- 168. Pete Quiz Mixdown 1: This what it sounds like when we do a podcast. We're currently doing one. This is the North American Friends Movie Club, and you might notice something about the name of our show. And that's Friends Comes Before Movie Club because it's important to us as answers are to a quiz. So I gotta ask my two little answers how we do. You guys, how long have we been doing this podcast? For almost four years. And have we ever done an episode where someone comes on and does asks us a quiz, and that is the episode. We have never done that. That would be a first for sure. Surely that's not happening now. You know what, Brent? It is happening because we have super fan Pete, who writes the best emails. So let's welcome Pete. Hello, Pete. Hello. We're doing a very special episode this week, Pete. You've prepared a quiz for us. You took the time to lit to make a spreadsheet with every medal that we've ever given out on the show. Is that correct? That is correct. Yes. I That is awesome. Yeah, it was I was telling Nate it was it was back in September. the idea just popped in my head one day I was listening to an episode and was like, I wonder whose This is the legwork. You know what? We don't need AI. We just need Pete. Pete, yeah. Will you tell us a little bit about yourself? Kate, did you just get a notification? Sorry, Pete, did you just get a notification for your watch that says it's time to stand up? Is that why you looked? Because I looked at the exact same time. Probably. No, okay. Speaking of I already did my standing this hour, so I'm good, guys. Okay. Sorry, Pete. Yeah, not too much to know. I'm I as I mentioned earlier, I live outside of Chicago. I, you know, do kind of humor as a hobby. So I started following you guys all the way back in the the Twitter days, back when it was still Twitter. And at least to listen to the borderline podcast. When I saw you had the new one, I started to listen to it. right away because I always love listening to y'all talk and think you've heard it a million times but the friendship is the the fun part to listen to. So and then every now and then I send you an email, long winded email full of ridiculous words trying to suggest acronyms for your so you can remember the order of your fancy quips. I literally used it earlier because we had to record a segment that we didn't have from last week's show and I was trying to remember what segment was going to come after The quiz that we just recorded and I was like, Fancy quips or do you guys want to do the metals? I like literally use the acronym. Mary Rich is the only important part because those are the only ones you ever and it was funny too, because I think the first time I sent the email, Kate, you were like, We don't mess it up. And then doing this project, it was like the hardest part was just finding where the metals part was in the in the podcast recording. You proved it. I'll be like, no, I gotta go back five minutes and then it's Pete, is there anything that you want to plug that you do online? not really. I've got some stuff online, like I've got a couple of things in the New Yorker and a couple of things in McSweeney's. If you Google me, you can find that. But I don't really like I'm not really impressive professional of it. I just kind of do it as a hobby. So Well and I'll include your social stuff in the description of this show as well, too. So Yeah, I don't I don't I don't do the X anymore. I'm only on the Blue Sky these days. Me too. Yeah, everyone should get off of Twitter because if you're on Twitter, you're a Nazi Brent and Nate. And Nate. Yeah. You guys are s literally supporting the decimation of democracy. I will go to Blue Sky when they stop calling it the skyline. And nobody calls it that. I've never heard this. Literally never heard that. They call the timeline the skyline. No, they don't. Blue Sky Elders. I'm not making this up as I go along. This is not a problem. And when people You're a Nazi apologist. His I'll go as far as to say I'm not, and I don't think his car flies. I think it's ridiculous. His car does not fly. that car don't fly, bro. That car doesn't fly. Wait, what's going on? What are you talking about? Elon Musk pretending to have a flying car. He does not have a flying car. Yeah. We all work all the grid that the car will now fly. If they can't even fucking make a skateboard that hovers back to the future, there's no way you can make a car. You have to start s with skateboards. Or shoes. Start with the little fingerboards first. Get them to hover, then work your way up to a skateboard. Then you're then then you'll have my attention. Wait, did the car have wheels? Yes. Bullshit, see. An actual hover car will not have wheels. There is no purpose for them. You don't need them. Thank you. Pete, why don't you tell us a little bit about the quiz that we're about to embark upon? Sure. So, like I said, I went back and just listened to the metals portion of each episode and recorded in a little spreadsheet. you know, who got the medal from each person? That thing. And so, you know, my original interest was trying to just Who's who's the highest scoring medalist of of the podcast history? And so for that, what I did is I I came up with my own system. You guys might decide to change it. That's fine. But it was three points for a gold, two points for silver, one for a bronze. and then if somebody split their vote, I marked each person down, but I would split the points just so that it didn't the weighting didn't get too out of, you know, somebody getting a bunch of Points. we do do that. We break our own rules. I forgot about that. no, it's it's allowed. I just for scoring purposes, I decided to handle it that way. and then some interesting things though that c came up along the way. So occasionally medals went to characters instead of actors, especially with animated movies. so I would give the medal to the character if the voice actor was not specifically named or awarded. and then occasionally the actor was an animal. often a documentary, but so I kind of made note of that if it was an actor. I have my I will keep it to myself, but I have my own prediction for who got the most medals of all time. But I'm ex I my guess is that will be a question. So I'm not giving my co hosts any information. All right. I have no idea. I think I know. It's someone I've given thanks for in the past, but anyways, okay. This is a perfect segue because I was gonna jump right into the heart of the matter with the first question, which is which actor is the top scoring medalist in North American Friends Movie Club history? Who's gonna go first? You go first, Brent. Okay, I'm going to say Mr. D DL Daniel Day Lewis. So here's the thing. I feel like I'm thinking of the Tom Hanks movies. Has he always gotten the gold versus the Daniel Day Lewis movies? Has he always gotten the gold? I'm gonna say Tom Hanks. I'm gonna say Tom Hanks. Yeah, I'm I'm giving thanks for Tom Hanks on this one. Our only small faced actor. All right. Well, Nate and Kate, you get the points because we give thanks for Tom Hanks, who was the Top scoring medalist in podcast history. What a king. I think Daniel Day Lewis is better. We just haven't watched as many Daniel Day Lewis movies because he's so picky and that's his fault, right? He's like, I gotta go make shoes for six years. I gotta be sad for two years. It's like Applebee's versus like Michelin Star. Applebee's is always good. You always know what you're gonna get. And then the Michelin star is like, it's fancy, it's only special occasions. Like So which we have. And Tom Hanks is let's to I would like to add one more caveat. He Tom Hanks is like Applebee's when you're really hungry. So it's like you're you are enjoying it. Like when you get those moths to stick for sure. It's like well, then I think that question's biased because we don't have Applebee's here. Okay, well, do you have like a fast casual that you really like? Can't really compare. Do you guys have restaurants up there? Yeah. Yeah. What's your Applebee's? What's what's your Applebee's? TGI Fridays? Red Robbins? Don't have any of those. So right off the bat, I'll have April. Yeah. You don't. Never mind. Whatever. Let's Tony Romo's? You got a Tony Romas? No. Like the football player? Tony Roma's. That's what I meant. There's a there's a place here, Tony Roma. I'm a serious. Like, what's he served there? Olive Gard? Interceptions. I don't know anything about football. I just play. It's good. All right, question two. Okay. and Pete, if if since we're doing multiple choice and we might all get one wrong, what would you like your sound to be boy, I never thought of that. I don't know that any of these will result in me getting a point, but if it were I don't know, just give me a Homer Simpson dough, maybe. Great choice. I'll put it in right there just so we at least get one. That's good, Kate. No two party gumble. She doesn't got one. She can't get one out. Good. So going off of that first question, next question for you all is Mr. Hanks has received an impressive nineteen medals for a total score of fifty points. How many points higher is that than the second place finisher? So if you remember, three points for gold, two points for a silver, one for bronze, you got 19 medals, 50 points. How many points more than the second place finisher? One, six, thirteen, or twenty? I think I think I won't go twenty. I wouldn't say six. I'll go thirteen. Lucky thirteen. Halloween. All right. Well, cue up the Brent noise because Tom Hanks came in twenty points higher than any other out. Yeah, it was a huge gap between Tom Hanks and everybody else. Gone forever. We really like him. You do like him, and then also the thing I didn't think about until I embarked on it was that there was a Tom Hanks month, which that's a good point. Yeah. So he had four movies. Skewed. Yeah. Skewed. So Tom Hanks had a total of seven movies that you've given him medals for. Seven. Wow. We've seen seven Tom Hanks movies. Yeah, and in fact I think it was the Captain Phillips episode that made me wonder. I was like, I bet you Tom Hanks is the top and made me Well, he's the captain now of our medals. Yeah, he's the captain now. So All right. So this question is designed to reveal then the next the the rest of the top six, really. So which of these actors is not part of the overall top five? So I'm going to read you five names. One of them is the sixth place persons, but so this is essentially telling you who the top five are, but you have to guess which one's number six. So Daniel Day Lewis, Jim Carrey, Brad Pitt, John C. Riley, or Val Kelner? I will go with James Carey. Yeah, Jim Carrey. John C. Riley. Nate is correct. By half a point, it's John C. Riley in sixth place. The Grinch, Kate. The Grinch. Yeah. Vale Vail Kilmer. Vale Kilmer came in second. Daniel Day Lewis and Jim Carrey are tied for third. And then Brad. Because we had a Jim Carrey we had a Val Kilmer month. Yeah, you had a Val Kilmer. That's why that helped him out a lot. Yeah. But I forgot about Jim Carrey being the Grinch, and then we all gave him a gold for that one. That gave him a lot of points. Ooh, sorry, by the way, is anyone keeping score? Because I was sorry to keep score and then I forgot. this I I've got the score here. I have two, and Brent and Kate have one. Okay. All right. So although everybody on the podcast is an ally, you may have noticed we've been very male heavy so far. who is the top scoring female actor? Is it A, Diane Keaton, B, Katherine O'Hara, C, Meg Ryan, or D, Kristen Wigg? I'm trying to think of like the movies we've seen Diane Keaton. Diane Keaton. I'm gonna say Catherine O'Hara. That was my second guess. One, two. And the answer is Catherine O'Hara. Damn it! Is tied for ninth place with Tony Hops. Tone Hop. Nate has an edge because he's listened to the podcast more than anyone else. That's 100% true. But it also came from our mouths, too. So that's fair. All right, so now we're getting into some more of the interesting stuff. What was the only episode in which medals were not handed out? Or at least if they were, it was not part of the aired broadcast. And the choices are. Hot Rod. Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny. Life or the infamous Bean? Hot Rod. Hmm. I think it's Hot Rod. Yeah, we might have not had the metal segment in place on our first episode. That's quite possible. Or it's Pick of Destiny. What was our second movie? Anyway, then we'll listen to the answer. I'm going with these guys. I'm just gonna say Hot Rod. That's a very good guess since it was the first episode. However, it was bean, believe it or not. so I didn't do a question about the most golds and silvers because they're right. Well, silvers is a little different. Gold's is mostly roughly the same as the overall list. most silvers, I can just tell you quickly the top five is Diane Keaton, Tommy Lee Jones, Brad Pitt, Joe Pesci, and Meg Ryan. so that was a Meg Ryan, surprising. Yeah, we love her though. When she shows up, we're all in love with her. That's that's part of it. You get she got all the silvers for the doors, and then two silvers for You've Got Mail. So yeah. I forgot about the doors. Yeah, okay, that makes sense. Yeah, I forgot about that too. But question number six is: who has won the most bronze medals? And your choices are Winston Duke, Rachel House. Adam Sandler or Vivica A Fox? Ow. That's hard. I love Vivica A. Fox. Don't know the first two. Never saw a movie with those two character or actors in it. So I'm gonna go with I'm gonna go with our lovely VAF, Vivica A. Fox. I'm gonna say Adam Sandler, because I had a dream about him last night. There you go. Well, maybe it's a premonition. What were the first two? first two were Winston Duke and Rachel House. I'm gonna go Rachel House. All right. Well, you had a fifty percent chance of winning this question, but only Brent got one right. Winston Duke and Vivica A. Fox are tied with five bronzes each. I literally need to Google Winston Duke. He was in us. he was great in us. and he was in god best part of us. He's real cute. Fox was set it off Independence Day and Kill Bill Volume One. she's been in three movies. I would never have thought she would have been in three of the movies that we watched, but she was. All right, question number seven. Podcast host Nathan Usher has received more gold medals than which of the following actors? Henry Fonda, Carrie Kuhn. Christian Bale, Killian Murphy, or Nicole Kidman. man. What? Nate has more golds than which of those esteemed actors. God, I can't I can't why am I going blank on Murphy movies? Tommy, Tommy. Did we watch a Killian Movie Murphy movie? I'm going Killian Murphy. Yeah. Yeah, everybody on here is is from movie. Okay. Well. I'm sorry. We didn't yes. that means I blew myself out of the water then because I would have gave him the goal just for Peaky Blinders. Yeah. Yeah. I got this one wrong. Kerry Kuhn, who else did you say? Kerry Kuhn, Henry Fonda, Christian Bale, Killian Murphy, and Nicole Kin. I'm gonna say Nicole Kidman. I'm gonna say Carrie Coon. Well, give yourselves all a point because Nate has more gold medals than all five of those actors. Nate, you're a superstar. You got Kate's gold for Christmas cupcakes, and none of those actors have gotten a gold. There's actually long list on the spreadsheet of actors who have gotten a medal but not a gold. Surprise. that's funny, dude. None of us have been an emotion picture in any kind of award. I don't know, unless Pete has. Pete, have you been in a motion picture? You know, well, technically I have a some movie my friend made, but it's terrible and nobody's ever seen it. But we probably would give you the gold if we saw it. We would give you the gold. That's true. I played cop number two, and I had a memorable performance. Memorable library. you went method. I heard you went method for two weeks. I did. You pulled over so many people. All right, question eight. I mentioned earlier I kept track of act animal actors and also characters. So who was the top-scoring animal actor of the podcast? Your choices are Bart the Bear from the Edge, Shit Eating Cockroaches from Planet Earth Caves. Terry the Dog, aka Toto in Wizard of Oz, Red Panda from Red Panda, or Bluebell from My Octopus Teacher. Okay, have down between two. I know I was anti red panda, I think. so what was the second last one? No. yeah. Okay, so yeah, I have a down between the Okay, I have it between the dog and the octopus. I gotta give it to the octopus. It's gotta be the buss. I liked the octopus, but I really like Bart the Bear. And so I'm gonna say Bart the Bear because I think he was all s I'm not gonna I'm gonna say Bart the Bear. I think I remember us having a lot of good things to say about Toto, about like it Toto not freaking out during the explosions or any of the munchkins running around. He was being a very good dog. So I'm gonna say Toto. Well, I get the point on this one because it was Red Panda from Red Panda. Got all of your golds. no. I don't know this show at all. I think we're doing a terrible movie. Yeah, but I don't know if there was a lot of other choices of who to give a medal to. Yeah, okay. So that's where the point's hated things a bit. Yeah, and also Wizard of Oz, you were, you had humans to give medals out too, too. So I think, the the animal documentary month filled up a lot of the animal stuff. But more interesting than animals are characters. so I will just reveal that Kermit the Frog was the top scoring character. but the question for you is what what percent of the characters who have received medals are Muppets? Wow. Closest to sorry. the choices are ten percent, twenty-five percent, thirty-five percent, or fifty percent. I'm gonna be I'm saying fifty percent. Me too. I think it's fifty percent mupped. No way. We're fucked if it is. Friend is correct. 25% of the characters received medals. Friend tied it. Gone forever. We would have to do a introspective look on this show. 160 episodes and 50% right now. We've watched several Muppet movies. We've watched at least three. Remember that great Christmas movie we watched last year we all loved? That was all Muppets, right? Mm-hmm. Yep. Emmet the Otter, yeah. It goes Kermit the Frog, Emmett the O Emmett Otter's Tied with the Grinch. Then you got Rizzo the Rat, Gonzo, Max from the Grinch movie, and Snoopy. One lineup. Snoopy. One lineup. He really is a star. They are all people I would participate in a bar fight over. They're all very deserved. I would kill for them. Yeah. Score check before Me and Brent are tied with four and you and Kate are tied with two. Okay. So there is an opportunity for a bonus. So this last question, I wanna see if anybody can get it without multiple choice. I can go to multiple choice if you want, but It's an inter something interesting I found that was interesting. I'm not gonna get it. I'm gonna do so bad. she's doing the thing. She's doing the thing. I've been doing bad this whole time. I'm just it's just not you could get a bonus point on this one. So there's a chance for to tie it up. Not gonna do it. So we're still on characters. However, some of the things I did I deemed as characters are real life things that are non human. So examples would be the knife. From the edge got a medal. and the trees from Wizard of Oz got a medal. and so the top scoring real life thing that's been has been awarded medals in two different films, surprisingly. What is that thing? And a bonus point if you can name Two different things. So it's one thing that's been in two different movies. Okay, I have an idea. I I have an idea. This is a very hard question. So I can go to multiple choices. Nobody guesses it off the off the top of their head. We'll all try to guess it in the movies, and then if we all get it wrong, we'll go to multiple choice. I think that makes sense. I have no clue. I I can't even I have an idea, but I don't think it's right. I only can think of the jello. Jello was doing some really good work in Jurassic Park. Yeah, I can't think of the second movie though. I think the C has received medals in both My octopus teacher and Captain Phillips. It's a very good guess. And I was gonna say wigs. and Amadeus and Some and something else. pretty good. What's that? What's Trish? Where's Trish from? Trish. Mr. Del Mar? Mr. Delmar. Trish would have never. I I have to I can't think of two separate things. Did anyone get it right? Nate got extremely close. He got it right and extremely close to the bonus point. It was the ocean. Which received medals in My Octopus Teacher and Castaway. Nate deserves to win this quiz. Yeah, it's still a good job, Nate. Actually, I think it may so I dropped an egg on the last question. So the ocean you're probably the one who gave the medals to the sea. The ocean got Kate's bronze in Castaway. It got Nate's silver in my octopus teacher and Brent's gold. The ocean was just cleaning up. My favorite. First of all, congratulations, Nate. Second of all, amazing quiz, Pete. Yeah, Pete, really outside. And my third shout out goes to us for the knife getting what movie was that? The Edge. The Edge. The Edge I've never I'm gonna kill the bear. I'm gonna kill the bear. I love that movie. What else? A knife. Wilson the volleyball got a few awards. He was another non human character. El Capitan got Kate's Silver. In Don Wall. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Remember that movie? Remember how that kept happening stuff kept happening in that movie? That was a crazy movie. That was the same movie. So yeah, that's what I got for the quiz. I can email you guys this spreadsheet if you're there's lots of interesting things if you're interested in I'd love it. Like to look at that type of stuff, but but Yeah, it was lot of fun to to go back and listen and see where things shook out. So Well, Pete, I give you a ten out of ten. I give you a gold medal and I give you the first official North American Friends Movie Club Medal of Freedom. Pete. Thank you for your service. Thank you for your buyout. Thank you. If we ever do merch, you will receive free merch. Yeah, If we ever get to that point. It's part of the middle of freedom. Part of the You get to pick what what saying goes on your t shirt. I maybe we'll create some sort of Canva gift cer Canva certificate and you can display it proudly after you print it off. Well, thank you so much, Pete. We really appreciate you taking all the time. There was a lot of work actually. And it was super fun to do that and very funny. We it's it's very funny to like think back over all those movies we've done so many. So And also Pete, if you want to continue to keep track, that'd be cool. Yeah, I'll I'll keep track. it'll be interesting to see, how long it takes for things to actually change enough, but maybe Well now that we know we might score differently. Yeah, I did worry about that. I thought about that at one point. I was like, I hope I don't make them start scoring things differently because they're trying to don't worry, we'll forget. We'll we'll forget in two weeks. I still don't know. I Googled it and I still don't know who Carrie Coon is and what movie we'll watch with it. She was in Dead Girl or Gone Girl. She's the Ben Affleck's sister. She was a recent one. I love Carrie Coon. All right. Well, we're gonna set up for next week's episode, so we'll let you go. And thanks a lot so much for doing it. You're the best, he nice to meet you. Yeah, nice to meet you. Nice to see you in person. That's weird, but cool. Yeah, go bears. well that was super fun. thanks again to Pete for doing that for us. Kate, November is Kate's month, and I would love if you would tell us what the theme and the first movie is gonna be. Well, the theme is movies you haven't seen and you like Movies you haven't seen and how much you like them.
