths inch solid wood
- 5:51dovetail drawers on Bloom full extension soft
- 5:54close runners. The hinges are Bloom too. Soft
- 5:58close and six way adjustable. One honest note,
- 6:03Fabuwood's spec book says, lazy Susan, easy reach
- 6:06and pie cut cabinets don't have the soft close
- 6:09mechanism. So ask about your corners when you
- 6:12plan the layout. Good to know. And the frameless
- 6:15option? That's Illume. Fabuwood's frameless line
- 6:19for modern kitchens. It comes in the Catalina
- 6:22slab door and the Tuscany shaker door. Catalina
- 6:26has four signature finishes with standard lead
- 6:28times. Bianco gloss, Grigio gloss, Bianco matte
- 6:33and Carbone matte, plus a bigger palette of made
- 6:36-to -order designer colors. The box is engineered
- 6:39furniture board with Fabuwood's three -spine
- 6:41click construction and a white linen finished
- 6:43interior. The drawers run on Bloom's Marivobox
- 6:46metal system with full extension slides and soft
- 6:49close. And both Allure and Illum carry a limited
- 6:52lifetime warranty on qualifying cabinetry, subject
- 6:56to Fabuwood's written terms. So that's the build.
- 7:00Let's talk about what's inside. Which storage
- 7:03features are actually worth paying for? The ones
- 7:05you'll use every day. Full extension drawers
- 7:09are number one because they bring everything
- 7:11at the back into view. Then pull -outs and roll
- 7:14-out trays for pots, pans, and pantry items.
- 7:17Corner solutions because corners are usually
- 7:19wasted space. Adjustable drawer dividers so your
- 7:23utensils and dishware each have a place. And
- 7:26if you love the look, lit display cabinets with
- 7:29smoked glass, or an open pantry with LED backlighting,
- 7:33add a real high -end feel. Many of these are
- 7:36available as accessories for semi -custom lines,
- 7:39not just custom ones. And the big one. Are luxury
- 7:43kitchen cabinets worth the money? They usually
- 7:46are if you plan to stay in the home for years,
- 7:48because cabinets get daily use, and they're one
- 7:50of the most expensive parts of a kitchen to replace.
- 7:53Just spend in the right order. Box drawers and
- 7:56hardware first. A premium finish on a weak box
- 7:58won't last. Perfect. Give us the key takeaways.
- 8:02Luxury is mostly construction. Box material,
- 8:06drawer joinery, hardware and finish quality,
- 8:10solid wood dovetail drawers, Full extension soft
- 8:13-close glides and adjustable concealed hinges
- 8:15are the fastest signs of a well -built cabinet.
- 8:18Framed and frameless can both be luxury. Semi
- 8:21-custom lines can give you that build with much
- 8:23shorter lead times and by the storage features
- 8:26you'll actually use. Great stuff. If you want
- 8:29the full guide with the comparison tables and
- 8:31the showroom checklist, it's on usacabinetexpress
- 8:35.com. And honestly, the best test is in person.
- 8:39USA Cabinet Express has showrooms in Virginia,
- 8:42Texas, and Missouri where you can open the drawers,
- 8:45check the joinery and compare finishes, and their
- 8:47designers can put together a free 3D design of
- 8:50your kitchen. Thanks for listening to the Remodel
- 8:53Report. Thanks everyone. Go open some drawers.
- 8:56See you next time.
