- 0:02Hey, welcome back to the podcast the hall hotline.
- 0:06My name is Paul. I'm gonna be your host again
- 0:08here for day three. I am a Just happy to be here
- 0:12honored to be here. I'm a devout Christian serving
- 0:16a Christ. I'm a husband a father Again just happy
- 0:21to be here and you know welcome back to today's
- 0:23podcast where We're going to talk about what
- 0:25it means to be a man after God's own heart in
- 0:28a world that is constantly trying to dismantle
- 0:30the truth. When you look at Scripture, God doesn't
- 0:34call men to be passive observers in their homes
- 0:37or in their communities. He calls us to be guardians.
- 0:40Look at 1 Corinthians verse 16 or chapter 16
- 0:44verse 13. Be on your guard, stand firm in the
- 0:48faith, be courageous, be strong, or let's look
- 0:51at Joshua 24 -15. As for me and my house, we'll
- 0:55serve the Lord. And from the beginning in the
- 0:58Garden of Eden, man was tasked with guarding
- 1:01and cultivating what God entrusted to him. But
- 1:04what happens when men step back? There's a real
- 1:08danger in male passivity. The greatest threat
- 1:11to our family's spiritual health often isn't
- 1:14an attack from the outside. It's passivity from
- 1:18the inside, guys. So when Adam stood in the garden,
- 1:21you know, while the serpent misled Eve, his sin
- 1:24wasn't just action. It was silence. You know,
- 1:27it was his passivity. And when men, you know,
- 1:30to abdicate their responsibility as a spiritual
- 1:32watchman, it creates a significant void. And
- 1:36that void will always be filled by something.
- 1:39It'll be filled by modern culture, secular ideologies,
- 1:44false theologies. Passivity, especially in today's
- 1:48day and age, it feels safe. you know, hey, I
- 1:51don't want to get involved or I don't want to
- 1:53be seen as cruel or mean or, you know, but it's
- 1:57actually dangerous. You know, it lets the enemy
- 2:00walk right in through the front door of our hearts
- 2:02and our homes and it creates a foothold there.
- 2:05And today we're going to look at, you know, a
- 2:07man in church history who refused to be passive,
- 2:10a man who stood virtually alone against the entire
- 2:13world to guard the truth. And his name was Athanasius
- 2:16of Alexandria. And to understand Athanasius,
- 2:21we have to go back to the 4th century. The Christian
- 2:24church, it just survived centuries of Roman persecution.
- 2:29But now there was a far more dangerous threat
- 2:31emerging from within the church itself. We looked
- 2:34at Polycarp and the way he was persecuted by
- 2:38the... the emperor by the early church, how they
- 2:42were persecuted by Rome and the emperors. But
- 2:45now we're gonna look at something that's gonna
- 2:49come from within that may not seem as aggressive
- 2:53or dangerous at first, but when you look at it
- 2:56more closely, it's actually a greater threat.
- 2:59And if we look back in time, we see the rise
- 3:02of Aryan heresy. So around 319 AD, a popular...
- 3:09church leader in Alexandria. He named Arius.
- 3:13He started preaching a new, a very persuasive
- 3:17idea. Arius taught that Jesus Christ was not
- 3:20truly God, that he was merely a created being.
- 3:24And he argued there was a time when the Son was
- 3:28not, where Jesus wasn't there. This became known
- 3:32as Arianism. And it sounded intellectual. It
- 3:36made Jesus easier to explain to the locals, to
- 3:39people who were not Christians at the time, and
- 3:42it quickly spread like wildflower, you know,
- 3:45or wildfire, excuse me. Powerful bishops, you
- 3:48know, they backed it. Church authorities, not
- 3:52all, but there were few that backed it and it
- 3:54had enough traction to really start spreading.
- 3:56And Roman emperors, they enjoyed it too because
- 3:59it promised political unity back in the day.
- 4:03So before long, we had a large part of the empire
- 4:06leaning towards this false teaching. And the
- 4:11early church fathers, some of them wrote against
- 4:14this, they wrote, the whole world groaned and
- 4:16it was amazed to find itself Aryan. And it would
- 4:19have been easy for Christian men to just go along
- 4:22with the crowd to compromise for the sake of
- 4:25peace. or to stay silent out of fear. But, you
- 4:28know, one young man refused to stay silent. And,
- 4:32you know, and enter Athanasius, okay? He was
- 4:37born around 296 AD in Alexandria. He was a well
- 4:41-educated Greek. He was very well -educated in
- 4:45Scripture. And, you know, at 27 years old, he
- 4:49attended the famous Council of Nicea and 325
- 4:52AD. You know, there the church affirmed that,
- 4:55you know, that Jesus is the same divine substance
- 5:00as the Father. So Jesus and the Father are one.
- 5:03And then when Athanasius became patriarch of
- 5:07Alexander three years later, he decided his entire
- 5:10life or he dedicated his entire life to defending
- 5:12the true deity of Jesus Christ. And, you know,
- 5:16because he refused to compromise with false theology,
- 5:19he paid a massive price. Okay, over his 45 -year
- 5:24ministry, he was forced into exile five different
- 5:27times by four different Roman emperors. He spent
- 5:30more than 17 years in banishment hiding out with
- 5:33desert monks, hiding in his family's tomb, and
- 5:37he was constantly fleeing for his life. His enemies
- 5:40framed him for murder, for treason, and financial
- 5:44corruption, but he still never gave up, okay?
- 5:48He earned the famous Latin title, Anathesias
- 5:52contra mundum, Anathesias against the world.
- 5:57So when everyone else compromised, this guy stood
- 6:00like an iron pillar for the truth of God. And
- 6:03men, Anathesias wasn't just fighting an abstract
- 6:08theological battle. He understood that if you
- 6:11compromise on who Jesus is, you destroy the gospel
- 6:16itself. So what does Anathasius' conviction mean
- 6:19for us today as fathers, as husbands, leaders?
- 6:24It means we stop being passive. We start guarding
- 6:27the gates of our homes. You know, the enemy doesn't
- 6:29always come with a sword. He often comes like
- 6:32with subtle lies disguised as progress, entertainment,
- 6:37tolerance. Hey, where have we heard that before
- 6:39in our culture that we need to be tolerant? of
- 6:41things that 20 years ago would have been labeled
- 6:45insane. Here are the three primary gates that
- 6:49we must guard against. What content is flooding
- 6:55in near into your living room? What streams through
- 6:59your child's screens? Media is never neutral,
- 7:02guys. It's always preaching a worldview. A spiritual
- 7:05guardian doesn't passively hand his kids a smartphone
- 7:08and hope for the best. He filters, he sets boundaries,
- 7:12engages in constant conversation about what's
- 7:14good, what's true, and ultimately what's beautiful.
- 7:18I'm not saying that I have it perfect. My son
- 7:21has a cell phone. He's 15. He does not sleep
- 7:25with the cell phone in his room. My wife has
- 7:28been very good to put blocks on the phone. We
- 7:31see all his text messages. We see what he's looking
- 7:34at. Again, kids are very smart. Our son's a pretty
- 7:37good kid, but still he can find ways around it.
- 7:39So there's constantly, you gotta be constantly
- 7:41checking on that. The stuff that is available
- 7:44on the internet, the stuff that's available from
- 7:47other kids when they go to their house, their
- 7:50phone may be blocked, but you need to check out
- 7:52too, you know, what kids he's around because
- 7:54their phones may not have blocks on them. And
- 7:56the phone is really, the internet's a portal
- 7:58to everything. And there's a lot of bad things
- 8:01on the internet, okay? A lot of people that uh
- 8:05want to influence your kids and they may come
- 8:07as good but they're really uh they're really
- 8:09the message that the learning is not good or
- 8:11not in in check with your values okay so and
- 8:14then we got to look at the educational and cultural
- 8:17gate you know what values are your children being
- 8:19taught about their identity about truth about
- 8:23morality are they being disciplined by a culture
- 8:25you know for 40 hours a week while getting only
- 8:28one hour of church on sunday you know And I said
- 8:31this in the last episode or maybe the first one
- 8:34is, men, we are spiritually accountable for the
- 8:37foundation of our families. We've got to be actively
- 8:39involved in what they learn and how they think.
- 8:43What they're around, there's a lot of good people.
- 8:47I know public schools get a bad rep. There are
- 8:50a lot of good teachers in there who want to do
- 8:52the right thing, who want to do good. But it's
- 8:55not all of them, just like in every profession.
- 8:57And also... Their minds are very young. They're
- 9:00very impressionable. So we have to be careful
- 9:02about what they're taking in, okay? But we also
- 9:05have to give them enough strength. We have to
- 9:08give them enough courage. We have to give them
- 9:09enough insight into being able to go out in the
- 9:13world and defend themselves as well, okay? So,
- 9:17you know, let's equip our children. And then
- 9:20the final gate is that theological gate, okay?
- 9:23False theology, it's not just a fourth century
- 9:26problem. Today, ideas like moralistic, I guess
- 9:31they call it moralistic therapeutic deism. God
- 9:35just wants me to be happy. There's a huge billboard
- 9:38on I -4 here. It says God's not angry. Universalism
- 9:43or prosperity gospel. We've got a lot of that
- 9:46on TV with... People that promise that if you
- 9:49become a Christian, your income will increase,
- 9:53your happiness will increase. Well, I mean, scripture
- 9:56is very clear that you will lose friends for
- 10:00chasing Christ. You will lose opportunities.
- 10:04The Christian road is a difficult road. I think
- 10:08I said something yesterday or the last episode
- 10:10about it's Easy to practice Christianity in the
- 10:14United States. It's not in other parts of the
- 10:16world. You can you can literally get Get killed
- 10:19for for preaching or being a follower of Christ
- 10:22But there are there are certain things that that
- 10:25make your life difficult here if you're gonna
- 10:27become a follower of Christ more difficult. Okay,
- 10:29so You know Anathasius he knew scripture inside
- 10:35and out. Okay relying on it. He used at the spot
- 10:37era, you know, he knew that when that false portrayal
- 10:42of who Christ was that Christ was a created being
- 10:44I don't even like saying that out loud out of
- 10:46my mouth Okay, he knew God's word well enough
- 10:48to protect himself and we need to get that way
- 10:51to protect our families from Virtual spiritual
- 10:54poison. Okay, you know as as we wrap up today.
- 10:58I want you to leave you with two They're difficult
- 11:02but necessary reflection questions. I encourage
- 11:06you to turn off your device after this episode
- 11:09and really think through these. What number one,
- 11:13what influences or cultural ideas are currently
- 11:16sneaking past the gates of your mind or your
- 11:18home? Where have you become passive or allowed
- 11:22convenience to replace vigilance? It's difficult.
- 11:28It's difficult to be a husband. It's difficult
- 11:30to be a father. You know, I'm 55 guys and I talk
- 11:36from experience. So if there was mistakes, I've
- 11:38made them. You know, but we have to be vigilant
- 11:42about that and we can't be passive when it comes
- 11:45to our children. It's the most important thing
- 11:48next to Christ that we can do. Okay. It's be
- 11:52good parents and be good stewards of our relationship
- 11:54with our children and our spouses. Okay. And
- 11:58then the second is I'd like you to think about
- 12:01how can you actively shepherd your family's spiritual
- 12:04walk starting today. Is it leading your family
- 12:07in prayer? Is it establishing daily Bible reading?
- 12:11Or just having an open conversation about culture.
- 12:15Men, standing for truth when the world goes the
- 12:18other way, it isn't easy. Anathasius spent 17
- 12:21years in exile because he refused to bow to culture
- 12:24or compromise the faith. But his legacy saved
- 12:28the truth for generations to come. you know,
- 12:31stand up in the tower, be on your guard, stand
- 12:35firm in the faith. You know, guys, and just to
- 12:38go back to, just to make a point real quick,
- 12:41you know, when Eve ate the forbidden fruit, bringing
- 12:46sin into the world, bringing original sin into
- 12:49the world is something that we all have to cope
- 12:51with today. I've got a question for the men out
- 12:54there and for the ladies watching, what was Adam
- 12:57doing? Adam was right there. He didn't stop her.
- 13:01He didn't say, hey, I don't think this was a
- 13:04good idea. He let Eve be tempted and he failed
- 13:09his wife. He failed the helper that God gave
- 13:12him and ultimately they failed the entire mankind
- 13:17by bringing sin into the world, okay? So maybe
- 13:20not everything's as dire as the Adam and Eve,
- 13:24what Adam did not do for his wife Eve, but Listen
- 13:28guys, small increments, small blocks, small little
- 13:32compromises lead to big things. That's all I
- 13:37have for today. If this episode challenged you,
- 13:39share it with another brother who needs to hear
- 13:41it. Until next time, stay vigilant, stay grounded,
- 13:45stay firm. Why? Because it's the hallway. All
- 13:48right, thanks guys. See you all later.
