- 0:02Matthew chapter 16. Let us pray, Lord.
- 0:09God, I pray in the name of Jesus that you'll help us.
- 0:12Lord, I pray that today will be the turning point for so many.
- 0:15Lord, I pray that you'll indwell us from on high.
- 0:18Father, I pray healing. God, I pray restoration over
- 0:21marriages. I pray God that the prodigals
- 0:24will come home. Lord, I pray that we'll quit
- 0:26playing games with you, Father, and we'll get serious about
- 0:29following hard after you. Lord, we'll lay down all of our
- 0:32selfishness. God, we'll lay down all of our
- 0:35ideas of how this life should go.
- 0:36And Lord, we'll take up our cross.
- 0:38Lord, we'll lock eyes with you. We'll put our hand to the plow,
- 0:42Father, and we'll press forward. God, we'll charge the hill.
- 0:44Lord, I pray that you'll help us to put on the full armor today.
- 0:48Lord, let us go out to the ends of the earth.
- 0:50Let us go out to our neighborhoods.
- 0:52Let us talk about you with our children and our family and our
- 0:55neighbors. God, in our workplaces.
- 0:58Lord, we laid down down fear of man.
- 1:01God in the name of Jesus help us.
- 1:03Lord, I pray that the Holy Spirit will teach us today.
- 1:06I get out of the way. Lord, I decrease as you
- 1:09increase. It's all about you King Jesus we
- 1:11love you. Teach us your ways in Jesus name
- 1:14I pray, Amen. Let's start in verse 1.
- 1:21The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came and tempting
- 1:26desired him that he would show them a sign from heaven.
- 1:29So this was a despicable request that these Pharisees and
- 1:35Sadducees who had joined forces here you can see that they were
- 1:40two different religious sides of the coin and both of them were
- 1:44wrong. The Pharisees held on to all
- 1:47kinds of traditions and all kinds of legalism.
- 1:50And you can see that the Sadducees had it wrong because
- 1:54they didn't even believe in angels.
- 1:55They didn't believe in the resurrection and they they were
- 2:00more of the nobility. They were the the ones who
- 2:04financially had more ground to stand on and they just liked to
- 2:09sprinkle God into their abundant life.
- 2:12And you can see them joining forces here.
- 2:14These were two diametrically opposed entities and they came
- 2:19together to try to trap Jesus, but they're trying to trap the
- 2:24Son of God. They're trying to trap God
- 2:26himself Incarnate. And here you can see how Jesus
- 2:31treats them. Let's see what he has to say in
- 2:33verse 2. He answered and said unto them,
- 2:35when it is evening, you say it will be fair weather, for the
- 2:38sky is red. So he's going to use the very
- 2:41forces that he created, the wind and the waves and the weather,
- 2:45and he's going to show them just how hypocritical they are. 3 And
- 2:49in the morning, it will be foul weather today, for the sky is
- 2:52red and lowering. Oh, you hypocrites, you can
- 2:55discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of
- 2:59the times. He's saying wake up.
- 3:01He's saying look around. He's saying that heaven has come
- 3:04to earth. He's saying that God is here
- 3:07Incarnate. He's saying that you've been
- 3:09waiting on this moment. You've been waiting on the
- 3:11Messiah and the Messiah is here and you are missing it because
- 3:14you are so completely hard hardened.
- 3:17And I want you to know, friends, it's no different.
- 3:20And our day and our hour. There are so many people who
- 3:22have made a love decision for this world and they like the
- 3:25idea of Jesus, They like the idea of church.
- 3:28They like the idea of religion, but they do not care truly for
- 3:32the words of God and they don't actually digest and they don't
- 3:35actually get into them and they don't actually want to know all
- 3:38about them. They just want to know just
- 3:40enough where they don't have to go to hell.
- 3:42And we've got to get out of this idea that we want to escape
- 3:45hell. We have to get into the idea
- 3:47that we're going to fall in love with Jesus.
- 3:49We're going to fall in love with His words.
- 3:51We're going to fall in love with Him.
- 3:53We're going to seek His face. Daily.
- 3:55I pray in the name of Jesus that you have made a love decision
- 3:58for God, no matter what it cost you, if it costs you your life,
- 4:01if it costs you your job, no matter what it costs you, we
- 4:05have to make a love decision for the Lord God Almighty.
- 4:08He is worth it and you'll never regret it.
- 4:11And they refuse to, for a wicked and adulterous generation seeks
- 4:16after a sign, but there shall no sign be given unto it, but the
- 4:20sign of the prophet Jonah. So Jonah came, and he came for
- 4:24the Gentiles. You saw it whenever he was in
- 4:26Nineveh, and so did Jesus. Jesus not only came for the
- 4:30Jews, but He came for you, friend.
- 4:31He came for me, friend. Praise God that God so loved the
- 4:34world that He gave His only begotten Son.
- 4:37And no sign will be given to it but the three days that Jonah
- 4:41was in the belly of the fish. And we see that for three days
- 4:44the Son of Man was in the belly of the earth, and but he
- 4:47resurrected and he ascended to the right hand of God.
- 4:50Praise God. And he says in five.
- 4:52And when his disciples were come to the other side, they
- 4:55forgotten to take bread. OK, here we are.
- 4:58So whatever happened to all those baskets of bread?
- 5:01Perhaps they were generous along the way.
- 5:03Perhaps they tried to lighten the load.
- 5:05But let's see what Jesus has to say. 6 And Jesus said unto them,
- 5:08Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the
- 5:12Sadducees. So we can see here that Jesus is
- 5:15not talking about literal bread. He's talking about some
- 5:18spiritual things. He's talking about the false
- 5:22teachers, He's talking about the wolves, the ravenous wolves in
- 5:26sheep's clothing. It's no different in our day and
- 5:30our hour, friends. 7 And they reasoned among themselves,
- 5:33saying, It is because we have not taken any bread. 8 Which
- 5:38when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O you of little
- 5:41faith, why do you reason among yourselves?
- 5:44Because you have brought no bread?
- 5:46He's saying, Are you still stuck in the little faith syndrome?
- 5:51Yes, little faith is better than no faith, but we need abundant
- 5:55faith, friends. Faith is the currency that we
- 5:58operate out of. It is not the spirit of mammon,
- 6:02It is not in our finances. We do not please God by how much
- 6:08we give. We please God with faith.
- 6:12It is impossible to please him without faith, friends, and this
- 6:16is what Jesus is saying to his disciples.
- 6:18You need to increase your faith and get your eyes off of all the
- 6:22physical things. And we need to have our minds
- 6:25hyper fixated upon the spiritual that's all around us that is
- 6:29more real than the very bodies that we live in.
- 6:33The spiritual realm is forever and ever and ever.
- 6:36And this is temporal, friends. And Jesus is calling us to
- 6:42increase our faith. 9 Do you not yet understand?
- 6:47Neither remember the five loaves of the 5000, how many baskets
- 6:51you took up? 10 Neither the seven loaves of
- 6:54the 4000, how many baskets you took up?
- 6:5611 How is it that you do not understand that I speak it not
- 7:02to you concerning bread, but that you should be aware of the
- 7:05leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees?
- 7:08So he makes it as plain as humanly possible.
- 7:11He's telling them. He's saying, look friends, there
- 7:14will be many who come who try to say that they represent me, but
- 7:19they are only after your money. They are only after
- 7:25manipulation. They are only after power and
- 7:27greed. And he's saying beware.
- 7:30And it's no different in our day and our our friends.
- 7:33There are many who have intermingled themselves into the
- 7:37church. There are many unbelievers who
- 7:40are only after selfish gain. It's no different and we need to
- 7:44be aware of them them. 12 then understood they how that he bade
- 7:51them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of
- 7:55the Pharisees and the Sadducees. He makes it as plain as
- 7:58possible. He says beware.
- 8:01There is sin that creeps in that looks small in the beginning,
- 8:05but just like yeast, what does it do?
- 8:08It puffs us up. What does it do?
- 8:10It completely moves it its way throughout the whole batch,
- 8:15hidden until it's too late. 13 And when Jesus came unto the
- 8:20coast of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying,
- 8:24Whom do men say that I, the Son of Man, AM?
- 8:27So he's using this very Pagan backdrop to ask his disciples.
- 8:32He's gone into a place where they were practicing idolatry.
- 8:36And he's saying, Who do the people say that?
- 8:38I am 14? And they say, some say that
- 8:43you're John the Baptist, some Elijah, others Jeremiah, one of
- 8:48the prophets. And it's no different in our day
- 8:50and our hour. So many people like to liken
- 8:53Jesus to just a good man who had a lot of good sayings, and they
- 8:57just see him as a prophet along the way.
- 9:00But until we recognize him as God, until we recognize Jesus
- 9:07Christ as God, we're missing the mark.
- 9:11Friends, Jesus is Lord, He is the Godhead in bodily form, and
- 9:21no one can even look upon God, but we can see Jesus with our
- 9:27eyes, and we're indwelled by the Holy Spirit.
- 9:30Praise the Lord. So he's going to ask them. 15 He
- 9:34said unto them, But who do you say that I am?
- 9:40And that is a question we need to ask ourselves, friends.
- 9:43It is not just what does the world say?
- 9:45We cannot just get on what everybody else is doing.
- 9:50We need to have our own personal relationship with Jesus Christ,
- 9:59apart from what Grandma said, apart from what Grandpa said,
- 10:02apart from what preacher says, apart from what the world says.
- 10:06We need to ask ourselves who is Jesus Christ?
- 10:13And the really quick answer is he is the Son of God and we need
- 10:18to know that. 16 Simon Peter answered and said, you are the
- 10:25Christ, the Son of the living God.
- 10:27We've got to get to that revelation, friends.
- 10:29We need to understand that Jesus is Lord, Jesus is God.
- 10:36And until we do, we are just kicking the tires of
- 10:40Christianity trying to figure out if it fits into our own
- 10:44ideas of how we want this life to go. 17 And Jesus answered and
- 10:51said unto him, Bless it, are you, Simon Bard, Jonah, for
- 10:55flesh and blood has not revealed it unto you, but my Father,
- 10:59which is in heaven. And that is the that is the
- 11:02marker here, friends, that God has to draw you unto himself.
- 11:05God has to reveal to you, but you need to break up the fallow
- 11:09ground. Friends, there is a response
- 11:11ability upon us to make sure that we have not hardened our
- 11:16hearts, to make sure that we are receptive to the voice of God,
- 11:20to make sure that we do not blasphemy the Holy Spirit when
- 11:24He's drawing us unto the Lord God.
- 11:27But we need to make sure that as the Holy Spirit does His work in
- 11:32our lives, that we, friends, are allowing that still small voice
- 11:38to speak unto us and it will reveal to us the eternal truths
- 11:43that Jesus is Lord. And he said, Bless it are you 18
- 11:48And I say unto you, that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will
- 11:53build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail
- 11:56against it. So here is the first mention of
- 11:59ecclesia, the called out ones. Here's the first mention of the
- 12:04church at large. You friend, it's not a building.
- 12:08The church is not somewhere that we just go.
- 12:11The church is the the body of Christ and the gates of hell
- 12:15will never prevail, even if there's a foreclosure sign out
- 12:19on the front of the church. Satan has not won and he will
- 12:23not win and Jesus will crush his head and we will prevail all the
- 12:29way to the end. Friends, the church will remain
- 12:35and the blood of the the martyr is the seed of the gospel and we
- 12:39will go underground and we cannot be stopped.
- 12:44The church is relentless. Whenever you finally make a love
- 12:48decision for Jesus Christ, there is nothing that man can do.
- 12:52Do not fear the one that can take your life away, but fear
- 12:55the one that can take your life and your soul away in hell.
- 12:59And you can see that the church will always rise up.
- 13:04The church will never be able to be stopped.
- 13:07Friends, you can see this special name given unto Simon
- 13:16Barjona. You could see him being called
- 13:18Petra. You can see him called Peter.
- 13:20You could see this what a beautiful verse this is. 19 And
- 13:25I will give unto you the keys of the Kingdom of heaven, and
- 13:28whatsoever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven,
- 13:32and whatsoever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in
- 13:34heaven. We can see that we have the
- 13:36power that Jesus has given us the power and and by the way,
- 13:42Peter was just a bond servant unto Jesus Christ.
- 13:46Go check his epistles. Go look that he there's nothing
- 13:49special about Peter, friends. Peter was given the special
- 13:59privilege of preaching at Pentecost and thousands being
- 14:04saved, and that was the start there.
- 14:08And here Jesus is just referencing that point and he's
- 14:12showing Peter that he's going to have the privilege of ushering
- 14:19in the church and we'll remember that day.
- 14:22But by and large, Peter does not stand at the gates allowing
- 14:28people in and out. That is heretical.
- 14:30Friends, we need to know that Peter was just a man.
- 14:34And it's a lot like Mary how we try to deify these humans and
- 14:39it's never the intention of God. Peter was a blood bought, born
- 14:45again bondservant of the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 14:52We can see the power that we have on this earth that when we
- 14:56start praying God's will. That is whenever you see things
- 15:00happen and that is what is referenced to this binding and
- 15:03losing. Whenever we start getting in
- 15:05line with God's will, that's when you see things move.
- 15:09That's when you see the mountains move and the sea part
- 15:12is whenever we get in tune with God's will.
- 15:15Friends 20 And they then charged he, his disciples, that they
- 15:21should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ not yet,
- 15:27because the church had not arrived on the scene yet. 21
- 15:33From that time forth began Jesus to show unto his disciples how
- 15:37that he must go unto Jerusalem and suffer many things of the
- 15:40elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and
- 15:43raised again on the third day. He could not have made it more
- 15:47plain. Friends, He tells them exactly
- 15:50what is about to happen. And here he just said, Be
- 15:53careful not to tell anybody. And we would do well to study
- 15:56the Scriptures and to completely understand that we have a bird's
- 16:01eye view. Where?
- 16:02Where in the we're over top of the trees.
- 16:04They were down on the trail. And yes, it would look as if,
- 16:08hey guys, how did you miss it? But I wouldn't be surprised if
- 16:11you and I were there at this time, that we would be no
- 16:14different. He tells them exactly what is to
- 16:18happen. 22 Then Peter took him and began to rebuke him, saying,
- 16:24Be it far from you, Lord, this shall not be unto you. 22 What a
- 16:29verse. So here Peter had just got the
- 16:33special privilege of being called Peter and here he says
- 16:36That son of that he's the Son of God that Peter acknowledges
- 16:42Jesus as the Son of God. And here you get to see in the
- 16:46previous verses that Peter is the rock and hit.
- 16:54Jesus was giving him so much of a special name.
- 17:00And then all of a sudden, out of nowhere, as Jesus flows in to
- 17:07prophecy of what is to come, Peter is blinded by the devil.
- 17:13And it's no different for us, friends.
- 17:16So many times we receive these spiritual truths and then we
- 17:20walk away from it and we forget what was just said.
- 17:26There's a sin of forgetfulness. And here Peter is being blinded
- 17:30and he takes Jesus. Can you imagine Peter taking
- 17:34Jesus aside and rebuking him? Peter rebuking Jesus?
- 17:41What a thought. And he says this shall not be.
- 17:45Can you imagine Peter trying to tell Jesus, no, what you just
- 17:51said I will not allow to happen? 23 But he turned, and he said to
- 17:58Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan, for you are an offense
- 18:02unto me. For you savorous not the things
- 18:06that be of God, but those that be of man.
- 18:09He's saying you're not thinking of heavenly things, you're only
- 18:12thinking of earthly things. You're walking in your
- 18:15selfishness of only what you want.
- 18:18You think that you know best, but you're not thinking of the
- 18:21mind of God. You're not thinking of the
- 18:23Scriptures being fulfilled. And he sees this, Satan has
- 18:27blinded him. 24 And then Jesus said unto his disciples, If any
- 18:34man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his
- 18:38cross, and follow me. This would have been horrific in
- 18:41the minds of those Jews at that time, that that Jesus would say
- 18:46to take up your cross, you and I.
- 18:48We think of a cross as being on a necklace or being on a
- 18:52steeple, being a sign of of our comfort when we hold it in our
- 18:58hands and we think of Jesus. But during this day, this would
- 19:03have been likened to the gas chamber.
- 19:08This would have been likened to the electric chair.
- 19:10This would have been likened to intravenous killing.
- 19:16And here the they would have got the context way better than you
- 19:22and I. When he says, take up your cross
- 19:25and follow me, it meant certain death. 25 For whosoever will
- 19:32save his life shall lose it, and whosoever shall lose his life
- 19:36for my sake shall find it. And what a promise that we do
- 19:40not need to try to hold on to our life here, that we need to
- 19:43be able to give up and spill out our life for others.
- 19:48That is the idea here, friends, that love knows no greater love
- 19:56than to lay down your life for a friend.
- 19:59And that is what Jesus is likening here.
- 20:01And when we try to hold on, we're white knuckled, tight
- 20:05fisted onto our life. We lose it because we are so
- 20:10completely distracted and we're so completely depressed and
- 20:16anxious over all the things and we're scared of death and it
- 20:20robs us and it chokes us out. And even if you live a long life
- 20:24in this state, it is. Nothing compared to eternity.
- 20:28So it is better to give your life over for Him and for His
- 20:32sake, and gain eternity, than it is to try to get your little 100
- 20:36years here of pleasure and pleasantries, friends. 26 For
- 20:42what is a man profit if he gains the whole world, but he loses
- 20:47his own soul? Or what shall a man give in
- 20:50exchange for his soul? Think about it, friends.
- 20:52Think about it, think about it. Lock in, think about what the
- 20:56Lord is saying here. What does it even matter, your
- 20:59little 100 years on this earth, if you get everything you've
- 21:03ever wanted, but at the end you're cast into utter darkness
- 21:07of weeping and gnashing of teeth, where the worm never
- 21:10dies. What does it even matter if you
- 21:13are a trillionaire, if you have all the money and power in the
- 21:17world? What does it even matter at the
- 21:19end when you take your last breath?
- 21:21And we need to be hyper fixated upon eternity.
- 21:25We need to be hyper fixated upon the words of Jesus Christ.
- 21:29We do not need to be so worried about this world and this life,
- 21:33for right now, in our security and safety, we need to be sold
- 21:38out. Bondservants lay down lovers of
- 21:40the Lord Jesus Christ, ready to be spilled out at a moment's
- 21:44notice, living open handed, friends, not holding on to
- 21:49anything, not even your own life. 27 For the Son of Man
- 21:56shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then
- 22:01you shall, he shall reward every man according to his works.
- 22:06And we are not saved by works, so that any man should boast,
- 22:09but we are rewarded by works. Don't forget it.
- 22:14It's built in France. It's not a new idea.
- 22:17This is Jesus Christ words. He says he's coming and his
- 22:21rewards are with him. Look up for your redemption is
- 22:25drawing near. And most of what you do is wood,
- 22:28hay and stubble. I cannot say it enough.
- 22:30We are not saved by works, but we are rewarded.
- 22:34And we do not do what we do for the rewards.
- 22:37Because if you're doing what you do for a reward, you've already
- 22:40lost it. Think about it.
- 22:46Simple stuff, friends. We'll end on 28.
- 22:50Truly, I say unto you, there be some standing here which shall
- 22:56not taste of death until they see the Son of Man coming in his
- 23:02Kingdom. What is he referencing here?
- 23:04Did he get it wrong? Did Jesus get it wrong, by the
- 23:14way, all those disciples that were there with him at that
- 23:17time, dead and gone. Jesus has not come back yet.
- 23:22Did he get it wrong? No.
- 23:25He's referencing the Transfiguration, which we will
- 23:28read about when Moses and Elijah come down on the mountain and
- 23:34Peter sticks his foot in his mouth.
- 23:38He's referencing his transfiguration, where the
- 23:43Kingdom comes to earth for that moment and they get to see it.
- 23:48His three special forces that we could say were very privileged,
- 23:57or we could say that they had a knack for getting into trouble,
- 24:03so Jesus had to take him with him.
- 24:07Either way, it's a beautiful story.
- 24:09This is reality, and what you're reading and what you're
- 24:14digesting and what you're thinking about is eternal.
- 24:20Heaven and earth shall pass away.
- 24:22But not one of His words. What an amazing thought.
- 24:27This word that we hold in our hands, how much power is in it?
- 24:31And we need to be students of His word and we don't need to
- 24:36just be listening to it, but we need to be doing it.
- 24:40We need to be thinking about these things and meditating upon
- 24:45these things today. I hope you've been blessed by
- 24:47this chapter. I know I sure have.
- 24:52And praying for every single one of you.
- 24:56I love you and so does God, so does our Lord.
- 25:04We'll see you back here tomorrow.
- 25:06God bless you.
