- 0:40Hi Cassie.
- 0:41Hello, Caitlyn.
- 0:42Hey creepy people.
- 0:44Hello!
- 0:45Hello!
- 0:46If you're new to our creepy corner of the world, this is PNW Haunts and Homicides, where we
- 0:51chat about true crime, paranormal, and all things spooky in the Pacific Northwest.
- 0:57Yeah. We also do a tarot reading at the end of every episode for deeper insight into the topic.
- 1:04And, you know, you're going to want to probably stick around for that.
- 1:09I think it's a pretty good insight.
- 1:11Yeah. Did I tell you?
- 1:13We actually got a question from a listener about the tarot reading.
- 1:19We did?
- 1:20Yeah.
- 1:21We had someone that asked if we had ever started episodes with the tarot reading.
- 1:28Oh yes, we did use to.
- 1:31We did.
- 1:32Yeah.
- 1:33How long ago?
- 1:34Yeah. So I was explaining sort of the logic that you came around to as you were editing and how it was like,
- 1:41"Man, it seems like we kind of have to just go through and read it all over again when we get to the end."
- 1:47And why not just save it until the end and then both of us know what the topic is and it's really been gangbusters ever since.
- 1:56Uh-huh. It made our powers more powerful.
- 2:00I knew as soon as you said that I was like, "She is going to be like, 'Shit, I did not think that phrase through!'
- 2:10See? Oh boy. Even though I said we talk about spooky stuff in the Pacific Northwest, this is not a spooky episode. Don't get confused.
- 2:23Oh yes, that's fair. They were like, "Well, she said spooky this time and I'm wondering if it's spooky."
- 2:31And no, it's not.
- 2:33I lied. Sometimes I lie.
- 2:35Yeah. Always on purpose. I mean, I said it.
- 2:39How dare you bastardize my phrase.
- 2:42[laughs]
- 2:43Are you ready?
- 2:45That's a loaded-ass question today.
- 2:47Yeah, no. We're not. We're not ready.
- 2:50I did not wake up ready. I'll tell you that.
- 2:52No. She did not wake up like this.
- 2:56I should probably say I did because I looked terrible. So this is fine.
- 3:00All right. I'm going to get right into it.
- 3:03Charlene Voight was reported missing from Littleton Colorado by her family on July 8, 2016.
- 3:12At the time, her sister and the rest of the family had not spoken to her for several days, which was very unusual, even given the recent holiday weekend, which is never a great sign.
- 3:25She shares no relation to the World War II veteran that also made local news in 2021 after his dog tags were discovered in the Grand River back in '21.
- 3:38Oh my gosh.
- 3:39Yes. But I was left with an incredibly eerie feeling as I researched this case.
- 3:46Hear me out.
- 3:48Okay.
- 3:49The dog tags in question belong to Clifford J. Voigt, slightly different spelling.
- 3:59And I'm obviously going to digress to say that I'm completely overcome with giddiness at the idea of dog tags belonging to a man named Clifford being discovered.
- 4:13Oh, that is so cute.
- 4:15I know.
- 4:16I'm going to digress to say that I'm a little bit more than I thought.
- 4:21I'm going to digress to say that I'm a little bit more than I thought.
- 4:25I'm going to digress to say that I'm a little bit more than I thought.
- 4:29I'm going to digress to say that I'm a little bit more than I thought.
- 4:34I'm going to digress to say that I'm a little bit more than I thought.
- 4:39Though I'd argue that the discovery of dog tags far from the banks of the river is hardly a story that we can necessarily assume ended well.
- 4:50No.
- 4:51Yeah.
- 4:52He was washing his face and then they slipped off into the river, right?
- 4:58Anyways, I have to ask, is it just me or does the thought of finding anything in a river lead everyone to escalated threat level type thinking?
- 5:08I think so.
- 5:09Okay.
- 5:10Probably just me, but I don't think it's a fear of the water.
- 5:13I don't think it's just you though.
- 5:15It's not.
- 5:16It's eerie finding stuff, you know?
- 5:18Anywhere, just like laying anywhere, seeing a shoe, you're like, anything could have happened.
- 5:24Yeah, I just, I think the fact that it's dog tags too, like that doesn't really belong there.
- 5:30And like if you're parted from your dog tags in a river, I think it speaks to something, you know, maybe not so awesome happening potentially.
- 5:40But I think we can all breathe a sigh of relief, Clifford, the veteran, not the cartoon canine was originally from Grand Rapids.
- 5:51And he has since been laid to rust in Mesa, Arizona seemingly peacefully.
- 5:58I was left with the impression that no reasonable or disquieting concerns regarding foul play of any kind or an accidental drowning where a factor in his passing.
- 6:10So I at least feel better about that.
- 6:13That's good.
- 6:14Yeah.
- 6:15That's interesting. He's from Grand Rapids. He found his dog tags in some rapids.
- 6:21Yeah, it is weird.
- 6:23There's a lot of weird connections here.
- 6:25I didn't even make that one until you said that just now.
- 6:28Are we just spiraling in everything's a connection?
- 6:31Yeah, we, that's kind of the name of the game here.
- 6:34I cut out a couple of other things that I was like, oh, and it just was like, no, nobody, no one has the time.
- 6:44But I'm afraid my illusion to a big red dog just now.
- 6:49Well, that's as close to love and light as this story is likely to stray.
- 6:54Unfortunately, particularly for man's best friend.
- 6:59I hate you. I know. I'm so sorry.
- 7:02How did these things happen?
- 7:05I didn't realize that there was anything that was going to make you unhappy about a dog until after I was almost
- 7:13three quarters of the way through researching and writing this.
- 7:18You know, you claim this, but I'm pretty sure you just Google dead dogs and true crime cases.
- 7:22And that's how you pick them now.
- 7:24I, that's not accurate, but way to upset the listeners, Cassie.
- 7:29I forgive you.
- 7:31I hope so.
- 7:32At the time of her disappearance, Charlene was a 36 year old woman and a recent graduate of Cal Poly Pomona.
- 7:41She majored in landscape architecture.
- 7:44Oh, that's a really cool major.
- 7:47And I, when she graduated, she moved away from her home and her family in California
- 7:53and resettled in Colorado as she entered a new phase of her life.
- 7:58Kind of a new phase of her life.
- 8:01It certainly had plenty of promise based on this limited data set.
- 8:06At least that's what I would have thought.
- 8:09Her boyfriend, Jeffrey Byer, also happened to live in Colorado at the time.
- 8:15So it seems fair to say that he probably had a little something to do with her decision to pack up and move.
- 8:21Oh, I see. Yes.
- 8:23You kind of want to live where your boyfriend lives, you know?
- 8:25I guess.
- 8:26Or maybe don't.
- 8:28Okay.
- 8:29Listen.
- 8:30Keep some of the mystery alive, people.
- 8:33There was not a lot of mystery left at this point.
- 8:36We're going to get there.
- 8:37So, I'm going to go to the next slide.
- 8:40I'm going to go to the next slide.

- 10:15I'm going to go to the next slide.
- 10:16I'm going to go to the next slide.
- 10:17He's a dumpster man.
- 10:18He's a dumpster man.
- 10:19That's very valuable service to provide.
- 10:22It is.
- 10:23The whole waste disposal thing is going to circle back in the sort of formulaic and predictable
- 10:29way that even lifetime movie writers would think was just a little bit too cheesy or too
- 10:36much of a trope.
- 10:37This sort of feels like the universe getting a funny little jab in on who this dude turns
- 10:43out to be.
- 10:44Reportedly.
- 10:45Allegedly.
- 10:46Because at this time, I'm unaware of any unequivocal resolution in this case.
- 10:53I have to say things like reportedly and allegedly, which is deeply painful and offensive
- 10:59to my psyche.
- 11:01I have a lot of respect for anyone that tackles a job like this that requires a certain
- 11:06fortitude of the old factory senses.
- 11:10But this guy is the hot garbage juice in this case.
- 11:17You.
- 11:18It's one of my favorite phrases to express distaste for just about anything.
- 11:24Not that I'm claiming ownership to the phrase or any other.
- 11:28Well, except maybe hashtag never Bundy.
- 11:31Yeah.
- 11:32Yeah.
- 11:33Speaking of hashtag never Bundy, you're welcome.
- 11:36You get an introduction to the inner workings of my brain inserting a completely unapologetic
- 11:43plug right now.
- 11:44Not an ad.
- 11:46Just an ADHD moment.
- 11:48Going get the book Bright Young Women by Jessica Knoll if you haven't already.
- 11:54We received an advance copy, which I really hope will just be a thing now for us because
- 12:00I love books and the best kind are those that are from fantastic writers for free 99.
- 12:06It's a really good book so far.
- 12:10But we also ordered it on Audible as well.
- 12:12Yes.
- 12:13They may have known what they were doing.
- 12:17Based on my early girl, math projections, I'm confident in saying it was worth every
- 12:23cent.
- 12:24You guys know how I feel about feelings.
- 12:27Cassie and I are making our way through the book and it has been such an intense slow building
- 12:32thriller and an emotional roller coaster, depending on who you ask.
- 12:38Yeah.
- 12:39So please read the book and join us for our Patreon book club.
- 12:42We'll be announcing the date for that livestream shortly.
- 12:46If we haven't already.
- 12:48We'll add a link to the book and as always for the Patreon in the show notes.
- 12:53Can we change it to hashtag never the defendant?
- 12:56Oh my god.
- 12:57Yeah.
- 12:58You'll have to read the book to figure that one out.
- 13:01Oh my god.
- 13:02Amazing.
- 13:03Never the defendant.
- 13:06Back to Jeffrey.
- 13:08Police were called to the shared residence of Charlene and Jeffrey.
- 13:13He did answer the door, but only spoke to responding officers outside after closing the door
- 13:20to the residence.
- 13:27Okay.
- 13:28In his retelling of recent events at the time, he told officers that he had fought with Charlene
- 13:34in the evening leading up to the holiday.
- 13:38He stated that she had wanted to party.
- 13:41Who doesn't?
- 13:42Mm-hmm.
- 13:43I know.
- 13:44He had to work over the weekend and was unable to partake in the festivities.
- 13:51Poor guy.
- 13:53Yeah.
- 13:54Is anyone else lifting their eyebrow skeptically?
- 13:58I sure am.
- 14:01Prior to Charlene's disappearance, the couple reportedly went out with friends drinking
- 14:05on June 30th.
- 14:08The night's activities included the four hitting the slopes as well.
- 14:12And by that, I mean doing cocaine.
- 14:15Okay.
- 14:16It's July.
- 14:17Mm-hmm.
- 14:18Yeah.
- 14:19Okay.
- 14:20I know that would be weird.
- 14:21I thought maybe you'd get it if I said it and I was like, it's July.
- 14:22She's going to understand they're not actually skiing, right?
- 14:25I don't know Colorado.
- 14:26I don't know either.
- 14:27There's some high spots that maybe have snow in July.
- 14:30I don't know.
- 14:31High spots.
- 14:32Get it.
- 14:33I'm just certain that's what all the kids are saying these days though.
- 14:36Hitting the slopes.
- 14:37I don't know.
- 14:38Yeah.
- 14:39I don't know.
- 14:40Don't you drugs?
- 14:41Yeah.
- 14:42Unfortunately, the evening took a dark turn when a seemingly agitated Jeffrey pulled the
- 14:48female half of the other couple that had joined them into another room where he promptly
- 14:55locked the door and held her allegedly sexually assaulting her.
- 15:01On July 10th, Jeffrey gives a formal statement to investigators at the police station regarding
- 15:08Charlene's apparent disappearance several days prior.
- 15:13Just days later on July 12th, Jeffrey is arrested for the unnamed female friend's sexual
- 15:19assault.
- 15:21It should also be noted that Charlene's family shared additional information with local
- 15:26authorities in Colorado following law enforcement's initial visit to their shared home to question
- 15:33Jeffrey.
- 15:35Charlene had filed a restraining order against Jeffrey dating back to 2012 when they were
- 15:44both living in California.
- 15:47Oh, wow.
- 15:48So this isn't a new thing.
- 15:51She described an episode of physical abuse lasting upwards of 20 minutes that made her
- 15:57fear for her life in his presence.
- 16:01Charlene had said of the altercation, I thought I was going to die.
- 16:05Luckily, he finally stopped and went to bed.
- 16:09Jeff baked me not to call the cops on him since he knew that this would put him in jail
- 16:14for a long time due to his past history of physically assaulting other women.
- 16:22Oh, no, please don't tell them I did it again.
- 16:26Mm-hmm.
- 16:27Fuck, man.
- 16:29Jeffrey did in fact have a history of abuse dating back to at least 2007 involving his
- 16:35ex-wife as well.
- 16:38Ultimately, he pleaded guilty in the domestic violence incident and served jail time board
- 16:44in 2013.
- 16:45Not enough.
- 16:46Mm-hmm.
- 16:47Nope.
- 16:50This prompted an emergency ping to be issued for Charlene's phone shortly after she was
- 16:56reported missing.
- 16:58Both law enforcement and her family were so concerned for her safety in light of, I
- 17:04don't know, recent events.
- 17:06And then, you know, once they had the entirety of the terrifying multi-state backstory.
- 17:14The report they received showed that her most recent activity had taken place on July
- 17:201st near the apartment that she shared with Jeffrey.
- 17:25That was her last activity.
- 17:28Charlene's phone last transmitted to a tower at 4965 South Rio Grand Street.
- 17:37No subsequent activity was reported on her device.
- 17:43The couple shared apartment address was also on Rio Grande Street, where the neighbor
- 17:51reported hearing sounds that may have been an indication of a disturbance in the neighboring
- 17:57unit belonging to Charlene and Jeffrey.
- 18:01You know, unless they wake up early to rearrange the furniture in their apartment.
- 18:06Huh.
- 18:07It's possible my upstairs neighbors typically do at least once or twice a week, but...
- 18:12I hope nothing shady is going on up there, Jesus.
- 18:15I think about it all the goddamn time.
- 18:19I think you have a log next year, but like writing down the kind of sound in what time.
- 18:25It's not a bad idea.
- 18:27Circling back, the charges related to the alleged sexual assault were eventually dropped in
- 18:33service to the prosecutors working on Charlene's case.
- 18:38The cases were so intertwined, if they moved ahead with the charges related to the alleged
- 18:44sexual assault, they would have been required to turn over basically everything they had
- 18:51during discovery.
- 18:54Everything they had in a future murder case.
- 18:59Oh.
- 19:00And let's face it, it's less than ideal for a future murder trial to have already shown
- 19:05your hand.
- 19:06Yeah.
- 19:07It would be a major tactical disadvantage for the state in all likelihood.
- 19:12Although, and you'll see why at the end here, maybe we go...
- 19:19Maybe we circle back again.
- 19:20Now, maybe we just charge him for the sexual assault as well.
- 19:24Yeah.
- 19:25Maybe we do that.
- 19:27That was the sexual assault on the friend?
- 19:29Yes.
- 19:30Oh my gosh.
- 19:31How awful for her though, too.
- 19:33This happened her, now it's not nothing's happening with it.
- 19:37Yeah, legally nothing happened.
- 19:39Oh God.
- 19:40But I think even fairly early on in the case, everyone involved could see where Charlene's
- 19:46case was headed, despite the fact that Charlene had not been found.
- 19:52According to the August 2019 indictment released on Monday, June 1st, 2020, so almost
- 20:01a year later, at the very height of the panorama, the panini sandwich of the plague, known as COVID,
- 20:09less fun to say though, I have to.
- 20:13The Panama.
- 20:14Jeffrey Scott Beier was charged with first degree murder, first degree felony murder, sexual
- 20:20assault, two counts of tampering with evidence, third degree assault, and two counts of attempting
- 20:26to influence a public servant by misleading authorities about Charlene's disappearance.
- 20:32Dick.
- 20:34He was also charged with aggravated animal cruelty.
- 20:39No!
- 20:40I knew it was coming, but I didn't...
- 20:42I was hoping it wouldn't come anyway.
- 20:44Yeah.
- 20:45Which I'm paying to say that I need to issue obviously a trigger warning for bad things
- 20:52happening to animal.
- 20:53Okay.
- 20:54We're not quite there yet, but I'll let you know when we get there.
- 20:59Again, they're still looking for Charlene, whether she's alive or it simply her remains,
- 21:05so let's get back to the investigation.
- 21:09Everyone brace themselves though.
- 21:11After this episode drops, I could foresee some really awkward interactions at a few Colorado
- 21:20targets.
- 21:21Oh, no.
- 21:22I'm literally staring at a target bag under your desk right now.
- 21:27Though Charlene is gorgeous and there's certainly a kindness behind her eyes that feels uncommon.
- 21:33She looks very much like a number of women that doubtless, countless people interact with
- 21:39every day.
- 21:41I feel like when you see a picture of her, if this is immediately following her disappearance,
- 21:46you're looking around everywhere going, "Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry that I thought you were
- 21:52the woman that they're looking for."
- 21:54Oh, okay.
- 21:55Because she just has one of those very all-American girl faces that...
- 22:00Well, they frequently make the news.
- 22:03I get that, yeah.
- 22:05The Charlie Project and other Missing Persons databases described her "thusely."
- 22:12Missing since 2016 from Little Tin, Colorado, she is classified as an endangered Missing 36-year-old
- 22:21female.
- 22:22I have to take a deep breath before this next part.
- 22:26It hurts my heart.
- 22:28Measuring 5' and weighing 105 pounds.
- 22:33Oh, she's just little.
- 22:35This is an incredibly small woman, very slight.
- 22:40And I can't help but think that it takes someone particularly evil to pray upon her.
- 22:47Distinguishing characteristics that they listed were a Caucasian female since when has
- 22:55that ever been a distinguishing feature?
- 23:00With blonde hair, brown eyes, pierced ears.
- 23:05That's a distinguishing feature.
- 23:07Wow, okay.
- 23:09And a scar on her abdomen from a prior car accident.
- 23:13She was also said to have a two-inch wide butterfly-shaped birthmark on her lower back right
- 23:20above the booty.
- 23:22A butterfly...
- 23:23Butterfly?
- 23:24Butterfly?
- 23:25I know.
- 23:26I thought you were going to say tattoo.
- 23:28Well, especially when you hear that it's in the...
- 23:31You know, the knot.
- 23:33Tramp stamp.
- 23:34It...
- 23:35Who cares?
- 23:36Tramp isn't even a thing.
- 23:37Yeah.
- 23:38Shut up.
- 23:39That is really cute, though.
- 23:41Oh, my God.
- 23:42I don't think that I need to tell you that this description could probably be tens of
- 23:48thousands, if not hundreds of thousands or even millions of women.
- 23:53Yeah, I think the only distinguishing was the birthmark.
- 23:56Yeah.
- 23:57Yeah.
- 23:58Luckily, the indictment reveals that there was surveillance footage recovered in the
- 24:04course of the investigation that left something akin to a breadcrumb trail.
- 24:10Stay stupid motherfuckers.
- 24:13In early July 2016, shortly after Charlene's whereabouts get a little bit sketchy, according
- 24:20to the indictment, a number of hours between roughly July 1 and 2, Jeffrey was seen on
- 24:27numerous recovered surveillance footage clips.
- 24:32Honestly, it was like he was on like a scavenger hunt.
- 24:37And all that was required was to be on as many cameras as possible.
- 24:42I mean, now, oh my gosh.
- 24:44You literally cannot step outside without being on a camera.
- 24:47No, you really can't.
- 24:49I sound like such an old person.
- 24:51I know.
- 24:52Before.
- 24:53Or like a, you know, anti-government or like conspiracy theorist.
- 25:00They're watching all the time.
- 25:01Jeffrey is seen withdrawing $7,000 at a local Wells Fargo question.
- 25:08Yeah.
- 25:09Do you have to go in for that?
- 25:10Or can you get it from the ATM?
- 25:13You cannot take $7,000 out of an ATM.
- 25:15I wasn't sure.
- 25:16That was like a serious question.
- 25:18I wasn't sure.
- 25:19But it's a really good question because it certainly can differ by bank.
- 25:24But typically there's a maximum that you can take out and every bank handles it differently.
- 25:29But it's anywhere between two and maybe $500.
- 25:33Oh, okay.
- 25:34And so some people will go to multiple ATMs.
- 25:38Some of them impose a daily limit.
- 25:40So no matter how many ATMs you go to, the max you can take out is like 300 bucks.
- 25:45Okay.
- 25:46I think I've ever had the max in my account to take out.
- 25:49So I wouldn't know that.
- 25:50You're like $300.
- 25:53Would I win the lottery?
- 25:55Seriously.
- 25:56Yeah.
- 25:57No, for real.
- 25:58I think I'm exaggerating what I've got.
- 25:59No, I wouldn't.
- 26:00Yeah.
- 26:01I get it.
- 26:02He also went to Home Depot at Santa Fe and I 25 where he's seen moving something from
- 26:11the back seat to the trunk.
- 26:14With surveillance footage and receipts verify that this was on the very same date that he purchased
- 26:22a gallon of lighter fluid at Home Depot.
- 26:25Oh, boy.
- 26:26Is that the only purchase he made to my knowledge?
- 26:31Look, that is.
- 26:32You buy a couple other things to make it less suspicious.
- 26:35It's like when you buy tampons, you obviously like you know you wrap that shit in a magazine
- 26:41and buy a pint of ice cream just in case.
- 26:46Off exit 304 in Bennett, Colorado, he stopped at an abandoned farm off the I-70 highway.
- 26:55He was there for roughly 20 minutes when officers later searched the property.
- 27:01A burn pile was discovered.
- 27:04Did they have surveillance footage at the farm?
- 27:07I'm not sure what the source of this particular section of the footage was.
- 27:12I didn't dig that deep into the indictment and all of the other information, but I was
- 27:19kind of curious about that as well.
- 27:21I was like, how did they know he was there for 20 minutes?
- 27:24Yeah, it's interesting.
- 27:27The reason why I didn't really dig any further on that is that there doesn't appear to have
- 27:32been anything of particular evidentiary value beyond the fact that there was a burn pile.
- 27:38Yeah, because he burned it.
- 27:40Yeah.
- 27:41Why else would you burn something?
- 27:44Yeah, but I mean, that's just at least what's publicly revealed in the indictment.
- 27:50The indictment is in part redacted.
- 27:53Oh.
- 27:54So, I don't know.
- 27:57I mean, could there be more to that?
- 27:59Possibly.
- 28:00I think so.
- 28:01I think primarily it's redacted to protect the name of the people associated with the sexual
- 28:08assault case.
- 28:10Oh.
- 28:11Continuing on his route, Jeffrey also stops at two separate I-76 gas stations for roughly
- 28:19five minutes each.
- 28:21Doesn't say that he purchased gas.
- 28:24So maybe he did.
- 28:27Maybe he didn't.
- 28:28I don't know.
- 28:29He just had to use the bathroom.
- 28:31Like what guy is making two five minute stops on his drive home?
- 28:35Maybe he has IBS.
- 28:36I don't know.
- 28:37I...
- 28:38Okay, five minutes.
- 28:39A man with IBS.
- 28:40Five minutes.
- 28:41Anyway.
- 28:42I mean, men are gross.
- 28:43Maybe he didn't wipe or wash it.
- 28:45Ew.
- 28:46He just dropped the loan left.
- 28:48Okay.
- 28:49Moving on.
- 28:50From there, he travels on to his apartment in the Denver area, but only remains there briefly.
- 28:58He makes an additional trip to his company lot, where he reportedly stays for roughly two
- 29:04hours.
- 29:06His final trip is to Tower Landfill in a large truck, where he dumps a load of less than
- 29:13800 pounds, which doesn't necessarily...it sounds weird.
- 29:20Like is that not a lot?
- 29:22And apparently it's not.
- 29:23For reference, there was apparently no confirmed or logical business reason for him to make
- 29:29this trip, because it's a notably small load for drop-off in his line of work.
- 29:36And it's like a holiday weekend.
- 29:38Yep.
- 29:39Yeah.
- 29:40It's right before the holiday.
- 29:42Interesting.
- 29:43And shall rest, dang.
- 29:46A search conducted by law enforcement in November of 2016 revealed many personal items
- 29:52belonging to Charlene.
- 29:56And here's where I need to issue that trigger warning.
- 30:00It's like I gave you a trigger warning for a trigger warning.
- 30:06We'll keep this quick, like ripping off a bandaid.
- 30:09Okay.
- 30:11Also discovered with Charlene's personal belongings was the body of a small dog wrapped in a red
- 30:18sweater believed to have belonged to Charlene's missing Chihuahua Toby.
- 30:25No, Toby!
- 30:28The dog had been decapitated.
- 30:31Why?
- 30:32Sadly, his head has not been located, which kind of makes you wonder about that burn pile.
- 30:44Why would he...I don't.
- 30:46It's just the head.
- 30:48I don't know.
- 30:49I don't know.
- 30:51Maybe he thought the face of the dog would be identifiable.
- 30:55I don't know.
- 30:57I know.
- 30:58You don't know.
- 30:59Why does anyone do something so horrific to an animal?
- 31:04I mean, not to mention to his girlfriend.
- 31:06Well, yeah.
- 31:07Allegedly.
- 31:08But just like a tiny little...just like an animal that they're so innocent.
- 31:14I don't get it.
- 31:15Yeah.
- 31:16I just... her car was also found abandoned in a dirt lot at 50-99 South Rio Grande Street. So...
- 31:29close to their apartment, and wear her cellphone last pinged. Okay, just making sure you
- 31:39caught that one. I mean, I'm just agreeing with you. Oh, okay. I don't know. My mind is not here.
- 31:45Yeah, you're like, "I'm not here."
- 31:48At this time, Charlene also remains missing, and I have to assume essentially presumed dead.
- 31:56You know who else was really difficult to locate all of a sudden, though?
- 32:02Jeffrey?
- 32:04I... good guess. Oh, yeah. Snick a little snake that he was. He'd made his way to Moscow.
- 32:14Nope. Not Idaho.
- 32:16I was like, "Seriously, Russia? Is it Russia?"
- 32:19Yeah. The other one.
- 32:21He went all the way to fucking Russia.
- 32:23Motherfuckin' Moscow... Russia.
- 32:26What?
- 32:28That's really far away.
- 32:32The theory is that he crossed the border into Canada in November of 2016,
- 32:38before traveling on to resettle in Moscow. And settle he did.
- 32:44By Valentine's Day 2017, he had married.
- 32:49What?
- 32:50And by the following year, he and the Russian Mrs. were welcoming their first child, a daughter.
- 32:59Holy shit, he moves fast.
- 33:01Yeah.
- 33:02Wow.
- 33:03But apparently, the happy little family life wasn't built to last.
- 33:07You don't say?
- 33:09Yeah.
- 33:09By 2019, his wife had filed for divorce.
- 33:15She described horrific abuse at his hands, being brutally beaten and strangled,
- 33:21and in some cases, even the fact that she was holding their infant daughter at the time,
- 33:26did nothing to dissuade him from attacking her.
- 33:29Oh, the poor woman.
- 33:30Yeah. And they're poor child.
- 33:33He had also, apparently, brought a new girlfriend into his home, which I would say,
- 33:40either of these facts taken separately, is certainly grounds enough for the divorce.
- 33:45But apparently, by this time, she also knew about his misadventures with the law
- 33:53in little tin, Colorado.
- 33:54Okay, wait. So he brought a girlfriend into the house where they were living together.
- 33:59So it was in July of that year that she reached out to police here in the States,
- 34:06to let them know where they could recover their little reptilian escapee.
- 34:12Nice.
- 34:13I thought so.
- 34:14Good job.
- 34:14Yeah.
- 34:15She stated that Jeffrey had come to Russia because he was told there was no extradition treaty,
- 34:22which kind of sounds like Bolshe, because he's an American.
- 34:30So extradition, in case anyone's wondering, is the act of making someone return for trial to
- 34:38another country or state where they have been accused of doing something illegal.
- 34:43So, okay, you flee.
- 34:45We pull your backpack.
- 34:48After being indicted in the US, Jeffrey was put on Interpol's database and was eventually picked up
- 34:58in Moscow. Now he awaits Russia's decision regarding extradition and a Moscow jail,
- 35:06because I mentioned he's not from Russia, and actually he's probably no longer even married to
- 35:15someone who is a Russian citizen. So I'm not sure why they would want to keep him
- 35:23other than to maybe piss off America. Yeah, but like who is he who cares?
- 35:29Yeah, knowing cares.
- 35:30According to the Russian daily newspaper,
- 35:34Comerson, he hopes to obtain Russian citizenship, which again, I don't know why they would want him.
- 35:43Seriously.
- 35:44He claims to be a victim of political persecution.
- 35:51What does that even mean? Further asserting that he is entitled to asylum.
- 35:58He's one of those entitled people.
- 36:02I'm a mediocre white man. How deserve everything.
- 36:09Jeffrey claims that he has been framed for murder. He has also pointed the finger at the
- 36:18Colorado prosecutor and Republican Party candidate, George Brockler, who he claims is
- 36:27hunting him for political reasons. What would those be?
- 36:32You know, my next line says, which I don't know, Jeff is repeated abuse and a possible murder
- 36:40committed in the country attempting to extradite you what you would consider political reasons.
- 36:49I almost have no words literally. What the fuck?
- 36:53If the president opts to grant Jeffries request, it will be impossible for him to be extradited to the US as
- 37:04Russia's constitution does not allow for extradition of its own citizens. I see, I see.
- 37:15And that wouldn't be such a problem if we were kind of not on such great terms.
- 37:22So it's unclear whether he will be returned to Colorado to face the charges against him.
- 37:31No court dates will be scheduled until he is physically present in the
- 37:38Arapaho County Detention Center. He's still in Russia. He's still in Russia. As far as I know,
- 37:46I really tried to dig and see if any sort of arrangements were made in the last couple of years.
- 37:55And you guys again, Russia like, she's not that cool with us. Yeah. So I don't know, but
- 38:07honestly, like, okay, that's fine. You can keep him. I feel like maybe a Moscow jail is
- 38:13hopefully he's still in there. Yeah. Like, is that better? Maybe that's better. Maybe, you know,
- 38:20I'll leave you with the almost eerily optimistic words of district attorney, George Brockler.
- 38:32Nobody should be able to walk away from murder. I will do everything in my power to bring a perpetrator
- 38:39to justice. I am pleased that in the death of Charlotte Voight, there is now a process in place
- 38:47to accomplish that. That last part. What's the process? Extradition. Okay. So the thing that, but
- 39:00that's why I say eerily optimistic. Like, I need an incredible feat that, you know, they were able to
- 39:07you know, track him down halfway across the world. But that process, you mentioned. Oh, okay. So
- 39:18all you have to do is get Putin to agree to extra poof down. It's going to be a little bit of a
- 39:24challenge here, for a while probably. Sort of a layered situation. Like a Russian nesting doll. Yeah.
- 39:33I don't know. Maybe, maybe some tarot will make you feel better. I have a fancy new deck to show you.
- 39:40I know how you love that new deck. Terrible. Slash Oracle death. Question mark.

- 40:48listening and stay creepy, my friends. You guys were back! And don't worry, we did get more wine.
- 41:01Well, of course. This is a special fancy fancy deck. It's an oracle deck. So we're doing something
- 41:13lightly different, which is both upsetting and exciting.
- 41:18Hopefully not too upsetting. Oh, that's interesting. Oh, what's this guy called?
- 41:25Praying Mantis. I found one of these in my food one time. Oh, gross. Yeah.
- 41:32Giant eyes just staring right back at me. Yeah. Okay, so Prank Mendes, mindfulness, strategy,
- 41:41and calm. Execution matters. Yeah. It does. It's funny because I read the keywords and I was thinking,
- 41:51"Oh, it's all the things that Jeffrey didn't do." Cool. That's what I was thinking too.
- 41:55Plan each moment carefully before taking action. Remain still. Mindfully planning your course of attack
- 42:05and be certain that your strategy will not harm your neighbor. In a state of calm, your mind will more
- 42:15easily open to the abundant opportunities surrounding you. Yeah, he doesn't have very many
- 42:21opportunities now. I don't know. I hear Moscow's nice this time of year. Is it? No. Is it cold? Isn't it
- 42:30cold? I don't know what it's like this time of year, but I hear it's frequently quite cold.
- 42:36Quite cold. Tide cold. Should I pull another one? Yes. Oh, okay. Oh, I can barely read this.
- 42:44Jay. It's a Jay. Communication assertiveness, resourcefulness. Your input is essential. Say what you need
- 42:56with this concise words as possible. Hmm. Decide whether you want to plant your seeds in places where
- 43:06they can grow into future harvest or use them to nourish a situation more immediately. Interesting.
- 43:14Like someone wasn't doing any planting of their seeds. He was planting a seed. He wasn't nourishing his
- 43:21seeds. Yeah. Yeah. Don't just go plant near seed willy nilly on people who don't want their
- 43:27your fucking seed planted there will willy nilly. Can't we all just keep our hands through
- 43:32ourselves? Is it that hard? Yeah. Apparently. I think this one's really interesting because don't
- 43:40they like eat their man's head after they mate? I don't know. They might eat the whole thing. I just
- 43:46feel like I've always just heard they bite their head off after you know. Yeah. Isn't that what
- 43:50everyone's heard? I think they probably start with the head. I don't know. We should Google it.
- 43:57Okay. Google it. And then it's also like praying mantis. So like someone praying on someone.
- 44:04Very relevant. I literally said someone prayed on her. Oh, did you say? I'm so sorry. No, it's
- 44:11no, it's just funny because it's like that choice of words. Oh, did you say it in this reading just now?
- 44:18No. No. In the episode. Oh, you did. I was like, oh, you already said it. I'm a dummy. I wasn't listening.
- 44:25National Geographic wants us to know. First of all,
- 44:32not all praying mantis species cannibalize their mates. How many species are there? I don't know.
- 44:40I thought there was just the one. He says maybe if the female is starving or if the male irritates her,
- 44:48which is probably usually the case. So are they really that like, is it that different than we thought

- 48:39- Okay, shh.
- 48:39- I was trying to create some ambiance.
- 48:47- Yeah.
- 48:48- Grassy ass.
- 48:49(laughs)
