- 0:03Speaker 1: Foul Territory live at the Winter Meetings in Orlando. Oh,
- 0:05Speaker 1: it's on today. Nothing happened yesterday. Things are happening this morning.
- 0:10Speaker 1: You've got Shober talk, We've got it, Mendez talk. Money
- 0:13Speaker 1: is moving.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Yeah, we were supposed to have Dave Roberts, which something
- 0:17Speaker 2: came up and I don't know why he can't for
- 0:19Speaker 2: the last second. Something happened crafts for the Dodgers. I
- 0:22Speaker 2: don't know exactly what, but something did.
- 0:24Speaker 1: We're hearing things, Pratt.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I have an idea, but I'll let I won't
- 0:29Speaker 3: bury the leaf.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Good good. We're gonna start with the other move though.
- 0:33Speaker 1: So let's hit some breaking news here. Kyle Schwarber signing
- 0:44Speaker 1: with a team in Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia Phillies. Sorry Pirates.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Weird though he got five years and the Pirates only
- 0:52Speaker 2: offered four years.
- 0:53Speaker 4: Oh, man, Ken's shrining.
- 0:55Speaker 1: You were in on him though, right, five years, one
- 0:58Speaker 1: hundred and fifty million dollars. The Phillies are Hey, Pittsburgh,
- 1:01Speaker 1: fuck off with your BS offer. So Schwarber's back.
- 1:05Speaker 2: What did Jim Boden say yesterday? You got it. If
- 1:08Speaker 2: you're the Pirates, you gotta go extra years and you
- 1:09Speaker 2: gotta go five minutes and that would have been what
- 1:11Speaker 2: six years.
- 1:16Speaker 1: You're Schwarber, I throw that at you. You're at least
- 1:20Speaker 1: having a thought. Yes, they're saying, no, you're like, I.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Love John Bremberg. I'm glad I didn't get my own
- 1:27Speaker 2: Pirates Swoberg Jersey. That's a great tweet, by the way,
- 1:31Speaker 2: but come on, it's what It's what Jim Boden said.
- 1:34Speaker 2: You're like, if you're if you're the Pirates, you got
- 1:36Speaker 2: to show people that you're actually trying by signing somebody,
- 1:41Speaker 2: and you have to overpay. And but we'll let crats
- 1:44Speaker 2: talk about this because I think this is huge for
- 1:46Speaker 2: the Phillies and Topper. Topper got extended.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Also, Topper's just he's just he's He's always gonna have
- 1:52Speaker 3: a uniform on. This is a matter of who is
- 1:54Speaker 3: gonna pay him. But so I got to leave yesterday
- 1:58Speaker 3: while you guys were doing all your stuff with the
- 2:00Speaker 3: other manager's voter my guy, because I got to watch
- 2:04Speaker 3: a middle school girls basketball game and one of the
- 2:07Speaker 3: girls shot a logo three pointer that landed like fifteen
- 2:11Speaker 3: feet short of the hoop. I mean, it's middle school
- 2:14Speaker 3: girls basketball, but that's pretty much what the Pirates offered
- 2:17Speaker 3: when they offered Schwarbert a four year deal, because you
- 2:20Speaker 3: knew it was gonna be the Phillies. We're gonna make
- 2:23Speaker 3: a run, and so whatever anybody else offered, you might
- 2:28Speaker 3: as well push it. If I'm the Mets, I'm like, hey,
- 2:31Speaker 3: I'm gonna push it. You know, five years, one forty
- 2:33Speaker 3: to make the Phillies pay a little bit more so. No,
- 2:36Speaker 3: the Pirates weren't ever really in. And this is huge
- 2:40Speaker 3: for the Phillies because they get that leader that we
- 2:42Speaker 3: talked about with Jim Bowden yesterday, and they get a
- 2:45Speaker 3: guy who has made some significant adjustments at the plate.
- 2:49Speaker 3: You just hope he he and Harper and Trey Turner,
- 2:52Speaker 3: the other guys on long term contracts age gracefully because
- 2:57Speaker 3: you can only have one DH to night.
- 3:00Speaker 1: This was the target too, right Kratz. How much does
- 3:03Speaker 1: he mean to the Phillies?
- 3:06Speaker 2: I mean, he was this one. Always seemed like he
- 3:08Speaker 2: was going back to the Phillies. I'm sorry the Phillies. Listen,
- 3:12Speaker 2: the other teams would they have loved him, but if
- 3:14Speaker 2: Phillies seemed like they needed him more. And one thing
- 3:16Speaker 2: about Dave Dombrowski, John Middleton in the Philadelphia Phillies. If
- 3:19Speaker 2: they if they put their head in their mind on somebody,
- 3:21Speaker 2: they're gonna go get them. And they did it. We
- 3:23Speaker 2: saw with Bryce, we saw with Trey Turner, we saw
- 3:25Speaker 2: with Real Muta. Now will they bring real Muto back? Right,
- 3:28Speaker 2: That's now the next thing for them? Will they will
- 3:30Speaker 2: they go there?
- 3:31Speaker 1: So hold up though, I don't feel comfortable with the
- 3:35Speaker 1: same exact team again, and most of Philadelphia doesn't. Kratz
- 3:39Speaker 1: and I don't know. I know they don't have a
- 3:41Speaker 1: say Vans, But isn't the pulse in Philly that they
- 3:45Speaker 1: have to do something different and not keep rolling out
- 3:48Speaker 1: the same team. I'm not saying, gone, sign Swarb, I'm
- 3:50Speaker 1: not saying gone sign Real Muto. But at the end
- 3:52Speaker 1: of the day, when we get through the off season,
- 3:54Speaker 1: are the Phillies going to look essentially the same minus
- 3:57Speaker 1: Ranger Suarez?
- 4:00Speaker 3: I mean I said this after they lost to the
- 4:04Speaker 3: Mets the year before, and everybody's like, you can't, you
- 4:07Speaker 3: can't run the same team back?
- 4:10Speaker 1: Why not?
- 4:11Speaker 3: They're still a good team. Are they just not good
- 4:13Speaker 3: enough to win in the playoffs? Only time will tell. Well,
- 4:18Speaker 3: so far, they haven't been right they've regressed each year.
- 4:24Speaker 3: They've gone twenty two World Series, twenty three lost in
- 4:28Speaker 3: the NLCS, twenty four and twenty five lost in the NLDS.
- 4:33Speaker 3: I still believe they were the second best team in
- 4:36Speaker 3: the National League, And are you really blowing something up
- 4:40Speaker 3: to not do that? And maybe you just get maybe
- 4:42Speaker 3: you just get a maybe you get some young infusion
- 4:46Speaker 3: by you know, Justin Crawford and Aidan Miller coming in
- 4:49Speaker 3: and solidifying some positions and willing to make I still
- 4:53Speaker 3: think Dombrowski is willing to make a trade that will
- 4:57Speaker 3: be more than Nick Costianos, which you keep hearing. And
- 5:00Speaker 3: I'm unfortunately for Phillies fans, they're gonna be like, oh yeah,
- 5:03Speaker 3: Nicossiono's beat it. He's your hottest hitter in the playoffs.
- 5:07Speaker 3: If your team can't hit in the playoffs and yet
- 5:09Speaker 3: you're getting you want to get rid of your best
- 5:11Speaker 3: hitter in the playoffs. Just be careful what you wish for,
- 5:14Speaker 3: is all I got to say.
- 5:16Speaker 2: As a fan.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Well, he's gone. I think that the public messaging from
- 5:20Speaker 1: them has been that he's gone. Even if they have
- 5:22Speaker 1: to just do a buyout and a team signs him
- 5:25Speaker 1: for a league minimum deal. I think a team will
- 5:27Speaker 1: trade for him and take on a million bucks or two.
- 5:30Speaker 1: And we talked about it in yesterday show. People want
- 5:32Speaker 1: to backtrack to that. But I am very against rolling
- 5:35Speaker 1: out the same team each year. I'm very against it.
- 5:38Speaker 2: The last year something and they brought in some different
- 5:41Speaker 2: people last year. Yeah, I think they ran out the
- 5:43Speaker 2: exact same team.
- 5:46Speaker 1: I mean, the lineup's been a flub in the playoffs
- 5:48Speaker 1: for the last couple of years.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Yeah, but I don't know. I guess I don't know.
- 5:53Speaker 2: I don't know. I kind of disagree with you that
- 5:56Speaker 2: I don't either. I think that this team has been
- 5:59Speaker 2: really good in the seas, but they've also twenty three
- 6:03Speaker 2: or the year they played the Diamondbacks, Come on, they
- 6:09Speaker 2: should have won. They were up what three to one
- 6:11Speaker 2: in that series. Yeah, they should have won that series.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Twenty two day, you can make an argument they should
- 6:16Speaker 2: have won the World Series. I know the Astros did,
- 6:18Speaker 2: but they were up in that series. They got no
- 6:20Speaker 2: hit and just kind of fell apart.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Twenty great, but I'm saying here was my thing craft
- 6:27Speaker 1: you can vouch for me.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Twenty five they ran into the Dodgers, which everyone said
- 6:31Speaker 2: was the world series.
- 6:32Speaker 1: No doubt, no doubt, it's gotta try something else.
- 6:35Speaker 3: I know.
- 6:35Speaker 2: It's just so.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Why why, Scott, Why do we gotta try something else?
- 6:40Speaker 1: They're getting shut down in the playoffs. They're getting they're
- 6:43Speaker 1: getting pitched to, and they're getting shut down. And I
- 6:45Speaker 1: said this at the beginning of last season and the
- 6:47Speaker 1: last offseason. You remember, I was like, the Phillies feel
- 6:50Speaker 1: like a great regular season team to me, and it
- 6:53Speaker 1: happened to a t And I get it. They weren't
- 6:56Speaker 1: getting through the Dodgers, okay, and they gave them a
- 6:58Speaker 1: you know, okay fight. But I think when something happens
- 7:02Speaker 1: multiple times to a team like this that has a
- 7:05Speaker 1: winning window of players that will eventually close.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Three is called maybe they beat the Dodgers in their
- 7:12Speaker 2: celebrating World series.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Like the players, I'm okay, I got it. The core.
- 7:17Speaker 1: I love Schwarber they.
- 7:20Speaker 5: Did they had that was helpful, but he got more
- 7:28Speaker 5: of that. And also they had uh Wes will Wilson
- 7:31Speaker 5: and all the bench guys were different. They get stubby
- 7:34Speaker 5: and they brought in the Marshawn back up guys, so
- 7:37Speaker 5: they they made changes.
- 7:38Speaker 2: But you're not trading Harper Turner remote to shore boom. Well,
- 7:43Speaker 2: they mean they tried to boom. Costianos was off the
- 7:45Speaker 2: table until now right, So they had all these guys
- 7:48Speaker 2: Marshes there, their bullpen is they the bullpen was changed.
- 7:51Speaker 2: They completely flipped the bullpen.
- 7:54Speaker 1: I would get a fresh outfield, which sounds like they
- 7:58Speaker 1: might do to an extent that. It also could involve
- 8:01Speaker 1: Justin Crawford, who I think is ready from the minor
- 8:03Speaker 1: league system. That's Carlson. And then I mean they're trying
- 8:08Speaker 1: to move Bom. He's a movable player. They're just looking
- 8:11Speaker 1: at who would replace him. They're not going to necessarily
- 8:14Speaker 1: hit the free agent mark and be like Alex Bregman,
- 8:16Speaker 1: come on down.
- 8:18Speaker 3: I mean, obviously, if I think if Schwarber wasn't in
- 8:21Speaker 3: the fold, yes, that's what you'd look at. You'd look
- 8:24Speaker 3: at another guy who's like a leader, somebody who's gonna
- 8:27Speaker 3: be out there every single day, replaced Bam, you know
- 8:29Speaker 3: that kind of thing. Somebody replace Costiano's probably not going
- 8:34Speaker 3: to be Tucker as much as they pursued him. You know.
- 8:37Speaker 3: With with Schwarber in the fold, it seems like they're
- 8:39Speaker 3: gonna bring real Muto back. My thing is, you can't
- 8:44Speaker 3: just go based on Okay, we didn't we didn't get
- 8:48Speaker 3: the job done. I know that's how everybody wants to
- 8:51Speaker 3: look at it. But when you're building your team, you say,
- 8:54Speaker 3: what did we not do well in the playoffs? Okay,
- 8:57Speaker 3: we didn't score runs. But who was the best pitcher
- 9:00Speaker 3: in the playoffs? Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Okay had I think they
- 9:06Speaker 3: scored three or four runs off of them in one inning?
- 9:09Speaker 3: Guy that was unhittable for the rest of the league
- 9:11Speaker 3: in the playoffs. H you know, how's our starting rotation.
- 9:15Speaker 3: You're gonna get Wheeler back? When what's he gonna look like?
- 9:20Speaker 3: Don't know, pretty solid rotation. To me, it's the bullpen
- 9:23Speaker 3: that needs to be able to hold these games down
- 9:25Speaker 3: because they're going to play the Dodgers, and the Dodgers
- 9:29Speaker 3: you can't give them an inch because they'll take a mile.
- 9:31Speaker 3: And it's just it's one of those things they have
- 9:34Speaker 3: to To me, I don't think it's a big huge
- 9:38Speaker 3: change because the team is really good and they make
- 9:41Speaker 3: adjustments as a lineup together. They just have to do
- 9:45Speaker 3: it in the playoffs like the Dodgers did two years ago.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Let's finish with this. Did other teams mess up by
- 9:52Speaker 1: not pursuing Kyle Schwarber further, I mean, yes.
- 9:58Speaker 2: But overpay. They're gonna overpay. He was gonna go back
- 10:02Speaker 2: to Philly. Okay, he's happy in Philly. He's got a
- 10:04Speaker 2: great place in Philly. He's got a chance to become
- 10:07Speaker 2: legendary status in Philly. So you're gonna have to overpay
- 10:10Speaker 2: to get him out of Philly. And they weren't got
- 10:11Speaker 2: his friends there. Yeah, he's got everything there. So yeah, No,
- 10:15Speaker 2: did ever the teams mess up? No, yes, but no
- 10:18Speaker 2: because they probably weren't gonna get him anyways.
- 10:24Speaker 1: We from reports, and there's all kinds of reports leading
- 10:27Speaker 1: up to this signing. Over the past week. I saw
- 10:31Speaker 1: teams aside from Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. We saw the Mets
- 10:36Speaker 1: pop up yesterday I left, but we saw the Orioles
- 10:40Speaker 1: pop up. You saw that one, right, And I was like, okay, yeah,
- 10:47Speaker 1: but it would have been a great fit.
- 10:48Speaker 2: No, it's easy for all these teams to pop up,
- 10:50Speaker 2: but it's really hard for teams to put the pen
- 10:53Speaker 2: to paper and put it down an actual offer. Some
- 10:56Speaker 2: of these offers are when you're a free agent, they'll
- 10:59Speaker 2: be like, well, what if we offered you this, and
- 11:01Speaker 2: then your agent's like, is that a real offer? And
- 11:03Speaker 2: they're like no, no, no, no, But what if we
- 11:05Speaker 2: did offer you that? Well, unless you make that offer,
- 11:08Speaker 2: I can't give you a yes or no. But what
- 11:10Speaker 2: if we what?
- 11:12Speaker 4: What if?
- 11:12Speaker 2: What if the pirates said we'll give you four years
- 11:14Speaker 2: one hundred in kylege Robber's agent was like, is that
- 11:17Speaker 2: a real offer? And they're like no, but just we're
- 11:20Speaker 2: just so we can say that we made you a
- 11:22Speaker 2: quote offer, right, Like that's it's not a real offer.
- 11:26Speaker 2: It's like in college football when they're like, oh, I
- 11:29Speaker 2: have an offer from Miami. But sometimes kids have offers,
- 11:32Speaker 2: but they're not committable offers. Right. You can't just oh,
- 11:36Speaker 2: I'm going to Miami. They offered me. Well, we offered you,
- 11:38Speaker 2: but there's conditions on it. Right. It's the same thing
- 11:40Speaker 2: in here a free agency, we're going to give you.
- 11:43Speaker 2: What if we gave you this offer, would you take it? Well?
- 11:47Speaker 2: Is that a real offer?
- 11:48Speaker 3: No?
- 11:48Speaker 2: Okay? But then I can't say yes or no.
- 11:50Speaker 3: What a great What a great analogy. I hope kids
- 11:53Speaker 3: who are in high school and parents of high school
- 11:55Speaker 3: kids or parents of kids, people that know kids who
- 11:59Speaker 3: are in tall and are going through the college process.
- 12:03Speaker 3: The only offers that you actually have are ones that
- 12:06Speaker 3: are penned to paper. This is what you're offering, not.
- 12:12Speaker 2: How does this look for you? Does this?
- 12:14Speaker 3: What would this do for you? It's like, oh, well
- 12:17Speaker 3: that would be great. Well, actually, hang on, hang on,
- 12:19Speaker 3: hang on, hangout. We're not offering quite yet. That's a
- 12:22Speaker 3: good analogy.
- 12:24Speaker 1: The Reds should have been the team for me, I
- 12:26Speaker 1: never thought, but they're not.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Going to pay that and we had Tito on here yesterday.
- 12:29Speaker 1: They should have been the team.
- 12:30Speaker 2: They should have been, but they're not going to do it.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Though.
- 12:34Speaker 2: You have to understand, like it's easy to say the
- 12:36Speaker 2: red should have been this team, but again, the Reds
- 12:38Speaker 2: were gonna have to overpay and they weren't going to overpay.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Every How many times have we had this conversation on
- 12:43Speaker 2: this show. How many general managers and presidents of baseball
- 12:46Speaker 2: ops and owners are risk averse and they don't want
- 12:49Speaker 2: to be that guy that, oh I might change the
- 12:51Speaker 2: market for other teams by overspending, even though that's the
- 12:54Speaker 2: guy I want. And college war would fit perfectly on
- 12:56Speaker 2: the Reds from Ohio. Teach some of the kids how
- 13:00Speaker 2: to play all that, but they would have to probably overspend,
- 13:03Speaker 2: and they don't want to be the team that breaks
- 13:05Speaker 2: the market.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Oh well, hello, more breaking news.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Why would do these guys back to back?
- 13:16Speaker 1: Scott breaking news. Edwin Diaz to the Dodgers three years,
- 13:23Speaker 1: sixty nine million dollars giggey. Wow. The Mets decided Devin
- 13:28Speaker 1: Williams for three point fifty ish over Edwin Diaz for
- 13:33Speaker 1: three seventy ish. Wow. So let's first start with the Dodgers.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Let's first start with terrible.
- 13:41Speaker 2: So Dodgers a good thing. They don't have a salary count.
- 13:44Speaker 2: I'm just gonna say that.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Dave Roberts wants to cap the team, but right now
- 13:49Speaker 1: he can't, so he is forced to get better.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Yeah, another great player. And by the way, uh, Kyle
- 13:55Speaker 2: schwar reverse Edwin Diaz. Those numbers are not good. Have
- 13:58Speaker 2: ever seen those numbers?
- 14:01Speaker 4: Oh?
- 14:01Speaker 2: No, Well, in the regular season, I think he's over
- 14:03Speaker 2: ten with eight punches, and then if you go to
- 14:04Speaker 2: the playoffs, he's oh for a lot more with more punchies.
- 14:08Speaker 2: It's like one of the craziest things of all time.
- 14:11Speaker 2: But I mean, listen to Dodgers. Ain't messing around. They've
- 14:16Speaker 2: won two in a row. What was the one thing
- 14:17Speaker 2: that we said, who? What did they have? Bullpen and
- 14:22Speaker 2: high leverage? What guy in the ninth inning closer? Guess
- 14:25Speaker 2: what they just signed for three years? The guy, the guy,
- 14:28Speaker 2: the best closer we got going probably right now, right.
- 14:30Speaker 2: I mean, you can make arguments somewhere here or there,
- 14:32Speaker 2: but one of the top three closers in baseball strikeout
- 14:36Speaker 2: stuff dependable other than if he plays in the WBC,
- 14:39Speaker 2: which I'm sure the Dodgers probably had a conversation. We're like,
- 14:42Speaker 2: we're not gonna let you do that this year. But
- 14:46Speaker 2: this is the guy, I mean perfect. Their lineups pretty
- 14:49Speaker 2: much all back, depending on what they want to do.
- 14:51Speaker 2: If they want to find a center fielder. Sorry an the.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Air people trying to get autographs from AJ but can't make.
- 15:03Speaker 2: This this right. So the Dodgers needed a closer. They
- 15:07Speaker 2: went out and get them. They're they're there. Their position
- 15:10Speaker 2: players are pretty much said. Other than if they do
- 15:11Speaker 2: something with Teo or find a center field or whatever,
- 15:14Speaker 2: they figure out their one thing is. But this is
- 15:16Speaker 2: the move their snow glass, snow Domamoto, Sazaki, boom right,
- 15:21Speaker 2: and then they're bullpend out. They get healthy Tanner Scott
- 15:24Speaker 2: and they get Cope, Kopek comes back and all these
- 15:27Speaker 2: guys that they also have training trying bounces back like
- 15:30Speaker 2: this team just way, way, way better. I'm sorry fans,
- 15:34Speaker 2: but guess who's number one of my power rankings.
- 15:37Speaker 1: The Dodgers Edwin Diaz had any ridiculous year or two.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Especially when they're number one the whole year and they
- 15:43Speaker 2: went and everyone says, I hate the Dodgers, even though
- 15:45Speaker 2: there's still number one for and there's still gonna be
- 15:48Speaker 2: number one.
- 15:48Speaker 1: Crats we're here, and I feel like Dave Roberts, Brandon Gomes,
- 15:51Speaker 1: et cetera, the manager of the GM.
- 15:54Speaker 2: I saw Brandon Gohmes justey, he didn't even mention this
- 15:56Speaker 2: to me. I'm mad at him.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Well there they've been publicly saying we're pretty much good.
- 16:01Speaker 1: We don't have to do anything. If something falls in
- 16:03Speaker 1: our lap, we'll do it. I think they evaluated the
- 16:06Speaker 1: marketplace and they were like, hold up, best closer, flash
- 16:09Speaker 1: reliever by far on the market is not going for
- 16:13Speaker 1: five years, not going for four years. They love a
- 16:16Speaker 1: short term, high average annual value value deal. This is
- 16:19Speaker 1: exactly up their alley. So as someone has said, like
- 16:22Speaker 1: they hang around the backboard and then they're just ready
- 16:25Speaker 1: to scoop up a rebound. I mean, this is a
- 16:28Speaker 1: no brainer for them.
- 16:30Speaker 3: Everybody thinks they're hanging around waiting for rebounds and they're
- 16:33Speaker 3: pushing people out of the way. This was this was
- 16:37Speaker 3: out there for anybody. Like the fact that Devin Williams
- 16:42Speaker 3: got three years is why the Mets, you know, risk
- 16:45Speaker 3: averse all that stuff that we've already talked about, Well
- 16:48Speaker 3: we can't get we can't get Edwin dis because he's
- 16:50Speaker 3: probably gonna get four or five years because hater got
- 16:54Speaker 3: five years ninety five, Oh wait, you got three years.
- 17:00Speaker 3: It because in no way they sat there and they go,
- 17:03Speaker 3: we didn't like what Devin Williams gave us last year.
- 17:05Speaker 3: We didn't like what he gave us the last five years.
- 17:09Speaker 3: Is the second most dominant closer in the game. Like
- 17:12Speaker 3: I just I just have a hard time believing that
- 17:17Speaker 3: they they valued the market the way that it ended
- 17:20Speaker 3: up turning out because of the fact that they went
- 17:23Speaker 3: to somebody commodity and Devin Williams they don't even know.
- 17:27Speaker 3: And the Dodgers are like sure, like yeah, we're we're
- 17:31Speaker 3: breaking the aav for a closer. No reliever has gotten
- 17:36Speaker 3: this much money per year. We're actually paying him less
- 17:40Speaker 3: than we're paying Tanner Scott. Uh, Edwin Diaz is way
- 17:45Speaker 3: better than what Tanner Scott was when we signed him.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Yeah, a one to six three ERA thirty eight percent
- 17:52Speaker 1: strikeout percentage. So he had an opt out. He opted
- 17:56Speaker 1: out of the final two years thirty eight. Okay, we'll
- 18:00Speaker 1: finish up here.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Uh, two years thirty eight million was left for DS.
- 18:05Speaker 2: You got three six opted out, so you.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Got another year and another or a thirty one million
- 18:10Speaker 1: for him, So three years sixty nine. But I'm just
- 18:14Speaker 1: shocked that the Mets made that decision that.
- 18:16Speaker 2: I'm shocked the Mets didn't bring him back. Now, what
- 18:18Speaker 2: does this mean for a Lonzo? Is the question?
- 18:20Speaker 1: Click, maybe they're not bringing the band back together.
- 18:23Speaker 3: The better be to knee. Clearly, you better bend to knee.
- 18:26Speaker 3: That's what it means.
- 18:28Speaker 2: Who better been the knee? The Mets?
- 18:30Speaker 3: No people to whom fan favorite, fan favorite, the guy
- 18:37Speaker 3: that everybody every year you heard the media at the
- 18:40Speaker 3: bbwa's always say, oh, yeah, you know, this guy should win.
- 18:45Speaker 3: You know, favorite favorite player in the clubhouse every year
- 18:48Speaker 3: by the media. Edwin DS closer EXTRAORDINAI pushed them to
- 18:53Speaker 3: where they were last year and the year before, like
- 18:57Speaker 3: was has.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Killed it for him gone.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Pine Alonzo might have to just say, yes, this is
- 19:04Speaker 3: how much the Mets are offering, and I'm gonna have
- 19:06Speaker 3: to sign there because they're clearly not going to go
- 19:07Speaker 3: over what they view his worth is.
- 19:17Speaker 1: This is the best inside scoop because he is in
- 19:19Speaker 1: person with us Ken Rosenthal at d Senior inside running
- 19:22Speaker 1: around the winter meetings right now. Good to see you, Ken.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Right to business because we had not one but two
- 19:26Speaker 1: big moves this morning. I'll give you dealer's choice. Which
- 19:29Speaker 1: one would you like to start with?
- 19:30Speaker 4: Daz for sure, okay?
- 19:31Speaker 6: And I only say that because the shore burmove was
- 19:34Speaker 6: largely expected, even with all the action on him. The
- 19:38Speaker 6: Fillers were the favorite from the very beginning, and it
- 19:40Speaker 6: was just a question of when do we get done,
- 19:42Speaker 6: how it get done, what the money would be, and
- 19:44Speaker 6: they went to a level that most guys who project
- 19:48Speaker 6: this stuff projected five years, one hundred and fifty million.
- 19:52Speaker 6: Daz was a stunner, and everyone knew that the Dodgers
- 19:56Speaker 6: were in on relievers, late inning relievers. But the feeling
- 19:59Speaker 6: was is that only on a one year deal or
- 20:02Speaker 6: short term. They wouldn't necessarily want to qualifying off for
- 20:05Speaker 6: guy lose two draft picks. Well, they went to three years,
- 20:09Speaker 6: they lost two draft picks and a million dollars in
- 20:11Speaker 6: international bonus money. And they're acting like the Dodgers always act,
- 20:15Speaker 6: So we probably shouldn't have been surprised by.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Any of this.
- 20:18Speaker 1: That's really good and they don't care.
- 20:20Speaker 4: They don't care like a million dollars.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Don't know. I don't know what is there because he
- 20:25Speaker 1: keeps finding players winning.
- 20:27Speaker 4: Yes, the purpose of the sport is to win.
- 20:28Speaker 6: And I know this will probably evoke a fresh round
- 20:31Speaker 6: of the Dodgers are ruining baseball, But if you remember,
- 20:35Speaker 6: it went down to the ninth inning of the actually
- 20:38Speaker 6: beyond the ninth inning of the last game of the
- 20:40Speaker 6: World Series, and they were two outs away from losing
- 20:43Speaker 6: that suckers, so hey. Obviously they had made some bullpen
- 20:48Speaker 6: moves last year they did not work out so well
- 20:50Speaker 6: for them.
- 20:50Speaker 4: Edwin Diez is much more of.
- 20:52Speaker 6: An established guy than Tanner Scott was and Kirby Yates
- 20:55Speaker 6: was older of course, but it's a huge move for them, obviously,
- 20:59Speaker 6: and what they like about their team is Not only
- 21:02Speaker 6: do they have the starters from last year coming back,
- 21:04Speaker 6: but they've got some younger starters coming off injuries. Gavin Stone,
- 21:08Speaker 6: River Ryan and Kyle Hurt. These guys have had varying
- 21:13Speaker 6: levels of success in the big leagues already, and now
- 21:16Speaker 6: they're entering and ran thering the picture for LA.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Are there deferrals in this contract? Do we know anything
- 21:22Speaker 2: about that?
- 21:22Speaker 4: We don't know for sure yet, but I expected there
- 21:24Speaker 4: will be deferrals.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Okay, so the Dodgers are trying to make moves before
- 21:27Speaker 2: the CBA happens and whatever changes come up. But also,
- 21:32Speaker 2: isn't this the one hole they really have the Dodgers,
- 21:35Speaker 2: and they filled.
- 21:35Speaker 4: It the hole and I expect they'll fill that, but a.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Bigger need honestly, that was we saw the way the
- 21:42Speaker 2: playoffs they had to throw Sazaki out there. Sure, right,
- 21:44Speaker 2: so this this fills another major hole. They're ruining baseball
- 21:49Speaker 2: can and their manager wants a salary cap. Well, guess
- 21:51Speaker 2: what if you have a salary cap, you ain't probably
- 21:53Speaker 2: getting Edwin Diaz? Right, So how do we here's something
- 21:57Speaker 2: to keep doing this?
- 21:58Speaker 6: I think you're right Aja about they want to get
- 22:01Speaker 6: this done before whatever new restrictions come into play. In
- 22:04Speaker 6: the next CBA come into play, there might not be
- 22:07Speaker 6: a salary cap, but there probably will be. It's not
- 22:09Speaker 6: a salary cap stricter luxury tax penalties, thresholds that maybe
- 22:14Speaker 6: that would be difficult for.
- 22:15Speaker 4: Them, whatever the case might be.
- 22:17Speaker 6: So, yeah, there is strategy in doing that right now
- 22:20Speaker 6: and trying to get all you can before the CBA strikes.
- 22:25Speaker 4: But even if there is a salary cap, we've seen this.
- 22:29Speaker 4: The Dodgers are one of the smartest teams in the game.
- 22:31Speaker 4: They're still gonna be good. They're not gonna be that limited.
- 22:34Speaker 6: And some of the bad teams are still gonna be
- 22:37Speaker 6: bad because they're not that creative, they're not that smart
- 22:39Speaker 6: in the way they go about it. So I said
- 22:42Speaker 6: this before, I'll say it again. A cap would address
- 22:45Speaker 6: some things, for sure, and maybe in a way that
- 22:47Speaker 6: would benefit the game, but it's not going to change
- 22:50Speaker 6: the fortunes of franchises automatically. If you're not good in
- 22:54Speaker 6: the NFL with a cap, you're generally not good.
- 22:56Speaker 4: The Jets, the Cleveland Browns, they're not.
- 22:58Speaker 1: Good, thank you.
- 22:59Speaker 6: So I don't know that the competitive balance question is
- 23:03Speaker 6: really all that fair here.
- 23:05Speaker 4: It's obviously part of it. And I've said this before,
- 23:08Speaker 4: I'll say it again.
- 23:09Speaker 6: The sport needs to do a better job of shrinking
- 23:12Speaker 6: the payroll disparity.
- 23:14Speaker 4: And there are ways to do that beside a cap.
- 23:16Speaker 6: But at the same time, let's not pretend it's going
- 23:19Speaker 6: to be a panacea for some of these teams that
- 23:22Speaker 6: aren't competitive.
- 23:24Speaker 3: Can you can you compare and then move forward on
- 23:28Speaker 3: Robert Swarez? Can you compare Devin Williams contract that he signed,
- 23:33Speaker 3: which I thought was maybe a little short to Edwin's
- 23:37Speaker 3: contract that he signed, and then moving forward, what does
- 23:40Speaker 3: this mean for Robert Swarez? Who's left in the market
- 23:43Speaker 3: and is he going to get just a tear down?
- 23:46Speaker 3: Is he in between Devin Williams? Where's that market playing
- 23:49Speaker 3: out at for him?
- 23:51Speaker 6: I'm not exactly sure, Eric, where it plays out in
- 23:54Speaker 6: terms of the dollars.
- 23:55Speaker 4: Is he more highly regarded than Devin Williams. I'm not sure.
- 23:59Speaker 6: Little old and a guy that is really good, obviously,
- 24:04Speaker 6: but Devin Williams is seen as an extreme talent. Dodgers
- 24:08Speaker 6: ran on him. Now you ask me which teams that
- 24:11Speaker 6: I can speculate on. The Mets still want another late
- 24:15Speaker 6: inning guy. The Braves still want another late inning guy,
- 24:18Speaker 6: and there are a number of other teams as well,
- 24:20Speaker 6: the Tigers, all kinds of teams looking for that kind
- 24:23Speaker 6: of stopper at the end of games.
- 24:26Speaker 4: So Suarez is going to do well.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Now.
- 24:28Speaker 6: I don't know if he does better than Devin Williams
- 24:29Speaker 6: or not, but he's going to do well.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Okay, let's get to the Mets side of the equation here,
- 24:34Speaker 1: and I think this ties into the Dodgers. They looked
- 24:36Speaker 1: at Diaz and said, wait, three years, not five, not
- 24:40Speaker 1: four to three years for sixty nine. Sure, we'll play ball.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Anthony Dicomo, who covers the Mets MLB, said he was
- 24:46Speaker 1: told the Mets offered three years sixty six with slight
- 24:49Speaker 1: deferrals and had room to improve that number. But he
- 24:52Speaker 1: just set up, got three years sixty nine, and I'm gone,
- 24:55Speaker 1: how does that happen? When Williams? I mean, I know,
- 24:58Speaker 1: fifty versus seventy million, it's something, But for the Mets,
- 25:02Speaker 1: it shouldn't be much. And I think most people would
- 25:04Speaker 1: be like, I'm gonna take the commodity I know has
- 25:06Speaker 1: pitched well.
- 25:06Speaker 6: Here, I just saw a Mets fan in the lobby
- 25:08Speaker 6: and he said to me, how can the Mets get
- 25:10Speaker 6: out bid for a guy that they supposedly.
- 25:13Speaker 4: Wanted with Steve Cohen as their owner. Fair question.
- 25:17Speaker 6: And if you're at sixty six and you got beat
- 25:19Speaker 6: out by sixty nine, obviously Edwin wanted to set a
- 25:22Speaker 6: mark and the Mets didn't get there.
- 25:24Speaker 4: So we'd heard originally that.
- 25:27Speaker 6: Edwin wanted five years similar to what he had before,
- 25:29Speaker 6: five years one oh two.
- 25:31Speaker 4: But that's twenty million avy.
- 25:32Speaker 6: This is twenty three again before deferrals, which will bring
- 25:35Speaker 6: it down.
- 25:36Speaker 4: But the Mets are curious right now. They don't seem
- 25:41Speaker 4: to be that heavy on anybody.
- 25:43Speaker 6: They didn't get Shorebured. I don't expect didn't expect them
- 25:46Speaker 6: to get Shoreburt. Are they hot on Alonso? It doesn't
- 25:49Speaker 6: seem like it need a left fielder, They need starting pitching,
- 25:52Speaker 6: and they don't want to go long term on any
- 25:54Speaker 6: starting pitcher, which I kind of get.
- 25:56Speaker 4: The market's not great those guys we are available, But
- 26:00Speaker 4: all right, what's your answer? That's the question.
- 26:02Speaker 2: David terns. He finds value and he's going to have
- 26:06Speaker 2: to that's what he's supposed to be the best at. Right, Yeah,
- 26:10Speaker 2: what about Schwarber. I know everyone expected him to go
- 26:13Speaker 2: back to Philly, and I'm happy for him, and I'm
- 26:15Speaker 2: happy for Philly. But my question is, we heard pirates,
- 26:18Speaker 2: and we heard Reds and heard all these others. But
- 26:21Speaker 2: was that serious, because this is what I was serious.
- 26:24Speaker 2: But the pirates they go, okay, four years one hundred.
- 26:26Speaker 2: They knew that wasn't going to get it done. Is
- 26:28Speaker 2: it the offer where hey, if we all ken, if
- 26:30Speaker 2: I offer you ten years one hundred, will you sign
- 26:33Speaker 2: with the athletic? Yes, you would, okay? But but then
- 26:38Speaker 2: they say, oh, we were just kidding. That's not a
- 26:40Speaker 2: serious offer. Just tell us if you would, right. So
- 26:42Speaker 2: to me, that's what it seemed like because as I've
- 26:44Speaker 2: been a free agent and teams come to you and say, hey,
- 26:47Speaker 2: if I offer you this, will you take it? Well,
- 26:49Speaker 2: I'm not giving you that answer because it's just a
- 26:50Speaker 2: real offer, and they and they were like, no, no, no,
- 26:52Speaker 2: it's not a real offer. So were these real offers,
- 26:55Speaker 2: because I they.
- 26:56Speaker 4: Were real offers, but were they actually were they going
- 26:58Speaker 4: to be?
- 26:59Speaker 2: Yes?
- 26:59Speaker 6: And I had someone in the industry say to me
- 27:02Speaker 6: yesterday he thinks what the pirates were doing with Tarburg
- 27:04Speaker 6: was performative, and I understand that.
- 27:07Speaker 4: But if you're the Pittsburgh Pirates and you throw out
- 27:10Speaker 4: a four year deal for.
- 27:11Speaker 6: One hundred and twenty million when you haven't paid a
- 27:13Speaker 6: free agent more than thirty nine million in your history, Okay,
- 27:16Speaker 6: maybe you're not winning, but it's certainly a deal that
- 27:21Speaker 6: is in the ballpark. It's the same aav he ultimately
- 27:24Speaker 6: got from the Phillies, but with one more year. So
- 27:28Speaker 6: I don't know that we can just rip the Pirate.
- 27:29Speaker 6: I heard what Boden said yesterday. I didn't care for it.
- 27:32Speaker 6: Oh they should have offered six years. They're doing more
- 27:35Speaker 6: than they've ever done. They're signaling to the market, to
- 27:38Speaker 6: the other players that they're serious. So sure was it.
- 27:42Speaker 4: Gonna get it done? No? Were the Red's gonna get
- 27:44Speaker 4: it done or be the high bidder? Probably not. They
- 27:47Speaker 4: knew that from the very beginning. The Pirates knew that too,
- 27:50Speaker 4: But they took their shots.
- 27:51Speaker 6: And I don't know that we can sit here and
- 27:53Speaker 6: rip these teams for never taking shots, and then rip
- 27:56Speaker 6: them when they do take shots, even if they're not
- 27:58Speaker 6: obviously the best footfall.
- 28:00Speaker 1: But then go after the guys you think you have
- 28:02Speaker 1: a fair shot at like they're going to do that.
- 28:05Speaker 1: You know, let's just.
- 28:06Speaker 4: Ada la court, chuck it behind. You know.
- 28:08Speaker 6: I assume in the pirates case, they're going to sign
- 28:11Speaker 6: some players. They're gonna have to overpay, probably and it's
- 28:15Speaker 6: not gonna necessarily be pretty, but.
- 28:18Speaker 2: They though they would have to overpay to get them
- 28:22Speaker 2: to prove that they're seriously because you was not going
- 28:24Speaker 2: to go for even if they but you think they
- 28:27Speaker 2: were getting if they ever if they went six point eight.
- 28:30Speaker 1: It makes that's why we have these guys on like,
- 28:31Speaker 1: it makes them think for it. To me, it's like, oh,
- 28:34Speaker 1: they're still a joke, that's all that. That was my thing.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Everybody was hearing or you're reading he's gonna get five
- 28:39Speaker 1: years and then this team gives him a four year offer.
- 28:43Speaker 4: I don't know. I don't see it that way.
- 28:45Speaker 6: I see it as they're finally serious and no one
- 28:49Speaker 6: was saying they're going to get the guy, but they
- 28:52Speaker 6: were making an attempt. And I think it is a
- 28:54Speaker 6: signal to the other teams or the other players in
- 28:56Speaker 6: the market, I should say, and even teams that were
- 28:59Speaker 6: so we want to surround Paul Skimes with better talent,
- 29:02Speaker 6: and obviously it wasn't going to work here, but we'll
- 29:06Speaker 6: see where it goes.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Do you think they're gonna use the money somewhere else?
- 29:10Speaker 4: I don't know if you'll use all one twenty or
- 29:12Speaker 4: whatever it is, but I do believe they're going to spend.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Okay, now at the higher level, I'm gonna ask you
- 29:17Speaker 2: the next question. We had this conversation yesterday. Why all
- 29:21Speaker 2: of a sudden the Pirates spending And don't say Paul
- 29:23Speaker 2: Skins because this reminds us of the Oakland Athletics who
- 29:26Speaker 2: are now the Sacramento Athletics or are soon going to
- 29:28Speaker 2: be the Vegas Athletics told by Major League Baseball you
- 29:31Speaker 2: have to spend money. Did Major League Baseball go to
- 29:33Speaker 2: the Pirates and say, you guys have to spend money.
- 29:35Speaker 2: We're gonna get a grievance because you're not spending anything.
- 29:37Speaker 4: Aj I've written about this. I know you haven't read it,
- 29:40Speaker 4: of course not.
- 29:41Speaker 6: Can it be a motivator, yeah, can it be a motivator, yes,
- 29:45Speaker 6: I don't know exactly what's motivating them. What should be
- 29:48Speaker 6: motivating them is they have the best picture on the
- 29:50Speaker 6: planet for four years more and they've got to do something.
- 29:54Speaker 6: And the owner is ripped in Pittsburgh all the time,
- 29:57Speaker 6: rightly so, and it's time for them to act in
- 30:01Speaker 6: a different way than they have before. And no one
- 30:04Speaker 6: expects them to act like the Dodgers. We'll get that,
- 30:07Speaker 6: we all get what the industry is and disparities, but
- 30:11Speaker 6: there are teams at their level that try, they don't try,
- 30:15Speaker 6: or haven't tried. So there are a lot of eyes
- 30:19Speaker 6: on them right now to see what they do and
- 30:20Speaker 6: to see if they back it up, because as with
- 30:23Speaker 6: the Tigers in schoobl it's only one year. With schoobl
- 30:27Speaker 6: it's opportunities that don't come a long often. You don't
- 30:29Speaker 6: have a Terrek Schooble on your staff for very many
- 30:33Speaker 6: or many teams don't get that opportunity. The Pirates don't.
- 30:36Speaker 6: Teams don't get that opportunity to have a Paul Skians.
- 30:38Speaker 6: When you have that guy, you better fire, you better try.
- 30:42Speaker 1: So that takes me to the article you wrote yesterday
- 30:45Speaker 1: about the Tigers. What's going on with them? Are they
- 30:47Speaker 1: going to trade him? And if not, are they going
- 30:48Speaker 1: to go for it this year?
- 30:50Speaker 6: I don't expect that they're going to trade him, and
- 30:54Speaker 6: I don't know how hard they're going to go for it.
- 30:56Speaker 6: Scott Harris, their president baseball Operations, is pretty disciplined, and
- 31:01Speaker 6: I would say a borderline rigid in the way he
- 31:03Speaker 6: goes about it. He's risk averse in my opinion. I
- 31:06Speaker 6: know he would disagree. But you've got Trek Schoobel for
- 31:11Speaker 6: one more year. You've gone to the playoffs two straight
- 31:13Speaker 6: years with him.
- 31:13Speaker 4: He's a big part of that. He's won two straight.
- 31:15Speaker 6: Cy Young Awards. Why wouldn't you put your best foot
- 31:18Speaker 6: forward here? I'm not saying do anything stupid, but what
- 31:21Speaker 6: does that mean? It means going out and getting another
- 31:24Speaker 6: bat and a number two starter behind him and fixing
- 31:26Speaker 6: your bullpen.
- 31:27Speaker 4: That's what That's a lot though, it's a lot.
- 31:28Speaker 2: But where did Scott Harris come from?
- 31:30Speaker 4: Chicago Cubs? And they in San Francisco Giants?
- 31:33Speaker 2: And what are they? Both? Those organizations very averse.
- 31:35Speaker 4: To spending and risk and risk pretty much the entire
- 31:40Speaker 4: industry is averse.
- 31:41Speaker 2: We've had this. That's a whole different conversation, but you
- 31:43Speaker 2: see what I'm saying, Scott Harris came from, especially the Cubs.
- 31:46Speaker 2: The Cubs won't go out and make that huge splash
- 31:48Speaker 2: move right right? The Giants with he was under far Han, right,
- 31:51Speaker 2: so he was kind of tall. Hey you can win
- 31:53Speaker 2: if you find little tiny margins that is, I mean. See,
- 31:57Speaker 2: so that's my question with the Times.
- 31:58Speaker 6: Scott Harris's point would be, hey, we've done really well.
- 32:03Speaker 6: We've made the playoffs too straight, here's what the game
- 32:06Speaker 6: and absolutely, but the Tigers are not the Guardians.
- 32:10Speaker 4: That's a big old market and it.
- 32:12Speaker 6: Seems to me they had an owner once upon a time,
- 32:16Speaker 6: the late Mike Gillich, who did not even act like
- 32:18Speaker 6: they were in medium sized market.
- 32:20Speaker 4: He spent.
- 32:21Speaker 6: It's an owner's choice in many cases too, to do
- 32:25Speaker 6: at this level or this level. Peter Sidler, the late
- 32:27Speaker 6: Peter Siler, great example, transform that franchise by spending.
- 32:31Speaker 4: Now, they haven't won the.
- 32:32Speaker 6: World Series and they've had their problems, we all get that.
- 32:35Speaker 6: But packing that stadium, they're putting an entertaining product on
- 32:39Speaker 6: the field. It's a flawed product many times, but it's entertaining.
- 32:43Speaker 4: That's the other way.
- 32:44Speaker 1: Let me ask you about your latest ka tell Marte's trademarket.
- 32:48Speaker 1: What are you hearing and do you think he actually
- 32:50Speaker 1: gets moved? Of course the dimacks are you know, giving
- 32:52Speaker 1: you the classic anywhere they've spoken, you know, Mike Casan Oh,
- 32:56Speaker 1: you know, we'll listen on anyone. But it would take
- 32:58Speaker 1: the world if we're gonna move.
- 33:00Speaker 4: That's typical.
- 33:01Speaker 1: But what's the real situation.
- 33:05Speaker 6: My belief is they want to move him so they
- 33:07Speaker 6: can fill some of the holes that they have on
- 33:09Speaker 6: their team, and they have pitching holes right now in
- 33:12Speaker 6: particular outfield, maybe as well where Jordan Lawler's gonna end up.
- 33:17Speaker 1: It's not clear.
- 33:18Speaker 6: But as I wrote, these things take time, and they
- 33:23Speaker 6: take time. The Diamondbacks knew that three years ago they
- 33:25Speaker 6: traded var Show. It was almost Christmas Eve, but they
- 33:29Speaker 6: started those talks of the winter meetings. It's particularly complicated
- 33:32Speaker 6: in Martine's case because of all that happened last year,
- 33:35Speaker 6: the three days he missed at the after the All
- 33:38Speaker 6: Star break, when he was back in the Dominican Republic
- 33:40Speaker 6: after his home in Scott'sdale was burglarized, the article that
- 33:44Speaker 6: came out in Arizona Republic by Nick Boccoro detailing the players'
- 33:47Speaker 6: frustrations with him.
- 33:49Speaker 4: Now, if you're a team looking at.
- 33:52Speaker 6: Catel Marte, you're gonna look into this pretty heavily before
- 33:55Speaker 6: you pay that price, and that might be part of
- 33:57Speaker 6: the delay here too. So I can't predict whether he
- 34:00Speaker 6: will be traded, but if I had to bet, I
- 34:02Speaker 6: would bet yes, because tenth day of the season, his
- 34:05Speaker 6: ten and five rights kick in.
- 34:06Speaker 4: And then he has a full note trade clause.
- 34:08Speaker 1: He's the best second basement in baseball in my opinion.
- 34:11Speaker 4: Where you go, there any number of places he can go.
- 34:14Speaker 2: Give me, give me, give me two.
- 34:16Speaker 6: Boston would be one, and they've been in the in
- 34:18Speaker 6: the mix depends on Bragman. Of course, the Mets now
- 34:22Speaker 6: with Simon would not be a team Phillies. I'm sure
- 34:29Speaker 6: they're a number of teams that heard.
- 34:33Speaker 1: What about the Pirates?
- 34:34Speaker 5: They can't what about that's that's the kind of the Pirates.
- 34:39Speaker 1: That's what I said yesterday. And they have young Yeah,
- 34:42Speaker 1: this guy can hit their offense with garbage lash and
- 34:45Speaker 1: they need everything. I mean, Ben Jenson said, I need contact,
- 34:48Speaker 1: I need a little power, and this is everything in
- 34:50Speaker 1: a hitter. It's true, and it's in their price ring.
- 34:52Speaker 1: That's a good call, right, five hundred dish whatever that that.
- 34:55Speaker 6: They're getting hit on some of the younger pitchers, even
- 34:58Speaker 6: after the Oviato trade, and and they could possibly move
- 35:01Speaker 6: another to get the right back.
- 35:03Speaker 1: Two more teams that have trade situations going on. Cardinals,
- 35:08Speaker 1: What do you think about Brendan Donovan? I know you
- 35:10Speaker 1: wrote about Gorman, newtbar etc. Contreras Donovan.
- 35:15Speaker 6: I think goes It's very popular with a number of
- 35:18Speaker 6: teams because he can do anything right in field, outfield,
- 35:22Speaker 6: whatever you want him to be. They'll probably trade another
- 35:26Speaker 6: one of their left handed hitters too with the nuke
- 35:27Speaker 6: Bar Gorman. I don't think it will be Burlson and Wilson.
- 35:30Speaker 6: Contreras is an interesting guy. Two years, about forty one million,
- 35:34Speaker 6: with the buyout on the third year as a reasonable
- 35:38Speaker 6: price in a shortage or in a situation where there
- 35:40Speaker 6: is a shortage.
- 35:41Speaker 4: Of right handed hitters. So I could see that happening too.
- 35:44Speaker 6: And then there's Arnatto, and I would expect that they're
- 35:47Speaker 6: going to try really hard to find a spot for him.
- 35:49Speaker 4: Maybe after all this settles.
- 35:50Speaker 1: Okay, And then last one the Nationals have Mackenzie Gore
- 35:54Speaker 1: maybe c J. Abrams you wrote about what do you
- 35:56Speaker 1: think happens there? It's a new GM. I liked his
- 35:59Speaker 1: first move. I liked yeah like Ford.
- 36:01Speaker 6: Yes, it's interesting situation. Britcherali just wrote about this with
- 36:05Speaker 6: the Nationals. So if the Nationals come in and think,
- 36:10Speaker 6: you know what, we're bringing in new people, new pitching coach,
- 36:14Speaker 6: new analytics, maybe we can make McKenzie Gore better and
- 36:17Speaker 6: his value will be even higher at the deadline when
- 36:18Speaker 6: there's no free agent competition.
- 36:20Speaker 4: That's one way to look at it.
- 36:22Speaker 6: The risk in that is McKenzie Gore blows out or
- 36:25Speaker 6: gets injured in any way in the first half and
- 36:27Speaker 6: then his value plummets. So if I were the Nationals,
- 36:30Speaker 6: I'd probably do it now, and I probably wait for
- 36:34Speaker 6: maybe not even wait for the top free agents to sign.
- 36:37Speaker 6: Mackenzie Gore is a total stud and he would transform
- 36:41Speaker 6: a team. So if I'm the Nuts, I'm looking to
- 36:44Speaker 6: do it now. C j Abrams it's not as clear,
- 36:47Speaker 6: but they are drawing interest in him, and it's a
- 36:50Speaker 6: similar kind of thing. There aren't a lot of shortstops
- 36:54Speaker 6: out there. Bulbashet Is, some teams don't see him that way.
- 36:57Speaker 6: Hashan Kim of course. So if you can get seed
- 37:00Speaker 6: j Abrams three more years, that's pretty enticing.
- 37:04Speaker 1: Gors Jekyll and Hyde pitchers, So I would be careful. Yeah,
- 37:07Speaker 1: when he's good, he's a one ye, he's not good.
- 37:10Speaker 6: But he's this past season it got If I'm a team,
- 37:15Speaker 6: a contending team that has a strong pitching program, He's
- 37:18Speaker 6: exactly the kind of guy that teams think, given to us,
- 37:22Speaker 6: we'll fix.
- 37:22Speaker 1: It right And for the Nats though, if he has
- 37:24Speaker 1: a bad first staff, now, yeah, then you got a problem.
- 37:27Speaker 1: You got a problem?
- 37:27Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 37:28Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, Ken, good stuff.
- 37:30Speaker 2: I get two questions for him, all right, quick quick?
- 37:32Speaker 2: Hall of Fame yes or no?
- 37:33Speaker 4: I need to get back to work.
- 37:35Speaker 2: Hall of Fame yes or no? Should more than Jeff
- 37:37Speaker 2: Ken have got in on the committee?
- 37:39Speaker 6: My feeling is a j I would have been comfortable
- 37:42Speaker 6: with any of those eight, honestly, so I would have
- 37:45Speaker 6: been happy to see any of the eight getting now. Yeah,
- 37:47Speaker 6: I know as I say that the BBWA did not
- 37:50Speaker 6: elect these guys. I didn't vote for all of them,
- 37:52Speaker 6: but I would have been comfortable with any of them.
- 37:54Speaker 4: So Kent was a good choice, no question. I would have.
- 37:59Speaker 2: Yes, unbelievable office was great.
- 38:00Speaker 4: I saw what was the other question?
- 38:02Speaker 2: You're the bravest man in Orlando right now? You have
- 38:05Speaker 2: an iPhone with no case. What happens if you drop it?
- 38:08Speaker 1: It gets scratched and he moves on he lives. He
- 38:12Speaker 1: doesn't have to be one hundred percent to perform.
- 38:13Speaker 4: I'm not that brave and I'm not that I should
- 38:16Speaker 4: get a new case. There's one thing he learned.
- 38:19Speaker 2: He doesn't need load management.
- 38:21Speaker 4: Yeah, all right, that's that's it.
- 38:22Speaker 1: From Ken More on Fair Territory on Friday, special episode
- 38:26Speaker 1: for meetings. There it is. And have a family par
