- 0:05SPEAKER_03: What's up, everybody?
- 0:06SPEAKER_03: Welcome to yet another episode of the bottom line on sports.
- 0:10SPEAKER_03: He's Jeremy Pink.
- 0:11SPEAKER_03: I'm John John Taylor.
- 0:13SPEAKER_03: And this is our show about the intersection of sports and money.
- 0:18SPEAKER_03: And with that, we always like you to subscribe, rate, review.
- 0:22SPEAKER_03: As you know, we can use all the help we can get.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Five shows only.
- 0:26SPEAKER_03: Then you know we like to start every show with a number.
- 0:30SPEAKER_03: This year, this week, the number is six billion.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Six point seven billion.
- 0:36SPEAKER_03: I forgot the decimal.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: My bad.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: That's a seven, that's only$700 million.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, that's that's a fraction of your net worth.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: $6.7 billion is the franchise value for the Chelsea football club out of the English Premier League.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: And it was derived by the stake that Mark Walter sold when somebody else sold.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Uh Mark Walter sold his stake in Chelsea, which valued the company at$6.7 billion.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: And Mark Walter is the same guy who just divested his stake from the Los Angeles Lakers because of what appears to be some sort of fiscal malfeasance somewhere along the chain and uh throughout his companies.
- 1:17SPEAKER_03: So he sold the Lakers and he sold Chelsea.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but but the value the to me, the interesting thing is the valuation of Chelsea was 6.7 billion.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: And Chelsea is arguably one of, I mean, you you know soccer as well as anybody, but Chelsea, I would say, would be one of the top five most valuable franchises in the EPL.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: And I would say the EPL is by far and away the most uh, you know, is is the most valuable uh uh uh soccer league in the world.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: Now see, now you've got me intrigued.
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: You should Google it while I guess.
- 1:51SPEAKER_03: So I guess the top five.
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: It seems to me it's Manchester City.
- 1:57SPEAKER_03: I don't even think this is hard.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: Maybe I'll be wrong.
- 2:00SPEAKER_03: Okay, Manchester United.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: I think Liverpool.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: And I think Arsenal.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Those would be the Arsenal.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: And then Chelsea.
- 2:10SPEAKER_03: That would seem to be the top five to me.
- 2:12SPEAKER_03: If it's anything other, I'll be like, oh my god.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Let's see.
- 2:17SPEAKER_03: Maybe Tottenham would be up there.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: No, I don't think so.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be any my boys from Crystal Palace.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Oh, oh well okay.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: This looks like these are older numbers.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Um but I will I will look at because this is evaluating 6.7 billion, so Chelsea's not even Chelsea's sixth according to this.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Um you're right, Tottenham was five, but we were we were right on the first, we were right on the first four, which were um Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham, and then Chelsea.
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: All I know is y'all should be very impressed that we rattled it off with very little effort.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Well, as you know, I'm a dual British American citizen, lived in London for many years, so of course.
- 3:04SPEAKER_03: And you were close to Chelsea, right?
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: I I used to go to Chelsea Games, yeah.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: I I could walk.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, because it was a far walk, but I could uh yeah, I could uh yeah, I could go to Chelsea Games.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: I once saw I once saw Ernie Ells at a Chelsea game.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Isn't that exciting?
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Um but so so they sold Walter and another partner, another part of the consortium, and I can't recall his name, sold to Clear Lake Capital, and it's a private equity group that sold their stake.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: So Clear Lake Capital now has essentially uh majority ownership of Chelsea.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Uh and that's and that's not particularly interesting, except for the managing a managing partner of Clear Lake Capital is named Jose Feliciano.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Is he blind?
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: And I thought, is it is he related to the Jose Feliciano who wrote one of the most famous songs, one of the most famous holiday songs.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Do you know what it is?
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: No, I just know he's a blind guy with a guitar.
- 4:03SPEAKER_03: He wrote Feliz Navidad.
- 4:06SPEAKER_03: I should know that.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Feliz Seattle wrote Feliz Navidad, and more importantly, Feliz Navidad, but more importantly, he wrote this the theme song to Chico and the Man, a 1970 sitcom, which you may or may not remember with with Freddy Prince.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: Freddy Prince, there you go.
- 4:24SPEAKER_03: So why do you and Jack uh Jack Albertson, I think, right?
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: I was gonna say, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, so but in any case, all kind of random stuff going on.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: So that's uh and I think I think Feli, I think Jose Feliciano is a pretty common name, but I just thought, wow, he actually goes by Jose E.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Feliciano, which I think is probably to differentiate himself.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Um but but there's a couple things that are interesting about it.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: One is Walter clearly has to sell, either for financial reasons or other reasons he's been pressured to sell.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: Number two is it's more evidence of you know private equity and financial institutions involved in sports franchises.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Um and number three to me is that Chelsea's valuation is 6.7 billion and the Seattle Seahawks just sold for 9.6 billion.
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: So that lets you know what soccer is how soccer is rocking in Europe.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because right, right, because Chelsea is a you know is a top, this is looks like it's a sixth most valuable franchise.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: The Seahawks are probably you know somewhere about a third of the way down the line in the NFL.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: So uh so they're relatively comparable in terms of you know where they sit.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: Uh just just fascinating to me on a number of different levels.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: That's why 6.7 billion is our number.
- 5:41SPEAKER_03: Um, and let's move on to another number, which I found very interesting.
- 5:45SPEAKER_03: It's the highest paid coaches in the National Football League.
- 5:50SPEAKER_03: And uh, we're gonna attack this from a couple different ways because it's you know, we always like to bring the Dallas Cowboys into things.
- 5:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, uh, but the highest paid coaches right now in the NFL are making$20 million a year.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know where they are the top three who are making 20 million are Andy Reid, John Harbaugh, uh not Jim, but John, and Sean Payton.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: And this is according to a list that was done by Sportico, uh, which you know they they just published.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Um and so it's you know, those coaches have the uh most tenure in the NFL too as head coaches as well.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Um, and I think everything all those coaches are over age 60.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: So the the fourth highest paid coach is Sean McVeigh, and the fifth highest highest paid coach is Kyle Shanahan, but they're also two of the coaches that have the most tenure, even though they're much younger, have the most tenure as head coaches in the NFL.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: So what the list says to me is you either have to have been around a long time and are a little bit older, or you have to have to have been a head coach a long time, really, to get the big money these days.
- 7:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, um, and I'm really not surprised per se when you look at it, because it's hard to win in the NFL.
- 7:09SPEAKER_03: So when you get an established coach, you pay them because you don't want them go anywhere because it's hard to replace that guy.
- 7:15SPEAKER_03: Um, and when you look at um, and those guys all got Super Bowls too.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but the other thing, other things it's it's unlike quarterbacks, where you know the quarterbacks, you're gonna be the next highest paid one if you're at a certain level of quarterback, if you're in the top eight to ten.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: But you look at something like I was looking here, like Ben Johnson, who's arguably when he was hired, was probably the most sought-after head coach and candidate out there.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: He's he's at like uh you know 12th on the list, and he's at 13 million.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: So it just shows you that even if you're a new coach and you're highly sought after, you're not getting the same level as somebody who's been in the league a long time, which is sort of unlike it's it's unlike the quarterbacks to me.
- 7:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but he got 13 million, and he he'd never even been a head coach before.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: Well, that's what yeah, that's but that's because the mark, but what I'm saying is that the market for him was so hot at the time.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's why he got the 13 million, but he didn't even approach what the top coach no yeah no.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: Whereas like whereas like, well, Caleb Williams is a bad example, like like a like a Drake May or a Jaden Daniels, if he's negotiating his contract next year, they're gonna get the next highest top paid quarterback in the league.
- 8:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, especially now that Baker's been paid.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: Oh, especially Boy Baker.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: Boy, that's that looks like a bad deal, huh?
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: At least you have to get it.
- 8:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's um, you know, it's uh Sean Payton's got the Super Bowl, Sean McVay is at 19 million, he's got a Super Bowl.
- 8:42SPEAKER_03: Cal Shanahan's at 19 million.
- 8:44SPEAKER_03: Now he doesn't have a Super Bowl, but he's widely considered, you know, top three play caller offense coordinator.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: Who do you think if you had a if you were starting a franchise and not just for I mean, who do you who do you that's a that's a bad way to put it?
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: Who do you think the best coach in the NFL is?
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: Who do you think the top three coaches in the NFL are?
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Just overall, right now.
- 9:07SPEAKER_03: Um, I would say overall, right now, right now, top three coaches.
- 9:14SPEAKER_03: That's a great question because I didn't really considered it.
- 9:16SPEAKER_03: I'd say Andy Reid is definitely up there.
- 9:19SPEAKER_03: Uh he's probably number one to me because he's now won in a couple of different iterations.
- 9:25SPEAKER_03: Um I think Sean McVay is up there.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: Let's see, so far so far we're in agreement on the top two.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: I'm curious who you think.
- 9:34SPEAKER_03: Number three to me is a tough choice.
- 9:39SPEAKER_03: Um I would probably really say if I'm if I'm looking at all these names available, I'd probably go Sean Payton.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: Uh you know who I would go is number three, and I think Sean Payton would be possibly number three.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: I agree with you.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: I'd go Reed McVay, and I'd go Mike McDonald of Seattle.
- 9:59SPEAKER_03: I wouldn't be opposed to that.
- 10:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think uh the only reason I didn't have him in there is the same reason I didn't have Bob Ben Johnson in there.
- 10:07SPEAKER_03: You gotta have a little bit of longevity.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: I agree.
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: And the reason why I like uh Sean McVeigh is even Sean McVeigh is won in a couple different iterations, like they didn't get to the Super Bowl, but he's won with different types of teams.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Gone to the Super Bowl with two different quarterbacks.
- 10:22SPEAKER_03: Well, that's what I mean.
- 10:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, um, because that's the thing.
- 10:25SPEAKER_03: You can ride, and like you should say, well, hell, why how come John Harbaugh isn't up there?
- 10:30SPEAKER_03: And um I'd say he would be in the top five because he was consistently good, but he's he hadn't been able to get over the hump.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he won a suit, he won a very fluky Super Bowl.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: You know, to me, that was a very fluky Super Bowl run that they had.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: Um you know, just his his sort of you know, slightly above average quarterback became the best quarterback in the world for about a you know four-week period, which which happens, you know.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: Um but but yeah, I think um those those would be the top three.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: Like if I was starting a franchise, I would hire um Mike McDonald or Sean McVeigh.
- 11:06unknown: Right?
- 11:07SPEAKER_03: Okay, now on this list, if you if we if we look at it, and this list shows the top 15.
- 11:11SPEAKER_03: Just flip it around and go, of this of this 15, who are the most overpaid?
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: Oh, good question.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: Good question.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: Um I what do you wait?
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: I I have two that leap out immediately at me.
- 11:24SPEAKER_03: Kevin Stefanski leaps at me too immediately.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: He's at 15 million, and he is one, two, three, four, five, six.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: He's about seventh, yeah.
- 11:33SPEAKER_03: And uh Nick Siriani leaps out at me.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 11:37SPEAKER_03: Although the same, he always seems ready to implode, his team seems ready to implode.
- 11:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't really know how much he really does.
- 11:47SPEAKER_03: And then uh, you know, call me being I'm just being rude.
- 11:53SPEAKER_03: You know, Clint Kubiak seems overrated to me.
- 11:56SPEAKER_03: Like Clint Kubiak's done nothing really to get a hex.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: He's the 15th highest paid, yeah.
- 12:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's he's a Nepo baby.
- 12:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but he's approved otherwise.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: I I would I would also say uh uh Matt LaFleur.
- 12:10SPEAKER_03: I was going back and forth on him because they it's not like they don't win in Green Bay.
- 12:16SPEAKER_03: And he's been there eight years, I think.
- 12:19SPEAKER_03: But they haven't won.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: They haven't done anything.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, they've won, they've been in the playoffs, and they've won play.
- 12:27SPEAKER_03: I haven't looked this up at all.
- 12:28SPEAKER_03: So the cowboys won any playoff games?
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: I know the cowboys don't win any playoff games, but they've won a few playoff games.
- 12:35SPEAKER_03: That was an unnecessary shot.
- 12:37SPEAKER_03: It's unnecessary.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: Although they look they look really good this weekend, uh, especially the that's another unnecessary shot.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: Your defense was great this weekend.
- 12:44SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, because we're we're going to talk about that later at a later date.
- 12:49SPEAKER_03: Um, I will say this speaking about the Cowboys.
- 12:55SPEAKER_03: So Jerry Jones has a weekly radio show, shocking.
- 12:59SPEAKER_03: And on that radio show this week, and I'm gonna paraphrase it, somebody said, uh, what did you think when the Giants hired John Harbaugh?
- 13:11SPEAKER_03: Oh, good question.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: And he said, Oh, I was shaking in my boots because I knew he was a terrific coach.
- 13:19SPEAKER_03: And I heard that as I was driving back from the gym.
- 13:23SPEAKER_03: And all I could think of was so the Giants hired a coach that had you shaking in your boots, thinking, wow, he's gonna get them turned around playing a certain kind of football.
- 13:38SPEAKER_03: And respectfully, you hired a coach where everybody's like, so that's the best you can do.
- 13:45SPEAKER_03: Like, that's the guy.
- 13:47SPEAKER_03: And then you look on this list of highest paid coaches, and Brian Schadenheimer is nowhere to be found.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: Shoddy is not even on the list.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 13:55SPEAKER_03: I guarantee you, Brian Schadenheimer.
- 13:58SPEAKER_03: Now, I don't have I haven't seen his contract for obvious reasons.
- 14:03SPEAKER_03: Then they're not about to promote that, right?
- 14:05SPEAKER_03: And while he seems to be a very nice guy, I guarantee you he's a bottom five NFL paid coach.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:13SPEAKER_03: Um, and so there's always this thing where Jerry really does want to win, he'll do a lot of things to win, but what he won't do is do what's required to give a coach like a John Harbaugh, like a Sean Payton, like a Sean McVay, like a Ben Johnson, control of the organization to run it.
- 14:33SPEAKER_03: And since you won't do that, and that's your right as your team owner not to do that, you're always going to get a coach that's a lower tier.
- 14:42SPEAKER_03: And the only way you get a coach that's a higher tier is if you just get lucky.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 14:48SPEAKER_03: I mean, like, you know, because the coaches that have proven to be successful or their young hot shots with the most potential, all their mentors have said, hey Jeremy, they offer you this job.
- 15:02SPEAKER_03: Make sure you get control of the roster, of course, control of this.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 15:06SPEAKER_03: Don't take it if you don't get it.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: Well, also, and also you can't be a bigger public face than Jerry either.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: You know, you can't take away the spotlight from Jerry.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: And that's part, and those are part and parcel.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: Those are those, you know, go hand in hand.
- 15:21SPEAKER_03: As much as he wants to win, he also wants the credit.
- 15:23SPEAKER_03: Of course.
- 15:24SPEAKER_03: He wants the credit, he needs the credit, he craves the credit, and uh that's why they've all hired a certain, that's why he's consistently hired a certain type of coach outside of Bill Parcells.
- 15:36SPEAKER_03: And the only reason, the only reason he hired Bill Parcells is because he was trying to get that new ATT stadium passed.
- 15:44SPEAKER_03: They needed a bond to pass the stadium, and he figured a coach like Parcells would give him the credibility to get the stadium bond passed so he could get a new stadium, and they might win in the process.
- 15:56SPEAKER_03: And then uh I remember when Bill left and Jerry, I'm paraphrasing again, but the bottom line was well, I didn't have a whole lot of fun the last couple years, you know, and I'm going to, you know, go back and do it my way.
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: So uh, and so I'm not surprised that Brian Schottenheimer is not on the top 15 highest paid coaches in the league.
- 16:21SPEAKER_03: And and again, when a guy like Harbaugh, you know, wanted all that control in New York, uh, basically the Giants said, you know, sometimes, man, when you're dealing with people, we've all got uh, you know, you got your uh your everybody's got a black sheep in a family sometimes.
- 16:40SPEAKER_03: And they'll say, and then sometimes that person will turn their life around and they'll go, Well, what happened, Jacques?
- 16:47SPEAKER_03: Hey, what happened to you?
- 16:48SPEAKER_03: Hey man, I got sick and tired of being sick and tired.
- 16:50SPEAKER_03: I decided to, I need to do X, Y, and Z to get my life together.
- 16:54SPEAKER_03: That was the Giants.
- 16:55SPEAKER_03: They were sick and tired of being sick and tired of being a raggedy franchise, and they're like, Okay, Harbaugh, you've won Super Bowl, you got a Super Bowl, you're in the playoffs every year, you play a certain style.
- 17:06SPEAKER_03: Okay, fine.
- 17:07SPEAKER_03: What you what you want, man?
- 17:08SPEAKER_03: What you want?
- 17:09SPEAKER_03: So this, this, this, this, and this.
- 17:11SPEAKER_03: Okay, fine.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: I I so so my take on so my take on John Harbaugh is, and I think that's a that's a reasonable take.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: My take on John Harbaugh is a little bit different, which is that um this will work for a couple of weeks.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: I think he's far more likely to go the route of Pete Carroll last year than he is to go the route of Andy Reid, if you ask me.
- 17:35SPEAKER_03: Okay, I got two points.
- 17:36SPEAKER_03: Number one, why do you say that?
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: Uh I I think the last few years that he was with the Ravens, uh you could you could see he had the most arguably, you know, some of the most one of the best rosters in the league.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: Uh he they couldn't hold on to leads.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: Uh it clearly was a locker room that I thought was uh the locker room didn't seem cohesive to me.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: Uh I thought they were underperforming with the talent that they had.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: And I thought they had the best quarterback in the league for a few years, you know, or certainly one of the two best quarterbacks in the league for three best quarterbacks in the league for a few years, and they drastically underperformed.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: He had a terrible relationship with him.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: That's the first point.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: The second point I would say is if they try to play that style of football that they played on Sunday night, they'll be, they'll, the entire team will be injured, or, or it's not, it's not a long-term, they're they're not going to be able to play that kind of football for 18 weeks.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: And if you need to play that kind of football to win, uh I think that that that's gonna be that's gonna be a problem.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: And the third thing is there was so much hype and so much expectation and so much excitement around it that of course this is a likely scenario for game one.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: So I would say week one is always a week of, as we all know, is a week of overreaction.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: And I think there's a tremendous amount of overreaction toward the Giants.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: And I think if you recall, the Raiders beat the Patriots in week one last year.
- 19:07SPEAKER_03: So yes, sir, I do that.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: So anyway, that's sort of my theory.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: I could be wrong, but that's kind of that's kind of, and I've thought that for a long time.
- 19:15SPEAKER_03: So I was just curious, uh, and asked a couple of friends of mine.
- 19:19SPEAKER_03: He was very combative with the media this week.
- 19:22SPEAKER_03: And I was just like, has he always been was he like that in Baltimore?
- 19:26SPEAKER_03: Or is he trying to set a new tone in the Giants?
- 19:29SPEAKER_03: Uh you know, trying to, you know, set a create an all-business um, you know, culture, attitude, whatever you want to call it, in New York.
- 19:39SPEAKER_03: Have you got a sense either way?
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I mean, I think he's been so I think he had some bizarre kind of he had some sort of bizarre stuff that he was doing in team meetings over the summer, yeah, which he got a tremendous amount of criticism for.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: And people were kind of going, dude, what what is up with you?
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: Why are you behaving this way?
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: So I think I think this is an overreaction to that, plus a sort of, I told you so.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: See, look what I do with did with this team, and it's only week one.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: So I told you guys so.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: You know, so I think it was more an overreaction and almost an admonishment of the of the media here.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: That would be my read of it.
- 20:20SPEAKER_03: No worries, I was I was just curious.
- 20:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:23SPEAKER_03: Uh, because he seemed somewhat likable in Baltimore, but it seemed like a complete uh seven-letter cuss word in New York.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: So I was yeah, I don't think I don't think he's that.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: I I really I don't think he's that at all.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: I just think it's you know, it's also, you know, the Baltimore media market and the New York media market are very, very different.
- 20:39SPEAKER_03: Well, I can see that.
- 20:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I imagine that.
- 20:42SPEAKER_03: So bottom line for me, man, uh the highest paying coaches in the NFL pretty much deserve it.
- 20:47SPEAKER_03: They've all got Super Bowl rings and they've all proven they can they can they got staying power, and that's what you need.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but but but bottom bottom line for me, it looks like uh experience pays uh if you're a coach in the NFL, and that makes a tremendous amount of sense because you're your coaches are CEOs in the NFL, they're not just you know coaches, they are have a take on a far greater role, and experience probably matters.
- 21:12SPEAKER_03: All right, so check this out.
- 21:13SPEAKER_03: I spent the weekend in Phoenix with my father celebrating his birthday.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: Oh, how how old is your dad?
- 21:22SPEAKER_03: Well, he doesn't like that number out there publicly.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: Is it is it yeah, okay.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 21:27SPEAKER_03: That that way I didn't say it, uh-huh.
- 21:29SPEAKER_03: But y'all saw it.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 21:32SPEAKER_03: So, uh, but he's in great shape, works out three or four times a week.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 21:37SPEAKER_03: Um, so uh but but um I was out there with my in Phoenix with my son, my dad, my brother, and uh I wore some Jordan 11s with the snake with the fake snake skin on them.
- 21:52SPEAKER_03: They were pretty sharp.
- 21:54SPEAKER_03: And when I picked my son up from the airport in Phoenix, he had on cherry red Jordan 11.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: And you ask, why do we even care what your shoe wear was?
- 22:03SPEAKER_03: Well, we're about to talk about Jordan tonike.
- 22:06SPEAKER_03: I did that, and so Nike is not just satisfied with having Jordans and Jordan gear, they now want Jordan strength training gear.
- 22:16SPEAKER_03: And I find they call it a Jordan strength, and I find it interesting because as a guy who's worked out a lot over the last 25 to 30 years.
- 22:26SPEAKER_03: Sometimes you can tell, sometimes you can't.
- 22:28SPEAKER_03: But I've spent a lot of time in the gym.
- 22:31SPEAKER_03: And I gotta tell you, man, I'll wear some Jordan shoes sometimes.
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: I definitely will wear some Jordan shorts.
- 22:39SPEAKER_03: I've had some Jordan sleeveless hoodies I used to work out with.
- 22:43SPEAKER_03: One black, one red.
- 22:46SPEAKER_03: I gotta tell you, bro, I like Jordan.
- 22:49SPEAKER_03: I got no desire to buy some Jordan dumbbells, some Jordan kettlebells.
- 22:57SPEAKER_03: You know, await to wait to wait to wait to wait to me.
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: Um now, do you think I'm going to be in a minority?
- 23:04SPEAKER_03: Or do you think uh people will go gung-ho for the Jordan strength gear?
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: I I I don't uh I don't think it's a so I look at it from a purely business perspective.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: The Jordan brand within the Nike world right now is really the only brand that seems to kind of be holding up and performing well.
- 23:23SPEAKER_00: So so Nike's probably saying, okay, how do we use yeah, how do we leverage a Jordan brand?
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: And the way to do it, they thought is with this equipment.
- 23:33SPEAKER_03: Like okay, maybe from a business standpoint, maybe for me, the most weights you ever see are like in gyms.
- 23:44SPEAKER_03: So unless they get commercial deals, like I don't think a private citizen walking around with getting that stuff.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't think the category is big enough for or maybe for it to make it to make a difference, or maybe they're trying to expand the category.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 23:59SPEAKER_03: Well, what about this?
- 24:00SPEAKER_03: Maybe they're trying to maybe they are doing what I said, except they're taking it to the next step.
- 24:05SPEAKER_03: Like, let's let's do this because we know it's true.
- 24:09SPEAKER_03: Like, Michigan is a is a jump man program, Jordan program.
- 24:14SPEAKER_03: Maybe they maybe they ask Michigan, hey, swap out all your weights in your weight room and use our stuff.
- 24:21SPEAKER_03: And uh maybe there's a few schools around here who are jump man programs who do that or basketball programs, and they try to get into that world.
- 24:30SPEAKER_03: But that doesn't seem like enough money to uh yeah.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: Can you sell how many times can you you you can sell a shoe in theory once a year?
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: How many times can you sell a weight?
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: Like like 10 kilos is 10 kilos, you know.
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 24:40SPEAKER_03: I don't know the way I throw them around.
- 24:42SPEAKER_03: You might be able to just sell a couple times.
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, you know, but but you know, but that's different because you know, weights under five pounds and less are easy to, you know, uh easy to throw around and break.
- 24:51SPEAKER_00: You know, I understand that.
- 24:53SPEAKER_03: So I don't know what they're doing, bro.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: I I don't either.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: I think this is a you know, we we kind of talked about this briefly earlier, uh, you know, uh off uh before the podcast.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: I I think that Nike used to be kind of this cool, you know, this cool brand, and I think Jordan is, you know, an offshoot of you know is in the Nike family, and it was all seemed to be a very cool brand.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: I think the brand is aging.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: And I think you see that in like I, you know, if you watch the U.S.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: Open at all, I think you saw that with the US Open where you had a lot of new balance in there, you had a lot of on-running in there, you even had, you know, ASICs in there.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: You had you certainly still had Nike and you certainly still had Adidas, but it's a very different prop brand proposition to you know people in their teens and 20s now than it was, you know, when you and I were growing up.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: And I think that this is this is a way to try to figure out to your, I think you said it right, is how do you leverage a Jordan brand, which still is the one that carries more cachet than the Nike brand, I think, at this point.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: And maybe they think this is a way to leverage it.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: I I look back on like Tiger Woods used to have a a line of Nike golf clubs that kind of quietly went away and didn't seem to have that much of an impact on anybody when it went away.
- 26:07SPEAKER_03: Well, it's it's weird.
- 26:08SPEAKER_03: I know Nike had a golf ball that had some success, but maybe the problem with golf clubs is you thought they were gonna help you play with play like Tiger, but you you still had a Nike handicap when you used them.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: So you're like dude, if I had a 19 handicap, I would be so happy.
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: You have no idea.
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: But uh, but I but you're right, you're right.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: And and also you you also don't buy golf clubs, you know.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: How often do you buy golf clubs once every three to five years, maybe if you play a lot, you know?
- 26:35SPEAKER_03: So I don't know.
- 26:37SPEAKER_03: I I just find it strange.
- 26:39SPEAKER_03: Why do you think Nike, well, I mean, you touched on a little bit.
- 26:42SPEAKER_03: I think it seems like um I'm just shocked whenever I see that Nike's stock is plummeting.
- 26:48SPEAKER_03: Because when I was when I was, you know, even 20 years ago, 30 years ago, I just couldn't imagine Nike would ever not be the shoe of choice.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: And I think they they're still extremely popular, and I still think they have the highest you know market share, but but they don't have the same sort of cachet that they used to have.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: You know, they're also not setting, you know, again, I know little about fashion, but but Nike used to set all the fashion trends in shoes, and I don't believe they do that anymore.
- 27:15SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know, you know, I did I did talk to somebody about that.
- 27:19SPEAKER_03: It's kind of an offshoot conversation a couple weeks ago, and their point was kids aren't wearing basketball shoes anymore, like the way we used to wear them around class and school.
- 27:33SPEAKER_03: They've now gotten into more designer shoes or comfort shoes.
- 27:39SPEAKER_03: It's but they're just not wearing basketball shoes like they used to, which is why you see so few players in the NBA with with their own shoe lines now, because only a certain couple of guys can really sell a shoe.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: But but also, you know, you know what I also think it is.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: I hadn't really thought about this until you brought it up.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: Uh, basketball shoes are no really no longer high tops when they they used to be high tops, and then they they was a that was a very differentiated look from most other you know tennis shoes or other athletic shoes.
- 28:09SPEAKER_00: So I think maybe as the basketball shoe market has gone more and more to low tops, and it started too with it really started moving in that direction with Kobe and KD about you know 10, 15 years ago.
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: And now it's right, I would say it's probably about 80 to 90 percent of the market now.
- 28:23SPEAKER_00: Um, maybe that sort of created less of a differentiation between basketball shoes and other shoes and allowed allowed some of these other you know uh other types of shoes to encroach on you know Nike's market share among you know kids who are wearing basketball shoes as you know, but not to play basketball.
- 28:39SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 28:41SPEAKER_03: Uh it's a it's an interesting question, driven more interesting because like I said, uh they're going to the Nike strength.
- 28:49SPEAKER_03: It's it'll be interesting to see what happens.
- 28:51SPEAKER_03: I just can't see a world where kettlebells with Jordan's jump man image I totally agree stamped all over in every gym in America.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: It just seems, unless there's a larger strategy that we don't see, which there very well could be, it just seems like a seems desperate.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: It seems like a brand desperate, or seems like a brand extension that would not be my first choice as a brand extension.
- 29:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 29:15SPEAKER_03: Uh so bottom line for me, if you ever come across a Jordan Waits in the gym, take a picture and send them to your boy.
- 29:22SPEAKER_03: Hit me up on social media and send it to me because I want to get it, I want to get a lift in.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, but bottom line for me, I'll be on the lookout for the Jordan Waits in the gym.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: I don't think we'll see them very, very soon or or very often, but you never know.
- 29:35SPEAKER_03: All right, man.
- 29:36SPEAKER_03: Let's man up.
- 29:38SPEAKER_03: Discuss the debacle that was Ohio State's 24-23 loss to Texas.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:44SPEAKER_03: I have a question for you.
- 29:45SPEAKER_03: I've been arguing.
- 29:46SPEAKER_03: I've argued.
- 29:47SPEAKER_03: Well, let me not let me rephrase that.
- 29:49SPEAKER_03: I've had a conversation with my father about this.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 29:53SPEAKER_03: I had a conversation with a highly successful local high school football coach about this.
- 30:00SPEAKER_03: And I'm I'm going to now we're going to have this discussion.
- 30:04SPEAKER_03: Um, because okay, let me not let me not tank the question.
- 30:08SPEAKER_03: Do you believe Ryan Day was too conservative in the second half against Texas?
- 30:15SPEAKER_03: And that is why they lost.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: So I I I believe that he was too conservative in the second half, yes.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: Is that why they lost?
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: No.
- 30:28SPEAKER_03: Okay, see, yeah.
- 30:30SPEAKER_03: I looked at, and I haven't done the whole play-by-play, but I was talking to my dad, uh, who taught at Ohio State, which is why I ended up at Ohio State.
- 30:39SPEAKER_03: So when he roots for a program, he roots for Ohio State.
- 30:42SPEAKER_03: Uh so that also means he's a fan, which means he can be irrational at times.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: Um like Ohio State fans in general, right?
- 30:51SPEAKER_03: You know, and what I do as a sports journalist, and what I've done my whole my entire career is I don't look for the obvious answer.
- 30:58SPEAKER_03: They weren't conservative, that's why they lost.
- 31:00SPEAKER_03: That's a very obvious answer.
- 31:02SPEAKER_03: And so when I when my dad was going back and forth with me, I said, Dad, the score is 20, uh, 23.
- 31:11SPEAKER_03: No, it's 20 to 3.
- 31:12SPEAKER_03: It's the third quarter.
- 31:14SPEAKER_03: They're right, they've got Devin McEwen, I think that's his name, wide open in the middle of the field.
- 31:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and Julian saying overthrow.
- 31:22SPEAKER_00: I agree.
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: Huge, maybe the most important play of the game.
- 31:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, it was.
- 31:27SPEAKER_03: I said, was that conservative, or did the quarterback just miss a wide open throw?
- 31:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because they're not coming back from 27 to 3.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: They're not, you know, because it's four possessions, yeah.
- 31:40SPEAKER_03: And it's such a mental game.
- 31:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, in 27 to 3, you go, wow, they came to our house and kicked our behind.
- 31:48SPEAKER_03: In 23 to 3, you go, you know, if we can just score once, we might be able to make something happen.
- 31:55SPEAKER_03: That you still got hope.
- 31:57SPEAKER_03: So I didn't think they were conservative there.
- 32:00SPEAKER_03: Um, then if there's another, I think it was a first down throw.
- 32:03SPEAKER_03: Jeremiah Smith is open on a post and throws it behind him.
- 32:07SPEAKER_00: Throws it behind him, yeah.
- 32:08SPEAKER_03: And again, that's not a conservative play.
- 32:10SPEAKER_03: That's like a 17-yard gain on first down or second down.
- 32:13SPEAKER_03: If you complete what should be a very simple pass because he was wide open.
- 32:18SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, so and then at the end of the day, it's a uh 23-17 lead.
- 32:27SPEAKER_03: They complete a couple of a pass, a long pass, they have a pass interference, and then on third and four, they throw for the end zone.
- 32:38SPEAKER_03: That to me doesn't say the conservative players, let's try to pick up this first down with a little five-yard mesh route and see if we can get somebody open.
- 32:46SPEAKER_03: They went for the home run in the jugular with that.
- 32:48SPEAKER_03: So it does it doesn't really feel conservative to me.
- 32:51SPEAKER_03: Um, it feels like let me ask you this way, then.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 33:09SPEAKER_03: See, I don't really think so.
- 33:10SPEAKER_03: I I have my opinion.
- 33:11SPEAKER_03: I do.
- 33:12SPEAKER_00: I do.
- 33:13SPEAKER_03: Um, I'm gonna go, I I like to look at, but like I would tell you there were plays like the like um I had one, I had a couple issues with like one play.
- 33:27SPEAKER_03: And this is me being the way I look at a game.
- 33:30SPEAKER_03: Like for me, the entire game, they had success running guard, center guard.
- 33:35SPEAKER_03: They had very little success outside the guards.
- 33:39SPEAKER_03: And so on that drive where they missed the field goal, they would have clenched the game because they're not coming back from 26-17.
- 33:48SPEAKER_01: I agree with that too.
- 33:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they get seven yards between the tackles on first down.
- 33:54SPEAKER_03: They've been making yardage three, four, five, six between the guards all day.
- 34:01SPEAKER_03: On second and three, they went off tackle and lost three yards.
- 34:04SPEAKER_03: And I was just like, bro.
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's where uh uh what's the that's where Bo Jackson got the the pushed out to the Whiteside.
- 34:14SPEAKER_03: Like, bro, you haven't made a yard outside the guards, yeah.
- 34:18SPEAKER_03: The entire and so that said that took it from short yardage to long yardage.
- 34:23SPEAKER_03: That's when you end up throwing to Jeremiah Smith, yeah, and you miss a field goal that you're supposed to make.
- 34:28SPEAKER_03: Right so um, but in general, I put this game really like any other game that I've ever seen played.
- 34:41SPEAKER_03: In the first half, we caught every break.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 34:44SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 34:45SPEAKER_03: In the second half, Texas caught every break.
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: I totally agree with that.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:49SPEAKER_03: And so for me, I used to do this thing.
- 34:53SPEAKER_03: Uh the games are on Sunday.
- 34:56SPEAKER_03: I used to do it Tuesday for Wednesday's paper.
- 34:58SPEAKER_03: It was five plays.
- 35:00SPEAKER_03: Uh, you might have missed because they weren't huge at the time.
- 35:04SPEAKER_03: And you go back and look at them and you go, oh wow.
- 35:07SPEAKER_03: And you know, you can go back and look at the second half, the muff fumble where it hits number 21 in the shoulder.
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: Oh, they had two fumbles, they should recover.
- 35:16SPEAKER_03: In the second one, they made a they forced a fumble, which is a good play.
- 35:19SPEAKER_03: Uh-huh.
- 35:19SPEAKER_03: And Texas got lucky and fell on it.
- 35:21SPEAKER_03: Then that's what I mean.
- 35:22SPEAKER_03: You got the Jeremiah Smith where he throws it behind him.
- 35:25SPEAKER_03: You got Jeremiah Smith misses a third down catch.
- 35:28SPEAKER_03: So they didn't in the first half, they made a lot of plays.
- 35:32SPEAKER_03: And in the second half, they didn't make enough plays, and they didn't have any pass rush because this is not hate.
- 35:40SPEAKER_03: This is not slander.
- 35:41SPEAKER_03: I give them credit because they came back and won.
- 35:45SPEAKER_03: Uh, but you know, Arch Arch Arch Manning is still just a guy.
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I agree.
- 35:51SPEAKER_03: Look, look, I think he made a great play on the fourth down where he ran this way and threw it across.
- 35:56SPEAKER_03: He did that was that was probably his best play of the game, but I I remain unimpressed in general.
- 36:02SPEAKER_00: I so I think the issue with Ohio State, who's now lost three of their last four games, and they've lost three of their last four games the exact same way, which is well, for two reasons.
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: Well, for a number of reasons.
- 36:15SPEAKER_00: But number one is that they needed to make a defensive stand at the end of the game.
- 36:20SPEAKER_02: They couldn't.
- 36:21SPEAKER_00: They couldn't.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: And they missed an easy kick both times.
- 36:26SPEAKER_00: That's and that's why Ohio State's lost three of their last four games.
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: Had they been able to make a kick, had they been able to make a fourth quarter stand, I think they would have won all of these games.
- 36:35SPEAKER_00: Uh but what I think what I think is if you listen to Ryan Day talk, he was talking about how critical the fourth quarter is.
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: And that was a whole mantra for the whole summer and going into the season, we have to own the fourth quarter.
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: And he was right, and he is right, because that's had they done, had they played even halfway how they played in the you know first half in the fourth quarter, they would have won that game easily.
- 37:02SPEAKER_00: You know?
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: Um, the only game in the last year, they've lost three games.
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: The only game where I really thought they got pushed around was against Miami.
- 37:12SPEAKER_00: They should beat, they should have beaten Indiana relatively easily.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: They should have beaten Texas relatively easily, and they didn't.
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: And then that and that's a function of there's a certain level of tightness that happens in the fourth quarter.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: So maybe conservative isn't the word, but there's a level of tightness.
- 37:28SPEAKER_00: Well, the tight the tightness is a reflection, I think, of a conservative play caller or some or a conservative coach who doesn't quite trust his team at this point.
- 37:37SPEAKER_00: That's what I think.
- 37:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I I like to make it, I like it simpler than that.
- 37:43SPEAKER_03: I think I'm and I'm not disagreeing with that because I think a lot of that is salient.
- 37:47SPEAKER_03: But at Ohio State and at programs like Ohio State, uh, and we saw it last year, and so you know, it's and I talk about it all the time when I'm watching a game.
- 37:58SPEAKER_03: I'd my son be laughing.
- 38:00SPEAKER_03: I was like, hey dog, somebody gotta go make a play.
- 38:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's right.
- 38:03SPEAKER_03: The game is always about making plays.
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: There's it's it's like five plays, three to five plays in a game determine the game.
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: Of teams that are basically, you know, equivalent talent.
- 38:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know, and when they won a championship, what'd they do?
- 38:16SPEAKER_03: They found a way to make plays and win in time.
- 38:21SPEAKER_03: You know, whether it's Will Howard, whether it's uh coming off the edge.
- 38:27SPEAKER_00: But they kicked they kicked the field goal against Notre Dame when it went from eight points to 11.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: That was the end of the game.
- 38:33SPEAKER_00: You know?
- 38:34SPEAKER_00: So the end of the game wasn't here.
- 38:36SPEAKER_03: It just was it just say a lot of things.
- 38:37SPEAKER_03: At the end of the day, you gotta have some guys on your team who go make plays.
- 38:43SPEAKER_00: So so what what college football team is favored to win the national title right now after the Ohio State Texas laws?
- 38:50SPEAKER_00: What college team is favored to win the national title?
- 38:56SPEAKER_03: Notre Dame.
- 38:58SPEAKER_03: Ohio State.
- 39:01SPEAKER_03: Um I like the way we play it in general.
- 39:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 39:05SPEAKER_03: Um and so it'll be interesting to see what what their improvement level is over the next few weeks.
- 39:14SPEAKER_03: Um but you know, it's all because of the new system, it's all about building and getting better and playing your best football at the end of the season.
- 39:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think.
- 39:24SPEAKER_03: You just gotta get to the tournament.
- 39:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, this this long.
- 39:26SPEAKER_03: You're always going to get the benefit three games.
- 39:33SPEAKER_03: And if they lost once on the road to Texas and lost by a field goal to somebody else, and a touchdown on the road to somebody else, they're still getting the tournament.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: You know, you know, then it's just a matter of this season's setting up to me in to be very similar to last season.
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: Because if you remember when Ohio State started last season, they were like, oh my gosh, their schedule is gonna be so difficult.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: They got to play at Penn State, they gotta play here.
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: And one by one, a lot of the teams that you thought were good weren't particularly good, you know.
- 40:06SPEAKER_00: And I think that you know, if you look at Ohio State's schedule now, you know, maybe maybe I think Indiana looks, but again, it's hard to tell if Indiana hasn't played anybody.
- 40:15SPEAKER_00: So you don't know.
- 40:18SPEAKER_00: I do too.
- 40:18SPEAKER_03: I but I I don't think we'll have a more difficult game than Texas going into Austin.
- 40:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I so if you so they should look at it as players, like screw what the coaches think.
- 40:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but the players should be like, we went down to Austin and basically whooped their ass for three quarters, and then we let it get away from us.
- 40:40SPEAKER_03: There's we won't find a more difficult environment to start a game of play.
- 40:45SPEAKER_03: So we straight, we just need to do what we do.
- 40:48SPEAKER_00: I I agree.
- 40:49SPEAKER_03: And I it's easy for me to say that.
- 40:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, no, no, of course, of course.
- 40:52SPEAKER_00: But but you look at like you know, USC as much as I love USC, you know, they're my second favorite team, they don't have a defense, you know.
- 40:59SPEAKER_00: They they just they don't have a defense.
- 41:00SPEAKER_00: So Ohio State's not gonna have an issue with USC.
- 41:03SPEAKER_00: Oregon looks like they're just not very good this year, you know.
- 41:07SPEAKER_03: Well, I don't know.
- 41:08SPEAKER_03: They've been tipping their plays, and so I really need to see what advantage they gave their first two opponents.
- 41:15SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 41:16SPEAKER_03: Uh I tell you what, I was I was it's Texas.
- 41:21SPEAKER_03: And so Texas is really good.
- 41:23SPEAKER_03: Uh I thought the offensive line was not great, but they held up better than I thought they would.
- 41:28SPEAKER_03: And so who's who do you think's a better team?
- 41:30SPEAKER_00: Ohio State or Texas?
- 41:31SPEAKER_00: Who do you think's a better team, Ohio State or Texas?
- 41:35SPEAKER_00: I don't even think it's that close.
- 41:36SPEAKER_00: I think Ohio State's a better team.
- 41:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't I don't know.
- 41:40SPEAKER_03: And the reason I say that is I think they're pretty even.
- 41:44SPEAKER_03: And the reason I say that is if we're objective about the first half, they dropped a wide open touchdown pass.
- 41:51SPEAKER_03: And they had that fluky play where they catch a interception pass, dude hits the ground, that drive in general should turn into a touchdown.
- 42:00SPEAKER_03: And so if those two normal plays just happen the way they should happen, you know, it's either a uh 14-14 or 14-13, 13, 12, 10 games ahead of time.
- 42:13SPEAKER_03: And so then the lead never been.
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: But but again, you can also say that those those fluky kind of plays balanced out in the second half, too.
- 42:20SPEAKER_00: They had two fumbles that they should have lost that they managed to recover.
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: And Ohio State had two wide, had a wide open touchdown and a wide open pass to Jeremiah Smith, which they blew too.
- 42:31SPEAKER_00: So I I agree, I agree with you.
- 42:33SPEAKER_00: Um, but I I think that uh um yeah, so so I I don't I actually don't think there's a really dominant team in college football this year.
- 42:43SPEAKER_00: I just don't, from what I've seen in the leagues.
- 42:45SPEAKER_03: I'm interested to see about the league.
- 42:47SPEAKER_03: Uh they haven't played anybody yet, uh, but I think they're really good.
- 42:51SPEAKER_00: Uh I agree with that.
- 42:52SPEAKER_00: I agree, I agree with that.
- 42:53SPEAKER_00: I think I don't think Notre Dame is gonna be, I think Notre Dame is a very easy schedule.
- 42:58SPEAKER_03: Um I think that we won't know about them for the playoffs.
- 43:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think the two teams that are definitely gonna make the playoffs are gonna be Indiana and Notre Dame because their schedules are they don't they don't they don't have schedules, you know.
- 43:08SPEAKER_00: Um so they'll both make the playoffs.
- 43:10SPEAKER_00: Um I think they both might be pretty good, you know.
- 43:12SPEAKER_00: I I agree with you.
- 43:13SPEAKER_00: I think Miami, I think Miami's a team.
- 43:15SPEAKER_00: It's hard to tell about Georgia right now if they're any good.
- 43:18SPEAKER_00: I I can't tell.
- 43:19SPEAKER_03: No, but we'll know about them by the by the time the SEC season is over.
- 43:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:22SPEAKER_03: We'll know we'll know we'll know more about Texas.
- 43:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but I'm still not sold on Arch.
- 43:28SPEAKER_00: No, are you sold on uh Julian Saiyan?
- 43:31SPEAKER_03: No.
- 43:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 43:33SPEAKER_00: And here's why.
- 43:35SPEAKER_00: If you had to pick one of the two, who do you pick?
- 43:36SPEAKER_00: Who do you pick, Julian Saiyan or Arch?
- 43:38SPEAKER_03: I pick Saiyan over Arch.
- 43:40SPEAKER_00: Okay, so would I.
- 43:41SPEAKER_03: But I'm sure if you're in Texas, you pick Arch over Saiyan.
- 43:45SPEAKER_03: Uh but uh the problem with Saiyan is we've seen a lot of really outstanding college quarterbacks come through Ohio State.
- 43:57SPEAKER_03: They all make that throw.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: The one that the wide open dude is does JT Barrett miss that throw?
- 44:04SPEAKER_00: No chance.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: Hell no.
- 44:07SPEAKER_00: JT Barrett wins that game.
- 44:09SPEAKER_00: JT.
- 44:10SPEAKER_00: JT if JT Barrett's a quarterback, Ohio State wins that game by three scores, right?
- 44:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:15SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 44:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 44:16SPEAKER_03: So but that I mean, so you know, but that's what it is.
- 44:20SPEAKER_03: And so Julie Sand is good.
- 44:22SPEAKER_03: I mean, he's a good quarterback.
- 44:23SPEAKER_03: Very good, yeah.
- 44:24SPEAKER_03: But he hadn't proved to be that dude yet.
- 44:28SPEAKER_01: He's not.
- 44:31SPEAKER_03: You got to be that dude.
- 44:32SPEAKER_03: And you can be that, you can become that dude because it's based off a demonstrated ability.
- 44:38SPEAKER_03: You gotta, he'll have their schedule is such he will have additional moments to make plays.
- 44:44SPEAKER_03: You know, look at Will Howard.
- 44:46SPEAKER_03: Will Howard had that brain fart against Oregon, yeah, and then he came back later and had some moments where he's like, I could be that dude.
- 44:54SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 44:54SPEAKER_03: I'm not as pretty, I'm not as graceful, I'm not this, I'm not that, but I could be that dude if you need me to be.
- 45:01SPEAKER_00: And he played with he played with concussion against Michigan, but that's a different story.
- 45:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:05SPEAKER_03: So that's a whole other story.
- 45:07SPEAKER_03: But you know, so it's not that saying can't become that dude, he's just not that dude yet.
- 45:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:13SPEAKER_03: But he's gonna have an opportunity too.
- 45:15SPEAKER_00: What did what did you think of the Oklahoma game?
- 45:20SPEAKER_03: That uh Bryce Underwood is not that dude, and that John Mateer is not that dude.
- 45:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and that uh Michigan's defense is good, their offense is terrible, and uh, you know, I think Bryce Underwood has a chance.
- 45:36SPEAKER_03: If they'll make him a dual threat guy and just let him go play football, he has a chance to be pretty good.
- 45:42SPEAKER_03: He'll probably play his best football somewhere else where they'll let him be that kind of player and he can just make it up as he goes.
- 45:50SPEAKER_03: I don't think we'll ever see him in the NFL.
- 45:52SPEAKER_00: Um interesting.
- 45:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I I tend to agree with that.
- 45:55SPEAKER_00: He doesn't look like he doesn't look like yeah, I think I think the defense looks great, but uh in elite defenses look great for two games, in fairness, you know.
- 46:04SPEAKER_00: But uh, you know, I I think Oklahoma's offense might just be bad, you know.
- 46:09SPEAKER_03: I mean, that too.
- 46:10SPEAKER_03: That's what I'm saying.
- 46:11SPEAKER_03: They say John Meteor a lot of money to be an elite quarterback, and he's not.
- 46:17SPEAKER_00: He's not.
- 46:18SPEAKER_00: So I agree.
- 46:19SPEAKER_03: Uh that's uh yeah.
- 46:21SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, the interesting the interesting player to me, the most interesting player so far in the college football season to me is your boy from North Texas, who's now at Oklahoma State.
- 46:35SPEAKER_00: Um quarterback?
- 46:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, a mess maker.
- 46:39SPEAKER_03: He put up big numbers against Oregon.
- 46:41SPEAKER_00: Uh in the chance to do it again.
- 46:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he looked, he looked good.
- 46:47SPEAKER_00: You know, he's he's looked uh he's he put up big numbers at uh UNT, but he's he's he's looks really good.
- 46:53SPEAKER_00: And so does, and you're right, the other quarterback who looks good is the is a guy uh the ex-Dukey.
- 47:00SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 47:01SPEAKER_03: Well he's he hadn't played anybody yet, so we'll we'll he looks good.
- 47:04SPEAKER_03: Is their schedule uh okay and we'll leave on this note.
- 47:08SPEAKER_03: You know who else looks good?
- 47:12SPEAKER_03: Keen Holtz.
- 47:15SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, he does.
- 47:16SPEAKER_00: He does, he's looking okay.
- 47:18SPEAKER_00: He's looking okay, gosh.
- 47:20SPEAKER_03: I was like, wow, that dude's running around throwing it up.
- 47:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, Keen Holtz, here's the difference between Keen Holtz and Saiyan.
- 47:28SPEAKER_00: Saiyan's probably a better quarterback, right?
- 47:31SPEAKER_00: But but I'm telling you, like, you watch, I I just go back to I just go back to JT Barrett or to Braxton Miller or two different schemes though.
- 47:41SPEAKER_00: Like Keen Holtz.
- 47:42SPEAKER_00: I get it, but but there's an energy that even Will Howard, there's an energy that Keenholtz, Will Howard JT Barrett and Braxton Miller, you know, some of the sort of the fun quarterbacks that saying does not bring.
- 47:56SPEAKER_03: And that's a great point.
- 47:57SPEAKER_03: I agree with that.
- 47:58SPEAKER_00: That I think is, and that I think is and when you don't have that energy, you also it's hard to convey that sense of urgency, particularly in a fourth quarter.
- 48:05SPEAKER_00: That's what I think is happening.
- 48:06SPEAKER_00: But what do I know?
- 48:07SPEAKER_03: I like that.
- 48:08SPEAKER_03: I like that.
- 48:09SPEAKER_03: Uh see, it's been a rip roaring edition.
- 48:18SPEAKER_00: All right, everybody.
- 48:19SPEAKER_00: We will see you all next week.
