[upbeat music] Oh, oh, oh yeah. Oh, hey. M- m- m- turn this thing down a little bit. Oh, all right.
• 0:17
Hey, hey, welcome everybody to Full Spectrum Cycling. It's show number 164, I think. 164. I-64. Isn't that like- Where is that? Is that like-... bingo... Indy or something? Yeah. Sure. Some- I think so...
• 0:33
somewhere over there. It sounds familiar. Or maybe it's w- I don't know, somewhere over that way. Indianapolis on the way home. Interstate 64. On the way to the dunes. Uh- Or something... how's it going, everybody?
• 0:43
We got, uh, JK here now over there. Hi, hi, hi. Hi. We, we have James now here too also. James is here now. Back for the attack. Right on, right on, and Tony sexting somebody or something over there. [laughs] Mr.
• 0:58
Trusky, I'm not sexting, Mr. Trusky. Well, then let's see your hands. It's a bike question. Why are your, why are your hands- I'm not gonna judge... why are your hands under the table? [laughs] Because I'm lazy.
• 1:07
No, I can't go to the- Oh, boy... blackboard and solve the problem. [laughs] Right on, right on. Well, heck-in-A, now, it's warm outside here in the, uh, Midwestern part of the United States of America.
• 1:21
Occasionally, today- Yeah... or Wednesday. There's that, uh, about an hour where it's suddenly down to 55. Right. I know. I, I was like, "Oh, I'll just go out for a smoke," and da, da, dun. And I'm like, "Ooh."
• 1:34
[laughs] And I walked into, like, the fog, or into the cloud that fell down on the outside of the lake. I'm like, " Uh, hello." Right, the descending cloud. Yeah.
• 1:43
Well, Tuesday, I, I, we live, most of us, all of us live rather close to the lake over here on this side of the
• 1:50
Milwaukee city, but, uh, I had to go out to the west side in Stallis on Tuesday and it was, like, 88 degrees out there, and it was 71 at my house. I'm like, "I'm glad I- I'm glad-... I'm glad I live by the lake."
• 2:01
Me too, yeah. Yeah. I, I'm, I'm not into that humid 88 degree bullshittery. Mm-hmm. But, uh, anyway, made it so I actually wanted to ride my bike a little bit. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
• 2:13
And I got my single speed ready for... Well, it's kinda except for swapping tires out, it's basically ready for SingleSpeed USA coming up here in August of 2022 in Decorah, Iowa.
• 2:24
[metal clanking] So if you guys, uh, if you guys wanna go somewhere fun with your one-speeded bike, that's where you're gonna wanna go. [beeping] Beep, beep. There was a, it was the Road Runner.
• 2:37
What does, what does he want? Um, [laughs] sorry. Tell the Wile E. Coyote to leave him alone. Bleep, bleep. [laughs] Uh, if anybody's inclined, tomorrow, I know it's short notice, but tomorrow is the, uh,
• 2:49
also in Decorah, the Time Trial Reunion, which was really fun last year, and I'm st- I'm still considering having gone there yesterday, which I haven't done yet today. [laughs] Don't, don't- Makes sense...
• 3:04
also forget that Sunday- Well, it's rain-... is registration for the River West 24. Oh, I'm gonna, we're gonna just, we'll mention that. Oh. Oh. It's at Black Husky at, uh, what time does that start?
• 3:13
You gotta bring up your documents. 10 this year. Documents? Oh, I don't have the document right here. Yeah, you gotta put in your documents. I believe it's 10 this year.
• 3:19
I mean, in defense, it i- it is after the 10th, dude. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Rest in peace. Rest in peace, sir. Yeah, the landlord passed away. What? From Lebowski. Oh, okay. [laughs] Dude, it is the 10th. Far out, man.
• 3:35
And now we'll never get to see his play. [drum music] This is where, do, the magic- Are you figuring that-... of radio... figuring that out over there? Yeah, I guess so. Ti- time-wise? Yeah.
• 3:48
[clears throat] For the t- 24 registration? 10. 10. And, uh, you need to register online before going there, right?
• 3:56
That is what they- I would imagine that- Um, I believe the online is, yeah, create an account and, and register online, but that's mainly for the people that are gonna be VIPs. Okay.
• 4:06
So everyone that volunteered, so pretty much everybody. I thought anybody had to register. Well, you probably ought to- You still have to register... you probably ought to check it out.
• 4:12
You make a profile on their website. It saves them a bunch- Yeah... of work, so don't be a jerk. Yeah. Yeah. Right. You can do it on your phone if you have to while you're waiting in line.
• 4:19
And if you live in River West, you're already a VIP. Right. Right. Yeah. So that's, uh, that's the last, uh, weekend in July, 20- 29th? 29th, 30th, yeah. 29th and 30th, so. Should be the 26th.
• 4:30
But now, you're gonna wanna be there a day after tomorrow, uh, to register if you wanna do this thing. Now, to be fair- To be fair...
• 4:38
you do not have to register because [laughs] you can just come and ride your bike anyway. Right. Right. All the, all the bonus checkpoints this year are gonna be open to people. Yep. Anybody that wants to do them.
• 4:49
But you can buy a shirt. You can buy a shirt. If you register, you get a shirt. It's like, might as well register. You're buying a shirt already. Spoke cards. Spoke card. Which we may have a bonus checkpoint here.
• 4:58
Buy a spoke card. Yeah, you get a spoke card. Spoke card. And if you volunteer, you get another T-shirt. Well, since the, uh, since the, uh, VIPs are from the last three years, is anybody gonna get in that's not a VIP?
• 5:09
I don't know if it is the last three years. It is. It is? It is. Oh, then, oh, yeah, then. James, [laughs] hopefully we- Hey, hey, welcome to the radio program, caller. Who do we have on the line?
• 5:20
[laughs] Well, there, how are you guys? Uh, we're doing well. Oh, good. Good. Stop texting. Thanks for calling in. Talk to you guys in a while. Tell us who you are. Who is this? [laughs] This is good.
• 5:30
What are you wearing? You don't know? Really? Oh, we know. Oh. I don't know, I don't know if our listener knows. Probably. It's Chewy, folks. Well, yes. The listener does know me.
• 5:40
[laughs] We went to different schools together. Yeah.
• 5:43
Chewy, I, I have to let you know that I'm, I'm in training for the River West 24, and what I mean by that is I'm loading up my electric bike with batteries, but I'm not using them, so the extra weight of the bike is making me work harder.
• 5:57
[laughs] I have a new e-bike story for you. All right. Fine. [laughs] I was riding home from, uh, a clinic appointment, and a guy came by on a... Cut in front of me on a, an older version, the ones that had the, um,
• 6:11
the battery pack was built into a rack that went on the back of the bike. Remember those? Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. And, uh, and he kinda buzzed by me, and I caught up to him, and he goes, "Bet you wish you had one of these."
• 6:22
And I go, "Well, actually, it's an electric b- it's a motorized vehicle, so get the fuck off my trail." [laughs] [laughs] And he looks, he looks at me and he goes, "What do you mean your trail?"
• 6:31
I said, "Seems to me I remember getting drunk one night and Trevor Olsen and I standing in the middle of the trails in, in like two feet of snow and declaring all that trail system out there ours."
• 6:41
[laughs] So I kicked him off my trail. Seems legit. Do you still, do you still see Trevor ever? Is he out that way? Trevor ever? Trevor ever? [laughs] Um, he hasn't been... He hasn't...
• 6:50
Well, when we get out that way I try to go up and see him, but, uh, he's only been back here, like, maybe once or twice in the last couple years, and pretty much blows in, then heads up to Hayward with, uh, a couple buddies that got a cabin up there.
• 7:00
So I really don't get a chance to see him. He's fast now. I mean, not... He never, never was fast, but he's, he's still really fast. On a bike he got
• 7:08
second place in the Whiskey, um, what was it, like, three weekends ago I think it was. Wow. Tom Prescott. That's moving. Yeah, he's fast. He's... He looks good. He looks... He's fit. He makes me mad.
• 7:19
[laughs] But- Did you ever see that, uh, the white Teasdale frame he had that I, I think he ran into a tree or hit a rock or something that blew open the down tube? Yep. Yeah. [laughs] Yep, yep. Wow.
• 7:30
Um, Teasdale fixed that twice for him, I think. Yeah? So it's all right. Yeah. It, it, it broke and then he broke it again, but it wasn't the same spot. It was a different spot, I think. Yeah, must just
• 7:41
smashing it into something. Well, and didn't it have kind of an odd geometry to it, like, uh, um, the head tube angle was something funky? I don't remember what it was.
• 7:52
Nah, that w- that was a long time ago, that's for sure. So what do you got go- So do you guys realize that it... Sorry, go ahead. I was just gonna say, what do you got going on up there in, uh, Rochester?
• 8:04
Well, tomorrow, um, when this comes out, so tomorrow is, um, the, uh, Decorah Time Trial reunion ride. Right on. Decorah. We did, we did mention that. Oh, we just talked about that. Yeah. Hmm.
• 8:16
You know, but you know what else is going on the- Oh, are we today? Yeah, we were, we were talking about that saying, "Yeah, you should go out there and check that out 'cause it's tomorrow." Yeah.
• 8:24
Also, also at, in, uh- Um, we-... in Decorah is that Toppling, Toppling Goliath, uh, Assassin release party. Huh? Yes. Is that the same weekend? Yeah, apparently. Oh, Jesus.
• 8:36
Uh, It's gonna be a mess there because there's also a- Sweet... uh, a hero run on the, on the trails for, um, uh, it's like, you know, a fundraiser for fire department, um, policemen type of thing. So it's gonna be...
• 8:49
That town's gonna be hopping this weekend. Yeah. But I have a place to stay, so I'm okay with that. You're good. And if you need one, there's... And if you need one, there's a place for you guys to stay too.
• 8:57
Well, I, I was thinking that it- There's a couple... this would be a better weekend to go up there than last weekend, so I may have left already. Um- I'm not sure. [laughs] Yeah.
• 9:06
I may be driving there right now for all you know. How am I doing? That's right. How am I doing today? [laughs] That's right. You're, you're on your way, right? Yeah.
• 9:12
Um, you just need to let me know what time you're gonna get there today so I can be ready for you. Oh. [dogs barking] So is that my dogs? Well, it's not ours. [laughs] Yeah.
• 9:23
[laughs] We're in a factory building and it's not- You gotta let the dogs out. Yeah. [laughs] Is that girlfriend?
• 9:29
[laughs] So I was, uh, I was moving around your, uh, your my ECR frame today trying to figure out where I'm gonna get wheels and stuff to build that thing up one of these days. Oh, yeah, that, that's...
• 9:41
I never thought about that part of it. That's not gonna be easy, is it? Um, I've got a set of rims.
• 9:46
Oh, you're s- you're- If I'm gonna make it a, you know, a 29 plus, which w- be a little bit of a trick to find tires bigger than 2.8 anymore, but I've got some Stan's Hugo rims that are pretty wide.
• 9:57
It should be good for the, that part of it. Just gotta find some other parts and stuff. Parts and stuff. We're moving the- We're moving the- I could look around. I might have a...
• 10:05
Ac- I might have it, actually, have a set of, uh, rabbits running around here someplace. Um, I might be able to, might be able to talk some business on. Right on. Rabbit holes. Be right. Rabbit rims. Rabbit holes.
• 10:16
Rabbit holes. Yep. Ra- rabbit holes. Rabbit rims. I just call them rabbit rims. The other rabbit holes, yes. We just, uh, we just did a couple- Well, I've got a gold set, but you can't... I do have a gold set.
• 10:24
You can't have those. I haven't decided what to put those on yet. It would look kinda cool on that frame, but not necessarily.
• 10:30
Oh, yeah, I, I, I'm not so sure that's not why Tanner came up with the idea in the first place. Then, then he gave it to his... Then he gave the frame to his mom so that never [laughs]...
• 10:40
And it was my job to build it, which never happened. Well, it's, it is, uh, moving around the shop because we're moving the shop again to a different spot in the same building. Yes, we're all moving again. We're...
• 10:52
Yeah, James is moving as well. Is this- James is here today... is this spot three or four? This is spot, like, well, I... The original shop on Locust, then the... And it's, I guess, the third.
• 11:03
It's really the fourth 'cause we were in the nut factory forever, and we're still in there too, though, so. Okay, okay. I think it's actually gonna be a better version of a shop than the one that we're moving
• 11:13
300 feet from north to the new place. Right. I think it's gonna be better. Greg and I will be, uh, neighbors- Are you- Yeah... like we always wanted to be. Are you able to move your booth? [laughs] Move what?
• 11:24
Can you move your, your, uh, podcasting booth? Well- Or is that gonna be disassembled and moved? It, it, no, it, it- It already moved... right now it's in a different room.
• 11:32
It, that one we already moved, but, uh, I don't know what's gonna happen up here. We're at this...
• 11:36
We're on the second floor up here now, which is sort of a no man's land because the elevator doesn't work, and, uh- It's pretty narrow, tall stairway... there, yeah, there's...
• 11:46
The stairway is kinda sketchy and- That's, that's, that's every... That, that statements everybody in their room. [laughs] Right, yeah.
• 11:53
[laughs] I tell you what, Chewie, actually, if we did wanna move the podcast, um, uh, or do it in an alternate location, I'm building in, um, rehearsal and recording studios,
• 12:04
so- Uh, yeah, we could move down there and be right next to the bike shop if we wanted to Yeah, that'll be right, right across the hallway Quiet, too.
• 12:12
Yeah Otherwise, we got- we have this little, um, office room that was the warehouse manager's or something that c- could also be the room Yeah JK is poised. We're almost there. [bell ringing] Oh, there we are.
• 12:24
We're at the top of the hill. [laughs] Bravo, bravo, bravo It's all timing, you know?
• 12:29
We'll let- That's producing Let's start with Chewy We'll, we'll let, uh, we'll let, we'll let Chewy tell us first what he's got at the top of the hill [laughs] I'm...
• 12:37
I found a, it's a, uh, a, hang on, I'm just gonna spell it and have you guys say it. It's a Blau, Blauweijs. Uh, B-L-A-U weijs Blauweijs Um, it was [laughs] it was left over from the, uh, Costco, um,
• 12:51
uh, advent calendar beers. Yeah So it's a German beer. It's, uh, it's actually pretty tasty. Th- you know what?
• 12:56
I've done this as my third year buying those boxes, and I can honestly say I haven't had a bad beer out of the batch yet. Oh. There's 24 beers in a box? Yep. You know, and it's like an advent calendar.
• 13:06
You gotta, you gotta find the date and pop it open and then pull the can out and surprise yourself with a beer. It's actually kinda cool. And like it's a- That is cool. I never saw that at Costco. Damn it Yeah, it, it...
• 13:15
I think they do the same thing with, like, wine and have, like, a four ounce- Oh, I think it's-... thing of James Suite... I think it started with, uh, actually started with shots of booze, I think Yeah, I think so, too.
• 13:24
[laughs] Yeah. That's genius Little airplane bottles of goodness Yeah So while, while we, uh, we'll, we'll go to James next, but I did wanna mention that, uh, we got Mr. Slobowski waiting in the green room as well.
• 13:38
So, uh, once we get through this- Great... this talking of our, our booza haul, we'll probably bring Dave into the conversation here
• 13:48
All right James, you wanna tell us about your non, non-beer, uh, top of the hill- Your spirit... spirit?
• 13:54
My top of the hill spirit, uh, it, many of you, if we've hung out, know I'm a whiskey guy Mm-hmm And I like sipping it on the rocks and getting whatever I can and tasting the varieties.
• 14:04
Uh, this one I found a nice little gem that was actually very inexpensive at, um, our local Pick 'n Save, local grocery. Um, it's $15.99 for a th- the three-quarter liter decorative flat bottle.
• 14:21
I tell you what, it's really smooth, really enjoyable to drink, and tastes like more like a 30 or $35 bottle Whiskey sisses. Like, yeah. It tastes like whiskey sisses. [laughs] Peaty or not peaty? Not peaty at all.
• 14:34
Nice Straight Kentucky bourbon I like it Yes What is the brand? Cooper's Mark Cooper's Mark He texted that to me Yeah.
• 14:42
Well, he didn't text it to me, so I had to ask him again Well, and I didn't say it immediately, too, so now you all know. [laughs] Now it's recorded for prosperity Yes Now it belongs to the ages.
• 14:53
And JK brought the rest of the show beer. Yeah. What'd you bring, JK? A variety pack from Lagunitas- Lagunitas...
• 15:01
with the very clever spelling of the Variety PA pack I didn't really notice it was all IPAs, but that was- Yeah... fortuitous But that's awesome Yeah, exactly.
• 15:11
I mean, yeah, and speaking, it was a, well, Metro market, which is also a Kroger brand, and that's where I got that one Right Like they need money or, or [laughs]
• 15:21
a bump from us on that Yeah, like they need the free advertising But I, it, it's one of the places that actually has, like, craft beer in a cooler- Right... and it's accessible on the way here, [laughs]
• 15:31
so when I don't think of it or... [laughs] Well, if anybody's curious what's in it, the, the show notes are on, the, will be on the webpage site there Yeah, it's like a progression of...
• 15:40
We had the, the starter was this, uh, kinda baby All Day IP- not All Day, but- Daytime Daytime Daytime. Similar to an All Day 4%. You know, a ta- Three carbs Yeah, whatever.
• 15:51
It's trying to get- You list carbs on a beer, I'm immediately turned off Yeah. I know. I need my bread.
• 15:55
I need my liquid bread Pork chop on a can But then I guess it kinda works from, like, next ones are, like, s- what we're doing now is the Hazy, which is 6%, and then I think the next one is 6.2- Mm... just a normal IPA.
• 16:05
And then the Little Sun, I notice, is a 7.5. That's just a little sneak attack one, man. Oh, boy. [laughs] And, and, and- Oh, nice... caveat emptor, you know?
• 16:15
Well, since you're already at the top of the hill, I mean, it sounds like you're ramping up to go down the ski jump Yeah, right? [laughs] That's the S slide part. Yeah, exactly. All right.
• 16:23
Like, "Hey, you got any of that Cooper's left?" And I'm, "Wee, let's go." [laughs] Mr. Slobowski can join, too, at the same time Yeah. Well, he can, we can...
• 16:30
Chewy, do you wanna hang out, or do you wanna, uh, let us get Dave going, or what, what do you wanna do? No, I, I, I'll hang out and listen if you guys don't mind All right, all right. Okay.
• 16:39
Well, uh- Yeah, you're welcome, Chewy Hey, uh- Can you make it work? Yeah, we had... Hey, hey, hey, welcome to the radio program caller. We know who's on the line. It, it i- it's Mr., Mr. Dave. Hi, Dave. Seely Dave.
• 16:50
Seely Dave. Yeah. Can you hear me? Yep. Yep. Yes. Hi, Dave Got me? Got ya Se- Seely Dave is in the house All right Or on the horn or however you call it You're in the bosom Been a, been a minute since we talked to you.
• 17:02
What's, uh, what's happening up in Seelyville? Yeah. Well, a lot. Um, it, uh... It's the Hungry Bear 100. Our, the gravel, uh, race that I run is this weekend.
• 17:15
I got about 360 people signed up, so I'm sort of, like, deep into that. Um, I was out marking the course today. The course has never been marked in the past, but I just, I'm just trying to, uh, a little bit.
• 17:28
Um, I'm pounding little arrows, uh, with a couple of long spike nails into the gravel. Um, and then I'll go back and clean them up. Just one at each turn. Nothing, nothing major, but...
• 17:39
So yeah, so I got that coming up, but all is good with that it seems like. Um, I have a couple other things though that are, uh, uh, w- and I'm, registration's closed, so I'm not taking day outs or anything like that.
• 17:54
So, um, so either you're coming or you're not. Um, but, uh, start time is at 8:00, um, but I'm allowing people to start later, and then there's, like, a Google Form for that.
• 18:05
If they wanna start later, they just put in what time they started, and I'll mash the two together afterwards and sort of come up with the actual results Right on.
• 18:16
So they could start an hour later and you just take that into consideration and- Yeah. Origi- uh, you know, this is my first year running it, and I guess traditionally it started at 10.
• 18:27
Um, but, you know, I just watched the Bear 100, uh, last weekend, and the, the times for that, and there were people coming in off the 100-mile course at 11 and a half, 12 hours.
• 18:39
And if I start at 10:00 AM, my, the pizza place where we have our sorta after thing will be closed, 'cause they [laughs] they close at, like, 8:30, so.
• 18:49
[laughs] So I wanted to move it up a little bit, um, and, uh, just let people, you know, start a little bit earlier, which most people seem to, uh, be into.
• 18:58
So I think the official start time is 8:00, um, and I think probably 70% of people are gonna start around 8:00. Um, but, uh, the rest of them will start later, so. But that's all good, so.
• 19:11
Yeah, well, hope that goes well. I guess if- But-... uh, you, you did a lot of this planning much earlier in the year, so it's kind of sort of almost on autopilot now. Well, I, all the course marking.
• 19:22
There's, I still gotta get, you know, uh, stuff. I, I managed to come up with, uh, volunteer fire department's come up with, like, five guys with a pickup and a ATV to, to sort of be out on course.
• 19:32
Just there's, traditionally, this course has not had any mechanical or medical support, but again, I'm trying to just sort of raise the, the bar just a little bit, and so they're gonna be out on course.
• 19:42
So I'm printing, you know, detailed cue sheets for them so they can figure it out and stuff.
• 19:48
You know, there's not a lot of cell coverage on much of this course, so if, if people have a problem, they're kind of on their own. And I don't want them to rely on these guys, but I'd just like a little fail-safe.
• 20:02
That's a good idea. Yeah. So is, is the course just a complete one lap that's 100 miles long, or is it a, is it a loop? There's two courses. There's the Hungry Bear and the Snacking Bear. The Hungry Bear is 100 miles.
• 20:15
The Snacking Bear is 60. Next year I think I'm gonna add a, a 30 mile. I just like the idea of three bears, and then I got a guy- [laughs]...
• 20:23
making a T-shirt for me that, relative to the three bears, Goldilocks on a gravel bike being chased by three bears. Right. Right. Sl- slides right in. Yeah, yeah, yeah. [laughs] I'll be, I'll be, I'll be Baby Bear.
• 20:34
But is- But here- Is it just a single loop? Is it 100 miles one loop, or? Yeah. They're both, they're both single loops. Wow. Yeah, they're both single loops. Wow. Yeah. That's impressive. Yeah.
• 20:44
It's, it's easy to do up here with all the gravel we've got, you know. Um, so, um, but the other couple things I just want to mention to you guys, um, one is just a weird little aside.
• 20:56
So it's spring, and I had read this really cool book, Braiding Sweetgrass, um, uh, uh, which was written by this woman that wanted to become, like, a, a, a biologist, a Native American woman.
• 21:07
But, um, so she became a scientist, but was
• 21:11
frustrated that it sort of like science didn't, didn't take into account any of the sort of traditional, her traditional understandings of nature and her relationship with nature and all that sort of stuff.
• 21:23
So she wrote this book about it, and one of the chapters she talks about amphibians and how in the early spring after, like, the first big rain, amphibians all, like frogs and salamanders and stuff like that, migrate back to the pond where they were born.
• 21:41
And, and you can, if you catch them at the right time, there'll be, like, thousands, because over the years, all kinds of amphibians come out of one pond. Wow.
• 21:50
There'll be thousands of, like, salamanders and frogs and stuff all heading to the same pond, and it's really cool. Um, it's also bad because with modern roads and stuff, a lot of them get killed now because- Sure...
• 22:02
they're trying to cross highways- Yeah, squished... to get back to their ponds. You plant frogger. Yeah. So I, I kinda missed the first spring rains and stuff.
• 22:10
It was sort of weird with our weird extended winter this year. I couldn't quite tell if spring was here or not. [laughs] Um, so I missed that migration.
• 22:20
But last night we had a really warm, heavy, heavy, like, rain for two hours.
• 22:26
So I went out after that around 9:00 and went down to the pond where I live, and I, the, the, the noise from the frogs, from the spring peepers, was so loud, it almo- it hurt my ears literally.
• 22:40
I took out, I've got, like, a DB meter on my phone from, like- Yeah... you know, if I'm at a concert and I wanna just make sure I'm not damaging my ears even worse than they are, and it was 95 DB- [laughs] Wow...
• 22:54
at the edge of the pond. And that's outside, too. Wow. Yeah. Yeah, that's- Outside. Isn't that crazy? Yeah, that's amazing. Right. Yeah. Yeah. It was cool. Um, all right.
• 23:03
So that's that 100- That's, that's actually the same level that when, when James' band is practicing, that's the same level that it's in- [laughs] Yeah... it's in the service area of the shop. I think that's past 95.
• 23:13
Because, well, he's, he's not quite- Right... he's not quite done, uh, soundproofing the room yet, so we were like, "Yeah, that's, uh, that's 95 in the shop." [laughs] Right.
• 23:20
My neighbors get to listen to good music whether they like it or not. [laughs] Yeah. I, I wonder, I wonder what shellac was when they would, like, light off- Oh... you know, fireworks and play at the same time.
• 23:31
It, I, I often actually left the, the club when they did that until the fireworks were over, the firecrackers were over, because it, it was so loud. It really was painful. But- I stayed for every one of them...
• 23:43
I w- I wonder what that was. I stayed for every one of those shows. [laughs] I loved it. Did, did... Are you using earplugs now at concerts? I am. Yeah. Well, it- What? Sort... What? [laughs] Yeah, I don't know.
• 23:54
Sometimes- Ah. [laughs] That's like the Ministry show. I didn't really wanna use them. I wanted to hear it, but it's like, eh, I'll just shove them in for half of it or something. Yeah. Right.
• 24:02
As long as I'm not, like, up against the monitor. Right, where you're getting the real sound pressure that's gonna really- Yeah... just blow your out, out. Yeah. I've already done years of that. I did a- Oh...
• 24:11
yeah, yeah. Way too many years of that, and then I had, like, a three-year fun time of, like, tinnitus with a- Mm... complete hmm. Oh, yeah. Like, all day, all time. Ugh. Ugh. That, that, yeah. No fun.
• 24:26
No fun, but Well, small price to pay. I got through it. [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] Build up some earwax, flush it out of the bowel as well.
• 24:34
So that was like, that was kind of a weird, that was kind of a weird little aside, uh, about that just because it happened just last night, but, um, or the night before.
• 24:42
But, um, but so the other thing that I wanted to talk, mention to you guys is, um, you know, since I moved up here, I don't know, I think I may have mentioned it to Gregor, so I'm like, I find it weird.
• 24:53
I mean, I know that cycling is generally, especially bike racing, is generally like kind of like a white guy sport, you know? It's mo- it's all white guys except for like 25% women or something.
• 25:05
It, it, but it's all, it's mostly white. Yeah. Right? And, and, and so that's even more pronounced up here I think.
• 25:13
Um, and then I started thinking about it like, like I don't know why that is because the riding up here, the recreational riding here is so amazing.
• 25:23
Like why don't we attract more people of color from like Minneapolis or even Duluth is, you know, and Milwaukee, Madison.
• 25:30
You know, why do they stop visiting, they, they don't go further than like Wausau or the Dells or something? Uh, you know, I don't know.
• 25:37
So I reached out to, um, just kinda cold called, um, uh, Brooke Goudey, Devin Collins, and Alexandra Houchen, um, and asked them, I don't know if you're, you guys know who they are. Alexandra probably- Yeah, uh...
• 25:52
everybody knows who she is. Yeah, definitely know who Alexandra is. [laughs] Right. Um, Alexandra, she's, you know, obviously set a bunch of records on, you know, Tour Divide single speed, rides for Chumba.
• 26:04
She's from Wisconsin, Native American woman. Um, non-traditional racer in every sense of the word. Yeah. Um, but super cool. Super cool.
• 26:13
I knew her briefly for a minute back when she was a, a career for Scram back in Madison when, um, I, uh, a long time ago. But, um, so and then, um, Brooke Goudey is a, a NICA coach, a Black woman.
• 26:28
Um, started out as a downhill. She's from the South, but now lives in Colorado.
• 26:33
Started out as a downhill mountain biker and then got into bike packing and now she is, and also into equity stuff, and she is like, you know, on the cover of, you know, whatever, Bicycling Magazine I think just did a big feature on her and stuff.
• 26:47
She's like a big influencer and super cool. And then Devin Collins is a Black woman from Atlanta. She's part of that RAR group, that Radical Adventure Riders, as well as Black Women Do Bike I think down there.
• 27:00
And she is like an equity organizer for cycling who also got into bike packing, um, even though she started out very urban.
• 27:09
And, um, and, uh, she's coincidentally right now, um, uh, uh, over in Italy, um, being quarantined. She was, um- [laughs]...
• 27:20
riding a bike packing trip with Lael Wilcox and some other women, and then ended up with COVID when she got tested- Yeah... to come back home, and so she's sitting there in quarantine waiting to come home.
• 27:32
So she's, she's stuck in Italy. Stuck in Italy. Oh, my gosh. Poor thing.
• 27:37
Poor And I reached out, cold called three of those women and said, "Hey, if, if I could throw some money at this from my Hungry Bear race and from the Tour de Showamegon profits, would you guys come up with some sort of cool equity program to try to like promote this area to riders that don't ever seem to visit here?"
• 27:57
And so I was surprised all three of 'em are into it. Sweet. Um, so- Nice... um, I just talked with Brooke today. Um, I couldn't talk with Dev 'cause she's obviously stuck in Italy.
• 28:09
Um, but, um, and Alexandra was gonna come for the Hungry Bear, but I- nine just last second offered her a free ticket out to Red Bull Formation in, in Utah, so she's, she's out there.
• 28:23
Um, but all three of those really cool women, uh, influencers, um, awesome, amazing riders are working with us on some sort of like yet to be determined, [laughs] um, uh, b- bound to be cool equity program to try to promote riding up here, specifically bike packing and gravel riding, to like a more diverse audience.
• 28:47
So I just- Nice... thought I'd mention that 'cause I just- Yeah. Awesome... kinda confirmed it today. I was kinda stoked about it. Yeah. Well, you're- Oh, yeah...
• 28:54
I mean, in your retirement you're doing a lot of good stuff. [laughs] Yeah, yeah. As a raging and, uh, outspoken activist- Well, that's the-... um, I can very much appreciate that...
• 29:02
possible quote for a good tagline, right? On the... So yeah. So that's kinda all I got, but I was kinda stoked about that today.
• 29:10
Uh, and I got that call right after I finished all the marking for the gravel course, so I was stoked about being done with marking, course marking- [laughs] Right... and, and stoked to talk to- Yeah...
• 29:20
stoked that Brooke gave me a, a holler back and, and confirmed that they're all in. So I'm pretty psyched. Yeah, it sounds great.
• 29:27
Well, uh, definitely keep us posted 'cause I think there's definitely a need for it, and, um, you know, some of the NICA teams around here, they're getting more of the, you know, people of color, urban people into just even being able to go out as far as, you know, f- 20 miles from Milwaukee to do mountain bike races, and a lot of them are doing- Right...
• 29:48
the, the NICA series from, um, Milwaukee public schools, which are predominantly now- Right... people of color.
• 29:54
Well, that's one more little, that's one more little angle that I've got, uh, 'cause I, I apparently can't stop thinking about new things, new ideas. [laughs] Um, there's a cool neighborhood kid here who's a NICA racer.
• 30:08
He's pretty darn fast as most of those NICA racers are. Um, Arlo, and, um, he's about 15 I think. He's, he's very well-spoken.
• 30:17
He's a really nice guy, and he knows every freaking road around here 'cause he grew up here, you know. Um, so I've asked him if he would be a, a ride guide on the Tour de Showamegon, and he was stoked about it.
• 30:30
I s- and his parents are interested too. I gotta meet with them after the Hungry Bear. Um, they haven't met me yet, but, um, they kn- I know-... friends of, uh, of his parents, and so people vouched for me.
• 30:43
Um, I'm not just some crazy guy [laughs] talking to underage kids- Right... about going out in the woods camping with me, but, but I thought- Right...
• 30:50
that's another group that, you know, I'd like to get out doing the bike packing thing, you know? 'Cause they're all such strong riders, these NICA kids. Yeah. Yeah, just ripping. Yeah. So. Yeah.
• 31:02
What were you saying, James? Um- So that's, that's what I- Yeah, I do have a suggestion for, a couple suggestions for you, Dave, uh, just as far as more in closer reference to, like, Milwaukee area. Um,
• 31:14
I would suggest not only Milwaukee Rec., uh, because, uh, all of us in this room, uh, are personal friends with, uh, two people who work in Milwaukee Rec., Joseph Schu- Schuler and Berta Gl- Glodowski. Yep.
• 31:28
Um, but also, uh, there's another organization that organizes, uh, group youth activities, uh, and they're obviously bigger than Milwaukee, but COA. Um, those might be- Oh, sure. Yeah Yeah. I'm familiar with.
• 31:44
Those might be two to reach out to- I mean, yeah... in order to maybe organize a longer trip or- Yeah, to get them out into the, into the wild, so to speak. Yes. Yes.
• 31:53
Yeah, I was actually surprised that our local NICA team was gonna... They picked Cable to go to for one of our races and- That's awesome...
• 32:00
you know, it's just, it's a six-hour drive up there, and I was just a little surprised they didn't try and stick a little closer to home, 'cause- Right...
• 32:07
uh, so w- we're, we're coming up to the, the first NICA race of the year is up in Cable [laughs], so [laughs] we'll be up there. Oh, the first one is the one up here? Yeah. Yeah, that's the first one. Oh. When...
• 32:19
Remind me. When is that, Greg? I, I know I have it on my calendar, but it- Uh, it's September sometime, and you, your place was already taken, so we ha- we went with another place called- Right...
• 32:26
Start Line or something. I don't know. She seems very nice, and, uh- Oh, yeah... so- Start Line, yeah. Those guys are awesome. Yeah.
• 32:32
So we're gonna, we're gonna be staying there instead of your place, but we'll be in the neighborhood. But Dave, you haven't said what you're drinking. Yeah. [laughs] What's, what's your top of the hill?
• 32:45
[laughs] Are we at the top of another hill? [laughs] Yeah. Yeah, Tony was talking real quietly over there, un- unlike Tony saying- Unlike Tony... uh, "What is Dave drinking at the top of the hill?"
• 32:55
[laughs] Um, I, I have a Pseudo Sue- Ooh, okay... with a Hornitos back. Ooh. Ooh. Hey. Pseudo Sue is pretty much the best beer ever made. Oh, it's so good. That's a winner, winner, chicken dinner.
• 33:10
Yeah, I think- One of the zombie dust. Pseudo Sue... we mentioned this. I- Chewy's still on the horn, I think. We mentioned that, uh, Toppling Goliath has a, a bottle release party for their Assassin 2022
• 33:20
double something Imperial Porter this weekend, but I'm still thinking- Oh, that's-... of going there for... Well, I think I already went there. Did I [laughs] go there already? Um, because- Been down your way...
• 33:29
Toppling Goliath is in Decorah, so b- and that's where this, uh- Don't topple off the bar stool... the time trial, uh, reunion is. That's right. So, uh, boy howdy, do I love a Pseudo Sue. King Sue, a little bit- Yeah...
• 33:41
chaps my butt a little too much, but [laughs]... Those bad boys are harsh. Well, I- Loving... I, I have to, I have to recommend the, the, um, Hornitos tequila back.
• 33:50
I think that's a, it's a nice, nice little chaser to your pseudo. Reposado? Yeah, is it a Blanco, Reposado, Añejo? What, what, uh- I'm doing the Reposado with, the Reposado with, uh- That's where it's at. Yes...
• 34:03
right on. Right on. Yeah. Well, make sure you have it when I come back up there, because that sounds like a tasty beverage. All right. [laughs] All right, Dave. All right.
• 34:10
Good to, good to hear from you, and we'll, uh- Okay... don't be such a stranger. Yeah. Thanks, guys. We'll catch up with you soon. All right, will do. Okay. Adios. Adios. Bye. Adios. Thanks, Dave. Bye. All right, Chewy.
• 34:20
How are you? Did you get an earful, Chewy? He's... Boy, he's, he's pretty ambitious in his retirement. I don't- By gosh, it almost seems like he's doing a lot more work than when he was working.
• 34:28
Yeah, I'm getting slacker. [laughs] [laughs] Well, I, he's, he's a... You know, when we went up there for the, uh, um, for the Fat Birky, that was the first time I really got face to face with the guy. Love the guy.
• 34:37
He's fantastic. He's such a nice guy. He needs to slow down, though. There's no reason to work that hard. [laughs] Yeah. Gravel, gravel- Danny's got an ear beating you and-...
• 34:45
gravel races aren't supposed, gravel races aren't supposed to be marked a- and courses and all that other kind of shit. [laughs] Just get up and ride your bike through gravel.
• 34:52
[laughs] It's kind of making me feel like I'm not doing enough in my non-retirement, let alone when I get retired, 'cause- [laughs] Yeah... I'm gonna be do- I'm not doing shit when I'm [laughs] retired.
• 35:01
I wanna do, I wanna do- Oh, I'm gonna do shit... I wanna do, yeah, I wanna do- Lots of fun stuff... I wanna do cool shit when I retire. Yeah, right. I don't wanna- Like, go for a bike ride and not care. Right, exactly.
• 35:09
Or not worry about the fuck I gotta get done. Sorry. Right. I had a bad day at work. Well, that's different than not working. That's what I'm saying. I had a bad day at work. This is, this is great- I know, but had a-...
• 35:16
you and I talked about this... I was supposed to have a meeting today that got postponed to tomorrow, so yeah. All right. Feel like I got a hot tub. All right, Chewy, you got anything you wanna leave us with?
• 35:25
'Cause we're getting the hell out of here. Oh, Wheaties. I got, I got nothing. I'll see you tomorrow. Oh, and one thing I wanna, uh- [laughs]...
• 35:30
just check in with, uh, because you have, uh, two hours worth of, uh, show coming up. Are you gonna get that handled- Yeah... so we can get that split up and- I, I emailed you the splits- Oh, okay. Cool...
• 35:43
just before I called in. Oh, right on. Um, it's hard to do. How is it, why is, why is it one minute telling you, you, you just step in there and say you're gonna split is harder than doing a fucking podcast?
• 35:52
I don't know, because you can just ramble on- It's hard... with your normal Chewy talk when you're just doing your thing. But when you actually- Yeah... have to think about it, it's a little harder. Mm-hmm. All right.
• 36:01
And then we're gonna, and then, you know, now that my hip is better, we're gonna get back into biking, so we'll get a biking podcast one of these days. Right on. Maybe.
• 36:07
Oh, I got one of the, I got one of those- I can go for a ride on one of those... I got one of the State 420 bikes- I'd rather litter, dude, than talk... on the way, too, by the way. Get in good shape.
• 36:13
[laughs] Oh, you did get one. I didn't think you were going to. It's on its way. I, I, I had to order, I had to order another bike for a customer, so I'm like, "Ah, just throw that 420 bike on there, too," so. Wow.
• 36:24
If you, if you're interested, there might be a guy in Decorah that wants it. Oh, okay. Well, that would be... I mean, I, I don't think it'll get here before I left earlier this morning, but it might. [laughs] Yeah.
• 36:34
I, I, I don't think, I don't think he's in a rush. He just, he just brought it up at our club meeting, so, um, and I didn't have one 'cause I didn't, I- I, I wasn't that crazy, Mom, so I didn't get one I just liked...
• 36:44
I wanna try the, it's got different tires on it than the other ones. I'm like, "Well, maybe those tires are better. I don't know." Right. Yeah, yeah. So you bought a whole bike just to check the tires out? Yeah. Okay.
• 36:51
Are there tires getting better? I don't know. Well, no, because I remember they had the, the- By the way, an upgrade- Oh, yeah, they're better than that... yeah, an upgrade to Conquer... that Megalith. Oy.
• 37:00
Yeah, the, their, the State- Oy, it's Conquer... when, when State had the, their Megalith fat bike, they had some horrible tires on that.
• 37:06
[laughs] It was an immediate upgrade to put a decent, you know, Surly, uh, uh, even a, a, a Larry- I think it was Larry before... or something. It was just so much better. Yeah, it was a La- a Larry and an Enor. Enor.
• 37:15
Yeah, 'cause they were, they were, that was pretty early. But that, it was, they were horrible. With rips of tires and- Anyway. Yeah. Oh, yeah. It was like 35 pounds at least. Ugh.
• 37:23
[laughs] I mean, it wa- and I mean, I know I sound, like, hyperbolic on it, but nah. Oh, yeah. It wa- [laughs] it, it wa- The bike was 35 pounds... it was absolutely just, oh. Oh.
• 37:32
I'm like, "I'm riding my bike, but it really is a pain in the ass." I'm like, "I don't know about this." Like the ones that were on Kim's, uh, Neapolitan bike? Originally, yeah. Yeah.
• 37:41
Now she's got, now she's stole Mike's wheels, so she's, she's living. Yeah. She's living. All right, Chewy, well, uh- [laughs]... we'll catch up with you soon- All right...
• 37:47
and I'll take a listen to those things and- Good seeing you guys. Yep. Good seeing you. I'll let you go. I'll talk to you guys later. All right, bye. All right, later, Chewy. Ah. All right.
• 37:55
Best, best part about seeing Chewy on a podcast- What do you mean?... don't gotta see Chewy in real life. [laughs] Take that one, Chewy. Brr, bing bong. Bing bong.
• 38:02
[laughs] Uh, one thing I would've mentioned before we go, and then we're gonna go, is that Fat Tire Tour Milwaukee is June 18th, and it's some Milwaukee Shop of Horrors, cockamamie event, but- Little Shop, Little Shop of Horrors...
• 38:14
check it out at fattiretour.com. If, if it's a nice day, there'll be 500 people on this thing- Right... and it's gonna be, it's always a good time. So, uh, it's not that far away, unfortunately. Yeah.
• 38:24
I'd like to get some more riding in before it shows up. [laughs] Yeah, g- get the legs back stretched out. Right? Yeah. Well, I, th- th- then we're getting there.
• 38:31
I mean, the, the knee feels a little better now, except moving all that heavy crap around today didn't, [laughs] didn't do it much good. But, uh, all right, every- You know what, you know what is bad to do-...
• 38:40
radio listener... is bowl when you have not been bowling ever since, like, seven years ago. Oh, yeah. Cracking off and, like, ooh, waking up those new muscles. That's when you wanna pull that- Yes, all that stretch...
• 38:52
that's when you wanna pull that eight-pounder off the, uh, the loaner rack, and you're like- Or 10-pounder... yeah, well, the 16's gonna yank your arm out of its socket- Right... if you don't Down with it.
• 39:01
[laughs] It was bad. It was just, all right. Don't get into bowling. We're not getting i- Let's call it. We'll get into bowling speak next time 'cause we can bring all sorts of stuff in. That was a tease.
• 39:08
That was a tease for next week. 'Cause nobody fucking watches this. Next week we're gonna talk about bowling. And the dude abides. [laughs] So we don't have to... [laughs] All right, everybody. Oh.
• 39:15
Next week we'll be back whether you like it or not. [laughs] You like it. [upbeat music]
