- 4:34up, gurly, Welcome to sc book Gallas and friends. Hello, Hello,
- 4:40Hello, how are you this evening. I am doing wonderfully. I
- 4:45am just happy it stopped raining and it's not super cold here in Texas.
- 4:49It's not supposed to be cold in Texas. Oh my god. We went
- 4:55from one day seventy three degrees and then the bottom fell out in Charlseon and
- 5:00it was like twenty something. It's like, right now, my fear is
- 5:03on. I know your pain. I feel it. It's just not supposed
- 5:09to be this cold here. It's just not okay. So tell us a
- 5:15little bit about you before we get into this homecoming chaos. Why, as
- 5:18you can tell, I am a Southerner. I have lived up north so
- 5:21I can survive in the cold. But I I was raised in Alabama,
- 5:28and I lived in Georgia for a while, and I've been in Texas for
- 5:31the past twenty years. Who knew? Yeah, it's you know, my
- 5:36husband brought me. I thought I was going to stay in Atlanta, and
- 5:42we came here for a job. So we've been here for twenty years.
- 5:45We have two kids, both of them are now adult. Who knew?
- 5:51So that's that's kind of the baseline of me. I'm not sure if you
- 5:58want me to get into how I ended up here per se, like I
- 6:00ended up writing in the first place. Okay, since you are jumped to
- 6:05that question, let's go ahead dig into it. It kind of goes along
- 6:11with who I am. I actually wanted to be a writer when I was
- 6:14eight, so yeah, I started early. So my cousins and I I
- 6:18read a lot of mystery books. I read lots of Nancy Drew and Trixie
- 6:23Belden and Agatha Christie. But you know, they didn't have a whole lot
- 6:26of us in them, and so there weren't many of us. So my
- 6:30cousins and I decided at age eight that we were going to write our own
- 6:34great mystery series. So yeah, we thought we knew what we were doing.
- 6:40You know, the arrogance of eight year olds. So yeah, So
- 6:48so we started. We created a little mini story bible where we made up
- 6:53all of our characters. We kind of matt who was, who was friends
- 6:57with? Who, who liked who? Who a crush on it? I
- 7:00mean freight year olds. I think it was fairly advanced, at least that
- 7:04part of it. One of my cousins was is a really talented artist,
- 7:09so she had drawn all the pictures of what they look like, and we
- 7:13were going to illustrate our She was going to illustrate all of our books.
- 7:16And then I had another cousin who was going to take part of the writing
- 7:19with me, but he also created a map because he wanted to be an
- 7:23architect, so he was kind of designing the neighborhood and designing the houses where
- 7:28they lived. We had all the stuff planned, and well, we didn't
- 7:31plan any stories really, so I didn't really plan any writing. So I
- 7:38was going to be the lead writer, and I don't know. I'm a
- 7:42little older than you are. I if you know what that matrix computer paper
- 7:46is, it's long sheets with the yeah, the yes. I'm sorry.
- 7:54I just didn't know. I didn't know. A lot of people don't remember
- 7:58what that is. So my parents both worked in computers. So we had
- 8:01piles of that around the house and we would take it rip the perforated part
- 8:07off stablet so it looked like a book, and so we would draw cover
- 8:11and I would start writing, because I guess we thought that's what you did
- 8:13to make actual books. And since we had no plan or no plot or
- 8:20anything, you know, we get halfway through, have some pretty pictures in
- 8:22it, and have nowhere else to go. So we had a whole bunch
- 8:28of these little staple books that I ended up putting in my attic. And
- 8:33you know, after I grew up, I went back to my parents' house
- 8:35and asked them for them. We went and attic and looked. My parents
- 8:37were like, we don't know where they are. Maybe the squirrels got them.
- 8:41I said, well, yes, I said, did you throw them
- 8:46away? No, we didn't. Something happened to them. So that's when
- 8:50they said the squirrels got so we all, y'all, I had a whole
- 8:56publishing house. Yes, we had publishing age eight. Yes, if we
- 9:03had some actual story plans, who might have actually been successful. But you
- 9:07know, we have this up to the writing ready. And so you know
- 9:11the crazy thing about it is, I work at a public library. It
- 9:16has well this year is going to be nineteen years wow. And what you
- 9:22said is now the problem that has been sold in the past two years.
- 9:30There were no representations of color. Four kids. It was the cat,
- 9:37the dog, and no fence. Everybody. I love all y'all, but
- 9:39the little white boy named Tommy. And then we got into the girls.
- 9:46And now there are so many books and one of them my daughter's reading right
- 9:50now is called Daysia and Kenya and their twin sisters, and they do mystery
- 9:58stories. The fact that you were doing that at that age, you were
- 10:01already a trail blazer before you're doing you know it still it sounds great,
- 10:09but I wish we still had some had some proof of it or something,
- 10:13because I would love to see what we actually had gotten on paper. I
- 10:18would love to see that would be awesome. Yeah, but it's gone.
- 10:22So we just kind of remember it and talk about it, but we don't
- 10:26have any evidence of it anymore, so guess what it is. But that
- 10:31was our that was my writing. That was the start to my writing.
- 10:35And then you know, I we moved on other things. I went on
- 10:39to medical school and on and on. But that's always kind of been in
- 10:43the back of my mind that I would end up writing again someday. So
- 10:48writing still had a place in your heart. That's that's awesome. Yeah,
- 10:52So let's get into this homecoming Chaos. Go ahead and came at its corus
- 11:05A story about a family. It's the lead character, Jamison, has just
- 11:11come back home from being gone out of the country working for medical relief for
- 11:16four years. She left because she had an aborted wedding and tensions with her
- 11:24mother, so she finally did. She didn't talk to anybody while she was
- 11:28gone except her brother. So she finally decides to come back and she has,
- 11:33you know, upset parents because she hadn't talked to them in four years,
- 11:37and an upset sister because she didn't call her at all either. She
- 11:43felt kind of slighted because she only called the brother and talked to them and
- 11:48her mother, you know, kind of trying to mend some fences, and
- 11:52it's a mother's birthday. It's throwing a big party as soon as she walks
- 11:56in the door, and right before the party, there's a murder at the
- 12:01parents business. So there's just a lot of stuff going on as soon as
- 12:05she walks in the house. And then you know, the detective assigned to
- 12:09the case is good looking. They kind of start butting heads, but they're
- 12:11attracted to each other. So there's a lot going on. You know,
- 12:16she just gets basically through the airport and everything starts caving in. So it's
- 12:24it's a lot of drama, lots of family arguments and or trying to reconcile,
- 12:28plus trying to figure out what's going on with the murder, trying to
- 12:31and trying to figure out, you know, what's going on with the detective.
- 12:35So okay, So we got family drama, we got love, we
- 12:41got murder mystery. Murder mystery. And a part of me was thinking that
- 12:48when some of the parts that I've read that is she still trying to find
- 12:52a sense of herself. Yes, we're okay, okay, because that's that's
- 12:58all because that all kind of ties in with the issues with her mother.
- 13:05There is a prequel. I'm actually getting ready to I'm getting ready to publish
- 13:09it on Amazon. It's a little novella, kind of gets a little bit
- 13:13more into it. It really covers the couple of days before she left.
- 13:18Okay, it counts down the days before she left. But yeah, she
- 13:24you know, given her a past, and if you looked at her,
- 13:26you know she's gone to medical school. She was a model, and she
- 13:28was a successful model when she was a teenager. You know, you would
- 13:31think, wow, she kind of has all of her stuff together. But
- 13:35you know, she made a mistake while she was modeling, and her mother's
- 13:39never let it live it down and so she's kind of adopted her mother's viewpoint
- 13:46of her as who she is, and she's trying to She spent those four
- 13:52years trying to fix that. Just you know, I'm not the big screw
- 13:56up that my mother thinks I am. So okay, okay, because I
- 14:00know I was like, yeah, I saw that, but that that came
- 14:03through in a couple of pages I read. Okay, and now I see
- 14:07how the mom like they kind of intertwined with each other. Okay, so
- 14:13you said that you are in a medical profession. So I see where that
- 14:16inspiration of the book comes from. But can you tell us about other things
- 14:20that inspired parts of the book or the book in general. Yes, the
- 14:26character of Jamie, because that's what everybody calls or actually came to me.
- 14:31Well before I started writing, I am. I am an opthalmologist by training.
- 14:37I also went back too much education, went back and got my MBA,
- 14:41And once I got my MBA, I decided that I didn't want to
- 14:46practice anymore. I actually was trying to get into hospital administration. That didn't
- 14:50work out, so I ended up working in medical education. I worked for
- 14:54WebMD when it first launched. So it's all fun and everything. You are
- 14:58our worst friends at the library because everybody comes in there and tells what they
- 15:03got. Oh yeah, we're the ones that started that. I was.
- 15:07I was one of the people writing, writing the stuff for people to go
- 15:11in there and figure out if that's what they had. Yes, I was
- 15:13there. I'm sorry. I just got to know. It's a problem for
- 15:22it's a problem as a doctor too, because people are, hey, you
- 15:26know what is this? Says I have this, and I'm just thinking,
- 15:28oh, man, I helped cause this monster. Okay, it's my fault.
- 15:35But when I uh, when I decided I was going to move start
- 15:39working at web and d my family, I mean, my dad a little
- 15:45less than my mother because my dad was always very big on I'll support you
- 15:48and whatever you do. I mean, I guess as long as I didn't
- 15:52go out and start breaking the law. But you know, whatever you do,
- 15:56whatever career path you want to take, I'll support you. My mother,
- 15:58my grand my mother's, my aunts, they're all kind of like,
- 16:00what you're You're a doctor, You've reached the pinnacle. What are you doing?
- 16:06Why are you leaving? And it was a lot of pointed conversations that
- 16:11I really didn't want to have anymore. And I originally said, Okay,
- 16:17I'm going to take this, this experience of being a doctor who doesn't want
- 16:22to practice anymore, and write a story about that. Have the lead character
- 16:26be someone who went to medical school but decided she didn't want to practice,
- 16:30and have that be kind of the cataus. It was just gonna be a
- 16:33family drama. But I wasn't ready to write it at that time, so
- 16:40I kind of kept the character in my head. And then when I decided
- 16:44I was ready to write I said, all right, I'll take the character,
- 16:47but I don't want that to be the story. I'll just have that
- 16:48be her background. And then I and since I'm a big mystery person,
- 16:55there was going to have to be some kind of mystery in there, some
- 16:57a dead body somewhere. And then with her background and the issue with her
- 17:04mother, I knew I had to include that, And and that just seemed
- 17:08like a perfect place to have some additional tension from having a the detective who's
- 17:14investigating and you know, started out investigating them a bit, also be somebody
- 17:18that she was attracted to. So that all came out. That's all I
- 17:23came together. See what we're gonna do is we're gonna take a break.
- 17:27And remember I told you earlier about those fun questions that we have later on.
- 17:33Okay, and they're coming up. So guys, you know, we're
- 17:36gonna take a little break, but we'll come back. We got d W.
- 17:40Brooks with us. Turn off the laces, let a candle, tonightlemen
- 18:11a mergant, let's take a shower, shower together. I was abandoned.
- 18:29You must the meader some wealthy and save Jace. Turn off come to girl
- 18:59of what it interview. It was a special trend turn, that's all.
- 19:11I was doing the same thing like the music. Now, every time she
- 19:17plays that, it gives me a chance to online. I'm sitting up.
- 19:21I had heard the song, so I was just like, wow, I
- 19:22hadn't heard this. So you guys, we are back with d W.
- 19:29Brooks and so it's fun time now. Okay, right, So I love
- 19:36movies, okay, and I like to I'm a visual person, so when
- 19:44reading some of the characters of your book, I try to think of stars
- 19:48who would play them in the actual movie. Okay, okay, So for
- 19:53your detective, I cannot remember the name. What was the name again,
- 19:56Police Nick? Nick? Yes, I had Boris Coach. Boris co Juror
- 20:08is gorgeous. The only thing is that the detective, the detective that she
- 20:15likes, is actually a white guy. This time she usually I mean her
- 20:26fiance. I think now Boris cocho is to be looking for the guy that
- 20:30she was engaged to get married. I mean, he's cute. I I
- 20:34make that point. He's he's uh, I can't. I guess I should
- 20:41have thought of who would play him. He's a little more boyish, but
- 20:45this probably one of the few times that she was attracted to a white guy.
- 20:49And I've picked out a couple of people in my head. You probably
- 20:53don't know who they are. I was okay, I have no problem want
- 21:00on Google right now and typing it in while we speak. There's an actor
- 21:06who plays on Do you ever watch Major Crimes? No? Yeah, he
- 21:11plays on like the last two seasons of Major Crimes. His name is Daniel
- 21:17Demoso. All right, so yeah, I actually somebody I actually spent a
- 21:27little time trying to think about this earlier this What did did you find them?
- 21:34Yeah? Okay, you might need to look at Major Crimes? Okay,
- 21:48I'm sorry, Sorry, i'mna be nice. I'm be good this season.
- 21:52I need to look at that shoot Okay, so I can think heir
- 22:00out who would be her character? Was kind of hard for me. Yeah,
- 22:06it's you know. I One of the things is that she's you know,
- 22:11she was a model, and as a lot of people who've read the
- 22:15book who know me kind of recognize that she's tall. I'm five eleven in
- 22:21the book, I have her at five eleven, so so she's she's tall.
- 22:27So when I go around and try to figure out who I would like
- 22:32to portray her. I at least want to make it be. It's hard
- 22:36to find five eleven actresses because they just don't make that many be that tall
- 22:41because it's they'll be taller than most of the guys. So I've had to
- 22:47adjust to heighten my head. I think the last person I had stopped on
- 22:53was Amber Stevens West. She's not a super famous actress, but she's been
- 23:03in quite a few, quite a few TV shows and movies. Yeah,
- 23:08she's I remember, I remember her in a couple of movies. Yeah,
- 23:14yeah, her Come Street, huh street. Yeah, yeah, okay,
- 23:22okay, yeah. So she's supposedly around five nine five ten. I said,
- 23:27all right, that's that's doable. I mean in my in my ideal
- 23:33world, I probably just especially for attitude and everything. I probably would have
- 23:38loved to have gone with someone like Zandaia just because she's kind of sassy.
- 23:44But but she's too young. She's too young. Yeah, I can't see
- 23:48that. Yeah, but she's that. Yeah, she's too young for the
- 23:52role. So I've moved on. So I five eleven, twenty one Jump
- 24:00Street some of them, but there is a twenty two Jump Street that's as
- 24:06a sequel, the TV the movie twenty one Jump Wait, Manue, are
- 24:11we talking about twenty one Jump Street the TV show or the movie? So
- 24:15there is a she was in the movie twenty two Jump Street, right,
- 24:18that's what I say. There is a twenty jump Free Wow, and she
- 24:22was in some other movies. Yeah, I would have never thought that that
- 24:26what it was. Run the World, that's where I know. I knew
- 24:30that was a recent show that I couldn't remember what the neighborhood was. Yes,
- 24:33So that's who I have in my head. She's about the she's appropriate
- 24:38age, she's tall, she's very pretty, and I've seen her play you
- 24:42know, tough but also sassy, So I think she could. I think
- 24:48she could do it. So So one other, one other character. I
- 24:52really want to know this one, the mom. Ha. You know,
- 24:57it's funny. In my I had an idea in my head of what I
- 25:00wanted the mom to look like. But then when I started actually kind of
- 25:04surfing the web, I kept coming back to Vanessa Williams. She's not what
- 25:08I had in my head for her to look like, but she would play
- 25:11her so well because I've seen Vanessa Williams play kind of the haughty, you
- 25:15know, sharp tongue. You can tell she loves her kids, but she's
- 25:19all over them all the time, always hovering. I've seen her do that
- 25:23several times, and she does a really good job with it. Vanessa Williams,
- 25:29I was thinking the mother of Greenley. I cannot remember her name.
- 25:33Greenley, Yes, oh my god, what is her name. I saw
- 25:40her all the way Lynn Woodfield. She would do too, she would do
- 25:45too. I saw her all through the character. Yeah, I didn't even
- 25:49think about that she would do too, because she does. She can do
- 25:52that. You know. I'm very nice. Everybody respects me. But behind
- 26:00those doors I got heartbeat. And when I was reading the little excerpts of
- 26:07it, I was thinking, lady may and that's the character that she plays
- 26:11in Greenlea that on the outside she places I am debonnaire and I am this
- 26:17boy. When they close that church door, it was on and popping with
- 26:22the first lady. Yeah. So I don't have to write that down.
- 26:25I don't have to write that down because I because I, like I said,
- 26:27Vanessa Williams, I think it's in Vanessa L. Williams, the former
- 26:32Miss America. Oh yeah, Vanessa Elwens Vanessa Williams, because somebody is asking
- 26:37its one Vanessa Elwis. She's not what I that, She's not facially what
- 26:42I thought. Lynn Wood feel is actually much closer to who I thought.
- 26:45So thank you. I want to write that down. So one more question,
- 26:51well, two more okay, Well, when you think of music and
- 26:56you think of your book Homecoming Kids, can you build your first track like
- 27:07your first track to the to the song to your first track in the song
- 27:14list of your book. My words are all over the place right now.
- 27:18I have a couple of songs that I think about when I think of the
- 27:22book. I'm I'm I'm kind of old school, so you know they're old
- 27:30That song murder she wrote, do you know that one? That's kind of
- 27:34a reggae song? Although you did not murder that she wrote, Yeah that
- 27:41she wrote, Okay, I'm sorry, I'm gonna be good y'all this season.
- 27:44I promise I'm gonna be good this season. Yes, I forgot,
- 27:49I know exactly. That's work. Yeah, that was that was on That
- 27:55was on the playlist, And the one that kind of for the romance part
- 28:03was a Wicked Game by Chris Isaacs. Basically, it's you know, I
- 28:07can't believe you're making me fall in love with you kind of thing. It's
- 28:12I don't know. It had a really cool video, so it came out
- 28:18like ninety three. Like I said, I'm old school, so you have
- 28:21to look it up. It's a The video will make you love the song.
- 28:25It's nothing else. And where I got my note right here, don't
- 28:27worry about it. So we like to thank you for coming. I've had
- 28:36so much fun with you tonight. But before you leave, you have to
- 28:41tell us how we can contact you, how we could follow you on social
- 28:45media, where we can get your books, if you have any upcoming events,
