- 0:16Speaker 1: Welcome to de exam presents you buy the public. So
- 0:18Speaker 1: I'm Kadannie sevens. Who are the Mark Duckner and John Oser.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Today is we're going to talk a little bit about
- 0:22Speaker 1: the draft, but also what's going on in the off
- 0:24Speaker 1: season program. Let's start out with our big things, and
- 0:27Speaker 1: big thing number one is old Faces. The Officason program
- 0:30Speaker 1: is a couple of weeks in at this point, but
- 0:32Speaker 1: it's the same coaching staff John, which it hasn't been.
- 0:36Speaker 1: There's been a lot of change here in the last
- 0:38Speaker 1: decade or so. But to have Liam Cohen and both
- 0:41Speaker 1: his coordinators back this year, they said that at least
- 0:44Speaker 1: when I talked to Liam yesterday, they were seeing some
- 0:46Speaker 1: more of what they were hoping to see at this point,
- 0:49Speaker 1: having had them in a system for the whole year.
- 0:51Speaker 1: When they came back into building, still on the same page.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I assumed old Faces was a shot at me
- 0:56Speaker 2: and duck Never never the old faces on here.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Look, I'll refer to Duff on this one more because
- 1:06Speaker 3: he's been inside and knows how coaching really affects these things.
- 1:11Speaker 2: I talked to Anthony Campan nearly last week.
- 1:13Speaker 3: I'm assuming Grant you would say the same thing having
- 1:17Speaker 3: your guys and having them know you. You just don't
- 1:21Speaker 3: have to start over. And if players are diligent, they
- 1:26Speaker 3: know that they should start over. They start over taking
- 1:28Speaker 3: the same notes, trying to learn the same stuff. But
- 1:33Speaker 3: when you've heard it al Eddie Duff, it's they're miles
- 1:37Speaker 3: ahead of where they were.
- 1:37Speaker 4: Last year, not even close, I mean.
- 1:39Speaker 5: And that's the great thing about it is that you know,
- 1:42Speaker 5: with the coaching staff starting off, Anthony had to kind
- 1:44Speaker 5: of teach the rest of the coaches last year what.
- 1:47Speaker 4: They were going to do schematically, how we're going to
- 1:49Speaker 4: do it.
- 1:49Speaker 5: Drills, practice, schedules, all kinds of things, preparation, game week.
- 1:53Speaker 4: All that now is in the rear view mirror.
- 1:55Speaker 5: So they're moving forward right now and further development of
- 1:59Speaker 5: teaching the play, their evaluation, can the scheme, all these things.
- 2:04Speaker 5: It's a much better time period front right now for
- 2:07Speaker 5: them to even get better.
- 2:08Speaker 3: And that's why you always hear about the second year
- 2:09Speaker 3: jump with you hear with players coming into the league,
- 2:14Speaker 3: but that second year with the coaching staff, particularly offensively
- 2:17Speaker 3: I mean I'm not taking from the defense, but particularly
- 2:21Speaker 3: offensively with Liam Cohen and Trevor Lawrence.
- 2:25Speaker 2: That's gonna get interesting.
- 2:26Speaker 5: Oh my gosh, I think it's it's tremendous. I mean again,
- 2:30Speaker 5: I think the job that they did together as the
- 2:32Speaker 5: season went on last year was outstanding. There's so much
- 2:35Speaker 5: further in along right now in terms of the depth
- 2:38Speaker 5: and the progress.
- 2:39Speaker 4: I think it's going to be a lot of fun.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Let's do a big thing number two, which is new phases,
- 2:44Speaker 1: and of course with rookie mini camp coming up, there's
- 2:47Speaker 1: gonna be some new additions, obviously returning staff and returning players.
- 2:50Speaker 1: But when you have rookies coming in DUFF, what are
- 2:53Speaker 1: you trying to get out of them that first couple
- 2:55Speaker 1: of days. Is it just getting them acclimated to NFL
- 2:57Speaker 1: level or do you learn some stuff about them the pield?
- 3:00Speaker 5: Well, I think what ky, you're studying them right now
- 3:03Speaker 5: in terms of how they interact with one another, how
- 3:06Speaker 5: well they learn, how disciplined are they in their day,
- 3:10Speaker 5: are they on time? Are they doing the right things
- 3:13Speaker 5: around the building, or how do they interact with other people,
- 3:15Speaker 5: their staff. All that's part of the evaluation process. And
- 3:18Speaker 5: you really don't know these kids until you've got them
- 3:21Speaker 5: for a while. And so it's an exciting time for
- 3:24Speaker 5: the coaches. It's exciting time for the rookies and their
- 3:28Speaker 5: first time in the NFL, first time in Jacksonville, so
- 3:31Speaker 5: a lot of you know, energy and excitement going on
- 3:36Speaker 5: as far as that group.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:37Speaker 3: I used to go to the strength guys about three
- 3:41Speaker 3: or four months in to a rookie class and say, hey,
- 3:46Speaker 3: which guys are one with the time, and which guys
- 3:49Speaker 3: are pros and which guys aren't. And the strength guys
- 3:52Speaker 3: can always.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Tell they're like the priests. You know, that's like going
- 3:56Speaker 4: to confessional.
- 3:56Speaker 5: They spend the most time with these guys, and they
- 3:59Speaker 5: can tell you who show up early, who's staying around,
- 4:01Speaker 5: who's doing the extra you know.
- 4:04Speaker 4: Equipment guys too.
- 4:05Speaker 5: I mean the equipment guys in the locker room, how
- 4:07Speaker 5: they're handling themselves in the locker room around their locker
- 4:11Speaker 5: very very key, you know pieces right now on terms
- 4:13Speaker 5: of how you you know, see these players.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Okay, I think this weekend some interesting guys to watch.
- 4:19Speaker 3: The Virginia running back Jamari Taylor, if I remember the
- 4:24Speaker 3: name right, and I apologize, we're not very interesting guy.
- 4:29Speaker 3: I think you'll also be looking to see can the
- 4:32Speaker 3: tight ends move, can Borcature and cozial Do they look
- 4:36Speaker 3: like NFL players. I've had a lot of people tell
- 4:38Speaker 3: me over the years, you don't really care that much
- 4:42Speaker 3: about certain things in camp, in the rookie camp, but
- 4:46Speaker 3: you want to make sure they look like they belong.
- 4:49Speaker 3: And the last thing you want is as a scouter
- 4:51Speaker 3: a coach to be walking off and shaking your head duff.
- 4:53Speaker 2: And say, I'm not sure this is for sure. And
- 4:57Speaker 2: that's that happens every now and then.
- 4:58Speaker 4: Well it sure does, no, absolutely doesn't you know?
- 5:01Speaker 5: You always I always talk to the players and preliminary
- 5:05Speaker 5: time period coming to camp. Look, come at your best
- 5:08Speaker 5: athletic self, your quickest, don't worry about your weight or
- 5:11Speaker 5: anything like that, show your best movement skills. First impressions
- 5:15Speaker 5: are critical, you know, and you don't get a second
- 5:17Speaker 5: chance to make one. So that's I'm sure the coaching
- 5:20Speaker 5: staff will be looking at all the athleticism of these
- 5:22Speaker 5: guys and see how they're going to fit in.
- 5:24Speaker 1: You can sometimes it'll be hard to tell between good
- 5:26Speaker 1: and great, but if it's bad, the unfortunately that kind
- 5:29Speaker 1: of pops out right from the get go, so hopefully
- 5:32Speaker 1: we can avoid some of that. Our final big thing
- 5:34Speaker 1: today is going to be face facts, John, they had
- 5:36Speaker 1: a great year last year, I think maybe better than
- 5:38Speaker 1: we expected for sure, thirteen and four. But now it's
- 5:41Speaker 1: the time when you turn the page. They talked to
- 5:43Speaker 1: m Cohen yesterday at an event and he was really
- 5:45Speaker 1: clear about they're not defending anything. They're not defending the division.
- 5:48Speaker 1: This is all about attacking. They have achieved nothing in
- 5:51Speaker 1: his eyes, and I feel like that mentality has really
- 5:54Speaker 1: gotten into the group and they understand that. Yeah.
- 5:57Speaker 3: I think that's the key, is the that's the message,
- 6:01Speaker 3: that's clearly what you want. And from my few conversations
- 6:06Speaker 3: with William Cohen in the off season, he's really focused
- 6:09Speaker 3: on making that real. That's hard to get into the
- 6:12Speaker 3: water because all the players who are here felt it.
- 6:15Speaker 3: They know it's the second year, but Duff, you and
- 6:18Speaker 3: I talked a second ago. The experience of a second
- 6:22Speaker 3: year helps. But I think Liam really wants to make
- 6:26Speaker 3: sure that the energy from last year, that urgency of
- 6:30Speaker 3: new goes into this year. And I think that's the art,
- 6:35Speaker 3: that's what coaching is. I think he'll do great at it,
- 6:38Speaker 3: cause he's good at that sort of thing. But having
- 6:40Speaker 3: that at the forefront of hey last year is last year,
- 6:43Speaker 3: we haven't accomplished anything. That's a hard thing to keep
- 6:47Speaker 3: in the player's.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Mind, no doubt about it.
- 6:49Speaker 5: But he is very good at I've been very impressed
- 6:52Speaker 5: in his presentation, the way he's developed the personality of
- 6:55Speaker 5: this team and his coaching staff. Again, communication has been
- 6:59Speaker 5: excellent here. You see it between the personnel staff and
- 7:02Speaker 5: the coaching staff. Amongst the coaching staff, I think they're
- 7:05Speaker 5: all on the same page in terms of the direction
- 7:07Speaker 5: and the message that's going forth.
- 7:09Speaker 4: And I've been very very impressed with that.
- 7:11Speaker 5: They've had a taste of something that was very special
- 7:14Speaker 5: last year and they fell short. And I think there's
- 7:17Speaker 5: not only last year was last year, but there's some
- 7:19Speaker 5: unfinished business. There's more that I think this group, coaching staff,
- 7:23Speaker 5: everybody collectively wants to accomplish. Fields that they can accomplish,
- 7:27Speaker 5: felt that they were a little short on and they're
- 7:29Speaker 5: anxious to get going to make that reality.
- 7:33Speaker 1: All right, Stay with us here on jag Zam. Coming up,
- 7:34Speaker 1: we're going to talk about some of the stuff that's
- 7:36Speaker 1: going on elsewhere around the NFL. Welcome back into Jagsam today.
- 7:43Speaker 1: We got brought to you by publics. Of course, Mark
- 7:46Speaker 1: Duffner John Osier with me, let's talk a little bit
- 7:48Speaker 1: of the NFL. We've been doing a lot of Jags stuff,
- 7:50Speaker 1: so try to keep track of what's going on elsewhere
- 7:52Speaker 1: around the league. And do you want to talk about
- 7:54Speaker 1: the Texans getting two extensions done or new contracts at
- 7:58Speaker 1: least as he's el Shier and Anderson Junior are both
- 8:01Speaker 1: resigning with the Texans. That defense is very scary, duff
- 8:04Speaker 1: and it's gonna remain that way.
- 8:06Speaker 5: It looks like, yeah, good moves by them, not too
- 8:08Speaker 5: good for rush, but you talk about a dominant defense,
- 8:11Speaker 5: one that can really run.
- 8:12Speaker 4: That they got players at every level, and good productive
- 8:16Speaker 4: players at every level.
- 8:17Speaker 5: Wasn't anxious to see that news, but again positive for them.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Yeah, Anderson's as good as any defensive player in the
- 8:24Speaker 3: league right now, maybe outside Miles Garrett, but I'm not
- 8:26Speaker 3: even sure it's outside Miles Garrett.
- 8:28Speaker 2: He's the to me, he's the force of that defense.
- 8:32Speaker 3: And that was a franchise defining contract. The other guy
- 8:38Speaker 3: who prefer not to mention, he's good and it was
- 8:43Speaker 3: important for them to have him back in the fold.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Not as much of a core move as much as
- 8:49Speaker 3: just sort of keeping that defense together.
- 8:51Speaker 2: For a year or two. Always interesting.
- 8:53Speaker 3: With a team like the Texans, it's hard to maintain
- 9:00Speaker 3: great and they're a great team right now, but it's
- 9:02Speaker 3: hard to maintain a great defense for more than about
- 9:04Speaker 3: a three or four year window because you've got so
- 9:07Speaker 3: many moving parts. Easier to build around a quarterback than
- 9:11Speaker 3: five defensive core players. Uh so that's what you're watching
- 9:14Speaker 3: forth Houston right now. Yes, they're at a level. I'm
- 9:18Speaker 3: assuming they're gonna be at a level this year. How
- 9:20Speaker 3: long can they maintain that level trying to keep a
- 9:22Speaker 3: core defense together. Uh, this is the first swing at
- 9:25Speaker 3: that and uh, for our sake, let's hope not very long.
- 9:29Speaker 3: But uh, I'm not count on that cause that's a
- 9:31Speaker 3: good franchise.
- 9:31Speaker 1: It's interesting to see. Obviously they put a ton of
- 9:33Speaker 1: resources into that defense. What I think is the best
- 9:35Speaker 1: defense in the league, and I'm sure many agree, But
- 9:38Speaker 1: how are they gonna be able to get the offense
- 9:40Speaker 1: on board? We saw in the playoffs last year. They
- 9:42Speaker 1: need to get their offense up to that level as well.
- 9:44Speaker 1: But uh, it feels like when they put so many
- 9:47Speaker 1: resources into the defense, sometimes the offense doesn't get the
- 9:49Speaker 1: attention it needs.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Yeah, it's tough because that's the choice you make. They
- 9:55Speaker 3: drafted Stroud and Anderson's same draft. Uh, and at that
- 10:00Speaker 3: point you sort of start the clock. And then they've
- 10:03Speaker 3: been smart. Hey, the defense with Djamiico Ryans is a
- 10:06Speaker 3: strength we can build that. They had hoped that Stroud
- 10:10Speaker 3: would develop franchise quarterback when he doesn't, which he hasn't yet,
- 10:16Speaker 3: you sort of lean more toward defense, and the circumstances
- 10:20Speaker 3: of your draft. How they developed us sort of takes
- 10:22Speaker 3: your franchise in that direction.
- 10:24Speaker 4: No question about that.
- 10:25Speaker 5: And as you just said, they're relying on that defense
- 10:28Speaker 5: trying to maintain field position, get the ball back, keep
- 10:32Speaker 5: the points low, give the best situation they can for
- 10:36Speaker 5: their offense, which is still developing as you just mentioned
- 10:38Speaker 5: right now, that's gonna be a key for them to
- 10:41Speaker 5: really get some continuity in that group because, as you
- 10:43Speaker 5: just said, k that defense has got it across the board.
- 10:46Speaker 4: So you know, that's what I think they're folks.
- 10:48Speaker 5: Now on right now, how can we get take another
- 10:51Speaker 5: step of productive progress in terms of their offense.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Let's look elsewhere. News report coming out this that former
- 11:01Speaker 1: Jaguars GM Trent Bulky is now going to be an
- 11:03Speaker 1: advisor with the Cleveland Browns. It feels like the Jaguars
- 11:06Speaker 1: and Browns are always tied into conversation, at least the
- 11:08Speaker 1: last couple of years. But what are they doing exactly
- 11:12Speaker 1: in Cleveland? Obviously we know Bulky's been around for a while,
- 11:15Speaker 1: but kind of heading up there to advise.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Well, many gms have people in the league they know,
- 11:23Speaker 3: and you know, Trent, I don't think was ready to retire.
- 11:28Speaker 3: I'm assuming this is an advisory role in the sense
- 11:31Speaker 3: of most teams gms have people that they lean on
- 11:37Speaker 3: just to bounce ideas off of. So, look, this is
- 11:41Speaker 3: what Trent wants. I'm happy for him. I don't think
- 11:43Speaker 3: he wanted to be out of the league. He picked
- 11:45Speaker 3: a lot of good players around here and helped get
- 11:48Speaker 3: this team from a certain place to a better place.
- 11:51Speaker 2: So here's wishing them well. I hope that goes well
- 11:54Speaker 2: for him.
- 11:54Speaker 5: Yeah, I would say Cleveland's not only doing that in
- 11:56Speaker 5: the personality. They brought Dom Capers Carolina, a former defensive
- 12:01Speaker 5: coordinator here. I believe under coach Coughlin again a very bright,
- 12:06Speaker 5: successful two time head football coach. He's on their staff
- 12:09Speaker 5: as a senior analyst. If you will or advisor, and
- 12:12Speaker 5: he'll help them. He'll help their new defensive coordinator, Mike Rutenberg,
- 12:17Speaker 5: He'll help the head football coach, Todd Monkin. And so
- 12:20Speaker 5: it's a good move by their franchise to bring in
- 12:22Speaker 5: guys that have experience, that have wisdom. If you will
- 12:26Speaker 5: have ideas and help this new staff which has got
- 12:29Speaker 5: a lot of people on it, you put forth a
- 12:32Speaker 5: team this year.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Is that a common occurrence when you have like a
- 12:34Speaker 1: new staff or maybe a first time head coach, to
- 12:36Speaker 1: bring in some extra advisement to like help at least
- 12:39Speaker 1: have not group think, but some different points of view
- 12:42Speaker 1: when you're trying to redo this.
- 12:44Speaker 4: I think it's a smart idea.
- 12:45Speaker 5: I think you take advantage of guys that have been
- 12:48Speaker 5: down the road a few times and can keep this
- 12:51Speaker 5: keep this franchise on the road, not falling off the
- 12:55Speaker 5: road or off the side somewhere. So I think it's
- 12:57Speaker 5: a smart move to take advantage of guys that have
- 13:00Speaker 5: in there done that a little bit and are not
- 13:02Speaker 5: so caught up in being the leader, so to speak,
- 13:04Speaker 5: but here to help you as you navigate through the season.
- 13:07Speaker 3: I have nothing else that puts it in real life
- 13:09Speaker 3: meaning you're a first time head coach and you're thinking
- 13:13Speaker 3: about something, and I guess want to be able to
- 13:15Speaker 3: look at somebody saying, hey, am I screwing this up
- 13:19Speaker 3: for you? Okay, fine, and then you move on with
- 13:21Speaker 3: confidence so that you know, most young head coaches, if
- 13:26Speaker 3: you didn't have it on staff, you're calling one of
- 13:28Speaker 3: your guys somewhere. May as well have it on staff.
- 13:33Speaker 2: All right.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Our final thing we're going to talk about today is
- 13:35Speaker 1: reports the schedule release. Normally we have it around around now.
- 13:39Speaker 1: I think years ago, used to come out even before
- 13:41Speaker 1: the draft, but it's been pushed back to late May,
- 13:43Speaker 1: so we're not going to know who or when they're playing.
- 13:46Speaker 1: We know who they're playing, but not when we do know.
- 13:48Speaker 1: For us, particularly John, two London games this year, but
- 13:52Speaker 1: not much else. Yeah, and John goes wherever they stay
- 13:56Speaker 1: on the schedule, so he doesn't care as much. But
- 13:58Speaker 1: I enjoy the schedule release. I think they're fun and
- 14:01Speaker 1: they're different.
- 14:02Speaker 2: To play a hotel and I usually stay at it.
- 14:05Speaker 3: So yeah, it'll be late a couple of weeks and
- 14:09Speaker 3: it'll have the same fanfare and people will overplay the
- 14:14Speaker 3: strength of schedule thing, and I'll answer questions about it.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Duff, How much does the schedule actually matter to coaching?
- 14:20Speaker 1: I mean, I'm sure you look at it to some
- 14:21Speaker 1: degree of hey we got to go to Denver in
- 14:24Speaker 1: January or something like that, But does it affect kind
- 14:27Speaker 1: of how coaching works.
- 14:29Speaker 4: It does a little bit.
- 14:29Speaker 5: And I always was anxious, like you to get it
- 14:32Speaker 5: as early as possible because then you start to do
- 14:34Speaker 5: a lot of your preparation early preparation on the opponents,
- 14:38Speaker 5: whether it be the conference ones or whoever new opponents.
- 14:42Speaker 5: You're trying to get as much work done as you
- 14:45Speaker 5: can in the off season, if you will, in preparation
- 14:49Speaker 5: for the season. So how that schedule puts is put
- 14:52Speaker 5: together chronologically affects the work you're going to do in
- 14:56Speaker 5: preparation for the season coming up. So it's good to
- 14:58Speaker 5: get it.
- 15:00Speaker 3: And it's odd that they're moving it back. I've never
- 15:01Speaker 3: really heard of moving back before. Maybe more international games,
- 15:05Speaker 3: maybe still trying to sell some sponsorship on it.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Who know about that?
- 15:10Speaker 3: And let's not forget that even though every fan base
- 15:16Speaker 3: is going to criticize the schedule they get and think
- 15:18Speaker 3: that the league is out to get them, and a
- 15:20Speaker 3: lot of people within obviously are a.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Lot of people within teams. I've worked for teams where
- 15:25Speaker 2: teams thought.
- 15:26Speaker 3: That they were out to get them, but it's a
- 15:30Speaker 3: it's a hard thing to fit thirty two teams into
- 15:33Speaker 3: seventeen parameters. So it may just be that they're trying
- 15:37Speaker 3: to work out the final two or three games somewhere.
- 15:40Speaker 1: All right, Well, when we get a release, they will
- 15:42Speaker 1: let you guys all know about that, and of course
- 15:44Speaker 1: the release videos coming up. After the break, we're going
- 15:46Speaker 1: to do ozone mail Bag questions and answer some fan questions.
- 15:53Speaker 1: And now for ozone mail Bag, all the fans eating
- 16:01Speaker 1: your wisdom, John, they want to know what's going on.
- 16:03Speaker 1: I'm going to start out with John from Fleming Island,
- 16:05Speaker 1: who says, judging a general manager by grading rookies who
- 16:08Speaker 1: haven't taken an NFL snap seems flawed. But what does
- 16:12Speaker 1: your take on the twenty twenty five draft class.
- 16:15Speaker 2: It's still TBD, but.
- 16:19Speaker 3: I'm of the belief that any draft class is still
- 16:23Speaker 3: TBD going into its second season. Yeah, I think we'll
- 16:27Speaker 3: start to get to know a lot more about these
- 16:29Speaker 3: guys in September, and then I think what you're seeing,
- 16:34Speaker 3: I'm not saying what they do as rookies isn't real,
- 16:38Speaker 3: but there's so much development that goes on. It's so
- 16:40Speaker 3: much fit. I think Tooting looks like he's going to
- 16:43Speaker 3: be a strong contributor. Travis Hunter, if he can be healthy, superstar.
- 16:49Speaker 3: To me, the two players on which this draft will
- 16:53Speaker 3: turn in the long term are Mileon and Ransall, because
- 16:57Speaker 3: I think Mylon is going to be a starter at
- 17:00Speaker 3: guard and I think Grantest he may start at safety.
- 17:05Speaker 2: If those two guys.
- 17:06Speaker 3: You know, are good players who elevate or maintain, then
- 17:10Speaker 3: it's a good class.
- 17:12Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 17:12Speaker 5: I mean, that's why I think those are all to
- 17:14Speaker 5: be announced as you just said, but I'm green with you,
- 17:17Speaker 5: and guys are gonna be the prime movers in that group,
- 17:19Speaker 5: and that's what they're gonna get a glimpse.
- 17:21Speaker 4: Of this weekend.
- 17:22Speaker 5: It's just rookie minute camp starts, but it'll be through
- 17:26Speaker 5: the course of the season and probably even the next season.
- 17:29Speaker 5: As you're already talking about, you know, des how good
- 17:32Speaker 5: this class is.
- 17:33Speaker 1: It feels like you're almost getting a little bit of
- 17:35Speaker 1: an addition to this year's class. And we talk about Ranstall,
- 17:37Speaker 1: who didn't play it all. Jayala McLeod wasn't couldn't play
- 17:39Speaker 1: at all, and Mylin was severely limited because he had
- 17:41Speaker 1: that knee injury in training camp, so we didn't see
- 17:43Speaker 1: a ton of him either. But those feel like almost
- 17:45Speaker 1: additions because that's your second third round pick. He didn't
- 17:46Speaker 1: see a ton of it.
- 17:47Speaker 3: Yeah, and even though the fans didn't see it, it's
- 17:51Speaker 3: hard because when fans don't see a player on the field, they.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Assume that something is wrong. His rookies.
- 18:00Speaker 3: All I can tell you is I they love Milem,
- 18:03Speaker 3: they love Ransaw. And if if Hunter and Ransaw are
- 18:07Speaker 3: what they believe they are, uh, that's two y In
- 18:12Speaker 3: this day and age, it's not half your secondary anymore.
- 18:14Speaker 3: It's probably thirty three percent of your secondary. If those
- 18:18Speaker 3: guys are what they believe they are. Mm Uh, that
- 18:21Speaker 3: turns a good secondary into a deep, really.
- 18:24Speaker 4: Good one, no question.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Let's go to Adam from Allen Town's who says, are
- 18:30Speaker 1: we devaluing the wide receiver position? Seems like some of
- 18:32Speaker 1: our best receiving weapons are gonna be riding the bench
- 18:35Speaker 1: if we're in twelve and eleven personnel.
- 18:37Speaker 3: Well, m all that duff uh takes sort of the
- 18:40Speaker 3: x's and o's of this, but uh to me. That's
- 18:44Speaker 3: been a little bit of a trend. Question is he, hey,
- 18:47Speaker 3: we're going tight ends, what about our receivers? And my
- 18:50Speaker 3: stock answer is, you know, you're allowed to play more
- 18:53Speaker 3: than one personnel package in the NFL.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Uh.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Also it opens things up, Well, the receivers have a
- 19:00Speaker 3: few less opportunities if they go twelve and thirteen. Yeah,
- 19:04Speaker 3: but on the players they're on the field, they're going
- 19:06Speaker 3: to matter a lot. And I think that's how you
- 19:08Speaker 3: have to look at it. It's a package sub package league,
- 19:13Speaker 3: and all they're trying to do is get better in
- 19:15Speaker 3: the twelve and thirteen person Now, they're still going to
- 19:17Speaker 3: play the wide receivers.
- 19:18Speaker 4: No question about it.
- 19:18Speaker 5: And what they've just done with the addition of the
- 19:21Speaker 5: tight ends now they've just expanded the attack word that
- 19:25Speaker 5: they've been using here. They're attack offensively to the opponent.
- 19:28Speaker 5: Each week, It'll depend how much thirteen personnel twelve personnel
- 19:31Speaker 5: they utilize based on what the defense presents across the
- 19:35Speaker 5: ball for them. So eleven personnel I still believe will
- 19:39Speaker 5: be the lead and lady if you will, in terms
- 19:40Speaker 5: of the personnel group. But now with the addition of
- 19:43Speaker 5: the thirteen personnel in particular. A lot of teams in
- 19:45Speaker 5: this league do not know how to offend it, I
- 19:48Speaker 5: mean defend it.
- 19:49Speaker 4: The fact that.
- 19:50Speaker 5: Formation is a big part of that defense. You get misalignments,
- 19:54Speaker 5: or that offense you get misalignments. It's great in the
- 19:58Speaker 5: end of the game to control the ball. We just
- 20:00Speaker 5: made our team better and more difficult to defense with
- 20:04Speaker 5: the addition of the players that tight ends the thirteen personnel.
- 20:07Speaker 2: You've probably talked about another show's duff, but.
- 20:11Speaker 3: You were really good when you wrote about it for
- 20:13Speaker 3: our final analysis piece X's and O's. As a defensive coach,
- 20:20Speaker 3: What makes that scheme so hard to defend?
- 20:23Speaker 4: Well, just what I said.
- 20:24Speaker 5: I mean, first of all, a lot of teams are
- 20:26Speaker 5: built right now to defend eleven personnel. Okay, so they
- 20:29Speaker 5: don't have the big guys all right, So that's you're
- 20:32Speaker 5: able to now knock them off the ball because they've
- 20:34Speaker 5: got more of a eleven personnel three receiver, one wrunning back,
- 20:39Speaker 5: one tight end type of defense out there. So that's
- 20:42Speaker 5: you already win the line.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Of lighter guys, lighter guys even light linebackers, right correct you.
- 20:48Speaker 5: So now you now you can get physical, you can
- 20:51Speaker 5: bully them as far as that's concerned, But then the
- 20:53Speaker 5: fact that it's always a checklist items a defensive coach.
- 20:56Speaker 5: Do they have thirteen? What are they doing out of
- 20:58Speaker 5: do they have unbalanced line? Do they have tempo? Do
- 21:01Speaker 5: they have motion? What kind of plays are their mindy?
- 21:03Speaker 5: Can they open the formation up? Go to an empty formation?
- 21:06Speaker 5: You send your big guys in the game against thirteen,
- 21:09Speaker 5: and all of a sudden, now they open it up
- 21:11Speaker 5: or they go to an empty formation? Are they getting
- 21:12Speaker 5: a four wide look? And you've got big guys that
- 21:15Speaker 5: you know they're not prepared to defend the defense or
- 21:17Speaker 5: the offensive formation. So you get such a good check
- 21:20Speaker 5: with me personnel wise, schematically wise to attack a defense
- 21:25Speaker 5: with I think it's a brilliant move and it just
- 21:27Speaker 5: gets more bullets in the belt if you will, for
- 21:30Speaker 5: our offensive staff and the way Liam Cohen wants to
- 21:33Speaker 5: get more, you know, continue to be more physical, continue
- 21:35Speaker 5: to help the running game. I think it's a brilliant move.
- 21:38Speaker 5: It's putting a lot of stress. They want to make
- 21:40Speaker 5: the opponent's press box nervous and they are doing it in.
- 21:42Speaker 4: A big way.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Plus, Kay, can you imagine you know Liam probably better
- 21:46Speaker 3: than I do. Early this offseason. You know what a
- 21:54Speaker 3: like football obsessed, offense obsessed guy he is if he's
- 22:01Speaker 3: looking at something that he can do but doesn't quite
- 22:05Speaker 3: have the guys to do it and can't quite get
- 22:08Speaker 3: to that look because you know, I want to do
- 22:11Speaker 3: these tight ends, but you know, I really need one
- 22:14Speaker 3: more guy.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Can you imagine how much they would drive.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Him nuts not to think that was why he was
- 22:18Speaker 1: having the dreams and the visions. He's like, I need
- 22:21Speaker 1: workishire because I need to be able to have these
- 22:23Speaker 1: options on it.
- 22:24Speaker 3: So I think it's gonna be like you saw last year,
- 22:27Speaker 3: how uber creative and how good he was in the
- 22:32Speaker 3: moment with what probably in your first year as a coach,
- 22:37Speaker 3: you don't have all of the bullets and again, you know,
- 22:41Speaker 3: so to speak, now, with one more offensive package that
- 22:44Speaker 3: you can heavily lean on, it's gonna be fun, be
- 22:48Speaker 3: fun to watch.
- 22:48Speaker 5: And that's what we're talking about right now. In the
- 22:50Speaker 5: second year. He's moving down the road right now. He
- 22:53Speaker 5: knows the strengths of the current team that he's got,
- 22:55Speaker 5: he knows the pieces that he needs to continue to
- 22:59Speaker 5: go right now.
- 23:00Speaker 4: That's why it's exciting.
- 23:01Speaker 5: I love the focus in the direction that I that
- 23:03Speaker 5: I think he's planning and mapping out for this team.
- 23:07Speaker 1: All right, So our final one Jeff from Wake Forest,
- 23:09Speaker 1: North Carolina. Do you see any upcoming big post draft
- 23:12Speaker 1: signings to fill holes or do you think there are
- 23:15Speaker 1: no holes now? Also, how is Caleb bran Saw? Does
- 23:18Speaker 1: he project as a starter this year?
- 23:20Speaker 3: Well, it was the first one first, and he has
- 23:23Speaker 3: a good chance to start. I think he'll be competing
- 23:26Speaker 3: for that job in OTAs and in training camp where
- 23:30Speaker 3: it really matters.
- 23:31Speaker 2: So does he project as a starter? Who knows?
- 23:36Speaker 3: You know, he's never played a NFL snap yet, so
- 23:38Speaker 3: it's hard to anoint him.
- 23:40Speaker 1: They also rotated on defense with.
- 23:41Speaker 3: Yeah, but he'll be I'd be shocked if he's not
- 23:45Speaker 3: one of the three safeties when they're in three safety
- 23:49Speaker 3: looks and really mattering a lot in terms of holes
- 23:54Speaker 3: on the roster, I don't think that they're in his Sometimes,
- 23:58Speaker 3: coming out of the draft, teams couldn't get to something
- 24:01Speaker 3: that they wanted to address, and then you might see
- 24:04Speaker 3: them go on to the what is it the second
- 24:07Speaker 3: or third wave free agency? That's always an option. I
- 24:10Speaker 3: don't get a vibe that they're you know, I don't
- 24:16Speaker 3: think there's a panicky shopping list right now. I think
- 24:18Speaker 3: they're fine with what they've got. I think they feel
- 24:20Speaker 3: good what what they've got. If you get into camp
- 24:23Speaker 3: and realize, hey, we're oh yeah this, you know, was
- 24:27Speaker 3: what happened last year to a couple spots, and they
- 24:28Speaker 3: went out and addressed them with some trades. I don't
- 24:31Speaker 3: think they I don't think they think that's going to
- 24:34Speaker 3: be the case, but they'll certainly be nimbling over their
- 24:36Speaker 3: feet in you know, watching for it.
- 24:39Speaker 4: Oh.
- 24:40Speaker 5: I think that's what pressed me last year, is watching
- 24:42Speaker 5: how they continually monitor the progress of the team and
- 24:46Speaker 5: the strengths of the players, and are constantly vigil in
- 24:49Speaker 5: terms of player acquisition. So I love what again, what
- 24:53Speaker 5: they're doing as far as that's concerned. That's why I
- 24:54Speaker 5: was so anxious as an outsider, what are they doing?
- 24:57Speaker 5: Because don't godet's working.
- 24:58Speaker 2: You know, you're the ultimate inside Huh you're an insider.
- 25:01Speaker 4: There was no, no, no, no, I'm not.
- 25:04Speaker 5: But I'm just saying, very very impressed. And so yeah,
- 25:07Speaker 5: they will be monitoring the wires as far as that's concerned.
- 25:10Speaker 5: And there's some good players out there still.
- 25:12Speaker 4: But I'm with you. I think they felt. You can
- 25:14Speaker 4: just watch what they.
- 25:15Speaker 5: Did in the off season in terms of signing players
- 25:19Speaker 5: back and what all the moves that went on. They're
- 25:21Speaker 5: pretty confident in the group that they've got right now,
- 25:24Speaker 5: having them in the system again, developing them for their
- 25:27Speaker 5: coaching staff did a good job.
- 25:28Speaker 4: Coaching does matter. They proved that here.
- 25:31Speaker 5: Uh, and then with the direction that they did in
- 25:33Speaker 5: the draft again, I think that there.
- 25:36Speaker 4: I like the plan.
- 25:37Speaker 5: I like the movement and progress that they're making as
- 25:40Speaker 5: far as that's concerned.
- 25:41Speaker 4: So I feel good about it.
- 25:43Speaker 2: And they'll look.
- 25:44Speaker 3: I mean, we talked all last season on these shows
- 25:48Speaker 3: about how they I use the term built the receiver
- 25:51Speaker 3: core on the fly. They thought the receiving corps was
- 25:54Speaker 3: one thing this time, and they thought Danny Ground was
- 25:58Speaker 3: going to be it. They thought, you know, correct, b
- 26:01Speaker 3: Tod was going to be the alpha one. And think
- 26:03Speaker 3: about how it looked by the end of the season.
- 26:07Speaker 3: Not necessary. I mean, it was better, significantly different. So
- 26:11Speaker 3: that's what they will do at all positions, is keep
- 26:14Speaker 3: an eye on it. Gladstone's very fond of saying, you know, buillion,
- 26:19Speaker 3: the roster's three sixty five.
- 26:21Speaker 2: It's not one specific period and.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Were not afraid to do it in season as we saw.
- 26:25Speaker 3: Yes, it was thought that was out of all the
- 26:28Speaker 3: things happened last year that was subtly the most impressive
- 26:31Speaker 3: to me. It was the fact that they could redo
- 26:33Speaker 3: the wide receiver corps from August to December.
- 26:36Speaker 4: Without a doubt.
- 26:37Speaker 5: We were shitting in training chemical who you know early
- 26:41Speaker 5: on drop pauls up, whatever the case may be, and
- 26:44Speaker 5: how that group continued to get better and better and
- 26:45Speaker 5: then put Parker Washington. I mean, all the play that
- 26:48Speaker 5: this team had, Are you kidding me? I mean that's
- 26:51Speaker 5: why that's why people are not going, what do you mean.
- 26:54Speaker 4: A year ago?
- 26:54Speaker 5: Then we're talking about if we had tight ends or
- 26:56Speaker 5: not because the emergence of that receiving court just what
- 26:59Speaker 5: you talked about, John, So now I say said, I
- 27:02Speaker 5: think that the balance that they're going to give and
- 27:05Speaker 5: again to utilize the attack that I think he's got
- 27:07Speaker 5: in mind.
- 27:07Speaker 4: Is going to be great.
- 27:09Speaker 1: All right, stay with us. We're going to take one
- 27:10Speaker 1: more break and then we'll tell you what the schedule

- 27:42Speaker 2: Is a pleasure.
- 27:45Speaker 1: So drafted behind us. Now the rookies are finally coming
- 27:47Speaker 1: into town. They're going to be doing rookie mini camp Friday,
- 27:50Speaker 1: Saturday and Sunday. We'll get to talk to, I believe
- 27:53Speaker 1: some of the players and the coaches on Saturday to
- 27:56Speaker 1: kind of see how the first couple of days have gone.
- 27:59Speaker 1: But stuff, when you have the rookies in here. We
- 28:01Speaker 1: talked a little bit about this earlier. Was there any
- 28:03Speaker 1: player that you got in there that you were like
- 28:05Speaker 1: surprised or just kind of in awe in a good
- 28:07Speaker 1: way when they when he first saw him on the field.
- 28:10Speaker 5: Yeah, go back to when I was at Cincinnati, Tequilo Spikes,
- 28:13Speaker 5: who was a very good linebacker from Auburn.
- 28:17Speaker 4: I'll just share this with you.
- 28:18Speaker 5: When he first came out onto the field and I'd
- 28:20Speaker 5: been to his Pro Day and workouts. But I looked
- 28:22Speaker 5: down in his shoes and he had these big, big
- 28:25Speaker 5: shoes and he was a former teammate of Willie Anderson
- 28:28Speaker 5: had tackle that we had. And I thought you shouldn't
- 28:30Speaker 5: be wearing Willy Anderson's shoes because he was so big.
- 28:33Speaker 4: He had fifteen inch those were his feet.
- 28:35Speaker 5: I didn't realize that his feet were fifteens, you know,
- 28:38Speaker 5: for a six one two and thirty pound linebacker, but
- 28:41Speaker 5: who could run like a deer.
- 28:43Speaker 4: But he had huge shoe shoes on.
- 28:46Speaker 5: I thought he was you know, he forgot his or
- 28:48Speaker 5: something he borrowed him from Willie. I mean, that was
- 28:50Speaker 5: something that happened. I couldn't believe it. But anyway, Yeah.
- 28:53Speaker 2: So that was actual for a long time.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 28:56Speaker 5: Yeah, No, it's and that's the key thing which you
- 28:59Speaker 5: just said, Kaiser. These guys, all these rookies drafts are
- 29:02Speaker 5: not undrafted. They're going to be, you know, trying to
- 29:05Speaker 5: put their best foot forward, at least they should be.
- 29:07Speaker 5: And and the key component is that we, as I said,
- 29:10Speaker 5: we always used to coach them. You don't get a
- 29:11Speaker 5: second chance to make a good first impression. So come in,
- 29:14Speaker 5: be sharp, listen, take good notes, all those kind of things.
- 29:18Speaker 4: That's what you're looking for.
- 29:19Speaker 5: And guys that impress you early on, as they said
- 29:23Speaker 5: he was. He was one that impressed me immediately with
- 29:25Speaker 5: his movement, with his study, all those type of things.
- 29:28Speaker 5: There's been numerous rookies that I've been fortunate enough to
- 29:31Speaker 5: be impressed by John.
- 29:32Speaker 1: For us our perspective, it's like, just don't look real bad.
- 29:35Speaker 1: We can tell when it's not.
- 29:36Speaker 3: Good well, and just stay healthy and oh absolutely this anymore.
- 29:43Speaker 3: These are wisely controlled environments where there's a keen awareness
- 29:49Speaker 3: now of that they're not in football shape. They're not
- 29:52Speaker 3: supposed to be in football shape. They've been in combine shape,
- 29:56Speaker 3: and teams have really been over backwards to make sure
- 29:59Speaker 3: let on ramp these guys in the proper way.
- 30:03Speaker 2: You're not winning a ring out here on Saturday.
- 30:05Speaker 4: Great point, very good point.
- 30:07Speaker 1: Keeping it low key. Well, we'll be out there on Saturday.
- 30:09Speaker 1: We're gonna get you some as much information as weekend,
- 30:13Speaker 1: get to see some of these new players out there,
- 30:14Speaker 1: and we'll be back here next week on jag Dam
- 30:16Speaker 1: to talk about it. Have a good one
