- 0:04Podcast. This is a show where we discuss
- 0:07the critical crossroads that shape SpaceX, Tesla X, The
- 0:11Boring Company, and Neurolink. I'm your host, Will Walden.
- 0:17SpaceX sent its Starship rocket on its 10th test flight this
- 0:20week and pulled off a rare kind of success.
- 0:24Everything broke, but it broke exactly how it was supposed to.
- 0:29Flight 10 launched from Starbase early Tuesday morning and hit
- 0:32every major milestone SpaceX was aiming for.
- 0:36Starship survivor re entry. the Super Heavy booster executed a
- 0:39soft landing in the Gulf, and both vehicles completed
- 0:42controlled descents that gave engineers exactly the data that
- 0:46they were looking for. The mission didn't hurt
- 0:49perfection, though it wasn't supposed to.
- 0:51This time the goal was durability under stress, not
- 0:54flawless execution of a normal mission.
- 0:58Now SpaceX built Flight 10 as a stress test.
- 1:00The company hardened the heat shield, added redundancy across
- 1:03flight systems, and tweaked the booster for reusability rather
- 1:06than single use performance. The results made that
- 1:10engineering philosophy look smart.
- 1:12Starship lost several heat shield tiles and even suffered
- 1:15localized burn throughs, but it kept flying and landed safely.
- 1:19That outcome is more valuable than a pristine flight because
- 1:22it confirms the design can take damage and keep going safely.
- 1:28And Super Heavy's return marked another major step.
- 1:31For the first time, SpaceX lit a subset of Raptor engines during
- 1:35splashdown and attempt in a soft landing on the water.
- 1:38The maneuver was not only successful, but also matched the
- 1:41target time and location with tight precision.
- 1:45Engineers will now examine the booster to determine how much of
- 1:48it survived and whether similar landings can lead to a rapid
- 1:51reusability. Starship's re entry phase was
- 1:54the most aggressive test yet. The vehicle hit Earth's
- 1:58atmosphere at a high angle. It's higher than in previous
- 2:02flights and endured heating levels far above anything it had
- 2:06seen before. Sensors captured how the new
- 2:08heat shield design handled this thermal load in some parts
- 2:12failed and controlled ways that match pre flight predictions.
- 2:15The data will now feed into design changes for flight
- 2:1911/12/13 and even into the Block 3 systems.
- 2:23The flight also proved out several new backup systems.
- 2:27SpaceX installed redundant avionics and control hardware in
- 2:30case of single point failures and during descent.
- 2:33One of those backup pathways kicked in when a guidance system
- 2:36momentarily lost signal vehicle corrected itself in real time.
- 2:40It continued on its course. That kind of fault tolerance is
- 2:44critical for eventual crude missions to the moon and to
- 2:49Mars. Now SpaceX stream the entire
- 2:52flight publicly, of course, but the most useful parts happen
- 2:55behind the scenes. The engineers received terabytes
- 2:59of high fidelity telemetry that will inform the next round of
- 3:03structural, thermal and control updates.
- 3:06This test was about building a rocket that survives even when
- 3:11things go wrong. And a lot of things kind of were
- 3:15made to go wrong in this situation.
- 3:18One reason this flight is important more than the previous
- 3:22ones is its timing. SpaceX is still targeting 2027
- 3:26for a crude lunar landing as part of the Artemis program for
- 3:30NASA. It hit that date.
- 3:32Starship has to prove it can fly.
- 3:35It has to land and it has to fly again with little to no
- 3:38refurbishment. Flight 10 didn't get Starship
- 3:41all the way there, but it made real progress toward that kind
- 3:45of resilience and that kind of flight.
- 3:47And this mission also gave NASA and other stakeholders something
- 3:50they needed evidence. And that's proof that SpaceX can
- 3:54identify failure modes and control them.
- 3:57Starships past test flights have ended an explosion.
- 4:00So last three they lost signals or they had uncontrolled
- 4:03landings. Now this one delivered a stable
- 4:06flight rofile, contained damage within the systems, and lanned
- 4:11system handoffs that all worked as designed.
- 4:14SpaceX has started testing ground systems for rapid turn
- 4:17around, too. New cryogenic propellant loading
- 4:21rigs, water deluge pads, and robotic tile inspection systems
- 4:25are ready, being installed as Star Base.
- 4:28Next phase of testing will focus not just on flight performance,
- 4:32but on how quickly the team can prep Starship for another
- 4:36flight. Flight 10 didn't just advance
- 4:39the rocket, though. It validated a specific mindset.
- 4:44SpaceX is betting that controlled failure builds better
- 4:47hardware than cautious. Success.
- 4:51Strategy only works when the systems are designed to handle
- 4:54those failures without catastrophic consequences.
- 4:58And this time, they handled it with ease.
- 5:01Now Flight 11 is already in its stacking prep.
- 5:05It'll carry the next generation of heat tiles, a tweak booster
- 5:08layout, and more aggressive return profiles.
- 5:12And if Starship keeps surviving increasingly hard conditions,
- 5:16the next big milestone may not be a test flight at all, and may
- 5:20be the first one SpaceX tries to fly again.
- 5:23Now. This flight made the risk feel
- 5:26calculated. That's what matters right now.
- 5:29But in the next flights, they will launch possibly actual
- 5:35Starlink satellites. So with every flight of
- 5:37Starship, SpaceX will be making money and possibly making their
- 5:42money back every time they fly. Now, flight 10, they did some
- 5:47dummy Starlinks and those went very well.
- 5:51If they could do that every flight, they could pay for each
- 5:54one of these flights, one of these test flights with just
- 5:57deploying these Starlinks. That is a huge, gigantic step
- 6:02forward with Spacex's Starlink system and the Starship cargo
- 6:07system for Starlink launches. Hey, thank you so much for
