Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Absolutely Tommy FAM's listen Tommy Fam. He fights all winter
- 0:04Speaker 1: to fuck guys up, he said it.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Welcome into North Side Territory, your Cubs podcast hosted by
- 0:20Speaker 2: Foul Territory. I'm Sahade Sharma with my co host Patrick Mooney.
- 0:25Speaker 2: We cover the Cubs and today we have a guest
- 0:30Speaker 2: from the Athletic, John Greenberg, to talk about the White Sox.
- 0:34Speaker 3: John, Thanks for joining us. Okay, let's get right to it.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Where you've covered all Chicago sports, right, all Chicago sports.
- 0:44Speaker 3: You've covered a lot of messes in this city. Where
- 0:48Speaker 3: is this?
- 0:49Speaker 2: I mean there's been a few White Sox messes over
- 0:51Speaker 2: the past few years too, But where does this mess
- 0:54Speaker 2: right now rank among what you've witnessed.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Well, first, I want a little more enthusiastic with my intro.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Special guests.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, like I mean, get a little enthusiasm. I
- 1:06Speaker 1: mean I hired you just the Athletic when when it
- 1:08Speaker 1: was nothing.
- 1:08Speaker 2: But now, I mean, all right, lack of lack of
- 1:14Speaker 2: enthusiasm here. I'm not as pumped for cups of white
- 1:17Speaker 2: socks as I should be.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I know, I know, I remember we used to get
- 1:21Speaker 1: pumped for this, But yeah, where does this writ I
- 1:25Speaker 1: mean this is pretty bad. I think this is at
- 1:27Speaker 1: the bottom of for the White Sox for sure. And
- 1:29Speaker 1: I mean we've had a lot of messages, you know,
- 1:31Speaker 1: and Ozzie Gean get traded at the end of a season.
- 1:35Speaker 1: I mean we had, you know, a guy retire because
- 1:38Speaker 1: his kid couldn't field grounders with the team. Yeah, the
- 1:42Speaker 1: guy cut jerseys up before a game. I mean, you
- 1:45Speaker 1: had last year was terrible. This is the bottom though, right,
- 1:49Speaker 1: I mean, because it's like every day it's the manager.
- 1:52Speaker 1: You're either making fun of the manager, the freaking TV
- 1:55Speaker 1: play by play guy. I mean, this is like and
- 1:59Speaker 1: they're fifteen forty five, they're thirty games under five hundred,
- 2:03Speaker 1: and listen, they weren't supposed to be good this year.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Last year is worse because they were actually supposed to
- 2:07Speaker 1: be Like, you know, they weren't picked to do very
- 2:10Speaker 1: well last year. But people they could have won, you know,
- 2:12Speaker 1: they could have won the Central Ale Central last years.
- 2:15Speaker 1: It wasn't impossible with the talent they had this year.
- 2:18Speaker 1: I mean, Chris gets is pretty straightforward. Even though he
- 2:20Speaker 1: tried for a while to say they weren't rebuilding, he
- 2:22Speaker 1: eventually relented and I talked to him about that, and
- 2:25Speaker 1: he realized it was kind of stupid to say, like,
- 2:28Speaker 1: you know, we're not rebuilding when like you trade Dylan
- 2:31Speaker 1: Ceason spring training.
- 2:33Speaker 3: But this is supposed to be a quicker turnaround. That's
- 2:35Speaker 3: why they hired Gets. It's a quick time.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I think, I mean, like we're having Obviously we
- 2:39Speaker 1: can have fun with Jerry on that because he saw
- 2:42Speaker 1: he like totally torpedoed Gets from the beginning in terms
- 2:45Speaker 1: with that terrible introduction. Yeah, but I did think the
- 2:48Speaker 1: point he was making, and I've talked about this with
- 2:50Speaker 1: Gets too, is that I think Gets kind of told
- 2:53Speaker 1: him like, yeah, I know what's wrong with this organization,
- 2:57Speaker 1: so hiring me, you know, we could at least like
- 3:01Speaker 1: get it done a little quicker because I know all
- 3:03Speaker 1: the problems we have, So I get that a little more.
- 3:05Speaker 1: That doesn't mean we can't keep making fun of Jerry,
- 3:07Speaker 1: because we should because he said so many crazy things
- 3:10Speaker 1: and sounded so dumb talking about branch rickey. But like
- 3:14Speaker 1: I do get the point now on the flip side,
- 3:17Speaker 1: if you want to know why Jerry is such a
- 3:19Speaker 1: bad owner, I mean not bad owner, but let's just
- 3:21Speaker 1: say unsuccessful owner because he does do some stuff. I
- 3:25Speaker 1: you know, it's fine, But like why he is so
- 3:27Speaker 1: unsuccessful is the fact that he made Gets and we
- 3:30Speaker 1: pretty much know this without Gets telling us, made him
- 3:32Speaker 1: keep Pedro grifall for this year because you signed a
- 3:35Speaker 1: three year deal. He don't want to pay him off
- 3:37Speaker 1: for two years, even though he's probably making like nothing.
- 3:41Speaker 1: You know, Get Jerry should have said, all right, you
- 3:43Speaker 1: can take over, do whatever you want with manager. That's
- 3:46Speaker 1: what a good owner does. Like they didn't make it's
- 3:48Speaker 1: a difference a situation, but they didn't tell THEO. You
- 3:50Speaker 1: have to keep my Quadi around, you know, and he's qua,
- 3:54Speaker 1: He's below Quaddy. I mean, Pedro's sub quady. So like
- 3:59Speaker 1: the fact that they kept them around and now there's
- 4:01Speaker 1: issues with the players, you know, really tells you why
- 4:05Speaker 1: this team stinks here and in.
- 4:06Speaker 4: You're Out, John, you had an awesome column up in
- 4:10Speaker 4: The Athletic about the relationship between Jed Hoyer and Chris Gets.
- 4:15Speaker 4: You had kind of teased this column idea to us
- 4:18Speaker 4: and not doubting your reporting shops or charms, but I
- 4:22Speaker 4: wasn't quite We weren't quite sure, like if they would
- 4:24Speaker 4: actually go through with it. Could you explain kind of
- 4:26Speaker 4: the genesis of that story, as well as this blossoming
- 4:31Speaker 4: bromance on the north Shore.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, it's a it's a relationship made in Weineka.
- 4:39Speaker 1: You know how hard it is you moved to the suburbs.
- 4:41Speaker 1: It's tough making guy friends like something to talk about.
- 4:46Speaker 1: I don't remember how I knew they. I think I
- 4:47Speaker 1: just found out they were from talking to them that
- 4:49Speaker 1: they were friends. I think Jed probably told me Chris
- 4:53Speaker 1: had become friends and Wineka and their wives had become
- 4:55Speaker 1: close and all that stuff. So I thought, yeah, that
- 4:58Speaker 1: would be an interesting column to write. And I was like,
- 5:00Speaker 1: I'll just wait till cub Socks to do it. Yeah,
- 5:04Speaker 1: because I mean they've it makes sense. I mean they're
- 5:06Speaker 1: a lot alike. But like I yeah, this friendship's kind
- 5:09Speaker 1: of rare, Like they weren't close with Han, I think
- 5:12Speaker 1: from what I know, I think Jed and Hunt used
- 5:14Speaker 1: to be closed and then I kind of cooled off
- 5:15Speaker 1: with Cub Socks and now they're friendly again. But yeah,
- 5:19Speaker 1: so gets in him are closely and Jed gives I'm
- 5:23Speaker 1: not saying tells Chris what to do at all, obviously,
- 5:25Speaker 1: but like he's there for advice it's like a sounding board.
- 5:27Speaker 1: And when Gets took over, he said there were some
- 5:29Speaker 1: simple things like he asked him how often do you travel?
- 5:33Speaker 1: Like how often should I travel with the team because
- 5:35Speaker 1: they don't, you know, Gems don't travel every series anymore
- 5:37Speaker 1: because they want to stay married. So yeah, some that
- 5:41Speaker 1: stuff like how often you travel? How often do you
- 5:42Speaker 1: go down in the little clubhouse? You know, what are
- 5:45Speaker 1: some of the things you've learned over the years that
- 5:47Speaker 1: you know with the rebuilding stuff. You know, they talk
- 5:49Speaker 1: about that, and there's a funny thing I kind of
- 5:52Speaker 1: hinted at it in there, but like early in the season,
- 5:55Speaker 1: I found myself at like a North Shore a Wineka
- 5:58Speaker 1: Smoothie co plays because I just dropped something off to
- 6:02Speaker 1: my wife at work and I was taking Green Bay
- 6:04Speaker 1: back home and I'm like, I'm going to stop and
- 6:06Speaker 1: do some work and Gets walked in and it was
- 6:09Speaker 1: right when I don't remember the order of how the
- 6:11Speaker 1: all three of the stars on the White Sox got
- 6:14Speaker 1: hurt running to first base in like a week, but
- 6:17Speaker 1: it was I think the second, well whoever was second
- 6:19Speaker 1: they got hurt And I was talking to Gets there
- 6:23Speaker 1: and he was like we had talked about this kind
- 6:25Speaker 1: of story idea before and he's like, hey, I just
- 6:27Speaker 1: got off the film with Jed and he was like
- 6:28Speaker 1: he did an impression of Jed being.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Like, how are you doing?
- 6:33Speaker 1: And like Gets at least could laugh about it because
- 6:36Speaker 1: he's you know, he gets it. He knew what he
- 6:38Speaker 1: was in for this season. So yeah, so they just
- 6:42Speaker 1: they they've there friends, they did family you know plans,
- 6:45Speaker 1: and the wives are trapped going to the game together
- 6:48Speaker 1: at Wrigley and Gets was laughing with me. I'm like,
- 6:50Speaker 1: is that gonna be okay? He's like, yeah, you know,
- 6:51Speaker 1: they get pretty competitive. He's like, he's like, Merrill might
- 6:55Speaker 1: have to find her own ride home. Like he was
- 6:59Speaker 1: kind of laughing about that. And I was like, hey,
- 7:00Speaker 1: did you know did the Hoyers set Did Jed set
- 7:03Speaker 1: you guys up? With everything he goes? You know, he hasn't.
- 7:06Speaker 1: He's like, if it was, he was like, if the
- 7:08Speaker 1: game is a guaranteed rate, first, I would have had
- 7:09Speaker 1: him all set up. But he's like, I guess I'm
- 7:11Speaker 1: just a better friend.
- 7:13Speaker 2: So what They're just sitting in the seats somewhere, well,
- 7:17Speaker 2: I think.
- 7:17Speaker 1: The yeah, I don't know wherever the wive seats are
- 7:19Speaker 1: I would assume. I don't know, if I don't know,
- 7:21Speaker 1: maybe don't know. Maybe Jed's family just has a suite.
- 7:23Speaker 1: I didn't really get that that point of it. But
- 7:25Speaker 1: Jed and and Chris will not be sitting together.
- 7:29Speaker 3: To me is that he will not be That would
- 7:31Speaker 3: be honest. I think that that would be. I'm not
- 7:33Speaker 3: sure if I've seen that before.
- 7:35Speaker 1: I love that.
- 7:37Speaker 4: I love that image in your calmn of like Jed
- 7:41Speaker 4: recognizing gets just walking around wandering.
- 7:44Speaker 3: On the phone.
- 7:45Speaker 4: Because when we were all on Bellinger Watch in spring training,
- 7:48Speaker 4: you just kept seeing Jed on the phone, like taking
- 7:51Speaker 4: laps on an empty you know, minor league practice field,
- 7:55Speaker 4: no doubt, was just listening to Boris I'm assuming just
- 8:00Speaker 4: kinda go off.
- 8:02Speaker 1: But I was gonna say, Jed told me he walks
- 8:06Speaker 1: the neighborhood. Honest, Yeah, I can totally see that. Yeah,
- 8:09Speaker 1: because he's like, my family's sick of hearing me, and
- 8:12Speaker 1: like even though he's got like a mansion and then
- 8:14Speaker 1: another mansion next door, for some reason, they still need
- 8:17Speaker 1: to feels like they must have really good ears. He
- 8:21Speaker 1: still feelsn't need to walk the streets. But yeah, that
- 8:23Speaker 1: was when I'm trying to think of a lead of
- 8:24Speaker 1: a column, you know, how to lead this. I was like,
- 8:27Speaker 1: I like to do an anecdotal lead usually, and that
- 8:29Speaker 1: was like a perfect description Jed was giving me. Jed's
- 8:33Speaker 1: so funny, so like give me things. He's like, maybe
- 8:35Speaker 1: you should lead with this, and he wanted me to
- 8:41Speaker 1: lead with which didn't make any sense. But he he
- 8:45Speaker 1: was actually at a game, a travel game against his kid,
- 8:48Speaker 1: was playing Ryan Poles's kid, the Bears GM, and just
- 8:52Speaker 1: just like an extra thing, and he said Poles actually
- 8:54Speaker 1: tipped him on our docks and told him they were
- 8:56Speaker 1: going to be on it. But he's like, you know,
- 8:57Speaker 1: you can talk about that too. And I'm like, all right, Jet,
- 8:59Speaker 1: that doesn't really you got too many. I mean, let
- 9:02Speaker 1: me do the writing, you do, the the act you do,
- 9:05Speaker 1: the you worry about Nick Madrigal and where he's gone.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Oh man, I did see Jed's kids the other day
- 9:13Speaker 2: at a travel game, because yeah, so I saw them
- 9:17Speaker 2: running around. Uh so apparently there's all sorts of GM's kids.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Did you give him any advice, like, you know, maybe
- 9:24Speaker 2: trade for reliever? I was like, how about the offense?
- 9:28Speaker 2: How funny would Bopeck be?
- 9:30Speaker 1: It a Wrigley because people would just be going ape
- 9:33Speaker 1: shit when he's like giving it, you know what I mean,
- 9:35Speaker 1: He's so wild, He's perfect for this unpredictable bullpen. He
- 9:39Speaker 1: would like to fit in. He would fit in so
- 9:41Speaker 1: well with the way the Cubs bullpen has been been going.
- 9:44Speaker 1: But yeah, I wouldn't be. Like I did joke with
- 9:47Speaker 1: them about there. I was like, you know, do you guys,
- 9:48Speaker 1: how's how it? Where's the Bailey Horn Matthew Thompson deal? Uh?
- 9:52Speaker 1: You know executed? But he basically said that was that
- 9:55Speaker 1: was beneath them, That was done by the people underneath them.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Though Gets did say he had some converse stations with
- 10:00Speaker 1: Carter Hawkins about it, but that was, you know, not
- 10:03Speaker 1: exactly the Kintana for Eloy and c.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Blockbuster Carter gets the Matt Thompson and Bailey Horn deal.
- 10:11Speaker 3: That's the puts on av Uh?
- 10:15Speaker 2: Is there is there any excuse for not winning two
- 10:19Speaker 2: games this week for the Cups against the White Sox?
- 10:22Speaker 1: Is there? What fifteen and forty five some of us
- 10:27Speaker 1: eleven straight games? Like you can't win? I mean, like listen,
- 10:31Speaker 1: we know, I mean it's baseball, right, Things can happen,
- 10:33Speaker 1: But they've got good pitchers going. You know, they've got
- 10:36Speaker 1: their good starters. So if the Cubs hit her, I mean, like, yeah,
- 10:40Speaker 1: Eric Vetty's pretty good. So and he's pitching. He's pitching
- 10:43Speaker 1: the Wednesday game, so flexens you know, can be okay.
- 10:47Speaker 1: You know he's not He's not horrible all the time,
- 10:49Speaker 1: which is all the best you could say for the
- 10:51Speaker 1: White Sox. No, there's no I mean, like you know,
- 10:55Speaker 1: with the caveat that it's baseball.
- 10:57Speaker 2: No, there's no excuse for for losing one of these games.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Is there a viral moment gonna happen? Are you predicting?
- 11:03Speaker 1: I mean, Tommy Fam Tommy Fam plan, they gotta start
- 11:07Speaker 1: Tommy Fan both games, like demanding it. We're demanding Tommy Fam. Absolutely,
- 11:12Speaker 1: Tommy FAM's listen, Tommy Fam trains he fights all winter
- 11:17Speaker 1: to fuck guys up. He said it. So that was
- 11:22Speaker 1: one of the I mean, hands down, one of the
- 11:23Speaker 1: funniest post game quotes, like wild because like post games
- 11:29Speaker 1: now are like a way of dream, you know, post
- 11:31Speaker 1: game like you don't get anything that great usually, guys,
- 11:34Speaker 1: everyone just wants to leave. That's fantastic. I'm absolutely going
- 11:38Speaker 1: I am camping out in the White Sox clubhouse this week.
- 11:42Speaker 4: It's funny too because, uh, you know big Z was
- 11:45Speaker 4: at Wrigley this past weekend or something him and like,
- 11:50Speaker 4: you know, he was the guy particularly in Cub Socks
- 11:53Speaker 4: of like you never knew what he might say post game.
- 11:55Speaker 4: And we were recently in Bush stadiums Is visiting clubhouse
- 11:59Speaker 4: and that's where the West quote game, and like Tommy
- 12:03Speaker 4: FAM's quote was like exponentially better than Biggs's. Biggsy did
- 12:08Speaker 4: physically like you know acost teammates, and like there was
- 12:13Speaker 4: just that physical energy once he got in between the
- 12:15Speaker 4: lines that you never quite knew. But like watching that play,
- 12:19Speaker 4: seeing you know, uh, Contrari's just gonna say something then
- 12:23Speaker 4: just walk away or whatever his full quote and then
- 12:28Speaker 4: they like because we were just in Milwaukee too, of
- 12:31Speaker 4: the walk away to it looked like you know, where
- 12:34Speaker 4: like the food room was. It was just so perfect,
- 12:36Speaker 4: like Mike drop, let's go, and he is probably our
- 12:39Speaker 4: only hope for like cub Socks fireworks.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Here's the other one. What if John Shriffin like punch
- 12:45Speaker 1: goes and punches boog or something because he loves the
- 12:48Speaker 1: White Sox so much. Shrippin is stripping and fam are
- 12:52Speaker 1: the two wild cards of the series because you know,
- 12:55Speaker 1: like Shriffan's getting this excited for like random games. You know,
- 12:58Speaker 1: he's gonna go the extra asle for he's gonna get
- 13:02Speaker 1: He's gonna get a little silly, and I'm hoping he does.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Like I'm I'm gonna have to take the games. What
- 13:08Speaker 1: was the because people tweaked the videos like it's like
- 13:12Speaker 1: necessarily instantly a.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Few Cubs quote when when Eloy hit that bomb against
- 13:18Speaker 2: the Cubs, Yeah, that was a good one.
- 13:22Speaker 3: Shriffin's got a top that somehow.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Oh, he's going to I mean, he's gonna get really
- 13:26Speaker 1: into it because he's like, you know, everyone's just kissing
- 13:28Speaker 1: up to Jerry right this whole you know, I mean,
- 13:32Speaker 1: I've never seen a broadcaster like I've never seen a
- 13:35Speaker 1: situation like this with the broadcaster of you guys. Can
- 13:38Speaker 1: you say, I can't think of anything like this. I
- 13:41Speaker 1: don't know, I'm in a big city.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know the guy at all, but like
- 13:46Speaker 2: when you're going viral like that and awful and I
- 13:50Speaker 2: guess Hawk.
- 13:51Speaker 1: I guess was his own guy.
- 13:54Speaker 2: It was like his own was established and it was
- 13:57Speaker 2: like extreme Homerism that fans loved and embraced, right.
- 14:03Speaker 1: But remember he was gonna beat Remember he wanted to
- 14:05Speaker 1: beat up like Samarsha.
- 14:07Speaker 3: I don't remember that one. I remember that.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Because who was he lost his ship, like you can
- 14:15Speaker 1: find the video. He was gonna kick well, he was
- 14:17Speaker 1: gonna murder like smart, be funny because Marsa probably would
- 14:22Speaker 1: punch an old man.
- 14:24Speaker 4: He was a big Hawk fan. I feel like he
- 14:27Speaker 4: had said he had a quote like that, like oh yeah,
- 14:29Speaker 4: you know, growing up throw you know, you'd take a
- 14:33Speaker 4: nap as soon as Hawks starts sagging or something like that.
- 14:36Speaker 4: He had some sort of good quote like that.
- 14:37Speaker 1: He definitely got oh yeah. And then when when some
- 14:40Speaker 1: Marsha came over to the song talk loved him after
- 14:42Speaker 1: that of course, of course. Yeah, but yeah, no age,
- 14:46Speaker 1: I mean like, yeah, we need we need fam to
- 14:48Speaker 1: like punch a catcher. Yeah, that'd be nice to punch
- 14:52Speaker 1: someone would be great, you know, shriffing to like lose
- 14:57Speaker 1: a ship and like like a beer on hughes his
- 15:00Speaker 1: head or something. Watch with Coomer in the media or
- 15:10Speaker 1: like Zach say yell at Zach for laughing.
- 15:13Speaker 4: Maybe, uh, I think you know, I've never encountered Pedro Graffa.
- 15:18Speaker 1: I only know him through your coverage John.
- 15:21Speaker 4: And the writers, and definitely a Jim Boyle in character,
- 15:25Speaker 4: as you had said. And I do think Cub Socks
- 15:29Speaker 4: could draw more out of him. You know, maybe not
- 15:33Speaker 4: Lou Panela telling Steve Stone to go be a farm
- 15:36Speaker 4: director somewhere, but he'll be definitely be increased spotlight, a
- 15:40Speaker 4: little more pressure, and like you said, to win one
- 15:43Speaker 4: for Jerry, to bring the Crosstown Cup back home to
- 15:47Speaker 4: the South Side.
- 15:49Speaker 1: I think I think he's the one hobby out for
- 15:52Speaker 1: that is. I think Pedro's kind of realizing he screwed
- 15:55Speaker 1: up those quotes, and I think I wonder if he's
- 15:57Speaker 1: gonna be a little more careful, especially you know, if
- 16:00Speaker 1: someone like with the White Sox tells him to chill
- 16:04Speaker 1: out a little bit with this series, because you know,
- 16:06Speaker 1: like Sally Sally just went and like absolutely destroyed him
- 16:10Speaker 1: the other day and you know, referred to his uh
- 16:14Speaker 1: serial boot licking in a column. So like I wonder
- 16:18Speaker 1: if Page is gonna be on guard for that. But
- 16:20Speaker 1: maybe he can't help himself, right, like You're right, Like
- 16:22Speaker 1: he's gonna want to win it for Jerry so bad.
- 16:24Speaker 1: You know, he's so concerned about that. They're also concerned
- 16:27Speaker 1: about Jerry getting enough credit for being, you know, a
- 16:31Speaker 1: subpar owner. Yeah, that could be two. I mean we
- 16:36Speaker 1: got Ozzie will be there before the game. That's alway
- 16:38Speaker 1: nice his show, So we got that going maybe like yeah,
- 16:44Speaker 1: I mean you always hope for fireworks. I mean I've
- 16:46Speaker 1: been there for some fun stuff. I was, you know,
- 16:48Speaker 1: I was there for and I think you were two
- 16:49Speaker 1: moons when you know, Lou kicked out Milton Bradley and
- 16:53Speaker 1: Soenbrano in consecutive years from the from the White Sox.
- 16:57Speaker 1: I've never seen a manager kick out his own players
- 16:59Speaker 1: in back to back years like that. And I remember
- 17:02Speaker 1: asking Lou about it. I was a little nervous ask him,
- 17:04Speaker 1: you never know what he would say, and Lou just
- 17:06Speaker 1: I was like, is it something about this place? And
- 17:07Speaker 1: Lou just started laughing, like once you realized that it
- 17:10Speaker 1: happened back to back years, look cluck. Oh, I mean
- 17:16Speaker 1: that was that was great.
- 17:18Speaker 3: It's amazing how much stuff has happened in Cup sucks.
- 17:21Speaker 3: I mean, there's there's.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Been some great games, but the off the field, like
- 17:25Speaker 2: the non game, the.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Lou Steve Stone one was great because I was in
- 17:31Speaker 1: the dugout for that. Were there moons for that?
- 17:34Speaker 4: Yeah, it was something like like Chicago Tribune Live like
- 17:39Speaker 4: saying that like it was Tyler colvineah, Tyler Covin somewhere.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Yeah, he went off on it. And then I remember
- 17:48Speaker 1: after that, me and Sully I think, ran up to
- 17:50Speaker 1: write really quick off just what Lou said. And then
- 17:53Speaker 1: some other people got Stony in the club how the
- 17:55Speaker 1: visiting dugout. But then as I was going back down,
- 17:58Speaker 1: Stone was coming up. So I got him one on
- 17:59Speaker 1: one and then Stone is going off again on what
- 18:02Speaker 1: Steve said and like or what lose. Steve was going
- 18:05Speaker 1: off on what Lou said, and so I got to
- 18:06Speaker 1: put all that in the column. It was That was
- 18:09Speaker 1: a classic.
- 18:10Speaker 3: Did Stone fire back? I don't even remember.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Oh yeah he did.
- 18:13Speaker 3: I remember the loop part.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I got him I don't know if anyone else
- 18:17Speaker 1: really got him at length. I got him kind of
- 18:19Speaker 1: firing back at him a little bit, you know, because
- 18:22Speaker 1: he had already heard from the other from like Bruce
- 18:24Speaker 1: or someone like what what Lou had said. That was
- 18:28Speaker 1: great because that was the no damn dummy. Yeah, it
- 18:30Speaker 1: was nowhere.
- 18:32Speaker 3: It was.
- 18:33Speaker 4: It was like a Friday day game.
- 18:35Speaker 1: It was completely out of nowhere. It was like I
- 18:37Speaker 1: was just like asked him a question.
- 18:39Speaker 4: He went off, like the idea of Lou Panella not
- 18:43Speaker 4: playing young players or something like that, and like, but
- 18:46Speaker 4: I don't think this was like top of mind to
- 18:48Speaker 4: anyone in that visiting and then just goes off and
- 18:53Speaker 4: it's like probably like I don't know, ten thirty eleven
- 18:56Speaker 4: in the morning, like on if I remembering correctly, that's you're.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Right, and he just that was late before. That wasn't
- 19:03Speaker 1: before Lou retired. That wasn't long before you were tired.
- 19:07Speaker 1: I think it would have twenty twenty ten or twenty eleven. Yeah, no,
- 19:11Speaker 1: it was that year for sure, and it was like
- 19:13Speaker 1: a couple of weeks later for twenty ten.
- 19:14Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, ten is twenty retired right in like yeah,
- 19:18Speaker 4: mid season twenty ten, early part of the ten season
- 19:23Speaker 4: last Wow.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Just I mean, yeah, that's remarkable. I'm hoping for something similar.
- 19:30Speaker 2: We we need Council's not gonna go off. We know that,
- 19:33Speaker 2: like council. Council is the way to even killed. He
- 19:38Speaker 2: gives good quotes, but it's not like spicy quotes. There's
- 19:41Speaker 2: there's nothing this guy doesn't like the temperament is so
- 19:45Speaker 2: even keeled, it's we'll never get that. It's no Dale
- 19:49Speaker 2: Swain threatening to send down Starling Castro and Anthony Rizzo. Uh,
- 19:54Speaker 2: you know, after a month of struggles or whatever it was,
- 19:57Speaker 2: and in THEO being like, what the hell is happening
- 19:59Speaker 2: right now? So we need more more of that, I think.
- 20:03Speaker 2: So I'm hoping for Tripping or Griffole or fam to
- 20:08Speaker 2: go off. Just maybe someone random. Is there someone random
- 20:11Speaker 2: in that clubhouse that we can count on? I mean,
- 20:13Speaker 2: Robert's back, so maybe he'll just go off on the
- 20:15Speaker 2: field and it just sink this Cup season.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I can't think of anyone else. I don't. I
- 20:22Speaker 1: gotta be honest, I don't know the White Sox too well.
- 20:24Speaker 1: I'm not going to at this point in uh my career.
- 20:27Speaker 1: I'm not going I'm not going locker to lock or
- 20:30Speaker 1: shaking hands with some of these guys.
- 20:33Speaker 3: Underlying statistics of Paul how do.
- 20:36Speaker 1: You pronounce this? PAULA Young or Paul dejan or you young? Right,
- 20:41Speaker 1: Bruce Levine had a story, you know, in an interview
- 20:44Speaker 1: right transcripted story talking about He's basically just like, yeah,
- 20:47Speaker 1: I know I'm getting traded He's like, I just hope
- 20:50Speaker 1: they send me somewhere good and like, you know, they
- 20:52Speaker 1: get someone good back and and he was like, uh,
- 20:56Speaker 1: you know, he had a couple other like funny lines.
- 20:59Speaker 1: So yeah, me and Fam talk about it all the time.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Okay, I was gonna say, that's just like Fam kind
- 21:04Speaker 2: of like set himself up. I know, people like say, like,
- 21:07Speaker 2: why would you sign with the White Sox Like he
- 21:09Speaker 2: set himself up to Okay, I'm gonna be I'm gonna
- 21:12Speaker 2: have a good first half here for a good couple
- 21:14Speaker 2: of months, and then I'll definitely get traded to a contender.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Wit and and his tax hit is less right here
- 21:21Speaker 1: than in California, which is what literally also the funniest
- 21:25Speaker 1: thing of like why did you sign here? And he
- 21:28Speaker 1: literally said because the state taxes which are not yeah,
- 21:31Speaker 1: which no one's ever said I'm going to Illinois for
- 21:33Speaker 1: lower taxes but compared to California. Yeah, And that's just
- 21:39Speaker 1: FAM's great. Like I wish I talked to him. I
- 21:41Speaker 1: wish I like cared more to go to the White
- 21:43Speaker 1: Sox and talk to him more, because he's just a
- 21:45Speaker 1: content machine.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Yoh, I mean remember, I mean he's the one that
- 21:49Speaker 2: slapped Chock Peterson like Trent loves Trent.
- 21:52Speaker 3: Trent Rosencrans are our.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Colleague at the Athletic who covers the Reds and all
- 21:57Speaker 2: sorts of baseball stuff. Is like, talk to him about
- 22:02Speaker 2: about Fam and he he'll talk your ear off because.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Jesse and our friend Jesse Rodgers loves Fam. I mean
- 22:08Speaker 1: he's been talking to him forever, you know, covering him
- 22:10Speaker 1: when he does his national stuff. I mean, he's just great.
- 22:13Speaker 1: He's old. I love guys like that. I mean we
- 22:16Speaker 1: used to have guys like that with the Cubs. We
- 22:17Speaker 1: don't really have like Big Mouse anymore, do he? Is
- 22:20Speaker 1: there any guys in Big Mouse on the team anymore?
- 22:24Speaker 1: I mean they're.
- 22:26Speaker 5: Talking about it, not the yeah, like the you know
- 22:30Speaker 5: Reddy Well, Miguel Montero, Miguel Montero, big Z.
- 22:39Speaker 4: I mean, I think we'll see if the Cubs, you know,
- 22:42Speaker 4: how the season plays out. But I don't know when
- 22:45Speaker 4: you're looking at how well Fam performs on the field
- 22:48Speaker 4: and kind of that edge he brings, like the Cubs
- 22:50Speaker 4: don't turn it around, that's going to be a talking
- 22:53Speaker 4: play them. Hey, I know, maybe this mix you know
- 22:56Speaker 4: something like you know, no one cares about your process
- 23:00Speaker 4: or your expected stats, and when you have a new
- 23:04Speaker 4: manager who has very strong opinions and is very insightful
- 23:08Speaker 4: about how things should be run.
- 23:11Speaker 1: And then if this team kind of.
- 23:14Speaker 4: Does something similar to last year, and whether or not
- 23:17Speaker 4: it's a dramatic collapse at the end, or if they
- 23:20Speaker 4: squeak into the playoffs with eighty four, Like I don't
- 23:23Speaker 4: think it's an unreasonable conversation to have of Like I
- 23:27Speaker 4: don't know you can clone Tommy fam or like how
- 23:30Speaker 4: that works, but a presence like that, I don't know when,
- 23:35Speaker 4: at least when they're struggling, how you can point to
- 23:37Speaker 4: that'd be like and.
- 23:38Speaker 3: Wonder Patrick, I'm pretty sure you were.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Yeah, you had to have been there when when they
- 23:44Speaker 2: signed John Lackey, Like there wasn't much else that THEO
- 23:49Speaker 2: said other than we lack edge we need Yeah, like
- 23:53Speaker 2: they wanted John Lackey for that. Yes, he's one World Series,
- 23:56Speaker 2: he has experienced all those good things.
- 23:58Speaker 3: That was great.
- 23:59Speaker 2: That was you know, I'm sure one A, one B
- 24:02Speaker 2: was this guy gets pissed off and like we'll, you know,
- 24:06Speaker 2: get on his teammates if they're not doing what they're
- 24:09Speaker 2: supposed to do and piss off the opposition sometimes too,
- 24:12Speaker 2: and that that seems to you know, that's something that
- 24:15Speaker 2: they lacked and that they wanted on that team.
- 24:18Speaker 4: I mean, imagine Lackey's reaction, like if say I just
- 24:21Speaker 4: dropped a fly ball like that like this defense, he
- 24:25Speaker 4: would be so entertaining that I wish we could make
- 24:29Speaker 4: that happen. But like, yeah, people would say that, like
- 24:32Speaker 4: you know, our infielders or some of them were like
- 24:35Speaker 4: scared of Lackey and my Keith feel very much enjoyed that.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I would love to see Jed shake it up
- 24:44Speaker 1: with this team. It's kind of a kind of boring
- 24:47Speaker 1: club in some ways.
- 24:49Speaker 3: They were exciting for a couple of weeks there to start, but.
- 24:52Speaker 2: It was also not not realistic the way they were
- 24:55Speaker 2: importing in certain ways.
- 24:56Speaker 1: We got body body will say something?
- 24:59Speaker 3: Body?
- 25:00Speaker 1: When when will Body's been grained enough to start talking again.
- 25:02Speaker 2: He's a new man, Oh he is. But he's a
- 25:05Speaker 2: different person than he was he was like the old body.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Well, he's got a second chance, or whatever chance this is.
- 25:15Speaker 3: He's he's got another one. Uh, maybe maybe he'll.
- 25:18Speaker 2: Make Maybe he'll be the hero of the Cubs need
- 25:21Speaker 2: uh to defeat the White Sox if they need a
- 25:23Speaker 2: hero to defeat the White Sox.
- 25:25Speaker 3: I think that says a lot.
- 25:26Speaker 1: I had actually thought I had actually talked, you know,
- 25:28Speaker 1: because we've talked this before. But like I used to
- 25:30Speaker 1: work for Body's agents, Scott Bronstein, you know, I'm friends,
- 25:32Speaker 1: and I was like we were talking about I was like,
- 25:36Speaker 1: you should try to get Jed to trade Body to
- 25:38Speaker 1: the White Sox. They could use him.
- 25:40Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, is that a good thing? But you want
- 25:46Speaker 3: to be traded to the White Sox.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Well, it was when Body was like, I mean he
- 25:50Speaker 1: was marooned in Iowa, you know, like like he was
- 25:54Speaker 1: like I don't really understand, like how he's going to
- 25:56Speaker 1: get out of there, Like, yeah, they're off everyone except Body,
- 25:59Speaker 1: so like, yeah, I mean the White Sox technically the
- 26:02Speaker 1: major leagues.
- 26:06Speaker 2: I mean all it took was like months of every
- 26:08Speaker 2: other bench option struggling and just being like, Okay, I
- 26:13Speaker 2: need someone that can maybe put the ball in the
- 26:15Speaker 2: seats on occasion.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Yeah exactly. So we got Bodie back. Baby. I want
- 26:21Speaker 1: to see a Bodie jersey today.
- 26:23Speaker 2: I bet you'll see jose Valantine.
- 26:28Speaker 1: There's gonna be so muches. I like, how a J
- 26:35Speaker 1: highlights him on Twitter and you always do. Like if
- 26:39Speaker 1: you walk around a White Sox game, you'll see five
- 26:40Speaker 1: a js and like five Canaros.
- 26:43Speaker 3: Ever, what are the Cubs staples? Is Sosa staple much?
- 26:50Speaker 1: Because it's it's too old, you know what I mean?
- 26:52Speaker 1: Like Brian, you see a lot of Swanson's now, I've
- 26:59Speaker 1: seen some Morel's.
- 27:00Speaker 3: The other day I saw morel like outside, like out
- 27:02Speaker 3: in the wild, Like.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Okay, I didn't. I'm trying to think who else I've
- 27:06Speaker 1: seen lately. I did see a John Meylee one the
- 27:09Speaker 1: other day. Wow, nice Megan. It was the Dame Meghan
- 27:11Speaker 1: wrote or John Maylee story. I'm like, is that a
- 27:14Speaker 1: skid or something? Like? Who has a John Malee All
- 27:18Speaker 1: Star Jersey?
- 27:19Speaker 3: I think it's he has a son.
- 27:21Speaker 2: That's yeah, like he's playing, Yeah, he's he's playing in college.
- 27:25Speaker 4: He was, he was, he was at Mount Carmel and
- 27:28Speaker 4: it was like, you know, I thought he was definitely
- 27:31Speaker 4: a college recruit, maybe a draft type guy.
- 27:34Speaker 3: I think he got hurt. I'm not sure how badly,
- 27:36Speaker 3: but he got hurt.
- 27:37Speaker 1: I think all the twenty sixteen guys, the ones you see,
- 27:40Speaker 1: you will see some d Lea's occasionally, you know, like
- 27:44Speaker 1: at some SO says, but they're they're kind of too
- 27:46Speaker 1: old and like they just I don't think enough people
- 27:49Speaker 1: really have anymore. You do see a couple of no
- 27:51Speaker 1: Mars every game. I haven't seen my I haven't seen
- 27:53Speaker 1: a Terrio this year, which is disappointed Miles Away. Yeah, yeah,
- 28:00Speaker 1: why I called it the FUCU Dome terio theory that
- 28:03Speaker 1: there was always one at the game based on the PCUS,
- 28:07Speaker 1: the PCU joke about Gene Hackman and yeah it was
- 28:10Speaker 1: a ten Hackman and saw another actor.
- 28:16Speaker 4: H I just said one more for you, John, What
- 28:19Speaker 4: do you got on c h S and you and
- 28:22Speaker 4: our boys? Scott Powers wrote about.
- 28:24Speaker 1: That Chosen Sports Networks.
- 28:29Speaker 4: Yeah, it's gonna be very confusing. Where do you I
- 28:34Speaker 4: liked the press release because it was basically the exact
- 28:37Speaker 4: same quote that Crane Penny gave when they launched Marquee.
- 28:39Speaker 4: If we're doing this for our fans, we're gonna super
- 28:43Speaker 4: our fans, like as if the Cubs, as if the
- 28:46Speaker 4: White Sox, Blackhawks and Bulls like had not owned a
- 28:51Speaker 4: broadcast entity for essentially like twenty five to thirty forty years,
- 28:56Speaker 4: that they were like passively involved, Like no, they were,
- 28:59Speaker 4: they create did that, and so I'm just curious, like where,
- 29:02Speaker 4: I don't know, not a lot of time. You had
- 29:05Speaker 4: a really nice write up on it, Like what what
- 29:07Speaker 4: were your kind of takeaways?
- 29:09Speaker 1: Well, I mean we knew this is inevitable, and I
- 29:11Speaker 1: mean you worked it. You worked at Cable Town over there,
- 29:14Speaker 1: so you know. But like it was inevitable once the
- 29:17Speaker 1: Cubs left, and the fact that not just the Cubs leaving,
- 29:20Speaker 1: it's that because obviously those three are staying together, but
- 29:23Speaker 1: NBC wants out of the regional sports game. I mean
- 29:25Speaker 1: they've been deemphasizing it. They've been cutting costs there. You know,
- 29:29Speaker 1: for years, they've been you know, losing people. They have
- 29:31Speaker 1: no other real programming except the only programming they have
- 29:34Speaker 1: besides the games or and the post games or you know,
- 29:36Speaker 1: Bear's content, which they don't even have. Yeah, so like
- 29:40Speaker 1: you know, they have to have some Bear stuff to
- 29:41Speaker 1: get viewers. But like, yeah, it's been going this way
- 29:43Speaker 1: for a while, so we knew it. I would hope
- 29:45Speaker 1: that a lot of the people that work there are
- 29:47Speaker 1: going to are gonna catch on, you know. I guess
- 29:50Speaker 1: Marquee is gonna lose this their Stadium filler content I
- 29:54Speaker 1: would have. I mean I have to ask, but I
- 29:55Speaker 1: would assume that, right unless can they do both? I mean,
- 29:58Speaker 1: do we need do we really I need both to
- 30:01Speaker 1: be honest, you know. So yeah, it's give me a
- 30:05Speaker 1: new network. We'll see how they do with just getting it.
- 30:07Speaker 1: It's not really like a huge story till it's we
- 30:09Speaker 1: figure out if they can get on TV or not.
- 30:11Speaker 1: You know, just like with Marquee, happened to be during
- 30:14Speaker 1: the pandemic, so it was a little we had more
- 30:15Speaker 1: important things, you know, like the New Guys. Some guy
- 30:19Speaker 1: from Stadium is running at Jason Coyle. I've heard, you know,
- 30:23Speaker 1: some some mixed reviews on that, so we'll see how
- 30:27Speaker 1: that goes. But yeah, I mean if I'm if I'm
- 30:29Speaker 1: a ausie, I'm asking for that. Uh that Charles Barkley money,
- 30:34Speaker 1: you know, to jump aboard, although he wants told it.
- 30:37Speaker 1: I mean, we'll see. Just don't listen to Frank's advice
- 30:39Speaker 1: on money. That's like Ozzie's take. Frank Tellson hold out,
- 30:44Speaker 1: maybe don't do it.
- 30:47Speaker 3: But yeah, outstanding.
- 30:49Speaker 4: I got to give a shout out to its extremely
- 30:53Speaker 4: good and plugged in and like it's not easy the
- 30:56Speaker 4: job that he'd like Ozzie. You know, Ozzi is a legend,
- 30:59Speaker 4: you know, but like Chuck kind of like Ernie Johnson
- 31:02Speaker 4: does a really good job.
- 31:03Speaker 1: It was he really found his footing, you know, he
- 31:06Speaker 1: has so many things there, whether it's the sideline stuff
- 31:09Speaker 1: or the hosting or whatever reporting. He's really found his
- 31:13Speaker 1: footing on that show with Ozzie, and like, you're right,
- 31:16Speaker 1: it is like Ernie Johnson and the fact that they
- 31:18Speaker 1: can make fun of each other, like it's just it's
- 31:21Speaker 1: a lot like inside the NBA where they make fun
- 31:23Speaker 1: of each other. Like, so it's a good show. I
- 31:25Speaker 1: hope they make Chuck. I hope they do right by Chuck,
- 31:27Speaker 1: you're right and everyone else, you know. I hope they
- 31:30Speaker 1: bring some people back that they let go that were
- 31:32Speaker 1: really good on that station. Yeah, but we'll see if
- 31:35Speaker 1: they can get the you know, there's that over the
- 31:37Speaker 1: air stuff they're doing, but like that's people need stuff
- 31:41Speaker 1: on there. I mean, most people that are watching TV
- 31:43Speaker 1: and watching their cable package or so where they're going
- 31:45Speaker 1: to where they stream it through whatever service they use.
- 31:48Speaker 1: So that's that's really the key. Hopefully John Shipman they
- 31:52Speaker 1: hire him and give him some good money because he's
- 31:54Speaker 1: kind of runs their content. Now. Yeah, I mean I
- 32:00Speaker 1: think it like if you have to write something on
- 32:01Speaker 1: it because like you, I mean, you work their moon.
- 32:04Speaker 1: So it was a good crew of people. It They
- 32:07Speaker 1: didn't have an easy job all the time because there
- 32:09Speaker 1: were some teams that really meddled and like you know,
- 32:13Speaker 1: the stories I would hear about, like drin Blackhawks stuff
- 32:15Speaker 1: with like John McDonough yelling at people and like you know,
- 32:20Speaker 1: you had Crane fighting with probably Ryan. You know, like
- 32:22Speaker 1: there was a lot of weird stuff like they're fighting
- 32:25Speaker 1: on who you know, airtime and how much stuff each
- 32:27Speaker 1: team's getting and things like that. Like so it definitely
- 32:31Speaker 1: an interesting setup they had there with when they had
- 32:35Speaker 1: all four. But yeah, yeah, I don't know who's gonna
- 32:39Speaker 1: like all. I mean, the Blackhawks are a draw because
- 32:41Speaker 1: of Bdard and hockey fans, but like Bulls and White Socks,
- 32:46Speaker 1: I mean, it's just brutal product.
- 32:50Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that'll be for both the Cubs and
- 32:53Speaker 4: White Socks. I think that'd be a big story moving
- 32:55Speaker 4: forward of just how what that does for budgets and
- 32:59Speaker 4: the product and how they figure this out. And I
- 33:02Speaker 4: think as well beyond like you know their control, you know,
- 33:07Speaker 4: like changing viewer habits, and like what happens at the
- 33:11Speaker 4: league level with MLB and whether they could do like
- 33:14Speaker 4: a Cubs Netflix type thing without black Hawks and local restrictions.
- 33:18Speaker 4: And I think that's going to be like when there's
- 33:21Speaker 4: a lockout or a strike in a couple of years.
- 33:24Speaker 4: Like I think the TV stuff is going to be
- 33:25Speaker 4: a big part of I think teams are already thinking
- 33:28Speaker 4: in those terms.
- 33:30Speaker 1: Yeah, no, you're right, and like, yeah, we'll see how
- 33:33Speaker 1: what happens with the league wide, the way the leagues
- 33:34Speaker 1: run it, see if they run in the ground or not.
- 33:39Speaker 2: All right, Well, now we're getting depressing with lockout talk
- 33:41Speaker 2: and then journalism going into the tubes with everyone losing jobs.
- 33:46Speaker 3: So perfect time to wrap it up on a low
- 33:49Speaker 3: note there.
