- 0:28host. Pastor David. Welcome to Voices of Life,
- 0:35a ministry of the Church for Life. I'm Pastor
- 0:37David. Today we're exploring four remarkable
- 0:39moments in American and world history, all of
- 0:42them happening on August 14th. These events stretch
- 0:45from the early days of our republic to the closing
- 0:48chapter of World War II. And together, they tell
- 0:51a powerful story about America's place in the
- 0:55world. Let's begin. Did you know? that on August
- 1:0014, 1795, President George Washington formally
- 1:05ratified the Jay Treaty. The Jay Treaty was a
- 1:09diplomatic agreement that helped prevent the
- 1:11young United States from being dragged into another
- 1:13war with Great Britain. The document explains
- 1:16that although the treaty was signed in London
- 1:19on November 19, 1794, Washington's act on August
- 1:2414 was the moment the United States officially
- 1:27accepted it. and it so states washington formally
- 1:31ratified it on august fourteenth seventeen ninety
- 1:33five at the time america was still fragile british
- 1:37troops occupied forts in the northwest territory
- 1:40american ships had been seized and unresolved
- 1:44financial disputes lingered from the revolution
- 1:46washington feared that without diplomacy the
- 1:50nation could be pulled into britain's war with
- 1:53the revolutionary france John Jay negotiated
- 1:56the treaty, securing British evacuation of frontier
- 1:59forts, arbitration procedures, and a framework
- 2:02for peaceful commercial relations. But the treaty
- 2:06was controversial. Federalists supported it.
- 2:09Jefferson Republicans fiercely opposed it. Washington
- 2:14himself became the target of public criticism.
- 2:18Yet Washington believed peace was essential for
- 2:22America's survival. His decision reflected a
- 2:25principle that would echo throughout his free
- 2:28or well address. The United States must avoid
- 2:31unnecessary entanglement in European conflicts.
- 2:35The first August 14th reminds us that America's
- 2:41earliest leaders understood something profound.
- 2:44Independence required wisdom, patience, and sometimes
- 2:49an imperfect compromise. Did you know on August
- 2:5314, 1935, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt
- 2:57signed the Social Security Act, one of the most
- 3:00transformative laws in American history. Roosevelt
- 3:04signed it in the White House Cabinet Room at
- 3:07approximately 3 .30 p .m. on August 14, 1935.
- 3:11America was deep in the Great Depression. Millions
- 3:15were unemployed, banks had failed, and older
- 3:18Americans had little or no retirement income.
- 3:21Roosevelt's New Deal sought to stabilize the
- 3:24economy and provide a safety net for the citizens.
- 3:27The original Social Security Act created far
- 3:30more than retirement benefits. It established
- 3:33unemployment insurance aid for dependent children,
- 3:36assistance for the blind and physically handicapped,
- 3:40maternal and child welfare programs, public health
- 3:44initiatives, and the Social Security Board. It
- 3:47was not simply rubber -stamped. The House passed
- 3:51it 372 to 33. The Senate passed it 77 to 6. After
- 3:58conference negotiations, Roosevelt signed the
- 4:01final bill. Importantly, the document reminds
- 4:04us that the 1935 law was not identical to today's
- 4:08Social Security system. Disability insurance,
- 4:11Medicare, and expanded coverage came later. Still,
- 4:15August 14, 1935 marks a turning point. the moment
- 4:19the federal government assumed a larger role
- 4:21in protecting citizens from economic insecurity.
- 4:24It remains central to debates about federalism,
- 4:28personal responsibility, and social insurance.
- 4:31Did you know that between August 9th and 12th,
- 4:361941, and publicly announced on August 14th,
- 4:41President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Prime
- 4:43Minister Winston Churchill met secretly aboard
- 4:46naval vessels in Plencia Bay, Newfoundland, to
- 4:51shape the future of the world. They knew that
- 4:54in the post -war era, there would have to be
- 4:57some strict measures to help everybody get back
- 5:00to where they were prior to the war. So this
- 5:03meeting produced the Atlantic Charter, a joint
- 5:06declaration of principles for the post -World
- 5:08War. It was not... a treaty not a binding agreement
- 5:12and it did not commit the united states to enter
- 5:16world war ii but it became one of the intellectual
- 5:19foundations of the modern international order
- 5:22it had eight principles the charter declared
- 5:26that there'd be no territorial expansions no
- 5:31territorial changes without the consent of the
- 5:33people concerned the right of the people to choose
- 5:36their own government restoration of self -government
- 5:40to those deprived of it, international economic
- 5:44cooperation, freedom from fear and want, freedom
- 5:48of the seas, and disarmament of aggressor nations
- 5:52and a broader system of collective security.
- 5:55These principles would influence the Declaration
- 5:58by the United Nations, the creation of the United
- 6:01Nations post -war independence movements, and
- 6:03the global conversation about self -determination.
- 6:07One of the most moving moments of the Atlantic
- 6:10Conference was a joint church service held aboard
- 6:14HMS Prince of Wales. Roosevelt and Churchill
- 6:17worshiped together with sailors from both nations,
- 6:21singing hymns, reading scripture, and praying
- 6:24for a world free of tyranny. Churchill later
- 6:29said, the service stirred him deeply, especially
- 6:33when the congregation sang, O God, help in the
- 6:37ages past. He believed the moment symbolized
- 6:41the shared spiritual heritage of the English
- 6:44-speaking people and the moral purpose behind
- 6:47their struggle. For Roosevelt, the service reflected
- 6:50the same conviction, that the fight against fascism
- 6:54was not merely political or military, but moral.
- 6:58This August 14th reminds us that even in the
- 7:02darkest days of war, leaders paused to worship
- 7:05to seek God's guidance, and to affirm the spiritual
- 7:08foundations of freedom. Did you know that on
- 7:11August 14, 1945, President Harry S. Truman announced
- 7:19that Japan had accepted Allied surrender terms,
- 7:22though the war was not formally over. He said
- 7:25that Japan had accepted the Postum Declaration
- 7:29and arrangements were being made for the actual
- 7:33signing. Because of the international dateline,
- 7:37Truman's announcement occurred on August 14th
- 7:39in the United States, while Emperor Hirohito's
- 7:43broadcast was heard in Japan on August 15th.
- 7:46The formal surrender ceremony took place later,
- 7:50on September 2nd, 1945, aboard the USS Missouri
- 7:54in Tokyo Bay. Japanese representatives signed
- 7:57the instrument of surrender, and General Douglas
- 8:00MacArthur accepted it for the Allied powers.
- 8:04the final august 14th marks the moment the world
- 8:08began transitioning from a global war toward
- 8:10new international order one shaped in part by
- 8:14the atlantic charter four years earlier across

- 9:05to security to global leadership. Thank you for
