- 0:00Welcome back, Theater Lovers, to the BSB Podcast.
- 0:02Today we're continuing our discussion of the North American touring production
- 0:06of the notebook.
- 0:07So you haven't seen it yet, please pause this video and join us again once you have,
- 0:10as there will be plenty of spoilers.
- 0:12That being said, RJ, let's get right into it.
- 0:15We talked about Allie, Noah, and the challenge of turning one of
- 0:17the world's best known romantic dramas into a stage musical.
- 0:20and now we need to talk about the thing that actually makes this version
- 0:23of the notebook the musical. Ingrid Michelson's score.
- 0:26You said that you knew about Ingrid Michelson before this.
- 0:30I have never heard of that name until you mentioned it approximately twenty minutes
- 0:34ago. What what did you kind of know about Ingrid before setting his foot into
- 0:38the notebook?
- 0:39I mean, she has plenty of of songs.
- 0:42singer-songwriter style.
- 0:46And that's, I mean, that's one of my favorite kinds of music.
- 0:49But I was introduced to her music way back again in high school.
- 0:54~ and for those of you wondering how long ago that was,
- 0:58approximately 15 plus years. so it's it's been a minute
- 1:02We're old guys, we're old.
- 1:03since since I've listened. ~ I mean,
- 1:06aside from when she's, you know.
- 1:08In my library on Shuffle. But this,
- 1:12from what I had heard a little bit of the score previous to seeing the show,
- 1:15I knew that there would probably be some tight harmonies,
- 1:21and it was gonna be ballad heavy because she predominantly again,
- 1:26it's it's slow song after slow song on her albums.
- 1:30She's not like a peppy upbeat pop star.
- 1:33~ it is ~ it's a little bit more.
- 1:37In the feels type music.
- 1:39It's an Adele and not a Britney Spears.
- 1:41Yes. With with a little bit more guitar and folky vibe.
- 1:46Listen, we have to bring it down we have to bring it down low for me.
- 1:49You know, I don't know all these other words you use.
- 1:51well, it's wonderful that you have heard of Ingrid before because I
- 1:55had not heard her name. I just looked her up as you were talking.
- 1:58There's not a song of hers that I could even think about that even
- 2:03sh tickled the brain at all. I was completely looking at this,
- 2:07being like, I have no idea who this person is.
- 2:08I'm sorry to this person. That being said,
- 2:11I think that it's interesting when you talk about Sinker Songwriter because
- 2:15Those vibes are exactly what the notebook was when it comes to this show.
- 2:20Like, this is a hundred percent what she would picture.
- 2:24Somebody who's just writing songs with their guitar,
- 2:27like sitting on the edge of a the river.
- 2:29And part of me doesn't know if that's because of that's what ~ Noah does
- 2:33in the story. That's why I'm picturing that,
- 2:35or if that's actually the vibe.
- 2:36But you know what I mean? Like it kind of feels like you're just kind
- 2:38of you're plucking a s you're plucking the guitar and you're you're writing down
- 2:41some things and like you're very artsy.
- 2:43And that's what this show really is.
- 2:44It's like an
- 2:45artsy show ~ for people who love that kind of music.
- 2:50Yeah, I think it's it's actually kind of made for the the music nerds
- 2:54a little bit because
- 2:56Mm-hmm.
- 2:57a lot of musical theater tends to be aside from like if we're looking
- 3:01at like Sondheim or something,
- 3:02but modern musical theater tends to be very like here are four chords,
- 3:08maybe five, and that is like every song of every throughout the show.
- 3:14Maybe different different tempos,
- 3:16obviously different lyrics, but generally easy.
- 3:19This show is way more like you said,
- 3:25like I could sit on my mom's front porch with an acoustic guitar
- 3:28and probably sing through most of these songs,
- 3:31and they would still sound similar to what you would hear on the studio side
- 3:37or on the cast album, ~ with a lot of like harmonic
- 3:42things happening that just they sound pretty.
- 3:46Yeah, it reminds me a little bit,
- 3:48~ and this might be blasphemous for you,
- 3:50RJ. So please don't cringe too hard.
- 3:52It reminds me a little bit of the structure of The Outsiders,
- 3:55with like how that music is kind of like that music is also,
- 3:59you know, blue gr it's a little more blue grassy I I should say.
- 4:02But again, they're all songs that you could play on your front porch
- 4:06and you wouldn't miss necessarily a lot of it because there isn't a
- 4:08lot of other like heavy instrumental pieces to it.
- 4:12This is very much like a down-to-earth kind of show.
- 4:15~ and so I was definitely getting a little bit of the outsider vibes.
- 4:19That being said, ~ I love the outsiders,
- 4:21and ~ you I cannot tell you a day later,
- 4:26less than 12 hours later, a a little more over than 12 hours.
- 4:29I apologize. A single song from this soundtrack that stood out to me.
- 4:33There's not one that I could be like,
- 4:35yeah, that was good. There were people behind us.
- 4:37I don't know if you heard them when we were there,
- 4:38and they were talking to the row behind them,
- 4:41and they were like,
- 4:42this song, this song, this song from TikTok,
- 4:44this one's really popular, this one,
- 4:45this one, this and when the that was at intermission at the second act,
- 4:48there wasn't a single song that I said,
- 4:50I know that from TikTok. Or if I have,
- 4:52it's nothing stuck in this brain.
- 4:54Because I think that ~ for me,
- 4:56most of the music of the notebook was forgettable.
- 5:00There was not a single thing that was like,
- 5:01Yep, I'm gonna put that on my shelf and listen to that all the time.
- 5:04Yeah,
- 5:04I think I mostly agree. I think at this point I've I've heard the album
- 5:09a enough and by enough I mean like twice.
- 5:14~ that I generally the two songs I know immediately the TikTok song is my days.
- 5:20~ Joy Wood's performance
- 5:22Is it?
- 5:23of that is insane and yes,
- 5:27it it went viral for a while.
- 5:30~ I'm not even sure why, but ~ it's it's the it
- 5:35is probably the only primary power ballad of the show.
- 5:40Well, people could argue
- 5:40Yeah, I would agree with that.
- 5:42about argue about Noah's too, but hers is just like yeah.
- 5:46~ and then I would say the only other
- 5:49one that I thoroughly
- 5:53I don't even want to say thoroughly enjoy,
- 5:55but that I recognize is is the opening number,
- 5:58which kind of comes back ~ in what they call the coda,
- 6:02which is labeled time, which of course this whole show is about time.
- 6:07and I love a good lyric.
- 6:11So I I do love a lot of the lyrics of the show,
- 6:14but the melodies are just like you said,
- 6:16they're so unfortunately forgettable.
- 6:20'cause I I couldn't even tell you.
- 6:21Looking at the song list, I can't even tell you what scenes or what
- 6:25was happening in those scenes during these songs because that's just
- 6:28how forgettable to me they were.
- 6:30You know, I will I'm gonna back up.
- 6:32I'm gonna take back what I said.
- 6:34I do remember my days now that you mention it,
- 6:37only because of our ~ our middle alley gave a lot of she gave a great performance
- 6:43at that one. And it was one that definitely felt very ~ Broadway in
- 6:47the fact that she was standing in the middle,
- 6:48she was kind of singing her high notes going higher and higher,
- 6:50and then it cut to black. So that one does stand out.
- 6:53But again, am I gonna seek that out to listen to it?
- 6:56Probably not. I do want to touch on time real quick.
- 6:59What I loved, not only did it come back in coda,
- 7:02but there was plenty of times where older Allie was singing
- 7:06the melody throughout the show at little pieces,
- 7:08but like wasn't words. If she was just like humming it.
- 7:11And to me, I love a good fucking motif.
- 7:13And so if you put that motif in there of just like keep coming back to the time,
- 7:17she's also kind of remembering time,
- 7:18but it's not remembering her in a way.
- 7:20~ I loved that. I do think that piece of the story was good.
- 7:24I
- 7:26I'm looking at the set list. There's 20 musical sequences,
- 7:29and I can't tell you a single one.
- 7:32sorry. Guys, I I'm nothing but full of lies today.
- 7:36This hair just is hiding lots of lies.
- 7:39Leave the light on. I liked that one too.
- 7:42But that was kind of
- 7:43Of course he did.
- 7:45what is that supposed to mean?
- 7:46What is that supposed to mean,
- 7:47RJ?
- 7:48I
- 7:48mean that is basically the equivalent of my days,
- 7:51but Noah's version, I would say.
- 7:52Yes, correct. A thousand percent I was gonna say that.
- 7:53It was it was giving,
- 7:58my gosh, why am I blinking on the Elish Keys musical,
- 8:01Hell's Kitchen. ~ it was giving the the
- 8:05Yes.
- 8:06female ballad, whatever the name of that is.
- 8:09That's the energy that I was getting
- 8:10Yes. I know what you're talking about.
- 8:12from him with this with that song.
- 8:15Yes. It's funny you say that because when he was performing,
- 8:18I said to myself, Why am I getting reminiscence of Hell's Kitchen?
- 8:24Like a hundred percent. Like my brain was going straight to Hell's Kitchen.
- 8:28And so I think that's why maybe it was tickling a little bit for me.
- 8:31Cause I do Hell's Kitchen is one of those ones the longer I sit with it,
- 8:34the more I actually kind of like it.
- 8:35~ not that I disliked it, but it was just kind of like a,
- 8:39okay, this was a musical and now that I'm sitting with it,
- 8:41like specifically the the one song you're talking about.
- 8:43makes I think about that song often.
- 8:45And so I do think that will be one ~ leave the light on that I will think about
- 8:50potentially, ~ if I don't forget about it in the next twenty minutes,
- 8:53that I will think about again.
- 8:55But I think like those are the really three of the only songs that were standouts.
- 8:59Other than that, was there even points to stop and clap?
- 9:01Were we clapping or did it just go in from one song to the other?
- 9:04Because I feel like there I don't remember one song changing from the other
- 9:08all that much. It felt like it was just like the a continuous soundtrack
- 9:11of the same kind of music from
- 9:13Second to minute to minute.
- 9:14There w there were some applause breaks,
- 9:16b begrudgingly to some of us. ~
- 9:20Mm.
- 9:21They had time at least.
- 9:21But there were some there
- 9:23were some that just like went straight into the scene,
- 9:25which honestly I just appreciate.
- 9:27I think the honestly the appla applause breaks is what made everything slow down.
- 9:32Like it made the show feel slow.
- 9:35~ because when you only have like a two to three minute song
- 9:38and you're clapping after every other one,
- 9:40it it takes forever. but there were some
- 9:47moments where
- 9:48we would draw right into the next scene the next scene,
- 9:53but then that would draw right into the next song.
- 9:55So a little bit of both, I guess.
- 9:58Sure. There is one other piece to the music I do want to call out because
- 10:01I do think it was kind of cool because it did relate to the movie.
- 10:04But like everybody knows the meme scene from the movie of what do you want?
- 10:08You know, where he's just he's yelling at Allie,
- 10:11What do you want? And she says,
- 10:12I don't know. And the fact that they did that in one of the songs made me chuckle.
- 10:15And I don't think it was supposed to make me chuckle,
- 10:17but I definitely laughed and said,
- 10:19~ a call back to the movie, which is pretty cool.
- 10:21~ but it was like doing a really intense scene as well.
- 10:25So I don't know if that's like a it's a positive for it or a negative for it,
- 10:27but I feel like I wasn't the only one laughing as well.
- 10:29There was other people around me that were also chuckling to that.
- 10:32So I feel like maybe that's what was supposed to be happening.
- 10:34~ which was the only other piece of the musical music at all that was standout
- 10:38to me was that piece of that was a callback.
- 10:41Yeah,
- 10:41yeah. I mean, gosh, a even as I was kind of ~ creating some social content around
- 10:48this, when I was looking up certain sounds,
- 10:51like that is the one like when you look the notebook up,
- 10:53Ha ha.
- 10:54like
- 10:54every single thing is just him speaking those lines.
- 10:57And so of course, yeah, they have to have it ~ reframed i in the show,
- 11:03but
- 11:04again, didn't didn't
- 11:05Yeah.
- 11:05hit I think as powerfully as maybe in the book and or movie.
- 11:10So think speaking of things I hit,
- 11:12I do want to go right back to my days.
- 11:14RJ, if this was the song that defined the show,
- 11:17does it live up to the hype? Does it meet the the needs that you need
- 11:22for a Broadway show to feel powerful,
- 11:26showcasey? Like, do you think that this is like do you think like maybe this
- 11:30is why the show itself didn't have as long as a life?
- 11:33I'm asking you a lot here on on one song,
- 11:35but like do you know what I mean?
- 11:37Well and
- 11:39So our performance of my days.
- 11:43I'm why am I blinking on the actress's name right now?
- 11:46~
- 11:48Are you talking
- 11:48about her going flat?
- 11:50She didn't go flat, she or she did crack like at the very,
- 11:53very beginning of my days, and I immediately was like,
- 11:57~ no. Cause we've all been there.
- 11:59If you're a performer, you know shit can just happen on stage.
- 12:03Like the air could be too dry.
- 12:05You you're tired, your voice is tired,
- 12:07you just you it slips in and out.
- 12:09And most people probably didn't hear it,
- 12:12but but if you have a musical ear,
- 12:14you you did. And
- 12:17So I immediately tensed in my seat because I was like,
- 12:19my God, it's only the beginning of this song.
- 12:21I know where this song goes. She's gonna have to,
- 12:25we are buckling up. Like, and at that point,
- 12:29I'm just have my fingers crossed for any performer in that situation because
- 12:33I know the expectations of the audience are so high.
- 12:35And so thankfully, she did props to her.
- 12:40She got through it. However, I do think it maybe wasn't her best performance.
- 12:46Performance of this song. And so that was kind of in the back of my head when
- 12:50I think about okay, if My Days is the kind of framework for the show,
- 12:55it it doesn't help. ~ because part of
- 13:00me was like stressed for her, and the other part of me was like,
- 13:04mmm, that didn't hit as hard as I thought it would.
- 13:09~ but also incredibly
- 13:12Incredibly
- 13:13predictable. Like you mentioned earlier,
- 13:15coming down front, center stage.
- 13:17There was, and we'll get into this when we talk about the staging
- 13:20and design and such, but everything felt very like I could see
- 13:25the lighting cues every single time there was a cue because they were just
- 13:29so it felt robotic. And so it then made the acting and the singing feel
- 13:35a little bit that way as well.
- 13:37Like when I was watching her walk to let's say stage left.
- 13:41And then just a split second behind her walking,
- 13:45the lighting would then go stage left.
- 13:49It was like we're either like not right on the lighting cues,
- 13:53or obviously the show's a little bit newer to tour.
- 13:56Maybe they're just still not in sync.
- 13:59But it it was distracting, is my point in all of that.
- 14:04And so I don't know, my days. It was still v i it's an incredible song.
- 14:10~ it's incredibly hard to sing.
- 14:13And so I give mad props to anyone performing it,
- 14:17but it mm debatable.
- 14:21I am going to just throw this in there for anybody who's listening.
- 14:25This is a a new cast, year two cast,
- 14:28and their first show was their first show ever performing was the night before ours.
- 14:33We were only the second time they've ever performed on stage in front
- 14:36of an audience. And so it is possible that they were working out a lot of the kinks.
- 14:40~ so I just want
- 14:42Yeah, very green.
- 14:43I just want to throw that out there.
- 14:44Like it was like the they're brand new.
- 14:46They are fresh to this. That being said.
- 14:50This is where I go back to the story a little bit.
- 14:52I'm sorry to bring it back to this because I'm gonna harp on this to no end.
- 14:54This song is at the wrong place.
- 14:58So, this song, she sings it,
- 15:01and then she still goes back to the train station and then she runs away
- 15:05and comes back to him weeks later.
- 15:06This should have been the moment that the woman says,
- 15:10Thank you for coming. we hope you have a good day at the train station.
- 15:13She's standing there on the train station.
- 15:15It should have started in that moment.
- 15:17And it should have taken her back to Noah.
- 15:19And I think that was the emotional piece of the song that is actually missing.
- 15:23Her staying in the middle of it felt very much like ~ Audra in ~ Gypsy.
- 15:28You know what mean? Standing there just kind of singing a ballot,
- 15:31and I get that. But if you would have put that in a moment where she's like like
- 15:36she's hustling back to Noah, and even if she would have cracked,
- 15:38you would have understood because the emotional piece was she's making
- 15:41it back to her guy, she's made the decision.
- 15:43She doesn't want to live her days in a relationship she's unhappy with
- 15:46in a family that doesn't recognize her.
- 15:48I think psychologically that makes the most sense and that's where
- 15:52it should have went. And that's why I think that this song isn't
- 15:55the emotional crux that it that the Notebook wants it to be.
- 15:59Yeah, the end of the show timing-wise,
- 16:02~ like scene-wise, made little to no sense to me.
- 16:06And and I totally agree. and maybe that's why it was so hard to follow.
- 16:12I was like, because we have that song.
- 16:14Then yeah, you have the scene with her going leaving,
- 16:19but you don't know where she's leaving to or how long she's leaving for.
- 16:22And then the show base it just ends,
- 16:25basically.
- 16:26You
- 16:26have the finale. ~
- 16:27Yeah.
- 16:28and so yeah, it was just it felt very abrupt.
- 16:31I remember thinking, wait, like that this is the last song.
- 16:35Yeah.
- 16:35There was no there's no like redemption arc,
- 16:37there's no which I know like in the movie too,
- 16:40I don't know, I feel like you get more time.
- 16:43And in this we didn't
- 16:45Yeah, no, I think that we are missing a piece of the story.
- 16:50Why the show it was less than two hours is astounding to me.
- 16:54~ I mean, I guess it's a little it's about two hours.
- 16:58We're I feel like we're missing that half an hour that would have made
- 17:01it all better. And then when you think about the stagecraft of the show,
- 17:05too. You mentioned the lighting.
- 17:06Yeah, the lighting was very obvious,
- 17:08but also the set itself was not doing much for me.
- 17:12You couldn't really
- 17:13I could kind you could kind of see them.
- 17:15Like if you're up front near us,
- 17:16you could see that they're skipping on stones at the top.
- 17:18I'm sure it's better when you're on the balcony or mezzanine at the very front
- 17:21of the stage. But there's not a lot going on.
- 17:23There's like the porch that comes becomes a train station.
- 17:26There's a porch that becomes, you know,
- 17:28~ a porch, I guess. You know what I mean?
- 17:30Like there's not much else besides the the the coolest part of the
- 17:35set was the facility that older Ali and older Noah live at and it rolls in and out.
- 17:43of the stage, like backwards and forwards.
- 17:45Other than that, I didn't feel like there was really much going on visually
- 17:49to look at, which I feel like maybe is the piece of this show that's also missing.
- 17:54Totally agree. ~ I think that they were really hoping that the
- 18:00the modernization of the lights,
- 18:03the the hanging lights, would give more energy to the set.
- 18:07I don't think it did at all. I think it was just added glowy things.
- 18:11~ and yeah,
- 18:13Which was your same complaint
- 18:14the the
- 18:15about ~ a beautiful noise with the with the memory show and the glowing lights,
- 18:19and you're like, it adds nothing to the show.
- 18:21Yeah, it's just and I get like maybe it's maybe it's a budget constraint,
- 18:26maybe it's a you know, maybe there's something creatively that I'm just missing.
- 18:30I I tr I get what it was doing,
- 18:33but I it wasn't doing enough to to make up for I just there there has to
- 18:38be a strong part of the show that carries the show.
- 18:42And I think that's it just was missing.
- 18:44It wasn't the music. Obviously there's like little to no choreo,
- 18:48so it wasn't the choreo.
- 18:50The costumes are everyday clothes,
- 18:52so it wasn't the costumes. And it wasn't the set.
- 18:55There was it was just yeah, we're at a dock for ninety percent of the show,
- 19:00and the other part
- 19:00Yeah.
- 19:01were in a facility in a bed. And that's I don't know,
- 19:06it felt very kind of old timey set too,
- 19:09just in the way that things were brought on and off and everything about it.
- 19:13It was
- 19:15I and don't ask me like what I would have done instead,
- 19:17because I have no idea. I realize that the that sets are limited
- 19:23and the the physicality of a show is limited,
- 19:25but it was leaving almost too much to the imagination,
- 19:30I would say. Even like when we got to the the our house,
- 19:34I wasn't impressed. I wasn't impressed at all with the house.
- 19:37Yeah.
- 19:38And they kept saying, like, ~ it's so pretty,
- 19:40and I'm like,
- 19:40No?
- 19:41Yeah, to give you an idea, listeners,
- 19:43it's literally just like a banister porch with like a door and a
- 19:46few windows come down that you have to imagine what the like the facade
- 19:50of the house looks like. Like you don't get any idea of like what
- 19:53the house actually looks like at all.
- 19:54Well in the facade I and I'm trying to remember from the movie,
- 19:57I could be totally off. I know that he's obviously like not rich.
- 20:02So I mean, I guess he he maybe couldn't have made it more grand.
- 20:06But I was just looking at that.
- 20:08I'm like, it's not appealing as a house.
- 20:12Like you you're putting this on the front of a magazine or ~ newspaper
- 20:15and saying like it's gorgeous and he did such a good job,
- 20:20but like even the banister was just like a flat
- 20:23banister. Like it wasn't
- 20:24Yeah.
- 20:25even like that had design on it.
- 20:26~ and I don't know anything about lumber,
- 20:29but I don't know. I just those small,
- 20:32small details. If you're gonna only give me a banister and a door,
- 20:36can we make it something?
- 20:39Yeah, I mean but as an expert of wood.
- 20:41No, I'm just even the even the piece where ~ she's touching
- 20:48the table and she's like like acting like it was the most sexy table she'd ever seen
- 20:52in her life. And I was just like,
- 20:54that table is just a basic table.
- 20:56Like I have it I have a table that I paid for that's hand carved
- 21:00and it's more impressive than you know what I mean?
- 21:02Like it's just like nothing felt
- 21:05Like if he spent all of his love and his time to like bring her back to this house,
- 21:08even if he had no money, you're carving that wood and it's literally just like it's
- 21:12a block of wood. That's a leg.
- 21:14There's nothing else to go with it.
- 21:16Yeah, and I just I looked up the house from the movie.
- 21:20and it's pretty. I mean, like ~ I don't know.
- 21:25It just even maybe the lighting wasn't helping because the house is blue.
- 21:30So everything was dark. Ev and everything was blue,
- 21:33right? Her costumes were blue,
- 21:36much of the lighting in the set was blue because they were around water,
- 21:39and then the house was blue, and so it was just like almost an overload.
- 21:44And I guess the
- 21:46The interior of the house we only get like one scene in the kitchen,
- 21:49right? And it is a basic it is a basic table.
- 21:54but again,
- 21:58yeah, that and that was a bizarre that scene was bizarre too,
- 22:02~ in regards
- 22:03Yes.
- 22:03to like the sex sexualization of a table.
- 22:06I was like, not sure that this was needed,
- 22:09but okay.
- 22:10Yeah, no, that whole scene was very it felt very,
- 22:12for lack of better terms, cringy.
- 22:14Like I was just like, ooh, I'm really uncomfortable.
- 22:16This is like you're like, you're rubbing this table and I know what you're going
- 22:20for, but you didn't have to go for it this way.
- 22:22Like you did not have to deliver it that way.
- 22:23~ it feels like all of their money went into doing the rain scene.
- 22:27That was you could have done something differently.
- 22:30Like I I they wanted their out their outsiders moment with the rain scene,
- 22:34and then like they got it, and like,
- 22:36you know, that's where the budget went.
- 22:38Thousand percent. I mean, you know,
- 22:41can't can't do the notebook without rain.
- 22:44And that was s ~
- 22:46It is impressive.
- 22:48you know, it it was very clearly ~ built differently than the outsiders one was.
- 22:54like a flat sheet,
- 22:58I felt like, because you could tell you could also tell that she was supposed
- 23:02to be standing just a little bit more ~
- 23:04Yes.
- 23:07a little further back and so the rain just only was hitting her on her shoulder.
- 23:12And again, like this cast new.
- 23:15I've only done it, you know, in rehearsal,
- 23:18not even with the full set. And I was like,
- 23:22girl, please just take a slight step back.
- 23:25Just a small step. because I'm like,
- 23:27my God, like how her wig's gonna get wet,
- 23:31her costume, which like it is supposed to get a little bit wet,
- 23:34but I don't know. That was just that was a moment.
- 23:37Yeah. It was it was it was cool to see that come to life.
- 23:40~ and it's like it is like a true like romantic comedy moment or like a
- 23:45rom kind of like a like any kind of romance story.
- 23:47Like you have to have a scene in the rain,
- 23:49right? Like it harkens back to what you really want.
- 23:51But truthfully, it just was like they're wearing the same fourteen color
- 23:58clothing. I mean, I guess we have to talk about the costumes real quick too.
- 24:00There's so many costume changes,
- 24:01but they're all exactly the same and how they're so different and you have
- 24:04to change so much is also just a problem.
- 24:07~ like love to dear I love the show dearly.
- 24:11~ well I love the movie dearly,
- 24:13but every outfit she wore was blue and it was almost the exact same blue
- 24:16and it was almost the exact same dress.
- 24:17It was a what like there was nothing to really differentiate
- 24:20or variate visually from this one.
- 24:23But I guess people got their rain moment,
- 24:24so like they're gonna be happy.
- 24:26Yeah, and and that is also why the timeline piece,
- 24:30like we spoke about in our previous episode,
- 24:33was hard to follow because you're just like and we were like ten rows back from
- 24:39the front. And I was still like,
- 24:41is that the same dress? Is it a different dress?
- 24:45what's going on?
- 24:48Like we we chose to make a a wig switch h like here,
- 24:53but not there. I it was yeah.
- 24:56Some some choices were made.
- 24:58For sure. So it does beg to differ as we're getting into our final discussion here.
- 25:03Is does the stage adaptation justify telling the notebook once again?
- 25:06And I would say probably not.
- 25:09not. I mean, for people who just like to see the notebook to
- 25:11Like this is not what I'm gonna line up to go see again.
- 25:13see it, then they're they're they're gonna see it.
- 25:16If if you like like many of the shows,
- 25:19if you like the thing, right? If if you're like I could watch the notebook
- 25:24ten times over, you're gonna love this.
- 25:26You're gonna love it. if you've seen the notebook one time because it was
- 25:32a fad way back when and you have no real context of
- 25:37what it is now, you'll you'll probably be like,
- 25:40help me remember how this is supposed to go because the show isn't helping you.
- 25:44For sure. Absolutely. And I do think that like there is a time and a place for this.
- 25:49This is not this is a show that I'm actually really glad we didn't see in New York,
- 25:53that we didn't waste time seeing.
- 25:56~ and not that it's a waste of time.
- 25:58I'm really glad I got to see the notebook.
- 26:00People who love the movie and love the novel are probably gonna love the show.
- 26:05There's no denying that you are gonna probably get tiered up unless you don't have
- 26:10a connection like I do, which I didn't get teared up,
- 26:12you know, about it.
- 26:13I would say that if I had an option,
- 26:15I'm gonna see the movie. It's just as good.
- 26:18It's probably done a little bit better.
- 26:21~ and I don't have to invest a lot of money to see the show.
- 26:25But that's also because I've already seen the show once.
- 26:28And so do I recommend people seeing it at least once?
- 26:30Yeah, for sure.
- 26:31Yeah, same. I mean this would be something if it comes around again I
- 26:36I don't need to line up to go see it.
- 26:38~
- 26:39We came, we saw, we conquered.
- 26:42We're done.
- 26:42The the music
- 26:43doesn't add anything for me. Same thing.
- 26:45I kind of actually want to go back now and watch the movie to kind of compare
- 26:50~ I mean, my, you know, fifteen-year-old brain,
- 26:52~ then the show, and now my 30-year-old brain,
- 26:58~ to make those kind of comparisons.
- 27:02But I yeah. Nothing
- 27:05For sure.
- 27:06nothing's drawing me back.
- 27:08So while the notebook has spent decades asking whether love can survive time,
- 27:11distance, and memory, on stage the questions get even more complicated because
- 27:14young, middle, and older versions of these characters can exist together right
- 27:17in front of us. So if you've seen the notebook at the Fisher Theater
- 27:20or somewhere else on Twoware, we want to hear from you.
- 27:21Did the musical live up to the story you already knew?
- 27:23And more importantly, which song broke you?
