Transcript
- 0:08Chapter 5. So we really went through quite a
- 0:11bit concerning how we as a church should care
- 0:15and to help manage and support the needs of the
- 0:19widow. And we clarified what the definition of
- 0:21a widow is. That's important. So as we finish,
- 0:25we're going to go through the last two verses
- 0:27of this chapter so we can really understand the
- 0:30rest of what God has to say. The rest of the
- 0:33chapter in verse 17 through 25 really deals with
- 0:37the main issue of the elder and the importance
- 0:40of the leadership of the elder. Now, first and
- 0:44foremost, there's some things I'm going to clarify
- 0:46in this chapter because I want you guys to make
- 0:49sure that you understand why Paul uses this term
- 0:53for some have already strayed after Satan, meaning
- 0:56adversary. So I'm going to clarify that and then
- 0:58we're going to move on, okay? So here we go.
- 1:00I'm going to start off in verse 8. It says, For
- 1:06his relatives, especially for members of his
- 1:09household, he has denied the faith and is worse
- 1:12than an unbeliever. Let a widow be enrolled if
- 1:15she is not less than 60 years of age, having
- 1:18been the wife of one husband and having a reputation
- 1:22for good works. If she has brought up children,
- 1:26has shown hospitality, has washed the feet of
- 1:29the saints, cared for the affliction or the afflicted,
- 1:33and has devoted herself to every good. work,
- 1:36but refuse to enroll younger widows for when
- 1:40their passions draw them away from Christ, they
- 1:43desire to marry and so incur condemnation for
- 1:47having abandoned their former faith. Beside that,
- 1:50they learn to be idlers going about from house
- 1:53to house and not only idlers, but also gossips
- 1:57and busybodies saying what they should not. So
- 2:00I would have younger widows marry, bear children,
- 2:04manage their households and give the adversary
- 2:06no occasion for slander, for some have already
- 2:09strayed after Satan. If any believing woman has
- 2:14relatives who are widows, let her care for them.
- 2:17Let the church not be burdened so that it may
- 2:21care for those who are truly widows. Let the
- 2:25elders who rule well be considered worthy of
- 2:28double honor, especially those who labor in preaching
- 2:31and teaching. For the scripture says, you shall
- 2:34not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain
- 2:37and the laborer deserves his wages. Do not admit
- 2:40a charge against. an elder, except on the evidence
- 2:44of two or three witnesses. As for those who persist
- 2:47in sin, In the presence of God and of Christ
- 2:54Jesus and of the elect angels, I charge you to
- 2:58keep these rules without prejudging, doing nothing
- 3:02from partiality. Do not be hasty in the laying
- 3:05on of hands, nor take part in the sins of others.
- 3:08Keep yourself pure. No longer drink only water.
- 3:13but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach
- 3:15and your frequent ailments. The sins of some
- 3:19people are conspicuous, going before them to
- 3:22judgment, but the sins of others appear later.
- 3:26So also good works are conspicuous, and even
- 3:30those who are not. cannot remain hidden. So you're
- 3:33like, why does Paul give Timothy this long verses
- 3:371 through 16 discussion and explanation of the
- 3:41importance of caring for the widows? And then
- 3:43he turns around and says, concerning you, concerning
- 3:46elders, this is the way it should be. I can't
- 3:48help but think about what it says in James chapter
- 3:511 verse 27. The religion that God considers pure
- 3:53and faultless exists to care for the orphans
- 3:55and widows in their distress and to keep oneself
- 3:57from being polluted by the world. What you see
- 4:00is the man who lives rightly, who's living a
- 4:03holy life, who's doing the work of God, don't
- 4:05hold him back from doing that. But you as an
- 4:08elder must live right. That's what this means.
- 4:11So I'm going to give you some clarity on some
- 4:13things here. First, let's go up to verse 15 to
- 4:1716 and we'll finish the widow. Continue from
- 4:20last week. Godly leaders manage the care of the
- 4:22widows and purpose to exhort them to cling to
- 4:26Christ. Father of the fatherless, protector of
- 4:29the widows is God in his holy habitation. We
- 4:32as the church and as elders have a responsibility
- 4:36to care and exhort those widows. To cling to
- 4:41Christ. Now, in verse 15, though, it says something
- 4:44quite interesting. For some have already strayed
- 4:47after Satan. Now, context means everything. I've
- 4:51talked quite a bit about this particular importance
- 4:55of hermeneutics and why we use scripture upon
- 4:58scripture and context upon context. And why would
- 5:01Paul, all of a sudden, in verse 14, say one thing
- 5:05concerning adversary and then turn around and
- 5:08use the term Satan? in verse 15. Very interesting.
- 5:12Contextually, here's what it means. So I would
- 5:15have younger widows marry and bear children and
- 5:18manage their households and give the adversary
- 5:20no occasion to slander. See, the adversaries
- 5:24of God love to slander. Why? Why do they slander?
- 5:29Why specifically these women? who have lost their
- 5:34husband, who have no children, who are young
- 5:37widows and have lost the man they love. Why?
- 5:40Well, because in context, when you go up to verse
- 5:4411, he explains to you why they should marry
- 5:48and why they should bear children, why they should
- 5:51manage their own households and learn to manage
- 5:53a household. It's because if they don't, they
- 5:56become busybodies. Look what it says in verse
- 5:5811. But refuse to enroll younger widows. For
- 6:02when their passions draw them away from Christ,
- 6:05they desire to marry and so incur condemnation
- 6:10for having abandoned the former faith. Look what
- 6:13it says in 13. Besides that, they learn to be
- 6:15idlers, going about from house to house, and
- 6:19not only idlers, but also gossips and busybodies,
- 6:22and saying, what they should not say. In other
- 6:25words, the point is, when they're busy doing
- 6:28the thing they're not supposed to be doing, if
- 6:30they're really not clinging to Christ, if they're
- 6:32finding a reason not to live a life as honoring
- 6:36to Christ and to unite with a godly man, they're
- 6:40just quick to marry anybody, they end up becoming
- 6:42gossips and busybodies, and so the adversaries
- 6:46have an occasion to slander them. You see, they'll
- 6:50say, see this girl, she goes to this church.
- 6:53And if this is what this church really teaches,
- 6:56is it a good church? That's the idea here. They're
- 6:59not living above reproach. And so they bring
- 7:02shame on the name of Christ. Now, when we see
- 7:05this and we understand in verse 15, for some
- 7:08have already strayed into adversary or after
- 7:13the adversary. Because the word satanas means
- 7:17adversary. So if he says, don't give the adversary
- 7:20an occasion. And then he turns around, but some
- 7:23of these women already have. That's what it means.
- 7:25Literally what it means. But we think because
- 7:28the word Satan's there and it's capital S, that
- 7:31it doesn't mean adversary. When in reality, the
- 7:34Greek is clear, satanas means adversary. So contextually,
- 7:39we know that women who do not honor God with
- 7:43their bodies, that are busy doing things they
- 7:45shouldn't do, that they've lost their husband
- 7:47and are finding a reason to live lasciviously.
- 7:50They bring slander upon the name of Christ and
- 7:53upon his church. How many of you guys have heard
- 7:55the term, hey, why don't you go to church? I
- 7:59got church hurt. It's the one thing I hate the
- 8:01most about this modern day of what we would call
- 8:04American church is this definition of church
- 8:07hurt. They probably receive more hurt from their
- 8:12personal family than they've ever received from
- 8:15a church. But it's the excuse. They got to blame
- 8:18somebody. If they can't blame the devil, They
- 8:20blame the church instead of blaming themselves.
- 8:25And so verse 16, if any believing woman has relatives
- 8:30who are widows, let her care for them. Why? If
- 8:34there's a woman who believes in Christ, who is
- 8:37in the church, who is capable, who has the ability
- 8:40to care, feed, support, train, walk alongside
- 8:44these women, they should. This is one of the
- 8:47important reasons why we are Continually striving
- 8:50for women in ministry. Man cannot effectively
- 8:55support women in women things. We're ineffective.
- 9:00If we were effective, God would have no need
- 9:03to give us a helper who is fit for us. He needed
- 9:08a helper. That is one of the amazing gifts of
- 9:11the woman to the man. We don't live life alone.
- 9:15We don't live life in a vacuum. We live together.
- 9:19And she finds her purpose in fulfilling who she
- 9:22is, the nurturer, the life giver. That is a woman,
- 9:27the life giver. So women, if we know we have
- 9:31women who need support as part of the body of
- 9:34Christ, come alongside them and help them, which
- 9:37we are doing. I can tell you that. Let the church
- 9:41not be burdened so that it may care for those
- 9:44who are truly widows. In other words, widows
- 9:47who cannot. They have no children. They're gone.
- 9:52They have no husband. They're gone. She is left
- 9:56alone after giving her entire life to good works
- 10:00and to care and to washing of feet. This woman,
- 10:04truly barren, truly without care and support,
- 10:07like a city with no inhabitants. Now we can move
- 10:11on to the next part of this chapter. So I hope
- 10:13you guys have a clear understanding of the importance
- 10:15of what we must do as a church for the widow.
- 10:19What you do for the least of these, you do for
- 10:21me. Lastly, this chapter, godly leaders must
- 10:24live consistently for all to see. Only let your
- 10:28manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ,
- 10:31so that whether I come to see you or am absent,
- 10:34I may hear of you that you are standing firm
- 10:38in one spirit, with one mind, striving side by
- 10:41side for the faith of the gospel. Philippians
- 10:431 .27. I use this because it's important to understand
- 10:47that we must live in a way that is worthy, live
- 10:51a life that is worthy of the gospel of Christ.
- 10:53As pastors and as elders, there is no greater
- 10:56calling. For any man, all men of God must live
- 11:02in this way. Now, look what it says in verse
- 11:0517. Let the elders who rule well be considered
- 11:09worthy of double honor, respect, and reverence.
- 11:13Now, many would say, you know, pastor, you know,
- 11:16you're going to be talking about like money and
- 11:18stuff here. Should you do that? Yes. I don't
- 11:21need your money. You guys take good care of me.
- 11:23This isn't the issue here. It's the attitude
- 11:25by which you care for your elders. And I want
- 11:28you to see that here. And as a church, we must
- 11:30live in such a way that we honor the elders,
- 11:33the pastors who care and oversee you. That's
- 11:37what he says here. Let the elders who rule, elders,
- 11:41you see that, who rule be considered worthy of
- 11:44double respect, double. especially those who
- 11:49exhaust themselves, who get to the point of weariness
- 11:54in preaching and teaching. Those men you must
- 11:58care, watch, be worthy of, double honor. Those
- 12:02men, not only your elders, but the men especially
- 12:05that exhaust themselves on your behalf in preaching
- 12:08and teaching. For the scripture says you shall
- 12:10not muzzle. You must not close the mouth of an
- 12:13ox when it treads out the grain. There's two
- 12:15reasons why you don't take the ox and shut his
- 12:19mouth while he's busy pulling and harvesting
- 12:22for you to eat. So this ox, he's out in the cornfields,
- 12:27and he's ripping the corn down so you guys can
- 12:29eat, and you muzzle him. One, close an ox mouth.
- 12:32When he's busy pulling, he gets tired faster.
- 12:34Don't hold the passer down. To the point that
- 12:37you muscle him because you'll exhaust him quicker.
- 12:39And you wonder why. Do you know what the average
- 12:41length of a pastor in a church is in America?
- 12:45Five years. Two reasons. The man doesn't know
- 12:48how to manage his time. And the church doesn't
- 12:50take good care of his pastor, of her pastor.
- 12:52And one of the things that's special about our
- 12:54church is you guys do take good care of me. And
- 12:57that's why in June, I'll be away for 30 days.
- 12:59I have my sabbatical coming. Every three years,
- 13:02I get 30 days. That was part of the discussion,
- 13:04and that was important. And Ben will tell you,
- 13:07do I have a choice? I do not have a choice. That's
- 13:10accountability, elder to elder. That's what we
- 13:12do. So you don't muzzle the ox. You know the
- 13:15second reason why you don't muzzle the ox? You
- 13:17know what the ox would do when he's busy pulling?
- 13:19He would eat whatever would drop. That would
- 13:21be his nourishment. He would work longer and
- 13:24have more energy to work because he's able to
- 13:27eat the corn that drops that they don't pick
- 13:30up. Isn't that interesting? You got to let the
- 13:33man work. Don't muzzle him. Let him get nourishment.
- 13:38Let him get good oxygen in him. Let him walk
- 13:41and work hard. Do all that you can to help support
- 13:44him so that he continues to pool. That's the
- 13:47idea. The second, it says, and the laborer deserves
- 13:51his wages. In other words, this word deserves
- 13:53is the understanding of equal in value. The man
- 13:56should not be paid more than he's worth. So I'm
- 13:59going to make this real clear. There should be
- 14:00no pastor getting paid a million dollars. It
- 14:04doesn't matter if he has 10 ,000 people in that
- 14:06church. It's impossible to pastor 10 ,000 people.
- 14:10You know what he does with 10 ,000 people? Stands
- 14:12behind the pulpit and preaches, and that's all
- 14:14he does. Because you can't pastor 10 ,000 people.
- 14:17Now, that being said, I've just offended all
- 14:20of the megachurch pastors. Don't care. I really
- 14:25don't. You better find something else to do,
- 14:28right? So here's the point. A man is equal to
- 14:33the value of his work. That's what he deserves.
- 14:35He deserves no more, and he deserves no less.
- 14:38If he gives you less, he's got to go. That's
- 14:41the point. If the man is giving you good word,
- 14:43he's preaching and teaching is really good, he's
- 14:46worthy double of the honor. If he's an elder
- 14:49of the church, like we have here, we have several
- 14:51elders, they are worthy of double honor. And
- 14:53you take care of the man that God has placed
- 14:56over you or the men that God has placed over
- 14:59you because it's the right thing to do. They're
- 15:01equal in value of the work they do. No more,
- 15:05no less. And this is what it says. Next, do not
- 15:10admit a charge against an elder except on the
- 15:13evidence of two or three witnesses. In other
- 15:15words, if you feel like an elder has done something
- 15:18wrong, do not charge him unless you have an absolute
- 15:23proof that he is guilty. Turn to Deuteronomy
- 15:26chapter 19, verse 15. And this is where this
- 15:29comes from. A single witness shall not suffice
- 15:33against a person for any crime. Do you hear that?
- 15:36In Deuteronomy, it says, If someone comes to
- 15:40you concerning an individual, a judge, concerning
- 15:44an individual, and he comes alone, not good enough.
- 15:47I wonder what our legal system would look like
- 15:49if we actually had witnesses, real true witnesses.
- 15:53Too many men, too many women have been accused
- 15:56of a crime based on a witness. One person, not
- 16:00two or three. So it says, a single witness shall
- 16:03not suffice against a person for any crime. or
- 16:07for any wrong in connection with any offense
- 16:11that he has committed. Do you see that? This
- 16:14is God's law. This isn't man's law. God says
- 16:18this is the way it should be. As a matter of
- 16:19fact, our Constitution would call that circumstantial
- 16:22evidence. Only on the evidence of two or three
- 16:25witnesses shall a charge be established. So can
- 16:28you imagine if you're a pastor and somebody just
- 16:31doesn't like you? They come to the elders and
- 16:34they say something about that pastor. And all
- 16:37of a sudden, a whole entire church split happens
- 16:39over an accusation of one man or one woman. Not
- 16:43sufficient here. Biblically, the eldership should
- 16:45say, do you have another witness? No, then we
- 16:49can't help you. If there is a wrong, then you
- 16:51need proof. And if you have proof, then you need
- 16:53to show that proof. That's important. Why? It
- 16:57protects the church from false accusations. That's
- 17:02the point. Not saying that that person didn't
- 17:04do something wrong, but it protects the church.
- 17:07That's the point. Look what it says next, though.
- 17:10Notice right after he says this, in verse 20,
- 17:13he says something that's quite remarkable. He
- 17:15says, as for those who persist in sin, rebuke
- 17:18them in the presence of all so that the rest
- 17:21may stand in fear. It's not like this pastor
- 17:24or elder hasn't done something wrong. Because
- 17:27what we end up reading at the end of the chapter,
- 17:30verse 24, is the sins of some people are conspicuous,
- 17:34going before them to judgment. The sin will come
- 17:38out, and you will be vindicated. Just do it the
- 17:42right way to protect the church. Now, that being
- 17:45said, let's keep reading. So if this person persists,
- 17:49continues to live in sin, rebuke them in the
- 17:52presence of everyone, in the presence of all,
- 17:54so that the rest... of the congregation may stand
- 17:58in fear, especially the elders. No elder is above
- 18:02God's word. You've heard this. No one is above
- 18:05the law. Now, in the presence of God and of Christ
- 18:10Jesus and of the elect messengers, that word
- 18:13is angels, I charge you to keep these rules without
- 18:18prejudging. Do nothing from partiality. In other
- 18:21words, you, Timothy, must keep these rules. with
- 18:25no partiality, and not presuming something that's
- 18:30not there. So in the same way that someone must
- 18:33come if they're going to bring a charge against
- 18:36an elder, must have two or three witnesses, you,
- 18:38Timothy, must not use these rules in a way that
- 18:43would bring judgment or prejudgment upon someone
- 18:46because you have favoritism over another. This
- 18:50happens a lot in churches. Why? Because there
- 18:53are pastors who will build up a consensus. That's
- 18:57why churches run with deacon boards instead of
- 19:00elderships. Deacons run the house. Why? Because
- 19:02the senior pastor can manipulate and control,
- 19:05since he's the one of authority, over the deacons.
- 19:08But if he has elders, men that he is equal to
- 19:11in authority, differ in responsibility, he doesn't
- 19:14like that. You see, there's something very important.
- 19:17There's a reason why. It's because God's economy
- 19:19is not a democracy. God's economy... is a theocracy.
- 19:23He chooses who will lead, and he puts them there.
- 19:26That's a theocracy. Interesting. What's the most
- 19:28common word we use today? Every nation wants
- 19:31to be a democracy. Do you know what the last
- 19:36empire was who added democracy? Do you guys know?
- 19:40Called Rome. Rome was the last true democracy.
- 19:44And what happened to Rome? It went away. Oh,
- 19:47no, it did not. Rome looked like it had a lethal
- 19:49death shot. But Rome is alive and well today
- 19:53in the democracy of the world. Rome is risen.
- 19:58And if you don't think it's risen, just look
- 20:00at Ukraine and all of the other nations that
- 20:03are becoming democracies. Democracies are rule
- 20:06without God. Man rules man. God has no rule.
- 20:10I hope you see that. It's a little clue for you
- 20:13Revelation people who are going through Revelation
- 20:15with me. Rome is alive. The head that was wounded
- 20:19is busy. This day. That being said, why should
- 20:23we be careful? Because we represent a king. And
- 20:28that king has placed upon us as stewards. What's
- 20:33the word I want to look for? A governorship.
- 20:35We have the responsibility to answer to the king
- 20:38for the care and the provision and the protection
- 20:42of his people. We do what the king says. We don't
- 20:45do what we think is best. God tells us what is
- 20:48best. And in doing so, he says this, verse 22,
- 20:52do not be hasty in laying on of hands, nor take
- 20:56part in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure.
- 21:00Again, as men of God, we are to be different.
- 21:05We must live consistently, not perfectly, because
- 21:09we are going to fail consistently. Our striving
- 21:13is to be perfect because he is perfect. We strive
- 21:16to be holy because he is holy. But either way,
- 21:19we must purpose to keep ourselves pure. In other
- 21:23words, we don't defile ourselves with things
- 21:25that we know defile. And we don't be hasty laying
- 21:29hands on those and giving them authority by which
- 21:32they haven't suffered long enough. What do I
- 21:34mean by suffer? They haven't put the time in
- 21:37and the work. They haven't struggled. We have
- 21:39too many pastors that want the notoriety of being
- 21:41a pastor, but they don't want the work to put
- 21:43in. It's interesting. That's what Paul's dealing
- 21:47with here. You know what pastors want today?
- 21:48They want Harleys parked on the stage or fast
- 21:52cars and tell you stories about how wonderful
- 21:55you are and that God has made you awesome. When
- 21:59in reality, we should be striving and driving
- 22:02God's people to be holy, to live and honor him
- 22:05in everything we do. To understand the stewardship
- 22:08by which God has given us as elders to care and
- 22:11walk alongside the hurting. So, verse 24, the
- 22:15sins of some people are conspicuous. The word
- 22:17conspicuous means to be openly evident. The sins
- 22:21of some people are openly evident, going before
- 22:23them to judgment. But the sins of others appear
- 22:26later. They come as they walk. They follow after
- 22:30them. What's that saying? Your sin will find
- 22:33you out. And so, verse 25, so also good works
- 22:39are conspicuous. They're openly evident. And
- 22:42even those that are not cannot remain unhidden.
- 22:46Even the good works that God's people do will
- 22:48eventually be out for everyone to see. Why? Because
- 22:51God will get the glory. God doesn't need our
- 22:55glory as we read. God receives glory because
- 22:58he is glorious. That being said, here's the last
- 23:00statement I'm going to give to the elders, to
- 23:03pastors. I know they feel uncomfortable with
- 23:06that term, but that's what they are. And also
- 23:07to the men being the pastor of your house. I
- 23:10think we can use this principally as fathers.
- 23:14And I want you to understand that, even though
- 23:16this is talking specifically about overseers.
- 23:18In principle, as fathers, you can apply these
- 23:21things to you too. Therefore, I testify, Acts
- 23:2420, 26 through 31. Therefore, I testify to you
- 23:28this day that I am innocent of the blood of all.
- 23:30Paul's saying this. For I did not shrink from
- 23:32declaring to you the whole counsel of God. The
- 23:35whole counsel. I don't get the choice of what
- 23:38I preach or, well, let me say it this way. I
- 23:42get the choice of preaching what book I think
- 23:44we could preach or talk about. I don't get the
- 23:47choice of how God determines and demands and
- 23:50commands for me to teach it. I either teach the
- 23:53whole thing or I shouldn't teach. That's the
- 23:55idea. I don't shrink. From declaring to you the
- 23:59whole counsel of God, Paul says. And neither
- 24:01should we as pastors. If you're shrinking to
- 24:04declare the whole counsel of God, then you shouldn't
- 24:07be a pastor. Pay careful attention to yourselves
- 24:09and to all the flock. Pay attention. Watch. Keep
- 24:14an eye out for yourself. That you're not pulled
- 24:17away. And to the entire flock that God has entrusted
- 24:21to you. In which the Holy Spirit has made you
- 24:24overseer. Don't want you to hear that. Pastors
- 24:27don't choose to be pastors. Pastors are called
- 24:30to be pastors. It is a God -given call to be
- 24:34an elder. The Holy Spirit has made you the overseer
- 24:38to care for the church of God. Church, assembly,
- 24:42assembly, family. God has made you the caregiver
- 24:47of his family. Not yours, his. You just happen
- 24:52to be a part of that family. And he's giving
- 24:54you now the responsibility of stewarding that
- 24:57family. Do you hear that, dads? Now, look what
- 25:00it says next. Holy Spirit made you overseers
- 25:03to care for the church of God, which he, Christ,
- 25:06obtained with his own blood. The payment for
- 25:10the church is his life. That's the idea here.
- 25:14Now do you see why Paul tells Timothy these things
- 25:17in chapter 5? We belong to the family. The family
- 25:21does not belong to me. I am part of that family.
- 25:25It's God's. He paid for her. I know that after
- 25:29my departure, fierce wolves will come in among
- 25:31you. Now we know why he says, pay careful attention
- 25:34to all the flock and to yourself, because there
- 25:36will be wolves that will come in and will not
- 25:39spare the flock. I know this because our church
- 25:42has gone through a couple of those guys many
- 25:44years ago, and God in his goodness and faithfulness
- 25:48has kept her. Lord knows I've heard some stories.
- 25:54And you'll be honest with you, if it wasn't for
- 25:56the men that God had given before the Lord has
- 25:58called me and my family here, you should praise
- 26:00God for those men. They took good care of you,
- 26:03good care of the church. Good job, Ben. That
- 26:06being said, look at what else it says. And from
- 26:08among you, from among your own selves will rise
- 26:12men speaking twisted things. There will be men
- 26:15who will come in as if they're believers and
- 26:18they will say some crazy things. They won't tell
- 26:21you, hey. You should read this scripture. You
- 26:24don't bend it all kinds of ways. You must spend
- 26:28time in the word. You must seek the truth of
- 26:33God's word. Why will they come in speaking twisted
- 26:36things? Because they would want to draw men away,
- 26:40the disciples after them. They want to make followers.
- 26:43They want to split the church to create their
- 26:46own little gathering. Now, it also says this.
- 26:51Therefore, be alert. As pastors, as elders, we
- 26:54must be alert, remembering that for three years
- 26:57I did not cease day and night to admonish everyone
- 27:00with tears. As elders, as pastors, we want to
- 27:04admonish you. That should be one of our greatest
- 27:07desires is to build you up in Jesus. We must
- 27:11teach the full counsel of God's word. We must
- 27:13pay careful attention to ourselves and the flock.
- 27:16Be overseers. As we care for the church, we must
- 27:20know that there will be people that will come
- 27:23in and we must pay attention. And we must make
- 27:26sure that even the men that are among us live
- 27:28rightly, not to deceive or teach things that
- 27:32are twisted to pull men away. The responsibility
- 27:35of godly leadership is to hold to the full truth
- 27:38of the word of God. So when you read the end
- 27:40of chapter 5, you understand why Paul writes
- 27:43this to Timothy. It is not a simple task to be
- 27:46a man of God to lead God's people, nor is it
- 27:49a simple task to be a father to lead the small
- 27:52flock that God has given you. So next week, Joe
- 27:55Cavanaugh, Karina, will be coming to share. My
- 27:59son is having his installation service, and I've
- 28:02been given the privilege to give him the pastoral
- 28:04charge as he is installed as an elder and officially
- 28:07an ordained pastor at his church. So I'm excited
- 28:10about that. I will be back. The 30th, by which
- 28:13we will start chapter 6. And excited about that.
- 28:17And then 6th, we'll move into, hopefully, move
- 28:21into 2 Timothy chapter 1. So we're going to be
- 28:25going through the apostolic letters probably
- 28:28for the next year or so into next year. So 2
- 28:32Timothy, Titus, 1 Peter, 2 Peter, 1 John, 2 John,
- 28:353 John. That's our goal. Okay? These letters
- 28:39are written specifically in a way that not only
- 28:41as Christians we should live, but as men and
- 28:44women we should live. And that's why we're doing
- 28:45it. Biblical manhood, biblical womanhood. Okay?
- 28:49All right. Father, I want to thank you so much
- 28:51for your goodness and faithfulness. Thank you,
- 28:52Lord, for your word. To you be honor and glory
- 28:55forever. You are king and you are the head of
- 28:59the church and we are thankful to be your people
- 29:02as stewards and as shepherds and overseers of
- 29:06your people. Help us to be good stewards, to
- 29:09be wise, and to live rightly for your glory and
- 29:11honor. In Jesus' name, amen.
