- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Welcome in everybody to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by the Nation, part of the Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: Tristan, what's up, my man?
- 0:49SPEAKER_05: Hey, Steven.
- 0:50SPEAKER_05: I'm just over here trying to nurse this uh disappointment of the past weekend.
- 0:56SPEAKER_05: You know, just one step at a time, one pant leg at a time, one sip of this mezcal and tequila old-fashioned.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: Mezcal and tequila?
- 1:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, dude.
- 1:08SPEAKER_05: It's it's a beautiful mix.
- 1:10SPEAKER_05: It's delicious.
- 1:11SPEAKER_05: Highly recommend.
- 1:11SPEAKER_05: One shot of mezcal, one shot of tequila, half a shot of simple syrup.
- 1:16SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
- 1:17SPEAKER_05: It works, dog.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: Okay, a little lime juice.
- 1:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, if you want to if you want to sex it up a little bit, absolutely.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: Uh, I feel like lime juice is an essential here for a margarita.
- 1:26SPEAKER_05: It's not a margarita, it's a mezcal old-fashioned.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: Oh, I'm very sorry.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: I mistook that.
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: I was first introduced to mezcal on my honeymoon.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: It was fantastic.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: I enjoy the smokiness.
- 1:36SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's not for everybody, but it is delicious if you do like that smoky flavor.
- 1:40SPEAKER_05: Indeed.
- 1:41SPEAKER_05: What about you, sir?
- 1:42SPEAKER_05: What's going on?
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: Uh, I'm drinking me a shiner prickly pear, one of my favorite beers.
- 1:47SPEAKER_02: It's a classic.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: I I enjoy a prickly pear anything, really.
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: I mean, we even bought these new seltzers from HEB that are prickly pear flavored, and they're great.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: Hey, uh you're still on the seltzer grind?
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: I wouldn't say no, I mean like like seltzer, you know, like uh like a fizzy water, you know.
- 2:07SPEAKER_02: I'm not drinking like a I'm not drinking like a hard seltzer over here.
- 2:12SPEAKER_05: Oh, I see what you're saying now.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay, just a little seltzer, just a little sparkling water action, you know, to kind of stay away.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: I'm trying to stay away from the sodas.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: We're doing a little sparkling water.
- 2:21SPEAKER_02: This is helping a little bit, but it's not the same.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna pretend it's the same.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: People that pretend that sparkling water is j is a good replacement for soda is wrong.
- 2:31SPEAKER_02: And I may just be, it's it's not, it's soda's dude, it's it's a delicious crispy, fizzy replacement.
- 2:37SPEAKER_05: I'm tired of your mouth's looking for anyway.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: Soda's delicious.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: Okay, uh, Dr.
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: Pepper is delicious, and I don't, I don't, I'm not gonna pretend like something is better than a bunch of sugar put together with a with vanilla flavoring.
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm not gonna pretend.
- 2:52SPEAKER_05: I I guess we could have saved this for the debate corner, but I I think your problem is you haven't made the shift over to diet soda whatsoever.
- 2:59SPEAKER_02: Diet soda is not good.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: That's why I haven't done that.
- 3:02SPEAKER_05: I think that's I think that's why I've had an easier time replacing diet soda with sparkling water because I've I've abandoned regular soda, so to speak.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: No, that's good.
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: It's a good thing to not drink soda.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: I'm not trying to like say if you don't drink soda, you're wrong.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: Like, that's clearly a good, it's a good lifestyle choice, but I'm tired of pretending that people don't like soda.
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: I'm stop, I'm tired of pretending.
- 3:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, uh, it's it's it's kind of like uh you don't like McDonald's statement.
- 3:29SPEAKER_05: Like, shut up.
- 3:29SPEAKER_05: Come on, like you do like McDonald's.
- 3:31SPEAKER_05: You like McDonald's, like stop it.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: Stop it.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: Everybody will eat a big bag and be like, that was fine, you know.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: Like you're not gonna say, oh gross, McDonald's.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: Like, stop it.
- 3:41SPEAKER_05: You're lying to yourself.
- 3:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, everyone likes soda, Texas Tech.
- 3:46SPEAKER_05: And occasionally Texas Tech podcast.
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: I at this point, it's very occasional, uh, with the introduction or the introduction of debate corner.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: Um, let's talk some basketball.
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: Hasn't been great.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: No, no two straight losses.
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: Uh, we went to Fort Worth, lost to a ranked TCU team, then went back home to Lubbock and lost to a uh uh subpar Cincinnati team who I shouldn't say subpar.
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: Cincinnati's a good team.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: They're not a great team, but they're a good team, and that needs to be said here.
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: But yeah, Texas Tech basketball kind of hitting a bump, man.
- 4:23SPEAKER_05: Well, I mean, they're a good team.
- 4:25SPEAKER_05: Every team in the Big 12 is good, unless you're Oklahoma State.
- 4:28SPEAKER_05: Um, but West Virginia.
- 4:31SPEAKER_05: You I know we were having this conversation a few days ago.
- 4:34SPEAKER_05: They're a good team, but they're not good enough to beat ranked Texas Tech at home, who's been undefeated like 15 games straight at home.
- 4:40SPEAKER_05: Like, that should not have happened.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that shouldn't have happened.
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: And I, you know, you can make excuses.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: There's apparently this pretty, you know, big stomach bug going around with the team.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: A lot of players were feeling under the weather.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: It's hitting the coaching staff as well.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: You kind of tell uh the way Warren Washington's played the last couple of games, the way that Pop was playing, uh Joe Tucson.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: I mean, those guys just didn't look like themselves, really.
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: They look slower, they look like something was really bothering them.
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: And you know, if you've ever tried to run or do any physical activity when you're feeling under the weather, it's not great.
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: So uh, especially you could see it, especially in Warren.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: I mean, that guy was struggling against Cincinnati, and I feel like he was kind of affected the most.
- 5:23SPEAKER_05: Do hangovers count in that category?
- 5:26SPEAKER_05: Uh yeah, I would probably put it in the same category.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Imagine going and pounding 15 lone stars, and then the next day you're just like, I I hate everything too soon, too soon.
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: Despite all of this, Texas Tech is still ranked number 23 in the latest AP poll that came out today.
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: Hang it on, baby.
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: You know, it's a little bit of respect for what we've done so far.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: Um TCU and Cincinnati, I think people are more upset because they're looking at the overall schedule, and you're seeing three of the next four games are Baylor, Kansas, and then uh who's the third one?
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: I don't know, somebody else that's pretty difficult.
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: Well, you got UT again, Iowa State.
- 6:07SPEAKER_02: Iowa State, yeah, yeah.
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: Uh, and you're seeing that on the schedule, and you're like, damn, I really wish we would have got the TCU in the Cincinnati games so we could, you know, force, you know, we could actually lose these next couple.
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: Um, but I think the Big 12's a grind.
- 6:23SPEAKER_02: I think that you're allowed to have these spurts during Big 12 play.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: It's happened to really great teams in the past.
- 6:31SPEAKER_02: The 2019 Texas Tech team lost three in a row during Big 12 play.
- 6:36SPEAKER_02: So, you know, you're allowed to have these spurts.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: It's about how you respond and getting the team healthy again.
- 6:41SPEAKER_05: Well, I mean, you exactly good teams do this.
- 6:44SPEAKER_05: I mean, we're we we were just talking about how the Kansas Jayhawks, you know, are dropping games to UCF.
- 6:49SPEAKER_05: So it's this crap happens.
- 6:51SPEAKER_05: Let's just hope that these games are our crappy drops, you know.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, no, absolutely.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: I mean, you're gonna have to bring it your next four.
- 6:58SPEAKER_02: If you you got three really, really tough challenges, uh, one of them in Waco tomorrow, and then Iowa State in Ames a little later, Kansas in Lubbock, and then UCF is kind of the barrier there.
- 7:12SPEAKER_02: But um, you know, you're really hoping, I think two and two, and you're pretty happy if you're a Texas Tech fan coming out of that gauntlet.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: So it just it's just another another stretch of games in the Big 12, man.
- 7:23SPEAKER_02: It's not fun.
- 7:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I feel like we were we were a little high on our sauce there uh for a couple weeks there, and we're we're just getting to drag that back down to reality, I think.
- 7:33SPEAKER_05: Uh, like you said, dude, I think these are good for our team as well.
- 7:35SPEAKER_05: You know, get to see face some adversity, see how we respond to it, see what this team is made of, to uh finish out the rest of the schedule here.
- 7:42SPEAKER_05: So um I I think I think that's that's a good way to put it if you're gonna look at it optimistically.
- 7:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, you were in that TCU game.
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: There's not much you can do when you get a Micah PV four for four from three performance uh in Fort Worth.
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: The one of the worst shooters uh I think I've seen put on a Texas Tech uniform goes four for four from three in that game and clearly used uh you know the revenge, I guess, factor and uh had himself a knight.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: So it's not often where uh he's gonna hit four for four from downtown, but it is what it is.
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: You deal with it, you move on.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: It was a tight game in a raucous environment.
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: Fort Worth was rocking.
- 8:25SPEAKER_02: Uh, a lot of tech fans showed up.
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: You could hear good raider power over there, but um, the Cincy one is probably more concerning just because it was at home.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: Uh, but again, you're dealing with a not so healthy Texas Tech team dealing with a flu or a stomach bug or something of that nature.
- 8:42SPEAKER_05: Funs.
- 8:43SPEAKER_05: Man, I I I guess all we can do now is just look forward to uh to Baylor here um tomorrow.
- 8:49SPEAKER_05: Oh man, what a freaking uh battle that's going to be in the in the new foster pavilion there on the on the Brazos.
- 8:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they go from the feral to the foster.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: Uh Baylor did just squeeze out a win against Iowa State, but that was after the winning basket was waved off in the final second.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: So this Baylor team is like half a second away from dropping four of their last five games.
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: I like to hear that.
- 9:15SPEAKER_02: We need to consider this.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: Iowa State is a good team.
- 9:18SPEAKER_02: Um, they did beat them, but you know, yeah, they had half a second more.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: It it would have been looking pretty rough for the Baylor Bears.
- 9:27SPEAKER_02: Uh dropped uh several in a row.
- 9:29SPEAKER_02: I think they dropped three in a row before they beat either, I think West Virginia, and then um ended up beating Iowa State at the last minute.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: But uh this you know, this Baylor team's pretty good.
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: They got a lot of young guys, five-star products.
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: They have a good big guy, um, Eves Messi, I believe is how you say his name.
- 9:48SPEAKER_02: He's a uh rim protector, he's a good rebounder, especially for a freshman.
- 9:53SPEAKER_02: Um, and they just have uh one of the best coaches in the country in Scott Drew.
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: So you always got to be afraid of that.
- 9:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, this is also the perfect opportunity to get your position back at the front of the Big 12.
- 10:03SPEAKER_05: Unfortunately, we're half a game behind at this point, tied with Baylor in Iowa State.
- 10:09SPEAKER_05: So you have the chance to kick Baylor down the stairs a bit and make your way back up with K, U, and U of H.
- 10:15SPEAKER_05: So uh I I I I couldn't open the podcast like I could last week with nothing but jubilation of being this the single greatest team in America.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: You're still technically in first place if you look at the loss column.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: I mean, tech has already had their bye week per se, Houston and Kansas have not.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: And so they're yeah, they have one more win on the column, but we're all looking at three losses in the Big 12 between Houston, Kansas, Baylor, Tech, and Iowa State.
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: So, you know, these it's just gonna be a wild year in the Big 12 where people are beating down on others, and um, you know, we're just it's just a grind, man.
- 10:50SPEAKER_02: Every single year, it's it's nuts.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: This conference is so good.
- 10:54SPEAKER_05: Anything else to say, man?
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: Well, after Baylor, you play UCF at home, so that's but that that's like a UCF game, it's kind of trappy.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: I know it's it's a little like Cincinnati.
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: It was a little trappy.
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: It was your first home game, and you're coming back, and you just uh you can't take any team lightly, even if it's Oklahoma State, even if it's West Virginia or UCF, you have to play to you know with the most energy and the most hustle that you possibly can and go beat this team by freaking 20.
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: Like you can, you know you can.
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: You just need to do it and put it all together at home.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: So um, I'm more I'm more curious to see how we respond to this two-game losing streak uh against a really good Baylor team, despite you know their three-game losing streak earlier in the year and everything of that nature.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: But um, no, I still have a lot of faith in this team.
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: I don't I don't have uh a lot of qualms.
- 11:46SPEAKER_02: I think there was a lot of overreaction after the loss to Cincinnati.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: Um, and you know, this is just such a long season, it's not like football, you know.
- 11:56SPEAKER_02: Football, you drop a game, you shouldn't, and you're like, uh oh, we need to start talking about things.
- 12:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, but basketball, there's just so many games in the year.
- 12:04SPEAKER_02: I mean, you're playing 35, 40 games a year, and uh you just can't take one loss as you know, this is going to be the team from now on, you know.
- 12:15SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and I don't want this to sound like some sort of reservationist defeatist attitude when I say this, but this basketball team has already overachieved the season.
- 12:23SPEAKER_05: Oh, absolutely.
- 12:24SPEAKER_05: So I I don't want this disappointing stretch here to reflect you know the overall feeling of the season because it's really been a spectacular road so far, and I couldn't be happier with the way things are going.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: 16 and five so far.
- 12:38SPEAKER_02: You know what we finished last year?
- 12:41SPEAKER_05: 16 and five?
- 12:43SPEAKER_02: No, do you know what we finished total last year?
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: Oh no, 16 and 16 is what we finished last year.
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: So we've already met we've already met the win total from last year.
- 12:54SPEAKER_02: We're already at the conference win total from last year.
- 12:57SPEAKER_02: This is absolutely an improvement from what we saw on the court last year.
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: Uh again, this team I think can do so much more than just improve from last year's team, and they have a chance to do that.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: So long season ahead of us, it'll be good.
- 13:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that that the last year, I guess, is just blotted out of my mind at this point where I can even put those pieces together.
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: We like to forget year two of Mark Adams.
- 13:18unknown: Didn't happen.
- 13:19SPEAKER_05: No, sir.
- 13:20SPEAKER_05: I don't remember it.
- 13:21SPEAKER_05: Didn't happen.
- 13:22SPEAKER_02: You only had that one cool year, only the one sweet 16 year with all those good players.
- 13:28SPEAKER_02: Um let's move on from basketball because it's been depressing.
- 13:33SPEAKER_02: And uh we're looking, yeah, shooty hoots.
- 13:36SPEAKER_02: What it is what it is.
- 13:37SPEAKER_02: We got news today dropped from Don Williams of the Lubbock Avalanche Journal.
- 13:41SPEAKER_02: Coach Stephen Hamby, let go as the Texas Tech offensive line coach.
- 13:47SPEAKER_02: Joey McGuire is in the process of looking for a replacement.
- 13:51SPEAKER_02: How unexpected was this?
- 13:53SPEAKER_05: This is really unexpected because I feel like if this was gonna happen, it would have happened weeks ago.
- 13:58SPEAKER_05: Like, why is this happening right now?
- 13:59SPEAKER_05: Like, usually with the coaching turnover, I feel like those usually happen pretty quickly after the season because I'm I'm assuming all the coaching review happens pretty instantly after the season is over before everyone kind of goes on a little vacation.
- 14:12SPEAKER_05: So um, this is really surprising to me, dude.
- 14:15SPEAKER_05: Um, because he's you know, he's Kitley's guy, you know, and Kitley's uh uh kind of like a McGuire guy in quotation marks at this point.
- 14:22SPEAKER_05: You know, they're kind of attached to each other a little bit.
- 14:24SPEAKER_05: Um, so I I was really shocked about it.
- 14:27SPEAKER_05: What do you what were your third first thoughts?
- 14:29SPEAKER_05: Were you shocked or you're like, yeah, I could see it?
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: No, I mean, now that I'm looking back at it, I think I can definitely see it.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: This offensive line has vastly underperformed the last two years um at Texas Tech.
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: When you've I I think we've had a little bit of talent, maybe not the most talent ever.
- 14:45SPEAKER_02: So I can I can see it, but I was definitely shocked by it.
- 14:49SPEAKER_02: More more so the timing than anything, like you mentioned, because I I mean, this is just a weird time to fire a coach.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: This is kind of when you want all your staff to come together and not let parts of your staff go.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: We we understand coaching changes happen and guys lead for other jobs, but like to actually let a guy go at this point in the year is a little weird.
- 15:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I wonder if there's just like a lot of feet dragging because you know this sucks.
- 15:13SPEAKER_05: Uh, we're we're we're much more beat up about it because of who Hambi is.
- 15:17SPEAKER_05: Anytime it's an alum and you just kind of really start liking and having that kind of guy on the staff, it's really tough to see them go.
- 15:25SPEAKER_05: So you look through these super biased and rosy tinted glasses about letting a guy like that go when in reality it feels like anybody else.
- 15:32SPEAKER_05: Be like, okay, yeah, it's a position coach.
- 15:34SPEAKER_05: Let's try something else at this point.
- 15:36SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, I I'm sure the coaching staff had a hard time doing it as well.
- 15:40SPEAKER_05: Um, I'm sure Joey McGuire is very much a relationships guy, especially even with his staff.
- 15:46SPEAKER_05: It's probably not as much of a professional atmosphere as you would think at say maybe a Saban run program.
- 15:53SPEAKER_05: So I just see I bet it's a bet it was just a really tough decision.
- 15:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think uh a few things could happen, and this is all just speculation, but um just for the timing purposes, I mean, you could think one, something went on with Stephen Hamby that forced you know Joey Maguire to get him away from the program.
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: Not saying that happened, I'm just saying that could be a reason.
- 16:17SPEAKER_02: There's also another part of this where Joey Maguire could have had another guy in mind and is just waiting on the announcement there and thought this would be an upgrade at the offensive line coaching position, which you know, if you're a good head coach, you have to make those tough decisions sometimes, um, despite how tight you are with your people and how loyal you are with your coaches and your staff.
- 16:39SPEAKER_02: But um, you know, I just don't we don't know until we see the net who the next guy is gonna be.
- 16:45SPEAKER_02: Um, there's also a part of this where tech has a really exciting group of young offensive linemen.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: This is two back-to-back top 25 recruiting classes with a lot of good pieces at that offensive line that could develop into real players here in the Big 12.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: You got a couple really solid transfers in the transfer portal um at that offensive line position.
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: So maybe you just did not see an outcome or had confidence in how Coach Hambi was going to lead those guys or develop that, you know, those players.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: So that could be another part of this.
- 17:18SPEAKER_02: But um, until we see, I think, who Texas Tech replaces Coach Hambi with, we can't really uh we can't really make a determination, you know.
- 17:27SPEAKER_05: I I think that's a pretty sober way to look at the situation.
- 17:32SPEAKER_05: Um, do you think this also places additional pressure on Kitley to perform this season?
- 17:38SPEAKER_05: Because you know, your your canning is one of his right-hand dudes who he brought along with him, and he would probably vouch for as in like I want him in my system.
- 17:48SPEAKER_05: So I I wonder if this is kind of like a smoke before the fire situation regarding Kitley's status at tech as well.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: Well, it's also a little weird that the Texas Tech staff did change after a pretty disappointing year.
- 18:02SPEAKER_02: I mean, all things considered, Texas Tech was supposed to do more than what they did last year, and you had no changes on the staff, which a little weird, but we were gonna let it slide because it's only the second year of the coach, and you know, you want to trust in Joey and doing because you know he's a good guy, and we can see uh, you know, the light of this Texas Tech program.
- 18:24SPEAKER_02: So yeah, uh at least for me, I was just hoping, you know, I'm gonna let I'm gonna let Joey be.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna let him do.
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna, you know, make any say that he should make any huge changes to this staff despite the underperformance from last year.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: But you know, if you you gotta make hard decisions as a head coach in college football, you really do.
- 18:46SPEAKER_02: And you can't just stand by your guy uh if your entire position group is underperforming.
- 18:52SPEAKER_02: He brought in two former Western Kentucky guys that were supposed to be really huge pieces and senior leaders on this team, one being Rusty Stotz, one the other being Cole Spencer, and both of them ended up not being great in Texas Tech uniforms.
- 19:09SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, Cole Spencer obviously dealt with injuries, uh, but you know, it was it it was underperforming, and I think you had a few guys that you should have been better.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: You have a star running back coming back uh to lead your team next year in Taj Brooks, and you really need a strong offensive line to help him out a little bit, uh, you know, instead of instead of what we saw last year.
- 19:36SPEAKER_02: So I I'm not sad about it, I will say.
- 19:39SPEAKER_05: It's it's a also interesting way to look at it, how no big changes happened on the staff.
- 19:46SPEAKER_05: And so far, this is the biggest shift.
- 19:48SPEAKER_05: I wonder if the staff is doing a bit of a review right now.
- 19:52SPEAKER_05: Now that's national signing day and all that is wrapped up.
- 19:55SPEAKER_05: Um, now they're actually starting to look at look at and review the coaches and see if changes need to be made.
- 20:02SPEAKER_05: So I wonder if he's not gonna be the only position coach that's let go at this point.
- 20:09SPEAKER_05: I wonder if they're kind of going down the list here.
- 20:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, definitely keep an eye out.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: I don't I don't foresee anybody else getting let go.
- 20:17SPEAKER_02: I could be wrong, but um, I really don't I really but I didn't see Hamby being let go, so I don't know.
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: You know, uh yeah, I guess that's something to keep an eye out for.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: But I I they have those reviews almost right after the season.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: That's that's what I'm thinking.
- 20:32SPEAKER_05: So that's but that makes it weird that Hambi was let go now.
- 20:35SPEAKER_02: It's a confusing time that that's what leads me to believe that Joey has a guy in mind and he saw or maybe had initial talks with him to potentially join the staff, and this was kind of the last domino to fall before that happened.
- 20:48SPEAKER_02: So um this is all speculation.
- 20:51SPEAKER_02: Uh we don't know at this point, so I guess we'll just see.
- 20:55SPEAKER_05: But hey man, all all the all the best to Hambi.
- 20:57SPEAKER_05: I hope he goes on and has a successful successful career wherever he lands on his two feet.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 21:03SPEAKER_02: 100%.
- 21:04SPEAKER_05: But I'm sure it's I'm sure it's pretty heartbreaking to be uh fired from your alma mater like that.
- 21:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it sucks.
- 21:09SPEAKER_02: It's gotta suck.
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: I mean, it sucked for Cliff.
- 21:11SPEAKER_02: It's yeah, exactly.
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: It's gotta suck.
- 21:14SPEAKER_05: We're still not over the Cliff thing, really.
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: No, it's just it puts a bad taste in your mouth when the guys come back and they just don't perform up to standards and you just have to make a change.
- 21:23SPEAKER_05: But we get all misty-eyed anytime Cliff comes up in anything.
- 21:26SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 21:26SPEAKER_02: It's like also new Washington Commanders offensive coordinator, Cliff Kingsbury.
- 21:32SPEAKER_05: Oh, that's final, the Raiders thing is final.
- 21:34SPEAKER_05: Bye bye.
- 21:35SPEAKER_02: Raiders, Raiders thing went south and he decided to join the Washington Commanders uh as the offensive coordinator.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: Listen, Cliff, offensive coordinator is your position.
- 21:46SPEAKER_02: It is that's what you that's where you need to be, man.
- 21:48SPEAKER_05: That's where he needs to be.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: It's where you need to be.
- 21:50SPEAKER_05: I think in the NFL as well.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so it's curious though, because Washington has the number two pick.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: He just worked with Caleb Williams over there at U At USC, who is the projected number one pick?
- 22:03SPEAKER_02: Is Washington potentially gonna trade up to get Caleb Williams and have you know that familiarity with Cliff Kingsbury?
- 22:12SPEAKER_02: Who knows?
- 22:13SPEAKER_02: But it's uh it's good that Cliff's back in the league.
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: I'm happy for him.
- 22:16SPEAKER_02: Glad he's not back in college.
- 22:17SPEAKER_02: That was the last thing I wanted.
- 22:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, was Cliff to take a head coaching spot at another Big 12 school or yeah, whatever, uh, to go against tech.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: So glad he's he's going right back to the NFL.
- 22:29SPEAKER_05: I doubt Cliff even wants that anymore.
- 22:31SPEAKER_05: So I I I really I really don't think he wants college.
- 22:34SPEAKER_02: So you didn't want to recruit a huge part, man.
- 22:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean it's you think about NFL and college football, college football being a head coach or being any coach is a full-time job.
- 22:45SPEAKER_02: I mean 365, you're recruiting, man.
- 22:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, off season, you're still recruiting, you're training off season NFL.
- 22:53SPEAKER_02: You got a GM for all that, buddy.
- 22:55SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 22:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you're you're going on vacation in the NFL.
- 22:58SPEAKER_02: So and Cliff likes his vacations.
- 23:00SPEAKER_02: We all know that.
- 23:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:01SPEAKER_05: So in Thailand.
- 23:04SPEAKER_02: In Thailand.
- 23:05SPEAKER_02: I thought he was legit.
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: When Cliff got fired from Arizona, they were just like, he's just gonna move to Thailand for like three years.
- 23:12SPEAKER_05: That would have been so awesome, though.
- 23:14SPEAKER_05: Fine of itself.
- 23:15SPEAKER_05: That's so Cliff.
- 23:16SPEAKER_02: It is, it's very Cliff.
- 23:18SPEAKER_02: Glad to see him.
- 23:19SPEAKER_02: I'll be I'll be keeping an eye out for the commanders.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: Oh, for sure, man.
- 23:24SPEAKER_02: Um, last thing before debate corner, we should mention Patrick Moes is in another Super Bowl.
- 23:31SPEAKER_02: Oh, I how can we forget another Super Bowl for Patrick Mahomes facing off against uh Cyclone Larry's Brock Purdy and the Iowa and the uh I almost said Iowa State Cyclones?
- 23:44SPEAKER_05: The uh very impressive season for the Iowa State Cyclones made it to the Super Bowl, Iowa State to the Super Bowl.
- 23:51SPEAKER_02: Iowa State is dead.
- 23:53SPEAKER_02: Who who would have thought we'd have a Texas Tech Iowa State Super Bowl?
- 23:57SPEAKER_02: I sure didn't.
- 23:58SPEAKER_05: This is I mean, this is this is sick.
- 24:00SPEAKER_05: I mean, uh all these Big 12 quarterbacks, especially no disrespect whatsoever to Brock Purdy or the Cyclones.
- 24:08SPEAKER_05: But bro, it's it to see a guy like Brock Purdy go into the NFL and actually kind of tear it up, it's pretty cool to see.
- 24:14SPEAKER_05: Like, because you you usually expect you know the Heisman runner-up, because even Mahomes was the same way, like no one expected this.
- 24:21SPEAKER_05: Obviously, we did, but anytime we talk to anybody about Mahomes outside the tech circles, they're like, Why would they why are they going so hard on this guy?
- 24:27SPEAKER_02: You know, and then it's still he was still a top 10 pick in the NFL draft.
- 24:32SPEAKER_05: I know, but you know, a lot of people were scratching their heads because people dude, anytime Pat's time at TechSTech comes up, it is always, always, always followed up with he was dog poo-poo water in in college.
- 24:46SPEAKER_05: When obviously he wasn't, it's just his team was.
- 24:49SPEAKER_05: So it's it no one believed in Mahomes, like the casual pan, I should say.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: Umy reed did, and he read, and obviously we did, so yeah, we we knew that was gonna happen, but no, I mean, Brock Purdy, Mr.
- 25:02SPEAKER_02: Irrelevant, the literal last pick in the NFL draft going and starting in what year two, I guess, for him, because he was a rookie last year, his second year in the league, and San Francisco, they just have everything around him.
- 25:16SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna like pretend like having Christian McCaffrey and Debo Samuel and Brandon Ayuk and that great defense does not help you succeed as a quarterback, but still to take Mr.
- 25:30SPEAKER_02: Irrelevant and go all the way to the freaking Super Bowl, have the second half against the Lions like he did.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: That's it's impressive, and it's gonna be fun.
- 25:36SPEAKER_02: I'm uh I'm tuned in, man.
- 25:38SPEAKER_02: This is gonna be a good Super Bowl.
- 25:39SPEAKER_05: Of course, Steven, can I say it's kind of funny that the Lions blew their best shot at the Super Bowl ever?
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: It's kind of everybody was rooting for him, everybody was rooting for him, and it was like, just no, you're the Lions.
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: It's kind of funny at the end of the day.
- 25:54SPEAKER_05: It's like the Browns when the Browns like blow it.
- 25:56SPEAKER_05: It's like it's kind of funny.
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: Is Dan Campbell the best Aggie?
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes, he's the best Aggie.
- 26:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's the best Aggie.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: He's he's awesome, like he's great.
- 26:07SPEAKER_02: He's just gonna say some quote about breaking legs and shit in the press conference.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be great.
- 26:13SPEAKER_02: He's the best Aggie.
- 26:15SPEAKER_05: You're allowed to like the Ags when they're doing stuff that's not associated with AM.
- 26:19SPEAKER_05: Like, it's that's fine, you know.
- 26:20SPEAKER_05: Like, it's okay at that point.
- 26:22SPEAKER_02: You gotta suck it up every once in a while on the pros when it comes to a long horn or an Aggie.
- 26:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 26:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I supported Lamarcus Aldridge.
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: I can do that as a San Antonio Spurs fan.
- 26:32SPEAKER_02: You know, that was his past.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna forget his gross past.
- 26:36SPEAKER_05: I like how it's convenient how we can forget when it's a team we don't like, but if it's a it's if it's a red raider, like it's their whole identity, you know, like it's they wake up, breathe Texas Tech, take off their Texas Tech PJs.
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: Exactly, exactly.
- 26:52SPEAKER_02: We root for all Red Raiders, no matter even if they play for a rival team in the pros.
- 26:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'll root for a red raider if they're a Houston Rocket.
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: I'm just gonna do it, you know.
- 27:02SPEAKER_02: I hate the Houston Rockets, but I'm gonna root for them.
- 27:05SPEAKER_05: I just don't have that level of passion for a pro team like I do for tech.
- 27:09SPEAKER_05: So, but um, dude, did you see the Las Vegas sphere of Patrick Mahomes and Adidas mad?
- 27:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it really looks like Adidas is starting to really prop this guy up.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: They should.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: He's the best quarterback in the league, yeah.
- 27:27SPEAKER_05: As like, you know, kind of uh an MJ-esque figure within their brand, you know, and it seems like a very nice timing to be switching over to Adidas.
- 27:39SPEAKER_05: That it is I I I don't know if we're making too much of a deal of too much big of a deal or not enough big enough deal about this, but it really seems like this was a tactical maneuver, and it's it really seems like this is lining up very nicely for Pat and in tech.
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: I mean, yeah, I mean it no, it's a good move.
- 28:00SPEAKER_02: Uh, we said this when it was first announced it's a good move to get away from Under Armour and to go to Adidas and align with Patrick Mahomes.
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: Just don't put his logo on the freaking jersey.
- 28:08SPEAKER_02: That's all I want.
- 28:09SPEAKER_02: Just don't uh align with Patrick Mahomes, make your Patrick Mahomes times Adidas times Texas Tech stuff.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: Please do all that.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: Don't put his logo on the jersey.
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: That's my only beef with this.
- 28:20SPEAKER_05: Just one game already decide on this.
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: We already decided.
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: One home game.
- 28:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:24SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 28:27SPEAKER_02: We did decide one home game uh where the jersey contains Patrick Mahomes' logo.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: I forget.
- 28:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you remember those?
- 28:44SPEAKER_05: Or the uh or the the Texas Pride uniform that everybody loves.
- 28:48SPEAKER_05: So everybody loved the Texas the Texas Pride unis.
- 28:53SPEAKER_05: Just I thought they were dope.
- 28:55SPEAKER_02: I know you did.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: Uh we could make this a debate quarter topic, I guess, if we wanted to.
- 28:59SPEAKER_02: But you you might be one of the five people that like those uniforms.
- 29:03SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 29:04SPEAKER_05: I the helmet might have been a little overboard, but I thought like the sleeves and stuff that the players wore were dope.
- 29:09SPEAKER_02: There was one Texas Pride uniform that wasn't as bad as the other.
- 29:12SPEAKER_02: One of them was egregious.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: One of them was like, dude, this this was a poor choice all around.
- 29:19SPEAKER_05: So yeah, let's let's do uh let's do that Patrick Mahomes jersey.
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: So Patrick Mahomes jersey.
- 29:24SPEAKER_02: You know who's not great?
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: And how how did Patrick Mahomes end up so good and so humble when he's got this family around him?
- 29:35SPEAKER_02: One brother who gets uh uh accused of groping.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: Uh he's got a dad who just got his third DWI.
- 29:44SPEAKER_02: What's going on?
- 29:45SPEAKER_02: Why, why, why?
- 29:48SPEAKER_05: I I guess he is the only one that had his head on straight.
- 29:51SPEAKER_05: I mean, he was the one that got out, so to speak.
- 29:53SPEAKER_05: I'm not that he was like in a bad situation, but I mean he's from the small Texas town, you know.
- 29:57SPEAKER_05: Every kid dreams of playing in the NFL or they're strapping it on for Friday night, but he was the one that actually went out and did it.
- 30:02SPEAKER_05: And I think he just kind of remembers that, and you know, that every day is uh a gift for it.
- 30:06SPEAKER_05: And but whatever the heck is going on with his family, it's just weird.
- 30:10SPEAKER_05: I think the problem, I mean, this this is a sports podcast, and I'm not gonna sit here and like critique people's lives, but I think with the problem with the brother is the brother's just kind of riding Patrick is Patrick's screen more than anything, rather than getting his own life, and I just think that's the real problem.
- 30:24SPEAKER_05: While um and his dad, I don't know, I'm sure he's a grown man, so all the problems are already kind of baked in.
- 30:30SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I mean he's he's it's not like this is his first occurrence, this is his third TWI, it's unfortunate.
- 30:36SPEAKER_05: Get an Uber, brother.
- 30:38SPEAKER_05: All a taxi dude, you can afford it.
- 30:42SPEAKER_02: I bet you can afford it.
- 30:43SPEAKER_02: Your son just got a 500 million dollar NFL deal plus all of his partnerships.
- 30:48SPEAKER_02: It's it's ridiculous when uh people like that do that, and it's just it's disheartening, it sucks.
- 30:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, you know, because you're putting people in bad positions and you're you're not putting yours just putting yourself at risk, but you're putting others at risk.
- 31:01SPEAKER_05: So Demon, are you saying drunk driving's bad?
- 31:04SPEAKER_02: Drunk driving, not not good.
- 31:06SPEAKER_05: Let's not get too hot takey off.
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: My hot take is that drunk driving is not okay.
- 31:11SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 31:12SPEAKER_02: Uh no, Patrick Mahomes Sr.
- 31:14SPEAKER_02: Be better.
- 31:15SPEAKER_02: Um, Patrick Mahomes, you're gonna you're killing it.
- 31:19SPEAKER_02: Keep doing you, buddy.
- 31:20SPEAKER_05: Dude, we we we love you, we we appreciate everything you do.
- 31:24SPEAKER_05: The every day you wake up is a gift to all of us, Patrick Mahomes.
- 31:28SPEAKER_05: To all of us in the red and black.
- 31:31SPEAKER_05: We and you know, I saw I kind of kind of let's go ahead and talk about Patrick Mahomes real quick.
- 31:35SPEAKER_05: I mean, since we're kind of at the end of the content here.
- 31:38SPEAKER_05: I kind of saw this debate going on online where obviously our rivals were giving us a hard time, particularly you two fan UT fans, about Tech's obsession with Patrick Mahomes and how it's kind of ill-founded.
- 31:49SPEAKER_05: Like it's like, okay, yeah, he went to the school, but we kind of take it too far.
- 31:54SPEAKER_05: Do you think we take it too far?
- 31:56SPEAKER_01: No, I don't think so either.
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: He's the best football player in the country right now.
- 32:01SPEAKER_01: Like, we're yes, we're gonna ride that coattail.
- 32:03SPEAKER_01: So I know that's sorry, not sorry.
- 32:05SPEAKER_05: Like, I I I completely agree.
- 32:07SPEAKER_05: I I guess I mean I remember this, I I forget what the thread was, but like I remember one of them was saying, like, how UT doesn't go that hard into KD and stuff, and then and then somebody responded to that tweet with like they all the KD tweets, all the KD tweets from the Texas basketball official account.
- 32:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like it's like sorry, we support alumni that are doing awesome.
- 32:28SPEAKER_02: Like, I know you you can't like there's nothing bad about doing that, and you're literally if you had Patrick Mahomes that went to your school, you'd be doing the same thing, yeah.
- 32:39SPEAKER_05: Literally, literally everybody would be going crazy.
- 32:41SPEAKER_05: And again, granted, this is coming from the same fan base where anytime UT is doing anything, Matthew McConaughey is going to be brought up or involved in some way, shape, or form.
- 32:53SPEAKER_05: And I mean, I get it, he's he's magnetic, and I the it's hard to dislike Matthew McConaughey, but like it's he can't rag on us and then do that with an actor.
- 33:03SPEAKER_02: LSU literally does a pregame video where they show all of the current NFL players that went to LSU.
- 33:09SPEAKER_02: Like, it's yes, it's what happens.
- 33:11SPEAKER_02: It's and that's LSU, who probably has way more NFL players than UT does.
- 33:16SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's just like you hype up guy alumni that are doing great things, you do it in research, you do it in sports, you do it wherever you possibly can because it's a recruiting tool and it brings in money to your university.
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: We're not gonna apologize for writing Patrick Mahan, Patrick Mahones' coattails, you know.
- 33:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, hey, that's that's a great way to put it, and and it it attracts more play, like you said, it kind of helps with recruiting and um it kind of it gets people excited about being Red Raiders, it gets people excited about being that's how you build an alumni base.
- 33:53SPEAKER_05: Whenever you talk to people that go to universities that don't have the same level as connection to their school, a lot of this is why because it's it's not played up of that, it becomes a part of your identity with the alumni base.
- 34:07SPEAKER_05: Schools like Texas Tech, we really play it up, you know, it really becomes a part of our identity, hopefully in a healthy way.
- 34:13SPEAKER_05: Whenever you graduate, and this is just an extension of that at the end of the day.
- 34:17SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, yeah.
- 34:19SPEAKER_02: No, that's just somebody, you know, bragging about salty.
- 34:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's just somebody being salty.
- 34:24SPEAKER_02: It's all good, it's all good.
- 34:25SPEAKER_02: It's it's fun Twitter jabber.
- 34:28SPEAKER_02: Um, all right, man.
- 34:29SPEAKER_02: Anything else before we get to debate corner?
- 34:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah, uh, I will say that it was pretty cool to see Grant Gilbert and Joey Maguire do that little fun Texas Tech hype up video.
- 34:41SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's it's always cool support uh supporting local artists that you know support tech.
- 34:45SPEAKER_05: So I thought that was a lot of fun to see.
- 34:47SPEAKER_02: Talking tech song of the week playlist participant, Grant Gilbert.
- 34:53SPEAKER_02: You were in on him way earlier.
- 34:55SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 34:55SPEAKER_02: Oh, I'll give you I'll give you credit.
- 34:57SPEAKER_02: You were in on Grant Gilbert before he started making stuff with Texas Tech.
- 35:01SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 35:02SPEAKER_05: Uh, because I I remember when I met him, like I served him a quesadilla on the border.
- 35:06SPEAKER_02: And oh, shouts out on the border.
- 35:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and uh, I remember like he obviously was nobody yet, and he was just like, Hey, are you going to like the concert tonight?
- 35:15SPEAKER_05: And I was like, or to this weekend, it was like one of the Lone Star Fests, like a jab fest or something.
- 35:19SPEAKER_05: And I told him yes, and he was like, Oh, sweet, man.
- 35:22SPEAKER_05: Hopefully, I'll see you there.
- 35:23SPEAKER_05: And I think he performed, so it's it's just kind of like a one of those funny stories about how that could just happen in the town like Lubbock, you know.
- 35:30SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 35:31SPEAKER_02: Shout out Grant Gilbert.
- 35:32SPEAKER_02: All right, man, debate corner.
- 35:35SPEAKER_02: We got two topics.
- 35:36SPEAKER_02: We're gonna keep this a little uh shorter than what we did last week because last week I think we went 35, 40 minutes.
- 35:43SPEAKER_05: Well, it was a it was a hot topic.
- 35:45SPEAKER_05: It was condiments are that's uh that's a big one.
- 35:49SPEAKER_02: It's big news.
- 35:50SPEAKER_02: It's big news.
- 35:50SPEAKER_05: Okay, they got some good engagements, hefty debate listeners, yeah.
- 35:54SPEAKER_02: Yes, for sure.
- 35:55SPEAKER_02: All right, first debate corner topic.
- 35:58SPEAKER_02: We're starting off a little easy today.
- 36:01SPEAKER_02: We got three restaurants, very well known, very you know, universally loved, I might say.
- 36:07SPEAKER_02: Uh we're gonna rank them in order from best to worst.
- 36:11SPEAKER_02: We have three Chili's, Olive Garden, and Red Lobster.
- 36:16SPEAKER_02: Three fine dining establishments.
- 36:19SPEAKER_02: I need you to order them from best to worst.
- 36:23SPEAKER_05: Are these all the same restaurant group?
- 36:25SPEAKER_05: I think they might actually be.
- 36:27SPEAKER_02: I think two of them are.
- 36:28SPEAKER_02: Definitely OG and Red Lobster.
- 36:30SPEAKER_02: 100% those are.
- 36:31SPEAKER_02: 100% those are the same.
- 36:33SPEAKER_02: I don't think Chile is part of that.
- 36:35SPEAKER_05: No, okay.
- 36:36SPEAKER_05: They're the same vein though.
- 36:38SPEAKER_05: So, but uh they're they're fast casual.
- 36:41SPEAKER_05: Yeah, fast casual, where it's like, how are these all still open after all these years?
- 36:46SPEAKER_05: But um let's let's talk about it then.
- 36:49SPEAKER_05: Do you want to go third to top or first to bottom?
- 36:52SPEAKER_02: First to bottom.
- 36:53SPEAKER_05: All right, first to bottom.
- 36:54SPEAKER_05: All right, with the first one, dude, I'm gonna stay loyal and true to chilies.
- 37:00SPEAKER_05: It's number one is chilies, dude.
- 37:03SPEAKER_05: It's it has to be.
- 37:04SPEAKER_05: I've eaten at Chili's way more than those other two, like exponentially more.
- 37:08SPEAKER_05: Some skillet queso up in here.
- 37:10SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, it's chilies, man.
- 37:13SPEAKER_05: It's mad the it's mad D's, you know.
- 37:19SPEAKER_02: You clearly you hate your wife.
- 37:21SPEAKER_02: You don't take her to anywhere nice.
- 37:23SPEAKER_02: I like Olive Garden.
- 37:24SPEAKER_02: Olive Garden's number one.
- 37:26SPEAKER_05: What?
- 37:27SPEAKER_02: Olive Garden is number one.
- 37:30SPEAKER_02: Olive Garden is number one.
- 37:31SPEAKER_05: Are you playing right now?
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: No, that's the best food.
- 37:34SPEAKER_05: Tell me why.
- 37:35SPEAKER_05: Tell me why.
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: Tell me why.
- 37:37SPEAKER_02: Um I'll tell you why.
- 37:39SPEAKER_02: Because they have a great thing.
- 37:41SPEAKER_02: It's called soup and salad.
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: It is probably the cheapest option um that you can get at one of these restaurants, and it is absolutely fantastic.
- 37:51SPEAKER_02: Introduced me to the zupa toscana, it introduced me to the chicken and gi soup as a child growing up, and it's just it's comfort.
- 38:01SPEAKER_02: It's soup like soup is why all garden.
- 38:04SPEAKER_02: I am a massive soup guy, okay?
- 38:07SPEAKER_02: I will eat soup every day of the year if I could.
- 38:10SPEAKER_05: Get out of here.
- 38:11SPEAKER_05: I'll eat.
- 38:12SPEAKER_05: You'll sit there and eat soup every day.
- 38:14SPEAKER_05: I'll eat soup.
- 38:15SPEAKER_02: I'll eat soup when it's 150 degrees outside.
- 38:17SPEAKER_02: I'll eat soup.
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: I don't care.
- 38:20SPEAKER_05: That's a weird that's that's a weird quirk.
- 38:22SPEAKER_05: I'm not like veganly.
- 38:23SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm not vietin'ly against eating soup in warm weather, but you're like a fierce defender of eating soup.
- 38:29SPEAKER_02: I am because I don't think it's weird.
- 38:32SPEAKER_02: I don't think you need soup when it's cold.
- 38:35SPEAKER_02: Like I thought that's always weird.
- 38:37SPEAKER_02: Like, I I get it.
- 38:38SPEAKER_02: I get to warm you up.
- 38:40SPEAKER_02: It's a I get the appeal broth in your body a lot of hot shit every day.
- 38:44SPEAKER_05: You do, and that's I know that's the that's the real thing, right?
- 38:47SPEAKER_05: I I get that, and that's why I'm not like against eating soup in the summer, but it's uh you cannot let soup be the deciding factor.
- 38:56SPEAKER_05: Soup is great, don't get me wrong, but soup is not a star.
- 39:00SPEAKER_02: Now I'm not gonna pretend like the breadsticks haven't gone down in the past few years, but when you get a good batch of breadsticks at Olive Garden, it is primo.
- 39:10SPEAKER_02: They also have fantastic appetizers.
- 39:12SPEAKER_02: You give me the fried calamari, you give me the you give me the stuffed mushrooms, you give me the oh, it's just oh it's so you're gonna look me straight in the eyes and tell me you want all that over the the skillet queso and they're mad easy chips and salsa.
- 39:26SPEAKER_02: I love me some skill of queso.
- 39:28SPEAKER_05: That's I know you do.
- 39:29SPEAKER_05: You're a huge skillet queso guy.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: I I like skillet queso.
- 39:33SPEAKER_02: I and I more than like it.
- 39:35SPEAKER_02: I do really, really enjoy skillet queso.
- 39:38SPEAKER_05: Okay, you're like bread beat out skillet queso.
- 39:42SPEAKER_02: I I think so.
- 39:43SPEAKER_02: I think that's a good thing.
- 39:46SPEAKER_05: I like it, don't get me wrong, but you can't make a decision.
- 39:49SPEAKER_02: Do you remember when you and me were at your your place in Georgetown and we ordered chilies?
- 39:55SPEAKER_02: It sucked ass.
- 39:57SPEAKER_02: It was awful.
- 39:58SPEAKER_02: It was awful, dude.
- 39:59SPEAKER_02: Dude, the Southwest egg rolls were the worst thing I think I might have ever put.
- 40:03SPEAKER_05: I'm pretty sure we door-dashed it though.
- 40:05SPEAKER_02: So it was a sad night.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: It was a sad night where we door dashed chilies.
- 40:11SPEAKER_01: Jeez, just two guys students watching some games and door dashing chilies.
- 40:17SPEAKER_02: Um, you have you have chilies number one.
- 40:26SPEAKER_02: What's two and three?
- 40:27SPEAKER_05: I I I disclosed this to you before this podcast began that I have not eaten at these places in like 10 years, and that's not an exaggeration.
- 40:38SPEAKER_02: If you put Olive Garden number three, I'm not gonna be friends with you anymore.
- 40:42SPEAKER_05: The last time I ate these places was in high school.
- 40:45SPEAKER_05: Um number two, just if I'm gonna look at them conceptually, it's gonna be red lobster.
- 40:52SPEAKER_05: Stop it.
- 40:53SPEAKER_05: It's gonna be red lobster, yes, because it's rare to just find a seafood restaurant out there.
- 40:59SPEAKER_05: So it's nice to have one there, even if it's gonna be garden variety seafood, you know what I mean?
- 41:06SPEAKER_05: Um, yeah, it's number two for me, dude, because yes, it's just it's a little more exciting because you can find a local Italian food restaurant a little more easy than you can a local seafood restaurant, especially here in the middle of Texas.
- 41:17SPEAKER_05: So it's because I would not say that this is little Italy over here.
- 41:21SPEAKER_05: Come on, get out of here.
- 41:22SPEAKER_05: But it's uh but it's you're not gonna find seafood just everywhere here in the middle of central Texas.
- 41:29SPEAKER_02: We're not we're not comparing little Italy seafood or little little Italian restaurant in the middle of Texas to little seafood restaurant that you can't find in Texas.
- 41:41SPEAKER_02: We're comparing Olive Garden chilies and red lobster.
- 41:46SPEAKER_02: We're not saying because that's like that's like the argument of like uh we like Baylor because we're close, Waco's close to Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston.
- 41:55SPEAKER_02: We don't like Baylor.
- 41:56SPEAKER_02: We don't like that argument.
- 41:57SPEAKER_02: That's the argument you're using right now.
- 42:00SPEAKER_02: And I will say, Chili's is number two, red lobster is three.
- 42:05SPEAKER_02: Big reason Red Lobster is so freaking overpriced, it's ridiculous.
- 42:10SPEAKER_05: Like I would I don't know the price, I don't not know the menu.
- 42:13SPEAKER_02: It's ridiculous.
- 42:14SPEAKER_02: Like an entree is like$24.99 for some very subpar sea food, and we're like versus an a$16 to$18 Italian plate that will fill you up and you will be and two for 20.
- 42:30SPEAKER_02: See the chilies.
- 42:30SPEAKER_02: That's that's why they're number two.
- 42:32SPEAKER_02: They just don't have the options, and some of their food is just absolute garbage.
- 42:37SPEAKER_02: So love me a chicken crisper, love me a uh a skill queso, but the peach tea, the zupa toscana, the breadstick, the uh tour of Italy.
- 42:51SPEAKER_02: Clearly, Olive Garden is number one.
- 42:53SPEAKER_05: Dude, Olive Garden is number three.
- 42:55SPEAKER_05: It's oh no, think about Italian take her somewhere nice.
- 42:59SPEAKER_05: The thing about Italian food is if it's not good, it is just bland cheese on bread, dude.
- 43:06SPEAKER_05: I just it's just spilling, it's not even good.
- 43:10SPEAKER_05: I disagree, boring.
- 43:12SPEAKER_02: I disagree very heavily.
- 43:13SPEAKER_02: I think the worst Italian food and the best Italian food have the smallest difference between a lot of other cuisines.
- 43:22SPEAKER_02: Like, I think if you take the worst of the worst Mexican food and the best Mexican food, there's a huge difference.
- 43:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah, there's an enormous difference.
- 43:29SPEAKER_02: Same, same with Chinese, same with uh American, even.
- 43:33SPEAKER_02: I would say Italian food, if you put a freaking canned Alfredo sauce on top of some boiled noodles, it's gonna be just fine.
- 43:43SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be fine.
- 43:45SPEAKER_02: You're not gonna ever be grossed out by what you're eating.
- 43:49SPEAKER_05: It's because Italian food at the end of the day is kind of boring.
- 43:52SPEAKER_05: Like it's just bread and whatever sauce you're gonna put on it.
- 43:56SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 43:56SPEAKER_05: So my that's my whole point with olive gardens.
- 43:58SPEAKER_05: Like it's in that olive gardens as You know, mass produced as it can get, but to where it's red lobster is not good seafood, like it's not good seafood.
- 44:08SPEAKER_05: I'm sure it's not, but like I said, I I can't remember either of these restaurants at this point, and I'm not even trying to say that as like a snooty, I'm not a snooty, it's there.
- 44:19SPEAKER_05: I I will just not go to these restaurants.
- 44:22SPEAKER_01: Take your wife not on my list.
- 44:25SPEAKER_01: Take your wife on a nice date to Olive Garden and tell me you didn't have a good time.
- 44:29unknown: Stop it.
- 44:30SPEAKER_05: You know, it's it's funny.
- 44:32SPEAKER_05: Like, I got uh I got a an appreciation gift card for coaching.
- 44:37SPEAKER_05: It's like$50 to Olive Garden, and it's still sure.
- 44:41SPEAKER_05: Yes, and he's like, we should still use this, and I we have we just don't use it.
- 44:48SPEAKER_01: Go to Olive Garden, do it.
- 44:51SPEAKER_05: You made all those hours of coaching worth it.
- 44:53SPEAKER_02: I do, I do, I do enjoy the people.
- 44:56SPEAKER_02: So this is uh this is kind of a side note, but my grand aunt, my grandma's sister grand aunt, I guess.
- 45:04SPEAKER_02: She comes in, she lives in Alaska, she comes to down to Texas during the winter, uh, to you know get away from the obscene cold up there.
- 45:13SPEAKER_02: She chooses to go to Red Lobster when she comes down to Texas.
- 45:17SPEAKER_02: That's like her thing.
- 45:19SPEAKER_02: She loves she wants to go to Red Lobster.
- 45:21SPEAKER_05: It'll have it in Alaska.
- 45:23SPEAKER_02: I don't they have ultimately better lobster in Alaska and crab and everything seafood.
- 45:30SPEAKER_02: And we're like, why?
- 45:32SPEAKER_02: Why do you leave Alaska, come to Texas and go to a seafood restaurant?
- 45:36SPEAKER_02: It's ridiculous, a chain seafood restaurant like Red Lobster.
- 45:40SPEAKER_02: But I'm just saying, I love the people that think that these places are actually like a primo dinner, and like I'm not trying to like you know say whatever about whatever class you come from.
- 45:51SPEAKER_02: Sometimes it is a treat, and I understand that, but like it is funny the people that actually think this is like top-tier food.
- 45:59SPEAKER_05: For a while there, their marketing was making it seem that way, but uh everyone is obviously caught on at this point.
- 46:04SPEAKER_05: Um, dude, if I lived in Alaska, I think my skin would turn pink from the amount of salmon I would consume.
- 46:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 46:10SPEAKER_02: I mean, you just I would eat seafood all day long.
- 46:13SPEAKER_02: Like that's that's what they do best up there, and it's just hilarious how she wants to come down here and she's like, let's go to Red Lobster.
- 46:20SPEAKER_02: It's like wild.
- 46:23SPEAKER_02: Can we please eat Mexican food?
- 46:25SPEAKER_02: Like, this is why you come to San Antonio.
- 46:29SPEAKER_05: My god, I can't imagine even like a really good seafood restaurant in San Antonio.
- 46:34SPEAKER_05: You have to be on the coast for really awesome seafood.
- 46:36SPEAKER_05: Maybe it's just the vibe, but I just feel that way.
- 46:38SPEAKER_02: I will give a I will give a shout out to Landry's.
- 46:41SPEAKER_02: It's a it's a chain, it's in a lot of different cities, you know.
- 46:44SPEAKER_02: The Landry's Landry's Seafood House specifically.
- 46:47SPEAKER_02: They have a bunch of different restaurants, but that's good seafood.
- 46:51SPEAKER_02: It's overpriced, but it's good seafood.
- 46:53SPEAKER_02: Also, shout out that was our first date, me and my wife.
- 46:55SPEAKER_02: So all right.
- 46:57SPEAKER_02: Give a shout out, but took her somewhere nice.
- 46:58SPEAKER_05: That wasn't it?
- 47:00SPEAKER_02: Somewhere nice.
- 47:00SPEAKER_02: It wasn't Olive Garden.
- 47:01SPEAKER_02: I should have taken her to Olive Garden.
- 47:03SPEAKER_02: She would have been she would have married me on the spot, I think.
- 47:06SPEAKER_05: All right, well, we we actually have completely different picks on that one.
- 47:09SPEAKER_05: So we did, yeah.
- 47:10SPEAKER_05: Surprising.
- 47:11SPEAKER_02: So you had chilies, red lobster, OG.
- 47:14SPEAKER_02: I had OG Chili's red lobster.
- 47:16SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 47:17SPEAKER_05: So, you know, we agreed somewhat on chilies, yeah.
- 47:21SPEAKER_02: So you can't hate on chilies.
- 47:27SPEAKER_01: Everybody loves a skill a queso and a baby back rib.
- 47:31SPEAKER_05: Oh my god.
- 47:33SPEAKER_05: Again, I only oh wait, no, I we had chilies with you a couple years ago.
- 47:36SPEAKER_01: So yeah.
- 47:37SPEAKER_01: Come on, man.
- 47:38SPEAKER_01: We had chilies.
- 47:41SPEAKER_01: The boys.
- 47:43SPEAKER_02: Just the boys get some chilies.
- 47:45SPEAKER_02: Um, all right.
- 47:46SPEAKER_02: Our our last topic here on debate corner before we get to song of the week.
- 47:50SPEAKER_02: We've had this conversation before.
- 47:52SPEAKER_02: It's been a while, but there's two powerhouse toms in the acting sphere.
- 47:59SPEAKER_02: Battle of the toms.
- 48:00SPEAKER_02: Battle of the toms.
- 48:02SPEAKER_02: It's always it it's a it's a debated topic.
- 48:05SPEAKER_02: Um better actor.
- 48:08SPEAKER_02: Tom Cruise or Tom Hanks?
- 48:12SPEAKER_02: Go ahead.
- 48:14SPEAKER_05: I I know this is gonna be kind of hot takey, but I'm gonna go Tom Cruise.
- 48:18SPEAKER_05: I think Tom Cruise is the movie star of this conversation, and I think Tom Cruise has more range than Tom Hanks does.
- 48:24SPEAKER_05: Um I I I think I think Tom Cruise kind of really is that old school actor in the sense where he gives everything to the role and just really nails it every time.
- 48:36SPEAKER_02: You're wrong.
- 48:38SPEAKER_02: No, you know Tom Hanks is such a boring actor.
- 48:40SPEAKER_02: You couldn't you could not be more wrong.
- 48:43SPEAKER_02: This is this this is awful.
- 48:45SPEAKER_02: This is an awful take that you have.
- 48:47SPEAKER_02: Tom Cruise is the most one-trick pony.
- 48:50SPEAKER_02: He is not, he is an action star.
- 48:53SPEAKER_02: Yes, he is an action star.
- 48:54SPEAKER_02: That's all he does is action movies.
- 48:57SPEAKER_05: Tom Hanks just plays Tom Hanks.
- 48:59SPEAKER_02: No, he doesn't.
- 49:00SPEAKER_02: He plays different people, he tries different things, he's in roads.
- 49:03SPEAKER_02: He's in he's in rom-coms, he's in animated shorts, he's in dramas, he's in comedies, he's in everything.
- 49:10SPEAKER_02: And also, by the way, the best acting performance from either of these guys is Castaway.
- 49:15SPEAKER_02: You know which Tom was that?
- 49:17SPEAKER_02: That was Tom Hanks.
- 49:18SPEAKER_02: He had that movie from start to finish.
- 49:21SPEAKER_02: He played an actor that was the only guy on screen for three-fourths of the movie and absolutely freaking nailed it.
- 49:31SPEAKER_02: So I don't want to hear any of this.
- 49:33SPEAKER_02: Tom Hanks is a one, he does one thing, he plays Tom Hanks.
- 49:38SPEAKER_02: Not true.
- 49:39SPEAKER_02: Tom Hanks is legit, and he is probably the best actor there is.
- 49:43SPEAKER_05: I I don't I don't want to disagree with you too much on the castaway thing because you know, I I I I ashamedly have never seen are you kidding me?
- 49:52SPEAKER_05: You've never watched Castaway.
- 49:54SPEAKER_02: I have not seen it.
- 49:55SPEAKER_02: This is why you're choosing Tom Cruise.
- 49:56SPEAKER_02: Go watch Castaway, get back to me.
- 49:59SPEAKER_05: Uh, but even even still, I feel like it's a hot take.
- 50:01SPEAKER_05: I feel like saving Private Ryan would be Tom Hanks's best film.
- 50:06SPEAKER_02: And it it might be, it might be his best film.
- 50:09SPEAKER_02: He's playing in he's playing an action hero, he's playing in you know, a war.
- 50:14SPEAKER_02: What what was he, a general?
- 50:15SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 50:16SPEAKER_05: He was playing and and and uh saving private ryan, no, he was just a captain.
- 50:21SPEAKER_02: Oh, he was just a cat.
- 50:22SPEAKER_02: Okay, whatever.
- 50:23SPEAKER_02: He was great in that movie, he was great in the green mile, he was great in Castle, he's great in Forrest Gump.
- 50:27SPEAKER_02: I mean, he's uh he's in rom-coms, like some of the best rom coms, sleepless in Seattle.
- 50:32SPEAKER_02: I mean, he is he's in uh catch me if you can with Leo DiCaprio.
- 50:37SPEAKER_02: He's fantastic.
- 50:39SPEAKER_02: There's so many good movies that Tom Hanks is the lead and basically carries the movie.
- 50:45SPEAKER_05: I I just think that Tom Cruise is the star of his movies, you know, he is he is magnetic on the screen.
- 50:53SPEAKER_05: Like it's it's kind of been like whenever whenever Top Gun Maverick came out, which was freaking awesome.
- 50:59SPEAKER_05: It was um, he it was like said over and over again like is Tom Cruise the last movie star, Hollywood movie star out there, and you kind of get the way you people feel that way with how he performs and how everything's just kind of glued to him on the screen.
- 51:15SPEAKER_05: Like the guy can act his ass off.
- 51:17SPEAKER_05: And I know it's you're saying that he's this one trick pony, but his action capability is is sick.
- 51:25SPEAKER_05: He makes action movies good because most of the time action movies are they're fun, but they're not good.
- 51:30SPEAKER_05: But the action movies he are in, he he he are in, he is in, are awesome, like and they're good movies.
- 51:36SPEAKER_05: Like you have to be a real hater to hate on Top Gun, okay, and uh other other than the other flicks he's been in.
- 51:43SPEAKER_05: Like the uh the Mission Impulse movies are actually good, they're like James Bond, good.
- 51:49SPEAKER_02: They're good movies, like I'm not denying that.
- 51:51SPEAKER_02: Neither of these guys are bad actors, but what what I think the difference here is is first off the range, Tom Cruise does he just doesn't do much outside of those action movies.
- 52:04SPEAKER_05: Uh Tropic Thunder.
- 52:08SPEAKER_02: Um Tropic Thunder.
- 52:10SPEAKER_02: He was funny in that.
- 52:12SPEAKER_02: He was funny in that, but he was just a side character, he wasn't like a main guy there.
- 52:17SPEAKER_02: Uh also he's just he doesn't like when we're talking about best actor, we're not talking about biggest movie star, we're talking about the best actor, the guy that puts on the best performance, the guy that sells you the most on that character in that specific movie.
- 52:34SPEAKER_02: And for Tom Cruise, I see Tom Cruise.
- 52:37SPEAKER_02: I see the guy who's Tom Hanks.
- 52:39SPEAKER_05: We were watching Tom Hanks.
- 52:40SPEAKER_02: No, I see Tom Hanks as the different characters.
- 52:43SPEAKER_02: I see he's known as like Forrest Gump.
- 52:46SPEAKER_02: I mean, he is like he's such a he's such a does different stuff.
- 52:51SPEAKER_02: He does different, he's funny at times, he's very serious at times.
- 52:55SPEAKER_02: All tom cruise does is you know stand on the imaginary wire and go down and you know steal something or whatever they do in the Mission Impossible movies.
- 53:04SPEAKER_02: I mean, he does.
- 53:05SPEAKER_02: I will give him credit, he does some crazy stuff, he does all these stuff, yeah.
- 53:09SPEAKER_02: He does his stuff that's nuts.
- 53:11SPEAKER_02: That's crazy, that's awesome.
- 53:12SPEAKER_02: You're a great action star, you're not the best actor, you don't you don't do the best acting.
- 53:18SPEAKER_05: I I I just feel like the Tom Hanks thing, it's like for some reason P kind of just got this thing glued to him that he's the best actor, and I'm not sure it's between him and Denzel, it's between him and Denzel of all time.
- 53:30SPEAKER_05: Are we saying like of all time?
- 53:32SPEAKER_05: Of all time, who's your all time?
- 53:34SPEAKER_05: Who's nobody?
- 53:35SPEAKER_05: That's a good question.
- 53:36SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 53:37unknown: I don't know.
- 53:38SPEAKER_05: It's about those two guys.
- 53:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, is there a best actor of all time?
- 53:42SPEAKER_05: Because it's not like athletes where you can like compare stats and stuff, it's purely subjective.
- 53:48SPEAKER_02: It is, it's purely subjective with like a subjective mixed in with like you can compare like Oscars and all that kind of junk, but like nobody does that.
- 53:57SPEAKER_05: But those are subjective as well, those aren't like really earned stats, it's just they are decided that they're gonna get them.
- 54:02SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 54:02SPEAKER_02: I mean, this is all subjective.
- 54:04SPEAKER_02: Every debate corner, the chilies, olive garden, red lobster is subjective.
- 54:08SPEAKER_05: But that was real, like chilies was clearly the best.
- 54:10SPEAKER_05: Like, if you're gonna go to one of those, if you're gonna go to one of those often, I think I'd want it to be chilies out of all three.
- 54:18SPEAKER_02: Not true, really.
- 54:19SPEAKER_05: Like, if you're if you're grabbing beers with the boys, you're going you go into chilies or the olive garden.
- 54:24SPEAKER_02: That's a that's a different scenario.
- 54:26SPEAKER_02: I'm not hey, it's still the restaurant.
- 54:28SPEAKER_02: We're just still the restaurant.
- 54:30SPEAKER_02: If we're just grabbing beers, yeah, chilies is the choice.
- 54:34SPEAKER_02: You showing up with the fellas.
- 54:36SPEAKER_02: Uh table for four.
- 54:37SPEAKER_02: Table for four for Olive Garden, please.
- 54:40SPEAKER_02: Just me and the boys.
- 54:41SPEAKER_02: No, that's not the that's not the point of this.
- 54:44SPEAKER_02: It's what is the best food, but back to this topic.
- 54:47SPEAKER_05: We're gonna do a top one.
- 54:49SPEAKER_02: We might have to we might have to.
- 54:51SPEAKER_02: I think Chili's will probably win.
- 54:53SPEAKER_05: That's what I'm talking about, baby.
- 54:54SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm very strongly in favor of Olive Garden here.
- 54:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you have you have an affinity towards the OG, but the OG OG's good.
- 55:02SPEAKER_05: I I don't know, man.
- 55:03SPEAKER_05: I I I think I just saw I I taught you know, Top Gun Maverick and was like, holy shit, this movie is so good and fun.
- 55:12SPEAKER_05: And that was like the first time I really felt that way in the movie theater since pre-COVID.
- 55:18SPEAKER_05: You know, like like that was truly like I was like, I am watching a Hollywood blockbuster right now, and it is kicking ass.
- 55:25SPEAKER_05: And that not even just a Hollywood blockbuster, one that doesn't have any superheroes and shit in it.
- 55:31SPEAKER_02: Like, it's just you're very anti- You're very anti-Marvel.
- 55:35SPEAKER_05: I feel like Marvel has ruined Hollywood, and I'm sick of it because it that's the only movies that these studios will make anymore, and it's exhausting.
- 55:45SPEAKER_02: Well, Marvel's hitting a downswing, so thank god you're getting your wish.
- 55:49SPEAKER_05: You're getting like uh wishing for all this shit to die, but it's just like you can make other movies, dude.
- 55:56SPEAKER_02: We can, we can, and I agree to a point that other movies should be allowed to make be made, you know.
- 56:03SPEAKER_02: The studios aren't picking up as many, you know, new ideas or extra, you know, different from a uh a franchise or something of that nature, you know, they're not making as many unique stories that's more being pushed to television here, so that kind of sucks because I love me a good movie, but um yeah, no, I I just think you uh first off, the best movie of of either of these actors' uh resumes is The Green Mile, in my opinion.
- 56:33SPEAKER_02: I think The Green Mile is uh probably a top five, top three movie for me all time.
- 56:39SPEAKER_02: Um that movie made me feel things that I didn't think I would feel when watching a movie.
- 56:44SPEAKER_02: I cried when I watched that movie.
- 56:46SPEAKER_02: It would when John Coffey went down, I was like, oh man, this is actually getting to me.
- 56:52SPEAKER_02: So that one obviously Forrest Gump, the classic.
- 56:56SPEAKER_02: Catch me if you can.
- 56:57SPEAKER_02: It's more led by Leo.
- 56:58SPEAKER_02: Leo's fantastic in it, but Tom Hanks is just like an ultimate like side guy, like the secondary character who's in it for the majority of the movie.
- 57:08SPEAKER_02: But I his best acting performance is Castaway.
- 57:11SPEAKER_02: You need to watch it because it is it's tremendous how you can so engage to one person that is on an island by himself, acting with nobody else, not feeding off anything, not going off anything, but it's just him and the freaking volleyball, and they're on an island and it's captivating.
- 57:30SPEAKER_05: He listens some really great movies.
- 57:33SPEAKER_05: Don't get me wrong, but whenever I'm like scrolling through both of their filmography, that's why I've been looking at my phone.
- 57:38SPEAKER_05: Um, I'm seeing more movies I enjoy from Tom Hanks.
- 57:42SPEAKER_05: I mean, from from Tom Cruise than I do Tom Hanks.
- 57:46SPEAKER_02: Like, what?
- 57:46SPEAKER_05: What are as I just go through this?
- 57:48SPEAKER_02: But what aren't a franchise that Tom Hanks does or Tom Cruise does?
- 57:52SPEAKER_05: The Last Samurai is a sick movie.
- 57:56SPEAKER_02: I haven't seen that one.
- 57:56SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna I'm gonna rules.
- 57:58SPEAKER_02: I haven't seen The Last Samurai.
- 58:00SPEAKER_02: I know a lot of people love it.
- 58:01SPEAKER_05: Rain Man is a great film as well.
- 58:04SPEAKER_05: Rain Man's a good one.
- 58:05SPEAKER_05: Uh Edge of Tomorrow was also an awesome action movie.
- 58:09SPEAKER_05: Um really great.
- 58:10SPEAKER_05: Same in Oblivion, also a really great action film.
- 58:14SPEAKER_05: Valkyrie was a fun movie as well.
- 58:16SPEAKER_05: Uh, the Nazi one.
- 58:18SPEAKER_02: I think the only argument you can have against Tom Hanks in this argument is the last like 10 years.
- 58:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 58:25SPEAKER_02: He's the last time you made a movie where like, wow, he really hasn't made a lot that you're just like, whoa, this is nuts.
- 58:30SPEAKER_02: I think A Man Called Otto was pretty good.
- 58:32SPEAKER_02: I I saw that one, that was a good movie.
- 58:34SPEAKER_02: But like he had a lot of he had some duds, you know.
- 58:37SPEAKER_02: I didn't think the Sully movie was great.
- 58:40SPEAKER_02: I didn't think you know, I he had one real dud.
- 58:43SPEAKER_02: I can't remember the name of it because it was clearly a bad movie.
- 58:46SPEAKER_02: Um, but I I just think overall his 90s stuff, he had a stretch there where it was just stupid, like he made hit after hit after hit, and he was just non-stop.
- 58:58SPEAKER_02: So yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 59:01SPEAKER_05: He was really spitting some magic in the 90s, but that was a great point.
- 59:04SPEAKER_05: Like this century, it's been kind of a rough showing here.
- 59:07SPEAKER_05: Like it's fair, it's I just said how you know Maverick blew my socks off when I saw it in the theaters.
- 59:14SPEAKER_05: So Maverick was good.
- 59:15SPEAKER_02: Again, it's an action movie.
- 59:17SPEAKER_02: You're not getting it.
- 59:18SPEAKER_05: I I know you're gonna discredit the action movie a little bit.
- 59:21SPEAKER_02: It's great, it's a good movie.
- 59:22SPEAKER_02: I love Top Gun Maverick.
- 59:23SPEAKER_02: It was a good movie.
- 59:24SPEAKER_02: I love the original Top Gun.
- 59:25SPEAKER_02: They're they're his stuff is good.
- 59:28SPEAKER_02: Like Tom Cruise is a good action star, he is a great movie star.
- 59:32SPEAKER_02: He's probably more of a movie star than Tom Hanks is, but we're talking about better actor here, and I think Tom Hanks is just more diverse, he does a lot of stuff better.
- 59:40SPEAKER_05: So, do you think both of these guys clear Brad Pitt and Leo as well?
- 59:45SPEAKER_02: I don't know, man.
- 59:46SPEAKER_02: I like I would probably put Leo above Cruz.
- 59:50SPEAKER_05: Wow, really?
- 59:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 59:53SPEAKER_05: They're all but all four of these guys are just like probably this the most famous American actors ever.
- 59:59SPEAKER_05: I'm sure the only guys, men, though, I'm sure the only guys that come close are like John Wayne and uh that's when it gets to old shit, but like Denzel's up there too.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_02: I think Denzel's unbelievable.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_02: So yeah, Denzel.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you gotta throw Denzel in there too.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_02: So you gotta throw Denzel in there.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_02: That's probably that's probably the core five, though.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you get the two toms, Leo, Brad Pitt, and and uh Denzel.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_02: That's probably your top five in whatever order you want to put them in.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_02: But yeah, um, this was just a debate of the toms.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_02: You still think it's Cruz, I think it's Hanks.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_05: Let's see what the people think.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_02: Let's see what the people think.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_05: I like how the Chili's one was hotter than the top one.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_01: Well, we just had a very heated argument two weeks ago about mustard.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_05: So you and I were just pupping on a cornpipe about the actors.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_05: Well, see.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_01: I like debate cornered.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_01: It's a good, it's a good we're bringing back it.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_01: It's got the two for 20.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_01: It's just bread and cheese.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_01: All right, man.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_02: Let's give the people a break from our stupidity and finish off with a song of the week.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_02: Go ahead.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_05: All right, so my song of the week, I'm gonna keep it fun.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_05: Um I am just the biggest stan of these two underappreciated, unpopular country artists in Drew Kennedy and Josh Grider.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_05: I think they're both awesome.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_05: And they have this fun project where they get together, they're best friends, and they they get together and make and make music, and this is their third volume of tunes together of being the Topo Chico Cowboys.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_05: That's what they've coined themselves as.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_05: Um, and they released their theme song, and I vibe with this theme song because I kind of relate to this theme song.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_05: I feel like I feel some of myself in this theme song, and that theme song is The Topo Chico Cowboy by the Topo Chico Cowboys and Drew Kennedy and Joe Josh Grider.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_05: Just a feel-good song.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_05: They're clearly having fun with the with the production, with adding some like poppy like beats behind it and stuff that's just kind of making you feel bubbly, like a bottle of Topo Chico.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_05: So I am gonna go Topo Chico Cowboy.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_06: You'll take a tequila with the little squeeze of lime.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_06: He's just a Topo Chico Cowboy.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_06: Living in the here and now.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_02: Very nice, very nice.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_02: We love West Texas Cloud Appreciation.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_02: That was another good hit, yes, uh, from you or early in the podcast.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_02: That was like top 50 episodes, probably.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_02: Um, good, good choice.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_02: We like that combo.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_02: Drew Kennedy is an all-timer, Josh Grider.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_02: I don't know enough of his solo stuff to really give an opinion.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_02: I like his stuff he does with Drew.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_05: Very George Trady.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we like well, that's not a bad guy to be compared to.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_05: No, so no.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_02: Um, cool.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_02: My song of the week, much like Patrick Mahomes Sr.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_02: Uh, our guy Darius Rucker was also arrested this week.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_02: I saw that.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_02: Free my man's.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_02: Free my man, Darius Rucker.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_02: I think he did get free.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_02: Um, he was a minor drug, minor drug charge, uh, misdemeanor, some pills, maybe of marijuana pen.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_02: So what who cares?
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_05: So what who cares?
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_05: He's a rock star.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_02: Someone who cares.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_02: Darius Rucker is one of the guys that I have managed to still like, um, you know, despite their fame and getting into more of a Nashville type of poppy uh country.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_02: But there's one album that you and me hold near and dear to our hearts, and that's Charleston 1966.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_05: Wow, are we going that far back?
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_02: We're going that far back right now with D Ruck.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_02: Um, the song of the week that I have chosen off of that album is I Got Nothing.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_02: It is a very sad song.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_02: It's about um a man and his wife divorcing, and basically after a fight, it's like the last straw, and it's just like she's waiting for him to say something, and he's got nothing.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_02: He can't, he doesn't even know what to say at this point, and she walks out the door, and it's just like a good, like uh it's just a good story.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_02: I mean, you like I I've obviously have never been in that position, you've never been in that position.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_02: Uh, but I think a lot of people have been in that position where they've gone through divorce and they've gone through a separation with their significant other that they've committed their lives to each other.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_02: And it's just like I feel like it can relate to a lot of people.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_02: Um, and it's just it's just like you feel it in the song.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_02: You really feel you start to put yourself in that person's shoes and what they may feel after that.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_02: But um, yeah, that's that's my song of the week.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_02: I got nothing, Darius Rucker.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_04: Maybe I should pick it up and get down on my knees.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_01: Tell you what you wanna hear, and give you what you need, but I got nothing.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_05: Wow, you really brought down the vibe.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_01: It's a it's a good song, though.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_05: It's really good, it's a really good song.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_05: That album is phenomenal.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_05: You know what one of my things is whenever I'm alone and uh you know, cracking cold ones, I just throw on old country music music videos, and I I know I watched that like a couple nights ago.
- 1:05:19SPEAKER_02: So the Lone Stars were flowing, they were flowing, dog, a little derug.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_02: So um, yeah, man.
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_02: Anything else before we close it out here?
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_05: That does it for me.
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_05: Tom Cruise is the better Tom.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_05: She's the better of those magnificent restaurants.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_02: The big three OG rules.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_01: The big three, the big American three, the big three of OG the lobster, and chilies baby bag, baby bag with the big American two actors.
